- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Fruitful Work, we're asking
- 0:16a question.
- 0:17What kind of fruit am I bearing at
- 0:18work?
- 0:19Because if we're honest, we don't always bear
- 0:21the kind of fruit we wish we would
- 0:22in the workplace.
- 0:23But by God's grace, by the power of
- 0:25the Holy Spirit, we can bear fruit that
- 0:27is good.
- 0:28And this is our second part of our
- 0:30three-part finale to the series, looking at
- 0:32love, the first part of the fruit of
- 0:34the Spirit that Paul gives us in Galatians
- 0:36chapter 5.
- 0:38In our last episode, we looked at love
- 0:39as freedom.
- 0:40In this episode, we're looking at love as
- 0:42work, which seems appropriate for fruitful work.
- 0:45What does it mean for love to work,
- 0:47to be work in our lives?
- 0:53I want to start with a description of
- 0:55someone who is utterly alone.
- 0:58This comes from the writer Donald Miller, who
- 1:01wrote a number of fascinating books in the
- 1:02early 2000s.
- 1:03He's kind of doing different stuff now.
- 1:04He's a business coach.
- 1:05I'm not totally sure what he's up to.
- 1:06It seems to be in a different vein.
- 1:07But this was kind of his landmark book,
- 1:10Blue Like Jazz, 2003, and he's got this
- 1:12chapter called Alone.
- 1:13I'm going to just read an excerpt from
- 1:15it.
- 1:16One of my new housemates, Stacy, wants to
- 1:18write a story about an astronaut.
- 1:21In his story, the astronaut is wearing a
- 1:23suit that keeps him alive by recycling his
- 1:25fluids.
- 1:26In the story, the astronaut is working on
- 1:27a space station when an accident takes place,
- 1:29and he is cast into space to orbit
- 1:32the Earth to spend the rest of his
- 1:34life circling the globe.
- 1:36Stacy says this story is how he imagines
- 1:38hell, a place where a person is completely
- 1:40alone, without others and without God.
- 1:44After Stacy told me about his story, I
- 1:46kept seeing it in my mind.
- 1:48I thought about it before I went to
- 1:49sleep at night.
- 1:50I imagined myself looking out my little bubble
- 1:52helmet at Blue Earth, reaching toward it, closing
- 1:56it between my puffy white spacesuit fingers, wondering
- 1:59if my friends were still there.
- 2:01In my imagination, I would call to them,
- 2:03yell for them, but the sound would only
- 2:05come back loud within my helmet.
- 2:07Through the years, my hair would grow long
- 2:09in my helmet and gather around my forehead
- 2:11and fall across my eyes.
- 2:13Because of my helmet, I would not be
- 2:14able to touch my face with my hands
- 2:16to move my hair out of my eyes,
- 2:18so my view of Earth slowly over the
- 2:20first two years would dim to only a
- 2:23thin line through a curtain of thatch and
- 2:25beard.
- 2:27Ugh.
- 2:29Can you just feel that?
- 2:31This is part of why Donald Miller is
- 2:33such a great writer.
- 2:33He just puts you in that spacesuit, puts
- 2:36you in orbit.
- 2:38What would it be like to be so
- 2:40utterly alone?
- 2:44Of course, there are times when it's good
- 2:46to be alone, to have restful, fruitful, life
- 2:50-giving solitude, but this is something different, something
- 2:53more extreme, to be truly cut off, truly
- 2:57and permanently alone.
- 3:00It's a terrifying image and its power comes
- 3:04from that sense of absence, absence of light,
- 3:10absence of community, and it's ultimately the absence
- 3:15of love.
- 3:18We feel that sense of aloneness, even in
- 3:21an imaginary form, as so terrifying, because we
- 3:24know that we are made for love.
- 3:29We were not meant to do life without
- 3:31it.
- 3:34And this is at the heart of Paul's
- 3:37letter to the Galatians and the heart of
- 3:38the whole New Testament, the message of God's
- 3:42love for us in Jesus Christ and how
- 3:44that frees us to love other people.
