- 0:00Speaker 1: Sugarhouse Distillery, Utah's original Utah grain and a glass distillery. Today,
- 0:05we're proud to announce the new addition to the sugar
- 0:07House family, just in time for the holiday season, the
- 0:10release of Sugarhouse Distillers Bottled in Bond blue Corn Bourbon.
- 0:15It's a new premium release featuring heirloom blue corn grown
- 0:18at the foot of the Sleeping Ute Mountain on the
- 0:21Ute reservations. Can't get more Utah than.
- 0:23Speaker 2: That drink field better drinks the field all right.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Here he is the benevolent despot of the Wine Academy
- 0:36of Utah. Jimmy Santangelo Wine Academy of Utah dot Com.
- 0:41Speaker 4: Good morning, mister Santangra.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Good morning Bill. You're at home. We got this delicious
- 0:45bourbon in here. Yeah, it's medicine.
- 0:52Speaker 3: You don't know how sad I am.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Well, maybe we'll have to do uh a delivery for
- 0:58you so you can taste it some. All right, thank you,
- 1:00We'll figure it out.
- 1:01Speaker 4: So this is this is James Fowler's latest.
- 1:04Speaker 5: Huh yeah, man, this Sugarhouse Distillery, the Suburban Bottled in Bond.
- 1:10Speaker 2: So a couple things about bottled and bond. You are
- 1:13at a hunter.
- 1:14Speaker 5: Proof, So fifty alcohol by volume, all right, you have
- 1:18to it's from a single batch, from a single housing.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Of barrels in the distillery.
- 1:25Speaker 5: They can't move them around and things like that, and
- 1:28then you can only harvest them if you will, in
- 1:31the spring or the fall of a few years later.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So very specific and specific.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Why are they so specific?
- 1:38Speaker 5: So it happened after prohibition in nineteen thirty three to
- 1:41allow for the quality of whiskeyes, because during bootlegging and
- 1:48the time during prohibition you had some just rock gut
- 1:53kind of stuff that lack of quality bathtubs.
- 1:57Speaker 3: And they'd make that bathtub gin and then they'd put
- 2:01coloring in it to make it look like bourbon and
- 2:03sell it as bourbon.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Yeah, all kinds of things. So, yeah, you're exactly right.
- 2:07Speaker 5: So bottle and bond was a terminology, a technique, and
- 2:11then it went out of favor as quality improved.
- 2:16Speaker 2: But then they're kind of coming back with it.
- 2:19Speaker 5: This is the cool part about this whiskey, the sugarhouse
- 2:22new bourbon whiskey.
- 2:24Speaker 2: This is.
- 2:26Speaker 5: This is cool stuff. Utah corn, the ute corn, blue
- 2:31corn from the base of the foot of the Ute
- 2:35Mountains in southwest Colorado. The reservation that whole area and
- 2:42wheat from here. So a true grained glass. We've all
- 2:47heard farmed the table in culinary. This is grained the glass.
- 2:53Not a lot of distilleries in the country can claim that,
- 2:56and our friends here at sugar House are certainly doing that.
- 3:01Speaker 1: This is a great holiday gift. Like here's there's an idea.
- 3:04Speaker 6: If you have somebody from Utah that's moved away, you
- 3:08want to give them a Utah.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I'm thinking of moving Gina.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So you can get the present.
- 3:18Speaker 5: So this is a sneak peek. This is available. I
- 3:22got this at the distillery.
- 3:23Speaker 2: This is a sneak peak. It's going on sale to
- 3:28the public Friday the thirteenth next week next Friday, and
- 3:34at the distillery distillery at the distillery.
- 3:37Speaker 5: And it's a limited release. This is I've been tasting
- 3:42this stuff out of barrel for a couple of years
- 3:45and I remember when James tasted me on it and
- 3:48it had this like real almost red clay like thing
- 3:52coming out of it, just this earthiness of a of
- 3:55a whiskey, of this corn whiskey. And then I'm just
- 3:58assessing it. Now it's proofy, it's proofy. It's got a
- 4:02lot of because it's the hundred proof fifty.
