Latest / Abbey the Podcast Lady / How I Built a Business Out of Things I Did for Fun
Transcript
- 0:00Thank you. This week's podcast episode is a little
- 0:07bit different than what I have been doing recently,
- 0:11which is more guest interviews and sharing like
- 0:14FAQs and that sort of thing. Today, I want to
- 0:16spend some time talking about a milestone that
- 0:19I just hit because I think it's important to
- 0:21celebrate these milestones. I am always encouraging
- 0:24other people to celebrate theirs. And I'm like,
- 0:26you know what? I'm not doing a very good job
- 0:28of celebrating my own. So we are going to be
- 0:30celebrating a milestone today for Abby Graves
- 0:33Productions. On June 1st, I will have officially
- 0:36been self -employed for two full years, which
- 0:41is crazy to think about if I were to rewind in
- 0:45time even. gosh, to 2022 and would have told
- 0:49that version of Abby that you would be full -time
- 0:53self -employed for two years in 2026 and you
- 0:56would be just having the time of your life doing
- 0:58it, she would have looked at you like you were
- 1:00insane because that girl still thought that she
- 1:02was going to be a radio DJ forever and ever and
- 1:05ever. And that's just not who I am anymore. I
- 1:08feel like I've lived a lot of lives since then.
- 1:10So we're just going to be having a little yap
- 1:11about that today. I did find an interesting statistic
- 1:15on the internet and it is The odds of making
- 1:17it two years self -employed in Minnesota are
- 1:20roughly 78 to 80 percent. This slightly beats
- 1:23the national average as Minnesota consistently
- 1:25ranks among the top states in the country for
- 1:27small business and startup longevity, which is
- 1:29good to know because, you know, I am in Minnesota
- 1:32and running a small business after all. The odds
- 1:34of survival break down like this year one, 20
- 1:37percent of new businesses fail. Year two, 30
- 1:39to 32 percent of those remaining fail. And then
- 1:42beyond year two, once a self -employed business
- 1:45or startup makes it. past that two -year mark,
- 1:47the survival rate stabilizes significantly. So
- 1:50that is very promising to hear. I mean, running
- 1:53a small business definitely comes with its struggles.
- 1:55Every day is so incredibly different from the
- 1:58next, especially in my industry. My primary industry,
- 2:01I would say, is podcasting. That is what I do
- 2:03for like my weekday job, I would say, but it
- 2:06bleeds out into the weekends and pretty much
- 2:08every free second that I have. But I also supplement
- 2:11my income with wedding DJing. I run a photo booth.
- 2:15rental business, a video guest book rental business,
- 2:18and I host music bingo services. They all fall
- 2:20under the umbrella of Abby Graves Productions.
- 2:23It's been fun to like figure out what does Abby
- 2:25Graves Productions entail. Let's rewind even
- 2:28to June 1st of 2024 when I went full -time self
- 2:31-employed. At that time, I think I had a roster
- 2:33of about seven clients, I want to say, and I
- 2:38was producing podcasts for them every single
- 2:41week. And at the time, I was DJing weddings,
- 2:43but I didn't have my photo booth business I didn't
- 2:46have my video guest book business I didn't have
- 2:49my music bingo business I was still hosting bar
- 2:52trivia at that time but that was just as a contractor
- 2:54for trivia ninjas that wasn't my own company
- 2:57I was doing that kind of as a side thing the
- 3:00music bingo thing is all on me that is my business
- 3:02that is what I do I have a couple of contractors
- 3:04that can go out if I get in a pinch and I double
- 3:07book myself but for the most part it's all Me
- 3:10doing it. So my business really has grown and
- 3:12evolved over the past two years. I just think
- 3:15about where I sit now on a monthly basis for
- 3:18like what I'm billing, what I'm doing. And I'm
- 3:19like, oh, that girl two years ago, she was not
- 3:22doing as much as I'm doing now. It's like, how
- 3:24did I think I was going to survive? And that's
- 3:26the thing. Like when you take a risk and a gamble
- 3:28on yourself. It's sink or swim. You're going
- 3:32to figure it out. It might not pan out how you
- 3:34wanted it to. Luckily for me, it's been panning
- 3:37out pretty well. That's not to say there hasn't
- 3:39been struggles. I mean, I've lost clients due
- 3:42to them having budget cutbacks, due to them supporting
- 3:45their families in different ways, due to it just
- 3:47not being the right time for them to be podcasting.
- 3:49And I miss the ones that I've lost dearly. We
- 3:52still stay in touch. But there's been times where
- 3:54it's like, oh my gosh, what am I going to do?
- 3:56There was... One week, just this winter where
- 4:00I lost two clients in a matter of a week. And
- 4:03it was like a $1 ,500 a month hit that I took.
