- 0:29Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Business Roundtable Podcast. I'm your guest,
- 0:33Speaker 1: host of your guests, and a host all of one,
- 0:36Speaker 1: David car Star your Business. I've got my guest here,
- 0:39Speaker 1: Joel Clelland who I've known for years. We're going to
- 0:41Speaker 1: get into a great word for this episode. We were
- 0:44Speaker 1: just talking right before we recorded this. I have known
- 0:46Speaker 1: Joel Gosh for over twenty plus years. Has been I
- 0:50Speaker 1: lost account. But Joel is a great friend, a great colleague.
- 0:54Speaker 1: He has just a vast array of experience. He's particularly
- 0:59Speaker 1: been in the education space for quite a while, but
- 1:01Speaker 1: he's an entrepreneur, he is a musician, he's worked with nonprofits,
- 1:07Speaker 1: and he has just got a wealth of experience. And
- 1:09Speaker 1: so welcome to the Business round Table Podcast. Joel, glad
- 1:12Speaker 1: to have you here.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:14Speaker 1: David, super super excited to have you here. Joel and
- 1:17Speaker 1: I have been talking about, hey, let's do an episode.
- 1:20Speaker 1: What could that be? And we're going to have to
- 1:22Speaker 1: talk about a couple of different things. But I really
- 1:24Speaker 1: like the word that Joel brought up as we were
- 1:27Speaker 1: brainstorming about what do we want to talk about in
- 1:29Speaker 1: this episode, and the word ambition came up, and you
- 1:33Speaker 1: know that word can be positive to some and hopefully
- 1:36Speaker 1: it is to Joel and I, but it'd also be
- 1:38Speaker 1: negative to others. And we're going to kind of talk
- 1:40Speaker 1: and unpack this ambitious life as a as a leader,
- 1:44Speaker 1: as a business owner, as a father, as a husband.
- 1:47Speaker 1: How do we do all these things in this crazy life?
- 1:49Speaker 1: And so I really thought, Joel, I really liked you
- 1:51Speaker 1: bringing up that word ambition. So we're going to dig
- 1:55Speaker 1: into that. But before we dig into that word, I
- 1:58Speaker 1: want you, Joel, to share your ambitious life, what you
- 2:01Speaker 1: got you here, So give us a brief, a brief
- 2:04Speaker 1: high level of you know where you came from. You
- 2:07Speaker 1: and I met back I think in the college days
- 2:10Speaker 1: or right around.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, definitely, and there was definite around.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Times and things right, but but you know your journey
- 2:17Speaker 1: to you know where you are now in business in particular.
- 2:20Speaker 1: We're going to get into family life and other things,
- 2:22Speaker 1: but just walk us through who you are, Joel, and
- 2:24Speaker 1: a little bit for our audience, they get to know
- 2:26Speaker 1: you a little better for sure.
- 2:28Speaker 3: And David, if I recall, we definitely crossed paths in
- 2:31Speaker 3: the mobile disc jockey world.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Yes we did, Yes, for many another world right were
- 2:37Speaker 1: we were both mobile DJs MC music. Absolutely.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I've been married to my wonderful wife for
- 2:47Speaker 2: for coming up on twenty eight years. And one of
- 2:51Speaker 2: the things I was thinking about is I was getting
- 2:53Speaker 2: ready to hop on your show, was.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I'm a married father of five of trying to make
- 3:01Speaker 3: things happen in twenty twenty five, twenty twenty five Southern California,
- 3:07Speaker 3: and I know at times it's rather exhausting to be
- 3:11Speaker 3: honest mentally and emotionally and physically.
- 3:15Speaker 2: That being said, I would trade any of it all
- 3:19Speaker 2: for all the money in Fort Knox, which.
- 3:26Speaker 1: What's in there, I know exactly ex.
- 3:30Speaker 3: But I've, like you said, I've been hanging my hat
- 3:33Speaker 3: in the education space for many, many many years. I
- 3:37Speaker 3: dabbled in in the insurance industry for well over ten years,
- 3:41Speaker 3: ten to fifteen years, and I was I ran ran
- 3:46Speaker 3: a company for for almost three years in the digital
- 3:51Speaker 3: digital currency space. And you know, it's it's interesting that
- 3:57Speaker 3: word ambition, because I've been in conversations where that just
- 4:02Speaker 3: the word itself has come up, and I've gotten two
- 4:04Speaker 3: different takes on the word. And some people they think
- 4:09Speaker 3: that it's a bad thing because.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I'm sure there's there's some time on the therapist's couch
- 4:16Speaker 3: that they'll need work through for that.
- 4:17Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, I think, as
- 4:19Speaker 2: long as you know, you keep your ego in check
- 4:23Speaker 2: and your.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Just your ability to care for yourself and others in check,
- 4:31Speaker 3: why not be as amazing as you can be, whatever
- 4:33Speaker 3: that means for you, and whether that's it for athletes
- 4:38Speaker 3: or for business people or people operating in any sector,
- 4:43Speaker 3: and even just you know, personal development, like what's next
- 4:46Speaker 3: for me? You know, I turned fifty a couple of
- 4:49Speaker 3: years ago, and I was thinking to myself, I don't
- 4:53Speaker 3: want to retire. I know people my age that are
- 4:55Speaker 3: are getting broken down, have disabilities, and they're thinking about
- 5:00Speaker 3: stopping what they've been doing for many, many years. And
- 5:03Speaker 3: I just you know, the word retire, the definition is
- 5:08Speaker 3: to put out of use, be put out to pasture.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And I don't want to be put out to pasture.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I want to visit pastures.
- 5:16Speaker 3: The serenity of a pastor, right, you know, I don't
- 5:19Speaker 3: want to be I don't want to be put out
- 5:20Speaker 3: of use. I don't I don't believe I'll ever fully retire.
- 5:25Speaker 3: But I think because retirement as a concept is a
- 5:29Speaker 3: very it's a fairly new concept in the human timeline,
- 5:34Speaker 3: if you will, yep, I mean, I think we can
- 5:36Speaker 3: we can talk about that.
- 5:37Speaker 2: We can talk about that people.