- 3:47And Paul has this beautiful turn of phrase
- 3:49in Galatians, chapter five, verse six, so this
- 3:51is before he gets to talking about the
- 3:53fruit of the spirit, but it's kind of
- 3:54leading right into it.
- 3:56And it might sound kind of awkward to
- 3:58our ears because he's talking about circumcision, but
- 4:00circumcision is part of the Jewish Torah tradition.
- 4:03It is kind of a stand in symbol
- 4:05for the entirety of following the ritual requirements
- 4:08of Torah, and that's the context of what
- 4:10he's saying.
- 4:11So what he says in chapter five, verse
- 4:13six is this.
- 4:15In Christ, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for
- 4:21anything, but only faith working through love.
- 4:26Now, this is one of those moments when
- 4:27Paul kind of shows his card, so to
- 4:29speak, because he says something in very all
- 4:31or nothing terms.
- 4:32He says, look, this, this ritual stuff, that
- 4:35doesn't count for anything.
- 4:36The only thing that counts is faith working
- 4:40through love.
- 4:41Now, that might seem like a weird thing
- 4:43to say, especially given the fact that he
- 4:45makes a whole list of things that count
- 4:47just a few verses later.
- 4:49He gives us all these different things that
- 4:50count, right?
- 4:50Love counts, but he also says joy counts,
- 4:54peace counts, patient counts, and so on and
- 4:56so forth.
- 4:57So how can it be that the only
- 4:58thing that counts is faith working through love?
- 5:02Well, I think this question gets us to
- 5:04a place of deeper insight about how all
- 5:06of those things connect to each other, because
- 5:08if the only thing that counts is faith
- 5:10working through love, but the fruit of the
- 5:11spirit includes all those other things, then somehow
- 5:13all those other things must be included under
- 5:16the banner of faith working through love.
- 5:19I think that's exactly what Paul intends us
- 5:20to take away from this.
- 5:22So Paul is saying that we are saved
- 5:25through faith, that we are justified through faith.
- 5:28That comes up again and again in Galatians
- 5:30and in other passages as well, like in
- 5:31Ephesians chapter two, when he says we're saved
- 5:33by grace through faith.
- 5:36That means that we believe God and he
- 5:39credits that to us as righteousness.
- 5:41We are included in God's covenant through our
- 5:44belief in Jesus.
- 5:46Now, at first, that might sound like it's
- 5:48disconnected from the stuff that we do, right,
- 5:51because it's like the emphasis is on what
- 5:52we believe.
- 5:54But what we believe naturally leads to what
- 5:57we do.
- 5:58So, for example, in fall of 2023, I
- 6:01was dealing with a depressive episode.
- 6:03I had dealt with depressive episodes in the
- 6:04past, but this one was really bad.
- 6:06I started seeing a new counselor and I
- 6:08said to him, hey, I wonder if medication
- 6:10would help?
- 6:10And he looked at me and he said,
- 6:11Chris, I think medication would help.
- 6:13And I believed him.
- 6:16So you know what I did?
- 6:17I scheduled an appointment with a psychiatric nurse
- 6:19practitioner and I got a prescription for Prozac
- 6:22and I started taking it and it did
- 6:24help.
- 6:25It helped a lot.
- 6:26Actually, I'm really grateful for modern psychiatric medicine
- 6:29and that's been part of God's care for
- 6:31me with my struggle with depression.
- 6:33But the point is I took the pill.
- 6:35I obeyed my therapist, so to speak.
- 6:38I obeyed my psychiatric nurse practitioner because I
- 6:42believed him.
- 6:44I believed my counselor when he said this
- 6:47will help.
- 6:49And so when we believe Jesus, that naturally
- 6:51leads us to doing what Jesus says.
- 6:54So Paul, he speaks as an apostle of
- 6:57Jesus Christ.
- 6:57His entire authority as an apostle is derived
- 6:59from Jesus Christ.
- 7:01When he says, look, here's the fruit of
- 7:02the spirit, he wants us to take it
- 7:03seriously because he is a messenger from Jesus.
- 7:07It's because we have loyalty to Jesus as
- 7:09Lord that we're taking notes from Paul and
- 7:11saying like, OK, yeah, Paul, I got it.
