- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, welcome to the Inside the Birds postgame show
- 0:13Jeff Mosher, Adam Kaplan, and Inside the Birds dot COM's
- 0:16Andrew de Checo. We are here, of course, to wrap
- 0:19up another Eagles win and go inside all the details
- 0:23of a win that over the Chiefs that did not
- 0:25look like the one from seven months earlier in the
- 0:28Super Bowl. Not as much poetry in motion, but it
- 0:31is a win. Nonetheless, the Eagles win twenty to seventeen.
- 0:35They go to two and oh, amazingly, the Chiefs go
- 0:38to oh and two. Let's get our impressions. Adam, you
- 0:42know the Eagles are two and oh. I'm sure for
- 0:44them inside the building. That's the thing that matters the most.
- 0:47Two good wins. How did you see this victory? In
- 0:50your eyes?
- 0:51Speaker 2: This is look, this is tough. This is the Chiefs
- 0:53home opener. Well, the Chiefs had some problems coming to
- 0:56the game. One of the reasons why I picked the
- 0:57Eagles is enough about their passing game. It's really been
- 1:01two years that the Chiefs passing game has been very disappointing.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Then you can remove.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Rachie Rice is their top possession receiver, and then with
- 1:10Worthy who who they really were ready to have a
- 1:12breakout season with his dissocated shoulder, though he got the
- 1:15decent he got some work in late this week, late
- 1:18last week. Technically it was going to be a problem
- 1:20and it was now. Yes, the Eagles had some coverage
- 1:23busts that was interesting, but there are lots of positives
- 1:26guys to We'll get into them in a minute. But
- 1:29I would say overall, this is a survive in advanced game.
- 1:32Some things have to be cleaned up the passing game,
- 1:35but overall there's a lot to be happy about. Because
- 1:38when you hold the Chiefs to just ten points. We
- 1:40could talk about some of the things that went on
- 1:42why they only scored ten points, which we'll get into.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I had seen seventeen.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Give them their credit, seventeen, right, they got to score
- 1:50late twenty to seventeen. The Eagles found a way to win.
- 1:55It's not easy to win on the road, and they
- 1:58got that win there. Very impressive.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Andrew Well, it was a grimy win, as I like say,
- 2:04and it's not easy to win on the road. But
- 2:06I thought the Eagles, particularly on the defensive side of
- 2:08the ball, did a nice job settling in really after
- 2:12the break, and the offense was able to hold up
- 2:15their end and play enough complimentary football to cash in
- 2:18when they had their opportunities. But I thought it was
- 2:21it was one of those wins that you know, obviously
- 2:23wasn't pretty. There's a lot that needs to get cleaned
- 2:25up at already mentioned the passing game, but I thought
- 2:28that Divic Vangio's bunch in that second half really stepped
- 2:32up and answered the bell.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I feel like this is the kind
- 2:36of win that three years ago I might have said
- 2:40the Eagles won, but dot dot dot because it came
- 2:44with its warts and its flaws. But I don't do
- 2:47that as much anymore because the Eagles have kind of
- 2:50trademarked winning this way. I mean, the Chiefs were doing
- 2:52that last year too. They went fifteen to one and
- 2:54seemingly won every game, second half, fourth quarter, bounce of
- 2:58the football. You know, the Eagles are are becoming a very,
- 3:01very defensive minded football team, and I know the fans
- 3:05love defense in this city of Philly, and they're able
- 3:08to compensate at times when their pass offense just isn't there.
- 3:11And this is not the first time we've seen it
- 3:13happened probably countless times last year. And then we get
- 3:16those games out of the blue, whether it's the Super Bowl,
- 3:19the Steelers game, whatever it is, where the pass offense
- 3:22just looks like it's poetry in motion. So to me,
- 3:25this is what you get with the Philadelphia Eagles. There.
- 3:29It's going to look ugly at times, but the defense
- 3:31is coming through and it is another win and it
- 3:34just goes to show. I think you guys can agree
- 3:36on this no matter how the Eagles look sporadically offensively
- 3:39or even sometimes defensively at times, but they are a
- 3:42very tough team to beat, Like you really have to
- 3:44play your best football to beat the Eagles.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I can't disagree with that. Yeah, can't disagree. It's one
- 3:53situation with the Eagles is they kind of know who
- 3:54they are. They play a specific style. Now, I would
- 3:58also tell you as we get into this, eventually this
- 4:00passing game is going to take off. It has to.
- 4:02There's just way too much talent. And by the way,
- 4:04I want to get started on offense. We let's start
- 4:06on offense. The pass protection was incredible. I mean, I
- 4:10don't know what else to tell you. It was phenomenal.
- 4:13What happened with the past game overall is you know,
- 4:16we can't tell off TV, so I'm not gonna guess.