- 4:06And I'm like, what am I going to do? And you
- 4:08just figure it out. You figure out ways to supplement
- 4:11that income. In my case, it was, okay, well,
- 4:14if that's the hit that I'm taking, I'll DJ more
- 4:16weddings. I'll book more music bingo events.
- 4:18I will figure out a way to make this work. I
- 4:21have not once in this two -year stretch of time
- 4:24gotten to the point. where I'm like, I need to
- 4:27apply for a job. I have just been going all in
- 4:30on what I'm doing for my production company.
- 4:33And it's insane to think about, like I have kept
- 4:36my bills paid for two years based on solely the
- 4:40work that I am doing for myself and for my clients.
- 4:43What a wild. concept what a wild thing to say
- 4:46and I am just so proud of myself I know that
- 4:50it's not cool to be like braggy and like look
- 4:52at me look at all that I've accomplished but
- 4:54I feel like this is something that we all need
- 4:56to be a little more braggy about especially if
- 4:58you're running a small business even if you're
- 4:59running it part -time if you are doing something
- 5:02like this to pay your bills and support your
- 5:05family no matter what that family looks like
- 5:08you need to be bragging about it more you need
- 5:10to own the fact that you are doing this super
- 5:13cool thing you are putting your heart, your soul,
- 5:15your blood, your sweat, your tears into this
- 5:18thing and making it happen. Part -time, full
- 5:21-time, even 20 % of the time. If you're doing
- 5:24something like this. Brag about it. Don't be
- 5:26humble about it anymore. The time to be humble
- 5:28is long gone. It is time to own the fact that
- 5:31we are doing cool things and we are providing
- 5:33for ourselves and our families by doing those
- 5:36cool things. That is the benefit to living in
- 5:39this era. Like it is 2026. We don't need to be
- 5:43doing the same old, same old things that our
- 5:46grandparents did. We have AI, we have the internet,
- 5:48like the options to take care of yourself and
- 5:51take care of your family are truly... limitless
- 5:53if you are just willing to put in the work. There's
- 5:56no shortage of work to be done. Trust me. I was
- 5:58working. I put in a 17 -hour day on Saturday.
- 6:01I put in a six -hour day on Sunday. I worked
- 6:05from 8 a .m. to 10 p .m. last night. There was
- 6:09a couple of breaks in there, but not super long
- 6:10ones. It is a grind. There is a lot of work to
- 6:14be done if you want to make your dreams happen,
- 6:16but it is so... worth it to put in that work
- 6:20and make it happen because I get to sit here
- 6:22and talk about it I'm feeling really in my feels
- 6:25this week with it being my two -year anniversary
- 6:27of self -employment my business coach told me
- 6:30to go do something fun to celebrate and this
- 6:32is my idea what that something fun was she's
- 6:35like what are you doing to celebrate I'm like
- 6:36not sure. I think I'm going to record a podcast
- 6:38episode about it because I have built my life
- 6:41around the things that I want to do for fun.
- 6:43Podcasting, DJing, music bingo, photo booths,
- 6:46video guest book, like editing things. That is
- 6:48what I did in my free time and turned it into
- 6:51a full -time business. And I am just incredibly
- 6:53proud of myself. I am so grateful for the amazing
- 6:56support that I've had in all of this. I truly
- 6:59would not have been able to do this without...
- 7:02My husband being behind me 100 % and also believing
- 7:05in me and believing in my work ethic and my ability
- 7:07to pivot and figure things out when I need to.
- 7:10I wouldn't be able to do it without my family
- 7:11understanding that this is my life and I'm going
- 7:14to be busy and I won't make it to everything
- 7:16that they want me at. But it's for my dream and
- 7:20my vision. I wouldn't be able to do it without
- 7:21my amazing clients. I have a roster of truly
- 7:25talented, incredible difference makers in the
- 7:29world. I cherish each and every one of them so
- 7:33deeply in my heart. And what's so cool is that
- 7:35they all do different things. I have a cattle
- 7:38rancher. I have public speakers. I have authors.
- 7:40I have business owners. I have... thought leaders.
- 7:43I have nonprofit founders. I work with the coolest
- 7:47people and I'm so grateful for each and every
- 7:49one of them, for them trusting me to help share
- 7:52their stories every single week and create content
- 7:54for them and get their message out into the world.
- 7:57I just think they're the coolest people. I might
- 7:59be a little biased, but truly they are just wonderful
- 8:01humans that I get to work with every single week.
- 8:04And I love them all so much. They're like my
- 8:06kids. I don't have kids, so my clients have become
- 8:09my children that I just love and want to see
- 8:11them. thrive and succeed in this world. And I
- 8:13get to be part of that success story for them.
