Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: hottest influencer and pop culture news twice a week. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Amy Torber and coming up on today's show, Tammy Hembrough
- 0:13Speaker 1: sensationally unmasks a TikTok troll, Ella McGrath hits back at
- 0:17Speaker 1: a follower for calling her unrelatable, Taylor Swift is engaged
- 0:21Speaker 1: and our Friday debrief. But first, this news snuck in
- 0:25Speaker 1: just in time, hence the Tammy double up. So Tammy
- 0:27Speaker 1: Hembrough has finally addressed her romance with AFL star Bailey
- 0:31Speaker 1: Smith Calling him a sweetie.
- 0:33Speaker 2: So she made the confession to a Herald Sun journalist
- 0:36Speaker 2: while appearing at a fashion event in Melbourne on Wednesday night.
- 0:39Speaker 2: So when asked what she was doing in Melbourne, she replied,
- 0:42Speaker 2: I'm here for a few things, a little work, a
- 0:44Speaker 2: little play and a bit of both. So Melbourne is,
- 0:47Speaker 2: of course, where Bailey Smith lives and also, awkwardly, her ex-husband,
- 0:51Speaker 2: Matt Sikowsky.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm guessing this is why she's been giving quotes of
- 0:54Speaker 1: the Herald Sun, just so Matt can see it.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Well, she's really just gifted him another opportunity to call
- 0:58Speaker 2: the pap so they can take photos of him reading
- 1:00Speaker 2: the newspaper at a cafe again.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Perfect.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Now, when asked about Bailey Smith, Tammy said, I'm not
- 1:06Speaker 1: going to say anything about Bailey except he's a sweetie,
- 1:09Speaker 1: he's a good guy. She then said she wouldn't comment
- 1:12Speaker 1: further when asked if she would be attending the Brownlow
- 1:14Speaker 1: Medal next month. I take that as a yes.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Or that Bailey hasn't asked her yet and she's waiting
- 1:19Speaker 2: to be invited.
- 1:20Speaker 1: It is going to be such a huge social media
- 1:22Speaker 1: moment if Tammy does rock up on the red carpet.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just another part of the plot really, isn't it?
- 1:26Speaker 2: This is sort of what I've been writing songs about
- 1:30Speaker 2: wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:35Speaker 2: On Wednesday, everyone's parasocial bestie got engaged. Taylor Swift and
- 1:40Speaker 2: Travis Kelsey broke the internet for the second time in
- 1:43Speaker 2: two weeks by sharing the news to Instagram alongside an
- 1:46Speaker 2: engagement photo shoot. Amy, I feel like it's one of
- 1:48Speaker 2: those pop culture moments where you remember where you were
- 1:51Speaker 2: when you heard the news. Where were you?
- 1:53Speaker 1: Well, I was in bed like most people. And for
- 1:56Speaker 1: some reason, I woke up right on 3am. It was
- 1:59Speaker 1: probably something to do with the fact I had a
- 2:01Speaker 1: big cup of tea before I went to bed. So
- 2:02Speaker 1: I need to go to the toilet.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I think it's our newborn.
- 2:05Speaker 1: No, no, Harry was, he was fast asleep. But I
- 2:07Speaker 1: looked at my phone to see what the time was.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And I had all these text messages from Sophie being like,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I don't know if you're awake, but like Taylor Swift
- 2:15Speaker 1: is engaged. I was like, what the fuck? So I
- 2:17Speaker 1: quickly clicked on Instagram. And it was one of those
- 2:20Speaker 1: moments where I genuinely felt so happy for Taylor Swift.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Well, I found out the news a couple of hours later. Fortunately,
- 2:28Speaker 2: my phone was on Do Not Disturb. Sophie was awake
- 2:31Speaker 2: and found out in real time because she was awake
- 2:33Speaker 2: feeding her son, Luca.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Sophie saw the news so early that there wasn't even
- 2:38Speaker 1: any news articles out. There was nothing on X. She
- 2:41Speaker 1: was like, oh my God, is this real? It reminded
- 2:43Speaker 1: me of when I first saw the Meghan Markle baby
- 2:45Speaker 1: mama dance video. I saw that during a late night
- 2:48Speaker 1: feed and thought, fuck, this can't actually be serious.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, well, when I looked at my phone, I'm like,
- 2:53Speaker 2: what's going on? Because, you know, when you swipe up
- 2:54Speaker 2: the notifications and there's so many and I could just
- 2:57Speaker 2: see a picture of And as soon as I saw it,
- 2:59Speaker 2: I was like, and I saw the name Taylor Swift,
- 3:01Speaker 2: I was like, she's engaged. The post really surprised me.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I didn't think we would be blessed with such an
- 3:06Speaker 2: insight into the proposal.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Well, I was shocked as well that we got a
- 3:09Speaker 1: close-up of the ring.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought they would keep that one under wraps. Firstly,
- 3:13Speaker 2: for security reasons. And secondly, to avoid all of that
- 3:15Speaker 2: media scrutiny of them obsessing how much it costs. But
- 3:19Speaker 2: I suppose it was only going to be a matter
- 3:20Speaker 2: of time before someone got a sneaky shot of the
- 3:23Speaker 2: ring of paparazzi. So they might as well share it
- 3:25Speaker 2: with everyone.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Hey, long time listener, Rodney, he said he thought you
- 3:28Speaker 1: would describe it as a big fuck off ring.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Well, that's exactly what it is. It is a big
- 3:32Speaker 2: fuck off ring. It has been estimated to be worth
- 3:34Speaker 2: a million dollars. It literally just looks perfect for Taylor Swift.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Like if I had to pick out an engagement ring
- 3:40Speaker 2: for her, that is what I would have picked. And
- 3:42Speaker 2: Travis has done an amazing job because Apparently he actually
- 3:45Speaker 2: designed the ring himself.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I keep hearing everyone say, wow, that's better than paper rings.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Yeah, well, she did say she likes sparkly things.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It's a very sparkly thing. I think I would actually
- 3:55Speaker 1: be concerned walking out of the house with that size
- 3:58Speaker 1: rock on my finger.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Oh, it's a massive rock, but it's not garish like
- 4:01Speaker 2: that ring that Ronaldo recently proposed with. That was ridiculous.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Well, it's not as if Travis could have given her
- 4:07Speaker 1: just some, I mean, even a two carat diamond. It
- 4:10Speaker 1: might look a bit stingy with their pay packets.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I think it's important to point out that
- 4:14Speaker 2: this is a very special diamond. So it's an old
- 4:16Speaker 2: mine cut diamond, which is basically an antique hand cut diamond.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And Amy, you mentioned how sparkly it is. Apparently, it's
- 4:24Speaker 2: meant to sparkle with a soft romantic glow and fire.
