- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Okay, well let's go ahead and talk about my guest here.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Uh the person I know I moved to Fallspring.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Mike McCoy.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Mike was born in Ballspring.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: And graduated from the University of CLA.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: The others are longer, right?
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Mike and I met Mike uh we were new club members of uh Lake Club of Long Springs.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: We're getting involved in politics because we uh politics temperature in California Lake County.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: I was the vice chair of the Lake County for about four hours, and that's just one thing that I did uh getting on we were uh just a time ago.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: So one thing I noticed at the dinner was that uh this guy Mike was around my age when he says just a little bit younger and not quite as mature, but that was all right.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: He still seemed to meet.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: And later on I found out that he was quite like twenty-five.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Anyway, uh I'd like to go ahead and uh Mike, how are you doing?
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: I'm doing good.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's one of the things I want to ask.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: I I got a couple of questions so the people here uh know kind of who you are and what you were and things like that.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: Mike, have you ever been associated with the Communist Party of America?
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Have you ever been a socialist democrat?
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: Negative.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Were you ever part of the Charles Wilson family?
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: Negative.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay, great.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: So go ahead, Mike.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: Explain to the people here why you're a friend of mine.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: And the second time I ran we won.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And so uh I spent four years on city council in the early two thousand.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And uh you and I at least went into it.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Uh we worked together and uh I think we made a difference.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: I think we made a difference.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: You know, one of the things that really impressed me about you was the the fact that uh on city council we've always had a saying.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: And that saying made so much sense to me.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: Uh and it's kind of what both the Republican Party and politics kind of fell away from.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: You always said if you can measure it, you should act.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Kind of explain that.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Okay, well actually, uh Barry Massandy helped me with my formulating my campaign.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: And Barry said to me at one time meeting in my office, you know what you need like a five-point plan.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: What are the five things we're gonna do for the wing?
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: And one of the first ones that came out was what you can measure, you can manage.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: And uh I used that often on council.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: It was a campaign work at first, but I used it on council because we were trying to pass things and w there was like no way to measure it.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: And so I and I asked how you can manage it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: And so that was all sort of like part of my looking from an academy standpoint.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Everybody on council had different backgrounds.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: But even from the accounting standpoint, I was able to bring that and also I have a master of business administration to like to go with my economics.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: So I had a lot of expertise in management and economics.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: So I think I brought a lot into the hands now.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: And now Barry, wasn't Barry part of his many bonus campaigns when he got elected?
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Barry was all over the place because they he and his brother Brian had a standing consultant.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: So they were a political consulting fellow.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: And uh and Bar Barry was a great guy.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: I mean he was like super gladhand, you know, a lot of white people.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And he was shaking hands and looking an eye and and uh I really missed it.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he also did a lot with Marioner too, which he was you know.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: He he supported they supported pretty much every uh uh Republican in the whole Cotella Valley and that's why this area called where he was in Cotella Valley.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: And uh also, so he he he worked with uh he worked with Mary Bono, he worked with Jim Batten, he worked with a lot of people.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Now, um you were saying that the uh because it was mostly a Democrat City Council, so they were trying to pass a lot of things that you couldn't measure, is that correct?
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and also one of the things that that I kind of hard I I was looking I was when you asked me these questions yesterday when we were talking about the show, I I I thought about it.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: And one of the things that I was probably most intelligent in was that um I I just actually existing zoning law, I was a big defender of property rights.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: And some of the people on council were very against development and all the things.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: They're socialists.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: And and I understand that you know you want to limit vote, but people, investors, construction contractors bought property based on the zoning rules law and how the property was zoned.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: And then they would bring a project that fit all of the zoning requirements, and the council would want to vote against the project because they didn't like it.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: And uh I so I wouldn't stand up and say no, we have to vote for the project that fits all of the parameters, it's gone through the architectural advisory committee, it's gone through the planning committee, it's presented to us now, they find tune it, and there's a zoning, and you can't vote no more unless you want to change the zoning and let everybody know what's up.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: So I was a big defender of policy rights.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: Let me ask you, those people, those entities who were bringing these projects in, weren't they mostly Republicans and not Democrats?
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Uh I don't know.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: They I I believe they some of the bigger ones were.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: I I I believe I don't really want to name names.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: No, we don't have to name names, we just have to say, yeah, they were Republicans, not Democrats.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: And those are but I would well there the I would look at we would look at these projects, we even look at it.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Now back then things were divided in Palm Springs.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: It was sort of a precursor for what we're what we see in the nation now.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Everybody goes, Why is everything so divided?
