- 0:27Speaker 1: I am not certain anything, and I mean anything makes
- 0:30Speaker 1: Taylor happier than having Mike Francesa on. Mike is joining us.
- 0:34Speaker 1: He's on the car phone. He's always on the car phone.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Check out his podcast, miked up wherever you get your podcast.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Good afternoon, Mike, How are you?
- 0:44Speaker 2: We're doing good here?
- 0:45Speaker 1: I am wondering if you don't mind, Mike, because I
- 0:49Speaker 1: was telling the guys, no one knows the market New
- 0:53Speaker 1: York better than you. No one knows that city and
- 0:55Speaker 1: what makes that city tick more so than you. And
- 0:59Speaker 1: so I am wonder if you might be able to
- 1:01Speaker 1: explain to Taylor, to Izzy, to mikey A, to the
- 1:05Speaker 1: audience what it would mean to New York and that
- 1:08Speaker 1: market and the city and the fans if the Knicks
- 1:11Speaker 1: were to actually win an NBA championship.
- 1:14Speaker 3: It would be overwhelming, absolutely overwhelming. When the Knicks win,
- 1:20Speaker 3: which is obviously extremely rare, or when they're very good,
- 1:24Speaker 3: which is obviously extremely rare, which we'll find out if
- 1:28Speaker 3: they are this year, you know, they could get to
- 1:31Speaker 3: the finals. I don't think they can win it. I
- 1:33Speaker 3: don't think anybody's beating Oklahoma City. But and there's no
- 1:37Speaker 3: guarantee they're going to beat anybody in the East that's left,
- 1:41Speaker 3: although they'll win the Atlanta series. But back to your question.
- 1:46Speaker 3: The hole that the Knicks have, especially on the inner City,
- 1:51Speaker 3: especially on Manhattan, Yes, is so overwhelming that you cannot
- 1:57Speaker 3: even imagine the impact. It would be unbelievable. It would
- 2:02Speaker 3: be like Christmas and New Year's Eve and any of
- 2:05Speaker 3: the holiday you want to put in the all wrapped
- 2:08Speaker 3: into one in the greatest city in the world. So, yes,
- 2:11Speaker 3: the impact would be overwhelming. That's how big it is.
- 2:16Speaker 3: You know. We can ignore the Knicks, and the city
- 2:19Speaker 3: is good at ignoring the Nicks when they're terrible, But
- 2:22Speaker 3: when they are a factor, when they are a team
- 2:27Speaker 3: or a playoff contender, they have a grip on the
- 2:30Speaker 3: city that is utterly enormous, as big as anything the
- 2:34Speaker 3: Yankees have, as big as anything the Giants have. And
- 2:38Speaker 3: when you start in New York, you start Yankees Giants
- 2:41Speaker 3: and work your way down from there. But when the
- 2:43Speaker 3: Knicks are good, nothing's bigger.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Mike Taylor from Rockland County, first time, long time, I'm wondering,
- 2:50Speaker 4: do you think Jalen. I'm wondering, do you think Jalen
- 2:53Speaker 4: Brunson is already on the Mount Rushmore of New York Knicks.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Always going to tear your head off of Jesus.
- 2:58Speaker 3: He is not. Okay, if you're going to compare him
- 3:01Speaker 3: to Willis Reid, or compare him to Walt Frazier, or
- 3:06Speaker 3: compare him to the legendary guys who won championships here,
- 3:11Speaker 3: he's not. He is not. That would be unfair to
- 3:14Speaker 3: do that. He has absolutely taken the town by storm.
- 3:20Speaker 3: He is exceedingly popular. The Knicks are an extremely hot ticket.
- 3:26Speaker 3: See the Knicks is see the Garden when the Knicks
- 3:29Speaker 3: are good is as trendy as New York City can be.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Being seen there for the average guy. First of all,
- 3:38Speaker 3: there's a lot of diehard Nick fans, and there's a
- 3:39Speaker 3: lot of celebrity diehard Nick fans. They're really good Nick fans.
- 3:42Speaker 3: They are you know, cham Is good. I know Chalom,
- 3:44Speaker 3: he's good. He's a good Knick fan. Okay. The guys
- 3:46Speaker 3: who go there and go to all the games, they're
- 3:48Speaker 3: good Knick fans. They care about the Knicks. So they're
- 3:51Speaker 3: not front runners or anything, but the grip that this
- 3:55Speaker 3: the Knicks have on the entire city, but especially the Manhattan.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Pot is unbelievable. It is overwhelming. And listen, the only
- 4:06Speaker 3: reason other people don't go is they can't afford it.
