- 0:09Speaker 1: Let's talk a's, shall we? Dallas Braydon joining us. We're
- 0:13Speaker 1: excited to chat with him. You can hear him on
- 0:14Speaker 1: as broadcasts also the pod Baseball is Dad, Dallas, Good.
- 0:18Speaker 2: To see you.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Let's start with the headliner. What do you have for
- 0:21Speaker 1: us on the a's right now? Do you think they
- 0:23Speaker 1: have a chance at the division.
- 0:26Speaker 3: As we see it right now where we sit at
- 0:27Speaker 3: top of the division right And I think you got
- 0:29Speaker 3: to say that with bita breath, why well, because we
- 0:31Speaker 3: understand that it's not a very strong division at this
- 0:34Speaker 3: point in time. Competitive sure, but is there a powerhouse
- 0:37Speaker 3: right now in the division that looks to take control
- 0:39Speaker 3: of it? Absolutely not. And so that's why you respect
- 0:43Speaker 3: the fact that you are where you are, and when
- 0:45Speaker 3: you start to assess how you've gotten there, it's been
- 0:47Speaker 3: really a mixed bag of results because you've had some
- 0:49Speaker 3: good starting pitching efforts, you've had some bumpy starting pitching efforts.
- 0:52Speaker 3: You've seen the bullpen show up and do well at times,
- 0:54Speaker 3: and you've seen the bullpen kind of collapse at times.
- 0:56Speaker 3: From an offensive perspective, I think what's most impressive about
- 1:00Speaker 3: what the athletics are doing right now is the fact
- 1:02Speaker 3: that they are a top of the division, albeit just
- 1:05Speaker 3: by a slim margin. You have not had some of
- 1:08Speaker 3: those stalwarts start to click and perform to the extent
- 1:11Speaker 3: that not only do they as individuals expect, but I
- 1:14Speaker 3: think the entire group would expect. Right, you haven't seen
- 1:16Speaker 3: Brent Rooker go on that huge tear like you're used
- 1:19Speaker 3: to seeing at times. Tyler Soderstrom, Lawrence Butler. These are
- 1:22Speaker 3: guys who are going to be mainstays in the middle
- 1:25Speaker 3: of this lineup, and they're just not quite who they
- 1:28Speaker 3: have been in the past. I always make sure that
- 1:32Speaker 3: we highlight a guy like Carlos Cortes, because when Brent
- 1:35Speaker 3: Brooker went down, it was Carlos Cortez who stepped up
- 1:39Speaker 3: and delivered and delivered in a massive way. And he
- 1:43Speaker 3: still continues to deliver. He's now getting the starts out
- 1:46Speaker 3: in right field, as opposed to Lawrence Butler, who again
- 1:49Speaker 3: is under contract and will be a part of this
- 1:52Speaker 3: team as they move into Las Vegas. Now, what you
- 1:55Speaker 3: need is you need guys like Carlos Cortez to step up.
- 1:58Speaker 3: You also incourage some injuries. You lost Max Munsey, who
- 2:01Speaker 3: was swinging the bat well, So what happens is zach
- 2:04Speaker 3: Geloff comes up, you lose Denzel Clark. Zach Geloff goes
- 2:07Speaker 3: and plays center field in the big leagues for the
- 2:09Speaker 3: first time and adjusted fairly quickly, fairly well. But he
- 2:13Speaker 3: slides over to third base. What does that do? That
- 2:15Speaker 3: frees up room for Henry Bolte, who at the time
- 2:17Speaker 3: of his call up had gone twelve for twelve in
- 2:20Speaker 3: triple A, twelve trips to the dish, twelve knocks in
- 2:24Speaker 3: a row. Kind of hard to do. So he swung
- 2:27Speaker 3: his way to the big leagues. And it's been a
- 2:28Speaker 3: combination of seeing these guys come up and implement it
- 2:31Speaker 3: into the lineup, not only born out of necessity, but
- 2:34Speaker 3: also as I mentioned, guys have performed their way into
- 2:37Speaker 3: the fold. So right now, I think, with what we
- 2:41Speaker 3: have on the horizon, which is Gage Jump just recently
- 2:44Speaker 3: called up to the big leagues, he will be on
- 2:47Speaker 3: the bump today. You're going to get a look at
- 2:50Speaker 3: what the future could hold. Unfortunately, Aaron Sabali, after last
- 2:54Speaker 3: night's outing undisclosed injury at this point in time, will
- 2:57Speaker 3: probably be making a trip to the injured list, as
- 2:59Speaker 3: Mark Caste mentioned, So you hope he's okay, because he
- 3:02Speaker 3: was honestly probably the most stable starter that we had
- 3:05Speaker 3: seen from start to finish. He was the guy who
- 3:07Speaker 3: got the team the first win of the season, got
- 3:09Speaker 3: the starting rotation their first win of the season. JT Ginn,
- 3:13Speaker 3: who had been performing well, was carrying a no hit
- 3:16Speaker 3: bid into the ninth inning and then back that up
- 3:19Speaker 3: with a bit of a clunker career high six walks.
- 3:21Speaker 3: So I think what you're taking away from this is
- 3:24Speaker 3: there's just been some inconsistency all around. But again, the
- 3:27Speaker 3: impressive part is that they are in first place in
- 3:30Speaker 3: their division with what I would consider a lot left
- 3:33Speaker 3: to be desired really in all phases of the game.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Okay, Dallas, do you think they can they can hang
- 3:39Speaker 4: on and win this division? Even Seattle, I want to say,
- 3:42Speaker 4: is going to figure it out at some point. Texas
- 3:43Speaker 4: is Houston, I don't think is very good. I think
- 3:46Speaker 4: this is gonna be a battle between the A's and Seattle.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Do you think that possibly, with all the things you're saying,
- 3:52Speaker 4: will the A's for once go out and get some
- 3:54Speaker 4: reinforcements at the trade deadline if there's a spot for them,
- 3:58Speaker 4: will they be willing to give up some of these
- 3:59Speaker 4: problems suspects to get some reinforcements to help them try
- 4:02Speaker 4: to win for the first time in a while.
