Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Gavin Grey: Europe correspondent on France's high speed rail network returning to normal after attack
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: UK and Europe correspondent. He's with US Live this morning.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Good morning, Devin. Has anyone claimed responsibility for this rilo
- 0:07Speaker 1: tech in France.
- 0:09Speaker 2: No, not yet and it has of course been something
- 0:12Speaker 2: that has rocked the early part of the Olympics. It
- 0:16Speaker 2: took place on Friday local time, just before the opening
- 0:20Speaker 2: ceremony of the Olympics. Things are getting back to normal slowly.
- 0:25Speaker 2: They hope to run a full service on Monday tomorrow
- 0:28Speaker 2: at our time, but at the moment, one in four
- 0:30Speaker 2: Eurostar trains they're the international services between London and Paris
- 0:35Speaker 2: using a high speed line in Paris, just one in
- 0:38Speaker 2: four of its trains that will not run, so cancelations down,
- 0:42Speaker 2: but still really quite considerable, bearing in mind most of
- 0:46Speaker 2: the trains are absolutely solidly booked up, so that's still
- 0:49Speaker 2: a problem. And the rail company said the main Western
- 0:54Speaker 2: line from Paris was operating, was normal, but three out
- 0:57Speaker 2: of four TGV trains those are the more high be
- 1:00Speaker 2: trained were running on the Northern line from mill with
- 1:03Speaker 2: no delays expected. But still, you know, that's only three
- 1:06Speaker 2: out of four. So rail workers did manage to foil
- 1:10Speaker 2: one attempt to destroy safety equipment on a fourth line,
- 1:13Speaker 2: but three of those high speed lines out of the
- 1:16Speaker 2: capital absolutely paralyzed. They should be all back to normal,
- 1:19Speaker 2: but not the start of the Olympics. They wanted nobody's
- 1:22Speaker 2: see at claim responsibility. Plenty of people pointing the finger
- 1:26Speaker 2: at Russian saboteurs.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Yeah, because you would think anyone else would climb responsibility.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Russia is the only one with an interest in not you.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Know what I mean?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Yeah, Hey, are you being softened up for a texts
- 1:38Speaker 1: and crisis in the UK? An you rickon?
- 1:40Speaker 2: I think we might be let me know in twenty
- 1:42Speaker 2: four hours. I'll come back to you, because we are
- 1:45Speaker 2: due to hear from our chancellor, the first female chancellor
- 1:47Speaker 2: in history, Rachel Reeves. She, of course part of the
- 1:50Speaker 2: new government here in the UK that started on the
- 1:53Speaker 2: fourth of July. Now, already they've been saying, oh, well,
- 1:57Speaker 2: we were left a much worse situation than we thought.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Things are not as good as we thought economically, and
- 2:05Speaker 2: they had always in the pre election campaigning said that
- 2:08Speaker 2: they would effectively continue on the same economic spending and
- 2:13Speaker 2: taxing as the preceding government. However, if this report out
- 2:18Speaker 2: tomorrow from the Chancellor reveals what we hear, which is
- 2:22Speaker 2: a massive black hole in the economy, then I think
- 2:25Speaker 2: we are going to see tax rises pretty quickly. It
- 2:28Speaker 2: is rumored by some that the black hole in the
- 2:31Speaker 2: economy could be as much as over forty five billion
- 2:36Speaker 2: New Zealand dollars a year, and of course yes they
- 2:39Speaker 2: can cut back on spending, but then they might be
- 2:41Speaker 2: looking at generally. Perhaps another one could be inheritance tax.
- 2:45Speaker 2: What you inherit when somebody dies and leaves you their money,
- 2:49Speaker 2: and possibly also capital gains, so that is the selling
- 2:53Speaker 2: of an asset and a tax on the growth. Yeah,
- 2:56Speaker 2: it could be bad news.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Could be bad news, could be one of those, all
- 3:00Speaker 1: of those. Kevin, Thanks so much for your time and
- 3:02Speaker 1: good luck.
