- 2:12I want to get to today. Delicate Jbacres is going to join us.
- 2:14Of course, there's an event being held tonight. If you are one of
- 2:16the victims of the storms of not only the second of April, but also
- 2:21April eleventh, there's going to be a community event held tonight out at Sandplant
- 2:24Road, and Delicate Acres is going to join us to talk about that.
- 2:28It's the whole idea behind this is to try to get information out to people
- 2:31how you can fill out damage assessments and things of that nature. So we're
- 2:36going to talk to Delicate Acres about that. Also, there's a program that's
- 2:40this is a nationwide program, but they're going to be doing an event in
- 2:44Charleston here in a couple of weeks and it's called Guns to Gardens and I'm
- 2:47going to talk about that a little bit later on as well. Dude,
- 2:51want to start with the news. We have a story posted a domestic incident
- 2:54in the Chilian area has led to a man dying and a woman to being
- 2:58hospitalized and have in shilling. Around one fifty this morning, female victims stabbed.
- 3:04According to Canawa County Sheriff's Department, Chief Deputy Joe Crawford and his first
- 3:07responders were tending to the victim, a man barricaded himself into the residents and
- 3:13had a gun out threatening deputies. Well you know that that never turns out
- 3:16well, and the deputies shot and killed him. Now last report, the
- 3:21woman was hospitalized at CAMC General where she was undergoing surgery. The investigation on
- 3:25that continues. Chris Lawrence as the story posted now at what we do know
- 3:29at this point at wv metronews dot com. Let me welcome in our good
- 3:35friend Millie Snyder from the Shape Show, and I'm so glad to be here.
- 3:38Thank you. Do you like what we're doing with the place here?
- 3:42Yes? I think the boxes are beautiful, We have a we have a
- 3:45you know, the studio is a pretty good sized studio, old television studio.
- 3:47At one point it really well, it's yeah, this was one of
- 3:51Ron Hughes tells me because Ron was here, you know, in nineteen twenty
- 3:53one, and apparently this is complimentary. I well, you know we're gonna
- 4:00workers that way. So apparently at one time this was the home of w
- 4:03c HS Television. Now we are you know, not related in any any
- 4:08form, uh, but they're transforming this place, miss Milly and what well,
- 4:13well, you know, for years we were West Virginia Radio Corporation.
- 4:15The name was changed is w v RC Media now because we're multimedia from digital
- 4:20to and so in the coming months, Millie, when you come in and
- 4:26you've missed us once a month to do this show, you're gonna be on
- 4:29camera on television because this is it'll be just like talk line. If you
- 4:32watch Hoppy at ten o six and you see, uh, you know the
- 4:35nice studio in mortgage out, we're in the process of doing that here.
- 4:40So it looked kind of like only prayer play pray for a good hair day.
- 4:44It only well, you always have good It kind of looks like a
- 4:46Chris Lawrence sid It kind of looks like a home Depot store room in here
- 4:48right now with all these boxes we've got in here. But don't say Home
- 4:51Deepot. It's all from Lows. Well, yeah, we can't say.
- 4:55Probably should have said lows. But uh, but anyway, yeah, and
- 4:58so we got big, big doings. Are we doing everything in this place?
- 5:01Man? I mean all the studios are changing, and I'm good they're
- 5:05going to be right here in the middle of allive. I love it all
- 5:08right. I gotta take care one piece of business with you first, do
- 5:12it all right, because I know you got a lot to cover. So
- 5:15I don't know if you remember the show Saturday Night Live. Of course it's
- 5:17still on the back in the eighties, Saturday Night Live did a bit when
- 5:23they it was a parody commercial. Some of the funny stuff they do and
- 5:26still do is parody commercial. They did a parody commercial about all of these
- 5:30cereals that were promoting digestive health at that time. This is you know,
- 5:34the Totals and the you know, so on and so forth. Well,
- 5:39they did a parody commercial of a cereal that they called colon Blow. I
- 5:46know which one you're talking about. So I got a buddy of mine who
- 5:48shall remain nameless. Every time you're on the show, he says, I'll
- 5:54give you twenty dollars if you can have Millie Snyders say the words colon Blow.
- 5:59I'll give you ten of it. If you say the words colon blow,
- 6:01colon blow, there you go. It's done. And that happened during
- 6:05the days of weight watchers, when we used to count fiber and people would
- 6:11find the cereal that had the highest fiber possible and they would eat the largest
- 6:17amount that they could hold. And that's when we called it colon blow.
- 6:23Forget and forget, and we're serious forgetting the fact that it was loaded with
- 6:27sugar. So oh, absolutely it sugar. But when we knew someone was
- 6:32about to have a colon blow, we tried to keep our distance. Yeah,
- 6:36exactly. All right, so there you go. I just collected twenty
- 6:40bucks and I have to give you ten of it. Yes you do,
- 6:42Thank you very much. All right, what you going on? Well,
- 6:45first of all, yes, thank you forty eight years forty eight years.