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: You know, like why can't Democrats support the bombing of uh of Iran to take out the Khomeini?
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Uh so but we w it it sort of started in Palm Springs.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: You got it.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: I again, and that's one of my things that the theme I wanted to talk about today is everything bad that came from California and the Democrat Party and the cheating and the money and everything in the and the uh theft, it all came from California and moved across the nation.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: And it's one of the most corrupt political uh democratic states in the Union.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: And uh back then in Palm Springs it was a microcosm because it was different.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: Because what the Democrats saw were well all these people who were these developers coming in to do these projects, because you look down valley, it's all big golf courses, big things like that.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Republicans play golf, Democrats don't.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: And uh they didn't want the Republicans to, you know, legally uh go ahead and create wealth to spend on political campaigns to keep Republicans in office.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: And so remember Shadow remember Shadow Rock and Palm Hill?
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: It's a Luciff.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: And everyone wanted to protect the hillsides and the alluvial fan, but those were zones for the development.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: And so when people as a matter of fact, there was a measure B on the ballot, remember that?
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: And uh B and C and I remember uh Chris Mill, the tele councilman, said if you're confused about B and C, C is bad, C is cool.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: So they so they they put measures on the ballot to to stop these developments that were that fit the zoning.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: And there there's two propositions I believe were the biggest impact on California, and one of them on the impact of the United States.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: One of that was the biggest impact on California, we'll talk about later, but I'll mention it now, is Howard Jarvis Prop 13.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: And that had a huge impact.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: And we'll talk about that in the next segment.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: And the other one was Prop 187.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: And you remember Prop 187, don't you, Mike?
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Uh I remember the number, but I can't remember the details.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: Prop 187 was a vote a vote by Californians to make it illegal for illegal aliens to get schooling, hospital, any type of of welfare from the California government.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: And it passed overwhelmingly, and it passed overwhelmingly in the Latino community.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: But of course, the Democrats, they couldn't live with that because they needed someplace to go ahead and get funds for their campaigns and things like that in control.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: So they went ahead and took it to court, and the court made it somehow illegal.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean yeah, I I forgot all about that.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: And so that's just uh something that is and then that went on to become federal law and on and on, and you know they they show up to uh emergency room and you know, you have to go ahead.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: Well, Mike, we're gonna take a break.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Oh no, go ahead.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: We're gonna take a break.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: So go ahead and just kind of keep that uh uh thought in your mind, and we'll get back to it uh after the commercial break.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: So we'll be back in a moment.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: What are your plans for celebrating America's my quintessentennial?
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Well, I've got a great idea for you.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Join the Pontiac County Republican women and help them celebrate America's 250th birthday.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: As a member of the Pontial County Republican women, you can stay informed through political education and activity by attending monthly meetings with timely topics presented by outstanding speakers, meet your elected officials in person, have camaraderie with like-minded Republicans, and best of all, meet new friends and have fun.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: The Pontialk County Republican Women's Club meets on the second Monday of the month at Silver Queen.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: In fact, his nickname is Senator McCowbell.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Mike, you want to go ahead and explain that?
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about uh Senator McCowbell.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: Oh uh I used to whenever that more cowbell skit came out on Saturday Night Live uh with Will Farrell and uh I so a friend of mine had a band and he played in it, and I would yell at him from the from the gallery, more cowbell, more cowbell, and so one day we were actually doing they were playing between innings at the Palm Springs Power Game at the stadium here in Palm Springs and a baseball game, and he goes, Come over here, and he gave me a cowbell and a drumstick, he goes, You're on.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: So for like before until co until COVID hit, for like five years, I I played the Red Barn probably a hundred times.
- 16:43SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: So COVID COVID killed the cowbell player.
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: Oh.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: At least it killed it killed the career anyway.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: I'm still alive, but uh that was the end of my cowbell career.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: And the other thing is uh, you know, Mike we had a nickname for him when we were trying to get him to run for mayor of Palm Springs.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Eminem, Mike McCullough, plain, not nutty, as far as talking about the Eminem candy, because California is f just full of fruits and nuts, and we wanted to make sure everybody knew that he was plain, level-headed, can handle the job of being mayor of Palm Springs.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: And that you just reminded me of what I wanted to talk about, and that was um when Ronald Reagan was governor of California, people had bumper stickers.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: There was the outline of California on it that said Reagan country.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Boy, has that changed.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, geez.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, big time it changed, big time.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Now it's like Greece Paul Newsome country.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: I hope your listeners will understand that this this that whatever they do, if you have Democrat listeners, yeah, don't vote for Newsom when he runs for president.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: I don't think there's you want to vote for any Democrat when they run for president.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: I know, but uh you know this guy, oh boy, Has McCrock would be better than him.
