- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to Hunt's rut Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:04Speaker 1: the latest reports from the whitetail woods, presented by First Light,
- 0:08Speaker 1: creating proven versatile hunting apparel for the stand, saddle or blind.
- 0:13Speaker 1: First Light Go farther, stay longer, and now your hosts
- 0:18Speaker 1: Case Smith and Tyler Jones.
- 0:20Speaker 2: This is Retfresh Radio. Y'all, I'm your host k C.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Smith and you probably noticed, but a cold front rolled
- 0:28Speaker 2: through last week.
- 0:28Speaker 3: It was awesome.
- 0:30Speaker 2: A lot of big deer went down and there's a
- 0:32Speaker 2: lot of positive reports. However, acorns or acorns, depending on
- 0:36Speaker 2: where you're at in the country you're starting to fall,
- 0:39Speaker 2: doesn't have a positive or negative impact on your hunt.
- 0:43Speaker 2: This is Retfresh.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Welcome to rutfresh Radio. Everyone, brought to you by first
- 0:56Speaker 2: Light Gear. I'm your host k C.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Smith.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Tyler Jones is in the building, and Mark Kenyon is
- 1:02Speaker 2: on the phone.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Apparently the Boss is here. We're not sure which one
- 1:08Speaker 3: that is.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Well, you said the King is in the building. I
- 1:10Speaker 4: said that earlier. You said I'm in the building, so
- 1:13Speaker 4: oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah yeah yeah.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Well, I mean a number of whitetail bucks have gone
- 1:18Speaker 2: down so far. This yeah, yeah, congrats to all who
- 1:21Speaker 2: have participated and said thing. One of these people on
- 1:25Speaker 2: the phone right now or on the podcast has shot
- 1:29Speaker 2: more whitetail Bucks than the other two. So doing what
- 1:33Speaker 2: we do, I think that would like kind of point
- 1:37Speaker 2: to Kingship, wouldn't it?
- 1:39Speaker 3: How does? How does it work?
- 1:41Speaker 5: Exactly?
- 1:41Speaker 3: Mark way In?
- 1:44Speaker 5: So I'm totally lost right now.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I'm not surprised at all.
- 1:49Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:50Speaker 6: I feel like this is like when you've got a
- 1:52Speaker 6: get together with like all your friends, and your friends
- 1:55Speaker 6: all have kids, and then if the kids are of
- 1:56Speaker 6: a certain age, they can go all play in the
- 1:58Speaker 6: other room, and so you most just let the kids
- 2:00Speaker 6: play on their own indo of the room, But every
- 2:02Speaker 6: once in.
- 2:02Speaker 5: A while you realize, like, oh, it's weirdly quiet over there.
- 2:06Speaker 5: I need to go and peek my head in that.
- 2:08Speaker 5: That's what I've been doing with the with Wired Hunt's
- 2:11Speaker 5: Fresh Radio.
- 2:11Speaker 6: I let the kids go play in the room for
- 2:13Speaker 6: a while, but this because like, I need to get
- 2:15Speaker 6: my head back here and see what the heck Tyler
- 2:17Speaker 6: and Casey are doing.
- 2:18Speaker 5: And now that I've done that, I.
- 2:19Speaker 6: Realized that I had ample cause to be concerned.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Have you ever picked your head in the door and
- 2:26Speaker 2: then realize one of those kids is big and then
- 2:28Speaker 2: they like wedge your head in between the door and
- 2:30Speaker 2: the doorframe with the door and smash it a few times.
- 2:34Speaker 5: That's yet to happen.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Okay, just has been in the realm of possibility marks.
- 2:40Speaker 5: In the cars.
- 2:41Speaker 6: But I think I think what you're trying to say
- 2:43Speaker 6: is that Tyler's killed more deer.
- 2:45Speaker 5: Than me this year, therefore he should.
- 2:48Speaker 7: Be the king of wired hunt.
- 2:49Speaker 8: Is that what?
- 2:50Speaker 3: I don't think he really won that position. But no,
- 2:54Speaker 3: you can maintain it, Mark or like you have it.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Uh, lots of good things have been going on. Once
- 3:00Speaker 2: we get make it past our I'm still middle school Banner.
- 3:06Speaker 9: But uh.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Yeah, you've been doing some hunting, Hullmark apparently a lot.
- 3:11Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, and I guess that's what these shows are
- 3:14Speaker 6: supposed to be about, right sometimes from the field. Yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 6: and yeah, I've been out seven of the last eight
- 3:21Speaker 6: days here in Michigan, and uh yeah, I have been
- 3:25Speaker 6: seeing a lot, have been hunting myself and then also
- 3:29Speaker 6: mentoring a couple of new hunters for four of those days.
- 3:33Speaker 6: So yes, I've I've had some interesting, some interesting observations.
- 3:38Speaker 5: I can share whatever you want me to share.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I want to know how your mentor hunters did well.
- 3:47Speaker 6: We had a fun hunt. Unfortunately nobody killed a deer.
- 3:51Speaker 6: They were trying to kill their first deer with bo
- 3:54Speaker 6: both of them so didn't actually feel tagged. But they
- 3:59Speaker 6: both had their closest call ever with the deer. So
- 4:03Speaker 6: they both, you know, I think, had a really cool experience.
- 4:06Speaker 6: They both learned a lot, and both came.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Or just like from being in the woods, hopefully lit
- 4:13Speaker 2: it and both now we're poking fun. But I bet
- 4:17Speaker 2: they were very appreciative to have you in the woods.
- 4:19Speaker 2: If nothing else, you spent a lot of time in
- 4:21Speaker 2: the woods, right, And are these kind of newer hunters?
- 4:25Speaker 6: Yeah, so these are two guys were who were new,
- 4:28Speaker 6: brand new hunters two years ago and I was actually
- 4:30Speaker 6: with both of them when they killed their very first
- 4:34Speaker 6: year ever. This was a field to fork program that
- 4:38Speaker 6: we host over on the back forty and so I
- 4:39Speaker 6: got to mentor both of them separately back in twenty one.
- 4:43Speaker 6: Both killed the first year with a gun, and then
- 4:46Speaker 6: the year and a half or two years since. I've
- 4:48Speaker 6: continued to stay in touch with them and try to
- 4:50Speaker 6: help them on their journey. And we went out together
- 4:52Speaker 6: again last year, and then this year we came back
- 4:56Speaker 6: to the Back forty and I was hopefully going to
- 4:57Speaker 6: give them that final training opportunity and I was hoping
- 5:02Speaker 6: we could get their first dear with the bowl now
- 5:04Speaker 6: that they've started bowl hunting, but didn't quite come together,
- 5:07Speaker 6: but man, it was.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Close, as well as close as you can get.
- 5:10Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Well, and if you're listening and you don't know what
- 5:13Speaker 2: the Back forty is, there was a series on media
- 5:16Speaker 2: that will link to in the show description that kind
- 5:19Speaker 2: of chronicled a little bit of the land stuff there
- 5:22Speaker 2: on the Back forty for two years.
- 5:24Speaker 5: I think, right, Mark, Yeah, two years.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And then now since then that property is being used
- 5:30Speaker 2: for a lot of hunts, like what you're referring to.
- 5:32Speaker 3: So pretty cool deal.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I actually saw in your story that y'all were out
- 5:35Speaker 2: there on the Back forty, and I.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Was like, oh, that's cool. I kind of put it together.
- 5:39Speaker 2: You know, I should have kind of remembered that, but
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know when you said that, it was like, that's
- 5:43Speaker 2: pretty and apparently looking pretty nice out there.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Huh, Yeah, it really is. The habitat is looking great.
- 5:49Speaker 6: That transformation that we started back like five years ago,
- 5:53Speaker 6: has been continued now by the National Deer Association. So
- 5:56Speaker 6: the volunteers have been doing a great job. It looks awesome.