- 4:07Speaker 3: The tickets are unbelievably expensive for the Knicks.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Crazy. Yep. What do we do with Mike Brown here?
- 4:14Speaker 1: If he doesn't make it to the Eastern Conference finals, Mike,
- 4:16Speaker 1: he'd be fired.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Wow.
- 4:18Speaker 3: See, I think this is makeover time for the Knicks.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I think that if they don't win it, win it,
- 4:27Speaker 3: and I'll pull back if they If they make the
- 4:30Speaker 3: finals and loses in six games or something, right and
- 4:36Speaker 3: put a decent showing it in the finals, Okay, I
- 4:39Speaker 3: think they could run it back. But barring that, I
- 4:43Speaker 3: think anything short of that, and especially not making the finals,
- 4:47Speaker 3: let's put it that way, beating getting beatn East, they
- 4:50Speaker 3: get beating East. I think his job this is absolutely
- 4:54Speaker 3: on the line, and I think there's a very good
- 4:57Speaker 3: chance they will try to completely make over the team.
- 4:59Speaker 5: And I I mean Giannis, hmm, that's interesting.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yes, fire Mike Brown if they get If they don't
- 5:07Speaker 1: get to the Eastern Conference, I'm with.
- 5:09Speaker 2: You on that.
- 5:09Speaker 5: By the way, when Brown took the job, he understood
- 5:12Speaker 5: the deal he was He was told we think you
- 5:15Speaker 5: can take us to the next wrong understand, that's what
- 5:18Speaker 5: you were asking you to do.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Anything short of that will will be seen as you're
- 5:22Speaker 3: failing to do your job. I'm sure that's what they
- 5:24Speaker 3: told them.
- 5:25Speaker 6: All right, Mike, I'm looking at this sort of consensus
- 5:28Speaker 6: on the Mount rushmore of Nicks, Right, So you.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Got Walt Fraser, Willis Reed, Patrick Ewing Boom.
- 5:32Speaker 6: You got to put those up there.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Yeah, the fourth one is up for grabs. I don't
- 5:36Speaker 2: know how much. There's no way you're going to convince Jal.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Or Jal. I love the Villainova teams. Jay Writ's a
- 5:46Speaker 3: good friend, has been forever. I know those teams very much,
- 5:51Speaker 3: very well. I was around those teams. The bottom line is,
- 5:55Speaker 3: I have great respect for what Bunson's accomplished, But to
- 5:58Speaker 3: put him with the guys who want championships here, to
- 6:01Speaker 3: put him with that team, and that team is seen
- 6:04Speaker 3: as okay, as seen as a unit. They are not
- 6:08Speaker 3: seen as just Read and Fraser. They are seen as
- 6:13Speaker 3: Reed and Fraser and de Busher and Bradley and dip
- 6:17Speaker 3: Bonnet and Red Holtzman and the Minute Men. They are canonized,
- 6:23Speaker 3: they are deified, and until you do what they did.
- 6:27Speaker 3: You will not in any way join them up there.
- 6:32Speaker 2: We have a caller.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Let's go out to mikey a who is in Westchester today.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Mike Yego, haad, you're on with the great Mike FRANCESSA.
- 6:39Speaker 7: How you doing, Mike, Mike Long Island.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Listen.
- 6:43Speaker 7: I got a question. I'm arguing with my buddy Taylor.
- 6:46Speaker 7: He says the Yankees are retiring too many numbers. I
- 6:49Speaker 7: want to get your thoughts on that. And with a
- 6:51Speaker 7: quick follow up of who gets a better ovation at
- 6:53Speaker 7: Yankee Stadium, Bernie Williams or Paul O'Neill.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Oh wow, uh Bernie Williams. The amazing thing is how
- 7:02Speaker 3: big Mattingly still is. Mattingly's is so big, it's as
- 7:05Speaker 3: big as Geeta's. So Manningly is revered. I mean, he's beloved.