- 6:49And I want to tell you about that day. Go ahead, Uh.
- 6:53We the store was packed with people, every table was full. We were
- 6:57giving out free ice cream, and we lost power all the days to do
- 7:01it all. Just on the April second or the April eleventh, was just
- 7:05that was April. That was April Fool's Day, April first, the opening.
- 7:11So then the next day we had the tornadoes. So the first two
- 7:15days of that week, we're not very exciting. But what are you going
- 7:18to do? But I am. I thank you by the way, you
- 7:21did a public service announcement for us, and we had a wonderful turnout,
- 7:27So you know, things happened. But Shape Shop is alive and well.
- 7:31Our food truck is getting busier and busier. People love what we are producing
- 7:36out on the road. But also when you come into the Shape Shop,
- 7:41you're eating fresh, clean food. And we also have some very unique grab
- 7:45and goes. So if you don't feel like cooking dinner, and a lot
- 7:47of people don't, they can pick up their meal, take it home and
- 7:51it's you know, microwaveable for thirty seconds and just delicious food and it's fresh,
- 7:58it's clean, and of course or sugar is not the friend. And
- 8:03the stuff that we make has no chemicals, nothing is processed. And the
- 8:07world is beginning to pay attention. And you know, I have been around
- 8:13in this wonderful industry for a long time, but I have to throw some
- 8:16caution to the wind because lots and lots of people are taking all of those
- 8:22new diet drugs, but they're not doing the most essential thing, and that
- 8:28is also learning how to eat. There's no such thing as a drug fixing
- 8:35it all, because if you haven't learned what to do, there's going to
- 8:39be some unhappiness down the road. Not that I wish that on anyone.
- 8:43I love everyone to be successful in a healthy body. But how you get
- 8:48to that healthy body has to do with the hand to mouth and what you
- 8:54eat on a regular basis. And I'm going to play Devil's advocate for moment
- 8:58based on an article that I read the other day. I read an article
- 9:01the other day, Millie that was talking about this very same thing. With
- 9:03the popularity of all of these weight loss drugs. Maybe they're intended for other
- 9:07things, but one of the somebody figured out, well, one of the
- 9:09side effings is you lose weight. Right. Someone in an article said,
- 9:13hey, look it's a start, it's a start, and that it's not
- 9:16as bad as everybody's making it out to be. You would say, okay,
- 9:20And my answer to that, I hope whoever authored that statement is one
- 9:26hundred percent correct. But one of the things we cannot deny is you must
- 9:31eat, and you must learn about healthy eating. If whatever happens with that
- 9:37drug is going to have sustainability because the drug itself is not an educational tool,
- 9:46and the educational tool is what we do. I hope who said that
- 9:50has more truth to that statement than not, but there's no I've been around
- 9:56in this industry for a very long time, not just for my personal well
- 10:01well personal weight loss, but also learning and seeing what happens. I took
- 10:09diet pills in my younger life, and I learned nothing until I started eating.
- 10:16When I joined weight Watchers, my life and my world changed. I've
- 10:20seen the horrors of fen fen and reducts and other things that came along.
- 10:26If you haven't changed your mind about your body, you haven't made the essential
- 10:31changes. I mean, all you have to do is google the I mean,
- 10:33just you know, on your spare time, google these drugs and come
- 10:39up with, you know, over the years, the one that was going
- 10:43to be the miracle drug, and many of them are not on the shelves
- 10:46anymore. The majority of them are because there was no miracle for her reason
- 10:50for a reason, and I have a feeling that when you look at what's
- 10:52out there now with a lot of these, you're going to be talking about
- 10:54those and the same I'm not saying that they're going to necessarily be legal,
- 10:56but you are going to be talking about those in the same light in five
- 11:00to ten years. And again I'm I could stand to do a whole lot
- 11:03better eating, just like a lot of people could. But I will say
- 11:05this that in the end, no matter what drugs come out, no matter
- 11:11what kind of surgery, there is no matter what you know, any of
- 11:13these medical procedures, nothing beats died an exercise. It's been that way since
- 11:18the beginning of time, and it's going to continue to be that way.
- 11:22That's zild the number one thing. But people are looking for overnight, quick
- 11:26miracles, and I must you know. Yesterday I had a really nice experience.
- 11:31I was at Kroger's shopping and this woman asked me a question where something
- 11:35was I answered, and then she looked at me. She said, why
- 11:37is your voice familiar? I said, I don't know. Well, anyway,
- 11:43one word led to another, and of course she once upon a time
- 11:46attended weight Watchers. What she didn't know was that weight Watchers has changed their
- 11:52whole format, their whole presentation, because they are about the diet drugs also.