- 4:06Speaker 3: It's a great question to Jay, and I think historically
- 4:08Speaker 3: what they have proven is, and you know this, both
- 4:10Speaker 3: you and Cratza both know, if we as a team,
- 4:13Speaker 3: if we as the unit in the room, are performing well,
- 4:16Speaker 3: you almost force the hand of the front office. Give
- 4:19Speaker 3: give us a reason, give us a reason to go
- 4:20Speaker 3: out and supplement you guys, give us a reason, just
- 4:23Speaker 3: strengthen our position. And what I want to believe is
- 4:26Speaker 3: that will be the case. And I have reasons to
- 4:29Speaker 3: believe from the past that that will be the case. Right,
- 4:32Speaker 3: I mean, this is a team if you remember years ago,
- 4:34Speaker 3: went out and brought in John Lester into the fold.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Albeit they said goodbye to the guy who was hitting
- 4:38Speaker 3: in the meat potatoes of the order, Yona Cesspitis. And
- 4:40Speaker 3: we can talk about how that went or did not
- 4:42Speaker 3: go all you want, but I think they have shown
- 4:45Speaker 3: in the past that if we are in a position
- 4:49Speaker 3: to make a move, to make a push, just show
- 4:51Speaker 3: us that we're in that position, and we will do that.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And so I think what you want to do is
- 4:56Speaker 3: you want to be able to take hold of the
- 4:58Speaker 3: division so that there's a real need and an obvious
- 5:02Speaker 3: need to strengthen that position, and you don't want to
- 5:05Speaker 3: look back. You don't want to have to continue to
- 5:06Speaker 3: adjust that rear view mirror. And who is it? Is
- 5:08Speaker 3: it the Mariners that are on our heels because obviously
- 5:10Speaker 3: the Mariner's in town right now. With just that what
- 5:13Speaker 3: one one and a half or whatever it is lead
- 5:14Speaker 3: in the division, like I said, very minimal, But I
- 5:16Speaker 3: do believe that this group has the ability, has the
- 5:20Speaker 3: ability to once they start to click, you're going to
- 5:23Speaker 3: see them take off. And I think that right there
- 5:25Speaker 3: is going to be their biggest addition is really guys
- 5:28Speaker 3: just starting to fire. Because when you have a third
- 5:31Speaker 3: of your lineup that has just sort of underperformed and
- 5:34Speaker 3: it's a big part of your lineup, and you're getting
- 5:36Speaker 3: the productivity from some role players that you did not
- 5:39Speaker 3: expect it from, that has to give you a little faith,
- 5:42Speaker 3: That has to give you a little hope and optimism
- 5:45Speaker 3: for what happens during the summer when those guys that
- 5:47Speaker 3: I mentioned do start to turn it on, because I
- 5:49Speaker 3: think they'll be able to create a little separation that
- 5:51Speaker 3: you just haven't quite seen yet.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Hey J gave me a line on blue Chew.

- 6:56Speaker 5: All right, Where's Where's that separation coming from on the mound, though,
- 7:01Speaker 5: where's that separation when when the heat of the summer,
- 7:04Speaker 5: when the ball really starts flying out of out of
- 7:06Speaker 5: I don't even know what it is, Suitter Park, Sutter Park,
- 7:10Speaker 5: but it is. It's it's not just going to help
- 7:13Speaker 5: these this lineup. It's not gonna help Lawrence Butler hit better.
- 7:15Speaker 5: It's not gonna help Brett Rooker get get hotter like
- 7:18Speaker 5: he normally is. It's tough to pitch there. And I'm
- 7:21Speaker 5: not even talking about reinforcements, because you have to win
- 7:23Speaker 5: with the core that you have there and the cores
- 7:25Speaker 5: in that lineup, this rotation. Is it good enough to
- 7:29Speaker 5: say we're going to go into a series against a
- 7:32Speaker 5: hot hitting team and shut them down or is the
- 7:35Speaker 5: belieguer not belieguer bullpen. But the fact that you lose
- 7:38Speaker 5: a guy like Mason Miller, Mason Miller at the end
- 7:40Speaker 5: of your bullpen from last year pushed through to this year,
- 7:44Speaker 5: and it just kind of is a little bit of
- 7:46Speaker 5: a lesser a lesser group than they could have had
- 7:51Speaker 5: had they not made the move to get rid of Mason.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Everybody likes to be able to build backwards from the
- 7:56Speaker 3: back end of the bullpen right gratch you when you
- 7:57Speaker 3: can account for Alt's twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven,
- 8:00Speaker 3: and it makes the job a little easier to start
- 8:02Speaker 3: deploying those guys who are going to be that bridge
- 8:04Speaker 3: and be the back end. And so it's understood you
- 8:06Speaker 3: don't have Mason Miller anymore. But what you do have
- 8:08Speaker 3: as a group that I think Mark Costse with all
- 8:10Speaker 3: due respect, has done a really good job of deploying
- 8:13Speaker 3: and in an admirable fashion. Because you don't have a
- 8:15Speaker 3: ton of horse power down there, and that's understood, you
- 8:18Speaker 3: need guys like Joel Koonel, who came up and was
- 8:21Speaker 3: outstanding in some closing roles. I mean, he's got four
- 8:24Speaker 3: saves under his belt. We've seen Mark Leider closed ball
- 8:26Speaker 3: games at the end. And I'm not telling you that
- 8:28Speaker 3: these guys are go to overpowering arms, that there's going
- 8:31Speaker 3: to be doors getting beat down to acquire at the
- 8:34Speaker 3: deadline should the a's be out of it. What I
- 8:35Speaker 3: am telling you is that everybody is going to have
- 8:38Speaker 3: to do their job. And we can talk about Sutter
- 8:41Speaker 3: Health Park just in the same breadth as we talk
- 8:43Speaker 3: about course Field, right. It is what it is, so
- 8:46Speaker 3: we can spend our time complaining about the yard, or
- 8:48Speaker 3: we can spend our time trying to figure out how
- 8:51Speaker 3: we are going to strategically maneuver our resources so that
- 8:54Speaker 3: gives us the best possible chance to get these outs.
