- 0:01Hey everyone welcome to the eye opener
- 0:05society i want to welcome everybody and thank
- 0:08everybody for joining us on this really
- 0:11a historic episode because really this is the first episode as the eye opener
- 0:18society where hannah is not joining us um i know i've been cryptic on facebook
- 0:24for those of you following me on facebook i've been kind of cryptic i was giving
- 0:28Giving little kind of messages and hints and all that,
- 0:31you know, behind the scenes, we are real people going through real life,
- 0:35going through real situations.
- 0:36And logistically, it gets difficult when, you know, Hannah has a two-year-old
- 0:41and they went away kind of short notice on a vacation.
- 0:45And so they left, even though I had this show lined up and it happens.
- 0:50But this is good. I have Brittany with me. Brittany, thank you for joining and
- 0:54being a host for tonight.
- 0:56Hi, everyone. everyone thank you gary for
- 1:00having me back yeah for sure i
- 1:02i appreciate you joining and uh like i said just standing
- 1:05in here i just want to be 100 clear that hannah is not gone forever this is
- 1:11one show we may lose her again at the end of the month because she's actually
- 1:15leaving the country to go on vacation i'm the only one who doesn't go on vacation
- 1:18sitting in front of this microphone is my vacation but i want to jump into this
- 1:23episode because this one is really good.
- 1:27Um i'm hosted on podbean that's where eye opener
- 1:30society is hosted and over the
- 1:32weekend or something like that they always have like this promote yourself sunday
- 1:36and so other podcasters could drop their links
- 1:39and all that and i like that because i like to you know
- 1:42try and find another podcast to listen to and i
- 1:44got so many of them and i ran across
- 1:47two and this one's been fantastic for
- 1:50me because it's different and i couldn't
- 1:54you know really i can't
- 1:57get over the fact that it's so important and but as i'm going to give it the
- 2:02eye-opener treatment too as well because there's so much that's involved in
- 2:06this and i'm talking about prepping and i don't care if you're prepping for
- 2:10a small little you know power outage for a couple of days or the apocalypse if you're not
- 2:16starting at some point and getting things in order.
- 2:21And I'm not just talking about storage of food and water.
- 2:25There is so much more to it. And it's actually becomes almost a lifestyle that
- 2:29you have to do in order to be prepared.
- 2:33Today, we have Lynn Jordan. She has the podcast Urban Lady. I'm sorry.
- 2:40Lynn Jordan, why don't you jump
- 2:42on and introduce and you're going to do a much better better job to it.
- 2:44Tell the audience everything about urban lady prepping and what's going on with
- 2:50that and where we can find you and all.
- 2:54Oh, hello. Thank you very much for having me on the show. And thank you, Brittany.
- 2:58And I'm sorry, I didn't get a chance to hang with Hannah, but that'll come.
- 3:01But I love Brittany. Brittany has some great questions.
- 3:04But yes, my name is Lynn Jordan, and my podcast is Urban Lady Prepper.
- 3:09And it focuses on single moms and
- 3:12single females who live in urban
- 3:15areas and how to get them involved
- 3:17in prepping so we're
- 3:20dealing with you know maybe limited space limited
- 3:24budget so I just want to kind of coach them into
- 3:27getting involved and just being more prepared like you said from a small
- 3:29event from a cup from a storm that may take out power to maybe someone she loses
- 3:34her job or you know something cataclysmic happens a disaster happens so it's
- 3:40not just a budget thing or a space thing it's also a mindset thing which is
- 3:43why I think if this is a a good intersection with what you guys do at Eye Opener.
- 3:49But you can find me on Podbean. That's where we found each other.
- 3:52I'm also on Facebook, on the Bird app, because it'll always be Twitter.
- 3:58And let's see, I'm also on Instagram, and it's all under Urban Lady Prepper.
- 4:05It's pretty consistent with that.
- 4:07And I do have a website, urbanladyprepper.com.
- 4:10That is where my blog is. pretty much everything I do is based off of the blog.
- 4:16They're pretty, they're concise. They're very easy to read, I believe.
- 4:21And I do cite the sources that I use to get the information.
- 4:24And I use that as a springboard for the podcast where I expand on those different
- 4:29things and give some examples of how I experienced it or how someone else may
- 4:34have experienced something that brings up a prepping issue.
- 4:38So that's pretty much what I'm about, just trying to get the word out.
- 4:41You know, the weather is getting more extreme and we're having all these different,
- 4:45you know, social events, weather events.
- 4:50Again, you know, the economy with the job thing is switching out and AI,
- 4:54all these different things are happening. And I think that especially as women, we earn less.
- 5:00We have maybe a job that could be replaced by something else that we just need
- 5:05to have in our minds that if something should happen, can we at least be able
- 5:09to subsist for a certain period of time?
- 5:13And especially if we have kids, if we have pets, there's a lot.
- 5:16There's a lot. So if there's any way that I can help the ladies out there kind
- 5:20of get into that mindset and be more prepared, I think that that's great.
- 5:25But that being said, I think that the information I provide is for everyone.
- 5:29I think everyone can benefit, especially if you live in a city.
- 5:33There's nothing that...
- 5:35There are some things that are particular to the ladies, but it could just apply to anybody.
- 5:39I mean, everybody needs to store water. Everyone needs to be prepared,
- 5:43you know, to have some extra food around, you know, an extra power source,
- 5:46maybe be a little more aware of the weather.
- 5:48So it can apply to everyone. Everyone is welcome.
- 5:51I know there's a lot of gatekeeping in prepping and a lot of extremism in prepping and all of that.
- 5:57So, you know, I'm a very centered, very practical person. So I just keep things
- 6:01very nonpolitical, very neutral to make it easy for everyone.
- 6:05Anyone that's listening that wants to get more information on prepping will
- 6:10not feel excluded or not feel that I'm not speaking to them.