- 7:10Speaker 3: People don't understand how popular Mattingly is. I've been in
- 7:13Speaker 3: places with matting Lee and it's amazing how popular he is. Incredibly,
- 7:18Speaker 3: he is worshiped. He really is. Nothing's mantal but and
- 7:22Speaker 3: Geeta is enormous. But you have no idea how big
- 7:26Speaker 3: Manningly is. But on those two, listen, they have great
- 7:29Speaker 3: respect for Paul O'Neill. They love Poul O'Neill, but Bernie,
- 7:34Speaker 3: I would say, is more popular. As far as the numbers,
- 7:40Speaker 3: whoever's arguing that they have retired too many numbers has
- 7:44Speaker 3: listened to me for a long time because I only
- 7:47Speaker 3: hire numbers for immortal players. Okay, if you're Ricky Jackson,
- 7:53Speaker 3: you'll never get your number retired here, okay, never, okay never, Okay,
- 7:57Speaker 3: I can go down the list. When I was a kid, three, four,
- 8:01Speaker 3: and five were retired.
- 8:04Speaker 5: That was it.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Then came Anne obviously four. Okay, go down the list.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Mariano Jeeta deserve it in every way. The other things
- 8:13Speaker 3: are nothing more than marketing and an ability to have
- 8:17Speaker 3: days for the fans. That's all it is. It is
- 8:19Speaker 3: utter nonsense, and they have completely ruined the idea of
- 8:23Speaker 3: retired numbers by retiring so many numbers. It's embarrassing.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Thank you and Taylor, how do you feel? I mean
- 8:30Speaker 2: he feels good?
- 8:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel so good, Mike, because I've been arguing
- 8:34Speaker 4: this with Cci Sabbathi and Mikey's like, he's a great
- 8:37Speaker 4: Yankee and I'm saying I'm not saying he's not a
- 8:39Speaker 4: great Yankee. Can't retire his number.
- 8:42Speaker 3: If I was, if I were in charge of retired numbers,
- 8:47Speaker 3: I was oous obviously, three, four, five, seven, don't have
- 8:52Speaker 3: anything to discuss. Eight, absolutely, sixteen, absolutely Thurman because of
- 8:58Speaker 3: the tragic death of the captain.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Fifty.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yes, Mariano Jeter absolutely. Other than that, everybody else can
- 9:04Speaker 3: wait in line.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 5: C C.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Sabbathia joining us tomorrow on the show.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Want to do with Sabathia, I would know.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I'm with you, Mike, I agree, I led against it.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yes, listen if you if you're not a Hall of Famer, right, Okay,
- 9:21Speaker 3: I'm not retiring your number.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yep, I'd be perfectly fine with you being the
- 9:26Speaker 1: guy in charge of whose number gets retired and who's
- 9:29Speaker 1: does it.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I would should that should be you?
- 9:31Speaker 3: Yes, you had to play almost every bit of Now
- 9:35Speaker 3: it's hard to play every bit, but you had to
- 9:36Speaker 3: play basically eighty to ninety per cent of your career
- 9:38Speaker 3: with the Yankees to get your number retitle.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Sorry, yeah, yeah, I love it. This is so good, Taylor.
- 9:44Speaker 1: You're good with him deciding who gets in and who doesn't.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Yes, this is what.
- 9:51Speaker 3: If the Yankees wear more than the uniforms they wear now.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I will be so embarrassed because listen, the Yankees continue
- 9:59Speaker 3: to chip away at everything that has always made them
- 10:01Speaker 3: the Yankees. Okay, stop, stop, don't put any signage on
- 10:05Speaker 3: the uniforms, and don't ever put names on the uniforms,
- 10:09Speaker 3: and don't change the uniforms. One on the road, one
- 10:13Speaker 3: at home, not forty two uniforms that look like World
- 10:16Speaker 3: Softball League teams. Okay, I mean or Joe's auto garage.
- 10:21Speaker 3: You know, give me a break. These uniforms are embarrassing,
- 10:24Speaker 3: and that's what's made the Yankees the Yankees. To me,
- 10:27Speaker 3: there are two great uniforms in baseball, the Yankees and
- 10:30Speaker 3: the Dodgers' home uniform.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Yeah, this is this is what I was just about
- 10:34Speaker 4: to say, Like, these are the problems that Yankee fans have,
- 10:38Speaker 4: great problems to have.
- 10:39Speaker 3: You look across town when you're going, well, let's be honest, listen,
- 10:42Speaker 3: power pitching, power hitting, When the Yankees have that, they're
- 10:45Speaker 3: the Yankees right now. They have power pitching, they have
- 10:49Speaker 3: power hitting. When they're that, they're good. Now. They have
- 10:52Speaker 3: to remember that once in a while, when you get
- 10:55Speaker 3: not Toby, you gotta perform. Okay, that has stopped happening.