- 4:19But the good thing is that after a they struggled.
- 4:21Their offensive line did not play well Week one, particularly
- 4:24in pass protection. Yes, they had some run blocks they missed,
- 4:27but the pass pro this game against the Chiefs in
- 4:30a hostile environment, sometimes you can't hear because you have
- 4:33to go with the silent count sometimes. But overall, that's
- 4:36one of the many things I thought were very positive
- 4:38from this game.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought so too. I was expecting to hear
- 4:43landon Dickerson's Dickinson's name, a little bit Landon Dickerson's name
- 4:46in the negative, like giving up a pressure or I
- 4:49know he had a false start, But in general, I
- 4:51thought he and Cam played well. Now, I know some
- 4:53people are gonna be like, what are you talking about?
- 4:55There were you know, there were times Jalen Hurts was
- 4:57under duress or he was running folks. There were times
- 5:00that de Spagnola's sending six or seven guys that's not
- 5:03on the offensive line. There were times that Jalen Hurts
- 5:06dropped back to throw, and even if he didn't complete
- 5:09the pass or just had nowhere to go, he had
- 5:12like three, four or five seconds to play. So I
- 5:14thought that was really impressive. Andrew, what did you think
- 5:16overall of the offensive design and concept and the attack plan?
- 5:21Speaker 4: Hey, you know that one guy in the group chat
- 5:24who hit a five leg parlay week one and he
- 5:26wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of the season.
- 5:29Sounds like kaplan, right, Yeah, Yeah, it could be him,
- 5:32It could be you, and we would all want to
- 5:35be you. My bookie makes it stupid easy to get
- 5:39in on the action, whether it's college ball, NFL Super
- 5:43Contest and Survivor pools. All the spreads, player props and
- 5:48in game lines that.
- 5:49Speaker 1: You could want, all under one roof. What more could
- 5:53you want than that?
- 5:55Speaker 5: If you're new to my Bookie, use our code the
- 6:00Birds THG b I rds. The Birds use the code,
- 6:05and any bet U two's up to five hundred dollars
- 6:08is fully covered. Make your play and if it doesn't hit,
- 6:12you get it right back when you opt in using your.
- 6:15Speaker 6: Bet back bonus token. There is no better time to
- 6:20jump in right now. No better place to play football
- 6:23is back. Let's make some money with my Bookie.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Well, it was curious from a passing game standpoint, the
- 6:30routes were very compressed. There was a lot of short
- 6:33passes and dump offs. That first one to John Metch
- 6:36you sort of set the tone there. And when you
- 6:39keep hearing the word evolve and I know it's only
- 6:41been two games, but you expect to see a little
- 6:43bit more of an expansive attack, pushing the ball down
- 6:46the field, using the middle of the field, different little
- 6:49wrinkles that usually accompany the word in that passing game,
- 6:52because it looked it's looked like it has last season.
- 6:56But to your point, on the offensive line, guys, I
- 6:57thought Jordan Melatta and Landon Dickerson played a really or lane.
- 7:02Johnson as well played a really good game. And on
- 7:04that Sekwon barkley thirteen yard run, Tyler Stein had a
- 7:07really good block on Chamari Jones and Cam Jurgen's got
- 7:11to the second level a block up Tranq Will that
- 7:13kind of sprung him untouched.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you did not hear the name Chris Jones.
- 7:18A whole lot as far as wrecking shop or or
- 7:21who's the edge rusher from Purdue that they have whose
- 7:24name is, You just didn't hear them like you you
- 7:28ordinarily do. I agree with you. Offensive line played well
- 7:32I think Adam this week, to Andrew's point, you're gonna
- 7:36hear a lot of questions so the coaches about the
- 7:40evolution or the new iteration of the offense that just
- 7:44not has has not presented itself yet. It just hasn't.
- 7:48There's no evidence to suggest that this offense is any
- 7:50different on a day to day or week to week
- 7:53basis than it was last year. And like you you
- 7:56hit on the head, there's gonna be a game where
- 7:58they come out throwing the ball all over the field
- 8:00and everybody's gonna feel great, but it's it's not something
- 8:03that we've seen as sustainable, and they're gonna get questioned
- 8:05about that this week. I am sure of it.
- 8:09Speaker 2: A friend of mine, Kyle, said it was texting. He goes,
- 8:11I have a feeling in the Rams game, he goes,
- 8:12passing is going to take off. Because maybe if if Stafford,
- 8:16you know, Stafford's played pretty well so far. We'll talk
- 8:18about him later in the week, but maybe sometimes you
- 8:21get that passing tempo game where both quarterbacks going back
- 8:24and forth. You never know about that, but I would
- 8:27say the first half of the first game against Dallas
- 8:29or some really good things from Tulo but since then, again,
- 8:32we won't know for sure until you and I talked
- 8:34to greco cell Monday night about what the tape looked like.
