- 0:00Speaker 1: And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor-bearer,
- 0:04Speaker 1: and said, Come up to us, and we will show
- 0:07Speaker 1: you a thing. And Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, Come
- 0:11Speaker 1: up after me, for the Lord hath delivered them into
- 0:15Speaker 1: the hand of Israel. 1 Samuel 14.12 Dear Lord, Today
- 0:22Speaker 1: I ask that you give me the courage of Jonathan,
- 0:25Speaker 1: who was able to see victory in a seemingly impossible situation,
- 0:31Speaker 1: When the odds seem stacked against me, I choose to
- 0:34Speaker 1: see myself overcoming all challenges that are before me. Whether
- 0:39Speaker 1: two or two thousand, I will move with precision and
- 0:44Speaker 1: execute my plan of attack, knowing that your hand of
- 0:47Speaker 1: favor is upon me and all those who are fighting
- 0:51Speaker 1: alongside me to claim the territory and promises you've laid
- 0:56Speaker 1: before us. The day of vindication and validation is upon me.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Thank you, God, that through you and your power, no
- 1:08Speaker 1: weapon formed against me will prosper. When prideful people in
- 1:13Speaker 1: positions of influence try to abuse their power and try
- 1:16Speaker 1: to strike down my ideas and purpose, I declare that
- 1:20Speaker 1: you will surround me with men and women of influence
- 1:24Speaker 1: who will protect my post, as the soldiers did for Jonathan.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I announce today that I am your person. I am
- 1:34Speaker 1: the one you've chosen to step into new camps and
- 1:37Speaker 1: doors of opportunities. I am victorious. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with us today. Continue your time
- 1:51Speaker 1: with God by listening to today's Bible story, brought to
- 1:55Speaker 1: you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Jonathan's Victory In our last story, we learned of Saul's
- 2:13Speaker 2: pride and disobedience. Although he claimed many victories, his attitude
- 2:19Speaker 2: against God was muddied by his own pride and anxiety.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Now we peer into the heart of Jonathan, Saul's son.
- 2:27Speaker 2: His bravery and resolve to do what is right is
- 2:30Speaker 2: contrasted against Saul's descending heart. Inspired by the book of
- 2:35Speaker 2: 1 Samuel.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Hello, this is Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:41Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our previous story, we
- 2:45Speaker 3: heard of Saul's growing pride and how it led him
- 2:47Speaker 3: to dishonor God with a thoughtless, disobedient sacrifice. When confronted
- 2:53Speaker 3: by Samuel about his disobedience, Saul chose to make excuses
- 2:56Speaker 3: and attempted to justify himself rather than repenting and seeking
- 3:00Speaker 3: God's forgiveness. This would tragically become a pattern in the
- 3:04Speaker 3: life of Saul. Today we'll see a contrast to this
- 3:08Speaker 3: prideful and insecure king in his own son, Jonathan. We'll
- 3:12Speaker 3: hear how Jonathan faces the Philistines and emerges victorious, while
- 3:16Speaker 3: Saul struggles to do things his own way, causing his
- 3:20Speaker 3: own men to suffer unnecessarily. Father and son will clash,
- 3:24Speaker 3: and loyalties will be tested. Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:30Speaker 2: The camp of Israel was still. Preparations for battle were
- 3:34Speaker 2: almost complete. and the men waited silently in their tents
- 3:38Speaker 2: for orders. In his tent, Saul stood in his own
- 3:42Speaker 2: self-loathing because of what Samuel had said. Would his kingdom
- 3:47Speaker 2: be taken away from him so soon? Saul thought to himself. Meanwhile,
- 3:52Speaker 2: Saul's son Jonathan beckoned his armor-bearer and said, Let us
- 3:56Speaker 2: go over the other side of the hill to the
- 3:58Speaker 2: Philistine camp. Perhaps there are weaknesses we are unaware of.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So Jonathan and his servant crossed over the hill silently,
- 4:07Speaker 2: for Jonathan did not desire for any attention or objections.
- 4:12Speaker 2: They climbed over the rocky hill and hid under one
- 4:14Speaker 2: of the crags beside a rock. There they could see
- 4:17Speaker 2: the Philistine camp going about their business. The sun was
- 4:21Speaker 2: making its descent, and the soldiers were getting ready for
- 4:24Speaker 2: the night to fall. Jonathan peered at the Philistine garrison.
- 4:28Speaker 2: There were about twenty men standing on the outskirts of
- 4:30Speaker 2: the rest of the camp. He did not see them
- 4:33Speaker 2: as others did. While others trembled at their numbers, Jonathan
- 4:37Speaker 2: saw men too consumed with their own wickedness to fight bravely.
- 4:41Speaker 2: He knew that the Lord would go before them. Jonathan
- 4:44Speaker 2: and the armor-bearer crouched silently under the rock. Jonathan turned
- 4:48Speaker 2: to his armor-bearer and whispered, Perhaps God will work for
- 4:52Speaker 2: us this day. If God wants victory, he shall get it.