- 4:07Speaker 7: It's powerful.
- 4:08Speaker 4: You know, I don't I don't mess with anything under
- 4:10a hundred proof.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Wild surgery.
- 4:13Speaker 3: But but you so you say you were sampling in
- 4:17the barrel. What does he give you a straw or
- 4:20something when you show up?
- 4:21Speaker 5: So what you do it's called there's yeah, it's a
- 4:24do higgye, it's a thief. It's a long it's called
- 4:27the copper dog in Scotland. Or you have just this
- 4:32long pipe bette. You might have remembered that in Latin
- 4:36when in chemistry class the labs at pipett where it's
- 4:41a long glass tube and you put your you and
- 4:45you asserted into liquid and then you put your thumb
- 4:48over the.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Top, trapping in that liquid.
- 4:51Speaker 5: You pull it out and then you pipett it out
- 4:53into glasses or otherwise. So and that's real typical to
- 4:58be able to do. Or as some distilleries love to do,
- 5:01they get their drill and they'll just drill in the
- 5:04side of a barrel and his stream a whiskey comes
- 5:08out and you got to catch it. You got to
- 5:10catch it here and then.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Walk up, take a little wood plug and then tap
- 5:16it in with a with a rubber mallet.
- 5:18Speaker 4: You you drilling and then you show me where to
- 5:20lay down.
- 5:20Speaker 7: That's right in the gut cartoon.
- 5:26Speaker 2: But this is spicy. This has got some great flavor.
- 5:30Speaker 5: You got a little bit of that cinnamon spice that's
- 5:32from the wood coming out. But you got this nice
- 5:34warm mouthfeel. I think with a drop or two of water,
- 5:38I think.
- 5:38Speaker 7: That what I was thinking.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Yeah, you're a little bit of ice, and you'll have
- 5:44more of that cinnamon and spice in the in the
- 5:48in the butterscotch, in the in the clothiness will come
- 5:51out for sure.
- 5:52Speaker 4: So that's a sugarhouse distillery and they're located there in.
- 5:56Speaker 2: South Salt Lake.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Yeah, yep.
- 5:58Speaker 5: And you can get this as well as their canned
- 6:01products and any of their products right there at their
- 6:04package store.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Field better.
- 6:09Speaker 3: The field, all right. The head barbarian of the Wine
- 6:14Academy of Utah, he's Jimmy Santangelo. He runs things there
- 6:19at the Wine Academy of Utah.
- 6:20Speaker 4: With an iron fist.
- 6:21Speaker 2: That's right.
- 6:22Speaker 4: That's uh. So we're talking. We're going to talk eggnog here.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I had an event last night.
- 6:29Speaker 5: We were making wreaths up at the Red Butte Gardens
- 6:32uh for their Mount John. Yeah, it was a sticky situation,
- 6:36I gotta tell you a little. But I was serving
- 6:39some wines and I wanted to feature some egg nog.
- 6:43And this is an old New England nag. It is
- 6:48from the Walker Facility out of Boston. I've walked through
- 6:54this facility with my father in law, Dennis, and it
- 6:57was so fun to see. These guys have been making
- 7:00booze since before Prohibition. They really got popular during Prohibition,
- 7:04but that's another story and have been doing great uh,
- 7:10importing and producing product ever since. They have a beautiful
- 7:13wine portfolio. This is just something that's real traditional now.
- 7:16What is Eggnogget is a dairy based, dairy based product.
- 7:19It is pasteurized so it's shelf stable and you want
- 7:23to refrigerate it after opening. And this has this beautiful
- 7:27cinnamon throughout spice all your your clove, just think all
- 7:32your your Christmas spice.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Christmas.
- 7:36Speaker 5: It is clearly creamy, it's full bodied, it's got a
- 7:40big mouth feel.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Alcohol fifteen percent alcohol by vine. What is the alcohol.
- 7:45It's blended with three different spirits.
