  And when we're talking about a team that didn't just win, they

  dominated an entire era of tag team wrestling.

  Yes, paint spikes, intensity, A presence that felt more like war

  than a match. Tonight, we break down the
• 2:12
  history and the impact and legacy of one of the most iconic
• 2:14
  tag teams of all time. And this year's induction to the
• 2:17
  WWE Hall of Fame. Demolition.

  I'm not doing it alone. I got BP with me.

  So you already know we're about to go deep with this one.

  So let's get into ABJ on air #14 with the history of Demolition.

  And the thing that's really sad and we got to kick it off, we

  had to start a little earlier than we anticipated, you know,

  some scheduling stuff. So neither one of us had time to

  paint our faces. Yeah, which is a bummer.

  We are very lucky though, when it comes to this topic and this

  this thing because we got to work with Demolition on a random

  whim, show up at a show thinking you're going to do one thing and

  then get thrusted into hosting a fan meet and greet breakfast

  with Demolition, which was. Awesome, very fun.

  Yeah, it was awesome. The whole first half, it was

  really good because we were kind of like geeking out the whole
• 3:07
  time, like we're just going to win this.

  But we kind of just set the cameras up and we're like BP,

  Tommy Rich just said, I, I thanked him for doing another

  thing we filmed just to kind of show the vendors show off of

  what was going at the, at the convention.

  And he said, oh, thank you, brother, thank you.

  And he just hands me a picture, not of him of demolition that

  I'm only assuming he swiped off their table and now it's sitting

  on my wall. Yeah, I got a picture I bought.

  I got it from Paul BO1, time of the demolition autograph,

  because I didn't have one. I was like the whole day we were

  with them. We didn't ask him for a photo,

  We didn't ask him for autographs.

  We didn't do any of that. We just worked with them, asked
• 4:08
  him some questions, hung out with them, and then just left

  them alone. I was like, why didn't we get

  fucking picture? I did come back and privately

  geek out with with Smash about Repo Man because I am a noted.

  I think the only person that rivals my phantom of Repo Man is
• 4:24
  Matt Turner. We are the two biggest Repo Man
• 4:28
  fans in the world. And I got the talk very briefly
• 4:31
  with Smash about his his turn as Repo Man.
• 4:34
  But we're not here to talk about Repo Man.

  We're here to talk about demolition, which predated Repo
• 4:40
  Man and predated smashed, or at least that smashed Barry Darso.

  So we will also be covering a little bit of today's wrestling

  and talking about it at the end of the episode.

  And we'll let you guys jump in and talk and we'll interact with

  you guys in the chat. But we're going to get to the

  history of demolition and then the end acts of back and we'll

  be us talking about what's going on today.

  Because I know there's a lot of talk about a lot of news, a lot
• 5:03
  of past pay-per-view that happened, upcoming pay per views
• 5:06
  that are happening. So we'll we'll cover all that in
• 5:08
  a minute as well. So stay with us and enjoy the

  history of demolition. So you got to talk about the

  Road Warriors. If you're talking, look at you
• 5:17
  with the Genesee Cream Ale. My last one.