- 18:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: I wanted to thank, you know, one of the things about Trump, I never really liked his style.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: If you remember, you know, I was pretty conservative, you know, coming uh my accounting is background, we is accounting is my background, so you are what you eat.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: So but and so I never liked Trump's style, you know, but we gotta give him some credit for a couple things.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: And number one, I would say, is we never had a Hillary Clinton as president, and we and we didn't have a Kamala Harris as president.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: And Kim Wolf as a vice president.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Camp on cam is out now, his career's over.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: So it it it for anybody who doesn't like Trump, uh I have to say uh th thank thank him for that.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let me let me tell you, back here in uh Mississippi, um it's MAGA country.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: People back here really, really like Donald Trump.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Uh our our government out here, because it was so democratic for so long, all the Democrats re-registered as a Republican.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: So there's still a lot of Democrat thinking in the Republican Party here in Mississippi, which we're trying to change, and part of that change is to get the listeners to realize that a lot of those are Republicans are not really true MAGA conservative Republicans.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: And uh Mike, go ahead and tell me, why are you still in California?
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: Well, I was born here and I went to school here, and I've lived here my whole life, and I'm uh you know, remember the song uh Tom Petty, Don't Back Down?
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna surrender.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: This is this is uh this is California is my state, and just because all these lunatics now are running it, I my hope is that that will turn. 'Cause it seems like normally there's a cycle.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: I mean we had Pete Wilson, Dick Majian, we Arnold who is kind of a you know, a rhino.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but so Arnold is better than any Democrat we've had since.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but so it and that's not in the ancient past, that's relatively recent.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: So perhaps someone like Chabianco or Hilde can get in and take over the governorship, and then that might give us a chance to get back on the right path.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: But if the the California right now has got a huge deficit.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: If there was a surplus when uh when Newsom took over, and uh I got some numbers for you.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Um okay, so there was a surplus of seven billion when he took office, Newsom.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: And in in 2020, it went down to five, it went down to five, then it went down to three point five, then it went to three.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: The projected deficit for the 2025-26 fiscal year, as the year goes from July 1st to June 30th, is a negative 18 billion dollars.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Hey, and what do you think projected for 27-28, a negative thirty-five billion dollars?
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Does that have to look at California can't rent money like the Fed?
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: So they're gonna raise taxes.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: They're gonna raise your taxes, Mike.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: Then then we're gonna get uh we're gonna get m more flight of businesses out of California.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, in fact, maybe you'll move out at that time.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Uh well my my my child bride is still working and she has tied to her to business here, so that that's an anchor to keep me here.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: And also, I like my house.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: I like living in Palm Springs.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: I don't want to move.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but you know, one of the things you you're lucky because what year did you buy your home?
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: And this is getting back to prop thirteen, Howard Jarvis.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: I bought my house in nineteen ninety one and it was a pro it was uh basically it was a hundred and fifty thousand bucks.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: And my uh looked at my property tax statement because uh we're doing our taxes so I had to get that out um my net value is two hundred and fifty thousand so what when Howard Jarvis came in and he's a hero of mine uh he passed proper proposition thirteen which re which allowed the basis to step up incrementally a f a for a small amount a year so that's why my best value is now 250 25000 right and and so that's cap so it can't they can't go in and say let's use the current value of my house and right now my annual tax is about three thousand bucks for property taxes and that's about a little over one percent of the assessed value.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: So our property tax rate is one point two percent.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: But if not for Howard Garvin that three thousand bucks a year would be probably about nine thousand dollars.