- 8:38Is the pass protection was sublime?
- 8:40Speaker 1: What was and good things?
- 8:42Speaker 2: Hurts didn't bail from the pocket, but was he not
- 8:45pulling the trigger? Were guys o getting open? Typically, as
- 8:48as coaches will tell you, seventy five percent of the time,
- 8:51guys are getting open, but the quarterback doesn't like what
- 8:54he saw. Whatever the case may be, but typically the
- 8:56what you see on TV is not reflective of really
- 8:59what is. And we're going to find out. We'll get
- 9:01the truth from Greg as he always tells us the truth.
- 9:04But I would say this, they know they have to
- 9:09be better. The tape will tell them that and it
- 9:12will just see what happens over time. But offensively, by
- 9:17the way, Barkley looked good. He really did. He hit
- 9:19the hole pretty well. The offensive line did a better job,
- 9:23still not quite where they need to be run blocking.
- 9:26And by the way, just look at my notes here.
- 9:29So a lot two got in a little bit. He
- 9:33came in the second series and I didn't see him
- 9:35for a while. Then I saw him come back. But
- 9:37Grantson was the f tight end if you watch closely,
- 9:40because Granted cannot line up in line. He could tell
- 9:43line up in line. I don't know why. I don't
- 9:45know why they wouldn't use lots in line more than
- 9:48they did. But that's something that they're going to have
- 9:51to figure out because last year, by the way, just
- 9:54charting it pretty much the backup why tight ends for
- 9:59most of the eas and were stalled before they cut him,
- 10:03then use Ama.
- 10:03Speaker 1: That was it.
- 10:04Speaker 2: So they always had someone when god it was out,
- 10:06they had someone could play online as they don't have
- 10:09that guy unless they're willing to use a lot to
- 10:11more like that.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'm surprised they didn't use them very much.
- 10:15He had a nice block in the in the red
- 10:17zone on their touchdown. But outside of that, you saw
- 10:21the divisioncies there with Grant Cackuti. On the very first play,
- 10:24I believe it was Leo Shanew who got off the
- 10:26edge and forced a fumble on Jalen Hurtz. And that's
- 10:29not I mean, that's not Grant Cockata's game. We've talked
- 10:32about that for a number of years now, but I
- 10:34was I was surprised that they put Kylon grantson out
- 10:36there as much as they did and not put Latsu
- 10:38because a Lot two is a really physical player. Thinking
- 10:41the limited sample size that that revealed.
- 10:43Speaker 1: It, Yeah, I think the answer to that, and again
- 10:46that's something that will be revealed in the week, maybe
- 10:48the coaches will talk about it is that it's tough
- 10:51to take a player like Latuo has never played an
- 10:53NFL game before and now you're asking him to sort
- 10:56of play a different kind of position. I know, tight
- 10:58end and fullback has some similarity where you line up
- 11:00and block, but again, something he's never done before. As
- 11:03opposed to Grantson, who's about a three year NFL veteran,
- 11:06I think this is your four four year arrested Yeah,
- 11:10actually right right. So my point is he may not
- 11:12be great, but he has played that role that position,
- 11:16has been doing it for the Eagles since the start
- 11:18of camp, however, and this was the chance for a
- 11:21Lot two to get his feet wet. However, I thought
- 11:23a lot too through a really good block on the
- 11:25Saquon Barkley four yard run that was reviewed. You know,
- 11:29they thought maybe it was a touchdown it stopped short.
- 11:32They get the touchdown on the hurt scamper, But I
- 11:34think if anything, he's probably earned himself some more opportunities
- 11:38as the weeks go on to take on that role
- 11:40or if Goddard continues to get hurt, because it's we
- 11:43all know. I mean, they just don't have really good
- 11:45blocking tight ends when Goddard's not in But I just
- 11:48don't think they were ready to commit to like that
- 11:50role for a Lot two this time against that opponent
- 11:53on the road. You know they got to get out.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Don't know. I don't know that. I mean, if he's
- 11:56out there, you play him as a in line I
- 11:59I which.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Limit his responsibility. Remember you're not trying to also tell
- 12:04the defense what you're doing. And when he's out there,
- 12:06every time I believe was a run. So I mean,
- 12:08you're not going to pass the ball too much with
- 12:10Lot No.
- 12:10Speaker 2: No, But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking
- 12:12about getting him in line because Cranton cannot play in line.
- 12:15He just cannot. He's just not never has, never will.
- 12:18It's just he he's gonna get blown up.