- 5:41Speaker 3: As individuals should really decide for themselves.
- 5:45Speaker 2: You know, what's best for me, what's best for my family?
- 5:49Speaker 3: You know, I know you're probably looking for some evergreen content,
- 5:52Speaker 3: but you're not going to get that out of me.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I will say this.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Warren Buffett, ninety four years old is still yes. I mean,
- 6:01Speaker 3: you know, he's got his young sixty two year old
- 6:04Speaker 3: replacement coming down.
- 6:05Speaker 2: From yeah right to take over the company.
- 6:07Speaker 3: But that being said, I'm inspired by him. I don't
- 6:11Speaker 3: always agree with him, but it's it's it's inspiring.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I think, yeah, no, someone, this is someone who.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Found something he loves and he's been doing it for
- 6:21Speaker 3: over half a century.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Well, I want to jump in there, Joel, because I
- 6:24Speaker 1: just recorded an episode, another episode of the Business Rentable podcast.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Actually earlier today. I was recording that and I was
- 6:30Speaker 1: talking with a woman in her early fifties. She started
- 6:33Speaker 1: her company. You guys can check it out. It's called
- 6:36Speaker 1: with Martika about the green economy. And you know she
- 6:40Speaker 1: has and this is you know, quite a while later,
- 6:42Speaker 1: number of years later, so she was really encouraging you.
- 6:44Speaker 1: So I agree. You know, I started Steward your Business.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I'm fifty one. I started Stewart your Business about almost
- 6:50Speaker 1: two and a half years ago, going on three years,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and and so you know, if you're feeling a calling
- 6:57Speaker 1: to do this now, this is I think to the
- 6:58Speaker 1: ambition point, Joel. You know, sometimes people get in for
- 7:02Speaker 1: the wrong reasons, and maybe that's why ambition is maybe negative,
- 7:05Speaker 1: right because both of the time people the ambition is
- 7:07Speaker 1: why I want to make a lot of money. And
- 7:09Speaker 1: I talk with any small business owner, if that's the
- 7:13Speaker 1: reason for getting into business, you're not gonna you're not
- 7:15Speaker 1: gonna make it whatever that you know, ambition is like
- 7:18Speaker 1: I just want to be especially or if you want
- 7:21Speaker 1: to be somebody else, not truly who you are. But
- 7:24Speaker 1: you're like, we I have this ambition and we can
- 7:26Speaker 1: be inspired, and I think, and that's not a bad thing,
- 7:28Speaker 1: but we have to find ourselves in our own journey.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Otherwise the ambition, you know, may be misguided. And so
- 7:37Speaker 1: you have to check I think, like you said, check it, Sol,
- 7:40Speaker 1: what is what is it? Ultimately, I think both you
- 7:43Speaker 1: and I have a strong desire to serve. Others come
- 7:47Speaker 1: from a place of abundance. And so if we're coming
- 7:50Speaker 1: from a place of abundance and we get to it's
- 7:52Speaker 1: not that we have to we get to serve. We
- 7:54Speaker 1: get to bring whatever we have, our talents, our gifts
- 7:58Speaker 1: and abilities. Then I agree with you. Ambition is a
- 8:00Speaker 1: positive thing because we're trying to be a blessing. We're
- 8:02Speaker 1: trying to look after others. That's the word of my company,
- 8:05Speaker 1: steward your business, steward and watching over. So that's never
- 8:10Speaker 1: I agree with you, Joel. It's never done. It's never like,
- 8:12Speaker 1: well I just checked the box. I mean, I hate
- 8:15Speaker 1: to say it. I hear people say that. I mean,
- 8:17Speaker 1: even you know you and I come from a background
- 8:20Speaker 1: in Christianity and background and people I will hear people say,
- 8:23Speaker 1: well I did my time, I did. What is there
- 8:27Speaker 1: an end? It's like do you sharing good news and sharing?
- 8:31Speaker 2: Excuse me?
- 8:32Speaker 1: Like, well, I just want to hold them in, Like
- 8:34Speaker 1: that's kind of what I hear about. You say I retire, Like,
- 8:36Speaker 1: well I did this and now I'm just gonna I'm
- 8:38Speaker 1: just going to consume and sit over here. That please
- 8:43Speaker 1: go ahead.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Well, first I'll start with the word identity just came
- 8:48Speaker 3: up in my mind, and I was thinking, you know,
- 8:50Speaker 3: it's like, you don't have to stop being who you are,
- 8:53Speaker 3: whoever that wonderful person is. You want to lean into that.
- 8:57Speaker 3: But the other piece is, you know, when when do
- 9:01Speaker 3: I stop serving? Do I stop serving at a certain age?
- 9:05Speaker 3: Do I keep working and serving until my last breath?
- 9:10Speaker 3: One of one of my dear friends and a client.
- 9:14Speaker 2: He's eighty two years old and he just lost his
- 9:18Speaker 2: wife to cancer just a few months ago.
- 9:21Speaker 3: And this this gentleman I meet with him periodically. He's
- 9:24Speaker 3: kind of lost. To be perfectly honest, I mean she
- 9:27Speaker 3: she was a all of his life for him.
- 9:29Speaker 2: She was his caregiver.
- 9:31Speaker 3: She was, you know, the biggest thing in his life.
- 9:34Speaker 3: And the thing I just keep telling him. I just
- 9:36Speaker 3: tell him over and over again, sir, you need to
- 9:40Speaker 3: ask God what's next for me? Why was I left behind?
- 9:45Speaker 3: My wife is a few years younger than me. Why
- 9:47Speaker 3: was she taken and not me? I wish I had
- 9:49Speaker 3: a been taken? And I just encourage him. I'm like,
- 9:52Speaker 3: that's that's the wrong place to be. Oh.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I mean, a Joel a fun story because I just
- 9:58Speaker 1: went to hear a low in southern California. There was
- 10:01Speaker 1: Retrocon this past weekend, which is kind of a fun
- 10:04Speaker 1: little convention.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Sounds fun, Yeah, it was fun.
- 10:06Speaker 3: It was.