- 5:59Speaker 6: I mean, it looks like a deer and wildlife paradise.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Now what's interesting. And I'll just kind of jump right
- 6:05Speaker 6: in here with a little bit an observation for you
- 6:07Speaker 6: guys that might be useful for the people. You know,
- 6:10Speaker 6: we had all sorts of beautiful secluded green food plots
- 6:16Speaker 6: tucked in the middle of switch grass like this. The
- 6:18Speaker 6: whole farm is now like really thick prairie and switch
- 6:22Speaker 6: grass like incredible cover everywhere. There's nothing that's not great
- 6:25Speaker 6: cover now except for these tucked away food plots, which
- 6:28Speaker 6: are then tight next to timber bedding too. So I mean,
- 6:31Speaker 6: you couldn't ask for a better early season setup. And
- 6:35Speaker 6: there's as far as we know, has not been anyone
- 6:37Speaker 6: in there in three weeks. But despite that, almost nothing
- 6:41Speaker 6: was keying in on the green food plots. Like we
- 6:43Speaker 6: saw very very very little deer activity in the food plots,
- 6:47Speaker 6: and the little bit that we did see was very
- 6:50Speaker 6: very late, like the last couple minutes of daylight.
- 6:54Speaker 5: What we did see, there's one camera that the NBA
- 6:56Speaker 5: has out there and that camera was on.
- 6:58Speaker 6: A red oak tree and they were deer hammering the
- 7:01Speaker 6: red oak acorns, and so that was kind of interesting
- 7:05Speaker 6: to see that they're really key than on those acorns.
- 7:07Speaker 6: And that's something that I've seen on my other spots
- 7:10Speaker 6: that I personally hunt. I've got cameras on a couple
- 7:13Speaker 6: of spots like that, and they can observe a couple
- 7:15Speaker 6: spots like that, and same thing like my cameras that
- 7:18Speaker 6: are on green plots. Not a whole lot of activity
- 7:21Speaker 6: spots with acorns, a lot of deer.
- 7:23Speaker 5: So that's not a huge surprise.
- 7:25Speaker 6: Right at this time of the year, that's pretty common,
- 7:27Speaker 6: but it's very exaggerated. I feel like right now, I
- 7:30Speaker 6: think most people that you guys have talked to over
- 7:32Speaker 6: the last couple of weeks and that I have all
- 7:34Speaker 6: talked about the bumper crop of acorns across big parts
- 7:37Speaker 6: of the country. And I think that's the case, Like
- 7:40Speaker 6: there are a lot of acorns out there and deer
- 7:44Speaker 6: are really getting after them. So you know, that's been
- 7:48Speaker 6: something that I've actually last night I tried to key
- 7:51Speaker 6: in on that very thing.
- 7:52Speaker 5: I said, all right, you know, it's I've got.
- 7:54Speaker 6: Plots like a hunt but I'm going to dive into
- 7:56Speaker 6: the timber right next to where my target buck lives,
- 7:59Speaker 6: and there's an oak flat in there that historically there's
- 8:02Speaker 6: been a lot deer and and I thought I'd give
- 8:05Speaker 6: it a swing in there and count on him king
- 8:07Speaker 6: in on those acorns. I'd actually seen two stemi mature
- 8:12Speaker 6: bucks doing that on the second day of the hunting
- 8:14Speaker 6: season here in Michigan from afar.
- 8:16Speaker 5: I could see them working the edge of these oaks.
- 8:19Speaker 6: So so that's something I've been trying to do myself.
- 8:24Speaker 4: So you've been hunting quite a bit, which I didn't
- 8:29Speaker 4: know that you still had that passion as much as
- 8:32Speaker 4: you troutfish. What have you been seeing besides that as
- 8:39Speaker 4: far as actual like bucks, you know, like, what's the
- 8:43Speaker 4: what's the report there in Michigan?
- 8:46Speaker 6: Well, a lot of buck activity despite you know, last
- 8:50Speaker 6: week around this time, you know, you had that hot
- 8:53Speaker 6: weather across a lot of country, and I took a
- 8:56Speaker 6: couple of hunts on those hot days in sort of
- 8:59Speaker 6: observation type sets and ended up still seeing you know,
- 9:02Speaker 6: good activity.
- 9:03Speaker 5: I can't remember if we talked.
- 9:05Speaker 6: I guess well I wasn't on last week's episode, but
- 9:07Speaker 6: the night before the opener in Michigan, I observed my
- 9:10Speaker 6: target buck moving in daylight when I was glassing from
- 9:13Speaker 6: a hilltop, you know, by forty five mins for dark.
- 9:18Speaker 6: And then two days later, like I mentioned, I was
- 9:20Speaker 6: out again in an observation stand safer location because of
- 9:24Speaker 6: that hot weather, but still in the game kind of set,
- 9:26Speaker 6: and saw a three year old and a three maybe
- 9:30Speaker 6: four year old buck both moving that last half hour
- 9:34Speaker 6: aro on the oaks and then on the.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Back forty hunt.
- 9:39Speaker 6: I was just talking about, you know, late late movement
- 9:42Speaker 6: despite that cold front.
- 9:44Speaker 5: I was surprised by that.
- 9:45Speaker 6: With this front that just moved through, you know over
- 9:47Speaker 6: the weekend, lots and lots of big deer getting.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Shot all over the place. So I thought, you know.
- 9:51Speaker 6: In this terrific habitat in the back for it, we'd
- 9:53Speaker 6: be seeing a lot of early movement, and it just
- 9:56Speaker 6: didn't happen for us. But I don't know to what
- 9:59Speaker 6: I said, is like, were they all in the timber
- 10:02Speaker 6: on acorns. We don't have big timber and a bunch
- 10:04Speaker 6: of acorns in the back forty so that could have
- 10:07Speaker 6: been happening elsewhere. But we did see a mature buck
- 10:10Speaker 6: two nights in a row. One of the guys had
- 10:13Speaker 6: it come across in front of him at thirty six yards.
- 10:16Speaker 6: It was just too long shot for him to feel comfortable.
- 10:18Speaker 6: So he did see, you know, a good buck moving
- 10:20Speaker 6: in daylight. And then last night we saw that same
- 10:23Speaker 6: good buck the last like sixty seconds of daylight cruising
- 10:28Speaker 6: out of range. So that's a long winded way of saying,
- 10:32Speaker 6: you know, both on the warm days and on the
- 10:34Speaker 6: great cool, cold other days, I have been seeing decent
- 10:37Speaker 6: bucks moving that last.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Hour of daylight still.
- 10:41Speaker 6: And one last thing in my long rambling observation here,
- 10:45Speaker 6: I just told this whole thing about how it seems
- 10:48Speaker 6: like the deer king on acorns and not king on
- 10:51Speaker 6: the green. Right, So I'm going to give folks a
- 10:54Speaker 6: little tea. He's a little update on my own personal
- 10:56Speaker 6: saga story. So last night I'm thinking I'm getting smart.
- 11:00Speaker 6: I'm like, all right, forget these plots. They're king on
- 11:03Speaker 6: the acorns. I'm going to go do that thing I
- 11:05Speaker 6: just told you right, which is I'm going to punch
- 11:06Speaker 6: into this transition area next to bedding where there should
- 11:09Speaker 6: be acorns. I gonna hunt that spot. So I did
- 11:11Speaker 6: that last night. Well, I get a update on my
- 11:16Speaker 6: cell phone camera overnight like this.
- 11:19Speaker 5: This would be when would have been.
- 11:22Speaker 3: They went on like twenty four hour update.
- 11:24Speaker 5: You do it so it sends right now.
- 11:27Speaker 6: This one sends at nine to fifteen at night, so
- 11:29Speaker 6: I get sent after dark, and then I get one
- 11:31Speaker 6: cent at like four fifteen in the morning. I have
- 11:35Speaker 6: it set on twice, but it's both overnight. I'm not
- 11:37Speaker 6: sure why.
- 11:40Speaker 3: That's got kind of a random spread there.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Well, I take that back. That's how it is. The
- 11:45Speaker 5: reason I get the two is that they're different cameras.
- 11:48Speaker 6: So I've got some cameras and give me an update
- 11:50Speaker 6: at nine fifteen and some cameras give me an update
- 11:52Speaker 6: at four fifty.
- 11:53Speaker 5: That's why this is.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Not because those are both good spotlighting times of the
- 11:56Speaker 2: day I didn't want.
