- 0:22SPEAKER_00: One of the most basic motifs of superhero stories is the importance of having a double life.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: When the hero puts on their costume, they are a courageous individual who rushes into battle to save lives.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: But in order to conceal their true identity, they adopt a mild-mannered persona that's the total opposite of their superhero personality.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: For example, Batman is secretly Bruce Wayne, an aloof billionaire playboy.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Susan Storm of the Fantastic Four is secretly a scientist.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Spider-Man is secretly Peter Parker, a nerdy newspaper reporter.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Superman is secretly Clark Kent, yet another nerdy newspaper reporter.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And Wonder Woman is secretly Diana Prince, an ambassador to the United Nations.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: But here's what's interesting: superheroes aren't the only ones who live double lives.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: We writers can develop an alter ego also if we're not careful.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: It's really easy to look bold and brave on the page, but how do you handle the challenges of real actual life?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Well, let me ask you a few tough questions, and I hope you won't be offended by these.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: These are just meant to get you to start thinking.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Are you dealing with your personal problems head on, or are you avoiding them?
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Do you engage in conversations about hard things, or do you tend to shut down when somebody confronts you with a truth that you don't want to hear?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Would the people who know you best describe you as brave, focused, determined, disciplined?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Or would they maybe say that you're aloof, timid, or uncaring?
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: So those are just a few questions we could toss a lot more in here, but those are just a few to get your mind thinking about this.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: You know, honestly, it's hard to face your real life problems instead of running away from them.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: This is why a lot of us get stuck sometimes, is we don't want to face our actual real problems, and instead we just want to veg out or run away from those problems.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: It's really easy also, if we want to get a little darker for a second, it's really easy to turn to substance abuse or other kinds of unhealthy patterns as we try to escape from reality.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Henry David Thoreau once said, how vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: You know, just because you're a writer, it doesn't give you the license to check out of real life.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: You've got to show up on the stage of life where the actual real action is happening.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Nobody's perfect, of course, but your writing should reflect the person that you're trying to become.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Somebody who's bold, somebody who's brave, and above all, somebody who is a true life superhero to the people you love the most.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Think about the past 24 hours of your life.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: What did you do that was brave, bold, or fearless?
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Just something to think about.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Hey, as always, my friend, thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