- 10:59Speaker 3: They have to win in a World Series. Do you
- 11:01Speaker 3: know how different the Yankees would be right now if
- 11:03Speaker 3: they hadn't won it on nine? That on nine is
- 11:06Speaker 3: so big it changed careers. Catherin wouldn't be here, managers
- 11:11Speaker 3: wouldn't be here, players wouldn't have the same impact everything
- 11:15Speaker 3: that it saved them winning that World Series. Because let's
- 11:19Speaker 3: be honest, they blew a couple of World Series along
- 11:22Speaker 3: the way in the early two thousands, and they haven't
- 11:25Speaker 3: won in a long long time. The Yankees need to
- 11:27Speaker 3: win a World Series. But it's not gonna be like
- 11:30Speaker 3: the Mets, which right now is a joke. What's gonna
- 11:32Speaker 3: happen now in New York is this? Unless the Mets
- 11:34Speaker 3: do something radical, you are gonna have an August Day.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Here's an August Day this year forty six thousand, in
- 11:40Speaker 3: an afternoon game against the Blue Jays for the Yankees
- 11:43Speaker 3: and archery practice at City Fielder.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna take listeners behind the scenes here. Taylor was
- 11:53Speaker 1: using that Yankee stuff as a transition to ask about
- 11:56Speaker 1: the crosstown team, the New York Medden, whether or not,
- 11:59Speaker 1: but Mike didn't let him because we're talking Yankees and
- 12:02Speaker 1: Mike wants to cut you off. He cut you off
- 12:03Speaker 1: because he's the greatest to ever do this. Does Mendoza
- 12:06Speaker 1: make it the year.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Here, Mike, he wouldn't have made the weekend if it
- 12:10Speaker 3: were me. And they needed to make a change, and
- 12:16Speaker 3: they got This is almost a Kansas City Chief situation.
- 12:20Speaker 3: They got a great guy, a great manager. I think
- 12:26Speaker 3: the best management baseball, without any question is Frank ConA.
- 12:29Speaker 3: It's not even close. The rest fall behind that. Colora
- 12:33Speaker 3: is a tremendous manager. He is a gifted, generational manager.
- 12:38Speaker 3: All right. The Phillies try to hire him already, they'll
- 12:40Speaker 3: probably try to go back and hire him again. The
- 12:42Speaker 3: Mets should have already made their move on Cora. If
- 12:45Speaker 3: you didn't want to come till for a month, or
- 12:46Speaker 3: he didn't want to come till next year, they still
- 12:49Speaker 3: should have locked them up and then put an inter
- 12:50Speaker 3: him in. I have nothing against Mendoza. Everyone says he's
- 12:54Speaker 3: a nice man. I don't know him very well, and
- 12:56Speaker 3: I would say this, he right now doesn't have any
- 13:00Speaker 3: answers And you can't dump the entire team. You'd like to,
- 13:03Speaker 3: but you can't, so that's why you make a change there.
- 13:07Speaker 3: But I wouldn't just make a change there. I would
- 13:09Speaker 3: also make a change in personnel because the last year
- 13:13Speaker 3: they were so proud of the fact that they really
- 13:15Speaker 3: took their attendance from like eighteenth to fourth or eighteenth
- 13:19Speaker 3: to third, whatever it finished up, and they were very
- 13:21Speaker 3: proud of that, and the big part of that was
- 13:23Speaker 3: obviously Soto. But they played terribly and this manager is
- 13:27Speaker 3: thirty five games under since late last season. It's not
- 13:30Speaker 3: just this year, it's last year too, and he's had
- 13:33Speaker 3: bad listen Planco hasn't played. Lindor's out probably going to
- 13:37Speaker 3: be two months. Soto got hurt. We understand all this.
- 13:40Speaker 3: A lot of guys haven't performed, but shit hasn't been yet.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Although I think you'll be fine. The bottom line is
- 13:46Speaker 3: you have to be reactionary. When you are a cone
- 13:50Speaker 3: with deep pockets, you have to be reactionary. Sometimes the
- 13:54Speaker 3: team puts you in a spot where you have to react.
