Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, it was pretty mortifying on Friday when we heard
- 0:02Speaker 1: from Ian out there at the Berry Springs tavern about
- 0:05Speaker 1: that ram raid that they'd been subjected to. I know
- 0:08Speaker 1: that plenty of you have then viewed that vision, that
- 0:11Speaker 1: security vision, which really saw exactly what had gone on.
- 0:14Speaker 1: They're in there allegedly for about six minutes. We know
- 0:18Speaker 1: that a staff member, two staff members had hidden in
- 0:20Speaker 1: the office. One of those was Ian's daughter. It was
- 0:25Speaker 1: scary stuff. And when you heard the emotion in Ian's
- 0:29Speaker 1: voice on Friday, I think everybody felt sort of really
- 0:32Speaker 1: quite sad, as we felt again this morning hearing from
- 0:36Speaker 1: Karl in Alice Springs and joining me on the line
- 0:39Speaker 1: right now is Tim Button. Now. He is the student
- 0:43Speaker 1: who had his land Cruisers stolen and it was actually
- 0:45Speaker 1: the one that was used in that Berry Springs ram raid.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Good morning, Tim.
- 0:51Speaker 2: How's it going?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Not too bad mate? How are you and what happened
- 0:55Speaker 1: last week?
- 0:58Speaker 2: Honestly? Yeah, just still pretty frustrated at the moment. Yeah,
- 1:01Speaker 2: might peer for a trade school and had my car
- 1:04Speaker 2: parked at fee to you where I'm staying, And yeah,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I work up in the morning to go to trade
- 1:10Speaker 2: school on the Friday, And yes, mask, guss on the
- 1:12Speaker 2: ground and no car to be found.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Mate, What were your thoughts when you walked out and
- 1:16Speaker 1: you can't see your car?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Honestly? Yeah, just shock at the first and then yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 2: a bit of realization and obviously a lot of anger. Yeah,
- 1:26Speaker 2: from other springs. Obviously it's nothing new to me, but
- 1:29Speaker 2: obviously you hear about in town. When it happens to you,
- 1:32Speaker 2: it's a bit harder.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah for sure. Now have you seen that vision of
- 1:38Speaker 1: the ram rad out at Berry Springs And what's your
- 1:41Speaker 1: reaction then when you're seeing your vehicle being used in
- 1:43Speaker 1: that way? Yeah?
- 1:45Speaker 2: Again yeah, pretty much just shock and anger. Just how
- 1:48Speaker 2: can someone do that to someone? Obviously, Yeah, obviously putting
- 1:52Speaker 2: that business in Yeah, a lot of money to recover
- 1:55Speaker 2: from that, and yeah, knowing there's people in there, it's
- 1:58Speaker 2: pretty heartbreaking to see.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It was bloody devastating, you know. When we caught up
- 2:03Speaker 1: with Ian who was the owner of the Berry Springs
- 2:05Speaker 1: tavern last week and it's terrible, you know, even hearing
- 2:08Speaker 1: from you. You're up here studying and then to have
- 2:12Speaker 1: your vehicle stolen while you're there staying out at CDU,
- 2:15Speaker 1: it's you know, it's not something that you want as
- 2:17Speaker 1: a student.
- 2:19Speaker 2: No, that's right. Obviously, apprenticeship's hard to get through at
- 2:23Speaker 2: the moment as it is, and this definitely isn't an
- 2:26Speaker 2: added bonus, that's for sure.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Mate. What kind of personal impact does it then have
- 2:30Speaker 1: on you in terms of trying to do your apprenticeship,
- 2:33Speaker 1: trying to do your studies and not having your vehicle.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously I drove up here just because trade school's
- 2:40Speaker 2: a bit of a drive from where I'm staying, so
- 2:42Speaker 2: obviously that's a bit tricky. But one of the boys
- 2:45Speaker 2: here is giving me a less to and front. But yeah,
- 2:47Speaker 2: just makes everything a bit trickier now I'm trying to
- 2:49Speaker 2: organize flight time. Yeah, overnight, unfortunately the car was stolen
- 2:55Speaker 2: again from the police impound yard out at what I
- 2:58Speaker 2: Want and recovered this morning in a non drivable state.
- 3:03Speaker 2: They said, apparently there's oil and d's are leaking from it,
- 3:05Speaker 2: so they've probably written it off this time. But yeah,
- 3:08Speaker 2: it's got stolen last night from the impound yard, given
- 3:11Speaker 2: through the gates there and you're joking. Yeah, so not
- 3:16Speaker 2: only accident.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Not only stolen last week and obviously using that ram ray,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but now stolen again from the police impounding.
- 3:25Speaker 2: What a Yeah, oh.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Mate, do you have any idea what state your vehicles in?
- 3:34Speaker 2: I haven't seen any pictures of it yet. I talked
- 3:36Speaker 2: to a police officer from Darwin, not directly to what
- 3:40Speaker 2: I They said, it's no longer in a drug will state.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Obviously the ignition has been bashed out of it so
- 3:45Speaker 2: they can start it. But when they found it this
- 3:48Speaker 2: morningparently had to be towed back. It was no longer
- 3:50Speaker 2: able to be driven.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So how does that make you feel? You know, I'm
- 3:54Speaker 1: assuming that as a young apprentice, you know it like
- 3:58Speaker 1: it's it's actually a big call to save your money
- 4:01Speaker 1: for your car, and I would imagine that's made you
- 4:05Speaker 1: feel even more devastated than what you felt last week.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it obviously. Yeah, it's my pride and enjoy.