- 7:13So joy, peace, patience, kindness, uh-huh, uh
- 7:15-huh.
- 7:16Like it's because of our commitment to Jesus
- 7:17that we care about those things.
- 7:19And that's exactly as it should be.
- 7:21But Paul is saying, OK, so if you
- 7:23believe in Jesus, if you put your faith
- 7:25in Jesus, that will work through love.
- 7:29That will lead to you doing all of
- 7:31these things to you becoming the kind of
- 7:33person who is characterized by these things.
- 7:36So the entirety of the fruit of the
- 7:38spirit is under that banner.
- 7:39Faith working through love.
- 7:44And love in particular, it's the first one
- 7:46on the list for a reason.
- 7:48Love is the virtue that contains all the
- 7:51other virtues.
- 7:52And Paul says this explicitly in his letter
- 7:54to the Colossians.
- 7:55He says it binds them together in perfect
- 7:57unity.
- 7:58But it's also a concept that's been kind
- 7:59of unpacked through Christian philosophy over the years
- 8:02with this idea of the unity of the
- 8:04virtues.
- 8:05So we've got to put our thinking caps
- 8:07on to wrap our heads around this.
- 8:08But I think it's going to help us
- 8:09understand love and the practice of faith working
- 8:12through love more deeply.
- 8:13So so let's dig into it.
- 8:15We're going to go to one of our
- 8:16great philosophical minds in the Christian tradition, St.
- 8:18Thomas Aquinas, and he writes this.
- 8:21This is part of his Summa Theologiae.
- 8:25Virtue is ordered to the good.
- 8:27The ultimate and principal good of man is
- 8:30the enjoyment of God.
- 8:32And then he cites a specific Psalm, Psalm
- 8:3473, verse 28.
- 8:36So I actually want to go to that
- 8:37psalm to try and unpack.
- 8:38What is Aquinas saying about virtue being ordered
- 8:41to the good and the ultimate and principal
- 8:43good of man or of human beings being
- 8:45the enjoyment of God?
- 8:48So Psalm 73 articulates a sense of desire
- 8:51for God.
- 8:53This is in verse 25.
- 8:55Whom have I in heaven but you?
- 8:58And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
- 9:02My flesh and my heart may fail, but
- 9:04God is the strength of my heart and
- 9:05my portion forever.
- 9:08Skipping ahead to the final verse.
- 9:10But as for me, it is good to
- 9:12be near God.
- 9:13I have made the sovereign Lord my refuge.
- 9:16I will tell of all your deeds.
- 9:21But as for me, it is good to
- 9:23be near God.
- 9:25I have made the Lord God my refuge.
- 9:28Where do we come into ourselves?
- 9:31Where are we most healed most well?
- 9:34What is above all others the best place
- 9:36for us?
- 9:38It's wherever God is.
- 9:40That's what Aquinas is getting at when he
- 9:42says that the ultimate and principal good of
- 9:45humankind is the enjoyment of God.
- 9:48God is what's good for us.
- 9:52Remember that C.S. Lewis quote about the
- 9:54meaning of love, the steadfast wish for the
- 9:56other person's ultimate good as far as it
- 9:58can be obtained.
- 10:00Well, Aquinas is saying any person's ultimate good
- 10:03is God and the enjoyment of God.
- 10:08For me, it is good to be near
- 10:10God.
- 10:12And that's what unites all the fruits of
- 10:14the spirit.
- 10:16So Aquinas also writes this.
- 10:17He says to this good, meaning to God,
- 10:20to this good man is ordered by charity
- 10:23or by love.
- 10:26So he's saying we are ordered.
- 10:28We are put in our place, so to
- 10:29speak.
- 10:30We are positioned correctly by love.
- 10:35That positions us toward the ultimate good, which
- 10:38is God.
- 10:41And so if we if we don't have
- 10:42love, then all the other virtues get out
- 10:45of whack.
- 10:46So we can actually kind of break this
- 10:47down as we think about the rest of
- 10:49the parts of the fruit of the spirit.
- 10:50Like, for example, take patience, right?