- 11:56But what I that's got to be disappointing to you. It's actually there's
- 12:01a bigger word than disappointing. It's a heartbreak. And I can say that
- 12:07honestly because I joined Weight Watchers in Baltimore when the whole organization was three years
- 12:13old. To say that I grew up with it is not even an understatement.
- 12:18It's major. It helped me become the person that I dreamed about becoming
- 12:24in terms of health and awareness to share with others. Anyway, what this
- 12:30lady didn't know was there are classes to attend, and they're the ones that
- 12:33I created using the Mediterranean lifestyle. And we have a Thursday morning and we
- 12:39have a Saturday morning. Although this week we're not doing it tomorrow. We're
- 12:43doing it today when I leave here. But that's just this week as an
- 12:48exception. But the important thing is that people need each other. We need
- 12:54to be able to share ideas and leave with quality information. And Mediterranean living
- 13:00has taught me more than all the years that I was part of. I
- 13:05was the life of weight Watchers because the information is about how to take care
- 13:13of your health, and when you take care of your health, you're also
- 13:16taking care of your psychological well being because the changes that you make are working
- 13:22in your whole entire life. It's not just then, it's about how am
- 13:28I getting there and what am I doing to really and truly be able to
- 13:33make a difference in my life. And that's where I think Mediterranean is way
- 13:39years ahead of anything else. And you know, the group that brought it
- 13:43to this country is called Old Ways, and what they brought to this country
- 13:48was the old way of eating. And you know, I very jokingly say,
- 13:54although it's not intended to be a joke, I believe that this is
- 13:58the way Jesus say it. Because what super market did he go to?
- 14:01He ate fresh, clean food, nothing processed, no chemicals, as well
- 14:07as all the people in his time of life. See, And what I
- 14:11thought you were going to say is when you were talking about being at Kroger,
- 14:13I thought you were going to say that. A woman said your voice
- 14:16sounds familiar, that she listened to you on the radio. That's what I
- 14:18thought you that's really thought where I thought you were going with that. Well,
- 14:20I told her I was going to be on radio tomorrow, which is
- 14:24today, so I hope she's listening. But Dave Allen showing five eighty lives

- 14:39to take our food truck to TC Energy and Kanas City. And we were
- 14:43there last week in that deluge of water that came out of the sky.
- 14:48But tomorrow it looks like nice weather. And we have a lot of things
- 14:52that are planned for the food truck and we're excited about that. But if
- 14:56you don't come to the food truck, come to the show up seven six

- 19:11Charleston and they asked for time to talk about it. Of course, you
- 19:14know me, mister open door eye, oblige. Sarah Gottlieb Robert asvak just
- 19:19like it looks, read it, just like it looks Dave Robert absecond.
- 19:22Sarah Gottlieber here with the group Guns to Gardens and they joined me this morning
- 19:27in the par Marstors studio. Sarah Robert, Welcome, to the show.
- 19:30Good morning to both of you. Good morning, Good morning to you.
- 19:33I might probably have to have you come a little closer to that microphone for
- 19:34you there, sir. Okay, all right, So you have an event
- 19:37coming up May fourth here in Charleston, Saint Mark's Church, nine hundred Washington
- 19:41Street East, from one to three. When people first hear of an event
- 19:45like this, they think, you know, because when I got your email
- 19:51and I saw the subject line, I thought, oh boy, they think
- 19:52they're coming to get my guns. It is nothing like that at all.
- 19:56I've done some reading on the organization. It's really not about that at All's
- 20:00here correct, It's a voluntary surrender of an unwanted gun while they watch,
- 20:06their gun is dismantled with a chop saw, and then blacksmiths take the gun
- 20:11pieces and reform them into garden tools or art or jewelry. So it's voluntary.
- 20:18Robert can speak to who might want to surrender a gun? All right,
- 20:21Robert, go ahead. Well, you know a lot of times people
- 20:23come into possession of firearms and that was never really their intent. Perhaps the
- 20:29firearm owner has passed away, their lifestyle has changed, now they have children
- 20:34in the home or their grandparents that are taking care of children on a regular
- 20:41basis. And we all know how inquisitive children can be. And unfortunately,
- 20:47unintentional shootings involving even two three four year olds are unfortunately not uncommon in our
- 20:53country. Also, you know, folks who develop mental health issues, their
- 21:00family may want to keep firearms from from falling into their hands. And a
- 21:06firearm that was used in a suicide, So a lot of reasons why.
- 21:11People just they're looking for a way to get rid of the gun and know
- 21:17that it's not going to fall into the wrong hands, which you know,
- 21:21which happens. I mean, I mean, it can be stolen, it
- 21:23could be you know. So this is this is these events. This one's
- 21:29happened to Charleston, and again I'll give you the details on that again come
- 21:32up a little bit later on. But this is a nationwide effort, is
- 21:33that right? It is? It started in Colorado about three years ago after
- 21:37a mass shooting at a King super in Boulder, but the concept grew.
