Transcript
- 0:00All right, hour number two, welcome back Miller and Condon.
- 0:02It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:04Wherever you are, wherever you're listening or however
- 0:06you're listening, whether it's on Des Moines sports station one
- 0:09O 6.3, KXNONE, the statewide affiliates or anywhere on the
- 0:13iheart app. We're grateful that you are here
- 0:15as we will talk with you until just before 2:00.
- 0:18At that time off the bench, Lucas and Sean still to come
- 0:22this hour, Bill Seals recaps Iowa State's weekend.
- 0:24But right now, as the music kind of indicates, we're going to
- 0:27talk some baseball with our guy, Matt Snyder.
- 0:30CBSSports.com. CBSSports.com for Matt Snyder.
- 0:34Trent and I both we we had a little bet between ourselves
- 0:36whether Mendoza would be fired or not.
- 0:38By the time you came on the air with us at 1:00, I was wrong.
- 0:42I thought he'd be out the door. I'm kind of shocked he hasn't
- 0:45been. What are they waiting for in New
- 0:47York with the Mets? It seems like Stearns really,
- 0:52really wants to keep them. But like, at some point the
- 0:56owner is going to go to to Stearns and say, yeah, I mean,
- 1:00one of you got to go. So if you're not going to fire
- 1:03us, you're gone. So yeah, I mean, 9 and 19.
- 1:08And remember, we've already gone over this.
- 1:10We just keep going over it. But they they had that collapse
- 1:14last season. They were the best record in
- 1:16baseball through June 12th. And then they completely fell
- 1:18apart and missed the playoffs. And it wasn't like somebody got
- 1:22really, really hot and rained them down.
- 1:24They only the Reds only 183 games and made the playoffs
- 1:27because the Mets just completely choked you team that choke job
- 1:31last year with this bad start this year.
- 1:34Yeah. I mean, we talked about how last
- 1:38week there was an upcoming soft schedule.
- 1:42They win the two games against the Twins.
- 1:43Sorry, Trent. It's right after they get Juan
- 1:47Soto back. So you might think, OK, we just
- 1:50needed Soto back. Now the single snowball, we'll
- 1:52get back in it. And then they get swept at home
- 1:54by the Rockies. Yeah.
- 1:56I mean right now I don't understand why it hasn't
- 1:59happened yet today. It's a baffling decision
- 2:02overall, and I understand one. Soto was gone basically for half
- 2:05the season. To this point he's been gone.
- 2:07Think he's played in 13 of the 28 games.
- 2:09Still, this offense is anemic and you look up and down the
- 2:13lineup, the veterans, the guys that you thought at minimum are
- 2:16going to be OK a month into the season, Bichette, Simi, Lindor,
- 2:20absolutely. I mean, these are guys that
- 2:22you're are the bedrocks of your team and they've been terrible
- 2:25across the board. I didn't love their pitching
- 2:28coming to the year. That was my question.
- 2:29I thought they can swing it. Is there a batting coach that's
- 2:32going to get the axe? I mean, is that a direction you
- 2:34go? If you're not going to fire the
- 2:36manager, you got to do something.
- 2:38That that's the main key is what you just said.
- 2:41Do something like, it just seems like they're just sitting there
- 2:44waiting it out and they're acting like they're just going
- 2:46to turn things around. And when you get slipped at home
- 2:49by the Rockies, it doesn't look like anything's going to turn
- 2:51around anytime soon without something drastic.
- 2:53And we've seen cases where talented teams change managers
- 2:58and all of a sudden, like look at the Phillies in 2022, they
- 3:01fired Joe Girardi and then they got hot under Rob Thompson and
- 3:04they ended up in the World Series.
- 3:05And they've been one of the better teams of baseball up
- 3:08until this year. After that move, sometimes just
- 3:12changing the voice can do something or I don't know if
- 3:16there's a mentality to, hey, it got real.
- 3:19Our manager got fired. We really better step step it
- 3:22up. I don't.
- 3:22There might be something subconsciously in there, but
- 3:26yeah, I I just, it's funny, especially with the Red Sox not
- 3:30just firing Alex Cora, but completely cleaning houses,
- 3:32turning out their entire coaching staff.
- 3:34And then you look at the contrast of the Mets not doing
- 3:37anything and you're just wondering what in the world is
- 3:40going on here. I I just keep coming.
- 3:42There has to be something going on in the clubhouse and I'm not
- 3:45saying Pete Alonzo, he's out of a player.
- 3:47He's off the greatest of starts in Baltimore, at least power
- 3:50wise. If he would have still been
- 3:52there with the Mets, be in this spot, do you think was he maybe
- 3:55the solidifying force amongst those veterans?