- 13:58Speaker 3: The fact that they haven't reacted showed that they don't
- 14:00Speaker 3: have a clue of what they're doing.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Mike, you've been covering the NFL draft for a LAUNI forever,
- 14:16Speaker 1: really uh, And we just had mel Kuiper junior on
- 14:19Speaker 1: and we were marveling and Melon.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I used to I used to give Mel a real
- 14:23Speaker 3: hot time in the beginning, in the early years, and
- 14:27Speaker 3: I know it bothered him. But let me say this,
- 14:29Speaker 3: Mel deserves an incredible amount of credit because he created
- 14:33Speaker 3: a cottage industry for so many people, so many people
- 14:36Speaker 3: now make their living. They should all put a plaque
- 14:39Speaker 3: up to Mel because he created that whole thing.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a trailblazer.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But and so you know, I was telling Mel that,
- 14:47Speaker 1: you know, you see eight hundred thousand plus people showing
- 14:49Speaker 1: up to an NFL draft. Yeah, and Mel saw it
- 14:53Speaker 1: before anyone else. It's not surprising to Mel. I'm wondering,
- 14:56Speaker 1: is it surprising to you, Mike?
- 14:58Speaker 3: They've done the end the The NFL is great at marketing.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Let's be honest. There are those are the greediest humans
- 15:03Speaker 3: who have ever crossed the planet. Okay, but they are
- 15:07Speaker 3: great at marketing. And the fact that they can turn
- 15:10Speaker 3: what is really a nonsports event into a cultural event
- 15:16Speaker 3: of enormous size across many channels and drawing hundreds and
- 15:24Speaker 3: hundreds of thousands of people who are so excited to
- 15:27Speaker 3: be there. Okay, it is remarkable how well they've marketed that.
- 15:34Speaker 3: I don't think anything in our lifetime has been marketed
- 15:36Speaker 3: as well as the NFL.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Mike, what do you think about the NCAA expanding the
- 15:42Speaker 4: tournament to I believe seventy sixteen?
- 15:44Speaker 3: Let me he hates like, throw up over it? Okay, yes, okay,
- 15:51Speaker 3: you know why it happens and how happens. For one reason,
- 15:53Speaker 3: the NCAA has nothing to do anymore. The NCAA has
- 15:55Speaker 3: no power anymore, and the only thing they generate income
- 15:58Speaker 3: on is championships. And that's the biggie. This is the
- 16:02Speaker 3: one that produces a fortune. And that's why more teams
- 16:05Speaker 3: means more games, which means more money. And that's what
- 16:09Speaker 3: they are controlling, and that's why they are adding it.
- 16:12Speaker 3: There is not a reason in the world, not a
- 16:14Speaker 3: reason in the world, why that should be more than
- 16:16Speaker 3: a sixty fourteen tournament.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Mike Francesa is with us A micd Up check out
- 16:22Speaker 1: his podcast wherever you get your podcast.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Just back to the draft for a second. What do
- 16:25Speaker 2: you make of Harbaugh's first draft as a Giants head coach.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Listen, I always pick a player that I really like.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Now I picked a player this year that so many
- 16:37Speaker 3: people jumped on the bandwagon. I was almost like didn't
- 16:39Speaker 3: want to be there, and that was Caleb down. I
- 16:43Speaker 3: would have liked to see him, and I understand why
- 16:44Speaker 3: the Giants didn't get him. I do because you have
- 16:49Speaker 3: to first decide how are you gonna use him? Are
- 16:51Speaker 3: you gonna play him as a safety? Are you gonna
- 16:53Speaker 3: bring him to the line of scrimmagey, You're to give
- 16:54Speaker 3: him multipurpose. You're going to turn him into Polomono, You're
- 16:58Speaker 3: going to turn him into Ed Reed? What are you
- 16:59Speaker 3: gonna turn him into? So there's a lot of different
- 17:02Speaker 3: ways to use him. He's going to be a great player.
- 17:04Speaker 3: I don't think there's any questions. The fact they didn't
- 17:08Speaker 3: think the first player would drop into their lap. They
- 17:12Speaker 3: never thought he would make it five and he did.
- 17:14Speaker 3: He's a very talented individual. Now he's not a finished
- 17:16Speaker 3: product by any stretch, but he's a very talented individual.
- 17:19Speaker 3: And then getting a big lineman, I think anything they
- 17:22Speaker 3: can do to protect that. And let me say this,
- 17:25Speaker 3: if people don't see this, the Giants are going to
- 17:29Speaker 3: run the football. Pubo wants to run the football. He's
- 17:32Speaker 3: got a full back. He brings a fullback in and
- 17:34Speaker 3: pays some good money. He wants a big offensive line.