- 21:42Oh I'd like to say the concept was the is the idea of a Mennonite
- 21:48pastor named Mike Martin, and he based it on the scripture from Isaiah chapter
- 21:53two, verse four, they shall beat their swords into plowshares, So that
- 21:57that's where he got the idea for this. And then the first guns to
- 22:02Gardens event was held three years ago, like I said, and since then
- 22:06they have been held nationwide and closer to us, there's been a guns to
- 22:11Gardens events in Shepherdstown, Columbus, Cleveland, and Louisville. So how exactly
- 22:18does it work. The day of the event, I mean, how exactly
- 22:21does it work? People will well, obviously come to the location Saint Mark's
- 22:26Church. They'll be They'll be met by greeters who will explain to them what
- 22:33needs to happen from that point. The greeter will then direct them to the
- 22:41gun safety station, say where their gun would be. The guns guns need
- 22:45to be unloaded and in the trunk of their car and so they'refrom. So
- 22:52you don't want people just walking in right right, and from the from the
- 22:56point where the greeter picks them up, they'll be taken to the far arm
- 23:00safety station, where one of our firearm experts will ensure that the gun is
- 23:04in fact unloaded. We will record the serial number for the gun. Okay,
- 23:11and that's it. No other identifying, and what we want to do
- 23:15is after the event, we want to provide that list of serial numbers to
- 23:21the Charleston Police Department. They can run it against perhaps any guns that have
- 23:25been used in a crime or have been reported stolen or whatever, and know
- 23:30that that firearm is no longer even in the picture. What kind of buy
- 23:36in has there been from the police agencies around the country. I mean,
- 23:40do they generally speak and go along with us? I would imagine they would,
- 23:44Well, the thing is and as is the case here in Charleston,
- 23:48they they really don't have any mechanism for someone who wanted to surrender a gun.
- 23:52They don't have any process, they don't have storage capacity, and and
- 23:59really what would they do with it after it came into their possession. So,
- 24:03uh, the program has had the support of local law enforcement for those
- 24:11reasons. You know that it gets firearms that nobody is really interested in having
- 24:18out of circulation off the street so that they can't fall into the wrong hands.
- 24:23So what's the process like that they because the guns actually become garden is
- 24:30in fact, in fact, Sarah has a very nice necklace, which obviously
- 24:33the radio listeners can't see that they come back in six months. We'll have
- 24:37television. But I have a necklace that's in the shape of a heart.
- 24:41But that was a gun piece. Okay, So okay, I'm gonna play.
- 24:45I'm gonna be totally ignorant here because I'm the least crafty person on the
- 24:48face of the earth. Exactly what is the process like to make that?
- 24:51What does it take to turn anything into a necklace? Like? That's a
- 24:53great question, but that's a definitely a blacksmith's skill. And so we will
- 24:57have blacksmiths there who will take the gun parts to their forge. Our blacksmith
- 25:03will be out of Asheville, North Carolina. They're with a nonprofit group called
- 25:07Raw Tools. But we are hoping to have local blacksmiths interested and possibly in
- 25:14future events, keep our gun metal local and have it reformed here. Is
- 25:18this the first time you've had an event like this in Charleston? Yes,
- 25:21okay, yes, have event. Where did you get the I mean,
- 25:23I know it's gone on nationwide, guys, but where did you get the
- 25:26idea that we're going to have this in Charleston. I heard about this program
- 25:32through my church. My church is Presbyterian Church, USA. I belong to
- 25:34Village Chapel Presbyterian and they are a supporter of this effort, and so I
- 25:41heard about it through there and it just kind of clicked with me that the
- 25:45voluntary nature of it, and also then there were needs to surrender a gun
- 25:48that I was unaware of. And they also put on a five week program
- 25:55last summer with Sarah and I and our partners training Dina Mohler participated in and
- 26:03basically it was a five week once a week, one hour over zoom people
- 26:08from all over the country learning about guns, to garden, how to what
- 26:14the program was, how to conduct an event in your community. Gave us
- 26:19the resources for people like raw Tools South to help with that, and so
- 26:29you know, all we me and Dina we did ours during the daytime.
- 26:33Sarah was at nighttime and she had even people from Hawaii, right, Yes,
- 26:37we're in Cohort, Yeah, Nashville, Minnesota, Akron, all over
- 26:41Okay. But Dave Allen showing five a light brown to your apartment by husband's
- 26:45pizza, Get a large at ninch Pepperoni pizza and a large toss saddled only
- 26:48twenty ninety nine at your favorite husband's location to have a couple of texts here
- 26:52for you that people text in, and you're always talk to you guys about
- 26:56answering questions. Someone to ask where do you get your funding for the organization.