- 8:57Speaker 3: And however that may be, whether it's matching up from
- 9:00Speaker 3: the fifth inning on which you hate to do, and
- 9:02Speaker 3: I should say the sixth inning on it, because if
- 9:03Speaker 3: you're squeezing, squeezing five innings were the juice out of
- 9:06Speaker 3: your starter I think this day and age, unfortunately, and
- 9:09Speaker 3: I think you two would agree with me, that's unfortunate.
- 9:12Speaker 3: That's not a great thing to be excited about, is
- 9:14Speaker 3: getting five innings from your starting pitcher. So I think
- 9:17Speaker 3: being able to squeeze as much as you can out
- 9:20Speaker 3: of that rotation, especially at home, is ideal because now
- 9:24Speaker 3: it just makes it easier to cover those nine to
- 9:26Speaker 3: twelve outs at the end of the ball game with
- 9:28Speaker 3: guys who you can match up against numerically and data wise.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And I think that's ultimately how that has to be done,
- 9:34Speaker 3: is if there's high swing and miss guys that are
- 9:36Speaker 3: coming up and guys who are able you can expand
- 9:40Speaker 3: the zone on. I mean we've got a guy like
- 9:41Speaker 3: Scott Barlow who's not going to overpower you eighty nine
- 9:43Speaker 3: to ninety one from the right side out of the bullpen.
- 9:46Speaker 3: I think of a lot of guys pitching in big
- 9:47Speaker 3: league bullpens today woke up with Scott Barlow stuff. They'd
- 9:51Speaker 3: start to try to figure out how to sell insurance.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Would they would be afraid to go out onto the mound.
- 9:55Speaker 3: And Scott Barlow has done a magnificent job with what
- 9:58Speaker 3: he's got, and he's a spin doc. He can spin it,
- 10:01Speaker 3: and he can spin it consistently, and he's found ways
- 10:04Speaker 3: to navigate. So you just want to take the lead,
- 10:06Speaker 3: I think, and take cues from guys like him who
- 10:08Speaker 3: go out and compete, because at the end of the day,
- 10:11Speaker 3: there's no iPad out there with you on the mound.
- 10:13Speaker 3: You have to figure out ways to get outs. Especially
- 10:15Speaker 3: it's Sutter Health Park where clearly it's a favorable condition
- 10:19Speaker 3: for hitters.
- 10:20Speaker 5: All right, watching I mean gauge gauge jump. Might be
- 10:24Speaker 5: he might be taking an iPad out there, because the
- 10:26Speaker 5: way the ball comes out of his arm is pretty
- 10:28Speaker 5: pretty legit. But is there an expectation that this guy
- 10:32Speaker 5: is going to do exactly what I was asking, like,
- 10:36Speaker 5: somebody that solidifies this rotation, or is this just a okay,
- 10:41Speaker 5: it's fine all the things you just said. If we
- 10:43Speaker 5: get five out of him, that's fine. Because he's a prospect,
- 10:45Speaker 5: we want to baby him. Or is this a we
- 10:48Speaker 5: hope he hits his hits the ground running and helps
- 10:52Speaker 5: take this rotation to be one of the top two
- 10:54Speaker 5: guys in the rotation by the end of the year.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Well, who would not hope that this dude comes up
- 10:59Speaker 3: and puts a stranglehold on one of these spots in
- 11:02Speaker 3: the rotation. Right there's a reason you're getting called up
- 11:04Speaker 3: to the big leagues, and it's because you have performed well.
- 11:07Speaker 3: And whether you want to call it a combination of
- 11:09Speaker 3: need and performance, I'm okay with that. But the fact that, look,
- 11:13Speaker 3: I've watched Gage jump very closely. I watched him all
- 11:16Speaker 3: of Big League camp this year when I was in camp,
- 11:18Speaker 3: I watched him last year. This is a dude who
- 11:21Speaker 3: gives you every reason to believe that once he starts
- 11:24Speaker 3: to get comfortable at this level, he will take off.
- 11:26Speaker 3: And I think that's why you put the responsibility on
- 11:29Speaker 3: his plate at this moment right now, is because it's
- 11:31Speaker 3: hey man, you have the ability to go up here
- 11:34Speaker 3: and not only get outs, but do so in dominant
- 11:36Speaker 3: fashion at times we need the help here. This is
- 11:39Speaker 3: what getting called up to the big leagues is all about. Now.
- 11:42Speaker 3: The tricky part is being able to manage that young player,
- 11:45Speaker 3: that young pitcher managed the responsibility of taking care of
- 11:48Speaker 3: him and also, and it results oriented business, go win
- 11:51Speaker 3: ball games. Because if we're talking about a pitch count
- 11:54Speaker 3: scenario where he's at eighty eight ninety pitches through five
- 11:58Speaker 3: and we feel like you could probably get him through six,
- 12:02Speaker 3: we're at home. That would help. What decision are we
- 12:06Speaker 3: making at that point in time. That's where it gets
- 12:08Speaker 3: a little tricky for the staff and for the front office,
- 12:10Speaker 3: because we understand it's a combination of those two bodies
- 12:12Speaker 3: that are going to be making those decisions. So with
- 12:14Speaker 3: that being said, there's no reason to believe that gauge
- 12:17Speaker 3: jump with his arsenal, with his stuff. I mean, I
- 12:19Speaker 3: love everything about the dude. He's a competitor. He's got
- 12:22Speaker 3: the low slot, high ride fastball, he can spin it,
- 12:24Speaker 3: he's got a change up that's been working like There's
- 12:26Speaker 3: a lot to like about what comes with gauge jump,
- 12:29Speaker 3: and I think right now the last test is just
- 12:31Speaker 3: to see what it looks like at the big league level. Unfortunately,
- 12:34Speaker 3: I think for a lot of people, they're saying, man,
- 12:36Speaker 3: is there somewhere else we could start him outside of
- 12:38Speaker 3: Cutter Health Park. You know what, there's gonna be a
- 12:40Speaker 3: point time in his career. He's got to pitch at
- 12:41Speaker 3: course field, like I said, And all you're gonna have
- 12:43Speaker 3: to do is focus on getting the guy in the
- 12:45Speaker 3: box out and forget about where the walls are, forget
- 12:47Speaker 3: about what sort of altitude you're at. You just you
- 12:49Speaker 3: got to.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Compete Dallas, the guy behind you. I think that's the
- 12:54Speaker 4: guy behind you in the picture, Nick Kurtz. Is everyone
- 12:56Speaker 4: just afraid to throw to him? Yeah?