- 4:27Speaker 2: So it's just a really fancy sparkle.
- 4:28Speaker 1: What do you mean it's meant to sparkle with a
- 4:30Speaker 1: soft romantic glow?
- 4:32Speaker 2: That's apparently what the mine-cut diamonds do.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Wow, okay.
- 4:35Speaker 2: That's why they cost a million dollars.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Well, the question would have been if this was an
- 4:37Speaker 1: influencer ring, was it a lab diamond? Clearly, this is
- 4:41Speaker 1: not one.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Please don't insult everyone involved in this story by even
- 4:43Speaker 2: suggesting that this diamond was a lab diamond. Is it mozzanite?
- 4:48Speaker 1: I wonder if a lot of people will be trying
- 4:50Speaker 1: to get the Taylor Swift ring in Mozernite.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Do you remember when Kim Kardashian got engaged to Chris
- 4:54Speaker 2: Humphries and Diva? Remember that jewelry shop bought out the
- 4:57Speaker 2: fake Kim Kardashian rings? I got one.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, there was either the Kim K ring you could
- 5:01Speaker 1: pick from or Princess Diana's.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Well, that's not Kate Middleton's engagement ring. So yeah, two
- 5:06Speaker 2: for one, really. What did you think about the setup
- 5:08Speaker 2: that Travis put together?
- 5:09Speaker 1: Well, it looked like something out of The Bachelor finale.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yeah. And I showed the photo to Rhys and that's
- 5:14Speaker 2: exactly what he said.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And- Also, I read that it was actually in Travis
- 5:19Speaker 1: Kelsey's backyard. So his dad was just dishing all the
- 5:23Speaker 1: details on television.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the most bizarre thing to come from
- 5:27Speaker 2: this story because Taylor is famous for having this PR
- 5:30Speaker 2: manager called Tree Payne, who is literally just the mastermind
- 5:34Speaker 2: of public relations. And all the PR around Taylor Swift
- 5:37Speaker 2: is very calculated. So when Travis Kelsey's dad, Ed Kelsey,
- 5:40Speaker 2: was just coming out and giving out interviews to everyone,
- 5:43Speaker 2: and I mean everyone, he was on all of these
- 5:45Speaker 2: radio shows in Australia and He was on morning shows here.
- 5:48Speaker 2: It was absolutely ridiculous. And he came out and dropped
- 5:50Speaker 2: all of these juicy details. So he said that he's
- 5:53Speaker 2: known about this for a long time. And he and
- 5:56Speaker 2: Taylor's dad, Scott, have been saying, just get on with it.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Just do it.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But is this part of Tree Payne's mastermind, getting the
- 6:03Speaker 1: dad out? It doesn't look like it's been rehearsed, but
- 6:06Speaker 1: he's able to drop all of these really cute details
- 6:09Speaker 1: about the engagement. He's making Taylor look like one of us.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Look, it's very endearing, but I think he needed to
- 6:14Speaker 2: rein it in a little bit because he said that
- 6:16Speaker 2: Travis was getting a bit antsy and he was trying
- 6:18Speaker 2: to find the perfect time, like the perfect date to
- 6:21Speaker 2: do it because obviously Taylor is all into numerology and
- 6:24Speaker 2: loves dates. And it got to the point apparently where
- 6:27Speaker 2: Scott Swift said, oh, come on, when are you going
- 6:29Speaker 2: to get this done? Just get it done. Don't worry
- 6:31Speaker 2: about any special date. You're ready now. you've got the ring,
- 6:33Speaker 2: go do it. So as you mentioned, Travis proposed in
- 6:36Speaker 2: his backyard in Missouri and Ed Kelsey explained that Travis
- 6:40Speaker 2: and Taylor were about to go to dinner and Travis said, oh,
- 6:43Speaker 2: let's go have a glass of wine in the backyard.
- 6:45Speaker 2: And then he went out and asked her to marry him.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Surely that flower setup isn't permanently like that in the backyard.
- 6:50Speaker 2: No, no, no. He had it specially set up for it.