- 3:58I don't know. I don't call him closely there.
- 4:00Was a lot of talk about, yeah, there was a lot of talk about
- 4:02both Alonzo and Edwin Diaz being big clubhouse guys, being get
- 4:06big guys in the clubhouse. It's hard to tell.
- 4:10I do think you can't just do something as simple as look at
- 4:15Alonzo's numbers. He wouldn't even be helping them
- 4:17right now because there's something to be said for
- 4:19continuity and being comfortable.
- 4:21And so many times when guys have a new home, they struggle at the
- 4:24start of the year that the biggest, easiest example is
- 4:26Albert Kuhl with the Angels. When I first signed with them,
- 4:29he was broken for six weeks. It's there's something to be
- 4:32said for continuity and I just feel like they're offseason
- 4:36moves. Moving Jorge Polanco to first
- 4:39base and trying him instead of Alonso, That's a bad move.
- 4:43You signed Beau Bichette and you move him to third base.
- 4:45Again, there's something to be said for continuity.
- 4:47Not only is Bichette on a new team, but he's also learning a
- 4:50new position that's obviously going to affect his hitting.
- 4:53So I just felt like a lot of the moves were misguided.
- 4:57If you can, you can sign Bichette, but bring Alonzo back.
- 5:00You can trade for Freddy Peralta, but as long as you have
- 5:03Alonzo back and then you don't need to trade Brandon Demo for
- 5:06obviously Washed Up Marcus Simeon and that was another move
- 5:08that is just not working out at all.
- 5:11Let's go to the top of the division and Atlanta.
- 5:14We know they're good. We know they're talented.
- 5:15They've just been hurt the last couple of years.
- 5:17Are they built in a way that they can compete in the seven
- 5:19game and LCS against the Dodgers?
- 5:21It feels like that is going to be a tall trash.
- 5:23Assuming the Dodgers are going to get.
- 5:25There, I absolutely. Yeah.
- 5:26I think that's fine. I am in your last year, Ken.
- 5:28I am not playing this game with you this summer.
- 5:30The Dodgers are going to be there.
- 5:32I know. If it gets there, does Atlanta
- 5:34have the firepower to compete in a 7 gamer?
- 5:39Offensively, absolutely. Bullpen, absolutely.
- 5:42The bullpen's amazing. Once they get Iglesias back to
- 5:44team with Robert Suarez and then Dylan Lee and Tyler Kinley.
- 5:48The rotation is the question, right?
- 5:50Like, you know, Chris Dale, we know about Chris Dale.
- 5:52Spencer Strider's going to come back.
- 5:54What's he going to look like when he gets back?
- 5:56I'm not convinced Martine Perez is going to have a 2.7 OERAL
- 6:00year. Definitely not going to see
- 6:02Bryce Elder with a 1.95 BRA all year.
- 6:05So how's the rotation going to look by the time you get to the
- 6:08play? If you get the best version of
- 6:11Spencer Strider and you still have the best version of Chris
- 6:13Dale, who's that third guy going to be?
- 6:16You can probably stand toe to toe with the Dodgers as long as
- 6:19you have 3 starters and can kind of patchwork or bullpen game for
- 6:22the 4th spot. But yeah, we'll we'll see on
- 6:26that rotation. But yeah, they've got everything
- 6:28else. It's just how is that rotation
- 6:30going to shake out behind Dale? Cubs and Dodgers played A3 game
- 6:33set. The Cubs came from behind to win
- 6:35on Friday night. Then it was all downhill after
- 6:37that 12, four and six zip on on Sunday.
- 6:41Did you learn more about LA Kind of knew they were good, right?
- 6:44Or just this is this is how difficult it's going to be the
- 6:47Cubs for them to climb to the very top of of the leagues.
- 6:51What did you learn, if anything? What we saw Saturday was the
- 6:55Cubs pitching injuries, finally just catching up to them.
- 6:58I mean, when there's so many guys hurt right now, the bullpen
- 7:01is stand out. They're running names out that
- 7:03maybe you guys from Iowa will recognize, but a lot of people
- 7:06don't recognize when Colin Ray started to get hit a little bit.
- 7:11It's a reminder that yes, he can be helpful, but he's there's a
- 7:15reason he's a swing man. He's not a full time rotation
- 7:17guy. And then you had to go into the
- 7:19underbelly of the bullpen, what's left of it.
- 7:22And and that's you get what happens there.