- 12:20Speaker 1: So but if he's in line, don't you think the
- 12:21Chiefs are like, oh, they're running the ball.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Because that doesn't matter. It doesn't mean you're gonna throw it,
- 12:26run it. You could, you could lie. You could have
- 12:28two guys lining up in line and roll at the
- 12:29quarterback out run a sprint option. No that that I
- 12:32hear you. But that doesn't mean you have to run it.
- 12:34Speaker 1: So it doesn't mean by but you give yourself one
- 12:37less better. By the way, the passing game is my point.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Well, by the way, by the way, by the way,
- 12:41first down, how many times do they run the football
- 12:43first down? Every first down? Yeah, it was ridiculous that
- 12:47the whole passing game game plan. Now again, we don't
- 12:52know what the tape looked like yet, but in terms
- 12:54of philosophy, my god, could you give it? Talk about tells? Yeah,
- 13:00seem like Andrew didn't seem like they run it every
- 13:02time on first.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Hand, every time. I mean, we know it's sitting there,
- 13:05here comes a run. Yeah, if we were.

- 14:13That's code birds for a risk free first stake. Yeah. Anyway,
- 14:19on that note, I thought I give credit to Spagnolo
- 14:21because he really he did not He was not afraid
- 14:25to throw the house at times. The Jailen hurts, and
- 14:27you know, for a guy who got burned by it
- 14:29in the Super Bowl, he came back and did his
- 14:31thing and he actually did a good job. I mean
- 14:34there were no Usually when you blitz Jalen hurts like that,
- 14:37you get give up the one on one opportunities that
- 14:40Hurts loves down the sideline, and there were really no sideline.
- 14:43There was one of the two earlier in the game
- 14:46that he missed. I think it was Davante, and he
- 14:48didn't get it until the fourth quarter, right, he finally
- 14:50got the one. Yeah, but if you're Spagnolo, you know
- 14:55you're gonna give up one of those. But you'll trade
- 14:57that for getting Hurts on the run and throwing and
- 15:00throwing wide. And at the end of the day he said, look,
- 15:02I give up twenty points to the Eagles. They have
- 15:04all these offensive weapons. We did our job, but their
- 15:06offense chiefs offense did not do its job. So I
- 15:09credit Spagnolo, But also a nice job by the Eagles
- 15:13offense on a bad day to finally get that play
- 15:16that they really love against those pressures, which is that
- 15:19jump ball that you saw to DeVante. It was a
- 15:21great catch by DeVante. Reminded me of the one he
- 15:24made against Washington a couple of years ago where he
- 15:26goes up against it. He's a kind of made that
- 15:28his thing, and that was really a backbreaking pass play
- 15:33and I'm sure Spags was thinking I knew it was
- 15:34gonna happen. I just was hoping my offense would have
- 15:37gotten me a two touchdown lead at some point before that,
- 15:39or even a lead at that point in the game.
- 15:42Speaker 3: And by the way, Spags and his defense always to
- 15:44render fifteen yards on the ground to Jalen Hurts after
- 15:47Jalen Hurts carved up Dallas his lay.
- 15:50Speaker 1: So Solitz is right. They were blitzing the A gaps,
- 15:54which makes it hard to run out the middle, and
- 15:56I noticed their rushers would rush wide, so he him
- 16:00and then took away the inside running lanes. I swear
- 16:02we've seen teams do this before, and we always say, Man,
- 16:05I wonder if that's a blueprint, like the Niners did
- 16:07that a couple of years ago in the NFC Championship game.
- 16:10But the Eagles always figure out a way then to
- 16:11kind of counteract and or they take advantage of a
- 16:14team that just can't do the way his Spags does it.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think so.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Uh, if you want to move on, I do want
- 16:23to talk about special teams, Braid Man.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll get to I was going to save that
- 16:27for the end because they were they were really important.
- 16:29Speaker 2: We cat actually take we could take care of that
- 16:30real quickly. We could just do that. Now before we
- 16:32get the defense, I got a lot. I got a
- 16:34lot to say on defense, it's really good. But braid
- 16:36Man is I mean, I know it's only two games,
- 16:38but we talked about how great he was in training camp.
- 16:41I mean his last point was forty. But by the way,
- 16:46it just overall he is what's been outstanding. Yeah, and
- 16:51and Elliott Wow, and it was all windy. It was
- 16:55twelve miles an hour, look breezy, and Elliott looks phenomenal.
- 17:00So yeah, they're special to they're specialists. Have been great
- 17:03so far. Touch with kicking a puny Yeah.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I noted that the operation with Braden Man holding and
- 17:08Charlie Hewlett at the new long snapper, that operation has
- 17:11been pretty crisp, real quick.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Braidman apparently it's a phenomenal holder. I heard he's that
- 17:17that's like run. It's in addition to everything else he's
- 17:21done for the Eagles. Uh, he's a phenomenal holder. And
- 17:24it really shows. Elliott is back. I mean, he looks incredible, he.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Looks very good. And by the way, the biggest special
- 17:30teams play. We can't ignore a nice job by A. J.