- 17:37Speaker 3: He's got a quarterback that can run. He's got some
- 17:40Speaker 3: running backs he can use. Although he doesn't have a
- 17:41Speaker 3: great running back, He's got solid running backs. And I
- 17:43Speaker 3: love Skataboo. I just hope he can stay healthy. I
- 17:46Speaker 3: don't know if he can, but he's a crazy man.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I hope he can stay healthy. They are going to
- 17:50Speaker 3: run the football. They are going to play a tight
- 17:53Speaker 3: end in the slot on a lot of plays. They
- 17:55Speaker 3: are going to be a power team. But here's the
- 17:58Speaker 3: most important thing. The Giant now with Harbor, are now
- 18:03Speaker 3: back to being a real football organization for the first
- 18:08Speaker 3: time in over a decade. And if you know the
- 18:11Speaker 3: Giants and you've been around the Giants and you understand
- 18:14Speaker 3: the Giants and I do, that is such a welcome thing.
- 18:19Speaker 3: They now have a real, died in the world, honest
- 18:24Speaker 3: to goodness football leader running the franchise in every way.
- 18:29Speaker 3: So the Giants are back. I think they will be
- 18:33Speaker 3: back from day one. I think they will fight for
- 18:36Speaker 3: the playoffs this year. I think the Giants under Harble
- 18:40Speaker 3: are back. If they had not hired him, I would
- 18:43Speaker 3: have thought it was the greatest mistake they could have
- 18:45Speaker 3: ever made, and maybe their last opportunity to get out
- 18:48Speaker 3: of this abyss that they've been in. I think they
- 18:50Speaker 3: are now back to being a legitimate football team again.
- 18:55Speaker 6: Maybe they expand the NFL playoffs more teams than that thing.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I can tell you who's not back, Mike, the Jets.
- 19:02Speaker 1: They're never back, and so I am. But I like
- 19:05Speaker 1: the draft, Mike.
- 19:06Speaker 3: They had a good draft, I know.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I know. I hate when I think that, though, you
- 19:10Speaker 2: know what I'm saying.
- 19:12Speaker 3: They brought in really good players. Now the question is
- 19:15Speaker 3: do they know what to do with them? You know,
- 19:18Speaker 3: having Right there at least gives me a sentilla of
- 19:22Speaker 3: hope because last year they were probably as mixed up
- 19:28Speaker 3: and confused the coaching staff as I've ever seen. Okay,
- 19:31Speaker 3: they had no idea what they were doing, and I
- 19:34Speaker 3: still don't know that they know what they're doing. But
- 19:36Speaker 3: I think Right knows what he's doing from an offensive standpoint,
- 19:40Speaker 3: and they now have weapons. I don't like either quarterback
- 19:45Speaker 3: that they're thinking about playing with, so that's obviously an issue.
- 19:50Speaker 3: But they have big offensive linemen, they have an infrastructure there,
- 19:55Speaker 3: they have a running back, they have now two tight
- 19:59Speaker 3: ends and the kid from Oregon is an unique talent
- 20:01Speaker 3: if you get if you know how to use them properly.
- 20:04Speaker 3: I like the players they brought in from Indiana. They
- 20:07Speaker 3: brought in, they brought in guys were all from top
- 20:10Speaker 3: five programs. Their first four picks were all top five
- 20:12Speaker 3: programs last year, including two who played for Indiana. I
- 20:16Speaker 3: like what they did. I thought they had a very
- 20:18Speaker 3: very good draft. But listen, a lot of bad teams
- 20:22Speaker 3: have good drafts and then screw it up. So this
- 20:25Speaker 3: is only stage one. They've got to prove now that
- 20:27Speaker 3: they can put one foot in front of the other.
- 20:29Speaker 3: We don't know that they can do that yet, Mike.
- 20:32Speaker 4: We can't do an nd season tournament with the NFL
- 20:34Speaker 4: for obvious reasons. But would you be in favor of
- 20:36Speaker 4: the NFL recognizing a winner of the draft. Maybe if
- 20:38Speaker 4: mel kiper picks.