- 23:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: They keep trying to chip away at it and some proposition on the next ballot to stop them from trying to carve away at Prop thirteen.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: But uh you know I think I thank God for Howard Jarvis could you know it would what a difference.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: Oh gosh yes.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: It would be three times higher.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah well you gotta understand Mike uh the house that Elise and I live in right now here in Pontiac um it's thirty six hundred square feet and uh we pay three hundred dollars a year in property tax.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: So your house is like twice the size of mine we pay three hundred a year in property tax you pay three hundred and that so you're paying ten percent of what I pay.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah yeah that's that's one of the reasons I love Mississippi.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: You know again uh you know people look at me and they looked at Elise and I you moved from where I said Palm Springs and they said why would you move from Palm Springs here to Pontiac Mississippi and I go I love Pontiac Mississippi I love the people I love the politics I love the lifestyle I enjoy the hot weather you know it's humid here where in Palm Springs it was 117 but very dry I mean there's nothing about Pontiac I don't love.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Well in Palm Springs when I when I moved when we our family moved here I actually wasn't born in Ponti was born in Riverside California.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: Right but I it was first grade on I was in Palm Springs and I I it was called the playground of the stars well it's really not that now I used to see I I used to play golf and uh Bob Hope would be playing golf I I used to see Bob Hope all the time at O'Donnell golf club.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: Right there you go we used to see we used to see stars.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: Red Skelton was was here all the time he was very public uh he he interacted with people in those days uh you'd see uh like uh Dean Martin driving down uh Bob Daniel Drive yeah when I played golf it was huge yeah when I played golf as a junior in tournaments you know Bing Crosby would be there watching his son play and uh in fact I played a couple of holes with Joe DiMaggio over in half moon bay when I lived in the Bay Area because his cart broke down and so we were like you know right behind him and so when we caught up to him says hey come on join us so we played three holes together.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: It was great.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah so playing golf we get opportunity to go ahead and d do things like that.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: I mean especially down in Palm Springs you know Fred Williamson was another good uh uh golfer who you know played a lot with uh uh a lot of us I played with I played uh I played uh golf at Canyon Country Club with uh Fred the hammer Williamson there you go what a great guy he is he's great he was great I know he's the kind of guy like he smiles at you and you feel like he he he's been your friend for life.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh more importantly he makes you feel like you're his friend.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah we uh I knew his I knew his wife uh Linda Williamson she was a contractor and I met her on a contractor job and we kind of hit it off she is a Republican and so Elise met her and they got to become really good friends and and uh it was just a a a good we had a great time in Palm Springs.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: I enjoyed Palm Springs it was just the accumulation of living in California for over sixty years and my problem was I was born under a wandering star.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: You know I'm not gonna try to sing anymore but you know paint your wagon you know with uh clean I don't have a dump button on my phone I know but anyway we moved around California by the time when I was a kid we lived in four different homes in the in the city of Millbrae I've just always constantly moved and moved and moved so my Prop 13 Howard Jarvis would go up up every time you know you bought a new house at a higher level it would readjust to one percent of the higher level so it wasn't like yours where you bought a house and you stayed there for a long time and it was just uh getting to be too much in California for us and any s wanted to come back here to Ole Miss where she went to college and uh that has well good football game.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah that's been a really uh a great experience for us is coming back here to Ole Miss in their sports uh and uh it it'll be it'll be a great year next year without Lane Kiffin uh at Ole Miss because people will see that uh and LSU will find out that it's not too much about Lane Kiffin about the organization around 'em.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah my Bruins were in ruins and uh the UC regents that control the University of California system uh they just they don't really care about sports and and I'm so fed up with it I think that it's an embarrassment.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: I I I I I would propose for them to just drop the football program completely if they're not gonna put a competitive team out there.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: It's embarrassing.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Right, exactly where back in the day USC, UCLA uh you know they were some tough teams down there in the Pac ten and the Pac twelve and the Pac 8 back in the day I mean uh I was always a Stanford fan but uh yeah the University of Second Choice has still got a good football program.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah exactly that's a private school yeah so they they know how to do it.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Uh so that's the regions don't the regions don't care about the sports and uh also the uh I gotta say that there is a I I don't really like to say D E I.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: I I prefer to switch the letters around to D I E.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Well we're gonna take another short break coming up here Mike and we'll get back to you and we'll have another uh 15 minute little episode between you and I but right now we're gonna go to commercial.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: What are your plans for celebrating America's semi quintessor we got it poker as long as we can make it to the show another American man Well Mike how'd you like that song selection?
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Wow you really did your show prep that's great and when I was uh playing singing with the ghost of Kelso uh that I not only was I playing Cowbell but we used to do four hour gigs at at the Red Barn and the singer came up to me one time and goes can you sing any of our songs?
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Because my he was like drinking warm tea you know his voice would he would lose his voice at the end of the night.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: And I looked at this playlist I said well I can do Ring of Fire.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: I can do pretty good Johnny Cash that's and then I said hey how about you guys learn we're an American band and I'll sing that and so they learned the song for me and so I I performed the We're an American band uh probably fifty to a hundred times with the band.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah that's one of the things that that that is Mike's favorite band.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: Yes Grandfunk Railroad is my favorite band Mike and I went to a a concert with Grandfunk Ray Road and uh didn't you catch one of the drummers drumstick or something?
