- 0:00Speaker 1: There was a piece that.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I wanted to refer to from the athletic Jana Bartell,
- 0:08Speaker 2: who is one of the really good college football writers
- 0:12Speaker 2: in come and compiled I love compilations.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I have to show you a book.
- 0:18Speaker 2: One of the Christmas gifts that Linda gave me is
- 0:21Speaker 2: at like one of these big coffee table books, and
- 0:25Speaker 2: the book is like seeing it and beautiful golf courses
- 0:31Speaker 2: from around the world. So I know, you get oh look, yeah, yeah,
- 0:37Speaker 2: I ought to show it to you. It's all this,
- 0:39Speaker 2: but it's a compilation, and I like compilations of things
- 0:44Speaker 2: sometimes where you can kind of compare and read and
- 0:46Speaker 2: see how things progress and all this. Well, anyway, there's
- 0:51Speaker 2: a compilation of college football's most memorable moments in twenty
- 0:57Speaker 2: twenty four. Now I'm going to review some of this
- 1:00Speaker 2: with you. Can you tell me if you agree or
- 1:03Speaker 2: disagree on how they place it? Okay, most memorable moments?
- 1:08Speaker 2: Here it comes the biggest coaching news. What would you
- 1:13Speaker 2: say the biggest coaching news was it has to be
- 1:15Speaker 2: Belichick becoming the new unc EDG coach. Well no, uh,
- 1:21Speaker 2: it's actually Nick Saban retiring. Okay, all right, you know
- 1:29Speaker 2: what number two was?
- 1:30Speaker 1: For them.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It wasn't Belichick was actually number three. You know what
- 1:33Speaker 2: number two was. Number two was Charles Huff, the guy
- 1:39Speaker 2: at Marshall that left for Southern miss And it just
- 1:43Speaker 2: cratered the conference champion, the Sun Belt champion, Marshall's Bowl situation.
- 1:49Speaker 2: They had to opt out of the bowl because of that,
- 1:52Speaker 2: So that was kind of weird.
- 1:54Speaker 3: There's more casual fans out there that could not tell
- 1:57Speaker 3: who Charles Huff is, but could tell you that Belichick
- 1:59Speaker 3: is the next and see it goes, and that to
- 2:01Speaker 3: me is why that would be number two.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Okay, all right, Yeah, like I said that in talking
- 2:05Speaker 2: about Saban, the departure of college football's greatest coach kick
- 2:09Speaker 2: started a butterfly effect that impacted thirty eight Power five schools,
- 2:14Speaker 2: twenty five Group of Five schools, thirty four lower level organizations,
- 2:19Speaker 2: more than a dozen high schools, and ten NFL organizations.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Okay, that reasoning makes sense. Okay, all right, best upset,
- 2:28Speaker 4: M I think maybe Northern Illinois is over Notre Dame.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Ding ding ding ding ding ding.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Yeah, there wasn't that many big upsets this season in
- 2:34Speaker 3: terms of top twenty five teams. I mean, obviously Florida
- 2:38Speaker 3: State to start the year. But yeah they won what
- 2:41Speaker 3: won two games?
- 2:42Speaker 2: So yeah, uh yeah, they just listed as the best
- 2:45Speaker 2: way Uh did you see? And I guess then it
- 2:49Speaker 2: turned out to be the best the best game day
- 2:53Speaker 2: picker for college game Day, Miss Terry No, Timothy Shallomy,
- 2:57Speaker 2: Oh you did last weekend It's said he knew more
- 3:00Speaker 2: about college football and we thought although his way too
- 3:02Speaker 2: early Heisman pick of Kevin Jennings took a hits and
- 3:05Speaker 2: the Mustangs lost to Penn State. They mentioned that Shane
- 3:10Speaker 2: Gillis calling Saban Alabama Jones was.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Hilarious but shame.
- 3:19Speaker 2: But they say Shamus the guy, the Irish guy, the
- 3:22Speaker 2: WWE guy for the first game of the year picked
- 3:25Speaker 2: Notre Dame to win the national championship.
- 3:26Speaker 1: They're saying to keep an eye on that.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Okay, where does Vanderbilt over Alabama rank among college football's
- 3:34Speaker 2: biggest number one upsets?
- 3:36Speaker 4: Biggest in terms ever.
- 3:37Speaker 2: By a number one team, Because four number one teams
- 3:41Speaker 2: have lost to an unranked opponent and then went on
- 3:44Speaker 2: to win the national title LSU and O seven USC
- 3:47Speaker 2: in sixty seven Minnesota and sixty Notre Dame in forty three,
- 3:50Speaker 2: it will not be the case obviously for the Crinston
- 3:51Speaker 2: died and to make the playoff. So anyway, they said
- 3:55Speaker 2: where does it rank? They put it in there, and
- 3:57Speaker 2: they say it's right in there because it kind of
- 3:59Speaker 2: helped derail the Alabama season.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Interesting, yeah, and they lost three games that year.
- 4:04Speaker 2: This year most memorable moment runner up, they say, is
- 4:08Speaker 2: the Ohio State Michigan flag plan team. Okay, yeah, but
- 4:13Speaker 2: the most memorable moment is Vanderbilt forty Alabama thirty five.