- 17:33Brown scooping up that onside kicking. Yeah, I guess technically
- 17:38it never went the distance it needed to, but it
- 17:40was a nice job by A. J. Brown. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 17:43all right, good stuff. So that is special. Yeah yeah, listen,
- 17:46that shouldn't be understated. Jake Elliott has made three field
- 17:49goals all of fifty eight, fifty eight and fifty one.
- 17:52I mean, and on the road you make two of them.
- 17:55That's really tough. I mean that he's really back. And
- 17:58if the Eagles are going to be a kind of
- 17:59grind it out and gut it out kind of team
- 18:02so far, then that's really really big.
- 18:04Speaker 3: They're gonna need him. I mean, look, he's obviously kicking
- 18:07with a ton of confidence right now and rightfully so
- 18:09he's had a good summer and he's carrying that over
- 18:12into the regular season so far.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Oh No, one more thing. John Mechi was the kickoff returner.
- 18:17I mean, I know they have to have two guys back,
- 18:18but Mechi returned all three of the kicks.
- 18:20Speaker 3: He lived and it was AJ Dillon, which we all
- 18:23pretty much expected that got the reserve. Was the immediate
- 18:26reserve behind Saquon the tank. Bikby just got to Philadelphia,
- 18:30so I didn't really expect him to be much of
- 18:32a factor offense.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Played on specials. I did see that.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Yeah, he played on specials.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Right, all right, let us switch gears. We'll talk about
- 18:40this Eagles defense against the Chiefs. Now, for everything I
- 18:43said about Steve Spagnolo not being afraid to try to
- 18:47do what he the same blueprint, go after hurts, you know,
- 18:50try to shut down the run. Vic Fangios enters the
- 18:53chat and says, no, hold my beer, I'm gonna do
- 18:56something different. I'm actually going to blitz more than I
- 18:59did the Super Bowl, which we know was a big
- 19:01goose egg in the Super Bowl. And I thought to myself,
- 19:03as I'm watching guys, I'm like, that's really smart. I mean,
- 19:06the Chiefs probably never thought in their wildest dreams that
- 19:10Vic Fangio was going to come at them, and Vic
- 19:11probably felt that the Chiefs felt that way, and he
- 19:14came at him. Now, not like he was throwing cover
- 19:16zeros left and right, but he was pressuring. He was
- 19:19sending guys, and it clearly made Mahomes rattled. I mean,
- 19:22Mahomes got some runs out of it, but he also
- 19:25threw a lot of high rushed passers. The one on
- 19:28the sideline of Marquise Brown, there was one over the
- 19:30head of I think Thornton, one to Kelsey that was
- 19:33a little behind. Yeah, I mean those matter, and those
- 19:37all happened because he was hurried.
- 19:39Speaker 3: There's a player that I highlighted because he really he
- 19:42continues to impress me with his physicality and his ability
- 19:46to set the edge, and that's Non Smith. He plays
- 19:48with a lot of violence. He had a really nice
- 19:50stop on that fourth and one on that first they're
- 19:53down to start the game. He did a nice job
- 19:55to Harry Mahomes and it was the incompletion to Burchard Smith,
- 19:58the running back in the flat. I really like the
- 20:01way that no one plays. He uses his hands well
- 20:04and he plays with controlled violence.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I like that controlled violence. Yeah, that is something Adam
- 20:10we talked about last year. The first half of the
- 20:11year you didn't see and then he really started to
- 20:13learn speed to power and just playing within himself, putting
- 20:17out offensive guards who were trying to pull He's been
- 20:20he's really becoming a good player there.
- 20:23Speaker 2: They had at least seven blitzes in the first half,
- 20:25which was interesting that there's just saying if you can't
- 20:27get home with four, you bring five. You can't come
- 20:29home with five, you bring six, or you start blitzing
- 20:33guys off the A gap, up the A gap. That
- 20:35they they knew it that they had to do something.
- 20:38Their pass rushers are not existent for the most part
- 20:40last week, and they Ojoma had a couple of nice rushes.
- 20:44He had a he had he had his first NFL sack.
- 20:47But the big story was that Darius Smith in early
- 20:51he showed up. Like we'd said earlier this week, we
- 20:55thought he'd play unless he's not in shape. He played
- 20:57and played a lot and seemed to play well well.
- 21:01They hit Mahomes at least ten times. They hit him,
- 21:04They got to him, Yes he had They had the
- 21:06backbreaking runs. But you noticed guys in the first half, Yes,
- 21:10they got a field too many times. They cleaned that up.