  My last one. You got to talk about the Road
• 5:24
  Warriors when you're talking about demolition, just because
• 5:29
  the the biggest sling and arrow that a lot of people will throw
• 5:33
  at demolition is that, oh, they were a Road Warriors RIP off.
• 5:36
  They were big guys in face paint that beat up people and were
• 5:41
  very rough and tumble and had studded leather all over the
• 5:43
  place. And they're actually based off
• 5:47
  of characters from the movie Road Warrior, Mad Max or
• 5:50
  whatever you want to say that that that franchise, they're
• 5:54
  actually based off of a character that another person
• 5:59
  that's going to the Hall of Fame this year was or the legacy
• 6:02
  Wing, Sid Vicious, Sid Udi. He portrayed a character, him
• 6:08
  and another guy, Jeff Van Camp, portrayed a character in Memphis
• 6:11
  called Lord Humongous, which was a direct RIP off of.
• 6:14
  I believe that's from Mad Max 2 Beyond Thunderdome.
• 6:17
  I was Lord Humongous and and it was very much the demolition
• 6:21
  look with the almost S&M looking, you know, leather and
• 6:25
  studs and I'll. Yeah, better workers.
• 6:30
  The road warriors are up there at the greatest tag teams of all
• 6:33
  time, I think. But I, I, I knew Demolition
• 6:37
  first. I discovered them both around
• 6:39
  the same time, like very early in my wrestling fandom.
• 6:41
  But I think they're unique enough that both can be
• 6:44
  appreciated. And yeah, incredible workers.
• 6:46
  And, and really, the bell to bell was not Animal or Hawk's
• 6:52
  strong suit. And Demolition could really go
• 6:54
  at that point. I mean, Bill Lady Axe had a
• 6:57
  entire career, an entire career before demolition.
• 7:05
  I mean, and and Barry Darso did do a degree as well, but not to
• 7:07
  the level of Axe. So Axe is a Mongol.
• 7:10
  I think he was, if I remember correctly, he I don't know if it
• 7:13
  was Bipo or ghetto. I know Nikolai Volkoff was one
• 7:16
  of them. The Mongols were A tag team like
• 7:17
  the 60s seventies. So he had that run and then he
• 7:20
  had a very good run, a very, very good run as the mass
• 7:26
  superstar. And he was they he was Bola
• 7:30
  Mongol. Excuse me, it was the one
• 7:31
  Mongol. I didn't mention Bola Mongol,
• 7:33
  but the Mass Superstar had a great run, not just in the WWF
• 7:37
  but top heel in a lot of different territories.
• 7:39
  And there's always been that urban legend.
• 7:42
  I don't know how true it is that when it came time to determine a
• 7:45
  transition champion to take the title from Bob Backlund to Hulk
• 7:50
  Hogan in 1984, that the final choices it was it was kind of
• 7:54
  narrowed down to it's either going to be the iron sheet, who
• 7:56
  it winds up being obviously, or the Mass Superstar.

  So Bill 80 factored in pretty heavily even before the
• 8:04
  Demolition thing, but the Mass Superstar gimmick is running its
• 8:08
  course. WWF is looking to add a new big
• 8:11
  heel tag team. So let's let's make our version
• 8:15
  of the Road Warriors. Let's take this Mad Max thing
• 8:18
  and make our own version of the Road Warriors.
• 8:20
  And we're going to call them Demolition.
• 8:21
  They're going to have the face paint.
• 8:22
  They're going to have everything we just talked about earlier.
• 8:26
  And so it's the Mass Superstar Billy, who is going to be Axe
• 8:29
  and Smash, who is part of another tag team that was around
• 8:33
  at the time, the Moon Dogs. He was moon dog Spot, I believe.
• 8:36
  Or no, wait, Moon Dog. I should have looked this up
• 8:39
  before he came here. Moon Dog Rex.
• 8:41
  No, he was not Moon Dog Spot. He was Moon Dog Rex.
• 8:45
  But the problem was while the masked superstar wore a mask,
• 8:51
  the moon Dog did not. The Moon Dog was out there with
• 8:57
  his face. So the first few times they show
• 8:59
  him, the crowd chants Moon Dog, Moon dog, Moon Dog and they're
• 9:04
  like, well, this isn't working. We got to get a new, we got to
• 9:06
  get a new smash. And this becomes an issue
• 9:10
  because Randy Collie, I guess who was the Moon Dog portray,
• 9:16
  help them kind of formulate some of the gimmick and it became a
• 9:18
  big legal thing. One of the things that it's
• 9:21
  constant through the history of demolition is litigation.
• 9:25
  Unfortunately, a lot of their, their story is called
• 9:28
  courtrooms. And that's, and I've seen some
• 9:30
  comments on YouTube and everything and, and a lot of
• 9:32
  people saying it's, it's, you know, it's a shame took this
• 9:36
  long to get them in the Hall of Fame.

  Well, there's a reason why and the reason why, Well, the big
• 9:41
  reason why is the guy who they don't talk about no more.

  I used to own the company forever and now he's not around.
• 9:49
  No, he's, he's definitely not around.

  Well I'm pretty sure he's not around.

  Just cause the product bad doesn't mean he's.