- 6:52Speaker 2: It kind of reminds me when Alex Cooper got engaged
- 6:55Speaker 2: and her partner had this whole fancy setup in the backyard.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I like stand the pressure that Travis would have felt.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I mean, how many millions of people are talking about
- 7:04Speaker 1: this engagement? Everyone has their say about, I mean, everything
- 7:08Speaker 1: has been very complimentary so far, but it's not as
- 7:11Speaker 1: if he could have just, you know, proposed down on
- 7:15Speaker 1: one knee in their kitchen.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Well, it's funny you say that because Ed Kelsey and
- 7:19Speaker 2: Scott Swift actually told him, look, you could go do
- 7:21Speaker 2: it on the side of the road and she would
- 7:22Speaker 2: still love it. Not true. It's funny. I just had
- 7:24Speaker 2: a light bulb moment when you were talking before, Amy.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I'm like, oh my God, Rhys proposed to me in
- 7:29Speaker 2: our backyard.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I've seen all these people on TikTok going, oh, we've
- 7:33Speaker 1: timed it perfectly. I'm also engaged at the same time
- 7:36Speaker 1: as Taylor Swift planning a wedding and people were saying
- 7:39Speaker 1: they didn't know now whether to postpone their wedding dates.
- 7:42Speaker 1: in order to then copy everything that Taylor and Travis do.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Look, I hate to say it, but I don't think
- 7:46Speaker 2: people are going to have the same budget as Travis
- 7:48Speaker 2: and Taylor. So I've been loving the commentary around Travis
- 7:51Speaker 2: changing his name. People are saying, oh, it's going to
- 7:53Speaker 2: be a bit hard to get used to seeing Swift
- 7:54Speaker 2: on the back of his jersey.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah, well, Travis Swift has a nice ring to it.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Maybe he'll follow in the footsteps of Dalton Henshaw taking
- 8:01Speaker 1: Laura's last name. I've seen a bit of speculation online
- 8:04Speaker 1: that Travis might have popped the question after the podcast recording,
- 8:08Speaker 1: because people are saying that you can see the indentation
- 8:12Speaker 1: of the headphone that Taylor was wearing. And people have
- 8:15Speaker 1: also said she's got the same nails on, the same lipstick.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And I don't know, it's kind of adding up.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Well, in hindsight, it seems like we all should have
- 8:24Speaker 2: known because Travis's mum dropped major clues on Sunday when
- 8:27Speaker 2: she appeared on the red carpet at ESPN's special screening
- 8:31Speaker 2: of The Kingdom. So she was asked by a reporter
- 8:33Speaker 2: what was making her son so happy right now. And
- 8:35Speaker 2: she said, I think his mind is settled. That's about
- 8:38Speaker 2: all I can tell you. I think he feels calm
- 8:40Speaker 2: and he feels like he's on a mission and he
- 8:42Speaker 2: knows exactly what he wants. Now, Travis's dad, Ed, was
- 8:45Speaker 2: also there. And when he was asked the same question,
- 8:47Speaker 2: he said, Taylor, there's no question about it. Now, I
- 8:50Speaker 2: think that Tree Payne really needs to get Donna and
- 8:53Speaker 2: Ed Kelsey in to a session with her before Taylor
- 8:56Speaker 2: Swift and Travis potentially start trying to have children because
- 8:59Speaker 2: they're going to give it away, aren't they?
- 9:01Speaker 1: Well, I saw the interview with Donna before I knew
- 9:04Speaker 1: about Taylor getting engaged. And I must admit, I didn't
- 9:07Speaker 1: think anything of it. If anything, a lot of Taylor's
- 9:10Speaker 1: fans were saying that it was weird because Donna never
- 9:12Speaker 1: referenced Taylor by name and she looked really uncomfortable when
- 9:16Speaker 1: she was being interviewed. And now it makes sense because
- 9:19Speaker 1: she was worried about dropping that they were engaged.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Well, she gave it away that she had something to hide.
- 9:24Speaker 2: She said, that's all I can tell you at the moment, essentially.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Okay, let's talk about relatability because being called unrelatable is
- 9:30Speaker 4: something I've gotten more and more over my years on
- 9:33Speaker 4: social media. And you know what? You're not wrong. I'm
- 9:35Speaker 4: not the same person. My life has changed. My circumstances
- 9:37Speaker 4: have changed. If you no longer resonate with that, then
- 9:39Speaker 4: of course that's not going to be relatable.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Ella McGrath, better known by her handle Smiley Citrus, has
- 9:45Speaker 1: hit back at a follower calling her unrelatable. The Adelaide-based
- 9:49Speaker 1: influencer said it's not her job to be relatable and
- 9:52Speaker 1: questioned why some people only want to watch those who
- 9:55Speaker 1: were struggling or miserable. Now, Kate, before we get into it,
- 9:58Speaker 1: can you bring listeners up to speed on who Ella is?
- 10:00Speaker 2: She is a 28-year-old lifestyle and personal finance influencer, and
- 10:04Speaker 2: she's originally from the UK but now lives in Adelaide.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And I love watching her content and spotting places that
- 10:09Speaker 2: I recognize. It's kind of unusual seeing a YouTuber in
- 10:12Speaker 2: Adelaide doing so well.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I keep seeing Dante's popping up on her YouTube. And
- 10:16Speaker 1: that was my pregnancy craving.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I'm like, yes. Now, in terms of her following, she
- 10:20Speaker 2: has amassed over 241,000 followers across her platforms. And that's
- 10:25Speaker 2: from sharing budget content and vlogs. But she's actually been
- 10:28Speaker 2: sharing content online for 10 years now. It's only in
- 10:31Speaker 2: the last three years that she carved out the financial niche.
- 10:34Speaker 2: She used to work as a travel agent before becoming
- 10:36Speaker 2: a full-time content creator. And last month, she announced she
- 10:39Speaker 2: was pregnant.