- 27:00We have been fund raising since December and so we have gotten funding from
- 27:03four different churches in the Jewish temple in town as well as a grant and
- 27:11a lot of private donations. So we've ended up with about nine thousand dollars,
- 27:17which is what we needed. And that money is used principally to buy
- 27:22the grocery gift cards. That's part of that. I don't know you even
- 27:25know if we've even mentioned that yet. Yeople, when people bring these items
- 27:29out, they're not going to walk away with nothing. That's correct. Once
- 27:33they see that their firearm has been dismantled by the chopsaw operator, then they
- 27:40will receive grocery cards grocery gift cards in an amount that varies depending on the
- 27:47type of firearm that that was surrendered. So, for instance, a handgun,
- 27:52a normal handgun would get one hundred and fifty dollars in gift cards.
- 27:59An assault kind of AR fifteen rifle would be two hundred dollars. Why the
- 28:06difference in the price just the difference in how much work has to go with
- 28:11okay, and then think about that into a lot more moving parts, I
- 28:15guess, also moving parts. And also the fact that you know, obviously
- 28:18if we can, if we could get some of those AR fifteen's off the
- 28:23street, perhaps we wouldn't see them in the news so often, because I
- 28:27mean, you know, I'm not anti gun by any stretch of the imagination,
- 28:30and I don't think that a lot of people with your organization. I
- 28:33grew up in a family of hunters, and you know, with guns in
- 28:37my household, and I understand that a lot of people use guns for sport
- 28:41and gun collecting and value that too. And this is just this is an
- 28:48event for people who again own a gun that they just it's bringing them worry,
- 28:52it's associated with grief, and they just are uncomfortable with it in their
- 28:56home. To tell them the story about the lady that just found a gun
- 29:00in her home. Just this week, I was presenting this program to a
- 29:03group and a woman came up to me afterwards said that her husband had died
- 29:07seventeen years ago. He was a gun owner, and she had dispersed his
- 29:12guns to her sons, but just last week or about two weeks ago,
- 29:18her son found two more guns in her house that all this time she didn't
- 29:22know they were there. And so anyway, she was talking about coming to
- 29:26the event. Okay, so now when you you people surrender the guns and
- 29:32again it's all voluntary, but you don't take me AMMO. Well now why
- 29:34is that? Well, because number one, you can't cut up AMMO.
- 29:38Okay, logistics, day, yeah, logistics you can't. Obviously you can't
- 29:44cut up AMMO. And there really is no way for us to disperse of
- 29:49it. Okay, it would be a good thing to work with city police
- 29:52on that. Would they take them? Would they accept the AMMO and see
- 29:56the thing? The other thing to keep in mind is this is a surrender,
- 30:00a safe surrender event. Okay, we never take ownership of the gun,
- 30:07which is why this process takes them from We greet them when they arrive
- 30:14on the property, We escort them through the process, they see their firearm
- 30:18being destroyed, and then they get their gift cards and then they can leave
- 30:23or will have pastoral care available. You know, perhaps somebody did surrender a
- 30:29firearm because it was used in a suicide, and obviously that would have deep
- 30:34meaning to that person, and they may need somebody to talk to at the
- 30:38moment. But the key point is we never take possession of the gun.
- 30:42Okay, last text here before we let you go. Then we'll give the
- 30:45information about the event. Again, it says Rakes hosmatics. Wouldn't it make
- 30:48more sense to sell the gun to a gun shop or give it to a
- 30:52family member? Guns to gardens seems like a way to guilt people into giving
- 30:56up their guns and possibly wrap them out to Charleston cops. First of all,
- 31:00we are not going to rat anybody out. As I mentioned. The
- 31:03only thing that we are going to collect about the firearm, because that is
- 31:08how the program is set up nationwide, is serial numbers, and it's you
- 31:15know, yes, people can can distribute firearms however they choose. As Sarah
- 31:21just mentioned that lady you know, dispersed her husband's firearms to to their sons.
- 31:29Other people may not have that mechanism, you know. They they suddenly
- 31:33a spouse passes away and suddenly they realize, Hey, I'm now the owner
- 31:37of two hand guns and a shotgun and I don't want them in my house
- 31:44and to sell them can leave you unsure about where where they end up eventually.
- 31:48This is this is an assurance that people as well people people you know
- 31:56people typically sometimes will soon of five things too, you know, like if
- 32:00you said it was used in a suicide or maybe a murder or something like
- 32:05that. And you know, I don't I can't sleep at night knowing that
- 32:07that is out there. I know that may seem silly to some people,
- 32:10but until you've gone through it, you may not realize that that. I
- 32:14want to know that that is gone. So final textas what a great idea.