  OK. And so WWF recently brings the

  had recently brought in Crusher Khrushchev, who was part of a

  heel tag team or heel trio actually that was feuding quite
• 10:15
  frequently with the Road Warriors for Jim Crockett
• 10:17
  Promotions. He was a Russian sympathizer, an
• 10:21
  American who join forces with the call offs who were well, I
• 10:25
  was going to say we're who were also American, but Ivan's
• 10:28
  Canadian And so it was a thing where he's jumping and he's
• 10:33
  going to become the new smash. And it's funny because if you
• 10:36
  look at the first year demolition, you just see Barry
• 10:39
  first year and a half, really, you'll see Barry, Darso Crusher,
• 10:41
  Khrushchev's hair getting longer and longer and longer and
• 10:44
  longer. And if you want to go back in
• 10:46
  the archives of our content, the great thing about the Russians
• 10:50
  over there is you have Barry Darso and Crusher Krushchev,
• 10:54
  Smash, whatever you want to call him, and Nikita Koloff, who were
• 10:58
  both alumni of Robbinsdale High in Robbinsdale, MN.

  One of the two of the many who all kind of grew up together,
• 11:08
  grew up in the same neighborhood and wound up teaming together as
• 11:11
  evil Russians. And then one of them left to
• 11:13
  become Smash from Demolition. And initially the paint scheme
• 11:17
  wasn't quite there. And their manager was Johnny
• 11:20
  Vallian. And it wasn't a perfect fit.
• 11:23
  And they were just like this heel tag team that was steadily
• 11:27
  coming up through the ranks from WrestleMania 3 toward
• 11:30
  WrestleMania 4. But like a lot of things, it
• 11:33
  just takes a while for everything to come together
• 11:36
  like, and that's something I know this is I I saw this is
• 11:40
  something you would actually put out something about today.
• 11:43
  The girl in Evolve. I forget her name now.
• 11:46
  I don't know her new WE name but it's Arkademia.
• 11:50
  Yeah, was her indie. Her indie character, Yeah.
• 11:54
  Like give people time to find their swing.
• 11:59
  It takes time. It it it takes time and.

  Especially in a system where you are being told the character
• 12:06
  you're going to play and it's not necessarily the one you've
• 12:08
  chosen and you have to find it. It's just like, like they don't
• 12:12
  have time to to practice it backstage and then see if it
• 12:15
  works in front of a crowd. They're finding it week to week
• 12:17
  to week in front of a crowd. And now on television, where you
• 12:21
  have even less time to figure things out because you don't
• 12:23
  have. I mean, they do house shows and
• 12:25
  stuff like that, but house shows aren't the same.
• 12:27
  Yeah. The house shows are the same as
• 12:29
  like, yeah, but like, if you're on the indie scene and you're
• 12:35
  the shark for 35 years and you're over as the shark, and
• 12:38
  then you come to WWE and then they turn you into the monkey.
• 12:41
  Like, you got to relearn how to play the character.
• 12:44
  And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
• 12:47
  The opposite happened for Don Tente.
• 12:48
  He became the shark and he had to get a tiger tattoo on his on
• 12:52
  his arm transformed into a shark.
• 12:54
  Yeah. But that's that's that's a
• 12:57
  completely different story for a completely different time.
• 12:59
  So Demolition really starts to round in the form in late 87, in
• 13:05
  the early 88. And like a lot of cool deals,
• 13:08
  they're starting to get some some fans that are behind them.
• 13:11
  And their big crowning moment is going to happen at WrestleMania
• 13:14
  4. Actually just rewatched
• 13:15
  WrestleMania 4 not that long ago.
• 13:17
  By this time, John Johnny Vallion has kind of been phased
• 13:20
  out as a manager and they're now with Mr. Fuji.
• 13:25
  And that is the classic demolition pairing demolition
• 13:27
  either with or fighting against Mr. Fuji.
• 13:30
  That is, that is as demolition as it gets.
• 13:34
  And their promos are getting better.
• 13:35
  Axe is not not to discount Smash.
• 13:40
  Mr. Fuji was never really known for his promos.
• 13:42
  Axe is just an incredible promo. If you watch some of these.
• 13:45
  I just got this. I can't do it because my voice
• 13:47
  my my throat's a little sore, but he's got this gravelly
• 13:49
  voice. He's talking about kicking your
• 13:51
  stinking teeth in and we're going to get the belts.
• 13:54
  And he doesn't say championships.
• 13:55
  It's not micromanaged like it became.

