- 0:00Speaker 1: What's being this hour with the war in Ukraine. Russia
- 0:02Speaker 1: has launched a major offensive overnight on the Ukrainian capital
- 0:06Speaker 1: of Kiev. At least eighteen people have died and dozens
- 0:09Speaker 1: more wounded in Moscow's latest strikes. The Kremlin is vowing
- 0:12Speaker 1: to ramp up pressure on Ukraine to achieve its goals. Earlier,
- 0:16Speaker 1: at the sight of an apartment building hit in last
- 0:18Speaker 1: night's attack, CBS News International reporter Aiden Stretch spoke with
- 0:22Speaker 1: Ukrainian President Voldemar Zelenski.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Listen, BBS News.
- 0:27Speaker 3: We've heard you ask repeatedly for more ballistic defenses from
- 0:31Speaker 3: the United States. You said yesterday that nearly half of
- 0:34Speaker 3: the missiles used were ballistic missiles. Have you received a
- 0:37Speaker 3: response from the United States for those asks?
- 0:41Speaker 2: No, We are.
- 0:41Speaker 4: Thankful for the program.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Thankful to.
- 0:46Speaker 4: European team. They paid for these and they paid already.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And now we have some packages of port.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and with Europe.
- 0:53Speaker 4: And Canada and other partners. And we're thankful to American
- 0:57Speaker 4: team for trans of these missiles. But for today it's
- 1:03Speaker 4: too slow, be honest, too slow. Of course, I count
- 1:07Speaker 4: on the meeting with the American team. During closest days.
- 1:12Speaker 1: We will see what will be.
- 1:13Speaker 4: We don't know what Putin will do and how will
- 1:17Speaker 4: be the all the plans of our meetings and certain
- 1:21Speaker 4: and etcetera. But what the most important And of course
- 1:26Speaker 4: we're asking President Trump his team. Yes, Rush, that's only
- 1:33Speaker 4: one thing, and we don't need you know too much words.
- 1:37Speaker 4: You see, what does it mean when the packages come
- 1:41Speaker 4: to Ukraine slowly? This is a big problem because these
- 1:45Speaker 4: people lost not only their apartments. This is a problem
- 1:49Speaker 4: to lose your whole, your house. They lost their children,
- 1:54Speaker 4: their families, their life. And I think this is the problem,
- 1:58Speaker 4: not the problem.
- 1:58Speaker 1: How to push All right, Aidan is joining us live
- 2:04Speaker 1: right now from Kiev. So Aiden, what more did President
- 2:09Speaker 1: Zelinsky tell you about what he hopes that what he
- 2:13Speaker 1: hopes can be achieved? Because at this point this war
- 2:16Speaker 1: in its third year, it's almost at a stalemate, even
- 2:20Speaker 1: though the Russians have made incourasions into Ukraine, and the
- 2:24Speaker 1: Ukrainians have been able to hit back in some of
- 2:26Speaker 1: the portions of Ukraine that are controlled by the Russians,
- 2:30Speaker 1: but the reality is three years on, there's no end
- 2:32Speaker 1: in sight.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Well that's right, but and I actually I asked him,
- 2:39Speaker 3: the question is Ukraine winning this war right now, and
- 2:43Speaker 3: he sort of looked at me as if that were
- 2:45Speaker 3: the wrong question to be asking. He said, what's most
- 2:48Speaker 3: important is he wants this war to end as quickly
- 2:50Speaker 3: as possible on terms that are okay for Ukraine after
- 2:53Speaker 3: all the fighting that they've done. But he's less concerned
- 2:56Speaker 3: with how people are measuring this war than getting out
- 2:58Speaker 3: of it as quickly as possible.
- 3:00Speaker 2: He said, he wants this war to end.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And he pointed to the building behind him where I'm
- 3:04Speaker 3: standing still right now and said, this is what war is.
- 3:07Speaker 3: None of us want this.
- 3:13Speaker 5: Oh sorry, and I thought you were going to a
- 3:15Speaker 5: SoundBite there. My apologies. I would disagree by the way.