- 7:24Yesterday was one of the weirdest things I've ever seen
- 7:27in my entire life. For team to go over 20 with
- 7:30runners on base with having any guys on base.
- 7:34Holy cow, Friday was amazing, really fun to watch, great
- 7:38comeback by the Cubs. I wanted to say we necessarily
- 7:42learned a lot about either team other than just it was 2 good
- 7:45teams going at it and the Cubs pitching staff is just
- 7:48completely decimated by injuries.
- 7:50And that caught up with him on Saturday and Sunday was one of
- 7:53those games where they just, they had hit so well during that
- 7:57winning streak. I guess it was kind of expected
- 7:59that at some point they would just forget how to hit for a
- 8:01game. It happens.
- 8:03So you mentioned that I saw a list that also included the
- 8:05minor leaguers that are currently on the shelf.
- 8:07It was like 30 names long. I mean, it's just, it's
- 8:10ridiculous. It is.
- 8:11I mean, it's I've never, I don't think I've ever seen.
- 8:13And we've talked about teams like the Astros.
- 8:16We've seen the Dodgers with a ton of pitching injuries, but
- 8:20I'm just, I'm trying not to be the fan here.
- 8:23I'm trying to be the analyst, but it's difficult to say.
- 8:26You have two good starters with major injuries in Kate Horton
- 8:30and Justin Steele, and then and from the 40 man roster alone, 8
- 8:36relievers on the IL And yeah, if you go to Iowa, there's four
- 8:41starters. Good grief, man, it's just the
- 8:45entire organization. Have you taken a peek ahead of
- 8:49some starting pitching, good starting pitching that's going
- 8:51to be yeah, you can get available, you mean?
- 8:53Yeah, when we get to the trade deadline is there.
- 8:55Deadline. Yeah.
- 8:56Is there any names out there that you know, either pending
- 8:59free agent, something like that that likely is going to be moved
- 9:02come July? Well, I don't think the Tigers
- 9:05are going to fall out of it, but if they did, Eric School would
- 9:07be the big one. But I wonder if now is going to
- 9:11be the time that did Marlins pull the trigger on Sandy L
- 9:14Contra. It looks like they're probably
- 9:16going to fall out of the race. He's been really good.
- 9:19He's already thrown one of his shutouts.
- 9:21You know, he's the guy that's going to go the distance.
- 9:26He's probably the main one that jumps out to me.
- 9:29But I mean, gosh, if you see like the the Mets go completely
- 9:35out of it and start Wheeling, dealing Freddy Peralta.
- 9:37There's a reason the Brewers, Freddy Peralta, he's a free
- 9:39agent at the end of the year. And if the Phillies decide they
- 9:44need to make drastic changes, how's Zach Wheeler going to look
- 9:48here? He's only one start in when he
- 9:49comes coming back from that surgery that he could be.
- 9:52That could be an interesting one.
- 9:55Noah's not tradable right now, but maybe he pitches back into
- 9:59to the form to where the sub team might take a flyer on him.
- 10:03Different, different type teams that look really terrible this
- 10:06year. Like we haven't talked about the
- 10:08Mets with the Phillies being big time scholars.
- 10:09And while the Red Sox are 11 and 17, Crochet is not going
- 10:14anywhere. But if if Sonny Gray got
- 10:16healthy, Brian Baio, maybe the Astros, I don't know who they
- 10:22would even have because their pitching stats have been
- 10:24atrocious. But seeing the Astros be this
- 10:26bad, it makes you think maybe they'll be sellers.
- 10:29Robbie Ray is a free agent at the end of the year.
- 10:31And of course, up in Minnesota, there's.
- 10:33Yeah. Joe Ryan, and he's got another
- 10:35year got to go. Yes, absolutely.
- 10:37He does have another year that he is under contract.
- 10:39So maybe a little bit more value for the Twins as the rebuild
- 10:42continues. Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:43How about, how about this one too?
- 10:46Jose Soriano? What a start.
- 10:48Don't seem like they're going to compete for another couple of
- 10:52years if they decide to sell. He's under team control through
- 10:572028. They could get a lot killing a
- 11:02ton right now the way he looks. Yeah, throw in Mike Trott if
- 11:05you're going to a contender as well.
- 11:08I'd like to get him there. You know what I mean?
- 11:10Cincinnati 18 and 10. Why don't ask about Sal Stewart,
- 11:14who's a really nice player? Is he?
- 11:17He's the favorite right now to win Rookie of the year in the
- 11:19National League by stairs is AD is is ADH.
- 11:23His numbers offensively I think are going to be, if not as good,
- 11:28I I think potentially better than Stewart's.