- 12:01Speaker 6: But what I'm trying to get at here is last
- 12:03Speaker 6: night and laying in bed, and I get the pictures
- 12:06Speaker 6: that showed like everything that happened over the last twenty
- 12:08Speaker 6: four hours. And what showed you is that while I
- 12:11Speaker 6: was sitting in the acorns one hundred and ninety yards away,
- 12:14Speaker 6: the Y nine was on my green food plot on
- 12:17Speaker 6: the other side of the bedding area in daylight.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Hey yeah, that's cool, and I'm not This is actually
- 12:25Speaker 2: not me making fun of you.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Are you saying green or grain? When you say that
- 12:30Speaker 3: green green? Okay? Gotcha to attune.
- 12:34Speaker 6: To those little small and those those green plots have
- 12:37Speaker 6: grains in them.
- 12:39Speaker 5: As well as other things.
- 12:40Speaker 6: So so the plots that I have been observing or
- 12:43Speaker 6: have cameras on have been blends. All of my action
- 12:48Speaker 6: in the back forty and the other spots of hunt
- 12:50Speaker 6: have got some oats, some wheat, some clover, some brassicas,
- 12:54Speaker 6: stuff like that.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I hunted brassicas on actually on a piece of public
- 12:59Speaker 2: you know, one of those things that the state plants
- 13:03Speaker 2: a couple of days ago.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Mark.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I mean, I know said of eight is like a
- 13:06Speaker 2: better ratio than fourteen of sixteen. But I'm on fourteen
- 13:10Speaker 2: of sixteen right now. So you know, I too, have
- 13:12Speaker 2: done a large amount of hunting. I don't know if
- 13:14Speaker 2: it means.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Anything to you know, but that's pretty good.
- 13:17Speaker 3: See, I'm tired, tell you the truth of the matter.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Glad to be home. But you know, I uh hunted
- 13:23Speaker 3: a just prince strictly brassica plaud It was.
- 13:26Speaker 2: It looked like purple tops and icycle radish or dicon
- 13:29Speaker 2: whatever you want to call them, and the deer were
- 13:32Speaker 2: hammering those things. So that's why I was interested to
- 13:34Speaker 2: hear that you were seeing, you know, a little bit
- 13:38Speaker 2: of lack of movement on that stuff. But I was
- 13:40Speaker 2: in an area that has no oak trees to speak of,
- 13:43Speaker 2: So I wonder if that has a lot to do
- 13:45Speaker 2: with that.
- 13:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it. I think it probably does.
- 13:49Speaker 6: But there's you know, like so many things, there's always
- 13:51Speaker 6: exceptions to the rule, and these things change so fast.
- 13:55Speaker 6: You know, as soon as I say acorns, they go
- 13:57Speaker 6: to green, and then I'll be saying, let's go to green,
- 14:00Speaker 6: and then they'll be on a corner who knows what.
- 14:02Speaker 6: So you know, that's part of the fun of it,
- 14:05Speaker 6: right as you make the best guess, the best prediction
- 14:08Speaker 6: you can, but they keep you guessing.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 4: So the you mentioned that that bucket showed up with
- 14:14Speaker 4: like a minute left in light the other day. Yeah,
- 14:17Speaker 4: you said cruising. Did you mean like rut cruising or
- 14:21Speaker 4: just just walking around getting ready to go somewhere to feed.
- 14:25Speaker 6: Yes, sorry, not rut cruising. He was just like moving
- 14:29Speaker 6: on a mission. He was not feeding around. He was
- 14:32Speaker 6: just on a steady gate, walking along the timber edge
- 14:35Speaker 6: and actually was walking along the edge of the switch
- 14:38Speaker 6: grass and the timber and then went into the timber
- 14:42Speaker 6: and had no interest in the food plot that was
- 14:45Speaker 6: just ten yards away from him.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Got you okay, So things can change pretty quickly. Right now.
- 14:51Speaker 4: We've seen a lot of guys that are starting to
- 14:53Speaker 4: find some success. Right now, we've had a lot of
- 14:55Speaker 4: a lot of the country that's been in coal fronts
- 14:57Speaker 4: and that kind of thing. And every day right now,
- 15:01Speaker 4: the days are getting shorter. You are a pretty smart guy.
- 15:07Speaker 4: And uh, you mentioned something to me that made me
- 15:11Speaker 4: feel really idiotic the other day.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Can you can you speak to that a little bit?
- 15:18Speaker 5: I didn't mean. I wasn't planning on publicly shaming you know.
- 15:21Speaker 3: I need it. I need it. It's the only way
- 15:22Speaker 3: to stay humble. Mark.
- 15:24Speaker 6: Well, I've been I listened to every week of the
- 15:27Speaker 6: Rough Radio podcast because this thing's great.
- 15:29Speaker 5: I thoroughly enjoy the updates.
- 15:31Speaker 6: And a couple of different weeks I heard you talking,
- 15:34Speaker 6: you know, the guys.
- 15:35Speaker 5: And Dick, So you know, is the moon impacting things?
- 15:38Speaker 5: Is the weather impacting things? Is the diurnal period impacting things?
- 15:41Speaker 6: And like I heard that the first time, and I
- 15:43Speaker 6: just thought, oh, he must have misspoke, And then I
- 15:45Speaker 6: heard again last week. I'm like, I think Tyler is
- 15:48Speaker 6: confusing diurnal with photo period. Yeah, and and so I
- 15:54Speaker 6: texted you to ask if that was the case, and
- 15:56Speaker 6: you're like, oh, yep, So what I think you been
- 16:00Speaker 6: referring to is photo period, which is the amount of
- 16:04Speaker 6: day in a twenty four hour period. And the photo
- 16:07Speaker 6: period is basically the thing that is tied to the
- 16:12Speaker 6: changes into stosterone levels and deer which changes at a
- 16:16Speaker 6: consistent rate throughout the year every year at the same time,
- 16:19Speaker 6: because that change in daylight is the same every year
- 16:22Speaker 6: throughout the year, and so that is what leads to
- 16:26Speaker 6: a generally consistent timing of peak breeding in most deer hears,
- 16:31Speaker 6: like outside of those funky places down south.
- 16:34Speaker 5: So so that's what photo period is, and that's I
- 16:37Speaker 5: know what you were referring to.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Yeah, let's say, allegedly at the end of all that alleged.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Mark, it's funny, you love you love your constants, and
- 16:50Speaker 2: it's good as a deer hunter too, keen on that stuff.
- 16:53Speaker 2: But it is those little weird things like that that
- 16:55Speaker 2: just make you go, hmmm, what if photo period does
- 16:59Speaker 2: mean that much? Like, why are they they're these little
- 17:02Speaker 2: side trips or whatever. But that's what makes it fun,
- 17:05Speaker 2: because these things are not predictable. Ye, you know, you
- 17:07Speaker 2: just cannot just figure them out.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Yes, that is the truth. Yeah, you had a.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Question, They're toole. I was just gonna I was just
- 17:15Speaker 4: gonna say, if you knew what the diurnal period was.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Well, I don't think diurnal period is a thing, Tyler.
- 17:21Speaker 5: I think you made that up.
- 17:22Speaker 3: No, it's not.
- 17:23Speaker 6: Because diurnal diurnal nocturnal animals or animals that are most
- 17:28Speaker 6: active at nights. Diurnal describes an animal that's most active
- 17:32Speaker 6: during the day.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Yes, and crepusculary is in the middle. Is that right?
- 17:37Speaker 6: Crepuscular would be most active at the edges. So crepuscular
- 17:41Speaker 6: would be animals like white tails that have peak peak
- 17:45Speaker 6: activity periods at the edges of daylight.
- 17:49Speaker 4: So, uh, diurnal. There's a diurnal cycle, yes, yes, do
- 17:55Speaker 4: you know what it is?
- 17:57Speaker 6: I think it's the fact that like a diurnal cycle
- 18:00Speaker 6: would be something that happens like on a daily basis,
- 18:02Speaker 6: like a twenty four hour type cycle.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Look at you, you're smart. You're a smart guy. I'm
- 18:07Speaker 4: glad to know you.
- 18:08Speaker 6: Manly, I'm gonna take these acclades and I can get them.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Yeah, Hey, I give them to you. Man.
- 18:18Speaker 4: We we're glad to have you back on, man, and
- 18:21Speaker 4: to just kind of share your story, and we're sure
- 18:24Speaker 4: gonna have you on several more times as much as
- 18:26Speaker 4: we can. Things get really busy from this point on
- 18:28Speaker 4: for all deer hunters and for you and us as well,
- 18:32Speaker 4: So we'll try to try to make sure we stay
- 18:35Speaker 4: in touch on this stuff and get updates from you
- 18:37Speaker 4: from the field and that kind of thing going forward.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Yeah, Man, Can I give you a prediction?