- 10:07Speaker 1: But you know, I got to meet to two well
- 10:10Speaker 1: known actors, creators. I'll you know, i'll name drop here,
- 10:13Speaker 1: but John Ratzenberger, if you've known him, John Ratzenberger, voice actor.
- 10:17Speaker 1: It was in Cheers, Cliff, and I asked him. I
- 10:20Speaker 1: asked him, are you like, are you doing any of
- 10:22Speaker 1: the projects? Is of course, I'm as long as I
- 10:24Speaker 1: can work. I'm never going to retire. There's always something
- 10:27Speaker 1: to do, you know. It's just your point, Joel, Joel, Hey,
- 10:29Speaker 1: as long as God's allowed me to do it, I'm
- 10:31Speaker 1: going to do it. And I thought, you know, here's
- 10:33Speaker 1: a guy that has had tremendous success and tears. He's
- 10:38Speaker 1: you know, you've heard him on all the different movies
- 10:40Speaker 1: and voiceovers and all the Disney and Pixar stuff. Right,
- 10:44Speaker 1: he was earning an Empire strikes back for a Star
- 10:45Speaker 1: Wars geeks.
- 10:46Speaker 3: That's right, that's right in the in the first trilogy.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Yeah, so here here is a man that is saying, hey, no,
- 10:53Speaker 1: I'm still going to go. And I had a really
- 10:55Speaker 1: great conversation with him, and then the other conversation among
- 10:59Speaker 1: other folks. There was a couple of great people I met,
- 11:01Speaker 1: But the other one that I just thought was fascinating
- 11:03Speaker 1: was Sid Croft. If you know remember him from you know,
- 11:08Speaker 1: The Land of the Lost and all these shows from
- 11:10Speaker 1: the seven ninety five years old I got, I mean
- 11:13Speaker 1: him ninety five years just you know, he's out there,
- 11:17Speaker 1: you know, sitting out there meeting with fans, signing things,
- 11:20Speaker 1: just engaging folks. He does a weekly podcast that he
- 11:23Speaker 1: does on his Instagram. So there's a way of because
- 11:25Speaker 1: if you're creative or it doesn't matter if you're creative
- 11:27Speaker 1: not whatever that gift is for you. You know, I
- 11:31Speaker 1: think otherwise you're right, Joel, because I feel like we otherwise.
- 11:33Speaker 1: You see people kind of give up in life. It
- 11:35Speaker 1: doesn't really matter what age. I mean, the thing you
- 11:37Speaker 1: see people just disconnect, that's.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Right, and it's almost like they put their hand up. Yeah,
- 11:43Speaker 2: it's like I'm done. I'm like, you're done.
- 11:46Speaker 3: When I'm baking, there are things that are done, but
- 11:50Speaker 3: I mean I'll be baking.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Forever right right, And you've navigated so many different things
- 11:56Speaker 1: I want, And that's why I encourage folks that kind
- 11:58Speaker 1: of made me feel stuck or in a right you know,
- 12:01Speaker 1: don't feel like that's the end of the road, like
- 12:03Speaker 1: like you said, I'm done, there's an opportunity. I like
- 12:06Speaker 1: the word pivot. What is it that you're not not
- 12:10Speaker 1: in the friends pivot? If you've ever watched that pivot,
- 12:12Speaker 1: meaning you know we're adjusting and we don't have to
- 12:15Speaker 1: make a wide swing. It's not like hard, it's just
- 12:18Speaker 1: all it is a slight movement the.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Left or to the right, right, right, and and and
- 12:25Speaker 4: so that way, misplaced maybe ambition or misplaced identity could
- 12:29Speaker 4: be great corrected, refocused into a much more healthier version.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And and what I found for myself is this is
- 12:38Speaker 1: done usually at least for me, has been done in
- 12:41Speaker 1: community and connection with others. It's sharing and expressing where
- 12:44Speaker 1: I'm at, getting feedback, and there's a there's a course corection.
- 12:48Speaker 1: But if you're siloed or if you're alone or isolated,
- 12:51Speaker 1: really hard in my experience, not possible, but it's more
- 12:55Speaker 1: difficult to get clearer on your identity. Your purpose is
- 12:59Speaker 1: this and in alignment and so it's finding trusted advisors,
- 13:03Speaker 1: trying to trusted people that you can come into your life. Bill,
- 13:06Speaker 1: you and I have talked over the years sharing and
- 13:09Speaker 1: whether it's personal, professional or personal, you know, it crosses
- 13:14Speaker 1: over and so you know. So yeah, and I so
- 13:18Speaker 1: appreciate you. And I hope as people are watching this
- 13:21Speaker 1: and listening, if you don't have somebody in your life
- 13:24Speaker 1: like I and Joel have a relationship, for others that
- 13:26Speaker 1: you've heard of this podcast, by all means, it's worth
- 13:29Speaker 1: the investment to find those people that maybe are further along,
- 13:35Speaker 1: that are further along in their journey. I think it's
- 13:37Speaker 1: two things, Joe and I to love your thoughts with us.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Two things. It's finding people further along. When I say
- 13:41Speaker 1: to your right of you that you can lean into
- 13:42Speaker 1: whatever areas that is in your life. Is it business,
- 13:45Speaker 1: is it your relationship? Is that you're taking care of
- 13:46Speaker 1: yourself physically, spiritually, whatever that is. Because when we look
- 13:50Speaker 1: to the right and we look at that person, there's
- 13:52Speaker 1: always somebody further ahead. But also there is somebody to
- 13:55Speaker 1: the left of us that we are further ahead. Believe
- 13:57Speaker 1: it or not, we are further ahead than somebody else.
- 14:00Speaker 1: So who else can we believe lay of the hand
- 14:02Speaker 1: and to lift up, to share, to pour into So
- 14:05Speaker 1: I really think it's a two way that we are
- 14:07Speaker 1: both being mentored and finding others and mentoring others with
- 14:11Speaker 1: whatever you have. I love your thoughts on that, Jeel.
- 14:15Speaker 3: It's amazing how connected we are, David, because where you
- 14:20Speaker 3: went was exactly where I was headed to.