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah Don Brewer is the drummer and when I was in high school I had like wavy hair my my hair history was kind of like the Brady bunch.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Remember they had the comb down kind of look and then all of a sudden everybody including dad got perms right and so I I took a picture of Don Brewer that came in one of my albums and I took it to my to a barber with my buddy Alan who introduced me to grab puff I go I want my hair to look like this because I had kind of wavy curly hair fizzy and uh he goes that's a perm.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: I said okay fine so my mom gave me a perm we got a wavy clerol perm and so I was like the full African and uh the the afro thing going and high in my senior year in high school and uh I forgot the question now.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Well we were just talking about the American band and the uh Oh the drumstick.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: The drumstick Yeah we we went to a concert with with Grand Funk and Don Brewer always would toss his drumsticks at the end of the show to people who are in the front few rows and I got one of his drumsticks and so and it it's leather wrapped and it's it's got it's got Grand Funk Don Brewer uh engraved on the drumstick.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: I still got it.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Matter of fact I I used to play that in the gig and uh my the drummer Kelly said, you know what?
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: You might want to just like not play that 'cause you're gonna break it or lose it so I got a what they call a beater.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: It looks like a little night stick that a cop would have but it's only about nine inches long.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: And so I got a I got a beater that I used instead of the drumstick.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: So well that's that's why I think we became friends and our friends because we were so much alike.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: I mean uh as a kid I I went water skiing, snow skiing, uh played golf, um did sports did all those things same thing you did growing up and I did all those things.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: And my dad had a boat and so I did a lot of uh fishing.
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah and fishing I love fishing.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: You know one of the things we used to do that was uh some of the best times in Palm Springs is you know it's in the wintertime when there wasn't much to do people say well what do you do in the wintertime in Palm Springs?
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Um and I said well you know we used to take a car ride about uh ten minutes from my house hop in a tram go up to the top of the tram and we go snowshoeing and we'd go snowshoeing in the tr up top of the tram in Palm Springs.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: It was just like I did.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Absolutely I went up about a year ago to snowshoe with someone else uh who was uh the he was the attorney for the the Winter Park Authority which is a tram board and uh I and so I I only went like to the Ranger station and it wasn't that my body wasn't working.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: It was I just couldn't I I didn't have the wind anymore.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: At that altitude is eight thousand feet.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: And so yeah we we went no show that those were great times.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: I'm really glad we did that and we went hiking we we camped at at Round Valley a few times.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: Overnight camping uh yeah I had the whole like tent and and and you had like a tarp.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: Exactly just laid a tarp on the ground I had all this equipment the stoves and and you had like a little bag in your hand and a tarp.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: And you laid the tarp down and then folded over yourself to cover up and it did rain that night too and I bring the stakes though that's one of the things I I wouldn't forget would I bring the stakes absolutely absolutely I miss having you guys here.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: So it's one thing uh Mike was on that authority board uh of the train and so that's one of the reasons we did the right for free and we did so much up there too was because it was you know just part of what he he did and uh I was a part of that.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: In fact I would before our winter park authority meetings the board meetings were like once a month I would go up early take the 6 a.m car and hike around do that long valley loop you know the round valley loop where you it's like four it's like four miles.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: I would do that before the meeting and then come up and and sit in the meeting.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah so you know Palm Springs was a wonderful place to be I just had I just got full of California the politics and everything else like that and Elise wanted to when ever since we started dating and we got married was someday she's coming home and home to her was not so much Anna Illinois where she is right now but home to her was Ole Miss.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: And yeah well that's that's that's a great move and uh what one of my friends Gene who's listening from Missouri right now who lives outside of Kansas City and his family had background they were like founding fathers of Palm Springs and for him to leave to go to Missouri is uh incredible to me.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: And uh and unfortunately I've lost some of my best friends who just said I'm out of here and they and they moved away my my golf who was a great who's a great friend of mine Mark we had a lot common and our wives like each other.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: And we had we had daughters so when I was over visit him uh they would watch our kids when they were really young and needed to be like supervised and then we moved to Utah.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: So right now you've got listen and I sent them email so right now I want to say hi to them.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: So we got listeners in Utah and Missoula and California today.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: Hey I'm sure we have listeners over my rain right now too but anyway hey Mike I want to go yeah I want you to go ahead and um talk a little bit about your political thinking and how is it how it's changed over the years because a lot of our thinking has changed over the years.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: Well uh one of the things when I was um just old enough to vote so it was in the 70s, middle late 70s, uh I had I w when I had my perm I used to have to go to a hairstylist and uh the the woman who who was much older than me she was probably in her 30s and she she cut my hair and she was very persuasive and she said she told me all about the Libertarian Party.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: So when I I I may have been a Republican at that point or I may not even have registered yet to vote because it was I was probably just old enough.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: So I registered as a libertarian and then I switched to Republican the whenever uh I because I felt I was wasting my vote and I in those days in California you could vote Republican and you vote win out.