- 10:53Suppose you had patience of a kind, but
- 10:55you didn't have love.
- 10:56So maybe you're dealing with a client at
- 10:58work, right, and you need them to close
- 11:01a deal with you.
- 11:03But they have a habit of really talking
- 11:05that it's just hard for them to shut
- 11:07up.
- 11:08And you are able to exercise a kind
- 11:10of polite, socially acceptable salesman presence towards them
- 11:16or saleswoman presence towards them and listen to
- 11:20them attentively and help them.
- 11:22And and then they're satisfied and they close
- 11:26the deal.
- 11:27And so, you know, get it signed off
- 11:29and it's all good.
- 11:29And then you go home and you just
- 11:31rant and rave about how this person was
- 11:32such an idiot, right?
- 11:34Was that real patience?
- 11:36Like, obviously, you had patience of a kind.
- 11:38You had self control of a kind.
- 11:39You were able to communicate politely with them.
- 11:41But what was your real motive?
- 11:43Your real motive is like you just need
- 11:45to close that deal.
- 11:46Like you were looking out for number one.
- 11:47You didn't actually have a sense of honor
- 11:50for that person's well-being in front of
- 11:52you.
- 11:54Because if you had a desire to deeply
- 11:55honor them, you wouldn't go and complain about
- 11:58them behind your back as soon as you
- 11:59got home.
- 12:01You see how patience, if it's going to
- 12:03be true patience, if it's going to be
- 12:05from the heart, it has to be motivated
- 12:07by love, has to be motivated by that
- 12:09steady wish for the other person's good as
- 12:12far as it can be obtained.
- 12:14Same thing with kindness.
- 12:15Like, let's say you're kind to your boss
- 12:17because you're trying to get a promotion.
- 12:19Was that true kindness?
- 12:21No, that's more like the niceness that may
- 12:22not be true heart kindness.
- 12:25But if it's motivated by love, it's a
- 12:26sense of, yes, my boss is my boss.
- 12:28And yes, my boss has influence over my
- 12:29career.
- 12:29But my boss is also an image bearer
- 12:31of God.
- 12:33Then it's different.
- 12:34Then it's true kindness.
- 12:35Then it's kindness motivated by love.
- 12:38Love is what orders us to the good.
- 12:42Love as a motive makes all of our
- 12:45other virtues become what they're meant to be.
- 12:48It orders every part of the fruit of
- 12:50the spirit appropriately.
- 12:53OK, so that kind of idea of love
- 12:56ordering us towards the ultimate good is a
- 12:58philosophical idea that Aquinas spells out.
- 13:01I'm not saying that Paul has that exact
- 13:02philosophical architecture kind of packaged neatly into what
- 13:05he's saying in Galatians.
- 13:07But I think it is a helpful way
- 13:08of understanding how it can be that we
- 13:11can fit all of the parts of the
- 13:13fruit of the spirit under that one heading,
- 13:15faith working through love, because that Paul is
- 13:19saying, Paul is saying the only thing that
- 13:21counts is faith working through love.
- 13:23Then somehow joy must be faith working through
- 13:27love.
- 13:28Peace is faith working through love.
- 13:30Patience is faith working through love.
- 13:33Kindness is faith working through love.
- 13:36Goodness is faith working through love.
- 13:39Faithfulness is faith working through love.
- 13:42Gentleness is faith working through love.
- 13:45Self-control is faith working through love.
- 13:50And again, the ultimate good news here is
- 13:53that we have that already in the Holy
- 13:56Spirit.
- 13:56When we put our faith in Jesus Christ,
- 13:59the love of God is poured into our
- 14:01hearts through the Holy Spirit.
- 14:02That's what Paul says in Romans 5.5.
- 14:05And so we know that that we have
- 14:08the love that we need.
- 14:10Circumcision doesn't count.
- 14:11Uncircumcision doesn't count.
- 14:12Only faith working through love.
- 14:14And we already have that love in the
- 14:16power of the Holy Spirit.
- 14:17Okay, so when Paul says it's the only
- 14:20thing that counts, you might think, well, does
- 14:22he mean it's the only thing that counts
- 14:23in salvation?