- 14:24Speaker 2: It's fascinating me.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I one of my coaches actually texted me about forty
- 14:29Speaker 3: five minutes before we went on today, and he and
- 14:32Speaker 3: I haven't talked in a couple of months or so
- 14:34Speaker 3: at least, and I'm like, why is he texting me today?
- 14:36Speaker 3: And I had to check my phone just now because
- 14:39Speaker 3: I wanted I want to get the words correct. And
- 14:41Speaker 3: his text was what's the next pursuit question Mark?
- 14:46Speaker 2: So he obviously knows that I'm up to something. And
- 14:51Speaker 2: the question you have to ask yourself is what are
- 14:53Speaker 2: you up to? What's the next thing that you're developing?
- 14:56Speaker 3: And I, believe it or not, there's two things I'm
- 14:59Speaker 3: developing right now, and I'm not going to get into
- 15:01Speaker 3: it on this program. But you have to have those
- 15:03Speaker 3: soundboards in your life. You have to have those people
- 15:05Speaker 3: in your life that number one see your blind spots.
- 15:08Speaker 3: That's why we get coaches in the first place, where
- 15:10Speaker 3: am I deficient? Where do I need to improve? But then,
- 15:15Speaker 3: like David said, you know those people who are a
- 15:17Speaker 3: little further along in whatever your.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Pursuit is, what's that thing.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Maybe it's health and fitness, maybe it's business, maybe it's
- 15:25Speaker 3: managing assets, maybe it's something else entirely and aligning with
- 15:31Speaker 3: those people, I would say the greatest blessing I have
- 15:37Speaker 3: on God's green Earth in this lifetime that I've had
- 15:39Speaker 3: is not just being.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Connected with people like you, David.
- 15:43Speaker 3: But I constantly find myself in the right circles surrounded
- 15:49Speaker 3: by people, and I'm like, why do.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I get this blessing? Why do I get to work
- 15:53Speaker 2: with this amazing person or this amazing team.
- 15:57Speaker 3: And it's common for me, you know. I I talk
- 16:01Speaker 3: with people on the other side that they're always looking
- 16:03Speaker 3: for the doom and gloom.
- 16:03Speaker 2: It's like, how can I get out of this situation?
- 16:06Speaker 2: I'm waiting for the next shoe to drop? Yeah, and
- 16:09Speaker 2: I just I just don't live my life that way.
- 16:12Speaker 3: You can't.
- 16:12Speaker 2: You can't have positive outcomes with a negative mind.
- 16:15Speaker 1: No. Well, to your point, Joel, I think that's why
- 16:18Speaker 1: you naturally, whether you call it the lat law of
- 16:21Speaker 1: attraction or whatever you want to call it, manifestation, whatever
- 16:25Speaker 1: the case might be. I do believe that there's a
- 16:27Speaker 1: point where you you bring up right light, you bring
- 16:30Speaker 1: that energy, like I said, coming from a place in
- 16:32Speaker 1: an abundance mindset, like there is more than enough. I
- 16:36Speaker 1: believe that's a natural attractant. The others are pulled to that,
- 16:41Speaker 1: and and so and then on the same token, you
- 16:44Speaker 1: know that that negative mindset or whatever also is attracts negative.
- 16:48Speaker 1: So think of polarity, right, So you have the you know,
- 16:51Speaker 1: the positive and the negative. But you know, so you're
- 16:54Speaker 1: gonna pull like mindedness, whatever that might be. So you're
- 16:57Speaker 1: choosing to put yourself in this place of hey can
- 17:01Speaker 1: do possibilities. You're seeing what I call the gain rather
- 17:05Speaker 1: than the gap, and others are drawn to that and
- 17:08Speaker 1: they want to be a part of that. I literally
- 17:10Speaker 1: was talking to this woman, like I said earlier, Marika,
- 17:12Speaker 1: who's in the sustainability space. We're talking about how do
- 17:16Speaker 1: we do that well? When you have a mindset like that,
- 17:18Speaker 1: it's just remarkable and it's so much different than a
- 17:22Speaker 1: lot of others. And so I think one way that
- 17:25Speaker 1: we've been successful, Joel as I think not just businessmen,
- 17:29Speaker 1: but you know, husbands and fathers. Is that we put
- 17:32Speaker 1: ourselves in that space of being with others that want
- 17:35Speaker 1: to rise, that want to step up, whatever that looks like.
- 17:40Speaker 1: And to me, the more of those, generally speaking, are better.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Whether it's your church, whether it's you know, Scouts, whether
- 17:48Speaker 1: it's uh, you know, a nonprofit group, whatever that is there,
- 17:52Speaker 1: they're a mission to lift up, their mission to help
- 17:56Speaker 1: rise and for most you know, that to me is important.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I am really counsel particularly my environmental space, Joel over
- 18:03Speaker 1: the years of young biologist. Like I said, look, get
- 18:06Speaker 1: involved with some kind of nonprofit. They all need help,
- 18:09Speaker 1: they all need My position is a great way to
- 18:12Speaker 1: connect and it's a great way to learn and give
- 18:14Speaker 1: back and in turn, you know you're you're gonna you'll
- 18:19Speaker 1: benefit as well. But just look it away and I think,
- 18:22Speaker 1: but a lot of people are waiting on the sidelines
- 18:26Speaker 1: and not getting engaged like you're doing, Joel. You know,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and just speak a little bit too, because I know
- 18:31Speaker 1: you've been involved with a number of nonprofits. I'd love
- 18:34Speaker 1: to just hear a little bit because what that has
- 18:36Speaker 1: been for you.
- 18:38Speaker 3: I would say that part of it gets to the
- 18:40Speaker 3: striver Thriver mm hmm.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Dichotomy, if you will.
- 18:46Speaker 3: There is the voice that's like, okay, what's what what's
- 18:49Speaker 3: in this for me?
- 18:50Speaker 1: Mm hm?
- 18:50Speaker 3: You know, is this going to be a win win?