- 6:12That and that's important um when i
- 6:15when i spoke to you um off the
- 6:18air here i said i was always interested in
- 6:21prepping i always uh tried reading a lot
- 6:24of books about it and all but when i heard your show
- 6:27i just didn't realize because i was just looking at prepping as
- 6:31a whole and i just didn't realize
- 6:34and when you sit and think about it single females single
- 6:38males people with disabilities people with pets
- 6:41people with children it's going to
- 6:44be different for each person and
- 6:47how to do this so let me start by asking you uh lynn what actually started you
- 6:53in prepping and when did you actually start prepping uh well i grew up in for
- 7:00the most part in an apartment building in the city up in queens where i'm from
- 7:04please we're both from new york so So, yeah,
- 7:05but I grew up in an apartment building and it started with having water because
- 7:11our management had this great thing.
- 7:13They were great with their maintenance work. They would always take care of stuff.
- 7:16But the bad news is if they had to turn the water off, sometimes you knew about
- 7:20it in advance and sometimes you didn't.
- 7:21So you'd get up one morning to wash your hands, take a shower and you turn it
- 7:26off and nothing happens.
- 7:28Or you turn it on and you're like, you, what's that?
- 7:31I'm not touching that. that so we had a mean
- 7:34cola habit back in the day i mean we would polish off two liters sodas like
- 7:37it was nothing back then so we got in the habit of cleaning them out and putting
- 7:41water in it so anytime that we just weren't caught without water on top of the
- 7:46fridge we'd have it under the sink well that dead space was and if for some
- 7:50reason the water was out or if there was some weird
- 7:53advisory going on or if they're like you know cleaning the pipes sometimes they'll
- 7:56run water through the pipes like you don't touch it for a couple hours we could
- 7:59just grab a bottle of water boil it or you know just have it to use so that
- 8:04was so that was kind of prepping without really realizing if you're doing it
- 8:08and then um after i had gotten married.
- 8:13He was from the army. So he was the guy that always had, um,
- 8:17he had always had the extra key. He always had a pen.
- 8:20He always had, um, you know, he always had a thing you need and he was the MacGyver guy.
- 8:25So from him, I kind of got the, okay, what do you mean you don't have an extra key?
- 8:30Like, well, I don't. So he kind of got me in the habit of making sure I had those things.
- 8:36You know, he always had the knife. He was the guy that had the little knife
- 8:38in his little pocket, at, you know, he was that guy.
- 8:41So I kind of, I got used to having those things on me because I just got really
- 8:46tired of going someplace and it's like, I'm locked out of this,
- 8:49or I don't have a pen, or I don't have a piece of paper, or why didn't I,
- 8:51you know, why did I do something a certain way?
- 8:54Why can't I address this right now? Why don't I have this tool?
- 8:58So I got more into doing that because of him. So it was just a very gradual thing.
- 9:04I didn't just wake up one day and go, wow, I'm just going to do this prepping thing.
- 9:08By the time I saw doomsday preppers and started hearing about prepping,
- 9:11I realized I was kind of doing it.
- 9:15You know, my grandmother was from the depression era. My first husband's parents
- 9:19were from the depression era and they always had food because they knew what
- 9:23it was like to not have food.
- 9:25So they always had extra food.
- 9:28And I kind of got in the habit too. I'm like, oh, well, I really don't feel
- 9:31like going to the store, let me just reach in here and grab a can of tuna.
- 9:34And again, you know, when I started getting more into prepping,
- 9:36it's like, well, I kind of am.
- 9:39And then it went from there when he started hearing all these different scenarios.
- 9:43And the big thing was finding out just how scarce fresh water really is.
- 9:47People don't realize it, but we do have a water issue.
- 9:52And we've gotten so accustomed to just turning on a faucet and having something
- 9:57come out. And that's it's a thing.
- 10:00We're draining our aquifers so fast. And when you first hear it.
- 10:04And again, this is way before conspiracy and social media was kind of a thing.
- 10:08Um so i started looking into it
- 10:11like wow okay this this is kind of a problem and with
- 10:15the weather and with you know everything getting hotter and and
- 10:18i can't be i have to make sure that i have water or
- 10:21access to water that could be cleaned because it's
- 10:25it really it's a finite resource so unless you're gathering rainwater
- 10:28or you're sitting on a well and that
- 10:32so that really that started drawing me in more just
- 10:35paying more attention to things like the water and what's
- 10:37going on with our food supply um and then
- 10:41once and you're like wait a minute those are the two most important things you know we have
- 10:44food you know water food and shelter and it kind of it just kind of grew from
- 10:49there okay um now britney i i'm glad you are here because it's so great that
- 10:56you're a single female and you're living in a kind of urban area i'm assuming
- 11:00because i haven't been so this would.
- 11:02Apply to you i mean i know
- 11:05you're probably not prepping i'm sure right now you don't have
- 11:08at least a week's worth of water or something on hand and
- 11:13that's fine because most people we go through life not even realizing that there's
- 11:18a potential that we could be without this you know without supplies food shelter
- 11:24clothing at any point so how does this hit you right now Like sitting there
- 11:30as a single female, not prepping.
- 11:32I mean, is it something that you give any thought to?
- 11:35Oh, I haven't, I haven't given so much thought to this. It's actually really interesting.
- 11:42I think it's made me realize how much I actually take for granted every day.
- 11:48And I always say, as long as my son and I have food, water, and a roof over our head, we're good.
- 11:56But just things like, as I was listening to your podcast, Lynn,
- 12:00I'm realizing I lost power probably about six months ago.
- 12:05And it was out for about 14 hours.
- 12:08I had no flashlights. lights, I had nothing to even be able to support myself during the day.
- 12:18I had to go out to my car to charge my phone. So that prompted me to at least
- 12:23get the flashlights first, extra batteries.
- 12:29I have bottles of water. I do have at least two gallons of water that are the fresh water.
- 12:36Um but it also little
- 12:38power banks things to help so because if
- 12:41my phone goes out i have no communication with anybody outside of my apartment
- 12:47complex and we're in a very like urban area so it's definitely made me start
- 12:55to think and one of the things that you said it's not just.
- 13:01Prepping for a zombie apocalypse or a natural disaster.
- 13:06Yes, those are things that I have to keep in mind. But what if I lose my job? What if I lose power?
- 13:11What if our water's out for a couple of days?