- 7:48Speaker 5: You have rum, Kentucky whiskey, and Konnac that's what I'm.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Getting classic, right, It's just classic.
- 8:00Speaker 4: O good.
- 8:00Speaker 5: And my wife Joonie, she loves this in a ice latte.
- 8:06She doesn't drink iced coffee. But when this comes out
- 8:09so Christmas morning, what I do. We do a pot
- 8:11of coffee and then.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I'll shake up when they hear it shake and it's
- 8:16like tradition. They know all the little and everybody gets one.
- 8:20You know, everybody gets it. So it's a lot of fun.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Not in coffee.
- 8:24Speaker 2: How else do you drink it cold?
- 8:26Speaker 5: Some I was talking with Gal last night. She likes
- 8:28this lowly simmered and warm. She prefers it really warm.
- 8:33I've never had it warm, and but this is an
- 8:37iced You just set it over a couple of rocks
- 8:40ice cubes and you are good to go.
- 8:44Speaker 7: For me, i'd have a shot glass.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Is what.
- 8:48Speaker 2: A shot at the time?
- 8:49Speaker 4: Too much?
- 8:51Speaker 1: I have a little milk frother hot coffee.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I like that.
- 8:58Speaker 4: I do that, you know.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I have a big milk frother and I might do
- 9:02that at my place and I have a big one.
- 9:04Speaker 7: I'll tell you Bill, you're not here in the studio,
- 9:06But Genea is really taking a shine to this.
- 9:08Speaker 4: What you're talking about but nog, So why is it
- 9:12called nog? Well, I just nobody knows. Io I looked
- 9:16it up.
- 9:18Speaker 3: So according to the Old English or the Oxford English Dictionary,
- 9:21nog was a kind of beer brewed in East Anglia
- 9:24a long time ago. The first known use of the
- 9:27word nog was in sixteen ninety three. But alternatively, and
- 9:31I think this is probably right, nog stems from the
- 9:34word noggin, which is a Middle English term for a
- 9:37small carved wooden mug used to serve alcoholic beverages in.
- 9:43So it was the noggin that the little little.
- 9:46Speaker 1: The egg part. There's no egg in this right now.
- 9:49Speaker 2: They don't use the word egg, so perhaps there's no egg.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Oh, it just says no.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Traditional eggnog does have egg cream.
- 9:58Speaker 7: Well, and we tried making one year one year and uh,
- 10:03it just didn't quite work out.
- 10:05Speaker 1: What the professionals doing.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Old New England the local store.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Do you have any questions?
- 10:12Speaker 7: We do have some questions here, let's see Sarah here,
- 10:15My dad used to make hot totties when he was sick.
- 10:18He died before I could get his recipe. Do you
- 10:20have any good recipe for hot?
- 10:21Speaker 5: So hot totties are typically whiskey based, uh, hot water
- 10:26and a little bit of honey. So what I recommend
- 10:30is breaking your honey down first, breaking it down by
- 10:33dissolving it so it's not a glumpy at the bottom,
- 10:37breaking it down with hot water before you put it
- 10:39into then this hot totty. But that whiskey, hot water,
- 10:46and sweet. I prefer honey as the sweet.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Put a little put Gina's husband's recipe it calls for
- 10:54lemon juice and cardamom both and I it's that's how
- 11:00I did it. I made one earlier this week.
- 11:02Speaker 6: I know I was saying I wish I was sick
- 11:05so I could have one, and then dawned on me
- 11:07I could just have a hot dot.
- 11:11Speaker 7: I don't know if you'll be able to answer this
- 11:12or not, Jimmy, although you I am confident that you
- 11:16can answer just about any question, but try this one.
- 11:19Austin texting and good morning. My question is I've been
- 11:24invited to a Harry Potter themed Christmas party. I don't drink,
- 11:29but I've been assigned to bring an adult butter beer.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Any ideas, Yeah, so there is a local distillery.
- 11:38Speaker 2: What the heck is it?
- 11:40Speaker 5: It might be from Ogden's own or another one.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Yeah, they've got.