- 18:42Speaker 3: I would love that.
- 18:43Speaker 5: Yeah, all right.
- 18:45Speaker 6: So I'm gonna say over the next seven days, at
- 18:51Speaker 6: least in the areas that I've been looking at in forecast,
- 18:54Speaker 6: we've got pretty consistent weather pattern. It's kind of stagnating
- 18:57Speaker 6: now for the next two weeks at least, is what
- 18:59Speaker 6: I've seen in my neck.
- 19:01Speaker 5: Of the woods. So we had that really hot weather.
- 19:03Speaker 6: We got that first big cold run. I think we
- 19:05Speaker 6: had a rush of activity. A lot of people killed
- 19:08Speaker 6: deer over the last three or four days. I think
- 19:10Speaker 6: it's gonna stagnate a little bit with that weather. It's
- 19:13Speaker 6: not gonna be bad, but we're not gonna get this
- 19:15Speaker 6: huge burst of new deer activity. I think what we're
- 19:18Speaker 6: gonna see is a steady increase right as photo period
- 19:22Speaker 6: would tell us, as that testosterone testosterone level rises over
- 19:26Speaker 6: the next week, we're going to continue seeing a little.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Bit more activity, a little more activity.
- 19:30Speaker 6: As those bucks are slowly edging towards getting that pre
- 19:34Speaker 6: rut action going.
- 19:35Speaker 5: So with that being.
- 19:38Speaker 6: The case, I'm gonna give you a standard Midwest six
- 19:41Speaker 6: because let's go.
- 19:45Speaker 5: I think it's gonna be I think it's gonna be decent.
- 19:48Speaker 5: I think it's gonna be decent.
- 19:49Speaker 6: I wouldn't expect things to be banging yet, but I
- 19:51Speaker 6: think it'll be decent.
- 19:52Speaker 5: And if you're on a deer you certainly have an opportunity.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Man, y'all are on your way to be in Canada. Man,
- 20:03Speaker 4: that's a that's a good prediction for sure. I'd probably
- 20:06Speaker 4: agree with you, you know, like the same. I've seen
- 20:09Speaker 4: our trail cameras. They're on forty eight hour updates, but
- 20:14Speaker 4: you know, just to one up you there. But they
- 20:18Speaker 4: they have shown a lot of increased movement in the
- 20:22Speaker 4: last few days. But then I hunted last night locally
- 20:29Speaker 4: and we saw hogs and that was it. What we
- 20:33Speaker 4: saw a couple of those briefly, but it was pretty
- 20:36Speaker 4: much just that. And then I my forty eight hour
- 20:40Speaker 4: period ended this morning, so I saw my trail cameras
- 20:43Speaker 4: this morning that there was no there was like no
- 20:46Speaker 4: deer movement overnight or this morning in daylight at all,
- 20:50Speaker 4: which was weird because the last few days I've had
- 20:53Speaker 4: I've had day move or deer movement over the last
- 20:55Speaker 4: few days quite like an increased amount and or about
- 20:59Speaker 4: the same but more daylight, you know. So anyway, it's
- 21:03Speaker 4: just I think you're spot on with that prediction that
- 21:06Speaker 4: things are starting to level out and become the new norm,
- 21:10Speaker 4: and we need something different.
- 21:13Speaker 3: To happen, I think, yep. So, but with this cold.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Front, you know, we had a lot of deer die
- 21:19Speaker 4: across the country and a lot of hunters that were
- 21:22Speaker 4: experiencing really good movement. So we're gonna, we're gonna, you know,
- 21:27Speaker 4: get a few of those guys on the phone right
- 21:28Speaker 4: now and chat with them and see if they have
- 21:32Speaker 4: the same prediction.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Tyler. Who we got this week, Well, this week.
- 21:35Speaker 4: We've got several guys from different places in the US.
- 21:38Speaker 4: We've got Aaron war brittin there in Iowa. He's been
- 21:40Speaker 4: doing some hunting with some of his buddies that do
- 21:43Speaker 4: the hunting public stuff. We got Clay Nukelem in Arkansas,
- 21:47Speaker 4: Arkansas with a W at the end, Dakota Long he's
- 21:51Speaker 4: in Texas. He's a good friend of ours. And another
- 21:53Speaker 4: good friend of ours Drew Robbins down in Alabama. These
- 21:57Speaker 4: guys are gonna give us reports that are gonna hopefully
- 22:00Speaker 4: tin anywhere you're at in the US except maybe the northeast.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Maybe we'll hook you up next next week with that one.
- 22:06Speaker 4: Now on the phone, have got Aaron war Britain from
- 22:08Speaker 4: the hunting public, and you've been up in the Midwest
- 22:10Speaker 4: hunting all over the place Iowa, namely, how's that been
- 22:14Speaker 4: looking lately?
- 22:15Speaker 3: Man? Real good?
- 22:17Speaker 5: Since this cold front.
- 22:19Speaker 10: We've had a little a little bit different scenario this year,
- 22:22Speaker 10: which is not uncommon. You know, each year is a
- 22:25Speaker 10: little bit different, I feel like, and you always have
- 22:28Speaker 10: got to hunt situations based on whatever conditions you.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Have in the given moment. But this time.
- 22:35Speaker 10: Around, we were very very dry going into the season,
- 22:39Speaker 10: so hardly any water. All the intermittent creeks are dry.
- 22:43Speaker 10: The only places that deer could get water because I
- 22:47Speaker 10: mean it's been you know, almost months without any sizeable rain.
- 22:51Speaker 10: It's been pons er or permanent water like creeks or rivers,
- 22:57Speaker 10: but all the intermittent streams are dry. And what we noticed,
- 23:01Speaker 10: I mean, all the vegetation is dry, even there's not
- 23:03Speaker 10: much moisture in it. And at this point in the year,
- 23:06Speaker 10: the crops have dried down. Also, deer are living real,
- 23:11Speaker 10: real close to permanent water. That's been the big key
- 23:15Speaker 10: that we found, you know, even hunting in that real,
- 23:19Speaker 10: real hot weather during the first week of season, it
- 23:22Speaker 10: was like ninety degrees and then it fell off and
- 23:25Speaker 10: you know, dropped to thirty degrees in that recent cold front.
- 23:28Speaker 10: And since that cold front, the buck sign is just
- 23:33Speaker 10: ramped way up, Like there lots of fresh rubs, lots
- 23:38Speaker 10: and lots of fresh scrapes since that cold front came around.
- 23:41Speaker 2: So we were just driving home from South Dakola this
- 23:44Speaker 2: past weekend and there's a lot of harvest happened, which
- 23:47Speaker 2: seems early to me. How has that drought affected the
- 23:51Speaker 2: crops And do you think they're pulling stuff out earlier
- 23:53Speaker 2: than normal?
- 23:55Speaker 10: I think they are, but that's probably just based on
- 23:58Speaker 10: the lack of rainfall and the yields this year are
- 24:03Speaker 10: poor in a lot of areas from the drought. But yeah,
- 24:07Speaker 10: we're seeing the same thing. Crops are coming out for
- 24:11Speaker 10: whatever reason. Though we've seen decent acorn crop. You know,
- 24:17Speaker 10: it depends on.
- 24:17Speaker 3: The area that you're at.
- 24:18Speaker 10: I was at one area the other day and there
- 24:21Speaker 10: was gobs and gobs of white oak and red oak
- 24:23Speaker 10: acorns on the ground and deer were smoking them. And
- 24:25Speaker 10: then I went thirty minutes down the road and there
- 24:29Speaker 10: was very few acorns and you know, a swath of
- 24:32Speaker 10: timber that we worked through, so it's it's hit or miss,
- 24:36Speaker 10: but there's definitely on acorns and that's where we've been
- 24:40Speaker 10: finding lots of bucks sign and lots of first straps
- 24:43Speaker 10: and stuff. Hadn't seen a lot of scraping activity until
- 24:46Speaker 10: this recent front, but been really really ramped up. Had
- 24:51Speaker 10: a nice buck come by working scrapes just two nights ago.
