- 0:00Speaker 1: We doubt because we don't believe what the Lord has promised.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Look at verses six through eight.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Save therefore to the people of Israel, I am the Lord,
- 0:12Speaker 1: I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out. This
- 0:17Speaker 1: is framed by I am the Lord on the beginning
- 0:20Speaker 1: and the end. So he's going back to remind them
- 0:24Speaker 1: of who I am, that I'm God. By the way,
- 0:27Speaker 1: there's no other explanation needed than I am God.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Amen?
- 0:33Speaker 1: That's kind of like when your parents tell you something,
- 0:35Speaker 1: you go, why do I have to do that? Because
- 0:38Speaker 1: I told you so. Well, why do I have to
- 0:40Speaker 1: do what you tell me? Because I'm your daddy.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Well, uh-uh. That's enough. That's enough. I am the Lord.
- 0:57Speaker 2: That's enough.
- 0:58Speaker 1: He says it at the beginning. and the end but
- 1:02Speaker 1: in the middle again remember three times I am the
- 1:07Speaker 1: Lord and in the middle of that seven promises another
- 1:12Speaker 1: very important number in the scriptures look at those promises
- 1:18Speaker 1: I will bring you out from under the burden of
- 1:21Speaker 1: the Egyptians what's their worry you spoke to Pharaoh and
- 1:26Speaker 1: our burden got heavier I'm God I will bring you
- 1:31Speaker 1: out from under the burden of the Egyptians. Number two,
- 1:35Speaker 1: I will deliver you from slavery to them. Number three,
- 1:38Speaker 1: I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with
- 1:42Speaker 1: great acts of judgment. Number four, I will take you
- 1:47Speaker 1: to be my people. Number five, I will be your
- 1:51Speaker 1: God and you shall know that I am the Lord
- 1:53Speaker 1: your God who has brought you out from under the
- 1:56Speaker 1: burden of the Egyptians.
- 1:58Speaker 2: When I do it, you'll know I did it.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Number six, I will bring you into the land that
- 2:04Speaker 1: I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And
- 2:07Speaker 1: number seven, I will give it to you for a possession.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I'm not just going to bring you out. I'm going
- 2:15Speaker 1: to bring you in. I'm not just going to bring
- 2:19Speaker 1: you out and bring you in, but I'm going to
- 2:20Speaker 1: bring you out, take you as my own, be your
- 2:24Speaker 1: God uniquely, specifically, and bring you into this land that
- 2:30Speaker 1: I promised.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And how does he end it? I am Yahweh.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Why do we doubt? We doubt because we forget who
- 2:44Speaker 1: God is. Because if we remembered who God was, there
- 2:50Speaker 1: would be no room for doubt. We doubt because we
- 2:56Speaker 1: forget what God has done. Because if we remembered what
- 3:02Speaker 1: God has done, if we remembered God's covenant, if we
- 3:06Speaker 1: remembered God's redemption, again, where would there be room for doubt?
- 3:14Speaker 1: And then thirdly, again, we do. We forget what God
- 3:17Speaker 1: has promised. We forget that God is not done with us.
- 3:23Speaker 1: We forget that Jesus said, I go to prepare a
- 3:25Speaker 1: place for you.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Amen? That there is more ahead.
- 3:31Speaker 1: We forget that he's coming again to judge the living
- 3:34Speaker 1: and the dead and that he will make all things right.
- 3:37Speaker 1: We forget that. That's why we doubt because we forget that.
- 3:44Speaker 1: But lest we be flippant. And they go, oh yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 1: that's right. Yeah, all I have to do is just
- 3:49Speaker 1: have those facts. Look at what happens because they get
- 3:52Speaker 1: those facts. And they don't get those facts. They get
- 3:55Speaker 1: those facts from God. God says to Moses, I am
- 3:59Speaker 1: the Lord. And you're going to know me better than Abraham, Isaac,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and Jacob knew me. I'm revealing myself and my character
- 4:09Speaker 1: to you in ways that they couldn't even comprehend.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I'm God.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I'm God. You need to know me as God and
- 4:14Speaker 1: you won't doubt. Secondly, you need to remember what I've done.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Remember the covenant that I made. I'm the God who
- 4:20Speaker 1: made that covenant. I'm the one who came and got you.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You didn't come and get me, Moses. You were keeping
- 4:25Speaker 1: sheep on the other side of the mountain. I came
- 4:27Speaker 1: and got you. I made that bush burn. I got
- 4:30Speaker 1: your attention. You didn't get mine. Thirdly, tell the people
- 4:37Speaker 1: that this is what I'm going to do. And Moses
- 4:39Speaker 1: comes down armed with the word of God and armed
- 4:44Speaker 1: with the word of God.