- 12:58Speaker 5: Right there?
- 12:59Speaker 3: Yeah, yep, yeah, And it's okay.
- 13:01Speaker 4: It's I mean, everyone's just afraid to pitch him. I
- 13:03Speaker 4: mean he gets on base like three times a game.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Two of them are by walks, and then he usually
- 13:07Speaker 4: does damage on the other time. I mean, I haven't
- 13:09Speaker 4: seen anything like this in a long time. I mean,
- 13:11Speaker 4: his eye is that good or they just don't want
- 13:12Speaker 4: to throw him strike.
- 13:14Speaker 3: It's a combination of both. I think he's earned the
- 13:16Speaker 3: respect based on what he put together over the course
- 13:19Speaker 3: of his rookie year. We're talking about a dude who
- 13:20Speaker 3: twenty straight games right put the papers on him and
- 13:22Speaker 3: walked his way into the history books. And that's what's
- 13:25Speaker 3: most impressive about this young fella is it's a power
- 13:28Speaker 3: and patience combination that has resulted in what we're seeing
- 13:31Speaker 3: unfold right now, chasing Big Mac in terms of that
- 13:34Speaker 3: on base Street. And obviously macketts sixty eight games was
- 13:38Speaker 3: over the course of two seasons. So what we're seeing
- 13:41Speaker 3: from Nick Kurtz, and this is what we saw when
- 13:43Speaker 3: he first showed up to the big leagues, boys, is
- 13:45Speaker 3: there wasn't a ton of power present early on, but
- 13:48Speaker 3: what you saw him was work the baseball all around
- 13:51Speaker 3: the field, take his knocks, especially with guys in the
- 13:52Speaker 3: scoring position. He understood very early what the responsibility was
- 13:57Speaker 3: of him and where he was in the lineup. If
- 13:59Speaker 3: I've got guys on second and third less than two outs,
- 14:02Speaker 3: our three run homer, sexy. Absolutely, is that kind of
- 14:04Speaker 3: what the A's offense has been geared on for a
- 14:06Speaker 3: while now, Yes, it has, But when you have a
- 14:08Speaker 3: dude like that who knows that he can put the
- 14:11Speaker 3: ball in play hard somewhere, and it doesn't have to
- 14:13Speaker 3: be over the wall. You've watched him mature. I've watched
- 14:16Speaker 3: him mature right before my very eyes. It's tough to
- 14:18Speaker 3: think that you were going to see a guy who
- 14:20Speaker 3: was already so adept at the art of hitting take
- 14:23Speaker 3: a step the way he has. And I got to
- 14:25Speaker 3: give him a lot of credit because at the beginning
- 14:26Speaker 3: of the season, there was a hole that hitters or
- 14:29Speaker 3: there was a hole that pitchers were attacking, and he
- 14:31Speaker 3: was a little off balance. There was some adjustments he
- 14:34Speaker 3: made with his swing, and before you know it, he
- 14:36Speaker 3: started to click. And I'll be honest, we still haven't
- 14:38Speaker 3: really seen that big power run that we all know
- 14:41Speaker 3: he's capable of. But in lieu of that power, you
- 14:44Speaker 3: are watching him with an incredible, incredible display of plate discipline.
- 14:48Speaker 3: And again I always tell this story. I spoke with
- 14:51Speaker 3: Jim Tomby in Detroit a couple of years ago, I
- 14:55Speaker 3: think it was last year's rookie year, and Jim Tony,
- 14:58Speaker 3: for thirty minutes, referred to him as a slugger no
- 15:03Speaker 3: less than fifty eight times, And mister Toby looked at
- 15:06Speaker 3: me and was like Gallas. I was pretty good in
- 15:09Speaker 3: my day, right, Yes, sir, mister Toby, you were very good.
- 15:12Speaker 3: You were very good. And he said, I understood the
- 15:15Speaker 3: value of what it meant for me to go up
- 15:17Speaker 3: there and take my knocks, pound the ball the other
- 15:19Speaker 3: way and not worry about getting the head out going
- 15:21Speaker 3: pullside jumping ship because I wanted to feel good about it.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I knew what the team needed. I see this kid,
- 15:26Speaker 3: I see this in this kid, Dallas. He's going to
- 15:28Speaker 3: be a slugger in this league for a long time.
- 15:30Speaker 3: When Jim Tolmy, when Jim told me, lauds you like that,
- 15:34Speaker 3: you shut up, you listen, And I listened to every
- 15:35Speaker 3: single word that mister Tomy had to say. And I
- 15:38Speaker 3: have watched every bit of what he was looking at.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Come to fruition, Todfather, I'm a last minute guy.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Sometimes you're a last minute guy where you all of
- 15:48Speaker 1: a sudden see a night open up and you want
- 15:50Speaker 1: to go grab some tickets, and you hadn't gotten them already,
- 15:52Speaker 1: So you're gonna see geek and you're gonna go look
- 15:55Speaker 1: for a green dot and see where the good seats
- 15:57Speaker 1: are and the good value is.