- 13:15How can I support myself? But
- 13:16not only myself, I have a little human that I'm raising and I have a dog.
- 13:22So those were things that it's just immediately got me thinking and just made
- 13:28me realize how how much I've actually taken for granted most of my adult life.
- 13:34I'm never thinking about this. Yeah. And it's, it speaks to,
- 13:40you know, we're great. You know, it's great that we're in a country where we
- 13:44don't have to think twice about where we're getting our food from.
- 13:47If we can't reach into the refrigerator, if we can't reach into the pantry and
- 13:51I say this to get what we want, not that we need it, but we can't reach in and get what we want.
- 13:56We have choices. And if we don't like those choices, we can walk down to the store.
- 14:01You know, we can go to the corner bodega. We can go to a BJ's.
- 14:04We can go to a Wally World, you know, and go to a place where there are aisles and aisles of food.
- 14:09So we've gotten very accustomed to just being able to walk in and get what we
- 14:13want and not think about having but so much around because everything is convenient.
- 14:19And, you know, the convenience, I think, has made us not just physically lazy
- 14:24because everything's in the drive-thru now.
- 14:26Now, you know, that's one thing, you know, everything's a drive-thru.
- 14:29You don't even have to get out of your car to get it.
- 14:31You can sit at home. I mean, even now, and I'm guilty of it too.
- 14:34It's like, I don't want to go to the store. Just look up Amazon and have them bring it to me.
- 14:38And this is where we're at and we're blessed to have that kind of lifestyle, but.
- 14:44Everything, everyone becomes equal. I don't care where you are in the world.
- 14:47Everybody becomes equal when you don't have power.
- 14:50Because what separates us for a lot, a lot of places in the world is that we
- 14:54have such abundant energy.
- 14:56I mean, our grid is, is, is a hot mess, but we have power when we want it.
- 15:01So unless for some reason we don't have it i
- 15:04mean we're able to do just about everything but
- 15:06like you say once the power goes out and you have a tv
- 15:09you can't turn on you have a phone that was that
- 15:12your battery is dying you're no different from someone who doesn't who's never
- 15:17had either so unless you take out the convenience factor and say okay if this
- 15:22if for some reason the power went out or like just even in this country and
- 15:27all you need is one tornado and you're out of stuff or
- 15:30a hurricane and you're out of power and you're out of food and you can't get to anything so,
- 15:36it's not about being super paranoid but just saying you know what if i
- 15:39can go to the store right now could i go in
- 15:42my refrigerator in my pantry right now and feed myself or feed my kids or because
- 15:46i have two dogs i don't have kids but i have two dogs um you know can i take
- 15:50care of them and not have to leave my house for a week you know what if it's
- 15:53too dangerous because of the weather or because there's debris or because people
- 15:56are losing their mind in the street and i don't feel safe going out of my house?
- 16:00Am I in a position to stay put and be able to feed myself and feed my kids and my creatures?
- 16:07So that leads me into a question, and you may have covered this in one of your
- 16:13podcasts, and I'm sorry I didn't get to listen to all of them.
- 16:16But for me, I know right now I don't have a week's worth of food in my pantry
- 16:24that would support myself, my child, and my dog would be good,
- 16:29but for at least my child and I.
- 16:31I know one thing, always when snowstorms come and it kind of shuts things down,
- 16:38I tend to get very anxious and very overwhelmed.
- 16:44I guess I kind of answer my own question, but do you have any advice for people
- 16:50who do have that anxiety or tend to get overwhelmed when they're trying to start
- 16:55this process and how to aid it?
- 16:57Like, is there something that you recommend we start first with and then just add on?
- 17:04Well, the most important thing definitely is water. You know,
- 17:08if you have extra stored water, you can survive longer with water than without food.
- 17:15Usually when I'm one of those people, once you put me on the spot with figures,
- 17:18I'm lucky if I remember my name.
- 17:20But I think you can go for a week or like seven days or 10 days without.
- 17:27That sounds extreme. But you can go longer without food than water.
- 17:31So that's your most important thing. If you have a couple of cases of water
- 17:35just sitting somewhere, that's better than nothing.
- 17:38This way, if you have water to drink, and that's the other thing people don't think about.
- 17:43If you don't have water, if your water's turned off for some reason,
- 17:45or like where I'm at, I'm in Georgia.
- 17:48We had a couple of water main breaks, and either you had to boil your water
- 17:50or you didn't have any water.
- 17:52So it's not just, okay, you need this to drink. People kind of overlook the
- 17:57fact that you need to wash your hands. You need to use the bathroom.
- 18:00You need to cook your food. Some of your food needs water.
- 18:04It's great if you have noodles and pasta sitting there to fix,
- 18:07but if you have no water to cook it in.
- 18:09So that's the most important thing. If you just grab a couple of cases just
- 18:14to have it, I think that's a great place to start.
- 18:18And just go for the cheap stuff that you don't hate. And that's just the best way.
- 18:23You can walk into a store and get a bag of pasta for 45 cents.
- 18:28You walk in there with 20 bucks and you can get a few cans of beans,
- 18:31get cheap pasta, get yourself some rice.
- 18:36Again, you know, it's not going to be gourmet. It might not be the thing that
- 18:39you would want to eat every day, but it beats being hungry.
- 18:42So, you know, start with the index and you can get so many things for under three dollars.
- 18:46You can walk into a Walmart or walk into even the more expensive stores where
- 18:49they have their bogos or they have their, you know, three for ones or all of
- 18:54that and say, you know what? but let me just grab a couple of cans of this or a couple of cans of that.
- 18:59And I think that's the best place to start. This way you're not busting your budget.
- 19:04Just take that extra $10 and just buy those couple of staples,
- 19:07and you could just stick them in your pantry and have them.
- 19:11And I think that would make you, between the water and having that kind of food,
- 19:15and you said you already have flashlights, you have a power bank,
- 19:18that's the best place to start.
- 19:20You had also mentioned, as far as resources.
- 19:25One of your more recent episodes, you're saying like the dollar stores can be
- 19:29your best friend when it comes to prepping because they do sell all those cheap
- 19:33flashlights and things of that sort that come in handy.
