- 0:42SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.

- 0:46SPEAKER_03: We can't thank you enough for me with us taking the time, man.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: We're so excited for everybody community.

- 0:53SPEAKER_03: Yes, sir.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: We're excited to talk to you, man.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: The first question that we have is for people who don't know who Jermaine Johnson is, um, who are you beyond the politician?
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: It's it's interesting that uh that I'm actually running for governor right now, man, because it's it's it's crazy because I most people who know me, they knew I was a basketball player.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Like I was a I was an athlete, man.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So now that I'm running for governor, it's like I meet a bunch of people who only know me from politics, they don't know me from basketball.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: So, but I played basketball all of my life, man.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I played the Caleb Charleston, I played professional, I played in the NBA D League, I played in Brazil, Canada, Portugal, and Mexico.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I was a real line hooper.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: I was a real line hooper, man.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I was a real line hooper, man.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Check it up, nigga.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: I was a real line hooper.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: That's the that's probably the whole thing.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: I tell everybody you can't channel me no basketball, man.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: He don't want to smoke, bro.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: He don't want to smoke.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I'm a real line hoover, man.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: But you know, but you know, the basketball, my basketball life actually prepared me for life after uh in terms of being inside of politics because I've always been the leader of the basketball teams, I've been the captains and that type of stuff.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And uh being the individual who was always interviewed on the cameras and that type of stuff, speaking with my team, and just kind of prepare me for this moment right now with me, with leading the competitive nature, working together, unity, you know, that type of thing.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Uh and I got into politics, man, to help people out, but that's good, that's good.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: I wish I wish I could play basketball.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: I got a lot of gifts.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: I can sing, cook, all the things.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: But basketball might do that's an album.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: You got the bumps out of the song, man, man.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, yes, sir.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: When it comes to like, you know, crisis with money and whatnot, um, what can you do to make life more less expensive in South Carolina?
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: So, this is the issue that we have in South Carolina.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, the affordability crisis is crazy right now, right?
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Like, people can't afford to live here.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: So, South Carolina, we brag about being one of the top places in the country with like uh one way you can haul destination, right?
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Like, we're the fastest growing state in the country, right?
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: They say that.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: But what they're not saying is the fact that we are also top five places in the country where people leave in South Carolina, right?
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So young people are leaving South Carolina in droves because they're looking for other opportunities because they can't afford to live here, right?
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So that's the issue that we have to solve here.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: One of the ways that we need to solve that is by doing more affordable housing.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Affordable housing will then assist individuals with getting their first-time houses here.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Because also in that issue we have to tackle these insurance carriers.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Insurance carriers in South Carolina do better here than any other state in the country.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: So, what that means is the fact that they are driving up the cost.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: So even if you can afford your home, let's say you want to go buy a house and you can afford to buy the house, if you can't afford the insurance, you can't afford a house.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: So we have to make it so we gotta hold these insurance carriers accountable.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Uh force them to bring down the premiums for this for this insurance so that you can actually afford to stay in your home.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, I know some of y'all probably haven't been in an accident in your car in 20 years, but what happens?
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Every year they raise your premium.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: And you ain't been in no accident, they keep raising up your costs.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: We cannot allow that to continue to happen here.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: So we gotta make sure we're holding these insurance carriers accountable, making sure that we are taking care of people and allowing them to have an opportunity to get into home ownership.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna touch on a few different topics uh money, finances, uh, education, mental health, stuff like that.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: So just transitioning to the education aspect, you know, I got a college degree, and it seems like things are really like changing and like transforming to where it's like the college degree don't really hold too much weight, you know.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: I know I got a four-year degree, I don't even use it.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: I still got them student loans.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: We talk about that.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: But uh education-wise, you know, just what are you seeing um from an issue standpoint in a public school setting?
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Like, how can we fix education in a whole because you know, most most South Carolina um residents are gonna go through a public education system, so how can we fix the issues that that arise in there?
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we are 43rd in public education in the country.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Out of 50.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: 43rd out of 50.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: We are 43rd.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: That is a problem.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Y'all, there was a time where we used to be able to say, thank God for Mississippi.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Because Mississippi was always lower than us.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Mississippi is now the top 10 in public education, and we are still at the bottom.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: It's because we are never we have never fully funded public education in this state.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: So we have to actually fully fund public education, but not just throw more money at the problem.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: We have to solve the problem.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: The problem that what we have right now, there are some districts in this state that will then create a position in the administration for their friends, hire the friend, the friend getting six figures, and they ain't doing they're not really doing no work.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: We need to do that.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: They call it nebotism, they call it, and just pass it down.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: It's all it's happening in districts all around the state, so we have to fix that problem.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: So I'm what I'm proposing a full-on public education audit where we look at rural well-performing schools and compare them with rural poor performance schools, urban well-performance schools, compare them with urban poor performance schools, support uh support staff, administration overhead, teacher salaries, and then we get all that data and we come up with the best practices from there.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: In addition, I've already met the lady who was responsible for overhauling Mississippi's public education system, and I've already told her when I'm the governor, I want her to come to South Carolina and help us also redevelop our public education system here in South Carolina.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna get this thing fixed.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: Nah, I like that.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna tell you one reason we struggle in South Carolina right now for education.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Wait, expell Mississippi right now.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: I can't explain Mississippi.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: There we go.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: All right, here we go, Johnny.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: David Banner?