- 32:20Thanks so much for the guns to guardens people. Suicides by guns among
- 32:22young adults is on the increase. We'll leave it there. Give us the
- 32:25information where the event is and where people can learn more. Guns to Gardens

- 36:15April second, widespread flash flooding that took place last Thursday. People are still
- 36:19cleaning up. Tonight, at seven, there's going to be an event held
- 36:22at the Washington District Community Center. That's the thirteen thirteen Sandplant Road in South
- 36:25Charleston. It's designed to get information out to the people, to make official
- 36:30storm damage reports and to collect other vital information about relief and recovery. Delicate
- 36:35jb Acres is here this morning to bring attention to this evening's event. Delegate,
- 36:37Good morning, Welcome to the show. Hey Dave's good to see again.
- 36:40What a month, or better yet, what a couple of days of
- 36:44weather April second, April eleventh, here man. Yeah, it was essentially
- 36:46just kind of two weeks in a row. We got to hit twice and
- 36:50two you know. I mean, I think some people got damage winded in
- 36:52water probably both times, but a lot of folks. It was two different
- 36:57types of damage and it's going to be two different scenarios in terms of what
- 37:00kind of relief you can get and what kind of claims you can make and
- 37:02what help us out there. So so, first of all, thank you
- 37:07so much for your time. I know how busy you all are, especially
- 37:08during political season a little bit. Yeah, so this is this is not
- 37:13a political appearance by me. I am in the legislature, but this is
- 37:15part of my job. You know, as a legislator, you're supposed to
- 37:19do these things. This is part of my work. So today's just to
- 37:21talk about this event. You gave the time and place. We'll say it
- 37:24again here in a little bit. This is going to be down in the
- 37:27southern part of the county, which you did at that way on purpose.
- 37:30That is in my district, but that part of the county sections of a
- 37:32guy hit you know, pretty hard. I think the folks down the southern
- 37:37part of the county sometimes think they maybe are forgotten a little bit, so
- 37:39or trying and draw some attention to them. But also this is a fairly
- 37:43new community center that the City of South Charleston actually built. It's a really
- 37:46nice facility. Trying to highlight it as well. This South Charlestan If you
- 37:52look at the map of sous Tralston, it is kind of crazy lot of
- 37:54that it runs. Part of it runs a straight down quarter g almost to
- 38:00Lincoln County. This community centers in the southern part of South Charleston, and
- 38:05Mayor Frank Mullins right away immediately said, hey, we're going to let you
- 38:07guys use this special things to him. Laura Marker is the city council person
- 38:12for Ward four, which covers that area. She's been super helpful and she
- 38:15is very involved in that community. So the City of South Charleson deserves credit
- 38:20for lenn Us be there. And this started last week. I know you
- 38:23have limited time, so I'm trying to come right to it. This started
- 38:27last week. I've been involved in some disaster recovery efforts before, and one
- 38:30of the things that I've seen in the past is when this happens. A
- 38:34lot of folks don't know where to even start. They don't know who to
- 38:37call, they don't know what resources are available with any they don't even know
- 38:39who to contact. And they really just a lot of folks just go online
- 38:43and they'll google you know, what do I do? You know? So,
- 38:45which is not what you want to do. It's like going to web
- 38:47md if you haven't met medical issue. So the thought I had was having
- 38:52seen this in person before, folks not knowing what information there is or who
- 38:55to even talk to. I thought, let's try to bring as many people
- 39:00with knowledge into the room as possible and make it I've been calling this a
- 39:04one stop shop. So and again, all these folks deserve credit. I
- 39:07talked to Brian Abraham at the Governor's office immediately right away. Brian said,
- 39:10we'll have somebody there, maybe even him. I'm not sure who can show
- 39:13up. They're all busy folks. Maybe somebody from the Emergency Management Division,
- 39:17from the state, county folks. CW. Sigmund from the County Emergency Management
- 39:22Services, He'll be there. The county commission fully on board with this Commissioner
- 39:25of Silango, Carper and Wheeler all supportive. We're going to have I think
- 39:30I think Joey Crawford, the chief deputy from the Sheriff's department, is going
- 39:34to be there. We're going to have some disaster relief organizations there, American
- 39:37Red Cross, Erica Manny, super helpful. Margaret O'Neil from United Way here
- 39:43in central West Virginia. She's on board and I think she may be there
- 39:45on behalf of a couple organizations like West Virginia two one one also. So
- 39:50we're going to introduce all those folks. I call all of them and started
- 39:53emailing them last week. I mean, I will take credit for the idea.
- 39:57I'll do that as a politician, but the hard work is being done
- 40:00by them. Okay, that's the heavy lifting. And all of them immediately
- 40:04said yes, So thank you to them. So they're going to be there.