- 15:59Speaker 2: And to have a little with the fam.
- 16:00Speaker 6: Right without a doubt, and I'm looking for some of
- 16:03Speaker 6: the best seats. I'm looking for that green dot. When
- 16:05Speaker 6: I get that. It's a simple plug it in, use
- 16:08Speaker 6: your hands, go right on your screen, your phone, whatever
- 16:12Speaker 6: platform you can get it on. And it's so simple.
- 16:15Speaker 6: They make it so easy for you to do. Even
- 16:18Speaker 6: my son can do it if I asked him, Hey, Blakester,
- 16:20Speaker 6: let's go man, get on there for us. Find us
- 16:22Speaker 6: a couple of seats so we can watch even that
- 16:25Speaker 6: Subway series. That would be fantastic. Seat Geek has it
- 16:28Speaker 6: all there for you.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and the code for you. You should know it.
- 16:31Speaker 1: It's Territory ten. It just gets you ten percent off
- 16:33Speaker 1: your next set of tickets. It's see ten percent off
- 16:35Speaker 1: any tickets with promo code Territory one zero. Make sure
- 16:39Speaker 1: you click the link in the description, download the app.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Then the code is automatically added to you account so
- 16:43Speaker 1: you can use it later.
- 16:44Speaker 5: All right, MVP talk was talked about with Shay Bangaliers. Now, yeah,
- 16:49Speaker 5: I get it. He hit a little bit of a slide.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Here's average slid all the way to like three hundred.
- 16:54Speaker 5: When he was hitting I think he was leading the
- 16:56Speaker 5: league for a little while, but has he taken a
- 16:59Speaker 5: next step in a change in an approach that got
- 17:03Speaker 5: him not just average but also as dingers. I think
- 17:06Speaker 5: he's got thirteen or fifteen now, whatever it is. Has
- 17:09Speaker 5: he changed it this year? And was there something in
- 17:12Speaker 5: this last little recent slide that couldn't make my MVP
- 17:16Speaker 5: candidate continue to slide the rest of the year.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Cratsy, our our MVP candidate. I'm gonna tell you right now,
- 17:25Speaker 3: from the mouth of from the mouth of Kurts to
- 17:28Speaker 3: my ears. I was talking to Curtsey at the beginning
- 17:31Speaker 3: of spring training probably we're probably two weeks into this,
- 17:33Speaker 3: and I looked at Curtsy. I said, that's different. That's
- 17:37Speaker 3: not just a nice run right now that I think
- 17:40Speaker 3: Langoliers is on. I'm watching a dude right now before
- 17:42Speaker 3: my very eyes just get better. He's come into camp
- 17:46Speaker 3: the last two years in better shape than he was
- 17:48Speaker 3: the year before, which is very impressive because Langoliers is
- 17:51Speaker 3: a very, very athletic individual, a very strong dude. We're
- 17:55Speaker 3: talking about one of the fastest guys in baseball, believe
- 17:58Speaker 3: it or not. Check the numbers. Fastest backstop in my
- 18:00Speaker 3: opinion by a large margin. This dude was faster than
- 18:03Speaker 3: Estuary Ruiz in his rookie year when SD broke the
- 18:06Speaker 3: rookie stolen base record. Check that. But for Langoliers, I
- 18:10Speaker 3: think the same thing that we saw with Kurtz. It's
- 18:12Speaker 3: about making the adjustments to the opposition. As the book
- 18:14Speaker 3: goes out on you and they start to peel back
- 18:17Speaker 3: the layers of who you are as a hitter, pitches
- 18:19Speaker 3: that you're getting to, incounts that you're getting to. It's
- 18:21Speaker 3: up to you now to start to be able to
- 18:23Speaker 3: regain some of that count leverage and understand where you're
- 18:26Speaker 3: going to be attacked and can I now expand and
- 18:29Speaker 3: can I go there? And I think Langoliers has shown
- 18:31Speaker 3: the ability to adjust now right now, it's a look,
- 18:34Speaker 3: it's a long season, and we understand what kind of
- 18:36Speaker 3: start he got off to, and there's going to be
- 18:38Speaker 3: I think with that kind of start, there's gonna be
- 18:40Speaker 3: some expected mild regression. I think that's where we're at.
- 18:42Speaker 3: But he just banged one out of the yard last night,
- 18:44Speaker 3: OPO backside in Gale force wins at the ballpark that
- 18:48Speaker 3: we're blowing in the opposite direction. I mean, it takes
- 18:50Speaker 3: a grown man to do what Shaye Langoliers has done
- 18:53Speaker 3: this year, And I have no reason to believe that
- 18:56Speaker 3: Shaye Lengliers won't continue to trend positively, even though it
- 19:00Speaker 3: might feel like it's gotten a little quiet here as
- 19:02Speaker 3: of late.
- 19:04Speaker 5: All Right, you saw Luis Castillo kind of get a
- 19:07Speaker 5: little angry, get actually really pissed off about the whole
- 19:10Speaker 5: piggyback situation from a former starting pitcher, Give me your
- 19:15Speaker 5: take on that scenario. One, how was handled? Two, what
- 19:20Speaker 5: you're talking about as a starting pitcher when that happens
- 19:23Speaker 5: to you or when this kind of stuff is brought up.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Well, there's a whole lot of context. I think that
- 19:28Speaker 3: we have to understand about this situation. First and foremost, One,
- 19:31Speaker 3: we're talking about a guy who, up until his first
- 19:34Speaker 3: outing out of the bullpen, had made two hundred and
- 19:36Speaker 3: fifty two appearances in the big leagues, each and every
- 19:40Speaker 3: one of them starts. Every time he touched the ball
- 19:43Speaker 3: in the big leagues, he was starting a baseball game.