  He is just so gruff that you just look at this guy like this
• 14:01
  guy's a tough guy. This is a guy that like punches
• 14:04
  the clock and then goes and punches somebody at the bar, you
• 14:07
  know, three nights a week. And it just translates so well.

  It just translates so well. And then at WrestleMania 4, they
• 14:17
  wind up beating Strikeforce for the for the WWF tag team titles.

  And that kicks off a reign that for a long time, we're talking
• 14:24
  until the New Day was the longest WWF title reign of all
• 14:29
  time. That initial reign they had was
• 14:32
  off the charts. Just they'd had tag teams that
• 14:37
  were over before, like they had had the US Express.
• 14:40
  They were very big for a moment. They had the British Bulldogs
• 14:43
  and they were very, very big for a moment.
• 14:45
  They all have their moments, but Demolition kind of hit like I
• 14:51
  don't think anybody else really had up until that point.
• 14:54
  Yeah. And it gets to the point where
• 14:57
  by the end of the year, by the end of 1988, it's like, you
• 15:00
  know, they're getting a little bit too much of a good response.

  They're getting, they're getting more cheers and boos.

  Even though they have Fuji, even though they're heels.

  They put them in in the first Summer Slam with the Heart
• 15:11
  Foundation, who had just turned babyface.
• 15:13
  But coming up the card coming again over from Crockett is
• 15:16
  another tag team, the Powers of Pain, the Warlord, the
• 15:19
  Barbarian, and they're even more like the Road Warriors and
• 15:22
  Demolition. And they're coming off of the
• 15:23
  few with the Road Warriors of Crockett, too.
• 15:26
  And they're, they're more of the typical WWE version of the
• 15:31
  muscles on top of muscles. You know, you would, you know,
• 15:34
  you would allege. Maybe they got some candies from
• 15:37
  Doctor Zohorian, Who knows. Got them under.

  Oh, Speaking of the bleachers they took, I heard they took the
• 15:42
  bleachers out of the Hamburg Field house did.

  It hasn't moved to Thanksgiving eve or just some random Saturday

  do the old double turn where Mr. Fuji turns on Demolition helps

  the powers of pain win the tag team Survivor Series match.

  And now, now we're really going to go full force and demolition

  being baby faces, Mr. Fuji, you know, basically tortured us and
• 16:53
  beat us and, you know, did all these things and now he's doing
• 16:56
  it to the powers of pain. But we don't need that.

  We we got the belts. We're the chance.

  And it really carries off into another big thing at the next
• 17:04
  WrestleMania, WrestleMania 5 again in Atlantic City at
• 17:06
  WrestleMania. I'm really sentimental about

  because this is the this is like the perfect time for me.

  I'm getting in the wrestling at this point.

  I'm like 5 years old and I'm just any wrestling I can find.

  I'm trying to absorb and it's a handicap match.

  It it might be the I'm trying to think if it's the first handicap

  match ever at WrestleMania maybe.

  And it's Mr. Fuji and the powers of pain against Demolition for

  the tag team title. So it's three on two, but it's

  also like the most easily telegraphed finish ever where

  Demolition's going to pin Fuji, Of course they are.

  But as we've had a through line here, the next step is going to

  be we've got somebody from Crockett coming in and they're

  going to they're going to go right after Demolition.

  But now Demolition are baby faces and the heels are going to
• 17:54
  be going up against who actually beat Strikeforce at WrestleMania

  5 are the Brain Busters. Now we're moving on the Bobby

  Heenan and he's got ARN Anderson and Tully Blanchard and
• 18:06
  Demolition always did well with teams.

  They they could kind of play against their type.
• 18:10
  Like they had really good matches with the Rockers, who
• 18:13
  didn't. They had really good matches
• 18:14
  with the Hearts who didn't. And they had some great stuff
• 18:17
  with the Brain Busters too. And that story, the year plus
• 18:21
  long, almost year and a half tag team title reign comes to an end
• 18:25
  against the Brain Busters. And before that, it was before
• 18:33
  that was actually the twin towers.

  Everybody kind of thought it was going to be boss man of Hakeem
• 18:37
  that was going to wind up doing that.

  But that's the brain Busters. They they kind of go back and

  forth. But the the tricky thing is

  that. Ric Flair is so someone someone

  commented, oh, I just messed it all up.

  be the 89 Survivor Series was the Rockers, I think Warrior

  titles to Haku and Andre the Giant.