- 3:18Speaker 5: I think you did ask the right question because I
- 3:20Speaker 5: think that is that you could tell that in that
- 3:22Speaker 5: moment he wasn't sure how to answer. And those are
- 3:25Speaker 5: the moments in reporting, especially in a place like this,
- 3:28Speaker 5: where we really want to hear that perspective. And so,
- 3:31Speaker 5: you know, we just a little bit talked about where
- 3:33Speaker 5: things go from here. Talk about the devastation though from
- 3:37Speaker 5: these attacks. You're on the ground, you're witnessing it, Describe
- 3:40Speaker 5: the scene.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yeah, So last night, I mean, I think what's important,
- 3:48Speaker 3: right now is maybe to just describe how these attacks
- 3:51Speaker 3: have changed, because it will make his answers make a
- 3:54Speaker 3: bit more sense. So earlier this year, when there were
- 3:57Speaker 3: attacks like last night, lots of drones, lots of missiles,
- 4:01Speaker 3: it basically sounded like tens hundreds of lawnmowers flying over
- 4:06Speaker 3: your head.
- 4:07Speaker 2: And that was because the.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Main things that we're getting through and hitting targets like
- 4:11Speaker 3: this were Iranian style shahead drones. These are the drones
- 4:15Speaker 3: that Russia uses for its long range attacks. But you
- 4:18Speaker 3: actually don't see those or hear those much anymore because
- 4:22Speaker 3: Ukraine has mounted an effective defense against them. But what
- 4:25Speaker 3: you do hear and feel, like we all did last night,
- 4:28Speaker 3: are ballistic missiles, which caused much bigger damage. And the
- 4:32Speaker 3: only defense against that that Ukraine has reliably been able
- 4:36Speaker 3: to use is American made Patriot air defense missiles. And
- 4:40Speaker 3: so that's why Bredon Lensky has stressed so much this
- 4:43Speaker 3: need for these missiles. And that's why when I asked
- 4:46Speaker 3: him that question, he was motioning and telling me, this
- 4:49Speaker 3: is what happens when some of that aid comes too slowly.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:54Speaker 1: So, aiden the other question that I have before we
- 4:56Speaker 1: let you go is in talking to the Ukrainian people.
- 5:02Speaker 1: It strikes me that the Russian military strategy has been
- 5:05Speaker 1: to do what they did last night, right to target
- 5:09Speaker 1: civilians in civilian areas, and the hope being that those
- 5:14Speaker 1: civilians enough civilian pressure will grow on Voldemir's Lensky so
- 5:17Speaker 1: that he capitulates. What are Ukrainian people telling you in
- 5:20Speaker 1: the wake of just another horrific attack by the Russians.
- 5:24Speaker 1: We've heard President Zelensky in the months and years past
- 5:29Speaker 1: say that Ukrainians will never give in to the Russians,
- 5:31Speaker 1: But what are people telling you on the ground.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I mean, I won't live that. It's like, it's raw,
- 5:40Speaker 2: it's emotional.
- 5:41Speaker 3: People have lost not only their homes, but we've seen
- 5:44Speaker 3: a number of bodies pulled.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Out of here. When you talk to people, they're very emotional.
- 5:49Speaker 3: They can barely speak about this, the folks that are here.
- 5:53Speaker 3: When I'm speaking people morely though, or I often what
- 5:58Speaker 3: are the beast terms that winked up in what they.
- 6:02Speaker 2: It's actually would be out on the streets all right.
- 6:09Speaker 1: We seem to be having a technical issue with Aiden's microphone,
- 6:12Speaker 1: as obviously he's in an active war zone and these
- 6:14Speaker 1: things happened but we thank him and his crew for
- 6:18Speaker 1: that crucial reporting and as you say, Kelly, that very
- 6:20Speaker 1: pointed question to President Zelensky, which as you say, did
- 6:23Speaker 1: have him pause for a moment, because in in in
- 6:28Speaker 1: that moment with the entire world watching, including the United States,
- 6:32Speaker 1: including NATO, including Europe.
- 6:34Speaker 2: And the Russians backdrop.
- 6:37Speaker 1: That he had to be very careful how he entered.
- 6:40Speaker 5: The marketing exactly. So aiden really appreciate that one morning
