- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, August 9 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:22Of today's mass, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following, The church on this day makes us celebrate the omnipotence of God and his infinite mercy in dealing with sinners. Saint Paul in the epistle repeats to the Corinthians the miraculous transformation which has taken place in him through the grace of God. The healing of the deaf and dumb related by Saint Mark and the gospel is the story of divine mercy towards each one of us.
- 0:59Deaf to the teachings of the master, we had become dumb by sin and incapable of praising God. But repeating according to his command what Christ did, the church in baptism has opened our ears and loosed our tongue so that henceforth we may hear the divine word and freely proclaim our faith. Having put our hope in God, the gradual tells us we have received succor. The offertory tells us that the Lord has healed our wounds, and the introit tells us that he has given us strength and courage. Commemorated today is Saint Romanos, a soldier who begged of Saint Lawrence to baptize him.
- 1:54This he obtained and in his turn was cruelly beaten and beheaded. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. This god who dwells apart in holiness, who knits families together in unity of will, He will give his people strength and courage.
- 2:27Arise, O Lord, and let thy enemies be scattered, and let all that hate thee flee from before thy face. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. This God who dwells apart in holiness, who knits families together in unity of will, he will give his people strength and courage. The Collect, let us pray.
- 3:09Almighty and everlasting God who in the abundance of thy loving kindness art want to go beyond both the merits and the requests of thy suppliants, pour down upon us thy mercy, that thou mayest forgive us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and grant us those good things which our prayer does not presume to ask. A commemoration of Saint Romanus. Grant we beseech you Almighty God that through the intercession of your blessed martyr Romanus we may be delivered from all afflictions of the body and cleansed from all evil thoughts of the mind through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians.
- 4:20Here, brethren, is an account of the gospel I preached to you. It was this that was handed on to you. Upon this your faith rests. Through this, if you keep in mind the tenor of its preaching, you are in the way of salvation. Unless indeed your belief was ill founded.
- 4:44The chief message I handed on to you as it was handed on to me was that Christ as the scriptures had foretold died for our sins. That he was buried and then as the scriptures had foretold rose again on the third day. That he was seen by Kiphas, then by the 11 apostles, and afterwards by more than 500 of the brethren at once, most of whom are alive at this day, though some have gone to their rest. Then he was seen by James, then by all the apostles. And last of all, I too saw him like the last child that comes to birth unexpectedly.
- 5:43Of all the apostles, I am the least. Nay, I am not fit to be called an apostle since there was a time when I persecuted the church of God. Only by God's grace, I am what I am. And the grace he has shown me has not been without fruit. I have worked harder than all of them, or rather it was not I, but the grace of God working with me.
- 6:19The gradual, in God hath my heart confided, and I have been helped, and my flesh hath flourished again, And with my will I will give praise to him. Unto thee will I cry, O Lord. O God, be not thou silent. Depart not from me. Alleluia.
- 6:46Alleluia. Rejoice to God our helper. Sing aloud to the God of Jacob. Take a pleasant psalm with the harp. Alleluia.
- 7:02A continuation of the holy gospel according to Mark. At that time Jesus set out again from the region of Tyre and came by way of Sidon to the Sea Of Galilee right into the region of Decapolis. And they brought to him a man who was deaf and dumb with the prayer that he would lay his hand upon him. And he took him aside out of the multitude. He put his fingers into his ears and spat and touched his tongue.
- 7:39Then he looked up to heaven and sighed. A feta, he said, that is be opened. Whereupon his ears were opened and the bond which tied his tongue was loosed and he talked plainly, and he laid a strict charge on them not to speak of it to anyone. But the more he charged them, the more widely they published it and were more than ever astonished. He has done well, they said.
- 8:16In all his doings, he has made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. The offertory. I will extol thee, O Lord, for thou hast upheld me and hast not made my enemies to rejoice over me. O Lord, I have cried to thee, and thou hast healed me. The secret.
- 8:47Look down, we beseech thee, O Lord, upon our service, that what we offer may be an acceptable gift unto Thee in support to our frailty. A commemoration of St. Romanus. O Lord, graciously accept through the merits of your blessed martyr and bishop Romanus the sacrificial gifts dedicated to you and grant they may prove to be for us a lasting help through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 9:40The Preface of the Most Holy Trinity Just it is and fitting right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, who together with thine only begotten son and the Holy Ghost art one God, one Lord, not in the oneness of a single person, but in the trinity of one substance. For what we believe by thy revelation of thy glory, the same do we believe of thy son, the same of the Holy Ghost without difference or separation so that in confessing the true and eternal Godhead distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. In praise of which the angels and archangels, the cherubim also and Seraphim day by day exalt without end with one voice saying, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
- 11:06Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Honor the Lord with thy substance and with the first of all thy fruits. And thy barns shall be filled with abundance and thy presses shall run over with wine.
- 11:36The Post Communion. Let us pray. We beseech thee, O Lord, that we who have received the sacrament of salvation may find both in mind and in body the help which it contains, that being saved in both we may glory in the fullness of the heavenly remedy. A commemoration of Saint Romanus, we beseech you, O Almighty God, that we who have eaten the food of heaven may find in it by the intercession of blessed the one only is name unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 12:37In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God. Saint Romanos, pray for us.