- 19:38And it's a great resource even for food.
- 19:42Now, while on our show, we always talk about the poisons in food,
- 19:46but all that salt that's in those foods, it will last a lot longer on the shelf
- 19:52if you're buying it and storing it away.
- 19:54So don't shy away from it just because, hey, this is not nutritious.
- 19:58It'll be the most nutritious thing you'll have at some point if you really are into prepping,
- 20:03and that's the only resource you have so it's
- 20:07not a bad idea to stock up on things like
- 20:10that yeah and and as
- 20:13but as much as people talk about or nutritionists
- 20:16speak poorly about things like ramen noodles oh yeah absolutely
- 20:19horrible i mean you can't eat that every day uh the so and i'm a salt person
- 20:23and the sodium will kill you you can't just eat all of that but if you don't
- 20:27have any they last forever pretty much as long as you keep things stored um
- 20:31and it's food you know the the thing is when you're if you're anxious about a situation,
- 20:37if you're going through like a mini disaster or mini shortage or a situation
- 20:41where the power is going to be out for a while, you're not really worried about
- 20:46your palate as much as you're worried about eating.
- 20:48So in that case, you want something that has some sort, it might not have the
- 20:53most nutritious value, but you're looking for the calories. You're looking for that caloric density.
- 20:58You're looking for something that'll take the crease out of your stomach. So it's hard.
- 21:01It's just like when your back is hurting and you can't think about anything
- 21:03else it's worse when you're hungry so yeah you know having a couple of those
- 21:09is not the worst thing in the world that they might not be something that you
- 21:11would eat regularly but if it's something that you can throw into a bug-out bag.
- 21:17Yeah, it's, it's good to have that. And dollar stores are great for like for
- 21:22little flashlights and little toolkits and little first aid jammies little for dog things.
- 21:28I mean, I got a couple of leashes for a buck. I throw it in their bug out bag.
- 21:31And you can you can do a lot. So it's just a matter of just taking a minute
- 21:36to browse and say, you know what, we get my kid likes this, you know,
- 21:39my kid likes to play card games, or here's some hard candy, or,
- 21:42you know, here's some, here's some rope, here's some tarp, here's some cheap towels.
- 21:47Um, so yeah, so I think dollar stores are great for that kind of stuff.
- 21:51And it's not stuff that it's not the highest quality stuff, but this isn't stuff
- 21:55you're beating on every day.
- 21:56These are things that you might just need in a pinch, but at least you have it.
- 22:01So yes, I will champion them for that reason.
- 22:04I mean, there are reasons to hate dollar stores, but for something like this, I think they're great.
- 22:11Well, I, just to put this out there, I didn't grow up around the dollar store.
- 22:15So when I did run, that was of course the same when my power went out.
- 22:19So I went to the dollar store and I was actually amazed by how much they had
- 22:23there that just around the house would be useful.
- 22:28So I got so many different flashlights, one for every room, just so I know that
- 22:33if it ever goes out, I know exactly where it is and I can grab it and then get
- 22:38to wherever I need safely. So yeah.
- 22:41Yeah. I'd, my, my thing is I think if you have the ones and usually they come
- 22:44with the, with a little hoop, with a little hoop or a hoop, the little hook,
- 22:49a little cord or whatever.
- 22:50I have one on every hinge. Every room has a flashlight.
- 22:53So in the dark, other than it's more of an advanced thing, but if you're in
- 22:58your house, you should know how to be able to navigate your house in the dark.
- 23:01So that's one thing, but I know that if my lights go out and I have,
- 23:05I know where everything is. I don't have to look.
- 23:07I even where my dog's leashes are. I know which dog is which leash.
- 23:10I don't even have to look because I keep things in the same place,
- 23:13you know, the same place every time.
- 23:16And I just know where things are. And if I'm ever in complete darkness,
- 23:20I can find things because I keep, I know where they are. I know that I'm going
- 23:24to have a flashlight on this hinge.
- 23:25I know their leashes are over there. I know where my power banks are.
- 23:29I don't have to see them to go get them. Um, so yeah, I, I think that that's,
- 23:33that would be one tip I would give people.
- 23:35If you've got those little flashlights instead of trying to,
- 23:37cause everyone has that kitchen junk drawer that you open, it's a horror show.
- 23:41It's like a whole, it's like a whole closet in a drawer.
- 23:44Um, yeah, I just get them out of there because when you forget about them and
- 23:47then they turn into like this battery Uzi thing.
- 23:50Um, but just keep them, keep them on the hinge. I think that that's one piece
- 23:54of advice I can give you with those.
- 23:57I'm going to go down a few roads now with
- 24:00you just to be fun and just to be the eye-opener
- 24:04society if anybody listens to this show knows me
- 24:07and my conspiracies but i when i
- 24:11started reading about prepping and again i'm like you you put me on the spot
- 24:15i my brain retains only certain things but the important things like authors
- 24:20names and all i i don't recall them because i was reading a book on prepping
- 24:25and i i really wish i had the author's name if i find it i'll put it in the show synopsis,
- 24:30but i just want you to think about this for a second and let me know your opinion on it um.
- 24:37In the most extreme case all right of
- 24:40an apocalyptic event whether
- 24:43it be war or even a major
- 24:47storm because we've had major storms i mean if we look at louisiana you know
- 24:50with the dams breaking and um just even in uh was it katrina in new york and
- 24:57the flooding and everything yeah yeah so he's there for that yeah now these
- 25:02things can happen but if you're prepping and you have
- 25:07everything stored right and you know where it
- 25:09is you have it in your house you have a week's worth of water you
- 25:12have all this food the one thing i was taught by
- 25:15reading this in the worst case scenario you
- 25:19can't take all that stuff with you and there's going
- 25:22to be times you're going to have to get mobile
- 25:25now i could go into a lot more where they were saying you have
- 25:28to be mobile because staying in one place is bad and if
- 25:32we're looking at an urban area all right i'm going to i'm gonna put this
- 25:35all together for you this is just my mind working
- 25:38and i that's why i wanted you in here because i'm sure you'll
- 25:41have you know an opinion or something on it in an
- 25:44urban area because we all know rural if if we really do get something very apocalyptic
- 25:51rural you probably have a little bit more chance for survival there's more places
- 25:56to go less people um you have more area to store stuff. You could stay put for a while.