- 24:54Speaker 4: So would you like, if you're looking into the next week,
- 24:58Speaker 4: would you suggest checking scrapes out, maybe hanging cameras over them,
- 25:03Speaker 4: or even hunting them on an afternoon that you get off.
- 25:06Speaker 5: Oh for sure.
- 25:07Speaker 10: I love hunting scrapes, especially during bo season, just because
- 25:11Speaker 10: it puts a deer on a spot you can set
- 25:13Speaker 10: up well with the you know, down wind of the scrape.
- 25:17Speaker 10: In a lot of situations, you can wait for the
- 25:19Speaker 10: deer to get there. You can, you know, it gives
- 25:22Speaker 10: you a really good high odds chance at killing a deer.
- 25:26Speaker 10: You can put yourself within twenty yards of them. You
- 25:28Speaker 10: can wait for the deer to get there and start
- 25:30Speaker 10: working the scrapes. You can come to full draw and
- 25:32Speaker 10: then wait for your opportunity. They don't work every time, obviously.
- 25:36Speaker 10: If you're just walking along the edge of a nag
- 25:38Speaker 10: field and you're finding ten to fifteen fresh scrapes there,
- 25:40Speaker 10: that's pretty good ways from any sort of secure bedding area.
- 25:44Speaker 10: I wouldn't fool with those. I'd put cameras over those.
- 25:47Speaker 10: But if you're finding scrapes back in the timber, you know,
- 25:50Speaker 10: on a secluded oak flat or something like that, especially
- 25:54Speaker 10: close to permanent water this year, I would be looking
- 25:58Speaker 10: at that pretty hard here in the next few days.
- 26:01Speaker 4: If if you see a if you see a storm
- 26:04Speaker 4: come through and you're in one of those dry areas
- 26:06Speaker 4: right now, that that the deer using that water heavily,
- 26:10Speaker 4: does that knock them off those water patterns? You feel like,
- 26:13Speaker 4: are you more apt to go back to scrapes where
- 26:15Speaker 4: they might be freshening stuff up or or what do
- 26:17Speaker 4: you think?
- 26:19Speaker 5: A jury's still out on that one.
- 26:21Speaker 10: I don't know. I'm kind of waiting for that to
- 26:22Speaker 10: happen and see. Yeah, because like I said at the
- 26:25Speaker 10: at the beginning, every year is a little bit different.
- 26:29Speaker 10: And I think just because it's been so dry for
- 26:31Speaker 10: so long right now, there's very little like succulent greed
- 26:36Speaker 10: and food sources other than natural brows because that stuff,
- 26:40Speaker 10: that stuff's got deep roots and it pulls moisture from from.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Lower than a lot of you know.
- 26:46Speaker 10: Grasses or even food plot crops. So I don't know,
- 26:52Speaker 10: I mean, everything is just so so dry that we've
- 26:56Speaker 10: noticed that that's where all the deer are concentrated at
- 27:01Speaker 10: is anywhere close to permanent water. And and when we're
- 27:06Speaker 10: close to permanent water, we're finding a lot of scrapes
- 27:08Speaker 10: and rubs because that's where that's obviously where the bucks are.
- 27:11Speaker 10: I mean, we target those areas on a year when
- 27:13Speaker 10: it's not dry, just because big bucks often will put
- 27:18Speaker 10: themselves in a spot real close to permanent water.
- 27:20Speaker 5: As far as your betting area choice, will go.
- 27:23Speaker 10: But that's especially evident this year when it's really really
- 27:28Speaker 10: dry and they can't because there's there's the moisture content
- 27:31Speaker 10: in the brows that they're eating.
- 27:32Speaker 5: Right now is so low that they've they've.
- 27:36Speaker 10: Got to have some sort of permanent water source close by.
- 27:39Speaker 3: I mean, we sat upon the other day that was.
- 27:41Speaker 10: Real close to a parking lot on public land that
- 27:44Speaker 10: gets pounded, and I think Ted saw eight or nine deer.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Man, that sounds like a good hunt early in the season.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Dude, I'm glad they already on that hard if you
- 27:52Speaker 2: were looking forward to the next week, I need you,
- 27:56Speaker 2: if you would, to rank what you expect the buck
- 27:59Speaker 2: movement to be like on a scale of one to ten.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Oh, man, I don't know.
- 28:03Speaker 5: Depends on where you're at.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Well, Southern, I will give me that one. That's what
- 28:07Speaker 3: I need to know.
- 28:08Speaker 10: Well, it even depends on where you're at in the woods.
- 28:12Speaker 10: You know your situation, how tight are you to the betty?
- 28:15Speaker 10: But I would say overall, it's going to be pretty good.
- 28:18Speaker 10: I would if I had my choice, I'd be hunting
- 28:21Speaker 10: cold fronts in October over any other time.
- 28:24Speaker 3: M hm.
- 28:24Speaker 10: So I would say seven or eight, especially if we
- 28:27Speaker 10: get a really good front here later part.
- 28:30Speaker 5: Of this week.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Man, that's a pretty exciting time. Man.
- 28:33Speaker 2: That's seven or eight in southern I was about as
- 28:35Speaker 2: good as it gets. So that's a good time to
- 28:38Speaker 2: get out there. And I'm sure y'all will. Dude, I
- 28:40Speaker 2: appreciate the report. Thanks, no problem.
- 28:43Speaker 5: Man.
- 28:45Speaker 2: On the phone, I have got meeters on Arkansas's native son,
- 28:49Speaker 2: Clay Newcombe.
- 28:50Speaker 3: How are you today, sir?
- 28:52Speaker 7: I'm doing great, Casey, doing just great.
- 28:55Speaker 2: That's good man. Well, I know you've been doing a
- 28:57Speaker 2: little light til hunting. In fact, we were talking mid
- 29:01Speaker 2: hunt this past week. We were both giving each other
- 29:03Speaker 2: some you know, a little bit of encouragement, and I
- 29:08Speaker 2: wanted to see how that went for you.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Man. How has the hunting been there in Arkansas?
- 29:12Speaker 8: Man, I have got a fresh load of not great
- 29:17Speaker 8: news from the white tailed nukem world down here.
- 29:21Speaker 7: I have.
- 29:24Speaker 8: I've not had a real great season so far, just man,
- 29:30Speaker 8: hadn't been seeing hadn't been finding much buck sign, hadn't
- 29:35Speaker 8: been getting pictures of any deer, which usually I am
- 29:38Speaker 8: this time of year, getting pictures of deer over feed,
- 29:41Speaker 8: sometimes getting pictures of deer over mock scrapes and different stuff,
- 29:45Speaker 8: and I don't really understand.
- 29:47Speaker 7: It completely, but I have not.
- 29:52Speaker 8: I actually didn't even hunt much this last weekend because
- 29:56Speaker 8: I just was.
- 29:57Speaker 7: A little just kind of waiting.
- 29:59Speaker 8: You know, I've got your spots that I don't want
- 30:02Speaker 8: to bombard too much until I'm pretty confident that there's
- 30:06Speaker 8: a deer there that I want to kill.
- 30:07Speaker 7: I can kill him.
- 30:08Speaker 8: And so I spent this last weekend, which was an
- 30:11Speaker 8: incredible cold front, you know, October's first cold front. I
- 30:16Speaker 8: know a lot of guys here that killed good deer
- 30:19Speaker 8: this weekend, but I was not one of them.
- 30:22Speaker 2: So yeah, that's it's it's tough, but you know, I
- 30:25Speaker 2: understand that the patient game is is good. You and
- 30:28Speaker 2: I were talking about some bear hunting you've been doing
- 30:30Speaker 2: up there, and you were targeting acron ridges. Do you
- 30:33Speaker 2: think that the acorns are having an impact on the
- 30:37Speaker 2: white tails where you're at as well?
- 30:39Speaker 8: Well, that's that's part of the deal is I've not
- 30:42Speaker 8: really found I've yet to really find big concentrations of acorns,
- 30:48Speaker 8: and usually that's the that's the bear story.
- 30:50Speaker 7: If you can find the acres, you can find the bears.
- 30:52Speaker 8: But I think some of the acorns are holding a
- 30:57Speaker 8: little longer than they usually do. They're not falling. But
- 31:00Speaker 8: also there are just not as many here in the
- 31:03Speaker 8: places where I'm at. I've not found a lot of acres.