- 4:45Speaker 2: The prophet of God speaks to the people.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Of God, this powerful word reminding them of who God is,
- 4:52Speaker 1: what he's done and what he's promised. And the people
- 4:55Speaker 1: of God respond. Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel,
- 4:59Speaker 1: but they did not listen to Moses because of their
- 5:03Speaker 1: broken spirit and harsh slavery. God spoke directly to Moses.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And Moses brought that word to the people. Because of
- 5:22Speaker 1: their broken spirit and because of their circumstances, they wouldn't
- 5:31Speaker 1: believe what Moses said. This heavy burden, this is real.
- 5:38Speaker 1: This is real. Your promise is not real right now, Moses. Pharaoh,
- 5:45Speaker 1: he's real. Your God is not real now, Moses. Your
- 5:52Speaker 1: God says he's going to do ABC and XYZ. Pharaoh
- 5:56Speaker 1: did what he was going to do. We got no straw, man.
- 6:02Speaker 1: This is real.
- 6:03Speaker 2: That's pie in the sky stuff.
- 6:05Speaker 1: This is real. My pain is real. My heartache is real.
- 6:10Speaker 1: My circumstances are real. My frustration is real. My fear
- 6:14Speaker 1: is real. And right now it's more real to me
- 6:18Speaker 1: than who you say God is and what you say
- 6:20Speaker 1: God has done and what you say God has promised.
- 6:23Speaker 1: That's you and me. That's where the rubber meets the road.
- 6:32Speaker 1: That's the real Christian life.
- 6:36Speaker 2: That's us.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And because we don't understand that this is the real
- 6:40Speaker 1: Christian life, here's what happens.
- 6:42Speaker 2: We get to that place and we think.
- 6:43Speaker 1: There's something wrong with us.
- 6:45Speaker 2: There's something wrong with me.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Because if there wasn't something wrong with me, I wouldn't
- 6:49Speaker 1: respond this way.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Listen, same thing's wrong with you that was wrong with them.
- 6:53Speaker 2: You're fallen. You're fallen.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And living in this world is difficult. Information and rebuke,
- 7:09Speaker 1: that's not enough. Granted, we need information. Granted, we need rebuke,
- 7:15Speaker 1: but that's not enough. We need the presence and power
- 7:18Speaker 1: of the Spirit of God in our lives. And we
- 7:21Speaker 1: need Him to act mercifully. And we also need to
- 7:27Speaker 1: be reminded. Israel would have to hear this same thing
- 7:32Speaker 1: again and again and again and again and again. Listen, saints,
- 7:38Speaker 1: don't think so much of yourself that you get frustrated
- 7:43Speaker 1: because you have to be reminded. That's arrogance. What's the matter,
- 7:50Speaker 1: fellow Christian? Oh, I'm just down. Why are you so down,
- 7:55Speaker 1: fellow Christian? Well, because something happened in my life and
- 7:58Speaker 1: I doubted again. Really, fellow Christian? Because Christians doubt things. Yes,
- 8:03Speaker 1: but I should be more mature than that by now.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I should be at a place in my life where
- 8:09Speaker 1: I stop right now. Are you saying, dear Christian, that
- 8:14Speaker 1: you should be at a place in your life where
- 8:16Speaker 1: you don't need to be reminded again and again and again?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Don't say that. First, let me read some things for you.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Romans 15, 15.
- 8:28Speaker 1: But on some points I have written to you very
- 8:32Speaker 1: boldly by way of reminder because of the grace given
- 8:36Speaker 1: me by God. 1 Corinthians 4, 17. This is why
- 8:40Speaker 1: I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in
- 8:43Speaker 1: the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ
- 8:48Speaker 1: as I teach them everywhere in every church. 1 Corinthians 15, 1.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I
- 8:56Speaker 1: preach to you, which you received, in which you stand.
- 8:59Speaker 1: 2 Corinthians 10, 7. Look at what is before your eyes.
- 9:04Speaker 1: If anyone is confident that he is Christ's, let him
- 9:08Speaker 1: remind himself that just as he is Christ's, so also
- 9:13Speaker 1: are we.
- 9:13Speaker 2: 2 Peter 1, 12 and 13.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Therefore, I intend always to remind you of these qualities.