- 26:04Urban, these big cities, major cities like New York and all, right?
- 26:08The first place the government's going to send people to get you is going to
- 26:12be in an urban area. They're going to pull you out or they're going to want you to leave.
- 26:15You're not going to be able to stand behind.
- 26:18And so you're going to lose all that stuff that you accumulated as far as your
- 26:24survival stuff, your waters and all that.
- 26:26You may be sent to certain camps, FEMA camps and all that.
- 26:33Can we still prep and survive something like that?
- 26:38Yeah. And actually, I think it was a blog from like a couple of weeks ago.
- 26:43It was the whole question of, you know, to bug in or bug out.
- 26:48And while you always have those lone wolf types that are always like,
- 26:52you must constantly, you must move, you must be ready to move immediately.
- 26:54And that and there's something to that and you should be ready to go but at
- 27:01first it's just like when you learn cpr you learn first aid the most important
- 27:06thing you can do is assess the situation well awareness is the first thing the
- 27:11second thing is to be able to assess the situation so,
- 27:15if for example for like a hurricane you know it's coming you know you we usually
- 27:20get plenty of notice that a hurricane's coming.
- 27:23You don't know how strong it's going to be. You don't know how long it's going
- 27:26to last. It might end up being nothing. It might be the worst thing ever.
- 27:29But the bottom line is, is you have the knowledge. If you've been aware enough
- 27:32to listen to the news and you know that it's coming, your best defense is saying,
- 27:36okay, well, I have four days to make some choices. So what am I going to do?
- 27:42If I am put out or for like a tornado or a situation where maybe there's a fire
- 27:48and your building's fine, but they want you to leave because they're not sure
- 27:51if it's going to be structurally sound or if there's going to be an issue and they evacuate you.
- 27:56If you have any sort of heads up, then that's when you have to make your choices.
- 28:00You might only have an hour or two. Like if it's a fire or if there's a tornado,
- 28:03you might have to make some choices quickly.
- 28:05But, you know, again, if you have your bug out bag ready, if it's a situation
- 28:10where you have a couple of days and you can say, okay, well,
- 28:13I might not be able to take all of it, but I've got, you know,
- 28:16my buckets of, you know, my rice and my beans and I've got some water.
- 28:20Order, you have a couple of days to make those arrangements,
- 28:22whether it's putting it in your car and taking it to a friend's house that's
- 28:26out of that area or to a relative where maybe they can hold it for you.
- 28:31It's about kind of thinking, it's just, you always have to be just a little bit ahead.
- 28:36And I think that that's key. But awareness is the big thing.
- 28:40A lot of people get caught off guard and they shouldn't be.
- 28:45An example was when I was first moving to Georgia, I had to go back and forth
- 28:50to New York for a couple of times.
- 28:52And my first trip back, in fact, people wanted me to stay in Georgia because
- 28:55every time I showed up, I bought a horrible storm with me. One was a Nor'easter.
- 29:00The second time was Irene. And so I came up for Hurricane Irene.
- 29:03And the friend of mine was house sitting.
- 29:06This is after my first husband had passed. And I'm still working with everyone
- 29:10about what to do with this house.
- 29:12And I had a friend that was house sitting. And I'm booking up there because
- 29:16I'm like, oh my goodness, what's going on?
- 29:18I got to board up the house i gotta make sure everything's okay and he was like
- 29:22what storm and i'm like what do you mean what's you where have you been he knew
- 29:30nothing about it and when i told him i said it's a hurricane you know we don't
- 29:35get that much but when we do they they tend to they tend to suck,
- 29:39he was like he was just so meh about the whole thing like he did not care,
- 29:45So I pretty much had to take care of that by myself, but it just blew my mind.
- 29:49And I'm like, and this was a person that was constantly on his phone.
- 29:52That was constantly on social media.
- 29:56How do you, I just couldn't put that. It just blew my mind that he was that
- 30:00unaware and it was blissfully unaware.
- 30:03And that's dangerous. With all the information, all of the media that's out
- 30:07here, regardless of what you listen to, if it's going to be a disaster,
- 30:11there's going to be some sort of big weather event.
- 30:13Everybody's talking about it. so whether you've been through one or you've been
- 30:16through none or you've been through a hundred it was never a big deal you have
- 30:20to make choices and if you're responsible for children or animals,
- 30:24even you don't care you have to think about okay well what if it is the worst
- 30:28case how am i going to explain to my kid or you know comfort my animals if um
- 30:33i just didn't do the bare minimum,
- 30:36so the it can at least if someone says yeah a storm is coming pay attention because you may
- 30:42have to get up and get out so is your bug out bag ready can
- 30:45you make arrangements for the things that you've stored already you know
- 30:48can you throw it in the car and go you have a couple of
- 30:51days grace i mean sometimes you're just not going to have the warning you know
- 30:54wait but when you do you know be grateful that you have that notice and that
- 30:58you can make the arrangements because especially if you have pets you might
- 31:01not be able to take them with you you know some shelters will allow you to bring
- 31:04your animals some won't me i'll sleep in my car.
- 31:10You know you know they go where i go so you
- 31:14know if they can't go in then i'm not going to go in but you know
- 31:17it's those are the kind of things that you kind of have to have in your back your
- 31:20mind if i have to leave now what am i going to do with my critters you know
- 31:22what am i going to do with my stuff you know how much of this can i bring
- 31:26with me so if you
- 31:29have the notice then have a plan because you
- 31:31don't want to invest that time and money and then you
- 31:34you put yourself in a a position because you either
- 31:37didn't pay attention or you didn't take it seriously enough and now
- 31:40you can't you don't have the opportunity to save your
- 31:43stuff and i would say in regards
- 31:46to all that the best preparation is mental preparation
- 31:49you could have all the stuff all
- 31:52lined up everything you possibly need but if you
- 31:54don't have that mental preparation then you're just
- 31:57not going to survive and i think that's where our
- 32:00shows kind of intersect because i am a big i have
- 32:03a couple of entries um you know i forgot
- 32:07what the title is have my own stuff um prioritize prioritize
- 32:11to survive um and um
- 32:14more on the mindset tip because it is about mindset uh you don't have to turn
- 32:20into this obsessive doomsday prepper you know nihilist you know the bomb's gonna
- 32:25hit and yeah and god bless those guys because they have great you know they
- 32:29have great tips you know you You learn a lot from these folks,
- 32:31even if you might not agree on whatever scenario they're talking about or think
- 32:35that that's a little far out.