- 31:06Speaker 4: We're kind of seeing the same thing clay down here
- 31:09Speaker 4: where we're at in East Texas. Now, as far as
- 31:13Speaker 4: you know, the playing the slow game and being conservative,
- 31:16Speaker 4: are you are you waiting on something in particular? Are
- 31:20Speaker 4: you waiting on just stuff to show up on trail camera?
- 31:23Speaker 3: Are you work well on conditions or what?
- 31:25Speaker 8: Okay, So the specifics of my situation this year is
- 31:29Speaker 8: I lost a farm that a big farm for me
- 31:34Speaker 8: that I've had access to for twenty years, which has
- 31:37Speaker 8: kind of locally allowed me. I didn't realize how good
- 31:42Speaker 8: I had it until it was gone, and I so
- 31:47Speaker 8: I lost like ninety percent of my hunting ground, and
- 31:51Speaker 8: I'd relied on it so much that I just didn't
- 31:56Speaker 8: have a lot of other stuff up now. I and
- 32:02Speaker 8: also because I had this private I have not invested
- 32:05Speaker 8: a ton in local public land hunting.
- 32:10Speaker 7: Okay, it's complicated.
- 32:12Speaker 8: Story, boys, and so, but the ten percent of the
- 32:18Speaker 8: remaining private permissions that I have are small properties. So
- 32:23Speaker 8: basically I woke up to this year and it's like
- 32:26Speaker 8: I have a couple of very small properties that I'm
- 32:30Speaker 8: hunting that I have had to be conservative, had to
- 32:35Speaker 8: be conservative in because they're so small, if that answers
- 32:38Speaker 8: your question, Tyler. Yeah, so, and there's just not there's
- 32:43Speaker 8: one good deer that I've got on camera in nothing fancy,
- 32:47Speaker 8: I mean like one hundred and twenty five inches a year, probably,
- 32:50Speaker 8: which I would I would hunt him like a Boon
- 32:52Speaker 8: and Crockett and I will, but I have just not
- 32:56Speaker 8: really got him on pattern. I've got him on camera
- 32:58Speaker 8: two or three times, random, no pattern. And it's a
- 33:02Speaker 8: small property. So it's not like I can go, well,
- 33:05Speaker 8: I know where he's bedding, or I'm going to go
- 33:07Speaker 8: over on this ridge and see if I can find
- 33:08Speaker 8: him over there. It's kind of like he's either on
- 33:11Speaker 8: my place or he's not.
- 33:13Speaker 3: You know.
- 33:14Speaker 8: Well, And so that's why I found myself being conservative.
- 33:17Speaker 7: But losing the losing the public.
- 33:20Speaker 8: Has pushed me back to kind of my roots of
- 33:23Speaker 8: local hunting, which is I did go on some public land.
- 33:29Speaker 7: It's a long story.
- 33:30Speaker 8: I do hunt public land every year in Arkansas, a
- 33:33Speaker 8: long ways from my house.
- 33:35Speaker 7: Yeah, okay, that's all I'll say. I travel and hunt public.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say any public U hunts way away
- 33:41Speaker 2: from my house too.
- 33:42Speaker 3: It's the way.
- 33:43Speaker 2: It's definitely the thing to say, you know nowhere near
- 33:46Speaker 2: you home.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, So exactly looking.
- 33:49Speaker 2: At the weather, we we you know, the moon's kind
- 33:51Speaker 2: of going away. It's gonna be kind of low. I
- 33:53Speaker 2: don't know if you think about that much. But we
- 33:55Speaker 2: have fairly monotonous weather coming up for like even the
- 33:59Speaker 2: tea forecast. There's a little bit of a front I
- 34:02Speaker 2: think this weekend, but it's you know, we're looking at
- 34:06Speaker 2: a real similar stretch of days through here.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Well, that being said, and thinking about.
- 34:12Speaker 2: The acron situation and what you have to hunt, what
- 34:14Speaker 2: do you think the buck movement's going to be like
- 34:16Speaker 2: on a scale of one to ten over the next week.
- 34:20Speaker 7: Probably like a five.
- 34:24Speaker 8: I mean, I don't I think that the middle of
- 34:28Speaker 8: October for where I'm at has never been great. It
- 34:33Speaker 8: feels like to me, you know, after about the twentieth
- 34:38Speaker 8: of October.
- 34:38Speaker 7: Anything could happen. I mean, you could.
- 34:40Speaker 8: Have a buck on a dough that is you know,
- 34:45Speaker 8: I mean a dough in heat. It's it seems like
- 34:49Speaker 8: you know that that that and that causes bucks to
- 34:54Speaker 8: be moving around a lot more.
- 34:55Speaker 7: To me, the twentieth of October here.
- 34:57Speaker 8: In northwest Arkansas is time to start getting serious and
- 35:02Speaker 8: to start being less conservative in terms of like, now's
- 35:05Speaker 8: the time to hunt your good stuff the next ten days.
- 35:09Speaker 8: I mean, I'll hunt anytime that I get a chance,
- 35:13Speaker 8: and anything could happen. I was just talking to some
- 35:16Speaker 8: guys today that last may not have been last year,
- 35:19Speaker 8: maybe been two years ago, but on October the fourteenth,
- 35:22Speaker 8: they saw a giant buck locked down on a dough.
- 35:26Speaker 8: I mean, like, straight up, she was in heat, he was.
- 35:30Speaker 8: I mean, you'd have thought it was November the fourth
- 35:32Speaker 8: how about that? And that was on October fourteenth.
- 35:36Speaker 7: And I think it feels like in this part of
- 35:39Speaker 7: the world we're.
- 35:39Speaker 8: Seeing kind of these longer ruts. I don't know if
- 35:42Speaker 8: that's anecdotal and not real, but it feels like anything
- 35:50Speaker 8: could happen a little sooner. But I don't anticipate. If
- 35:53Speaker 8: I was waiting for days to take off, I wouldn't
- 35:56Speaker 8: take off.
- 35:57Speaker 7: Gotchafter the twentieth of October.
- 36:00Speaker 2: The quality information we need there, Sir Clay Nukem of
- 36:03Speaker 2: Arkansas Buck Truck Fame, where we hunted together down in
- 36:07Speaker 2: Arkansas and play on the public ground.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Clay.
- 36:09Speaker 2: We appreciate the insights, sir, and uh, I'm sure we'll
- 36:14Speaker 2: be talking to you soon. Can't wait to see how
- 36:15Speaker 2: your season unfolds.
- 36:17Speaker 8: Well, I've been enjoying seeing how y'all's has unfolded, and
- 36:21Speaker 8: it's been good.
- 36:22Speaker 7: So good job to y'all.
- 36:39Speaker 2: On the phone, I got to the Dakota along with
- 36:41Speaker 2: Cotton Creek Outdoors.
- 36:43Speaker 3: He's been doing some hunting down in Texas. What's up, dude,
- 36:47Speaker 3: Hey k C.
- 36:48Speaker 5: Thanks for having me on.
- 36:49Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you're welcome. Man.
- 36:50Speaker 2: You know, actually, from where we sit, you're up in
- 36:52Speaker 2: Texas because you're a little further north than US's not
- 36:54Speaker 2: a whole lot, but I think that the general public
- 36:56Speaker 2: doesn't realize how big the country of Texas is a
- 37:00Speaker 2: monster place. Uh, it's almost like we're neighbors and we're
- 37:02Speaker 2: three hours apart. So, dude, I was scrolling socially the
- 37:06Speaker 2: other day and I saw a big giant buck and
- 37:09Speaker 2: I saw a big old smile from you right behind him.
- 37:11Speaker 3: The other day. You shoot shot you a big one, dude, Yes, sir.
- 37:15Speaker 6: Yeah he was.
- 37:15Speaker 5: He was a really cool buck.
- 37:16Speaker 11: As my biggest deer to date and it was, uh,
- 37:19Speaker 11: it was pretty I made a batch you out on him,
- 37:21Speaker 11: but hey, that's part of bow hunting sometimes.
- 37:23Speaker 5: We we we recovered him though.
- 37:25Speaker 2: That's great, man, I'm glad you got him. So, uh,
- 37:28Speaker 2: what tactic were you using hunting that deer?