- 10:40Speaker 1: In terms of Ella's content, I think a big part
- 10:42Speaker 1: of her appeal is that she gives away all of
- 10:44Speaker 1: these pervy details about her own personal finances. So she
- 10:48Speaker 1: does a lot of YouTubes where she goes through exactly
- 10:50Speaker 1: what her monthly budget is and shares what her and
- 10:53Speaker 1: her husband earn. So her husband, Nick, works as a
- 10:56Speaker 1: lawyer at a firm in Adelaide. And I've always wondered,
- 10:59Speaker 1: what must his colleagues think? When she's wanting his salary
- 11:03Speaker 1: on this.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's pretty taboo to share salaries. I wonder
- 11:06Speaker 2: if there's anyone that works with him that watches and thinks, oh,
- 11:08Speaker 2: I don't earn that.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Or I earn more than him.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I do love the transparency though. And it's really inspiring
- 11:13Speaker 1: to see how much they can actually save in a
- 11:15Speaker 1: week because sometimes they'll do a video where they'll do
- 11:18Speaker 1: a no spend week. And it's also great to hear
- 11:21Speaker 1: that transparency because a lot of the time influencers are
- 11:25Speaker 1: very secretive about what they're paid for. And I think
- 11:28Speaker 1: her openness is what has attracted a lot of followers
- 11:31Speaker 1: to her account.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Also the fact that she's really self-aware because she's spoken
- 11:34Speaker 2: in length about her paycheck as an influencer fluctuates a lot.
- 11:38Speaker 2: And sometimes she'll share about having a really good month
- 11:41Speaker 2: and she says, you know, this isn't an everyday kind
- 11:44Speaker 2: of paycheck.
- 11:44Speaker 1: And what I really like about her content too is
- 11:47Speaker 1: it's not just about her running daily errands. The fact
- 11:49Speaker 1: that she used to have a full-time job, you can
- 11:51Speaker 1: see that she comprehends that she is very lucky to
- 11:54Speaker 1: be in this position and And the content she often
- 11:57Speaker 1: shares when she's not talking about her finances is the
- 12:00Speaker 1: reality of being a content creator. So she'll show herself
- 12:03Speaker 1: having meetings with her manager. She explains how she creates
- 12:06Speaker 1: all of her content. And I find that a really
- 12:08Speaker 1: interesting insight into her life.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's clear she takes it on as a
- 12:12Speaker 2: proper job. It's all very planned out and strategic. You know,
- 12:15Speaker 2: this is what I'm going to film. This is what
- 12:17Speaker 2: I'm going to edit. This is how I've actually thought
- 12:19Speaker 2: about this brand deal. And that's why I was surprised
- 12:22Speaker 2: to see that she's been getting quite a lot of
- 12:24Speaker 2: negative comments. So last week, She shared a two-minute video
- 12:27Speaker 2: where she responded to a comment that said, hmm, getting
- 12:30Speaker 2: into the unrelatable territory. So she said it's actually something
- 12:33Speaker 2: that she's been dealing with more and more over the
- 12:36Speaker 2: last couple of years. And she conceded that the person
- 12:38Speaker 2: was correct in that her life and circumstances have changed
- 12:41Speaker 2: and they may now not be relatable to this person's
- 12:44Speaker 2: exact circumstances. However, she defended herself saying it isn't her
- 12:48Speaker 2: job to be relatable to that person.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Now, presumably this comment is in regards to the fact
- 12:53Speaker 1: that Ella's wage has continued to grow. And as we mentioned,
- 12:56Speaker 1: she now does social media full-time.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting because we kind of touched on it
- 13:00Speaker 2: in our subs episode on Thursday about how a lot
- 13:04Speaker 2: of influencers who have full-time jobs and then turn into
- 13:07Speaker 2: full-time content creators are starting to get burnout from being
- 13:11Speaker 2: on social media full-time.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Well, and also the fact that people who have once
- 13:16Speaker 1: followed an influencer because they've enjoyed seeing their nine to five,
- 13:20Speaker 1: as soon as that influencer then becomes a full-time content creator,
- 13:23Speaker 1: people will go, no, I don't want to follow you anymore.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I can't relate.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Yeah. And it is all down to this relatability. It's like, oh, well,
- 13:29Speaker 2: I followed you because you worked in a coffee shop
- 13:31Speaker 2: like I do. And now that you're successful and actually
- 13:34Speaker 2: earning a lot of money from content creating, I don't
- 13:37Speaker 2: want to follow you anymore. In this instance with Ella,
- 13:40Speaker 2: it seems pretty unfair considering that she has just continued
- 13:43Speaker 2: to do what she always has. And that's just openly
- 13:46Speaker 2: talk about her finances because she's still sharing her budgeting
- 13:49Speaker 2: tips She just has a bigger budget now. This is
- 13:51Speaker 2: what Ella had to say on why she continues to
- 13:54Speaker 2: be transparent about her finances.
- 13:56Speaker 4: The reason I share my finances so openly and so
- 13:58Speaker 4: transparently is to open up the conversation around personal finance,
- 14:01Speaker 4: especially for young women. And that starts with transparency. And two,
- 14:04Speaker 4: the numbers provide context, but it's about the habits and
- 14:06Speaker 4: the processes that I've been following since before all of this.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I've just scaled them with me and my income.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Now, Ella went on to tell her followers about a
- 14:13Speaker 1: creator who had struggled with fertility and So she said
- 14:16Speaker 1: this woman had had an IVF baby and is now
- 14:19Speaker 1: being trolled about not being relatable in her postpartum journey.
- 14:22Speaker 1: This is so ridiculous.
- 14:24Speaker 2: When I heard that, I was wondering if she was
- 14:25Speaker 2: talking about Rachel Dillon or Georgie Stevenson. She then went
- 14:28Speaker 2: on to say this.