- 32:37But you just have to have in your mind, and it is something that I talk about,
- 32:44is first that it can't happen to you.
- 32:46There's too many people who walk around to like, I can't believe this happened to me. Why not?
- 32:51You know you're no better than the next guy so is it okay if it happened to
- 32:54somebody else i mean i think folks just have to get out of this this bad thing
- 33:00will never happen to me and yes it can,
- 33:02so and even regarding weather i mean
- 33:05as east coasters what's the worst thing that ever happened to us it got really cold
- 33:08yeah maybe every 10 years we'd get a hurricane and we had
- 33:11hurricane glory and remember what a big deal that was
- 33:13we never had a hurricane we're like oh my god tape
- 33:16the windows knows who has got who's got masking tape it
- 33:19was a whole thing because we weren't used to having hurricanes now
- 33:23we have them all the time not all the time but we have them more than we ever have we've
- 33:26had we have earthquakes now so all of these people that said oh well that's
- 33:30not something that happens to us because we live here you can't really say that
- 33:34anymore well so you have to have in your mind okay well it can it can happen
- 33:41here it can happen to me so that's the first thing,
- 33:45Then you have to think about, okay, well, based on my area, my area is more prone to what?
- 33:51Is it more prone to hurricanes? Is it more prone to flooding?
- 33:54Is it more prone to tornadoes?
- 33:56And going back to what you were asking earlier, Brittany, that's,
- 34:00you know, another angle to take when you first start prepping.
- 34:03What is my area as far as a natural disaster?
- 34:06What am I more prone to? Are you more prone to wildfires? fires.
- 34:09So you have to look at your area and say, okay, well, anything could happen
- 34:14at this point because right now it's a wild card for everyone.
- 34:16But if you're more prone to those hurricanes or those tornadoes,
- 34:19but you're in Kansas, you know, you're going to have to deal with a tornado
- 34:22before you'll deal with a hurricane.
- 34:23So you want to gear your prep towards that.
- 34:27I think it's, it's actually really important just to call out for the people
- 34:32who say that'll never happen to me or I'll never ever be in that situation.
- 34:37Four years ago in 2020, we were all kind of in the similar situation.
- 34:41I'll be honest. I was the first one.
- 34:45When it all started, I kind of shut myself out from it because I was like, that'll never happen.
- 34:52It's not going to come here. We're not going to have anything.
- 34:55And then I just remember standing in the parking garage at my job,
- 34:59getting a call from my son's school saying that it's going to be closed for two weeks.
- 35:03And I'm like, okay, now what do I do?
- 35:05And while everything kind of stopped for everybody else, I think looking back
- 35:12on it now, I definitely wasn't prepared for that.
- 35:17With the food, you know,
- 35:20Look at the shortage of toilet paper, how scarce that was. Like,
- 35:23I know that's something simple, but.
- 35:27No, it's not. It's definitely not as simple as people think.
- 35:31And I actually brought that up. One of the things, the entries that I had was,
- 35:35you know, is it stockpiling or is it hoarding?
- 35:38And that's exactly the example that I used.
- 35:42You know, stockpiling, I think, is what most preppers are trying to do.
- 35:45You want to make sure you're not stockpiling if you get extra something to make sure that you have.
- 35:50You are hoarding if you already have plenty of toilet paper,
- 35:53but you're going to make a run on BJ's and you're going to clean off the shelves.
- 35:57You have no place to put it, but you're making sure that nobody else gets in it.
- 36:01Or there were so many people who were caught off guard. And because there were
- 36:06so many shortages, you know, you couldn't get this, you couldn't get that.
- 36:09You can only get two or one or two of something.
- 36:12A lot of people really freaked out. So when the hysteria started about toilet
- 36:17paper, everybody's booking to the store.
- 36:19Oh, yeah. So it was a lot of that. I mean, I definitely did learn from that.
- 36:24I at least keep six rolls at all times. But to me, it's also similar to my gas tank.
- 36:32I never let that go under a quarter tank ever.
- 36:36Because, you know, for me, I guess I'm prepping it away every time I drive.
- 36:41I never know if we're going to have a snowstorm, if I'm going to get stuck somewhere,
- 36:47or if I'm going to have to sit in traffic for two, three hours idling when we've
- 36:53had some crazy hot weather,
- 36:55you can't just sit there in the heat.
- 36:57But I also keep a blanket, extra clothes, shoes.
- 37:02I don't have food in my car, but I keep all those extra items in my car in case
- 37:09something were to happen.
- 37:10So in a way, it, you know, listening to you, it's been an eye-opener,
- 37:16eye-opener society, but it's been an eye-opener because I'm like.
- 37:21There are all these things that I should be preparing for.
- 37:25And there are some that I do do, but especially as a single mom,
- 37:29something happens. My son depends on me and I can't change that.
- 37:34And so, and I live in an apartment complex.
- 37:37So being able to have like my own garden or things, but, you know,
- 37:42you shared tips like the Irish soap, like how to keep animals away and stuff.
- 37:46So next summer, one of the things I'm thinking about is growing a little garden
- 37:51on my deck area and being able to keep that stuff away.
- 37:56But that way I can be prepared if something were to happen.
- 38:01Kudos to you for putting stuff in your car. Yeah.
- 38:04That's a big deal. And I actually even said to the word, like you said,
- 38:09never let your car get below a quarter of a tank.
- 38:12You never know if you're going to get detoured. And it could be anything.
- 38:15Thing. It could be an emergency situation.
- 38:17It could be a live shooter situation. It could be a water main break.