- 8:16So I'm just so grateful for them. I'm grateful
- 8:18for my friends. It's been an insane two years.
- 8:21It has gone in the blink of an eye. Even two
- 8:23years ago, I didn't have the studio that I'm
- 8:25recording in. I didn't get my studio in downtown
- 8:27until January of 2025. I kind of want to rewind
- 8:31two years ago to Abby on June 1st, walking out
- 8:35of the county building and being full -time self
- 8:37-employed and go, hey, guess what? A block from
- 8:39this door that you're walking out of, you're
- 8:41going to have a studio space. It's going to be
- 8:43all yours. And it's going to be a 9 by 12 room
- 8:46that Xcel Energy considers legally to be a closet,
- 8:49but it's going to be your studio space. It is
- 8:51your brick and mortar business that you're running
- 8:53in downtown St. Cloud. Like she would have been
- 8:56floored because she wanted a studio space. She
- 8:58wanted to be in downtown, but... This version
- 9:00of her made it happen. So it's really cool to
- 9:02look back and see how far I've come. I actually
- 9:05tried to count how many podcasts that I've made
- 9:07for people in my time doing this. And I got to
- 9:11about 800. And then I'm like, okay, I can't count
- 9:14any more than this. I've made over 800 podcasts
- 9:17for people. That is crazy. That is so many shows
- 9:22and so much supporting content to go with it.
- 9:25That includes... reels and Pinterest pins and
- 9:28static graphics and carousel posts and full videos.
- 9:31There's just so much that goes into all this.
- 9:33And I love helping guide people through it. I
- 9:36just literally, as I'm recording this this morning,
- 9:39I got to help launch another show. And we were
- 9:41working on the intro and the trailer. And I know
- 9:44how all this stuff works now. And I get to help
- 9:47guide people through it that don't know. And
- 9:50I didn't have that guide when I was first starting
- 9:52the Small Town Tourist. I had no idea what I
- 9:55was doing. figuring it out as I went but now
- 9:57I get to be the person leading the people and
- 10:01be like nope this is what we do next this is
- 10:03best practice it's gonna be so much easier if
- 10:05we do x y and z and it's saving them time it's
- 10:08saving them having to figure it out and google
- 10:10things like it's just so wonderful to get to
- 10:12be that helpful person for people and this is
- 10:15actually the one that i just recorded today is
- 10:17the third new show that i'm working on just this
- 10:20week and it's only tuesday like i am helping
- 10:23launch an ice cream related podcast and an astrological
- 10:27related podcast and it's just so much cool stuff
- 10:29that i I'm learning and experiencing on a weekly
- 10:32basis. And I just can't imagine doing anything
- 10:35else. I was talking with my neighbors last night
- 10:37and they're like, oh yeah, you're... seem to
- 10:39be doing good. We see you post on the internet
- 10:41all the time. I'm like, truly, I have become
- 10:43unemployable. I don't think I'll be able to do
- 10:46anything else for the foreseeable future other
- 10:49than what I'm doing right now, which is building
- 10:51and growing Abby Graves Productions. And I wake
- 10:54up every day excited about what the day is going
- 10:56to bring. And that's such a good feeling because
- 10:59I remember waking up and going to a job that
- 11:01just didn't feel like it was right or aligned
- 11:04for me. And now I get to wake up and essentially
- 11:08do what I want. I mean, I am working with clients
- 11:11and making what they want, but I'm doing it in
- 11:13a matter of how I can help serve people. So it's
- 11:18just been fun. Two years, full time. It's been
- 11:21more than that. on the side, but two years full
- 11:23-time of Abby Graves Productions is what we are
- 11:25celebrating this week. And I am just so grateful.
- 11:28Thank you for being along the ride with me and
- 11:30checking out this podcast. I didn't see myself
- 11:32making a podcast about podcasting when I started
- 11:36or went full -time in June of 2024, but here
- 11:38we are. And I am launching another podcast later
- 11:41this summer, which I'm really excited about kind
- 11:43of getting back to my roots of how I kind of
- 11:46started. this journey so be on the lookout for
- 11:49that i'm really excited i got some cool people
- 11:51lined up for that show and just yeah i'm thankful
- 11:54i'm very thankful for everything that has come
- 11:58in my life and two years full -time self -employed
- 12:01is nothing to turn your nose up at it's been
- 12:03a lot of long hours grinding it out, hoping things
- 12:07work out. And sometimes they did, sometimes they
- 12:09didn't, but that's just all part of the journey
- 12:11and I wouldn't have it any other way. So thank
- 12:13you for tuning into this episode of Abby the
- 12:15Podcast Lady. I will catch you next week on another
- 12:17episode. Bye.