- 9:17Speaker 1: 2 Peter 3. No, let me finish at 12 and 13.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Remind you of these qualities, though you know them and
- 9:31Speaker 1: are established in the truth that you have. I think
- 9:34Speaker 1: it right as long as I am in this body
- 9:38Speaker 1: to stir you up by way of reminder. 2 Peter 3, 1.
- 9:43Speaker 1: This is now the second letter that I am writing
- 9:46Speaker 1: to you, beloved. In both of them, I am stirring
- 9:50Speaker 1: up your sincere mind by way of reminder. And finally,
- 9:56Speaker 1: Jude 5. Now I want to remind you. you, although
- 10:01Speaker 1: you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a
- 10:05Speaker 1: people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those
- 10:09Speaker 1: who did not believe. Reminder, reminder, reminder. Why do we
- 10:20Speaker 1: need to sit under the ordinary means of grace every week.
- 10:26Speaker 2: In church?
- 10:28Speaker 1: Because we need to be reminded. Why do we need
- 10:34Speaker 1: to be reminded of the gospel? Because we forget faith
- 10:40Speaker 1: comes by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Why do we need to read the word regularly and
- 10:48Speaker 1: Pray the word regularly. Sing the word regularly. Why do
- 10:53Speaker 1: we need to come before the Lord's table week in
- 10:56Speaker 1: and week out? Because we need to be reminded again
- 11:01Speaker 1: and again and again. Because the yoke of your oppression
- 11:05Speaker 1: is a constant reminder. And you need the word of
- 11:08Speaker 1: God as a constant reminder. Because the difficulties that you
- 11:13Speaker 1: face every day are a reminder. And so you need
- 11:16Speaker 1: the word of God as a reminder. The hardness of
- 11:20Speaker 1: life is a reminder. And so you need the preaching
- 11:24Speaker 1: of the gospel as a reminder. The disappointment of your
- 11:29Speaker 1: sinfulness is a reminder.
- 11:32Speaker 2: So you need the majesty of Christ.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Put forth before you again and again and again as
- 11:37Speaker 1: a reminder. Christianity is not a class you take and pass.
- 11:47Speaker 2: It's your life.
- 11:48Speaker 1: It's your breath, your health, your strength, your everything. And
- 11:57Speaker 1: you must be reminded. I must be reminded. Because every
- 12:03Speaker 1: time difficulty smacks you or me in the face, our
- 12:07Speaker 1: natural tendency is not to remember who God is, what
- 12:10Speaker 1: he's done, and what he's promised. Our natural tendency is
- 12:15Speaker 1: to say, this is too much for me. I just
- 12:18Speaker 1: can't believe right now. This is why there's no such
- 12:23Speaker 1: thing as a Lone Ranger Christian. You can't do this
- 12:28Speaker 1: on your own. You weren't meant to do this on
- 12:31Speaker 1: your own. You're not capable of doing this.
- 12:35Speaker 2: On your own.
- 12:37Speaker 1: You need someone to remind you. You need to remind
- 12:40Speaker 1: yourself and you need to remind somebody else. Amazing things
- 12:45Speaker 1: happen when we remind other people of things.
- 12:50Speaker 2: This happens all the time.
- 12:51Speaker 1: One of the things, you know, as pastors, We talk
- 12:54Speaker 1: about all the time how, you know, you're sitting and
- 12:56Speaker 1: you're dealing with some situation and you're helping someone with
- 13:00Speaker 1: some situation and you're looking at these things objectively and
- 13:03Speaker 1: you're reminding these people of these things objectively. And all
- 13:06Speaker 1: of a sudden, in the middle of being the objective voice,
- 13:10Speaker 1: reminding people of these things, you go, you know, you're
- 13:13Speaker 1: doing really good. This is sometimes why we're talking to you.
- 13:15Speaker 1: You're doing really good talking to them.
- 13:19Speaker 2: That's awesome, man.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Where was all that stuff the other day? when you
- 13:26Speaker 1: had your own difficulties and your own doubts. You know
- 13:34Speaker 1: what that means? It is a blessing to be part
- 13:39Speaker 1: of the body, to have people remind us again and
- 13:43Speaker 1: again and again. It is a blessing when we gather
- 13:46Speaker 1: as believers to be reminded again and again and again.
- 13:49Speaker 1: But it is also a blessing to remind your brothers
- 13:53Speaker 1: and sisters in Christ because oftentimes you need to hear
- 13:57Speaker 1: those words fall out of your own mouth so that
- 14:05Speaker 1: you can remember why the wheels fell off. Why did
- 14:11Speaker 1: I say that thing I shouldn't have said?