- 20:41Speaker 3: I listen, the idea of anybody acting like they know
- 20:46Speaker 3: who wins the draft right after the draft is maybe
- 20:50Speaker 3: the dumbest premise in the history of sports. Okay, you
- 20:54Speaker 3: don't know for three years whether you had a good
- 20:57Speaker 3: draft or not. Okay, you're going to give back draft
- 21:00Speaker 3: first of all, as many all pros and Pro bo
- 21:03Speaker 3: players are picked in the third round as picked in
- 21:05Speaker 3: the first round. So the idea that you know right away,
- 21:09Speaker 3: it's nonsense. It's complete, utter nonsense. You don't know there
- 21:14Speaker 3: are no givens. Yes, are there players who are going
- 21:17Speaker 3: to make it. Of course you know that there's always
- 21:20Speaker 3: going to be a handful of them, and they're usually
- 21:22Speaker 3: go in the first three picks. But the point is
- 21:25Speaker 3: you don't know about it. The idea grades after draft
- 21:28Speaker 3: is the dumbest premise, and everybody does it, but it's
- 21:30Speaker 3: the dumbest thing in the world. Nobody know what they're
- 21:34Speaker 3: going what it should be as a grade on how
- 21:36Speaker 3: you drafted, Okay, not how your team is going the
- 21:41Speaker 3: players you brought in are going to do, because there's
- 21:42Speaker 3: no way of knowing that. It takes three years to
- 21:45Speaker 3: really get a good handle on a draft.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Yep, last question, miked up wherever you get your podcast,
- 21:51Speaker 1: the great Mike Francessa is with us.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Is there anything Lebron James could do?
- 21:56Speaker 1: Mike the rest of the way here where you would
- 21:58Speaker 1: then say to yourself, you know what, Lebron had a
- 22:01Speaker 1: better career than Michael Jordan.
- 22:02Speaker 3: No, first of all, this is a silly thing too.
- 22:06Speaker 3: For this reason, they are such utterly different players. They
- 22:10Speaker 3: have always been utterly different players. Here is what Lebron
- 22:14Speaker 3: has done. He has stayed better for longer than Jordan did,
- 22:21Speaker 3: the idea that he can still play his Game three
- 22:26Speaker 3: and just coming off knee surgery. So I've been watching everything,
- 22:30Speaker 3: which I do anyway, but I mean i've been. I
- 22:32Speaker 3: watched that game and I was utterly amazed that he
- 22:34Speaker 3: could play forty five minutes and play the way he did.
- 22:37Speaker 3: I knew he'd have nothing in Game four because he
- 22:39Speaker 3: was exhausted after Game three. You get all these stands up.
- 22:43Speaker 3: He is, without question, a top three five whatever you
- 22:49Speaker 3: want to talk about player of all time. But his
- 22:52Speaker 3: greatest strength is what he brings to a team. Also,
- 22:57Speaker 3: his game is nuanced. The best thing he does is pass.
- 23:02Speaker 3: He is not what Jordan was. Jordan is a legitimate
- 23:08Speaker 3: two guard. He was a take the last shot, be
- 23:12Speaker 3: the high scorer, leads the team in shots every single night,
- 23:16Speaker 3: be that volume player, be fearless, and be in every
- 23:22Speaker 3: way a winner. That's what Jordan was. Lebron James is
- 23:25Speaker 3: a player without a position. He can play the one,
- 23:28Speaker 3: he could play the two, can play the three, he
- 23:29Speaker 3: can play the four. The bottom line is Lebron James
- 23:32Speaker 3: is a lot more like what Magic Johnson than he
- 23:35Speaker 3: is like Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan is much more like
- 23:38Speaker 3: Kobe Bryant than he is like Lebron James. They are
- 23:41Speaker 3: very different players. But to take away Lebron's greatness is ridiculous.
- 23:45Speaker 3: He is, without question, without question, one of the greatest
- 23:49Speaker 3: players in the history of the NBA. And if anyone
- 23:51Speaker 3: argues that they're.
- 23:52Speaker 2: This is just stupid, right Mike, you are not stupid.
- 23:57Speaker 2: You are smart.
- 23:57Speaker 1: You're the Pope, and you should be deciding which Yankee
- 24:00Speaker 1: have their numbers retired at Yankees too.
- 24:02Speaker 3: It's too late for that because they're already up there
- 24:04Speaker 3: like a bingo card.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You could take them down. You can take it down, Mike.