- 39:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah you won.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah so and so then later I switched back to libertarian because the um I felt that you know the Democrats one of the things is they do is with their platform they tell you what they're gonna do.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: They say we're gonna tax and spend and we're gonna run up the deficit.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: The Republicans are going to say no we're against deficit spending and we're not we're gonna lower your taxes and but then they lied to me because the politicians that were elected would vote for these bloated budgets and increase the deficit.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: And so I said hey look it you guys are you're not you're talking the talk but you're not walking the walk and so if you're not gonna walk the walk then I'm gonna walk back to the Libertarian Party.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: So I'm now a registered libertarian.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: See I I would probably never change from a Republican but I I just I classify Republicans as Republican communists which are no longer rhinos rhinos are Republican communists and then Republican MAGA and I'm a MAGA Republican and um just like I was a Tea Party Republican.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: Oh you're deplorable yeah exactly Tea Party Republicans and MAGA Republicans are are pretty much a lot the same thing and uh I will always be that because here here like I say in Mississippi there's a lot of uh politicians who are like the Republicans you talk about and even though here they're still a lot better than California Republicans California Republicans they're the worst that's one of the things Elise and I did when she was on our radio show back there we criticized Republicans all the time.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: In fact a lot of people didn't like us because you know we were against Reagan's 13th amendment or whatever you know that was all about which was nothing because we always criticized the Republicans called them out for Republicans that voted like Democrats.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: It was the 11th Amendment.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah there you go thanks the 11th commandment if you vote like a Democrat you're not a Republican and you're not someone I want to associate with.
- 41:58SPEAKER_02: And the only way I know how to get a Republican official to change their vote is to criticize them and call them out in public.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: And I don't know how about how you you feel about that.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: Did anybody ever come to you and call you out as a Republican on the city council uh no in fact uh as I mentioned before the first election was very heated and there was a lot of people who voted against me because of they Dana Hodges didn't get appointed to a vacant seat when Ron Oden moved up uh to mayor and so um so but they but they came up to me later and said you know what Mike I voted against you because I thought what they did to Dana was wrong but the next time I'm gonna vote for you and these were Democrats.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: Right and uh but and so they said it's not personal I we like you but we just did this because of we thought ethically and morally this is what we should do.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: And I understood that and so a lot of those a lot of those people that voted against me in the first election became good friends of mine because they were they were active politically.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: So right uh just like on Thursday remember Robert Bannett was one of was one of the guys it's Thomas and Robert.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: So Thomas was more volatile but Robert was really was really sensible and uh and and so they they became friends of mine.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: Every Thursday night there's what's called Village Fest in Palm Springs and the Republican women would have a booth down there, registering voters and the Democrats would have a booth down there too.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: And I'd have a great time every Thursday night going down to the Democrat booth and talking to the Democrats down there and they knew who I was I knew who they were and we had a good time talking.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: Uh Xander Uh what was George Xander?
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: George Xander.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: I love talking to George Xander.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: What a radical communist he was.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: And he was on Elise's show, and he'd and he'd even call himself a radical communist.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: But we wanted to make sure we had him on so Republicans would understand.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: He was still a great guy.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: And he would always give me all the insights about what was going on in the Democrat Party.
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: And he told me one time that, hey, I'm going to vote for Republican for the first time in my life.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: I go, George, no, you're not going to you're not going to vote for Bonnie Garcia for assembly.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: Oh no, no, I wouldn't never vote for Bonnie Garcia.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: I'm going to go ahead and vote for I keep on forgetting the guy's name.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: And when he said his name, I said, Oh my goodness, I can't believe it.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: So right then I started a campaign because I knew he had to sell his republicanism out to run and get endorsed by the Democrat Party of Palm Springs.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: And he started, oh, I started going, writing letters up and down, and I had a big email list and a big radio show.
- 45:03SPEAKER_02: And he started attacking me.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: What he didn't realize was he was winning at the time and beating Bonnie Garcia.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: But there's a whole big population on the other side of the hill that was a Republican who couldn't stand Democrats.