- 38:21So aside from also address no more than one way to get to your house,
- 38:27never get below a quarter of a tank because if you're detoured,
- 38:31you don't know how long that detour is going to be, what happens if you get lost.
- 38:34And now you're stuck someplace you're unfamiliar with, with no gas.
- 38:38So if you don't feel safe, you can't even leave.
- 38:41So you might be able to call AAA or call a friend, but you've got to sit there and wait.
- 38:46So yeah, so you're definitely ahead of it. If there's a lot of people will run
- 38:50it till it's down on fumes and, or my favorite.
- 38:53Oh, I just run out of gas all the time.
- 38:57Girl no no because you'll
- 39:01go somewhere in the middle of the night and end up someplace that you don't want
- 39:03to be and you're by yourself and you don't have gas and lynn
- 39:07you spoke about this one of your recent and i really like this and it ties in
- 39:11with prepping but it's you know not exactly prepping but for single females
- 39:16you were talking about situational awareness and i thought it was the most important
- 39:20thing and i wish everybody would listen to that um it applies to to, I mean,
- 39:25not just single females, anybody's vulnerable to violence,
- 39:29you know, and if you are keeping just a quarter of a tank, and like you said,
- 39:34that can jeopardize your safety at some point.
- 39:37So it's that sort of situational awareness that we all need to start thinking
- 39:42about reading rooms, reading crowds,
- 39:46that person walking down the street coming towards you, friend,
- 39:49foe, we We need to trust our gut instincts and more so like I'm talking,
- 39:54you know, from a man's point of view, you know, even though I have to be that way too,
- 39:59but it's a lot different for single females because they think they're the most vulnerable.
- 40:05Sometimes they're not, you know, as some ladies are packing heat and good for
- 40:10them. I think that's fantastic.
- 40:12You know, I'm a big believer in that, but it doesn't work if you're not aware
- 40:19of your surroundings or just being, or having that situational awareness.
- 40:23And Lynn, I do, I applaud you for bringing that up and talking about that because
- 40:27beyond the prepping and all.
- 40:30That situational awareness, because when everything does collapse and you are
- 40:34prepared, you still need that situational awareness to get through and to actually
- 40:40use your skills and prepping that you've picked up on.
- 40:43Because if you're not aware of what's going on, that gunstock can help you.
- 40:46There's no weapon that will help you if you don't see the threat coming.
- 40:50I mean, no matter the situation, you can get surprised at any time with anything
- 40:54and not see it coming. I mean, unless you're Bruce Lee or, you know,
- 40:57Liam Neeson, and that's not even a real person.
- 41:01They're just, as regular people, you know, who are just learning self-defense
- 41:05and I don't care how well trained.
- 41:07And you think about how poor the shooting average is among cops.
- 41:11And these are people who are trained.
- 41:12You know, when they get in a stressful situation, they were like,
- 41:15what, 13% or something like that, 33%. It's not great. And these are people who are trained.
- 41:21So, you know, here you are just a regular person in the street and yes,
- 41:25you have a gun and yes, you know how to use it, but you have not trained most of us.
- 41:29I mean, you do have training for civilians and that's great.
- 41:33But you know, as regular folks, if you, that's your first line of defense is
- 41:39your being aware of your surroundings, that gun's not going to help you,
- 41:42that knife's not, that pepper spray is not going to help you.
- 41:45If you're not, if your head's not on a swivel, If you're not paying attention
- 41:49to the people who are there, because you're still going to get surprised and
- 41:51then you don't have time to get to that thing that you're depending on for protection.
- 41:56And that's key. And for women in particular, we've been taught that women have very strong intuition.
- 42:06There's a reason why the phrase women's intuition is a thing.
- 42:09It's because we have that.
- 42:11I don't know if it's because we bear children and we have to be more aware about them.
- 42:15I don't know. You know, I mean, that's someone with more education on it can
- 42:19explain, but it's something that we have.
- 42:21But as we get older and as we grow up, that's really kind of beat down on us
- 42:27that, you know, I don't like that person or I don't feel comfortable or I don't feel safe.
- 42:32Oh, you're just being hysterical. Oh, you're overreacting.
- 42:35Oh, you're being overly sensitive. And when we get trained out of listening
- 42:40to our gut and yet, like you said, you are the most vulnerable.
- 42:42It's not insulting. I mean, there's a reason a woman is attacked in this country every nine seconds.
- 42:47We were assaulted every nine seconds, not nine minutes, nine seconds.
- 42:51So we are a very vulnerable community and we're taught to.
- 42:57We're overreacting if something tells us that that inner bell is going off,
- 43:01we're taught to ignore it and then we're taught to be nice.
- 43:05Ted Bundy made his legend off of women.
- 43:09Not just telling, not just saying, no. You know, the same reason that you wouldn't
- 43:14walk up to that, you know, the guy with the van offering free candy.
- 43:17You know, as women, we're not, yeah, that guy who says he has a broken leg with
- 43:21that weird, no, I don't care. Yeah, he's cute, but no. Girl, no.
- 43:26Clang, clang, clang, clang, inner bell. Although a lot of his victims went to
- 43:31him because that alarm bell was just turned off.
- 43:36It's like, no, he can't possibly back. Oh, I don't want to be mean.
- 43:39He's like, he's going to kill you. Be mean.
- 43:42Say no. Walk away. And I think that that's just something that we have to get back in tune with.
- 43:51We have to be able to walk into a room or to an establishment and say,
- 43:55okay, well, I know how to get out of here.
- 43:56You know other than the way I came in um I
- 44:00don't like the crowd so I'm just gonna go uh
- 44:03we also have a tendency to overstay well it yeah I
- 44:07mean it was great when we came in and now it's not so great but I don't
- 44:10feel like leaving leave just go if something's telling you get out go you know
- 44:16you don't owe strangers anything you don't owe you really don't owe anybody
- 44:20anything you know you have to take care of yourself you have to keep yourself
- 44:24safe and especially if you're traveling with children or you have animals in your care,
- 44:28you have to take care of yourself.
- 44:30And if something is telling you that something's off or something doesn't feel right, then heed that.