- 11:30But Stewart's an everyday player for the most part.
- 11:32Does that put him over the top? So far, yes.
- 11:36I mean, the Cubs are really protecting by a stereos from
- 11:39lefty. So he's basically a platoon DH
- 11:42there. I think you got to let him see
- 11:43lefties at some point, see what you've got.
- 11:46But at this point, yeah. And it's still with the more
- 11:49power as well by service has started to hit a few bombs.
- 11:53There were with 9 homers and 29 RBI.
- 11:55Right now, 29 RBI and 28 games. A ridiculous start, but like by
- 12:00the stereos. His average is what, 397?
- 12:03Only 400? Yeah.
- 12:05Yeah, OK. I mean, hey, it could be a
- 12:08fundraise and and it's, you know, pretty cool to see the
- 12:12Reds playing so well it. Really is.
- 12:15The Red Sox, on the other hand, not so much.
- 12:17As you mentioned a second ago, they they blew everybody out.
- 12:21Cora, if he wants to work this year and if there's an
- 12:24opportunity, I think he's going to get a chance.
- 12:25Maybe it's in New York with the Mets.
- 12:28What's going on there? Who was ultimately behind that
- 12:31decision? They had to make a move, but
- 12:33man, they cleaned house. The front office is an absolute
- 12:37mess right now under Craig Breslow, former reliever.
- 12:41You know the direction that they've gone.
- 12:44It looked like they were going all in on pitching.
- 12:47Crochet's had three bad starts. Brian Baio has been really,
- 12:50really bad. Sonny Gray's now hurt and he was
- 12:53a little uneven. And then you look at
- 12:55offensively, I didn't like the offense heading into the year at
- 12:58all. And like, I like Wilson
- 12:59Contreras, I like Willie or Abreu.
- 13:02Those can't be your two best hitters if you're a contender.
- 13:04Those are more supporting cast guys, not main characters.
- 13:07They were counting an awful, awful lot on 22 year old Roman
- 13:11Anthony to be an immediate super duper star in the middle of that
- 13:14lineup. They were counting on a bat
- 13:15bounce back Trevor Story. It looks like they were counting
- 13:18on Caleb Durbin to fill the void left at third base from Alex
- 13:21Bregman and he's been brutal. Probably hurts even more that
- 13:25Kyle Harrison's pitching so well for the Brewers.
- 13:28Who was part of that deal? Darren Duran almost unplayably
- 13:31bad. They have a lot of culprits on
- 13:35this ball right now. Almost nobody's getting it done.
- 13:38Kangaroo Court is back in New York.
- 13:40I don't know if you saw the story the Yankees have got
- 13:43together and if you challenge a call with the ABS system and the
- 13:47whole ball is actually in the strike zone, the.
- 13:49Entire ball. You got to pay a fine.
- 13:52I love it. Jazz Chisholm on Friday night.
- 13:54That was the truth. You.
- 13:55Saw that. I mean it's almost middle,
- 13:57middle and he challenges center cut so he doubled the fine that
- 14:01he paid into the kangaroo court there.
- 14:04I love stories like that and but it feels like it can build a
- 14:06little bit of camaraderie too. For these guys. 500 bucks is a
- 14:10lot different than 500 bucks for you and I.
- 14:13It's like a $5 fine. It kind of feels.
- 14:14Like they're gay. Right.
- 14:16It's it's something kind of fun just to get through the doldrums
- 14:19here and you make a bad choice. And like chance, it looked like
- 14:22he was kind of leaning over and that's probably why he just saw
- 14:24it weird as it was in the middle of the plate, but kind of a fun
- 14:27idea here. Matt Snyder from the Yankees.
- 14:30Yet another layer of how. Awesome ABS.
- 14:33Tremendous it really. Is that it just adds like
- 14:36another fun little thing. And, you know, I mean, you are
- 14:39to catch yourself doing it like watching games.
- 14:41Oh, challenge that, Challenge that.
- 14:43Because we get the square on the screen, of course we can know
- 14:47it's. Yeah, I Can't Sing the praises
- 14:49of ABS enough. And I love that we hear things
- 14:53like that from the clubhouse because there are stuff that
- 14:56there's stuff that I hear on occasion in the clubhouses.
- 14:59I go to Cincinnati relatively frequently that you don't really
- 15:03let out. But if they decide they want it
- 15:05out in the public, I think it's cool.
- 15:07I love hearing stuff like that. That's the type of thing that
- 15:10fans will really think that's like a social media shareable
- 15:13thing, right? Like a bunch of people who don't
- 15:15even like baseball that much will click on that and think
- 15:17that's funny. Absolutely.