- 4:57Speaker 2: It does not matter whether it is two men or
- 4:59Speaker 2: two thousand. His armor-bearer looked at Jonathan and nodded. I
- 5:04Speaker 2: am with you, heart and soul. The two smiled and
- 5:08Speaker 2: stood upright for the Philistines to see them. They sauntered
- 5:12Speaker 2: into camp and the Philistine soldiers noticed them approaching. The
- 5:15Speaker 2: Philistines were not threatened in the least by Jonathan and
- 5:18Speaker 2: his servant. Hebrews, they laughed. Come on over here, Hebrews.
- 5:23Speaker 2: We will show you around. The Philistines cackled and spat
- 5:27Speaker 2: on the floor. Jonathan and the armor-bearer walked slowly. Jonathan
- 5:31Speaker 2: could feel the favor of God in that place. To him,
- 5:35Speaker 2: it was only a matter of swinging his axe. The
- 5:38Speaker 2: Lord would do the rest. God is before us, Jonathan said,
- 5:43Speaker 2: and the two leapt into the group of men. Jonathan
- 5:46Speaker 2: swung his axe with decisiveness, with his armor-bearer fighting beside him.
- 5:50Speaker 2: The two of them fought off the advances of twenty men.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Metal clashed against metal, and Jonathan struck down every man
- 5:57Speaker 2: that ran towards them. The two of them danced with
- 6:00Speaker 2: their blades, and the rest of the Philistines scattered in confusion.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Darkness began to settle into the sky, and all of
- 6:07Speaker 2: a sudden, the Philistines began to fight one another in confusion.
- 6:11Speaker 2: They thought they were under attack by over a hundred men,
- 6:14Speaker 2: so they stumbled into each other's swords. The watchmen of
- 6:18Speaker 2: Israel could see a restlessness in the Philistine camp below.
- 6:22Speaker 2: They brought word to Saul, and he had his men
- 6:24Speaker 2: count to see who was missing from among them. Jonathan
- 6:28Speaker 2: and his armor-bearer, they reported. So Saul rallied the rest
- 6:33Speaker 2: of the army, and the entirety of Israel's army stormed
- 6:36Speaker 2: the Philistine camp. The battle stretched for miles as Philistines
- 6:41Speaker 2: scattered in a thousand different directions. Confusion and hysteria overcame
- 6:46Speaker 2: the Philistines, for they were caught completely off guard. Some
- 6:51Speaker 2: of the surrounding villages caught word that the Philistines were
- 6:53Speaker 2: running away, so they sent some of their soldiers to
- 6:56Speaker 2: join the Israelite army. God had used Jonathan to scatter
- 7:01Speaker 2: the Philistines, and one by one they fell at his feet.
- 7:05Speaker 2: So the Lord saved Israel that day, and the battle
- 7:08Speaker 2: passed beyond Bethlehem. There were still a vast number of
- 7:12Speaker 2: Philistines to be slain. Saul, in a rash moment of passion,
- 7:16Speaker 2: gave orders for the men to not eat until every
- 7:19Speaker 2: Philistine had been killed. He wanted to incentivize his soldiers,
- 7:24Speaker 2: but instead he left them without fuel or energy for battle. Jonathan, however,
- 7:29Speaker 2: continued to eat. He would snack on honey to replenish
- 7:32Speaker 2: his energy and then return to the battlefield for more victory.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Eat and be filled, Jonathan said to his men. Look
- 7:40Speaker 2: at me, I have eaten and now have the strength
- 7:43Speaker 2: to continue. So Jonathan had his men eat the food
- 7:46Speaker 2: they found in the Philistine camp. Saul soon realized that
- 7:50Speaker 2: his men were growing weaker by the hour, so he
- 7:53Speaker 2: ordered for a feast to be prepared to serve the
- 7:56Speaker 2: men before sending them out again to raid the Philistine cities.
- 8:00Speaker 2: He discovered that Jonathan had been feasting on honey and
- 8:03Speaker 2: giving some to his men as well. Saul's pride sparked
- 8:06Speaker 2: rage inside of him.' What have you done?' Saul yelled.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Jonathan was breathing heavily from battle. He looked closely at
- 8:15Speaker 2: his father. He was growing mad. He could see it
- 8:18Speaker 2: in his eyes. Saul was becoming irresponsible, and his mind
- 8:22Speaker 2: was fogged. Jonathan did not know at this time that
- 8:25Speaker 2: God's favor had been removed from him. Jonathan stood up
- 8:29Speaker 2: straight and said, I ate honey. Jonathan stretched out his
- 8:33Speaker 2: arms and said, Here I am. If I must die,
- 8:37Speaker 2: then so be it. Saul's brow furrowed, and his mouth
- 8:42Speaker 2: tensed up with anger. He pointed to his son and said,
- 8:45Speaker 2: You shall die for it. And Saul lifted his sword
- 8:49Speaker 2: to strike down his son. In that instant, the soldiers
- 8:52Speaker 2: surrounded Jonathan and said, You shall not harm one hair
- 8:56Speaker 2: on his head, for he is the one who has
- 8:58Speaker 2: worked out this salvation for Israel. The soldiers formed a
- 9:02Speaker 2: wall between Saul and Jonathan. In that instant, Saul knew
- 9:07Speaker 2: that he was no longer king. Entitled, yes, but he
- 9:11Speaker 2: did not have the hearts of his men.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Today's story begins on a battlefield. It's a fight with
- 9:20Speaker 3: the Philistines. But rather than being focused on the enemy
- 9:23Speaker 3: at hand, Saul is sulking, licking his wounds after Samuel's chastisement.