- 18:52Speaker 3: And then there's the other side where it's like, you
- 18:54Speaker 3: know what, I have some value to provide and I'm
- 18:56Speaker 3: just gonna start providing it mm hmm and help where
- 18:59Speaker 3: I can't. And we've all been in networking groups and
- 19:04Speaker 3: we haven't gotten what we think we've put into the group,
- 19:08Speaker 3: or we've been in a situation where we've given and
- 19:10Speaker 3: given and given and we look back and we're like,
- 19:13Speaker 3: you know what. I I don't think that was a
- 19:14Speaker 3: valuable exchange or a fair exchange. But that being said,
- 19:18Speaker 3: I think you gave great counsel to the young people
- 19:22Speaker 3: coming up that you know you've got something to give.
- 19:26Speaker 3: I think about my own family. I mean, I've got
- 19:28Speaker 3: five kids that I get to coach in a way,
- 19:31Speaker 3: you know I and what am I modeling to them?
- 19:34Speaker 3: What am I modeling to my wife? And you know
- 19:38Speaker 3: that's just our little team here. When when I branch
- 19:42Speaker 3: out to place my place of employment, like like you said,
- 19:46Speaker 3: the you know places where I sit on boards right now,
- 19:48Speaker 3: I s I sit on one board and.
- 19:53Speaker 2: You know what, how am I showing up? Yeah? And
- 19:55Speaker 2: when I'm there, am I thinking about looking at the
- 19:57Speaker 2: clock and thinking.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Okay, you know I can't wait for this, you need
- 20:00Speaker 3: to be over Or am I thinking okay, how can
- 20:02Speaker 3: I add value?
- 20:04Speaker 1: H That's a great, great point?
- 20:06Speaker 3: How can I?
- 20:06Speaker 2: How can I? How can I be the leader that
- 20:09Speaker 2: they brought me a board to be?
- 20:11Speaker 5: Mm hmm.
- 20:12Speaker 3: You know I have this amazing opportunity to lead with
- 20:15Speaker 3: leaders within within that context. And how am I adding
- 20:20Speaker 3: value to these amazing people?
- 20:22Speaker 2: Right? Am I bringing something that they that they can use?
- 20:25Speaker 2: I love?
- 20:25Speaker 1: I love that? Joel? Like, how how am I bringing value?
- 20:30Speaker 1: One thing you mentioned earlier? You've been successfully married for
- 20:33Speaker 1: you know, twenty eight going on twenty eight years? Or
- 20:34Speaker 1: I was talking about da.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Can I just share one thing please? And am I
- 20:39Speaker 2: holding back?
- 20:40Speaker 1: Oh?
- 20:41Speaker 2: And where am I holding back?
- 20:43Speaker 1: Mm hmmm?
- 20:44Speaker 2: So I thought that was pretty important.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Oh? Absolutely, what am I bringing value? What am I
- 20:48Speaker 1: holding back? You know?
- 20:50Speaker 2: I think am I holding anything back?
- 20:52Speaker 1: Am I holding anything back? Yea? You know? And oftentimes
- 20:57Speaker 1: I think we all are to a certain degree, you know,
- 21:00Speaker 1: And so you know it's having good counsel and other
- 21:03Speaker 1: people in your life. I think one of the things
- 21:07Speaker 1: I talk about particularly in my Intelligent Human Leadership podcast,
- 21:10Speaker 1: but I think it's worthwhile speaking here is you know
- 21:13Speaker 1: you're talking. I've been coming up Mary almost twenty years,
- 21:16Speaker 1: twenty eight years. And I was talking to another entrepreneur
- 21:19Speaker 1: today about you know, he's building a lot, building a
- 21:23Speaker 1: big business. He's got a lot of things going on,
- 21:24Speaker 1: and he was talking to another entrepreneur and one of
- 21:26Speaker 1: the things he said to this entrepreneur and relate to me, was, Hey,
- 21:30Speaker 1: make sure you involve your spouse or girlfriend and whatever,
- 21:35Speaker 1: the love of your life in your ambition, in your visions.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Not that they have to, you know, they're not maybe
- 21:43Speaker 1: actively involved, meaning like in the day to day, but
- 21:46Speaker 1: make sure that they're aware because you can be so unfortunately,
- 21:49Speaker 1: like you said earlier, blind spots and particularly i'm speaking,
- 21:53Speaker 1: I'll just speak to men in particularly because I feel
- 21:55Speaker 1: like this is more of a man thing. But you know,
- 21:56Speaker 1: ladies may have this too, but you know, we kind
- 21:58Speaker 1: of get mission folks. And and again, the ambition is
- 22:01Speaker 1: not a bad thing, but not without understanding and seeing
- 22:06Speaker 1: the other ramifications can be And I believe you know,
- 22:10Speaker 1: like you said, Jo, you've been successful. You're making it,
- 22:12Speaker 1: being married twenty eight years, having five kids. Sometimes not always,
- 22:18Speaker 1: but sometimes we can be so outside of the world,
- 22:20Speaker 1: trying to create value, trying to give, and then we
- 22:23Speaker 1: have nothing left to bring back home, you know, and
- 22:28Speaker 1: so speak maybe to how you've been successful in navigating that.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Jele, Well, I haven't always.
- 22:36Speaker 6: Been I've always been successful, you know, sometimes, you know,
- 22:42Speaker 6: going through life and it's like running on fumes at times.
- 22:47Speaker 2: But it's it's.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Interesting because I would say that my counsel and my
- 22:53Speaker 3: my leadership, my personal leadership, whether it's a coach or
- 22:56Speaker 3: or the people that I'm operating with, has really just
- 23:01Speaker 3: gotten so much better over time, and the conversations are
- 23:05Speaker 3: so much high more high level.
- 23:07Speaker 2: And it's interesting because the groups.
- 23:09Speaker 3: That I'm involved with and the people that I'm getting
- 23:11Speaker 3: counsel from have all reminded me that the number one
- 23:15Speaker 3: member of.
- 23:15Speaker 2: My team is my wife. She's the number one member.