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, cooking letter, cooking letter.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Come on, I'm putting you on the splendid.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna put you on the spelling.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: Come on, man.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:24unknown: Come on, man.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: That is hilarious.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: So when we roll over into So um we want to talk about mental health a little bit.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Um is there is there a real solution and um what do you plan on actually doing to improve um the quality of mental health?
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Well, the first thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna look directly in this camera because I truly believe it is important for people like me with the platform to say this.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Most definitely.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: It is okay for you to have Jesus and a therapist.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: I've got to say that to the camera.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Because the worst thing that happened to the black community in particular is that we told everybody to just pray it away.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Just pray it away, just pray it away.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: But listen, God told you to have faith, but he said faith without works is dead.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: So he prepared, he prepared people all around this country to be able to help us, to give us the assistance.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And it is our it is our duty to go get the assistance, to go get prepared, to go make sure we are whole and we are healthy for because we have to make sure that we are taking care of ourselves before we can take care of somebody else.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: So I have a therapist myself that I see, uh, and I talk about mental health all over the state because uh a few years ago I did a statewide tour with a bunch of former gang members, an organization called Gangs of Peace.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: And we went to 30 different counties, and every single county said the exact same thing what they needed.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: They said every single county said we needed more access to mental health resources.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Every county said the exact same thing.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: So we need to actually fully uh invest in mental health, but we need to treat mental health just how we treat health.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: So what we're gonna do is we're gonna expand Medicaid in the state.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Once we expand Medicaid, we'll treat mental health just how we treat health to allow people to get the care that they need exactly where they're going with their primary care doctor.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: We can give 500,000 uh South Carolinians health access to health care if we expand Medicaid in the state.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: But that's also gonna help out our young people with their conflict resolution skills.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Uh right now, what's happening is a lot of them are just they don't know how to how to do conflict resolution, so what's the first thing they do?
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Pick up a gun.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: And when they pick up a gun, they believe that gun is gonna solve their problems.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: We have to address that, and that's through therapy and mental health and making it accessible to these individuals, also allowing them to get telehealth so that they, if they're living in a rural area and there's no provider in the area, they can actually still get access to it.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we just really talked about that like knowing when to know how to just walk away.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: It's okay to walk away.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: It's okay to keep your mentality, sanity, and just walk away from some things, man.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: So mental health, I'm glad that you're doing that because it's such a rise.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: And when you me and my family members were talking about this the other day, like it's so many people that need that help right now.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: And they don't know how to get it, they don't know the resources or what where to start.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: So that they don't know how to say I need help.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: So that's gonna be that's gonna be amazing.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, you pretty much answered the the fifth question.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: But how does uh faith you know works in your life?
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I I read that you were a deacon.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: I am a deacon.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: I'm a Baptist digger in my church, man.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Awesome, man.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: So tell me how like having faith coming up uh impacted to for who you are today.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I I am the youngest deacon in my church.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Uh uh, I I am uh an active member.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: I serve in my entrepreneurship uh entrepreneurship ministry in my church.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Uh I do a lot of I do a lot of work in my church, uh, and I truly believe that without having faith, I would not be where I am today.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Uh I've gone through a lot of my life.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: I was homeless.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: I went to seven different high schools.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Uh I lost a brother to gun violence.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: I lost another brother to a tragic car accident.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Uh I was a homeless kid.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: I lived in a Motel 6, a travelage in, an evergreen motel.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: I slept in some of my friends' couches.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: I went through all these different things, but yet here I am as a nominee for governor of South Carolina.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: I went from no house to the state house, brother.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: So, you know what I'm saying?
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: So, you know, so my story lets young people know that their past doesn't define the future.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And I truly believe in having faith and working hard for things, you can achieve anything you want to.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: So I keep I keep the word at the head of everything.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: I I start all my meetings off with a prayer.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Uh I make sure I get prayers every day, you know, to thank God because I always tell people, I said, imagine if you woke up today only with the things that you thank God for yesterday.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Imagine, you know, I mean, you're a sound mind, vision, being able to speak, walk.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, all these different things.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, like you have to think how blessed you really are.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: And God is giving me double from my trouble, man.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: I'm not ashamed to say it.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Man, it's so fire, bro.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: Because we got so many people that like watch us, or like just in our, you know, we from Anderson.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: So just like in the community, like, I don't know, like, it's been a lot of deaths going on in Anderson, like a whole bunch of just people just dying randomly, gun violence, or whatever the case may be.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: And this is just a prime example of like, man, you peep, you keep God first, you keep him at the forefront of your life.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: It life ain't happening to you, it's happening for you.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Everything that's happening to you is for a reason.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: He already got the plan set up for you.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: Before he knew you, before you was born, he knew you formed you, had the scope ready to go.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Despite all the stuff that he went through in his life, like he said, look, he's running for governor, and speaking it to us, this is gonna be governor of South Carolina.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: So all that stuff that you're going through, mama not there, daddy not there, family member died.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: We track track tragedy happened to all of us.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: But we can't continue to blame God, can't blame God, and we can't sit here just looking and just blame our life and just act like it's nothing that we can do about it.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: Right, we need to be a problem as up.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we need to stop being victims of our circumstances.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, be victorious.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: We are victors.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: I'm not a victim, I'm a victor.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Come on, right?