- 21:13That was a good adjustment by Fangio and his coaches.
- 21:15They shut down Mahomes in the big runs of the
- 21:17second half. That was really big.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what. I was starting to get like
- 21:22Josh sweat vibes out of Zadarias Smith because not only
- 21:24was he rushing the pass or he was playing the
- 21:26run pretty well, setting the edge. It looked like his
- 21:29athleticism and his length and his size. He has good size,
- 21:33was given given the offensive line trouble for the Chiefs,
- 21:37and he can wind up being a sneaky good pick
- 21:39I mean he should be a It shouldn't be a
- 21:41sneaky good pick up. He's been a really good player
- 21:43in the league. But you throw him into a rotation
- 21:45now with an improving Nolan Smith right and Jylex Hunt,
- 21:49who's gonna keep getting better and learning how to play
- 21:51the position, and you got yourself a nice little three
- 21:54man rotation there. And I thought it showed up. I
- 21:56thought it made a difference. And again I think vic
- 21:59fan Angio was willing to make a trade off, just
- 22:02like Steve was right with the deep ball. As long
- 22:04as he's getting a lot of pressure. He was willing
- 22:07to give up some scrambles to Mahomes for the for
- 22:11the upside of also pressuring Mahomes into making a lot
- 22:14of throws that were off target. And there was one.
- 22:17There was one drive in late in the third quarter.
- 22:20It was third down. He sent Campbell on a blitz up.
- 22:23The a gap was a five man rush. Campbell got
- 22:25in Mahomes face and he threw the ball. I forget
- 22:28who he was throwing to but it wasn't complete because
- 22:31it was hurried. It wasn't the one where he overthrew Thornton.
- 22:34It was like right either before or after that. I
- 22:37think it was actually before on the drive before and
- 22:39those little things that knowing when to send that fifth
- 22:43guy was something that we saw from Vic that we
- 22:46didn't have to see in the Super Bowl or other times.
- 22:48So it was really good, good strategy there.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and real quick on Zadarius Smith, you could tell
- 22:54talking to him last week that he was itching to
- 22:56get back out and play in a regular season game.
- 22:59And he definitely added some juice to the pass rush
- 23:01and you could see his size really come into play.
- 23:04I thought he brought some really good energy to that
- 23:06group and he'll be the third edge rusher. And the
- 23:08Eagles also worked Josh uche In and he had a
- 23:10couple of nice plays, limiting at Pacheco for a two
- 23:13yard run early in the game, and then he had
- 23:15another one where he got into the backfield.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Noah Gray, by the way, was the guy
- 23:21I was saying who he threw wide off because Campbell
- 23:23was blitzing into his face. So this is a defensive
- 23:27Eagles team. Now, I guess and Andrew. Have we talked
- 23:29about Andrew mcoobaugh.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Obviously No, that was obviously a huge play. I'm sure
- 23:33the Chiefs are thinking, Okay, that was some bad luck,
- 23:36but hey, you know what, you make your own luck.
- 23:39That was an unbelievable return. He's a guy that a
- 23:42number of big plays in college. That was obviously the
- 23:45game changer and they were able to go up by ten.
- 23:49But overall, the good thing is they kind of rebounded
- 23:52after last week. Let's not forget the Cowboys had at
- 23:55least four drops. One would have been a touchdown, and
- 23:57they played much better this week. The matchups were much
- 24:00better for them because of the guys who were missing
- 24:01for the Chiefs, and they really shut him down. I
- 24:03know they had a cover coverage busts in the fourth quarter,
- 24:06which they'll clean up, but there are a lot of
- 24:08good stories. And Dorry Jackson, by the way, played much
- 24:11better in this game, much better.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Did he did?
- 24:14Speaker 3: Now mention that.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Granted there's no CD lamb out there, but he did
- 24:18play much better. You got to give him these credits.
- 24:20Speaker 3: All you can all you can do is play against
- 24:22who you're lining up against. And I thought I thought
- 24:23he'd did a nice job.