- 23:20Speaker 3: And if I'm doing team planning, business planning, any kind
- 23:23Speaker 3: of planning, she's number one, and she needs to be
- 23:27Speaker 3: in the mix. And it's interesting because that part of
- 23:31Speaker 3: my life has gotten better because whenever I start getting creative,
- 23:37Speaker 3: I always include her and it's like, Okay, is this
- 23:42Speaker 3: something that we need to be doing right now or
- 23:44Speaker 3: is this the direction we need to be taking this
- 23:46Speaker 3: area of our our life right now, because this is
- 23:51Speaker 3: what I'm thinking, and having that sounding board I think
- 23:55Speaker 3: is invaluable, and I think what happens with because unfortunately,
- 24:01Speaker 3: not every relationship goes the distance, and that goes for
- 24:06Speaker 3: marriages as well as businesses.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Yep.
- 24:10Speaker 3: And the real question is, okay, well, how can we
- 24:15Speaker 3: make this work.
- 24:16Speaker 2: You've heard the whole work life balance thing, which we
- 24:19Speaker 2: all know is a myth. All of your time goes
- 24:23Speaker 2: to the.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Things that are the most important, and at some point
- 24:26Speaker 3: something suffers so that you can learn, oh yeah, that
- 24:29Speaker 3: was pretty important.
- 24:32Speaker 2: At the end of the day, Well.
- 24:33Speaker 1: What do they say, Look at your calendar and where
- 24:37Speaker 1: you spend and that's pretty much indicator what your priorities are.
- 24:41Speaker 1: And so if those are not the way you really know,
- 24:45Speaker 1: what happens is something I call the drifts. Something of
- 24:47Speaker 1: these just start filling up and you're like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Hold on, this isn't where I want. I like the
- 24:51Speaker 1: analogy of like flying a plane when you're off like
- 24:54Speaker 1: one degree and before you know you're gonna be in
- 24:56Speaker 1: a completely different location. So it's like doing a regular
- 24:59Speaker 1: audit and it looks at those things is not a
- 25:01Speaker 1: bad thing and reassessing. In fact, we used to call
- 25:04Speaker 1: it one of the companies, we call it meeting creep,
- 25:06Speaker 1: Like these meetings would keep popping in and a lot,
- 25:09Speaker 1: and then we would say, like then we go the
- 25:11Speaker 1: other way. We're like no meetings and we're like, okay,
- 25:13Speaker 1: well that doesn't work either, right, So it's like right,
- 25:19Speaker 1: and you know, and whether it's your wife or team members,
- 25:22Speaker 1: sometimes we'll get feedback right like I'm not sure about this.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I have some different reservations and we're like, no, we're
- 25:28Speaker 1: going to go. I've got the mission. This is going
- 25:30Speaker 1: to happen.
- 25:30Speaker 4: And we.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Discount whether it's like our spouse or other team members,
- 25:37Speaker 1: to our own peril. I agree, we have an ego
- 25:40Speaker 1: where just we have you know, we're blinded. Quite honestly,
- 25:46Speaker 1: I call us we're lying to ourselves. We're not living
- 25:48Speaker 1: in truth. We're just kind of believing in you know,
- 25:50Speaker 1: there's something that's further out there that really isn't accurate.
- 25:54Speaker 1: And if we don't have a foundation and understanding and
- 25:57Speaker 1: get back to the baseline benchmark, the truth of what
- 26:01Speaker 1: it is. Everything else is kind of built on a
- 26:03Speaker 1: house of cards. So I agree, right, I mean, so,
- 26:07Speaker 1: I mean, but it is hard at times because it
- 26:09Speaker 1: requires us to be humble. It acquires us to kind
- 26:11Speaker 1: of put aside our you know, even though the ambition
- 26:14Speaker 1: might be good, the way we're going to go about
- 26:16Speaker 1: and how we're gonna get there needs to be adjusted.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And it's like, okay, are you coachable or teachable? And
- 26:21Speaker 1: I think that's really important too.
- 26:23Speaker 3: Mm hmm, Yeah, I agree on it's and humility is
- 26:29Speaker 3: its own meditation, if you will, no matter where you're
- 26:33Speaker 3: at in your day, no matter where you're at in
- 26:35Speaker 3: your week, or your month or your quarter.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Rights business, we're talking about how are we doing? We're
- 26:41Speaker 2: Q two, it's we're halfway through.
- 26:43Speaker 1: When we're recording this, but.
- 26:46Speaker 3: It's it's it's it's fascinating to me, David, that.
- 26:52Speaker 2: There's nothing new under the sun. That it really is it.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I've I've worked.
- 26:56Speaker 3: In so many businesses, in so many institutions, and there
- 27:00Speaker 3: are those things that have become obsolete and you were
- 27:04Speaker 3: talking about, you know, the person you're working with or
- 27:06Speaker 3: interview that's in sustainability. You know, I work with with
- 27:11Speaker 3: the gentleman who's on the smart city side, and and
- 27:14Speaker 3: you know, future tech and things like that.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And I think, you know, we're living in a time
- 27:20Speaker 2: when certain things are going to become obsolete. And how
- 27:24Speaker 2: many leaders, how many leaders are holding.
- 27:30Speaker 5: On to old systems, in old ways and old mindsets
- 27:34Speaker 5: and old tech because they think that that it's it's
- 27:39Speaker 5: a need or they've never even asked the question why
- 27:41Speaker 5: are we.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Still doing this right? Why why are we still using
- 27:45Speaker 2: this right?
- 27:47Speaker 1: Well, I think I think to your point, well, on
- 27:50Speaker 1: that is, there's a you know, we we like to stay.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I think as a human being, as a change and
- 27:57Speaker 1: our bally, our brains work. We don't like change just
- 28:01Speaker 1: and it seems like change for change's sake, right, But
- 28:03Speaker 1: it's not that. But even if it's not good, even
- 28:06Speaker 1: if it isn't good, but it's known, right, it's known
- 28:10Speaker 1: so energetically, I don't have to really think about it
- 28:13Speaker 1: when we're when we have what they call disruptors, right,
- 28:15Speaker 1: people I call I call the pioneer voice. They stick
- 28:19Speaker 1: out in a good in a good way, but also
- 28:21Speaker 1: to the world. Sometimes it's like, why are you messing
- 28:23Speaker 1: with things? Why are you going around? Because they see
- 28:26Speaker 1: or I call them the pioneers or creators, particularly in
- 28:29Speaker 1: the five Voices framework, those folks are the ones that
- 28:31Speaker 1: see possibilities now they need people to help implement them.