- 19:46Speaker 3: So you're now going to tell that individual that things
- 19:48Speaker 3: are going to change a little bit. And we've got
- 19:51Speaker 3: a guy who's going to be starting before you. You're
- 19:53Speaker 3: going to be coming out of the bullpen. You have
- 19:55Speaker 3: now asked this individual who knows nothing but how to
- 19:58Speaker 3: prepare as a starter, to quickly figure out how he's
- 20:02Speaker 3: going to make those adjustments. That's I think the first
- 20:04Speaker 3: layer of context. The second layer of context is which
- 20:08Speaker 3: conversation was had with Castillo. Was it a definitive you
- 20:12Speaker 3: will be going four innings best case scenario, you're getting
- 20:16Speaker 3: four innings under your belt. I don't care if you
- 20:18Speaker 3: get through four innings on forty six pitches. Four innings
- 20:21Speaker 3: is what it's going to be. If that was the conversation,
- 20:24Speaker 3: then there is that understanding in the mind, and you
- 20:28Speaker 3: can be frustrated that you got through your four innings
- 20:31Speaker 3: as efficiently as he did. But when you're out of
- 20:34Speaker 3: the ballgame, you're out of the ballgame. Now. If that
- 20:37Speaker 3: wasn't clearly communicated and it was a four or five innings, hey,
- 20:40Speaker 3: we'd love to get four or five out of you.
- 20:43Speaker 3: If I'm Luis Castillo, I react the exact same way
- 20:47Speaker 3: he did, because if we're falling in love with the
- 20:50Speaker 3: metrics of the way that we have and we're allowing
- 20:52Speaker 3: those to steer the ship of decision, making his average
- 20:54Speaker 3: fastball velocity on both of the heaters, albeit minuscule, was
- 20:58Speaker 3: up in that fourth inning from where he's guarded his
- 21:00Speaker 3: first inning at So what do we pay attention to, boys?
- 21:03Speaker 3: We pay attention to two things, the baseball and the
- 21:06Speaker 3: other team. Those are pretty good indicators on how things
- 21:09Speaker 3: are going for the man on the mound. And if
- 21:10Speaker 3: you're not catching as many balls as you'd like, and
- 21:12Speaker 3: you're pitcher spending more time backing up third base than
- 21:15Speaker 3: he is on the bump, that's a problem. The baseball
- 21:18Speaker 3: and the other team have told you that things aren't
- 21:20Speaker 3: quite working out well. The ball was coming out as
- 21:22Speaker 3: clean as ever for Castillo last night. Six punch outs,
- 21:25Speaker 3: sixty seven percent first pitch strike. Rady was getting ahead.
- 21:28Speaker 3: There wasn't a whole lot that I didn't like about
- 21:31Speaker 3: what I was seeing from Castile. I talked about the
- 21:33Speaker 3: swings that the A's were taking. I talked about the
- 21:35Speaker 3: swings that they could not take and could not get
- 21:38Speaker 3: off via the deception. I mean, he was dotting glove
- 21:42Speaker 3: side two inches off, starting a ball coming back over
- 21:44Speaker 3: the black. They just couldn't pull the trigger. Castill was rolling,
- 21:48Speaker 3: and so for him to come into the dugout and
- 21:50Speaker 3: exude the emotion that he did. That's what led me
- 21:53Speaker 3: to believe that there might not have been a clear
- 21:56Speaker 3: conversation that was had with him. That four to five
- 21:59Speaker 3: inning conversation is what I think probably happened, and that's
- 22:02Speaker 3: why Castillo was lobbying in the moment to get back
- 22:05Speaker 3: out there on the mound. And I said, so as much,
- 22:08Speaker 3: Dan Wilson is not making those decisions all his own.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Let's be clear about that, because that fella understands how
- 22:14Speaker 3: important it is to have communication for a starting pitcher.
- 22:17Speaker 3: And whether or not we hear anything about how that
- 22:20Speaker 3: communication went, that remains to be seen. But if I
- 22:23Speaker 3: was Louis Castillo, I would have reacted the exact same way.
- 22:27Speaker 3: And let's not forget the other guy that came in,
- 22:30Speaker 3: Bryce Miller. This dude has made seventy six starts in
- 22:34Speaker 3: the big leagues prior to last night, so all he
- 22:38Speaker 3: knows is how to start baseball games. And he said
- 22:41Speaker 3: as much, it's not really ideal, it's not really comfortable.
- 22:43Speaker 3: I had to figure out a couple days before how
- 22:46Speaker 3: I was going to try to go about my preparation.
- 22:48Speaker 3: And that means everything from getting warm in the dugout
- 22:50Speaker 3: or excuse me getting warm in the clubhouse and going
- 22:52Speaker 3: through your pregame routine. There, I broke it down where
- 22:54Speaker 3: if you're somebody who's watching video on that day, when
- 22:57Speaker 3: and where do you have the opportunity to do so
- 22:59Speaker 3: while wile still maintaining your physical preparation getting out into
- 23:03Speaker 3: the bullpen. I was a guy who would play catch
- 23:05Speaker 3: a long toss on my start days, falulpol to foul pole.
- 23:09Speaker 3: He doesn't have that opportunity. There's a baseball game going on,
- 23:12Speaker 3: so he's now got to get hot in the bullpen.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Those are all just very different elements to the preparation
- 23:17Speaker 3: that I think you kind of dismiss, but you just
- 23:21Speaker 3: simply can't because that impacts the guy's ability to prepare mentally.
- 23:25Speaker 3: You're checking boxes throughout your preparation that allow you to
- 23:28Speaker 3: get comfortable with what you're about to go out and do.