- 14:29Speaker 4: And like, what is with this phenomenon of people rooting
- 14:32Speaker 4: for others, especially online, until they're deemed too successful, like
- 14:36Speaker 4: too happy? Like, do you just want to exclusively watch
- 14:38Speaker 4: people when they're struggling and miserable so you feel better
- 14:39Speaker 4: about your own life? Like, I just don't get it.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Relatability is so subjective. I feel like the term unrelatable
- 14:44Speaker 4: is just thrown around like an insult and I'm sick
- 14:47Speaker 4: of it. I'm sick of it. What happened to being
- 14:50Speaker 4: inspired by other people's happiness and their successes? Just because
- 14:53Speaker 4: someone has something you don't doesn't mean you can't have
- 14:56Speaker 4: it too. Like we can all have a piece of
- 14:57Speaker 4: the pie. And the beautiful, beautiful thing about social media
- 15:00Speaker 4: is there are so many people you can watch.
- 15:02Speaker 1: I mean, this is the exact reason why so many
- 15:04Speaker 1: creators are concealing how much money they're actually making. Like
- 15:07Speaker 1: there's a few that spring to mind. Almost women have
- 15:10Speaker 1: to play it down now and be like, oh no,
- 15:11Speaker 1: I'm actually not that successful because if I am deemed
- 15:14Speaker 1: as being successful, that means I'm unrelatable.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah, but then if they lie about it, people aren't
- 15:18Speaker 2: happy either. It's so obvious that they're making more money.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I think it's a difficult one because we have seen
- 15:24Speaker 2: this big shift to demand relatability from influencers and it's
- 15:28Speaker 2: a fairly new one in the scheme of social media
- 15:31Speaker 2: because for so many years on Instagram, all we wanted
- 15:34Speaker 2: were these like perfectly curated photos and people are really
- 15:37Speaker 2: sick of that now and they can see through it.
- 15:39Speaker 2: So audiences are wanting people to be real and share
- 15:42Speaker 2: about their real lives. But then when they make it
- 15:45Speaker 2: successful from social media, they're like, oh, I don't want
- 15:47Speaker 2: to see this anymore.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I think this has a lot to do with the
- 15:49Speaker 1: fact that people aren't used to seeing everyday people as influencers.
- 15:54Speaker 1: So there's been a big change. We want to follow
- 15:56Speaker 1: people who are relatable and seem like us and do
- 15:59Speaker 1: a nine to five job. But then suddenly when they
- 16:02Speaker 1: start succeeding, we're like, hang on, wait a second. You're
- 16:05Speaker 1: supposed to be like us.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this new wave of influencers are so
- 16:09Speaker 2: relatable that we see ourselves in them and we're like, oh,
- 16:12Speaker 2: if I stuck to social media, I could also be
- 16:15Speaker 2: like them and earn that amount of money. I think
- 16:17Speaker 2: audiences are a lot more savvy as well. So we
- 16:20Speaker 2: don't want to just be sold to. And I think
- 16:22Speaker 2: this new wave of influencers are a lot smarter. So
- 16:25Speaker 2: creators like Smiley Citrus, they put a lot of effort
- 16:28Speaker 2: into their advertising campaigns. And you can tell that. And
- 16:32Speaker 2: they also have a genuine following. And I noticed recently
- 16:35Speaker 2: with Courtney Mangan, she was talking on Instagram story and
- 16:37Speaker 2: actually thanked her audience for being so supportive with their
- 16:40Speaker 2: paid promotion. Because she said normally when an influencer posts
- 16:43Speaker 2: something that's branded, their engagement literally drops. But she said
- 16:47Speaker 2: she doesn't experience that change at all. And it turns
- 16:50Speaker 2: out that her audience actually gets behind her and purposely
- 16:54Speaker 2: engages with her content because they want to support her
- 16:56Speaker 2: and want her to get more brand deals. where I
- 16:59Speaker 2: think it's the complete opposite for OG influencers like Sky
- 17:02Speaker 2: Wheatley or Ashley Barnes. I think people purposely don't engage
- 17:05Speaker 2: with their content because they're like, oh, they're rich already.
- 17:07Speaker 2: They don't need it.
- 17:08Speaker 1: But do you think if Courtney Magnin started suddenly sharing
- 17:10Speaker 1: about her finances and how much she makes at her
- 17:13Speaker 1: PR company and how much she's made off that particular ad,
- 17:15Speaker 1: people would be so supportive?
- 17:17Speaker 2: Well, I think she's, self-aware enough to know what her
- 17:20Speaker 2: audience want and doesn't want from her content. And that's
- 17:22Speaker 2: why it works for her.
- 17:23Speaker 1: But if Courtney suddenly quit her job and just became
- 17:26Speaker 1: an influencer, I think we'd see the same sort of
- 17:28Speaker 1: stuff happening that's happening to Ella McGrath.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Oh yeah, definitely. Courtney has spoken recently about how people say, oh,
- 17:34Speaker 2: I want to see more content from your work. And
- 17:37Speaker 2: I do think that we're going to see more and
- 17:38Speaker 2: more content creators having to keep a part-time job at
- 17:42Speaker 2: the very least to stay relatable to their audience and
- 17:45Speaker 2: also to have content to share.
- 17:46Speaker 1: It's crazy, isn't it, just how much money people can
- 17:49Speaker 1: make online? Like the other day I was on TikTok
- 17:51Speaker 1: and I saw this woman pop up who said, I've
- 17:53Speaker 1: now made the switch and I'm just doing content as
- 17:56Speaker 1: my main job. And I clicked on her page and
- 17:59Speaker 1: the content she was sharing was just her cleaning up
- 18:01Speaker 1: her apartment. I was just like, wow, we're living in
- 18:04Speaker 1: an incredible world.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I do wonder though if this rhetoric is going to
- 18:07Speaker 2: change when society actually deems the role of an influencer
- 18:10Speaker 2: a proper job because there's so much scepticism and snobbery
- 18:14Speaker 2: around how difficult the role is. And I think that's
- 18:17Speaker 2: a bit of a hangover from the initial days of
- 18:19Speaker 2: bikini models just earning these massive paychecks for posting thirst
- 18:23Speaker 2: traps online and putting no effort into paid promotion.