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: And they started to get involved and they realized uh what was going on with Mr.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: Miller.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: And from absentee voting, which he won and beat Bonnie Garcia, till the voting election day, there was a big swing in people voting for Bonnie Garcia instead of him, and Bonnie beat him.
- 45:39SPEAKER_02: And I thought I thought that was so good because he he took me on and he lost.
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and uh yeah, that that's how I got to know Steve Sanchez.
- 45:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, Steve was another great guy.
- 45:52SPEAKER_02: I we had so much fun.
- 45:53SPEAKER_02: He still is.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: We have so much fun with Steve.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: He's the Laquinta uh City Councilwoman.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: And when when he was running for assembly, I'd go down to Coachella and deal with all the people in Coachella.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: Here, just another thing about the bad things that happened in the Democrat Party.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: Quick story.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: They're having a Saturday barbecue ten years ago.
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: And at the time, the absentee voter population in 99% Hispanic Coachella was 7%.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: They had a barbecue on Saturday and they went ahead and it was to sign up new voters.
- 46:26SPEAKER_02: They signed up 500 new voters, 497 of them were absentee voters.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: Hey, what made that big switch?
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: During that election, because we was helping helping uh Mr.
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: Uh Vivicencia run for mayor, Elise saw people taking all these absentee ballots and putting them through the back window of City Hall.
- 46:55SPEAKER_02: Because at the time you had to be a relative to drop off the absentee ballot.
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: But they take like piles full and she'd watch them just hand them through the back window.
- 47:04SPEAKER_02: You know, they took all those absentee, gave them here.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: Here's a loaf of bread, hey, here's a bottle of booze, hey, give me your ballot and we'll fill it out for you.
- 47:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was just scam after scam that started in California and moved across the count uh uh across California.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you asked me a question the other uh yesterday about whether or not when I I ran again for counsel years later and and lost, and you w you asked me about was there voter fraud, and I said, I don't think there's butter fraud, but then thinking about it, here's what happens.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: In Palm Springs, there's a lot of vacation rentals where people rent out their houses.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: And so these people uh live in those houses or they own the houses and they or they rent them they live in all the time.
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: They re-registered a bunch of people who you know, it's a gray area.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: You know, you can't be registered in two locations, so they would they would change their residency and their voter what location to Palm Springs for this election and then likely switched it back.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: But so they didn't really cheat, but it's cheating.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: It's cheating because what they do, Mike, they would have illegal.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: It was illegal.
- 48:23SPEAKER_02: They'd have off-year elections in Palm Springs for City Council.
- 48:27SPEAKER_02: So they would you have to be a permanent resident of one place in California.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: You can't from year to the next year re-register as having a permanent residence in two different places.
- 48:40SPEAKER_02: So technically it's illegal, but they would change a residenti voter registration.
- 48:47SPEAKER_02: Like you said, they cancel it in LA and they go ahead and sign up in Palm Springs.
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: And then they vote, and after they voted, they would cancel in Palm Springs and sign up in LA so they could vote for all the state elections and everything else like that.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: You know, Palm Springs was pretty smart, the Democrat Party, about having off-year elections down there.
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we well, you know, we we were aware of it, but there was no point in really pursuing it.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: You know, I don't want to be a look at you know, look what they did like they do to Trump uh with when he challenged the tweet election.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: You know, it it so they they just they you know I didn't want to be painted as a sore loser.
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: No.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: Even though we knew you were.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: Well, I wasn't a loser, but I was sore.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: Uh exactly.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: I lost, but I wasn't a loser.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it wasn't by a little either.
- 49:38SPEAKER_01: It was a like Well, I'm trying to uh you know, I'm trying to channel Trump here because you know one of the things about him, he I he really uh I found him really obnoxious, but now he's funny.
- 49:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: I mean the guy is uh it's like a stand-up comedy when he does a press conference.
- 49:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:55SPEAKER_01: The guy is really funny, and so I think he's lightened up and changed his.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: And he's he's done so much great for the country.
- 50:05SPEAKER_01: I can't Yeah, we well I mentioned that he kept Hillary and uh and uh and Kamala out of the presidency single-handedly.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, so he should we should put a statue up for him just for that.
- 50:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because he's not like your conventional s you know, Republican that we all don't like who sits there and votes, you know, present and lets the country go to hell because they're too uh squeally moushed to go ahead and fight for uh the people.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: Yep, and uh so who do you think uh the s uh uh JD Vance will be the Republican nominee, you think?
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: I hope so.
- 50:51SPEAKER_02: I don't think there's anybody who's going to go ahead and uh um challenge him.