- 11:46Speaker 5: A liqueur that would compliment like a liquor, an alcoholic
- 11:52beverage that would compliment this with root beer, like you know,
- 11:56or the butter beer, right, and then with what makes
- 11:59So you've been to Disney and had the butter beer,
- 12:03you haven't, so you can go right up to the
- 12:05bar and they give you these big old things.
- 12:07Speaker 2: So the kids get the butter beer glasses.
- 12:10Speaker 5: We still have them the mugs at the house, and
- 12:13they got their butter beer, but they also have adult.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Butter beer. I forget the spirit.
- 12:20Speaker 5: That was in it, but I do remember when having it,
- 12:23I'm like, I wish this was rum because it's got
- 12:27the rum root beer. But then what's gonna make it frothy?
- 12:31Just a little scoop, think of like a root beer float.
- 12:35Speaker 4: That's all.
- 12:35Speaker 5: You gotta start thinking about much ice cream, But you
- 12:38know that's what's going to give you that idea.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I just I just googled butter beer and there
- 12:44are three recipes that pop right up. If you want
- 12:46to make butter.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Beer, there you go to.
- 12:48Speaker 1: But those aren't alcoholic alcohol.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Any one of them you could put alcohol and.
- 12:55Speaker 7: Put some rum in it or something like that. Here's
- 12:57a text. I want to try scotch, but I don't
- 13:00know anything about it or what to try first.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Scotch can be scary.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Stay away, Stay away.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I work your way up to scotch.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's so funny, I always hear.
- 13:13Speaker 5: So try a blended scotch. Just Monkey Shoulder is a
- 13:17delicious one to start with. That is actually a blend
- 13:20of single malt scotch is blended together.
- 13:22Speaker 4: That's kind of sweet even almost, Yeah it is.
- 13:25Speaker 2: And you have scotches are softer, you're going to have
- 13:29more of the grain. Like when you're like, I don't
- 13:31know what I'm tasting, that's the grain. That's the grain.
- 13:34Speaker 5: Here in America we love our New American oak, so
- 13:39that those vanolins are going to kind of overwhelm the
- 13:42grainy profile, although our grains punched through. But in Scotland
- 13:47for scotch, and even now you're shiskey, they're using barrels
- 13:52that had already been used once before, so you're not
- 13:55going to get as much of that, you know, barrel
- 13:58of fact impact act covering up those flavors.
- 14:02Speaker 2: So it's very grainy. But I would recommend monkey shoulder
- 14:05all day.
- 14:05Speaker 7: Yeah, and finally this question is a fuzzy navel, A
- 14:09good beginner drink for extra religious people. I would say
- 14:13it is the beginner honestly.
- 14:16Speaker 5: No, absolutely, you know that sweet style peach what is
- 14:20that peach knops? And uh yeah, that reminds I just
- 14:24got brought back to Florida spring break like eighty nine
- 14:28that one.
- 14:29Speaker 7: Now here's a quick butter beer recipe, all right. One
- 14:32leader of cream soda, two to three teaspoons of butter,
- 14:38two to three teaspoons of brown sugar, one cup of
- 14:41heavy whipping cream, and four to five worthers originals. I
- 14:45don't know what you put it where there's originals, but
- 14:50they kind of a butter said you could put butterscotch
- 14:53schnapps in.
- 14:55Speaker 5: Oh that's what I would do instead of the wars
- 14:57because you're never going to break those down, ye album. Well,
- 15:01thanks guys, and you know what, I'm super excited about
- 15:04Scotland coming up July June twenty. First, we already have
- 15:07two folks joining us. It's a trip for fourteen people.
- 15:11Kim dastrip our yoga meditative instructor me on the stick
- 15:15for all Scotch needing things. It's gonna be a great trip,
- 15:19So go to the Wine Academy viwtah dot Comfermence.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Right, you know, Gina said that you gotta you work
- 15:26your way, You work your way up to Scotch.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:29Speaker 3: I worked my way up to Scotch and then I
- 15:31worked my way back down again.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Ah