- 4:11Speaker 2: So yeah, boys, keep it, keep it nice and shiny,
- 4:14Speaker 2: and yeah, when you see that gets happened to it,
- 4:16Speaker 2: it's pretty frustrating.
- 4:18Speaker 1: So what's the process now for you, Tim, in terms
- 4:21Speaker 1: of trying to get your car back, particularly after it's
- 4:24Speaker 1: then been stolen from the compound? Where is that even?
- 4:29Speaker 2: So apparently it's been towed back to the police compound.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I'm not again not sure what condition. And obviously even
- 4:36Speaker 2: now that the compound has been broken into, I'm not
- 4:39Speaker 2: sure how secure it is at the moment. And yeah,
- 4:42Speaker 2: now we're going through insurances. You have to be bringing
- 4:45Speaker 2: it back to Dalin for assessment. But obviously not much
- 4:49Speaker 2: hope there for what condition.
- 4:50Speaker 1: It's been in terms of like that financial you know,
- 4:54Speaker 1: the financial aspect of it, like how much is your
- 4:57Speaker 1: car worth and what's you know, what's what's it mean?
- 5:00Speaker 2: You now, Yeah, it's probably worth in today's market around
- 5:05Speaker 2: twenty five to thirty grand for a Vancouver Luckily it
- 5:09Speaker 2: is insured. So just going through that at the moment
- 5:12Speaker 2: to get that or assorted. Yeah, not too sure at
- 5:16Speaker 2: the moment, just waiting for all those steps to take place.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, mate, Obviously, you know we talk a lot about crime.
- 5:23Speaker 1: You know, some days I think to myself, we'll try
- 5:25Speaker 1: and have a day where we don't talk about crime,
- 5:27Speaker 1: but unfortunately that never, you know, it never really happens.
- 5:32Speaker 1: How Like, how's it for you coming from Alice Springs,
- 5:35Speaker 1: I know you're an Alice Springs boy and dealing with
- 5:38Speaker 1: the issues that they've got in Alice and then coming
- 5:40Speaker 1: up to Darwin and being subjected to this.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously, Yeah, a bit of a shock. I knew
- 5:47Speaker 2: it was bad up here, but obviously there's a few
- 5:49Speaker 2: people warn me that always keep it locked and you know,
- 5:52Speaker 2: be careful of it. But I thought, oh, coming from Alice,
- 5:55Speaker 2: I've never had any issues there, do the same. But yeah,
- 5:58Speaker 2: it's just a bit of a shock to us. Wide
- 6:01Speaker 2: issue and nothing seems to be done about it. You've
- 6:04Speaker 2: seen yeah, back in ours at home, we've got concrete
- 6:07Speaker 2: bollers going up everywhere. That's just main street of town's
- 6:10Speaker 2: just all plywood windows, no more glass anymore. It's becoming
- 6:14Speaker 2: a ghost town. It's hard to see.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Oh mate, I'm really grateful that you've had a chat
- 6:19Speaker 1: with us this morning. I appreciate you telling us exactly
- 6:22Speaker 1: what's gone on and your story. Can you keep us
- 6:25Speaker 1: up to date with how things go in terms of
- 6:27Speaker 1: getting your car back as well, because I know that
- 6:30Speaker 1: that's been an issue for some of our other listeners
- 6:32Speaker 1: who have had their vehicles stolen then taken out to
- 6:35Speaker 1: different communities and it's you know, the process of getting
- 6:38Speaker 1: it back has been a tough one for some people.
- 6:41Speaker 1: But if you're able to keep us up to date,
- 6:43Speaker 1: we'd really appreciate. I think it's I think it's you know,
- 6:47Speaker 1: it's good for people to know the impact that this
- 6:49Speaker 1: has sort of longer term as well, in terms of
- 6:52Speaker 1: getting your car back and trying to go through that
- 6:54Speaker 1: process with insurance.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, and I'd be happy to Yeah, obviously
- 7:00Speaker 2: it wasn't just a car, and so I've got content
- 7:02Speaker 2: in that personal content that am now missing as well.
- 7:04Speaker 2: So just sort of going through all those steps to
- 7:07Speaker 2: rekindle it all back and get back to square one.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh mate, I appreciate your time this morning before
- 7:14Speaker 1: I let you go. How far into your apprenticeship are you?
- 7:17Speaker 2: I'm second year this year, so two more years to
- 7:19Speaker 2: go and then i'll be licensed.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Oh good on you mate. Well, I really appreciate you
- 7:24Speaker 1: speaking to me this morning, and I'm really sorry to
- 7:27Speaker 1: hear what's going on for you. And I hope that
- 7:29Speaker 1: you get that car back and I hope that you
- 7:31Speaker 1: know everything goes well with insurance.
- 7:34Speaker 2: No, thanks for having me.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Thank you,