- 28:34Speaker 1: They're not implementers. They need people to come alongside to
- 28:36Speaker 1: help realize the dream and the vision. I like to
- 28:39Speaker 1: use the story of Walt Disney and Roy Disney. Walt
- 28:41Speaker 1: Disney is this great imagineer coming all these things with
- 28:44Speaker 1: Roy is like, I'm actually going to follow and make
- 28:46Speaker 1: sure this it's done. We need both, It's not, it's
- 28:49Speaker 1: not all. And so what I think is there's resistance
- 28:53Speaker 1: on if you're not emotionally aware whatever you want to
- 28:57Speaker 1: call the emotional IQ whatnot. But if you're not aware
- 29:00Speaker 1: of this and you can become frustrated, you can become
- 29:03Speaker 1: walled off. Doesn't help. Everyone breaks down in the conversations.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Everyone goes to their corners and they were like, we
- 29:09Speaker 1: all lose. That's true, right, we all lose. So it's like, Okay,
- 29:14Speaker 1: that's not the way, that's not the productive way to
- 29:17Speaker 1: do it. But I mean, so understanding and appreciating each other.
- 29:21Speaker 1: And I think that's what you do, Jeel, and a
- 29:23Speaker 1: lot of your efforts and so many things. And I
- 29:25Speaker 1: love I'm gonna tap onto your musical background for a minute,
- 29:28Speaker 1: because you you're an amazing musician. But you know it
- 29:33Speaker 1: is it's wonderful to hear a single guitar player go.
- 29:35Speaker 1: But when you bring an ensemble together and they're all
- 29:38Speaker 1: playing their parts right, and they know where to come
- 29:41Speaker 1: in and where to come out, where to raise the volume,
- 29:44Speaker 1: where to decrease the volume. What what a different experience?
- 29:47Speaker 1: That is, right?
- 29:47Speaker 2: It's true, that's true. Now you you played, you played
- 29:51Speaker 2: an instrument, played.
- 29:55Speaker 1: No, you played a flu flute, troumone played a few
- 30:00Speaker 1: different things over there. I played a little guitar piano.
- 30:03Speaker 1: But but to the to the point, I feel like, yo,
- 30:09Speaker 1: I like that analogy, and I feel like that's why
- 30:11Speaker 1: you again, why you work well with folks, because you
- 30:13Speaker 1: understand that every part has it is important, right.
- 30:17Speaker 3: And when when you figure out what your part is,
- 30:20Speaker 3: either because you've chosen it or somebody chose it for you, you
- 30:24Speaker 3: play your heart out, you.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Work hard on it.
- 30:27Speaker 3: You know, there's there's a project that I'm working on
- 30:29Speaker 3: right now, which it's it's going to be really fun
- 30:33Speaker 3: when when it goes public.
- 30:35Speaker 2: But but I have a lot of work that I have.
- 30:37Speaker 3: To do before, and I'll continue to have work to do.
- 30:42Speaker 3: But I think I think that gets to integrity, doesn't it.
- 30:45Speaker 3: It's it's like, Okay, well you've chosen to do this,
- 30:48Speaker 3: now you gotta are you going to choose to do.
- 30:50Speaker 2: The best that you can do? Mm hm, you know,
- 30:52Speaker 2: or you're just going to kind of do it?
- 30:54Speaker 1: You know, you say when you say integrity, jewel I,
- 30:56Speaker 1: I want to follow up with that with another word
- 30:58Speaker 1: to you, you know, with ambition is commitment. What's your commitment?
- 31:03Speaker 1: Because you know and I've been both been married for
- 31:06Speaker 1: quite a long time, so we made a commitment early on.
- 31:10Speaker 1: I don't think commitments hard early on. It's easy to
- 31:12Speaker 1: commit early it is.
- 31:13Speaker 2: It is when you're young and excited.
- 31:15Speaker 1: And or whatever. The new thing is, right, I think, Hey,
- 31:19Speaker 1: this is a new thing.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Objects I'm going to go to this.
- 31:23Speaker 1: And who talks about this. There's a few different people
- 31:25Speaker 1: that talk about this, O Mosi, Gary V others. People
- 31:29Speaker 1: that the entrepreneur moves to the new thing, they didn't
- 31:34Speaker 1: stay committed to what they actually said they were going
- 31:36Speaker 1: to do, and they're frustrated with why am I not winning?
- 31:39Speaker 1: Why am I not getting there? And your point of
- 31:42Speaker 1: an entire and integrity there.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Can I can I share something from another coach by
- 31:47Speaker 3: the way, yes, another coaches, but that that's that's why
- 31:50Speaker 3: I haven't met.
- 31:50Speaker 2: You have coaches.
- 31:52Speaker 3: One of my coaches she told me this years ago,
- 31:56Speaker 3: and basically she said that if something doesn't serve you anymore,
- 32:02Speaker 3: whether it's personally or your family or business, you still
- 32:07Speaker 3: have to finish it, even if that means cutting it out.
- 32:10Speaker 2: That's part of part of finishing it as well. You know,
- 32:14Speaker 2: maybe you've got a strategic.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Partnership that's not working for you anymore, you have a
- 32:18Speaker 3: toxic relationship in the market. You cutting that out is
- 32:23Speaker 3: getting it done, fetching the job. You shouldn't leave all
- 32:27Speaker 3: these unfinished jobs out there.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Yes, yes, you know.
- 32:31Speaker 3: And it's like, that's why I am a firm believer
- 32:34Speaker 3: in taking an inventory, whether it's quarterly or even monthly
- 32:38Speaker 3: or weekly, if you need to to to look at
- 32:41Speaker 3: your life, your business life, your personal life and analyze
- 32:46Speaker 3: it and say, okay, what needs to be cut?
- 32:48Speaker 2: Does anything need to be cut? What needs to be added.
- 32:53Speaker 3: And I think that's that's super valuable to do, and
- 32:57Speaker 3: I think some people forget that piece.