- 24:25Speaker 1: That is true, very very very true. Back to Macouba, Andrew,
- 24:29you were on him from the start. He just it
- 24:32just seems like he's such a natural fit for what
- 24:34Vic wants to do. And then on top of that,
- 24:37he just is always in the right place in the
- 24:39right time. We saw that against the Browns in the preseason,
- 24:42and he'll like think about it. His momentum. He is
- 24:44going toward the play right, it's a it's a past
- 24:47to Kelsey. He's the post safety he's coming to. But
- 24:50at the top, as the ball is bouncing off of
- 24:52Kelsey's hands, Kelsey is cutting in and Yakuba is going
- 24:56to him, going the opposite direction so to maintain the
- 25:00the concentration to see the ball into his hands as
- 25:02Kelsey's coming in front of him and he's going the
- 25:04other way. And then the takeoff is an example of
- 25:08the playmaking that he showed at Texas right, and just
- 25:10that ability to be there when you need him to be. Hey,
- 25:13fall is planting season. Did you know that many plants

- 26:40Speaker 3: Yeah, he was my third rated safety coming out of
- 26:42the draft. You've seen plenty of my mock drafts. I
- 26:44had him as a late too because of the ball skill,
- 26:48because of the high level football intelligence and the just
- 26:52the versatility and what he brings to that back end,
- 26:54allowing it to be multiple and when you see someone
- 26:57like Vic Vangio go to him one. Obviously he was
- 27:00a second round pick, but he didn't play last snaps
- 27:02in the summer. That shows you the kind of confidence
- 27:04that they have in him. And he did mention he
- 27:06played okay in the opener and reference a couple He
- 27:09called it major bust. That didn't hurt the Eagles or
- 27:12they could have hurt them more. But I thought in
- 27:14this game, aside from you know, I played that Mahomes
- 27:17had against him in the running game on third down
- 27:19he had. He definitely stepped up in a big way,
- 27:22and that's what he can do. Take the football away,
- 27:24and that's why he's that's why he's back there.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know he's good. He's gonna make mistakes.
- 27:29He is a rookie, Adam. He saw he also had
- 27:31a penalty a defensive hold. They sat on the broad
- 27:35they set it on on the right up or the
- 27:37whoever does the stats that it was Quinion Mitchell, but
- 27:39it was Macouba that had the defensive hold that negated
- 27:43the sack between Davis and I think Carter on third down.
- 27:48Then you also saw him sort of get I don't
- 27:50know if it's trampled, but Travis Kelcey sort of show
- 27:52voted with one hand as he's raked around. And so
- 27:55he had a couple of plays. He got truck pad
- 27:57by Mahomes at the end of a fifteen yard run.
- 28:00So what when you see him able to kind of
- 28:02respond and come up with the biggest player of the game,
- 28:04he say that it's great. You know, rookie's gonna have
- 28:07rookie moments and then he's gonna come through and make
- 28:09some real plays. So the question is does he get
- 28:12fined in kangaroo court though for getting chased down by
- 28:15a guy who weighs for the Yeah, is.
- 28:19Speaker 2: A pretty good athlete for a left tack. Yeah, remember
- 28:22he's coming off the torn betel at tenant. But overall,
- 28:25the defense just you know, in this game, particular comparatively
- 28:29to the Cowboys game really rebounded well. They played disciplined.
- 28:34The Sadarius Smith addition, we'll see what the snapcount looks like.
- 28:39I'm surprised that he played as much as he did,
- 28:41at least appeared to have played, considering he had not
- 28:44practiced prior to this week since January. That's it's amazing.
- 28:49But he see here's the thing. We know they're telling
- 28:52you he was in great shape. They wouldn't have played
- 28:54him like they did.
- 28:55Speaker 1: That's the thing.
- 28:56Speaker 3: The last time he played in the game Adam was
- 28:58January eighteenth against the Lions, or with the Lions went
- 29:01in the playoffs against the Commanders.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Think about that, I mean you're think about you're talking
- 29:08about over nine months or about nine months. That's incredible.
- 29:10He had not even been with the team this spring.
- 29:12That's really he's a true pro. That is a big
- 29:15time to do. That. Really nice signing. They beat the Lions.
- 29:20I know the line for a fact had interested in
- 29:22bringing them back. I don't know if they were going
- 29:23to do anything, but they had interest all off season.
- 29:25If they cut them, he was making way too much money.
- 29:27But this is a really quality signing for a team
- 29:30that's got to find a pass rush and they really did.
- 29:32Sacks are great, they're cherries on top, so to speak,
- 29:37but it's the quarterback pressures, which talking to coaches over
- 29:39here is a little bit more important to them, and
- 29:42they got They hit mahomes a lot. That was the
- 29:44great thing. They collapsed that pocket a lot.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough, parking, traffic,
- 29:51long lions, We've all been there, But when it comes
- 29:54to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is

- 30:42great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 30:45one and up. Yes, they absolutely did. And you know what,
- 30:49they're gonna need it next week too, because you got
- 30:51the two and oh rams coming to town. The schedule
- 30:54really is not any lighter. As we you don't proceed
- 30:58throughout the week, So let's finish it up on this, Adam.
- 31:01You give me one thing that you really like and
- 31:03one thing that you're concerned about. Headed into week three.
- 31:07Speaker 3: A lot to like.