- 9:28Speaker 3: He's finally coming into his own as king, and now
- 9:31Speaker 3: God has told him his days as leader are numbered.
- 9:34Speaker 3: His son Jonathan, on the other hand, isn't interested in
- 9:37Speaker 3: fame or glory, but in the battle that was in
- 9:40Speaker 3: front of him and how the Philistine army might be defeated.
- 9:44Speaker 3: He quietly sneaks away with his armor-bearer into the Philistine camp,
- 9:48Speaker 3: confident that God can give him victory if that is
- 9:51Speaker 3: his will. Listen to the words of Jonathan in 1
- 9:55Speaker 3: Samuel 14, 6. Come, let us go over to the garrison.
- 10:00Speaker 3: of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will
- 10:03Speaker 3: work for us for nothing can hinder the Lord from
- 10:06Speaker 3: saving by many or by a few. Jonathan realized something
- 10:10Speaker 3: that we all should remember. When something is God's will
- 10:15Speaker 3: nothing can stop it. Centuries later The Apostle Paul would
- 10:19Speaker 3: write in Romans chapter 8, If God is for us,
- 10:23Speaker 3: who can be against us? So Jonathan and his armor-bearer
- 10:27Speaker 3: face off against 20 Philistines and defeat them. This sends
- 10:31Speaker 3: fear throughout the Philistine camp and soldiers begin to scatter
- 10:34Speaker 3: in confusion. This clash catches the attention of the Israelites
- 10:39Speaker 3: and soon word reaches Saul that Jonathan and his armor-bearer
- 10:43Speaker 3: are missing. No doubt Saul did not want his son
- 10:47Speaker 3: Jonathan to get credit for the victory, so he marshals
- 10:49Speaker 3: his troops for battle. He even calls for the ark
- 10:52Speaker 3: to be brought, but this was no act of devotion
- 10:55Speaker 3: on Saul's part. While Saul maintained an outward appearance of
- 11:00Speaker 3: piety and righteousness, his heart was really focused on his
- 11:03Speaker 3: own glory and power. Once again, Saul acts impatiently, and
- 11:08Speaker 3: Israel goes into battle against the confused Philistines. Many of
- 11:12Speaker 3: their enemies are defeated, but not all. Still, Israel was
- 11:16Speaker 3: saved that day because of Jonathan's courage and action. And
- 11:20Speaker 3: this didn't go unnoticed by the people. Saul isn't satisfied
- 11:24Speaker 3: with the results of the battle, and he wants to
- 11:26Speaker 3: keep going until all the Philistines are defeated. So he
- 11:30Speaker 3: issues a ridiculous command that no sensible commander would dare
- 11:34Speaker 3: give to his men. He vows that no man will
- 11:37Speaker 3: eat until every Philistine is dead. As you would expect,
- 11:41Speaker 3: this foolish command weakens the men. and they are not
- 11:44Speaker 3: strong enough to face a powerful enemy. But Jonathan, wise Jonathan,
- 11:50Speaker 3: does not allow the restrictions to apply to him, and
- 11:53Speaker 3: he nourishes himself with honey. He has his men also
- 11:57Speaker 3: eat from food in the Philistine camp. So Saul finally relents.
- 12:02Speaker 3: He throws a feast for the people so they can
- 12:04Speaker 3: be strengthened for battle. By now he's all about the
- 12:07Speaker 3: grand gestures and displays of his personal power. His terrible
- 12:11Speaker 3: leadership is on full display. But when he discovers Jonathan
- 12:15Speaker 3: has Eden despite the prohibition, Saul confronts his son. Jonathan,
- 12:21Speaker 3: rather than making excuses or hiding the truth, comes clean
- 12:25Speaker 3: with no apologies. But he also submits to whatever punishment
- 12:29Speaker 3: would come his way, including death. Jonathan is a clear
- 12:33Speaker 3: contrast to his father. Jonathan is humble and committed to
- 12:37Speaker 3: the Lord, willing to own his actions. And when Saul
- 12:41Speaker 3: tries to kill his own son to show Israel that
- 12:44Speaker 3: he's the man in charge, the people stand up for
- 12:46Speaker 3: Jonathan and will not allow it. Saul, for all of
- 12:50Speaker 3: his posturing and pride, had lost the command of his people,
- 12:54Speaker 3: just as God said he would. Dear God, help us
- 12:58Speaker 3: to be a man like Jonathan, humble and always trusting
- 13:02Speaker 3: in you and willing to make decisions that honor you.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Thank you for his example in this story today. In Jesus' name.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Amen.