- 44:36And someone's just, if they're going to be offended, let them be offended.
- 44:39But a lot of times, either people
- 44:41get it or they were a person who was justifying why you feel that way.
- 44:47And I think that's something specific to women that we have to reattune,
- 44:52if that's a word, that we have to get back in touch with and appreciate it because
- 44:57that's our, that's our first,
- 44:58you know, that's a built-in safety mechanism that we've been taught to kind
- 45:02of ignore or push or subdue.
- 45:07Suppress. Suppress. Thank you.
- 45:10Now, I think it's, that's a great point because I just went somewhere last weekend
- 45:15with somebody and I had never been there before, but the first thing I do is
- 45:19I always look for exits, it.
- 45:21Look to see, look at landmarks, try to piece everything together just to take a mental picture.
- 45:27Because unfortunately I've been in two situations where there is thought to
- 45:32be an active shooter and that's just not fun. And so I.
- 45:37And they made the comment to me, they're like, have you been here before? And I said, no.
- 45:42And they're like, well, you, you know where you're going. And I'm like,
- 45:45no, it's not that I know where I'm going.
- 45:47It's just that I always try to stay aware of my surroundings and know where
- 45:52the closest exit is or know how to get out.
- 45:55And when I get out, then I need to know which direction to go.
- 45:58Go so to me that's you know i i
- 46:01did let my guard down when i was married because you you
- 46:05know is the protector but now i
- 46:08have that guard up and i i really don't want to let that down again because
- 46:11it's so important in today's age because you never know what's going to happen
- 46:16wherever you go and and i think that's natural and i think as women and again
- 46:21i you know i was married um you get Yeah,
- 46:25and especially if you're the type of guy, like I said, my first husband was an Army guy.
- 46:30My second guy was a biker-type guy, 6'3", with the big, beautiful smile.
- 46:35But oof, when he wasn't smiling, it's like, is that guy a killer? Is he going to hurt me?
- 46:39He had a tough face, but hard gold.
- 46:43And it was easy to kind of be more relaxed because I'm like,
- 46:46anything pops off, he's totally got it. I don't have to sweat a thing.
- 46:50But especially these days, I think that you can have that sense of security
- 46:56and let him have that because, and I think men enjoy that and enjoy being the protector.
- 47:02And I know that brings up issues for single dating when we're so all over the
- 47:05thing, which of course I touched upon too, but you know, it's good to let them
- 47:09feel that, you know, you want to have that kind of dynamic where you're giving
- 47:12that other person what they need.
- 47:13And that makes a man feel good when he He feels that he can protect his family,
- 47:17but there's so much going on now.
- 47:20I think it's more important for couples, regardless of what the situation is,
- 47:27that they have each other's back.
- 47:30It's great to have that strong guy that's going to take care of everything,
- 47:33but I think everyone's head should be on a swivel because he's not going to
- 47:39be able to see everything.
- 47:41It's important for you to also be aware too.
- 47:44Always just keep your guard up because there's so much coming at us in different
- 47:48angles and in different ways.
- 47:50The more eyes you have on everything and the more aware you are of everything, it just helps the team.
- 47:55I always look at relationships as a partnership as opposed to a power dynamic.
- 48:00And I think having a partnership is more important than ever because,
- 48:04well, if you're in a couple, chances are both of you are working.
- 48:07You're both trying to make the ends meet. You're both trying to find a way to
- 48:11take care of the kids and the different responsibilities. possibilities.
- 48:15So yeah, so even if you're in some sort of couple situation,
- 48:19it's just, I think it's more important to be a partnership so that if you're
- 48:23prepping or if you're just trying to at least ensure that, you know,
- 48:26as you're moving into the future, that you have some sort of security in all
- 48:29levels that you need to work as a team.
- 48:32As a single person, I mean, you're doing it all.
- 48:36So yeah, so it's definitely good to say, you know what, it's just me and I need
- 48:39to definitely be more attuned to what's going on and pay attention and pay attention
- 48:44to the people that are around me and where I'm going.
- 48:46And the fact that you are paying attention to the areas you're going into and
- 48:50knowing how to get out and GPS, I mean, especially for women's a godsend,
- 48:54it is nothing better than saying, you know what? I have no idea where the hell I am.
- 48:58Where's my GPS? Get me out of here. Yeah.
- 49:02Because I wrote in there, when I grew up in, you want to get lost? Brooklyn. Brooklyn.
- 49:07If you don't know where you're going, get lost in Brooklyn because there's no numbers.
- 49:11Queens is crazy. You know, 112th Road, 112th Street, 112th Avenue.
- 49:17Yeah, you get used to that. But Brooklyn, everything was a name.
- 49:20So unless you were from the area, you really, you had no idea which way to go.
- 49:27It's like, okay, well, you know, in Queens or anyplace else,
- 49:30it's like, all right, the numbers are going down. So I know eventually I'm going
- 49:32to end up over here. Then you go to Brooklyn. It's like, man, I don't even know.
- 49:36And this is pre-GPS and I've gotten lost.
- 49:41And I've been fortunate that I haven't had anything. I've had a couple of scary
- 49:45situations, but I think that folks in general, I mean, bad things can happen
- 49:51to anybody when you get lost and you end up someplace you shouldn't be.
- 49:53But don't be scared of that GPS, you know, explore those different routes in
- 49:59and out of an area, different ways to get to and from your house.
- 50:02We can do that more, you know, in a safer manner now because of GPS.
- 50:08So I exploit that because I need to know how to get out of here.
- 50:12If there's a water main break, it is a detour, any sort of active shooting.
- 50:15You know, there's some places where there's only one way in or out.
- 50:18I mean, there's definitely some places like that, But if you're fortunate enough
- 50:22to where there's different ways to get where you need to go,
- 50:24try them because you may have to use them and you rather say,
- 50:27okay, I've been this way before they go, oh man, I don't even know where I'm at.
- 50:32I don't know how to get to where I'm going. I don't know how to turn to get towards my house.
- 50:37Those are the things that make you anxious. So a little bit of preparation will
- 50:41definitely relieve the anxiety of traveling and not always knowing where you're going.