- 14:15Speaker 2: Here's why. I wouldn't hold it onto this. Why did
- 14:19Speaker 2: I do that thing I shouldn't have done? Here's why.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Because I wasn't holding on to this. Why did I
- 14:26Speaker 2: act the way I shouldn't have acted? Here's why.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Because I wasn't holding on to this.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Who is God?
- 14:39Speaker 1: What has he done? What has he promised? My prayer
- 14:46Speaker 1: for you, for me, for all of us, is that
- 14:51Speaker 1: as we walk through the difficulties of our lives, and
- 14:56Speaker 1: our lives will be fraught with difficulties, that as we
- 15:00Speaker 1: face each one of them, we will ask ourselves, who
- 15:05Speaker 1: is God? What has he done? What has he promised?
- 15:14Speaker 1: I'm struggling with something right now. It's hurting me. What
- 15:18Speaker 1: do I need to do? You need to ask yourself,
- 15:20Speaker 1: who is God? What has he done? What has he promised?
- 15:26Speaker 1: I got some news that overwhelmed me. How do I
- 15:30Speaker 1: face it? You ask yourself, who is God? What has
- 15:33Speaker 1: he done?
- 15:34Speaker 2: What has he promised?
- 15:37Speaker 1: I've got a task in front of me that I
- 15:39Speaker 1: have no idea how I can accomplish.
- 15:42Speaker 2: What do I do?
- 15:43Speaker 1: You ask yourself, who is God? What has he done?
- 15:46Speaker 1: And what has he promised? And what happens when that
- 15:52Speaker 1: doesn't work? Rinse and repeat. It's just real easy to
- 16:07Speaker 1: get caught up in this idea of this Christianity that
- 16:13Speaker 1: makes us invincible. It's really easy to get caught up
- 16:17Speaker 1: in this kind of Christianity that never has a bad
- 16:21Speaker 1: day or at least never admits it. It's real easy
- 16:25Speaker 1: to get caught up in this Christian.
- 16:26Speaker 2: How are you?
- 16:27Speaker 1: I'm blessed and highly favored. And never answer the question with, man,
- 16:34Speaker 1: I'm struggling today. The problem with getting caught up in
- 16:43Speaker 1: that myth of Christianity is Is that it leaves you
- 16:49Speaker 1: nowhere to go in your dark days. But to your darkness.
- 16:55Speaker 1: You can't admit that you're struggling. You can't ask for
- 16:58Speaker 1: help when you're struggling. And you can't get out of
- 17:02Speaker 1: your struggle. Because all you have is your struggle. And
- 17:08Speaker 1: the idea that there's something wrong with you. Because you're
- 17:12Speaker 1: a Christian who's in the midst of a struggle. Let
- 17:17Speaker 1: that go.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Let that go.
- 17:22Speaker 1: And rejoice in the fact that God has given you
- 17:25Speaker 1: this one day in seven, that he has given you
- 17:28Speaker 1: your Bible, that he has given you your brothers and
- 17:30Speaker 1: sisters in Christ, and so much more in order to
- 17:35Speaker 1: remind you again and again and again and again. Why?
- 17:44Speaker 1: Because we need it. We need it. We need to
- 17:55Speaker 1: be reminded Christ died for sin once for all, the
- 18:00Speaker 1: just for the unjust, in order that he might bring
- 18:02Speaker 1: us back to God. We need to be reminded of that.
- 18:06Speaker 1: We need to be reminded that because we have come
- 18:09Speaker 1: to him in repentance and faith, That we are part
- 18:12Speaker 1: of the covenant people of God.
- 18:13Speaker 2: That we are saved.
- 18:15Speaker 1: And that we are in the process of being sanctified.
- 18:17Speaker 1: And we will one day be glorified. We need to
- 18:19Speaker 1: be reminded that Christ will. He who began a good
- 18:23Speaker 1: work in you is able and faithful to see it
- 18:26Speaker 1: through to completion. You need to be reminded of that, Christian.
- 18:36Speaker 1: And if you're not a Christian, you need to be
- 18:38Speaker 1: reminded of that. Because if you're not a Christian, that
- 18:41Speaker 1: means you're trusting in something other than the completed work
- 18:43Speaker 1: of Christ. And you're failing. And it's failing. And it's
- 18:50Speaker 1: not enough for you to just fail. You need to
- 18:53Speaker 1: be reminded over and over and over again why you're failing.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Because Christ is your only hope. Flee to him. Cling
- 19:03Speaker 1: to him. Trust in him. And nothing else. And don't
- 19:07Speaker 1: leave here another week. without embracing and walking
- 19:12Speaker 2: In that reality.