- 23:31Speaker 3: And that's why it's a huge adjustment. And I felt
- 23:33Speaker 3: that with the dirt under the spikes of Luis Castile,
- 23:35Speaker 3: there was every reason to have clearly communicated to him
- 23:39Speaker 3: what was happening. And if it was a four to
- 23:41Speaker 3: five inning combo, damn it, give him the ball for
- 23:45Speaker 3: that fifth inning. How do we not. He hadn't had
- 23:47Speaker 3: a good start essentially until his first start of the season,
- 23:50Speaker 3: and you could argue his next best start came against
- 23:53Speaker 3: us the A's when we were in Seattle. It had
- 23:56Speaker 3: been few and far between, I mean seven point three
- 23:59Speaker 3: four er over eight starts. After his first start of
- 24:02Speaker 3: the season. He was looking looking for something to build
- 24:06Speaker 3: confidence on it. It was right there in front of him,
- 24:09Speaker 3: right there, in front of the whole dam organization.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you.
- 24:14Speaker 1: That's the fire, that's the finishing fire, right there, Dallas.
- 24:17Speaker 1: And that's why we wanted to ask you about it.
- 24:19Speaker 1: It's tricky, but man, you want to get Luis Castillo
- 24:22Speaker 1: rolling again.
- 24:23Speaker 2: This is a tough spot for him. Great insight. We
- 24:25Speaker 2: gotta jump, We got Colton Cows are waiting for us.
- 24:28Speaker 2: But you're the man, Dallas. Really appreciate it much more
- 24:30Speaker 2: from Dallas every day of course on ACV and then

- 25:34Speaker 1: That's m a ck w E L d o N
- 25:37Speaker 1: dot com code f o U L Hey for once,
- 25:44Speaker 1: We're going to start injury suck with a positive key.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Ke Hernandez is back and apparently he was pretty banged up.
- 25:52Speaker 1: So doctor La trash Neil La Trasho's one of the
- 25:55Speaker 1: main doctors really in baseball solve a lot of.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Medical issues for the players.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Said he couldn't believe key K played through the injury
- 26:04Speaker 1: that he had last year.
- 26:05Speaker 2: He said it was the worst that he's seen.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Of that kind. Key K was called up yesterday and
- 26:14Speaker 1: ella trash. He wanted Andrew Friedman to know it, so
- 26:18Speaker 1: he made him repeat it to let him know that
- 26:21Speaker 1: he better bring him back for this season because he
- 26:23Speaker 1: was playing through that for the team. So you never
- 26:26Speaker 1: know what's really going on, but that actually gives some
- 26:29Speaker 1: credence to you know, his performance in the regular season.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:34Speaker 4: He had a good game last night too. We had
- 26:35Speaker 4: a huge ovation. He just brings some different to the
- 26:38Speaker 4: table for that team. It's it's he brings an energy.
- 26:42Speaker 4: And again, I saw the Dodgers on Saturday and they
- 26:45Speaker 4: were talking about KEYK coming back and they were excited
- 26:48Speaker 4: and the fans are excited. He just he just it's
- 26:50Speaker 4: something he brings to that organization that they don't have.
- 26:53Speaker 4: And uh, he had a nice game last night. Welcome
- 26:56Speaker 4: back he K. It's it's I like watching KEYK play.
- 26:58Speaker 4: It's fun, it's energetic, he enjoys it. It's it's it's
- 27:02Speaker 4: it's it's fun to watch.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Yeah, he had offse's and elbow surgery basically right after
- 27:07Speaker 1: the World Series. There's another example of the player who
- 27:10Speaker 1: does not get much loved by the numbers anymore. But
- 27:14Speaker 1: if you watch the games, you're like, Okay, he brings
- 27:17Speaker 1: the energy.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And there's a timeliness component. Hm, there is. Not every
- 27:22Speaker 2: ab is traded the same.
- 27:23Speaker 4: It's just not don't tell don't tell people that. Yeah, no,
- 27:27Speaker 4: they'll tell people that the down nine nothing homer means
- 27:30Speaker 4: as much as the homer that Cole and cows are
- 27:32Speaker 4: at the last two games. Yep, because that that's not true.
- 27:36Speaker 5: What are you talking about, Scott? He's got a career
- 27:37Speaker 5: ninety one ops plus disgusting.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Why is he even out there exactly same page.
- 27:46Speaker 5: He's got so many he's got so many rings and
- 27:49Speaker 5: things that why Why did the Red Sox pay so
- 27:51Speaker 5: much for him? Why did you know? Because they they
- 27:54Speaker 5: saw there's something different. And I'm not saying you need
- 27:57Speaker 5: to be a try hard to be something different, but
- 28:01Speaker 5: a guy like Key k plays the game, puts himself
- 28:04Speaker 5: in situations that helps his team win, and maybe doesn't
- 28:10Speaker 5: necessarily get the stats that say, now could he have
- 28:13Speaker 5: not helped the team win and gotten his stats. I
- 28:15Speaker 5: can't say that either. But a winning player does what
- 28:19Speaker 5: it takes to be able to have success out there
- 28:22Speaker 5: for his team, and Key K does it the only
- 28:26Speaker 5: way he knows how. He's not trying to be somebody
- 28:28Speaker 5: he's not. He is just him and they love that energy.
- 28:31Speaker 5: And I think he will have a one year deal
- 28:34Speaker 5: until he's ready to be done with the Dodgers.
- 28:38Speaker 1: And also, while we're talking about doctor La Trash, so
- 28:42Speaker 1: we had Keith Meister on a couple of years ago
- 28:43Speaker 1: and it was one of the better interviews we did.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Will Carroll from Injury Territory, our injury show on the
- 28:49Speaker 1: FT Network had Doctor La Trash on for fascinating combo.
- 28:54Speaker 1: We'll give you a minute peek here and then I
- 28:56Speaker 1: encourage you to check it out at some point where
- 28:57Speaker 1: you got a long car ride or after the show.
- 29:01Speaker 2: It's a good one.
- 29:03Speaker 7: You know, baseball's been living in this cycle where elbows
- 29:07Speaker 7: either rest or break or they get rebuilt. When you
- 29:11Speaker 7: first saw the nanoscope, did you immediately think this could
- 29:15Speaker 7: change the whole intervention timeline?