- 31:09Speaker 2: The good thing is And I knew what would happen,
- 31:11because I think what happens is when you see an
- 31:14offensive line that you know is elite. They shock us
- 31:17for the first time and out on how many years
- 31:19they don't play well Week one. It wasn't just one
- 31:21or two plays. It was enough that you go, you
- 31:23start scratch your head a little bit. They rebound, they
- 31:26rebounded nicely the pass the game. I'm not as pessimistic
- 31:32as some people are I've seen what's in social media.
- 31:34I'm aware and I'm not absolving hurts from this. The
- 31:38tape's gonna tell us when we talked to Greg, we
- 31:41tape inside the when we record inside the tape. But
- 31:45he's had a number of play callers. He's got another one.
- 31:48It's just you got to get throw of the process.
- 31:51You just can't snap your fingers. This is not good.
- 31:54We know that the passing game was pathetic for the
- 31:57most part on Sunday. It's got to be better. It's
- 31:59going to be better. Not everything's gonna be great. They won,
- 32:02you know, by the way they won. When your quarterback
- 32:07throws for one hundred and one yards and you win,
- 32:12and quite frankly, in the second half of its kind
- 32:15of like it looks like Beagles have a lot of
- 32:17momenimum of the The Chiefs scored late to make it
- 32:19twenty to seventeen. But when you when you do that,
- 32:22when your quarterback on throws for one hundred one yards
- 32:24and you still win, you gotta feel good about because
- 32:28you know it's going to be better. It's it's just
- 32:30eventually going to be better. It has to.
- 32:32Speaker 1: There you go and you're in one concern we No.
- 32:35Speaker 2: That was my concern the passage.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Oh right, right, yeah, the quarterback. Okay, gotcha, Andrew. One
- 32:39thing you're encouraged by. One thing you're concerned with.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Encouraged by the development of the first and second round
- 32:44pickch jo Hot Campbell and Drew mccoubla. They're going to
- 32:46be mainstays on that defense. And I think that they
- 32:49are right on schedule at least a pearod that that's
- 32:51the way that it appears, and and they're going to
- 32:53be somebody that they're gonna have to lean on so
- 32:56to this early on. To be able to make plays
- 32:58like they have, I think is a testament to the
- 33:01coaching and to their ability to pick up the plays.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Good stuff. One thing I want to say that fans
- 33:07should be proud of. For those of you who are
- 33:09in your forties or fifties, when is the last time
- 33:12you saw linebacker play like this? Un I'm playing linebacker, right,
- 33:16Vic calls him Ilb's Andrew is in your mid thirties,
- 33:20Andrew your lifetime.
- 33:21Speaker 3: You've ever seen late late thirties?
- 33:23Speaker 2: Okay, if you ever see anything like this at linebacker
- 33:26for the football team.
- 33:27Speaker 3: I have not, And it's certainly not hyperbole Adam to
- 33:30say this is the most dynamic second level tandement the
- 33:33Eagles have had, and I don't know, maybe ever, it's
- 33:37really impressive with Zach Vaughan and John Campbell ideally complimenting
- 33:42each other with their skill sets. And then I guess
- 33:44the one area of concern would be, like Adam alluded to,
- 33:46the passing game, and I do believe it's going to
- 33:49get corrected. It's going to take a little bit of time.
- 33:51They're not just going to be able to roll things
- 33:53right out. Kevin Patulo is gonna you know, it's a
- 33:56second game calling plays. The players are going to come.
- 34:00The players are gonna come. But today, you know, obviously
- 34:03it wasn't good enough and it left a lot to
- 34:05be desired.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I was encouraged, as you mentioned before, with the
- 34:08bounce back by the offensive line. I thought they were
- 34:10really really well in a tough place to play well
- 34:12where it's loud. They obviously had to rely on the
- 34:15silent count for the first time this year with the
- 34:19right guard Tyler Steen having to be a big part
- 34:22of that on the look back, So they did a
- 34:23really good job there. The only thing I'm a little
- 34:27I don't want to say discourage, but we just have
- 34:29not seen It's only two weeks. Really haven't seen the
- 34:32signature Saquon Barkley breakout game or a breakout run he
- 34:36used to own the second half. He really hasn't had
- 34:38that yet. And I don't know if that's team's really
- 34:41trying to take him out or if it just lanes
- 34:43aren't there. But you know, he has made some tough
- 34:46yards on his own, but he still hasn't had the big,
- 34:48backbreaking one yet. I thought that was gonna come in
- 34:51the second half against the Chiefs.
- 34:53Speaker 6: It did not.
- 34:53Speaker 1: We'll see if it comes against the Rams or down
- 34:56the road that's gonna do it. For this episode of
- 34:58the Inside the Birds PO game show for Andrew to
- 35:01checko Adam Kaplan, I'm Jeff Mosher, Thanks for watching. Catch
- 35:05you all on the next one.