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: I'm a survivor of these things, and I continue to work hard to overcome these obstacles, but I also prepare myself to deal with the generational trauma that I've said that I've gone through.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: And that's what young people need to do.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: They need to actually believe in themselves, believe that they can overcome, but also not only do that, have somebody like myself who can speak to their experiences, who who they can look at and say, you know what, that man has been through the same things I've been through.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Come on, man.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: He done overcame the same things I'm gonna have to overcome.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: And your past does not define your future.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: So I want them to know that they can, they too can be the next nominee for governor of South Carolina.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Come on.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Turning your turning their test into a testimony, man.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Period point blank.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: We're gonna get you out of here, man.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Last two questions.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, forget the campaign for a moment, forget Democrat, Republican, Governor, State of House, all that good stuff.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: You know, you sitting across from that Carolina family who's struggling with the mortgage, groceries, healthcare, education, gas prices through the roof.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: Um, what are you telling that family who doesn't understand the analytics?
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: They don't understand political lingo.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: Um, what are you saying to them that will ultimately make them cast their vote for you and have them truly believing that you didn't just sell them another false dream that they may have experienced from previous politicians?
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: So this is what's been interesting as I've been, you know, traveling around the state and talking to people.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Everybody is suffering under the same things right now.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Whether they're black, white, Republican, or Democrat, any of that type of stuff, everybody is suffering under these things.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: You know, one of the things that politicians uh that are in power right now love to brag about, they love to say, GDP is booming in South Carolina.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Businesses are doing amazing here in South Carolina.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: But if you go ask the most random person, how are you doing, they are not going to say, I'm so excited that GDP is booming in South Carolina.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited that Boeing just made record profits.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited that Volvo was expanding.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited about all these different things.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: They're not gonna say that.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: They're going to say, I'm tired.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to figure out how I'm gonna pay this light bill this month.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to figure out how I'm gonna pay this mortgage bill this month.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to figure out how I'm gonna pay this insurance bill this month.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: That's what they're gonna say.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: So, what I've been telling people is that when I am the governor, we would define the success of South Carolina not by how its business is doing, but how its people are doing.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Quality of life is what I am aiming for.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: So everything that I do as governor will be people first, people-centric, to make sure that we are doing things that are going to improve the quality of life for the people of South Carolina.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: That's not a that's not a political party.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: That has nothing to do with politics.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: That is about making sure that people's quality of life is going to be better at the end of the day.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: So, a success for my first term is gonna be I want to be able to go up to the most random person on the street and ask them, has your life gotten better over the last four years?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: And I want them to confidently be able to say, yes, it has.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: Yes, it's good.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: That's real good.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: Final question, man.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: We're gonna get ready to wrap this thing up.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: But when people hear your name, hear the name Jermaine Johnson years from now, four years from now, what do you hope they say?
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: He just kind of answered it.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Boy, yeah, he did hope.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: He just kind of answered it.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: What do you he got answered?
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: What do you hope they say?
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: I I I want people to say that essentially my legacy is that I was a servant leader.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: That I was a champion for young people, and I was a champion for human beings.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: You know, that I was not a divisive individual, that I was all about unity, bringing people together, making sure that humans got the assistance that they needed.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Because you heard me talk about my life story, being homeless and all these different things that I've gone through.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: But when I was going through those situations, it wasn't just Democrats that were helping me.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: It wasn't just Republicans that were helping me.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: It wasn't just Americans that were helping me.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: It wasn't just Christians that were helping me.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: It wasn't just, you know, black people or white people.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: People, humans, help me.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: And that is exactly why I am the way that I am today.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Why why I love everybody, why I treat everybody equally, why I do the things that I do, why why you see me getting the respect that I get from Republicans and Democrats and everybody is because I just treat people the same because people helped me to become the person who I am today.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And so I want my legacy to be all about unity, bringing people together, saving our young people, and making sure we provide opportunities for everybody.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: That's real good.

- 16:18SPEAKER_02: And like, and I'm big on, you know what I'm saying, spirituality, God, Jesus Christ.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: And it's dope to be able to like hear people that got power, that got position, that got influence to go ahead and profess and claim and say this is why I'm here.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: Because I feel like a lot of strings be getting pulled behind the scenes where people be afraid to say it.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: But I just I just respect the fact that you openly about it, man.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: That right there alone made me want to vote for you just for the simple fact that I'm just like, you know what I'm saying?