- 18:26Speaker 1: But why is it that we as a society is like, oh, okay,
- 18:30Speaker 1: we're okay with these extremely glamorous people earning all this
- 18:35Speaker 1: money for not doing very much work. However, if I
- 18:38Speaker 1: really relate to somebody who previously worked a nine to five,
- 18:42Speaker 1: suddenly them earning more money is really pissing me off.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think people aren't happy with it and
- 18:49Speaker 2: that's why we've seen this revolt and more normal people
- 18:52Speaker 2: becoming content creators. I think the issue is that there
- 18:55Speaker 2: is a saturation now of influencers and not enough money
- 18:58Speaker 2: to go around. So a lot of influencers now are
- 19:01Speaker 2: earning what you'd probably typically earn in a nine-to-five job.
- 19:05Speaker 5: I'm literally crying laughing like I actually, like I can't.
- 19:11Speaker 6: Tammy Hembrough has sensationally unmasked one of her trolls on TikTok.
- 19:16Speaker 6: The OG Australian influencer was in high spirits when she
- 19:19Speaker 6: named and shamed the middle-aged man. In fact, she opened
- 19:22Speaker 6: the video by saying she'd been crying with laughter in
- 19:24Speaker 6: the car about the situation. Tammy explained that there are
- 19:28Speaker 6: people who go out of their way to visit her
- 19:30Speaker 6: page and comment or DM her really crazy shit every day.
- 19:34Speaker 6: And she laughed at the prospect of these people thinking
- 19:37Speaker 6: she would take what they said to heart, saying that
- 19:39Speaker 6: they clearly have nothing better to do with their time
- 19:42Speaker 6: and were unhappy with themselves. In order to give the
- 19:45Speaker 6: trolling situation context, she decided to share with her 2
- 19:48Speaker 6: million followers on TikTok one of the more persistent trolls.
- 19:52Speaker 6: This is what she said.
- 19:54Speaker 3: You effing weirdo.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Like, that's weirdo, like, weirdo behavior.
- 19:58Speaker 3: You're weird. Guys, anyway, I'm going to show you an example.
- 20:03Speaker 5: Because nine times out of ten, it's like some old
- 20:06Speaker 5: creepy man who's... probably a freaking incel and is just like,
- 20:12Speaker 5: it's weirdo, weirdo.
- 20:15Speaker 6: I feel like I haven't heard the word weirdo used
- 20:18Speaker 6: in so long and so many times in a row.
- 20:22Speaker 1: It perfectly summed up the person that she was talking about.
- 20:25Speaker 1: The guy is just a complete weirdo. And for anyone
- 20:28Speaker 1: wondering what an incel is, it is someone who's an
- 20:31Speaker 1: involuntary celibate person. And often these people are men and
- 20:34Speaker 1: they're wanting to find a romantic or sexual partner. but can't.
- 20:38Speaker 6: Yeah, and this term has been more recently associated with
- 20:40Speaker 6: this online subculture of men who just go out there
- 20:44Speaker 6: and hate women, sort of a part of the manosphere,
- 20:46Speaker 6: and they're very hostile towards women.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I'm wondering if Tammy has had an influx of them
- 20:50Speaker 1: recently due to her relationship with Bailey Smith.
- 20:54Speaker 6: I definitely think so because I've noticed a lot of
- 20:57Speaker 6: wives and girlfriends of footy players having to deal with
- 21:00Speaker 6: creeps like this as well.
- 21:01Speaker 1: The best part about this video is Tammy went on
- 21:04Speaker 1: to name and shame this man to her two million followers. Normally,
- 21:07Speaker 1: I don't like doxing, but in this case, I think
- 21:10Speaker 1: it was warranted. So she showed a photo of him
- 21:13Speaker 1: alongside his handle. Let's throw to what she said.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Peter Wallwork79 replies to every single story that I post
- 21:26Speaker 5: saying S-O-U-T, S-O-U-T, like... Oh, my God, yeah.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Peter.
- 21:35Speaker 3: What the fuck are you doing with your life, mate?
- 21:38Speaker 2: Like, come on.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Makes me feel sick. It makes me feel actually sick.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Anyway, lol.
- 21:48Speaker 1: This guy just looked like the sort of person that
- 21:50Speaker 1: you would expect would be writing these awful comments.
- 21:53Speaker 6: I actually recoiled when I saw his image because it'd
- 21:56Speaker 6: be very intimidating getting messages daily from this guy calling
- 22:00Speaker 6: you a slut. but I'm glad that she could make
- 22:03Speaker 6: light of it and have a laugh about it.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I mean, to set the scene for people who haven't
- 22:06Speaker 1: seen the photo, this guy, he looks what, middle-aged, like
- 22:09Speaker 1: in his 50s. He looks like he probably smokes a
- 22:11Speaker 1: pack of cigarettes a day. Was a truck driver, I'm
- 22:14Speaker 1: pretty sure. Yeah, he was dressed in fluoros.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Well, he looked a bit scary. He did look scary.
- 22:18Speaker 1: He looked like a mugshot almost.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:20Speaker 6: Sadly though, it's not just men like this that are
- 22:22Speaker 6: messaging Tammy abusive messages. She said that Girls do it
- 22:26Speaker 6: too and it makes her really sad. And she told
- 22:28Speaker 6: women it's ugly energy and you're making yourselves look ugly
- 22:31Speaker 6: when you do this. Tammy then said this.