- 24:09Speaker 2: We'll let you take them down.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Yes, no, you can't take them down. You can't do
- 24:13Speaker 3: that to the guys. But you know what, I like
- 24:15Speaker 3: the days where it was just, you know, a couple
- 24:17Speaker 3: of numbers. I think in every town there should only
- 24:20Speaker 3: be a couple of numbers retired, and the Yankees has
- 24:22Speaker 3: had more than anybody else, without question. And I'm telling
- 24:25Speaker 3: you protect the uniforms. If the Yankees go that way
- 24:29Speaker 3: and they're talking now about extra uniforms on the road,
- 24:32Speaker 3: Oh please don't. Hey. They do everything they can to
- 24:36Speaker 3: tchip away at what makes the Yankees the Yankees. That's
- 24:39Speaker 3: what's said.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Yeah, miked up wherever you get your podcast, Mike Francesa.
- 24:44Speaker 1: We appreciate the time, as zoeys. The fact that you
- 24:46Speaker 1: carve out any sort of time for us is amazing.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Thank you for doing.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Thank you guys, take care byde All right, thank.
- 24:50Speaker 2: You, Mike. That was quick. Uh let's just keep it
- 24:52Speaker 2: here for a second. Uh you listen.
- 24:54Speaker 1: The audience has no idea how badly is He wanted
- 24:57Speaker 1: to argue with Mike about.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Jordan and Lebron. He had fifteen follow ups in.
- 25:02Speaker 1: The group text year and I said, is he If
- 25:04Speaker 1: you ruin this, I am going to kill you.
- 25:06Speaker 6: I wasn't gonna touch it, but I did have to
- 25:09Speaker 6: go all caps on some of my chat discussions because
- 25:11Speaker 6: it was driving me nuts.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And I responded with the ma tumbo finger emoji.
- 25:19Speaker 7: He agreed with Taylor on everything everything.
- 25:22Speaker 6: Yes, by the way, what do we think about this?
- 25:24Speaker 6: Not retired numbers but giving a number a vacation they
- 25:28Speaker 6: go up there for five ten years, bring it on
- 25:31Speaker 6: back down. Now we can use that number again.
- 25:33Speaker 2: So the jersey gets a cup of coffee, is what
- 25:35Speaker 2: you're saying.
- 25:35Speaker 6: Yeah, it's just a little Jersey vacation.
- 25:37Speaker 2: I think that's I.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Don't hate this.
- 25:38Speaker 2: I don't hate you doing there. Yes, I'm good with that.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Like, hey, Bernie, we're gonna put your number up there,
- 25:43Speaker 1: and then it's coming down and too you.
- 25:44Speaker 6: We're gonna need it in a couple of maybe in
- 25:46Speaker 6: a decade, two years or whatever, but it'll be it'll
- 25:48Speaker 6: be celebrated for a while.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Except for mix No no, no, no.
- 25:52Speaker 6: Some of them stay up there for good, the retired jerseys,
- 25:55Speaker 6: and then there were vacations.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Two, three, four five, They stay up there forever.
- 25:58Speaker 7: Yeah, how about this, It gets retired until that person
- 26:05Speaker 7: passes m I don't like that.
- 26:08Speaker 6: I don't like that because then I got to wear
- 26:09Speaker 6: a dead person's number forever.
- 26:11Speaker 1: And then, you know, it feels like you're doing it,
- 26:13Speaker 1: like do it when they're alive.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like, oh yeah, let's let's let do it
- 26:18Speaker 2: behind their backs.
- 26:19Speaker 1: I mean, they can't fight it. There's nothing they could do.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I mean, the poor family, they're.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Gonna go to their deathbed thinking Wow, I was an
- 26:24Speaker 6: all time great, and then as soon as they died, Nope,
- 26:26Speaker 6: you were just on vacation.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Get that number down.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Qualification.
- 26:33Speaker 2: You also got the mutumbo emoji.
- 26:37Speaker 4: I like Mikey throwing that out because we have a
- 26:40Speaker 4: we have a theory here, no bad idea. So as
- 26:43Speaker 4: much as we might as much as we might not
- 26:46Speaker 4: have liked that idea, we have to encourage Mikey to
- 26:49Speaker 4: keep shooting because we're gonna need it in the future.
- 26:52Speaker 7: I'm trying to build on something. I'm trying to I'm
- 26:54Speaker 7: trying to figure it out. We're trying to get the
- 26:56Speaker 7: ball rolling.
- 26:57Speaker 1: There's only been one bad idea here in the three
- 27:00Speaker 1: of the show, and it's not even an idea, it's
- 27:02Speaker 1: an opinion.
- 27:02Speaker 2: It's Taylor's opinion of not trading schemes for tangent. Bruco
- 27:07Speaker 2: liked it. I didn't know what other bad idea to
- 27:12Speaker 2: come up with.