- 29:19Speaker 8: Well, yeah, for certain things, I thought that this would
- 29:23Speaker 8: be a lot less traumatic that we could, especially with
- 29:28Speaker 8: procedures that the length of recovery was entirely dependent on
- 29:34Speaker 8: how much surgical trauma you you did. In other words,
- 29:40Speaker 8: you know, we weren't waiting for tissue that was torn
- 29:45Speaker 8: to heal after it's repaired, so you know, that takes
- 29:48Speaker 8: a you know, a certain amount of time that's pretty
- 29:51Speaker 8: well known, and so you know, but if you're not,
- 29:56Speaker 8: if you're not repairing tissue and you're simply taking things
- 30:02Speaker 8: out of a joint that shouldn't be there, then really
- 30:06Speaker 8: the length of time it takes to recover is mostly
- 30:10Speaker 8: related to the trauma that you that you uh, you know,
- 30:15Speaker 8: cause whenever you're you're doing the procedures. So so the
- 30:19Speaker 8: the smaller the instruments, the more delicate, and uh, the operation,
- 30:25Speaker 8: the you know, the I think it's going to be
- 30:27Speaker 8: directly related to improved cover recovery time.
- 30:31Speaker 2: So good stuff there.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Well, Carol does a great job, and he pops up
- 30:37Speaker 1: here when we've got injuries to cover Injury Territory hosted
- 30:40Speaker 1: by Will and he brings on i mean, the top docs,
- 30:43Speaker 1: the top injury experts, the whole deal. So check out
- 30:45Speaker 1: the show. But that's a really good interview to dive into.
- 30:49Speaker 1: And the concept here is you've got surgery. I mean,
- 30:51Speaker 1: you guys have been through this, not much, but surgery
- 30:54Speaker 1: arthroscopic surgery. Now it's like just a little needle and
- 30:58Speaker 1: a band aid essentially with the nano needle.
- 31:02Speaker 2: I'm exaggerating a little bit there.
- 31:03Speaker 4: I was already chucking off a mound.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he's back really soon.
- 31:08Speaker 1: That's probably gonna do what one or two rehab starts,
- 31:10Speaker 1: and then he'll be back when he's ready for rehab starts.
- 31:13Speaker 2: But that should be soon.
- 31:15Speaker 1: There was a time when we were like, oh, it
- 31:16Speaker 1: might not be till mid August. Then he gets the
- 31:18Speaker 1: nanoscope and we're like, uh, he's coming back in June.
- 31:22Speaker 5: There's not even nice stitches. You gotta wait. You gotta
- 31:25Speaker 5: wait a few days just to let the stitches heal,
- 31:27Speaker 5: because then you can't get you get an infection. So
- 31:29Speaker 5: every day that a pitcher doesn't pitch, it's two more
- 31:32Speaker 5: days on the back end. So the fact that you
- 31:35Speaker 5: don't have that is crazy. It's definitely a breakthrough. Nobody's
- 31:38Speaker 5: doing a nanoscope on a Tommy John surgery because you
- 31:41Speaker 5: have to let the ligament heel. But something like Scuball
- 31:43Speaker 5: had that's awesome.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and now Blake Snell has had it too.
- 31:49Speaker 9: The jump from Triple A to the big leagues is
- 31:51Speaker 9: never easy, but maybe it's a little bit easier if
- 31:53Speaker 9: you've been pitching in Las Vegas, which is one of
- 31:56Speaker 9: the most inhospitable places for a pitcher to pitch throw,
- 32:00Speaker 9: you know in there. Gage Jump is also made a
- 32:01Speaker 9: start there. But Gage Jump is coming up for the
- 32:04Speaker 9: A's has kind of made the adjustment. He had a
- 32:07Speaker 9: rough April, but a very good May pitching for Triple
- 32:11Speaker 9: A Las Vegas. Now he's coming up to the big leagues.
- 32:13Speaker 9: We are talking about one of the better pitching prospects
- 32:15Speaker 9: in the game. A left hander who can sit in
- 32:17Speaker 9: the mid nineties, can touch ninety eight ninety nine, and
- 32:20Speaker 9: has a pair of you can call it a sweeper,
- 32:22Speaker 9: you can call it a cutter or a gyro slider.
- 32:25Speaker 9: It gets a small, breaking power slider. He throws both
- 32:29Speaker 9: of those for strikes. He throws both of those a lot,
- 32:32Speaker 9: and it kind of gives hitters a variety of different
- 32:35Speaker 9: looks of change ups. Not as good, but it's usable.
- 32:38Speaker 9: But this is another pitcher to help kind of give
- 32:40Speaker 9: a boost to the A's. The A's had a very
- 32:43Speaker 9: intriguing top of their farm system coming into the year
- 32:46Speaker 9: thanks to Jump and Jamie Arnold. Here comes Jump to
- 32:49Speaker 9: the big leagues and hey, it's gonna be tough, but
- 32:51Speaker 9: it's not gonna be that much tougher maybe than pitching
- 32:53Speaker 9: in Las Vegas.
- 32:55Speaker 1: It's a good comp there from JJ Cooper, Right, haven't
- 32:59Speaker 1: we talked about how the minor league gap is getting
- 33:01Speaker 1: pretty large, But if you're coming out of one of
- 33:04Speaker 1: those parks, they might not feel as bad.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Yeah, but he's also going to place where the ball
- 33:08Speaker 4: flies too, and Utter Health Park whatever it's called, So
- 33:11Speaker 4: we'll see. Yeah, I mean there is a jump, There
- 33:14Speaker 4: is a learning curve. That's why most teams like their
- 33:19Speaker 4: Triple A to be close to where they play so
- 33:21Speaker 4: that they can get used to the conditions. And so
- 33:24Speaker 4: I mean Vegas to Sacramento will probably be pretty close
- 33:28Speaker 4: because the ball flies in both. So we'll see. You
- 33:30Speaker 4: wish the kid good luck and maybe us usually either
- 33:33Speaker 4: go really good or really bad.
- 33:34Speaker 5: Yep.