- 40:07I will introduce all of them, is the plan, and then they're
- 40:09going to tell folks just quickly what their role is, what people can do,
- 40:15Like mister Sigmund will explain that the county has these surveys they're called one,
- 40:17two, three surveys, and if you suffered storm damage, step one
- 40:22is to fill out those storm damage surveys, and we'll explain that process tonight.
- 40:27If you're a listener and you can't be there, it's a one two
- 40:29three survey, it's online. The reason why that's so important is number one,
- 40:32if you qualify for assistance, that might be a step towards getting it
- 40:36for you, but it also gives us a cumulative picture of how much damage
- 40:40was done to our area. And it's a double edgedword. We don't want
- 40:44there to be a huge amount of damage, but once you do cross the
- 40:47threshold, that qualifies you for more assistance, for example from FEMA. And
- 40:52we'll have people there tonight to talk about whether FEMA is going to get involved
- 40:54in this. And I know the state is working extremely hard to get them
- 40:59involved, but you have to have a certain amount of damage before you meet
- 41:01their criteria. So in order to meet their criteria, we need everyone to
- 41:06report. And I want to stress as well, even though this is going
- 41:07to be and this would be a drive for some people, I mean,
- 41:10wherever you have in the county is going to be you know, someone in
- 41:13convenient for somebody county it is right. So if you live up north of
- 41:15Clay County line, you know north of Elkview. This will be a drive
- 41:20where you understand, but we also know there were folks like out in Tornado
- 41:23appropriately enough, who suffered a lot of damage at Spith Creek area. We
- 41:28know there were people out Winifred that you know, that area, the eastern
- 41:30part of the county who suffered damage, especially from the wind. So we
- 41:35tried to make it somewhat centralized at least for that subec could as best we
- 41:38could. Anyone is invited. Yeah, I wind of stress. I almost
- 41:43going to say that because it is going to be held out of the facility
- 41:45out at sand Plant. Yes, but if you're on the on the complete
- 41:47other end on the Putnam County line and you suffer damage, as long as
- 41:51you're you know, this is open to anybody, not just people in that
- 41:53area. Well it's you know, if you live across the line in Lincoln
- 41:55County, you can come to this. Anybody is welcome. Now we will
- 42:00have on the county level, there will only be kanall county representatives, but
- 42:02I'm sure they can answer questions for anybody that's help. And we'll have people
- 42:06again from the state there and the disaster relief organizations. They can answer anyone's
- 42:09questions. We're going to help anybody who needs it. So again it'll be
- 42:13Cannall County centric. Anybody's welcome. If you live anywhere in Connall County,
- 42:17you know, and this is a thing. If this one is successful and
- 42:21Dave, I have no idea, there could be ten people there night,
- 42:22there could be one hundred. I don't know what's going to happen. I
- 42:25hope there's more people that are help than there are people from the state and
- 42:30county and legislature there. But if this is successful, I think, or
- 42:35part of what I hope happens is it will spur this to be something we
- 42:37can do in other places as well. Because what we want to do is
- 42:40or my goal here is to bring the resources to you, not make you
- 42:45have to hunt for what you need to get help, especially at a time
- 42:49like this and floods. I'm sure you've seen this. A flood can be
- 42:52worse than a fire. I mean, if your home has been flooded,
- 42:54that can be the worst type of recovery. There are people out there probably
- 42:58today who are still taking off or time away from family to try to patch
- 43:01up their home just to live in it. So we want to bring the
- 43:05help to you make it as convenient as possible in what we know is an
- 43:07inconvenience situation, but just bring it to you and make this process as easy
- 43:14as possible. We know is a tough situation, but avilance showing five ety
- 43:16line brought to you apart by General Hardware of Windfield and Milton, a general
- 43:20number of Winfield. If you're planning a project this spring, please shop locally,
- 43:23stop by any of their locations. Visit General Hardware WV dot com before
- 43:28we let you go, and we'll hit the time and place and everything again
- 43:30for this event tonight, JB. I got to quickly ask you me about
- 43:32a minute or so, how are things in legislature go on? I know
- 43:37we just had some committee meetings for the last couple of days. Governor is
- 43:39going to reconvene next month. Your thoughts, anything that you'd like to see
- 43:44on the call for next month. I'll leave the time up to you.
- 43:46Well, next month will be a big meeting. That's where we're going to
- 43:49address budget issues obviously, so a lot will be in the agenda. There
- 43:52a lot that's publicized. Some of that's going to revolve around, for example,
- 43:57the waiver program for folks who have disabilities, and that that's going to
- 44:00be a big discussion needs to be addressed over here and competing thoughts on that,
- 44:04so that's a big deal. There's childcare issues I think in this state
- 44:07we need to address. That's a property for me personally and I think a
- 44:10lot of other legislators. The interims we had this week were really just more
- 44:14informational, but really really good. Tay. I would encourage members of the
- 44:16public to check out our interim schedule and come to some of those meetings.