- 22:35Speaker 3: If you're watching all my videos, watching all my stories, like,
- 22:39Speaker 3: I'm sorry, that is giving fan. So, like, you are
- 22:44Speaker 3: embarrassing yourself. Like, why do you care about me and
- 22:50Speaker 3: my life?
- 22:51Speaker 5: Go away.
- 22:54Speaker 6: She's so right because there is such a fine line
- 22:56Speaker 6: between stans and trolls. And a troll is usually a
- 23:00Speaker 6: stan who has become disillusioned with this influencer, perhaps that
- 23:05Speaker 6: they've done something and they feel like their parasocial relationship
- 23:08Speaker 6: has been ruined. So I'm guessing this guy that likes
- 23:10Speaker 6: to message Tammy abusing her every day used to really
- 23:13Speaker 6: like her and then maybe she dared to date someone
- 23:15Speaker 6: in her real life.
- 23:16Speaker 1: I think that might be the case for the women
- 23:18Speaker 1: who are messaging Tammy nasty things now, but not so
- 23:21Speaker 1: much in the instance of this middle-aged man, I think
- 23:24Speaker 1: he's just a troll. He's like the typical man that
- 23:26Speaker 1: would sit in the Daily Mail comments. Yeah, but he
- 23:29Speaker 1: does it every day.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Like there's a.
- 23:31Speaker 6: Difference between maybe doing it once on a video. Like
- 23:33Speaker 6: this guy's obsessed for a reason. Like I think there's
- 23:35Speaker 6: more to it.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But Abbey Chatfield and other creators like that attract these
- 23:37Speaker 1: kinds of people as well. They just target particular women
- 23:40Speaker 1: because they're disgusting. As you said, he is probably one
- 23:43Speaker 1: of these incel men. And in their forums, they probably
- 23:46Speaker 1: share links to creators like Abbey Chatfield and Tammy Hembrough.
- 23:49Speaker 6: Well, talking about Abbey Chatfield, she actually commented under Tammy's
- 23:52Speaker 6: video saying, I'm screaming at this.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Ha ha ha.
- 23:55Speaker 6: So obsessed. And I wonder if there is potentially a
- 23:58Speaker 6: friendship brewing between Abby and Tammy because a couple of
- 24:01Speaker 6: days later, Tammy posted a video dancing on the beach
- 24:04Speaker 6: to Abby's boyfriend, Adam Hyde's new song, Dancing To, which
- 24:08Speaker 6: is the song he wrote about Abby. And Tammy captioned
- 24:11Speaker 6: the video, Abby sis, I watched your video 20 times
- 24:14Speaker 6: and cried.
- 24:14Speaker 2: I love, love.
- 24:16Speaker 6: So the video Tammy's referring to, I don't know if
- 24:18Speaker 6: you've seen it, Amy. is the one where Abby reacts
- 24:20Speaker 6: to listening to the song the first time.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, her video has gone viral and so has Adam's song.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Everybody is sharing TikToks using the sound and a lot
- 24:30Speaker 1: of people are saying that they want this to be
- 24:31Speaker 1: their summer anthem.
- 24:33Speaker 6: Well, the video Tammy shared already had over a million views.
- 24:36Speaker 6: So Abby ended up writing underneath it, Tammy with crying
- 24:39Speaker 6: faces and love hearts, this is so gorge. Someone else
- 24:42Speaker 6: wrote under the video, the fact you credited Abby, love it,
- 24:45Speaker 6: power to women. And Tammy replied, I love her. So
- 24:48Speaker 6: I feel like something's coming between those two.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Maybe a tell-all podcast interview.
- 24:51Speaker 6: Well, Tammy's been pretty busy because this week she starred
- 24:55Speaker 6: in a Christmas pyjama campaign. And I got really excited
- 24:58Speaker 6: because I'm like, okay, this is the sign that we
- 25:01Speaker 6: can start celebrating Christmas. It's happening. The influencer Christmas pyjama
- 25:05Speaker 6: campaigns are coming out.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Well, you were so excited that you shared it on
- 25:07Speaker 1: our Instagram page, so much so that some people thought
- 25:10Speaker 1: that we were doing a sponsored post for them.
- 25:12Speaker 6: Yeah, they're like, oh, okay, why have you not disclosed
- 25:15Speaker 6: the partnership?
- 25:15Speaker 2: I was like, what? You clearly don't get me. I
- 25:17Speaker 2: love Christmas.
- 25:18Speaker 1: We're just saddos that like Christmas, okay? It's nothing to
- 25:20Speaker 1: do with the brand itself.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:22Speaker 6: Well, the brand is a small business. They're called Cinnamon Baby. Again,
- 25:25Speaker 6: this is not a plug for them, but it's pretty
- 25:27Speaker 6: interesting because They had a Father's Day campaign recently with
- 25:31Speaker 6: Tammy's ex, Matt Poole, and his partner, Annalise, and Tammy
- 25:35Speaker 6: and Matt's daughter, Posey, and their baby, Parker. So Posey
- 25:39Speaker 6: is going to be in the Father's Day campaign and
- 25:40Speaker 6: also the Christmas one.
- 25:42Speaker 1: That is kind of awkward, isn't it?
- 25:44Speaker 2: It is a little bit.