- 50:56SPEAKER_01: You know who I'm really impressed with?
- 50:59SPEAKER_01: Marco Rubio.
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Little Rubio, Marco, little Marco.
- 51:02SPEAKER_02: He's turned out to be great.
- 51:04SPEAKER_02: Trump loves him, Marco loves Trump.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, what a what a switch turnaround.
- 51:09SPEAKER_01: Well, look at what Trump did.
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: You know, Trump version 2.0 versus 1.0.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: He he appointed a bunch of people who he people the the people who were in power said, you need you should appoint these guys, and he did.
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: And so you got a bunch of idiots in there that caused problems.
- 51:30SPEAKER_01: Now he appointed who he wanted to do, and Rubio ran against him.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 51:35SPEAKER_01: And and uh but he didn't hold a grudge.
- 51:38SPEAKER_01: He says he's transactional.
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: Well that's the best term I've heard described.
- 51:43SPEAKER_01: He his transaction was I'm running for I'm running for the nomination, so I'm gonna like make fun of Rubio because he's gore or whatever.
- 51:51SPEAKER_01: And uh I'm gonna make fun of this guy and make fun of this guy, and then when he wins, he appoints them.
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: He destroyed Rubio.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: He destroyed Rubio.
- 52:00SPEAKER_02: Little Marco.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, but he doesn't he he doesn't hold the grudge, and they patched it up, and he knew that Rubio was a rising star, he was just a little bit before his time, and Trump was too much of a senior to go ahead and allow him to gain any momentum.
- 52:19SPEAKER_02: But in the future, after J D, there's a good chance Marco might do it, you know, and so yeah, I think JD's got the got got the inside track, and uh he he he's a little scary to me.
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and just and DeSantis is another one that is getting.
- 52:39SPEAKER_01: They've got a strong bullpen.
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: Very strong bullpen.
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not like the Democrats.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 52:47SPEAKER_02: You know, I again, and that's why he's gotta clean up the the voting.
- 52:51SPEAKER_02: You know, because you know, we just can't get stuck with uh bad election going on here.
- 52:56SPEAKER_02: Because we know they cheat.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but he would when in in defense of Trump when he's challenging the uh outcome of the Biden uh win.
- 53:09SPEAKER_01: Uh there was like some odd things that I've seen about there was like five hundred five hundred thousand requests for absentee voters and and six hundred got turned in or something.
- 53:25SPEAKER_02: Coachella, hey, can you hear where'd it start?
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: Coachella?
- 53:29SPEAKER_02: We were there, we saw it happen.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: You know, I'll came from California.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: I think they need to switch to uh absentee should be absentee, you should be out of the country or sit or something, but this mail in voting is just just ripe for cheating.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: We should be able to we should have to show up with voter ID to vo vote.
- 53:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 53:52SPEAKER_01: Don't don't denigrate African Americans and say they they're they can't get an ID.
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: Stupid to get an ID, yeah.
- 54:00SPEAKER_02: Or women.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: How racist is that?
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: Hey, we m my wife had a woman the other day tell her that you can't vote for Trump because he's gonna take the vote away from women to vote.
- 54:13SPEAKER_02: Take the vote away from women that can't vote?
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: Trump's gonna do that?
- 54:18SPEAKER_01: Give me a break.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's not Trump derangement syndrome, it's Trump Trump derangement disease.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:25SPEAKER_01: And it's incurable.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:26SPEAKER_02: So how many illegals are on the voter roll in California?
- 54:30SPEAKER_02: And you don't think they don't vote?
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: You can't tell.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: You can't figure it out.
- 54:35SPEAKER_02: You can't measure it, right, Mike?
- 54:38SPEAKER_01: Well, they can get a driver's license for a semi-truck and jack knife it and kill ten people on the freeway.
- 54:44SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 54:44SPEAKER_02: But you can't as well be able to vote.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:47SPEAKER_02: Anyway, Mike, I'll tell you what.
- 54:49SPEAKER_02: We've had a great time here.
- 54:51SPEAKER_02: Our time has run out.
- 54:52SPEAKER_02: I want to thank you for being on the show.
- 54:55SPEAKER_02: And uh maybe sometime when Elise is running the show, maybe she'll have yawn.
- 54:59SPEAKER_02: Because she's listening, by the way.
- 55:01SPEAKER_02: Elise, how'd I do today?
- 55:02SPEAKER_02: Did I do all right?
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: Uh so thanks a lot, Mike, for being on the show.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: You bet anytime.
- 55:08SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 55:09SPEAKER_02: Hope you like the show today.