- 44:21We have people talking about things like I went to a flood committee meeting for
- 44:23example. I'm not on that committee, but I went to one. Super
- 44:25informative for anybody. So that's what this week was. Next week will be
- 44:30the one that gets a lot more Next month will be the one that gets
- 44:31a lot more attention. So quickly I tell you the address again. Could
- 44:35you're short on time tonight? Anyone and everyone is welcome. If you didn't
- 44:39suffer damage, but know someone who did and you can help them, please
- 44:42be there. This will be at the Washington District Community Center, thirteen thirteen
- 44:47Sandplant Road, South Charleston, two five three O nine is the zip it's
- 44:52at set starts at seven pm. I would encourage everybody to be there.
- 44:57You'll get information on what helps available, what we can do for you,
- 45:00who to turn to again. It is a one stop shop. We're trying
- 45:04to make this as easy as possible one folks, and we need you to
- 45:07show up because I think we can probably do this again later if we have

- 49:35that the West Virginia law banning's transgender athletes for participating in girls athletics events violated
- 49:40the rights of a student athlete. This is the case out of Harrison County.
- 49:44Big News on that yesterday. The story is making the news nationally and
- 49:47it does have national repercussions now. When the law was passed, most legal
- 49:52experts said that it wouldn't stand, and it didn't. But it's not over
- 49:59yet. And if you heard Brad's take on this, which I thought was
- 50:02really really good, he said, well, you know, they're not throwing
- 50:06this out. They're basically saying, we just don't have enough at this point,
- 50:08and that's why it was overturned. Attorney General Republican candidate for governor Patrick
- 50:13Morrissey is set to join Hoppy at the top of the show to discuss that.

- 50:53show tomorrow two sports related items. One has to do with pickleball, the
- 50:58other with the all high school sports here in the valley. There are some
- 51:01folks that aren't too happy with some of the reclassifications of some sports teams by
- 51:06the West Virginia s s a C. One of those is from Nitral High
- 51:08His name is Garret Burdette. He's going to join us on the show tomorrow.
- 51:12Plus, we have someone from the group's Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse on the
- 51:16show tomorrow with one of the coolest names ever, pepper Penia. Pepper Pania
- 51:21from Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse will be on the show tomorrow. In the interest
- 51:27of time, I didn't get a lot of time yesterday to spend on this
- 51:31and that is the investigation that is now officially wrapped up into the situation involving
- 51:38former Charleston Police Chief Ty Hunt for a legied sexual misconduct. One of the
- 51:44ladies making the accusation, spoke about it and voice her displeasure with her words
- 51:47quite frankly some of the and some of the words of city council folks too,
- 51:55the lack of transparency or simply informing the public as to exactly what the
- 52:02punishment was for former police Chief ty Kunt. Now we do know that he
- 52:09was demoted a couple of ranks and was suspended for an indefinite amount of time.
- 52:15Councilwoman Shannon Snodgrass, who's been on this show numerous times, always welcome
- 52:17to come back anytime, as well as former Mayor Danny Jones, were on
- 52:22with Hoppy yesterday. Separately, they were on the show yesterday. I urge
- 52:25you, if you haven't heard it, to go back and listen to that
- 52:27show. And also, by the way, may want to check out Hoppy's
- 52:30commentary that's available on the website and on our social media platforms as well.
- 52:35Both Councilwoman Snodgrass and former Mayor Jones were on with Hoppy talking about it yesterday,
- 52:39the Mayor's office and the city of course, saying that it's pretty much
- 52:45a personnel matter, but many people are asking for a little bit more information
- 52:51to come out about it, and some of those are on counsel and some
- 52:53of those are in immediate some of those are in public. Again'll be discussed
- 52:58this morning. More on on Hoppy coming up at ten o'clock or just that
- 53:02actually be throughout the show. And I would say this a court of a
- 53:07short short of a court order. I think I think we've got what we're
- 53:12gonna get out of the investigation to ty hunt. That is my opinion this
- 53:16morning. Texas has never thought I'd hear so many snowflakes crying about people choosing
- 53:21to part with their guns. Not just kidding, anti choice, people cry
- 53:23out anything that goes against their views. That'll be the final text of the
- 53:28day. Hopy Kirch will come it up at ten oh six we'll talk line.
- 53:30My producer was Ryan Nicholson. Thank you so much. Talking a little
- 53:32sports tomorrow on the show. Just just a tad bit plus pepper Pana from
- 53:37the Citizens against Lawsuit Abuse on the show coming up tomorrow. I will see
- 53:40you then, have you some great Wednesday till tomorrow, Have fun and love