- 37:31Speaker 11: So, uh, you know, we're we're hunting over like gravity
- 37:34Speaker 11: fed protein fears out that way, so it's more of
- 37:37Speaker 11: a feed feeding situation on on our side.
- 37:40Speaker 5: And then but the deer hadn't been hitting it as much.
- 37:44Speaker 11: Everything's kind of starting to change, as you guys probably
- 37:46Speaker 11: have seen with cameras and that kind of stuff. It's
- 37:49Speaker 11: they're they're going to the woods that I've seen or uh,
- 37:52Speaker 11: they're been hitting locust trees a lot, eating those those beans,
- 37:56Speaker 11: and they've just been inconsistent on fears. Uh, the bachelor
- 38:00Speaker 11: groups are really starting to break up. From what I
- 38:02Speaker 11: can tell, they're not you'll still see bucks together, they're
- 38:05Speaker 11: not really fighting. Some of the young bucks are are
- 38:08Speaker 11: kind of sparring, but it's there. They're really not consistent
- 38:12Speaker 11: on the feed anymore, at least the mature deer aren't.
- 38:15Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 38:15Speaker 4: So I actually saw a truck and pictured this morning
- 38:18Speaker 4: of a deer eating a locust bean pod, which is interesting.
- 38:20Speaker 4: You mentioned that do you guys have live oaks out
- 38:23Speaker 4: there where you're at.
- 38:25Speaker 7: Yeah, there's a few.
- 38:26Speaker 5: It's there's not a whole bunch, but there is.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Some, Yes, sir, do they are they dropping? And are
- 38:31Speaker 3: you seeing any deer hitting them?
- 38:33Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 38:33Speaker 5: So the ones we've seen.
- 38:35Speaker 11: Actually, the night I killed my buck, there was some
- 38:37Speaker 11: younger deer that actually went over to uh. I guess
- 38:42Speaker 11: it was a live oak, but it was kind of
- 38:43Speaker 11: a low hanging one, and he stood up on his
- 38:45Speaker 11: back feet and was shaking those limbs and getting that
- 38:47Speaker 11: those acrons to fall the hand.
- 38:50Speaker 5: They're still over there for.
- 38:51Speaker 11: Fifteen or twenty minutes before they ever came over and
- 38:54Speaker 11: to the feeder.
- 38:56Speaker 4: What are the chances that he's browsing leaves off that
- 38:58Speaker 4: thing too?
- 38:59Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, there's a very good chance of it.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:02Speaker 11: And at first I thought he was making a scrape,
- 39:04Speaker 11: and I was like, no, he's not making a scrape.
- 39:05Speaker 7: He's shaking that tree and getting acrons off of it.
- 39:08Speaker 4: Would you say that there are more deer that are
- 39:10Speaker 4: eating off those acre trees, off those live oaks, or
- 39:15Speaker 4: or around them, or there's more deer that are coming
- 39:18Speaker 4: to protein feeders.
- 39:21Speaker 11: So I think it's it's a little mixture of both
- 39:23Speaker 11: because it's a like every third day, those mature deer
- 39:27Speaker 11: will come back to the feeders, but they're they're staying
- 39:30Speaker 11: in the timber.
- 39:30Speaker 10: I mean, they don't have to go anywhere.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Mm hmm. Yeah. Has the cool front affected the deer movement?
- 39:36Speaker 11: Yes, yes, I've seen a lot more doze on cameras,
- 39:39Speaker 11: and they're really I don't I don't think they're they're
- 39:42Speaker 11: packing up quite yet, but they're they're not as consistent
- 39:45Speaker 11: as they were on their like summer feeding patterns.
- 39:47Speaker 5: That's for sure.
- 39:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:49Speaker 2: So if you were looking forward, you know, the the
- 39:52Speaker 2: weather for textas at least where we're at, is really
- 39:54Speaker 2: monotone for like the next ten days. Is that what
- 39:57Speaker 2: you're kind of seeing as well? Or do y'all have
- 39:59Speaker 2: some fronts going out there further west?
- 40:01Speaker 11: Yeah, we got one front coming in I think like
- 40:05Speaker 11: Friday night is what it's looking like, and then by
- 40:08Speaker 11: Monday it's gonna be kind of back up in the eighties.
- 40:10Speaker 11: So I think it's gonna be maybe a couple.
- 40:13Speaker 5: Of good days of some some bucks.
- 40:15Speaker 11: Like hitting you know, a food source or there. It's
- 40:18Speaker 11: gonna uh and then I think it's gonna kind of
- 40:20Speaker 11: just mellow out and you're gonna be kind of seeing
- 40:22Speaker 11: the same younger deer for a few days and those
- 40:25Speaker 11: when it warms back up. I feel like those those
- 40:27Speaker 11: big bucks they'll kind of, you know, stay stagnant for
- 40:30Speaker 11: a little bit.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:31Speaker 2: So with that loom in, I suppose you got kind
- 40:34Speaker 2: of like a little bit of a window there looking
- 40:36Speaker 2: at the next week. If you had to rank what
- 40:38Speaker 2: you thought buck movement would be like on a scale
- 40:40Speaker 2: of one to ten, what would you say it is
- 40:43Speaker 2: for Texas for the next week.
- 40:46Speaker 5: I would I would give it a seven.
- 40:47Speaker 1: I don't think.
- 40:48Speaker 5: I think.
- 40:48Speaker 11: I think you're gonna still see some some big some
- 40:50Speaker 11: big bucks moving and a lot of younger bucks moving
- 40:53Speaker 11: for sure.
- 40:54Speaker 2: How about that, man, that's a good that makes me
- 40:56Speaker 2: want to go get in the woods right now. This
- 40:57Speaker 2: is well not right now, but this weekend. You say that,
- 41:00Speaker 2: that sounds a right all right to me.
- 41:02Speaker 3: I feel like we're.
- 41:03Speaker 11: Going to get you know, in the it's looking in
- 41:05Speaker 11: the upper forties and the in the like Friday night,
- 41:07Speaker 11: I think so, I think that Saturday is really going
- 41:10Speaker 11: to get their the deer on their feet and then
- 41:12Speaker 11: it'll kind of back off, you know as the beginning
- 41:14Speaker 11: of next week starts. But I feel like it's really
- 41:16Speaker 11: really going to give him a good push, I hope.
- 41:17Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Man, Well, thanks, report really appreciate it and hope you
- 41:20Speaker 2: have a good rest of the season.
- 41:21Speaker 5: Dude, you bet I appreciate y'all.
- 41:24Speaker 2: I got our friend Drew Robbins. He's been hunting in Alabama.
- 41:27Speaker 2: What's going on, dude.
- 41:29Speaker 9: Man, Not much, brother, just trying to take advantage of
- 41:32Speaker 9: this cold weather.
- 41:34Speaker 5: It's cool weather that just.
- 41:35Speaker 9: Moved in, and so we're excited about that and so
- 41:39Speaker 9: hoping to get out a couple more times in the
- 41:41Speaker 9: next couple of weeks and try to get something else
- 41:44Speaker 9: down on the ground that's cool.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Man.
- 41:45Speaker 2: So you know, we are Southern Brethren, and around here
- 41:48Speaker 2: we call them cool fronts because it ain't really cold yet.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Do you say that where we're at too, well, we
- 41:54Speaker 2: we call them cold fronts.
- 41:57Speaker 9: And so, but I mean, you know, y'all, are you
- 42:00Speaker 9: know Texas Brethren over there?
- 42:01Speaker 5: You know, eighty from ninety to eighty.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Five is a cool look at it, you know.
- 42:08Speaker 2: So have you all been out getting after de youer
- 42:10Speaker 2: pretty good already.
- 42:12Speaker 9: Yeah, Yeah, we've been out and uh it's been keenan
- 42:15Speaker 9: on some uh you know, just just the traditional early
- 42:19Speaker 9: season uh you know, acrons and uh we we had
- 42:23Speaker 9: a really wet summer and so in our neck of
- 42:27Speaker 9: the woods, it seems like we have a really good,
- 42:29Speaker 9: uh bumper crop of acorns this year. And so that's
- 42:33Speaker 9: what we've been keenan and on. Guys that I know
- 42:36Speaker 9: have been keenan on is is that stuff right there?