- 33:00Speaker 1: So funny you mentioned that, Joel, I just spent six
- 33:02Speaker 1: hours last week with well fourteen other men going through
- 33:07Speaker 1: our inventory. Interesting, working through it, you know, getting clear
- 33:12Speaker 1: on it. What you know. That's one of the things
- 33:14Speaker 1: I'm training with wake Up Warrior tools and other things,
- 33:17Speaker 1: is like how to be clear on that because the
- 33:20Speaker 1: drift happens. It's not if I use I use multiple tools.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I've got my full focused planner in here too, right,
- 33:25Speaker 1: you're a quarterly planner that I'm constantly, like, you know,
- 33:30Speaker 1: looking at these things. Like you said, I like to say, Jel,
- 33:35Speaker 1: what do I need to start doing? What I need
- 33:36Speaker 1: to stop doing, what do I need to sustain doing?
- 33:39Speaker 1: But if you don't make a decision, I think that
- 33:42Speaker 1: that what's the amount that it takes on your brain
- 33:45Speaker 1: because you're you're holding space for that somewhere and it's
- 33:48Speaker 1: not revolution right.
- 33:49Speaker 2: That's it. That's that's the piece.
- 33:52Speaker 3: It's there's some element of whatever is unfinished that's in
- 33:56Speaker 3: your mind and and it's stealing the energy and the focus.
- 34:00Speaker 2: You need for whatever you really need to be doing.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:04Speaker 3: You know, at the end of the day, I talk
- 34:07Speaker 3: about A A files, B files and C files and
- 34:10Speaker 3: C files you can just throw away and the B
- 34:13Speaker 3: files might you know, because I'm super creative, that might
- 34:16Speaker 3: be something that I massage you over time.
- 34:17Speaker 2: But I've got to focus on the A files. They're
- 34:20Speaker 2: the ones that produce the most capital. Reason.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Yeah whatever that Yeah, that.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Positive energy for myself and others.
- 34:26Speaker 1: No, that's that's true. There's a there's a More Sharing
- 34:30Speaker 1: Ideas or one book I really liked years ago by
- 34:32Speaker 1: David Allen called Getting Things Done g t D for short.
- 34:35Speaker 1: But what what he calls it is like, yeah, those
- 34:37Speaker 1: things that you need to get done, the things you
- 34:39Speaker 1: can delegate, and he calls it whatever your C file
- 34:41Speaker 1: or B file but someday maybe file. Like so if
- 34:44Speaker 1: you want to hold on up for some reason, okay,
- 34:46Speaker 1: just put it in that someday maybe.
- 34:47Speaker 2: But you're really here, you know, scratching away your time.
- 34:51Speaker 1: So you got to go through that inventory, like you said,
- 34:54Speaker 1: and determined. You know what. Nope, I can toss that out,
- 34:57Speaker 1: you know, And I think the clearer and the more
- 34:59Speaker 1: simple we can do it, the better, and that also
- 35:01Speaker 1: helps us stay Like you said earlier. I like the
- 35:04Speaker 1: word integrity tied to commitment. Oftentimes we're out of integrity.
- 35:08Speaker 1: We're not we said we were going to do something
- 35:10Speaker 1: that we're committed to you, but we're not doing it.
- 35:13Speaker 1: And unfortunately, you know where the we lie to ourselves
- 35:19Speaker 1: more about these lives of not uh co mission but
- 35:23Speaker 1: oh mission, we're not. We're not being truthful for with
- 35:25Speaker 1: ourselves and we're kind of like making excuses and so
- 35:27Speaker 1: when you do that, it perpetuates itself and then that
- 35:31Speaker 1: that gets you off target. That definitely does where you
- 35:35Speaker 1: want to go, right.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Yep, it does, it does, and you totally lack peace
- 35:40Speaker 2: at that point. Yes, you know, it's it's the it's
- 35:42Speaker 2: the war within your mind. Yes, you're losing that. You
- 35:46Speaker 2: don't have freedom, you don't have peace.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, We've covered a lot here and I know
- 35:54Speaker 1: we could go on and on joelting.
- 35:58Speaker 2: On to talk about anyway, know right, well.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm bitious, but really I think hearing from two
- 36:04Speaker 1: men that are going through and like you said in
- 36:07Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, trying to take care of living for
- 36:11Speaker 1: those of you that not in California, different world, but
- 36:13Speaker 1: California in southern California. We've had crazy weather events, We've
- 36:17Speaker 1: had crazy you know, political things, you know, fres fires, homelessness,
- 36:24Speaker 1: you know, we've just had a lot. And so how
- 36:28Speaker 1: do we show up consistently with integrity, living out like
- 36:34Speaker 1: I like, in a positive ambition to serve and lift
- 36:37Speaker 1: up others. I hope as you're listening to this podcast
- 36:41Speaker 1: you're being encouraged. I'm gonna actually link Joel's contact information

- 37:14Speaker 1: this conversation and Joel, I'm definitely gonna have to come

- 37:19Speaker 1: a round table. We haven't had actually a good round
- 37:21Speaker 1: table with a number of the other guests, but would
- 37:23Speaker 1: love to have you come back and have a further
- 37:26Speaker 1: conversation with you that as we're on a few key
- 37:30Speaker 1: words that you know, my ambition to integrity, committment, entity,
- 37:36Speaker 1: What is it?
- 37:36Speaker 7: What is it that you want to listener? That's technicism
- 37:39Speaker 7: of your business owner. You're leading the team, he's just
- 37:43Speaker 7: you and you're just making a way through this podcast.
- 37:48Speaker 1: What is Senator David and Joel today? But what would
- 37:51Speaker 1: you what would you leave a party of words or
- 37:53Speaker 1: thoughts to consider your Joel.
- 37:56Speaker 2: Ask yourself the question, am I living life on my turn?
- 38:01Speaker 2: Am I living life on my terms? And live life
- 38:06Speaker 2: on your terms?
- 38:07Speaker 1: And note, yeah, what are your terms? Determine those? We're
- 38:10Speaker 1: gonna great, great question, great comments, great conversations. We're gonna
- 38:15Speaker 1: actually please go ahead and leave any comments feedback for us.