- 25:45Speaker 6: I was just thinking, though, how much budget does this
- 25:47Speaker 6: company have for influencers? Because those are some pretty big guests.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Yeah, because I've seen a lot of TikToks from the
- 25:52Speaker 1: owner of Cinnamon Baby, and she gives some insights into
- 25:55Speaker 1: what it's like running her brand. And from that perspective,
- 25:58Speaker 1: it looks kind of like quite a small business. You
- 26:00Speaker 1: wouldn't actually expect them to have such a huge influencer spend,
- 26:04Speaker 1: but I have seen influencers like Sarah's Day commenting on
- 26:07Speaker 1: their content. So they are a very popular brand with influencers.
- 26:12Speaker 6: Well, talking about Tammy's exes, we've covered Matt Paul and
- 26:15Speaker 6: we've covered Matt Sikowsky, but we need to talk about
- 26:17Speaker 6: Rhys Hawkins because his new girlfriend, Liv Kelly, who is
- 26:21Speaker 6: also an influencer, has actually opened up about how they met.
- 26:24Speaker 6: So she did a Q & A and, of course,
- 26:26Speaker 6: she was asked about Rhys. And she revealed that they
- 26:28Speaker 6: actually met online, I'm guessing an Instagram DM slide, and
- 26:32Speaker 6: she added that they were both really content on their
- 26:34Speaker 6: own and not searching for a relationship, but I guess
- 26:36Speaker 6: that's when you meet your person.
- 26:38Speaker 1: It could have also potentially been Raya.
- 26:40Speaker 3: True.
- 26:41Speaker 6: I think it's probably more likely Instagram, though, considering they've
- 26:43Speaker 6: both got very big followings.
- 26:45Speaker 1: There's the old flame emoji back and forth.
- 26:47Speaker 6: Yeah, but you wouldn't think it would actually turn into
- 26:48Speaker 6: something serious with her living on the Gold Coast and
- 26:51Speaker 6: Rhys Hawkins in Bali.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Do you think he'll move?
- 26:53Speaker 6: Because his kids are on the Gold Coast.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Well, you think he would have moved for the kids previously.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Yes, exactly. I don't know.
- 26:59Speaker 1: If he's not moving back for the kids, maybe he's
- 27:01Speaker 1: not going to move back for her. Now, let's get
- 27:04Speaker 1: into our Friday debriefing, Kate. I need to call you
- 27:07Speaker 1: out because on our recent subscriber episode, You had a
- 27:11Speaker 1: go at Laura Henshaw for appearing on the kick pod
- 27:14Speaker 1: when she was very under the weather. So she sounded really,
- 27:17Speaker 1: really croaky. You don't sound too good yourself.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Look, I didn't have a go. I just said I
- 27:21Speaker 2: couldn't believe that she was made to work under those conditions.
- 27:25Speaker 2: And also the audio was quite bad. I don't think
- 27:28Speaker 2: I sound as croaky as her, but I'm starting to
- 27:31Speaker 2: get like that because we've been recording for quite some time.
- 27:34Speaker 2: The awkward thing is we actually recorded our Tammy Hembrough
- 27:37Speaker 2: troll episode yesterday just to break down the fourth wall
- 27:41Speaker 2: when I had a sore throat, but I wasn't actually
- 27:44Speaker 2: fully croaky yet. And we actually recorded virtually. So I
- 27:47Speaker 2: haven't passed it on to you or anything like that.
- 27:49Speaker 2: So sorry if there is a difference between my voice
- 27:52Speaker 2: in those two segments.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Look, you're excused and hopefully you'll be sounding a lot
- 27:55Speaker 1: better in Tuesday's episode. Now I've got a rather embarrassing
- 27:58Speaker 1: story I need to share with the listeners and hopefully
- 28:01Speaker 1: it'll make me feel better by sharing it. So I'm
- 28:03Speaker 1: trying to say this sensitively to any of the male
- 28:05Speaker 1: listeners who, the 2% who tune in, maybe just tune
- 28:08Speaker 1: out for this story. So basically I have my period
- 28:12Speaker 1: back and because I'm home a lot now with Harry,
- 28:16Speaker 1: it is quite difficult to get out to the shop.
- 28:18Speaker 1: So the other day I text Dale and I said, look, Dale,
- 28:21Speaker 1: can you please pick up some pads on the way home?
- 28:25Speaker 1: And anyone who's been postpartum will understand my need for
- 28:28Speaker 1: a particular kind of sanitary item. I didn't need a
- 28:32Speaker 1: thin pad. I needed quite a heavy flowing pad. And
- 28:37Speaker 1: Dale was like, I have no idea. which items you need.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Can you send me a screenshot? I said, no worries.
- 28:44Speaker 1: So I went onto Woolworth's website. I screenshot what I
- 28:47Speaker 1: needed and I decided to drop it into my iMessages,
- 28:50Speaker 1: not realizing that the last person I text, who was
- 28:53Speaker 1: actually a client for Hula Media, somehow I dropped it
- 28:57Speaker 1: in and sent it to them. And my heart, no,
- 29:01Speaker 1: it was a, it was a female, but my heart
- 29:03Speaker 1: absolutely dropped. And I was like, for fuck's sake, I
- 29:05Speaker 1: actually cannot be Even like the person I sent it
- 29:08Speaker 1: to would probably find it funny, but I just didn't
- 29:10Speaker 1: have the energy to explain it. I just unsent it instantly.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I unsent it. So I have no idea if they
- 29:17Speaker 1: saw it, but I unsent it.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Well, you didn't even acknowledge it.
- 29:20Speaker 1: No, I didn't acknowledge it.
- 29:23Speaker 2: That would make me feel more awkward if someone didn't
- 29:24Speaker 2: acknowledge it.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't think she saw it. I did
- 29:28Speaker 1: it within like 10 seconds.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Yeah, but doesn't it still come up like Amy has