- 42:39Speaker 4: So do you guys have like that kind of traditional
- 42:43Speaker 4: American white oak or using You've seen a lot of
- 42:46Speaker 4: different stuff dropping in your area.
- 42:49Speaker 9: Normally it's the white oaks that are that are early season,
- 42:52Speaker 9: and then once you get a little bit later, uh
- 42:55Speaker 9: you know, the red oaks will start dropping. And so
- 42:59Speaker 9: but that's that's were mostly key on is wide oak.
- 43:02Speaker 9: But that's also because we have death majority of the
- 43:05Speaker 9: oaks around here.
- 43:06Speaker 3: Is that So are they deer using them right now?
- 43:09Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 43:09Speaker 3: Yeah, you're seeing that?
- 43:11Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, So it's it's it's one of those things.
- 43:14Speaker 9: It's a double edged sword in the sense of if
- 43:17Speaker 9: you can find the one that they are about, then man,
- 43:20Speaker 9: you have a really good chance of at least seeing
- 43:24Speaker 9: there but also harvesting. But also since we had such
- 43:27Speaker 9: a wet summer, like I said, they don't have to
- 43:29Speaker 9: travel very far, and.
- 43:31Speaker 5: So we have We have quite a few of the.
- 43:34Speaker 9: Of the oaks up in our area, and so maybe
- 43:36Speaker 9: in South Alabama and in South Georgia might not be
- 43:39Speaker 9: as much, but we have a lot of oaks up
- 43:41Speaker 9: here and so so they don't have to travel as much,
- 43:45Speaker 9: which makes it a little bit more difficult. But like
- 43:47Speaker 9: I said, if you can find that one and you're
- 43:49Speaker 9: you're in the chips.
- 43:50Speaker 4: So we were talking to Mark Kenyon earlier and he
- 43:52Speaker 4: said that the acorns are affecting the movement they're seeing
- 43:55Speaker 4: on like food plots and stuff. Have you noticed any
- 43:57Speaker 4: of that? Are you seeing less moving on food plots?
- 44:00Speaker 4: So they still hitting the green fields and stuff like that.
- 44:02Speaker 5: Yeah, they're they're they're hitting the green fields just a
- 44:05Speaker 5: little bit.
- 44:07Speaker 9: I actually set over at Greenfield opening day or opening afternoon,
- 44:11Speaker 9: i should say, and I killed a dough but it's
- 44:15Speaker 9: not near as.
- 44:16Speaker 5: What it was as compared to last year.
- 44:18Speaker 9: Just for example, I got a couple of cameras on
- 44:21Speaker 9: some food plots that that I lease and have permission on,
- 44:24Speaker 9: and then we were getting slamm last year with with thoughs,
- 44:28Speaker 9: and this year it's not nearly as much.
- 44:29Speaker 5: And so because they're they're on the milk's hard right now.
- 44:32Speaker 2: So being down in the southern part of the US,
- 44:36Speaker 2: you have a later rud I'm assuming, uh, at least
- 44:38Speaker 2: in party estate. Does that mean that the technical early
- 44:43Speaker 2: season patterns last longer as well?
- 44:47Speaker 5: Correct?
- 44:47Speaker 9: Yeah, we we're seeing down here, and I mean, you know,
- 44:51Speaker 9: the the early season pattern could last into you know, uh,
- 44:56Speaker 9: first of November. But it's also unique here because we
- 45:02Speaker 9: also have rud activity around that time as well.
- 45:04Speaker 11: And so.
- 45:06Speaker 9: But really, once you get that first real good frost
- 45:10Speaker 9: I'm talking about, like real good one, that's kind of
- 45:12Speaker 9: when and at least what I've seen, the early season
- 45:15Speaker 9: patterns really start to dissipate and then they start to
- 45:18Speaker 9: they start to spar a little bit and start to
- 45:20Speaker 9: kind of fill their oat some. And so we had
- 45:22Speaker 9: a nice cool front move in this past weekend and
- 45:27Speaker 9: dropped it down and it was in the low forties.
- 45:29Speaker 5: But traditionally it'll get back hot again or.
- 45:33Speaker 9: Warmer, and then we'll have another real good one in
- 45:37Speaker 9: the first of November. And if that's when we really
- 45:40Speaker 9: see them start to break up and really start to
- 45:43Speaker 9: spar a little bit and lay down a lot more.
- 45:46Speaker 9: Buck sign is when we get that first good frost.
- 45:48Speaker 3: Gotcha.
- 45:49Speaker 4: So in the next week, thinking about variables that can
- 45:52Speaker 4: deal with weather or the photo period, or maybe even
- 45:57Speaker 4: food sources changing or whatever it might be, maybe the moon,
- 46:01Speaker 4: what do you predict the buck movement to be like
- 46:05Speaker 4: on a scale of one to ten in the next
- 46:07Speaker 4: week or.
- 46:07Speaker 9: So, one to ten, I would probably say a five,
- 46:12Speaker 9: just uh yeah, just.
- 46:13Speaker 5: Middle middle there there the road just coming.
- 46:15Speaker 9: Off a what I would call probably like a seven,
- 46:18Speaker 9: you know, of the past week that it's gonna warm
- 46:22Speaker 9: up some also it's it's it's weird because the reason
- 46:26Speaker 9: they're also not hitting food plots is a lot of
- 46:28Speaker 9: guys don't have food plots down in the ground yet
- 46:30Speaker 9: because we haven't had a whole lot of rain once
- 46:32Speaker 9: the calendar hit September, so we got a ton during
- 46:34Speaker 9: the summer, and then once it hit uh you know,
- 46:39Speaker 9: uh September, which I know for some of the southern
- 46:41Speaker 9: states that's the openers.
- 46:43Speaker 5: We didn't we didn't get a whole lot of rain
- 46:45Speaker 5: here in Alabama.
- 46:45Speaker 9: So that's another reason we're not seeing a whole lot
- 46:47Speaker 9: of activity on on Greenfield. So I would say, man,
- 46:51Speaker 9: uh just to average five, you know, just average hunh week, gotcha.
- 46:55Speaker 4: Well, thanks for the report man. I look forward to
- 46:57Speaker 4: seeing what you put down on the ground this year.
- 46:59Speaker 4: And uh hope we'll be talking to you soon.
- 47:02Speaker 5: Thanks fellas, say you.
- 47:04Speaker 2: After listening to these guys, I am pumped to go
- 47:07Speaker 2: deer hunting.
- 47:08Speaker 10: Man.
- 47:08Speaker 2: It's here, guys, power, it is dad. Come to your season.
- 47:12Speaker 2: As we like to say around here. You can get
- 47:14Speaker 2: out there and chase around with a boat back here
- 47:16Speaker 2: anywhere in the country now. So it's an exciting time
- 47:19Speaker 2: to be one hundred's exciting time, a good time to
- 47:21Speaker 2: be live. There's a great country and Western song by
- 47:25Speaker 2: Travis Tripp that had a lot to do with that
- 47:26Speaker 2: at one point in time. It might be what we
- 47:29Speaker 2: need to listen to in a way to stand next time.
- 47:31Speaker 2: If you need to feel inspired and you've done listen
- 47:35Speaker 2: to Travis, but you want to maybe watch something, you
- 47:40Speaker 2: need to go check out the latest and greatest episode
- 47:42Speaker 2: of Buck Truck.
- 47:42Speaker 3: It's from Texas, a very own home state.
- 47:45Speaker 2: There was a Texas report here and Mark Kenyon, who
- 47:49Speaker 2: also was in the intro today was on that hunt
- 47:53Speaker 2: as well. Mark elects to make a decision on a
- 47:58Speaker 2: buck in that video.
- 48:00Speaker 3: You need to go watch it and see if it
- 48:01Speaker 3: was the right or wrong decision. Let us know what
- 48:03Speaker 3: you think on that.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Also, the last episode of One Week in November should
- 48:09Speaker 2: be live on the Meat Eater channel as well, so
- 48:12Speaker 2: go check that out if you haven't. And that's what
- 48:17Speaker 2: I know, guys. It's rout fresh. It is time to
- 48:20Speaker 2: get out and hunt some deer. This has been rut fresh,
- 48:24Speaker 2: Keep it fresh.