- 4:18Speaker 4: So which would you say? Would you agree with that?
- 4:22Speaker 1: It's up there? You know, here's the thing that's so
- 4:24Speaker 1: weird about that.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You know, on those SEC fan sites they ragged on
- 4:29Speaker 2: Texas for barely beating Vanderbilt.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Vanderbilt beat Alabama.
- 4:33Speaker 3: See, I think the most memorable moment was I think
- 4:36Speaker 3: Ryan Williams hit his touchdown grabbed to beat Georgia in
- 4:40Speaker 3: which he's spun around to Georgia defenders. I think that
- 4:43Speaker 3: was more memorable because that I think that's the play
- 4:46Speaker 3: of the year. Okay, I'm not sure if Vanderbilt at Alabama.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I just don't think it's that memorable. Okay. It's funny
- 4:55Speaker 1: because they list is the.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Some of the storylines that they're talking looking about the
- 5:01Speaker 2: Birmingham Bowl, which has no sponsors. We know is Georgia
- 5:04Speaker 2: Tech and Vanderbilt, and they had some of those great moments.
- 5:07Speaker 2: They're saying that might be the best bowl game or
- 5:10Speaker 2: one of my best bowl games.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Tomorrow two thirty.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Las Vegas Bowl they think will be really compelling
- 5:16Speaker 2: USC against A and M tomorrow night. The Trojans are
- 5:20Speaker 2: returning to where they began their season. Remember they beat
- 5:23Speaker 2: LSU in Las Vegas. That was on Labor Day night,
- 5:27Speaker 2: I think Saturday. Boston College and Nebraska playing in the
- 5:31Speaker 2: Pinstripe Bowls Huskers reaching bowl eligibility for the first time
- 5:36Speaker 2: since twenty sixteen to snap the longest postseason drop among
- 5:40Speaker 2: Power four teams.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I did not realize that Pop Tart's Bowl.
- 5:45Speaker 2: We talked about the Povey since it's everyone's favorite bowl.
- 5:49Speaker 2: But it's got a pretty cool thing to what it's
- 5:53Speaker 2: It's Miami and Ohio and Iowa State. And then and
- 5:56Speaker 2: Linda pointed this out to me. They have a fully
- 5:59Speaker 2: functioning toaster on the trophy, the trophy that goes to
- 6:04Speaker 2: the winning team has a fully functional toaster.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Wow.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Remember last year they ate the mask out. Are they
- 6:11Speaker 4: gonna do it again this year?
- 6:11Speaker 2: Well, I think though they didn't say that, and maybe
- 6:14Speaker 2: that might have drawn some blowback on that deal, even
- 6:18Speaker 2: though it was an actual pop dart and not the
- 6:20Speaker 2: goofy guy in the pop dart thing that disappeared, But
- 6:23Speaker 2: it looked kind of creepy.
- 6:25Speaker 1: It looked a little weird.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Alibi Bowl could be interesting b Yu and Colorado. It's
- 6:31Speaker 2: very interesting that it's two Big twelve teams playing each other,
- 6:37Speaker 2: but because Colorado is viewed as a quote unquote Pac
- 6:42Speaker 2: twelve legacy school and the two didn't play each.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Other during the year, so that makes it okay.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Apparently the porcupine at the San Antonio Zoo picked Colorado.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Wow, yeah, so wow, it's an unfortunately for the Cougars.
- 7:01Speaker 2: The zoo animals have a pretty good track record of
- 7:03Speaker 2: picking the bowl game winner every year. So anyway, Uh so,
- 7:09Speaker 2: there's there's a couple of other couple other interesting elements
- 7:13Speaker 2: that that are going into the bowl games for the Okay,
- 7:17Speaker 2: is there a specific bowl game that you have some
- 7:21Speaker 2: interest in that is not obviously in the playoffs a
- 7:25Speaker 2: CFP playoff game, it's not part of the New Year
- 7:28Speaker 2: six or any of that.
- 7:30Speaker 1: It's just a bowl game itself.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Is there a specific bowl game that you have interested in, Say, hey,
- 7:36Speaker 2: I think I'd really like to watch that.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I think, just in terms of watchability, I think Vanderbilt
- 7:41Speaker 3: Georgia Tech will be a lot of fun. Love Haynes
- 7:43Speaker 3: King loved Diego Pavia. There'll it'll, it should be a
- 7:47Speaker 3: great game. And then I'm interested also in Colorado BYU
- 7:51Speaker 3: just because of Colorado and Travis Hunter and Dion and
- 7:54Speaker 3: all that, and you know.
- 7:55Speaker 4: They're They're a fun show to watch.