- 14:24But I think it's actually more broad.
- 14:25I don't think he's just talking about salvation.
- 14:27I think he's talking about all of life.
- 14:28He's saying faith working through love is the
- 14:30only thing that counts period in all of
- 14:32life.
- 14:33This is the only thing that counts.
- 14:34And if that's true, that's actually really radical
- 14:37for our whole life, including our life at
- 14:39work.
- 14:40It's actually very practical, right?
- 14:42Because it means that our work can become
- 14:44love.
- 14:44If the only thing that counts is faith
- 14:46working through love, then our work can become
- 14:50love.
- 14:51Everything we do in the workplace can be
- 14:52about loving somebody else.
- 14:54If everything can somehow come under that heading
- 14:57of faith working through love.
- 15:00So again, when we're interacting with another person,
- 15:01when we're getting a project done by ourselves,
- 15:03when we're clocking in for the day, we
- 15:05can always bring that attitude of like, oh,
- 15:07in this moment, this is faith working through
- 15:10love.
- 15:10I'm trusting in God.
- 15:11I'm putting my faith in Christ.
- 15:13I'm believing Him.
- 15:14I'm staking things on Him, and then I'm
- 15:16doing what I'm doing in order to seek
- 15:17the good and the well-being of everybody
- 15:19around me.
- 15:21Oh, yeah, that's faith working through love in
- 15:23every moment of our day.
- 15:24Our whole day can be saturated and interwoven
- 15:27with the purposes of God.
- 15:29So that makes work really practical in spiritual
- 15:31terms.
- 15:32And that's part of how God continues to
- 15:33deepen and form that love in our hearts
- 15:36over time.
- 15:37Sometimes people get confused about this and think
- 15:39that we only grow spiritually when we're doing
- 15:41specifically spiritual things like you're only growing spiritually
- 15:44when you're reading your Bible or when you
- 15:46have a set aside prayer time, but you
- 15:48can also grow spiritually just by doing your
- 15:50everyday work as faith working through love and
- 15:54God will deepen your maturity in your heart
- 15:56as you do that.
- 15:58This is also really practical in terms of
- 16:01ethical discernment.
- 16:02It's not the only thing we need for
- 16:03ethical discernment, but it is really helpful for
- 16:05ethical discernment.
- 16:06If you ever asked to do something at
- 16:08work and you just don't feel right about
- 16:09it and you're trying to figure out, is
- 16:10this the right thing to do or not?
- 16:11Like my boss asked me to, but I
- 16:12have misgivings.
- 16:13I'm not sure why.
- 16:14Just ask, is there a way that this
- 16:16can be faith working through love?
- 16:18And if the answer is no, don't do
- 16:20it.
- 16:21And I've had experiences like this.
- 16:23Like I had a situation in a workplace.
- 16:24It's kind of a gray issue.
- 16:25It wasn't super black and white, but I
- 16:26just didn't feel right about it.
- 16:27So I called my friend Josh and I
- 16:28was like, Josh, can we talk about this?
- 16:29Can we pray about this?
- 16:30And I just realized, like, I can't do
- 16:32this.
- 16:32Right.
- 16:33This, whatever it is that I'm being asked
- 16:34to do.
- 16:34It's just it would not be faith working
- 16:36through love.
- 16:36It would not be seeking the good of
- 16:38the people who I'm supposed to be serving.
- 16:39It would somehow be seeking something else.
- 16:42And that was helpful.
- 16:43That provided the clarity that I needed.
- 16:44And thankfully, the project got assigned to somebody
- 16:46else that, you know, I didn't even have
- 16:48to do it in the end anyways.
- 16:50So again, it's very practical, this idea of
- 16:52faith working through love.
- 16:53It encompasses all of our work experiences.
- 16:56It gives us a kind of a simple
- 16:57heuristic, a simple shortcut for ethical discernment, figuring
- 17:00out is this faith working through love or
- 17:02not?
- 17:03And it wraps our work into our life
- 17:05with God.
- 17:07It helps us see that every moment of
- 17:10our day is a place where we can
- 17:11find God at work.