- 7:57Speaker 3: You know, there's one of the most exciting college football
- 8:00Speaker 3: teams that's not in the playoffs. So I look forward
- 8:02Speaker 3: to watching that in Their guys aren't sitting out and
- 8:05Speaker 3: Taki is a fantastic head coach. On the BYU side,
- 8:08Speaker 3: they're going to be ready to play.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I'm going to give you two other ones. I agree
- 8:13Speaker 2: with you on your choices there, I'm going to give
- 8:14Speaker 2: you two other ones. One don't snicker when I say
- 8:19Speaker 2: the name of the bowl until you hear a little
- 8:21Speaker 2: more about The matchup is the Go Bowling Military Bowl.
- 8:26Speaker 2: It's East Carolina and North Carolina State. And when they
- 8:33Speaker 2: played before in the Peach Bowl, game. This is about
- 8:36Speaker 2: ninety two or ninety three, and East Carolina was down
- 8:41Speaker 2: seventeen points and they came back and won, and then
- 8:45Speaker 2: they just kind of almost rioted on the field. All
- 8:47Speaker 2: this stuff and those who don't like each as you know,
- 8:49Speaker 2: they're about an hour and a half apart from Raleigh
- 8:52Speaker 2: to Greenville, and there's been some bad blood when they've played.
- 8:56Speaker 1: So now they're going to play in a bowl game.
- 8:58Speaker 1: So there's that.
- 9:00Speaker 2: And then hey, I gotta admit I'm kind of interested
- 9:03Speaker 2: in the Relyquest Bowl.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Let's see Alabama and Michigan.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Let's see how Alabama responds to not being included in
- 9:12Speaker 2: the playoff. And Michigan, which kind of feels energized and
- 9:17Speaker 2: recharged after beating Ohio State, how they look on that.
- 9:22Speaker 2: You know, Alabama and these were Nick Saban. Alabama coached
- 9:27Speaker 2: teams had come in for some criticism if they didn't
- 9:32Speaker 2: make the BCS National Championship Game or the playoff. It
- 9:36Speaker 2: been often said they kind of mailed in their bowl
- 9:38Speaker 2: performance and that included a major bowl. Now in the
- 9:41Speaker 2: case of Florida State last year in the Orange Bowl,
- 9:44Speaker 2: Florida State had a lot of guys opt out and
- 9:47Speaker 2: injuries and they were disappointed about being in the playoff.
- 9:50Speaker 2: I'm not excusing it. I'm just saying it was probably
- 9:53Speaker 2: a little more understandable. Remember when Alabama played Utah in
- 9:59Speaker 2: the Sugar Bowl and got throttled because they didn't really care.
- 10:03Speaker 2: And some folks try to make that claim about Georgia
- 10:06Speaker 2: against Texas when they played, and Kirby Smart shut that
- 10:09Speaker 2: down real quick. He said, no, no, our guys cared. Yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 2: there were there were a few guys that didn't play,
- 10:13Speaker 2: but it wasn't like a whole raft or rosters like
- 10:16Speaker 2: two dbs and a running back that didn't play. But
- 10:20Speaker 2: he said, we had enough to win and should have
- 10:22Speaker 2: won the game, and they didn't, got down twenty one
- 10:24Speaker 2: nothing and Texas ends up winning at twenty eight twenty
- 10:26Speaker 2: one when they're up twenty eight to seven and the
- 10:28Speaker 2: fourth quarter. But sometimes high profile college football teams can be,
- 10:36Speaker 2: and sometimes rightly so, accused of not caring, even if
- 10:40Speaker 2: it's a big bowl game, a New Year's six Bowl,
- 10:43Speaker 2: which I just find absolutely preposterous and ridiculous.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So we'll see. I know this if.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Alabama doesn't do well and they get dog walked by
- 10:54Speaker 2: Michigan in that bowl game. Everybody who's gonna do right now,
- 10:59Speaker 2: right now is saying SMU should not have been in
- 11:01Speaker 2: the playoff.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Alabama deserved to be in the playoff.
- 11:03Speaker 2: If Alabama doesn't win that bowl game, there's gonna be
- 11:06Speaker 2: people say no, no, no, they didn't deserve to be in Look,
- 11:08Speaker 2: they lost to somebody else.
- 11:09Speaker 1: They should have shouldn't have lost it.
- 11:11Speaker 2: So that's gonna come up in addition to the losses
- 11:13Speaker 2: to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma. But that way, Hey, whether whether
- 11:18Speaker 2: the Vanderbilt win over Alabama was the biggest moment of
- 11:21Speaker 2: the year or the biggest upset of the year, or
- 11:22Speaker 2: whatever you want to say, I would think the Alabama
- 11:26Speaker 2: loss in Norman, Oklahoma was so much on the line
- 11:28Speaker 2: and then in the driver's seat to be in the playoff.
- 11:32Speaker 1: That to me might be the most stunning development of
- 11:34Speaker 1: the season.
- 11:35Speaker 2: To go in the Norman like that and play that
- 11:37Speaker 2: poorly and get beat soundly by Oklahoma. A team that
- 11:42Speaker 2: was headed for a losing record. Now they're headed for
- 11:44Speaker 2: Fort Worth in the Armed Forces Bowl because they won
- 11:46Speaker 2: that game. So something to keep in mind. All right,
- 11:49Speaker 2: We've got more coming up. Steve with us here on
- 11:51Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zonner, the IR Radio