- 15:20Of the six divisions will remove with the Rockies from the
- 15:22conversations, I think probably all three of us had them
- 15:25finishing last in the West. But here's your last place club
- 15:29starting in American League East Boston Royals, Astros, Mets,
- 15:34Brewers. It's unbelievable that those
- 15:37five teams. I thought the Brewers will win.
- 15:39A lot of people thought the Mets would win their division, Astros
- 15:42would win their division. Trent and I both thought the
- 15:44Royals were headed in the right direction and there was a lot of
- 15:47love for the right for the Red Sox this year.
- 15:49Matt. Yeah, it's some of it is a
- 15:53testament to it just being early, like the Brewers, only 3
- 15:561/2 out, they have a winning record.
- 15:58But some of it, like the Royals, they won three in a row, still
- 16:02only 11 and 17. They looked horrible, horrible
- 16:05before that weekend series with the Angels.
- 16:07Maybe that'll get their mojo back.
- 16:09That game last night with the Jack Caglian with the game time
- 16:12bomb, the extra innings, walk off home run.
- 16:15That's a sweep now, maybe. There was nobody there.
- 16:17To finally hit his first home run.
- 16:19Well, yeah, there was a, there was like a two or three hour
- 16:22delay. Oh, I didn't know that.
- 16:23Is that what it was? OK.
- 16:25Yeah, it was a it was a long weather delay, so nobody stuck
- 16:28around because they just, they were going to lose.
- 16:30Oh, that wasn't Sunday Night Baseball.
- 16:33I don't know. They started, they started it in
- 16:36the afternoon. I don't know exactly what
- 16:38happened. Maybe they moved it up to try to
- 16:41avoid the weather and then it came anyway.
- 16:44I would have to check on that. But yeah, right, that's not as
- 16:47bad that I thought. For some reason the Sunday Night
- 16:49Baseball crew was in Kansas City, which I found odd to begin
- 16:52with because I was watching NBA in NHL last night.
- 16:55Spencer Torkelson has been red hot.
- 16:58Is this one of those? He had a nice year last year,
- 17:00but just kind of we heard so much of him coming up and this
- 17:03was going to be an absolute star.
- 17:05He's going to hit the ground running and he's going to mash a
- 17:0745 home runs a year. It hasn't been that, but as at
- 17:10least turned himself into a solid major leaguer.
- 17:12How much more upside is there still there for Torkelson?
- 17:17He's only 26, so you know he could still find another level.
- 17:20I was initially going to stay. This is probably just who he is.
- 17:24I mean, he has 231 home run seasons.
- 17:27He's probably going to hit for a low average in a strike out a
- 17:29decent amount and hit bombs. And there's value to guys like
- 17:33that. Look at Pete Alonzo.
- 17:34It's been a very valuable player for the Mets for years.
- 17:37And we were just talking about how it probably hurt to lose
- 17:39him. I think there's that's a guy
- 17:41that you can probably just drop in the five hole and just say,
- 17:44hey, give us your 30 to 35 bombs.
- 17:47We don't care how low the average is and and be good with
- 17:49that. But like I said, 26, there's
- 17:53always there's always room for improvement in there.
- 17:55You never know, maybe he will kind of put a little bit more
- 17:59together there and maybe he could become like a Kyle
- 18:02Schwarber type. Probably it didn't much smaller
- 18:05sample, but you know that type of guy.
- 18:08Your power rankings are out. What was the the biggest?
- 18:11He went back and forth before you finally settled on what?
- 18:17It might have been at the bottom with some that's in the
- 18:19Phillies, like which team should I put last between these?
- 18:22Crazy that those are the 2. I I think you could go back and
- 18:26forth on the Braves versus Dodgers, for one.
- 18:30It wasn't that difficult for me, frankly, because I was just
- 18:32itching to move Dodgers down. And now that I finally had an
- 18:35excuse to do it, I just wanted to put somebody else up just for
- 18:38variety's sake. But I'm sure that there are many
- 18:41people out there who would argue and say the Dodgers are still
- 18:44the best team. But like through Friday, they've
- 18:46lost five of seven. They lost the series of the
- 18:48Giants, and they blew that game to the Cubs.
- 18:50Meanwhile, the Braves have just been a wrecking crew. 33 years
- 18:55ago yesterday, I saw this pop up on social media.
- 18:58It was one of my favorite meltdowns.
- 19:01What year? 1993 Hal McRae.
- 19:04Oh God, with the Royals Chuck in the telephone.
- 19:08Yes, and absolutely losing it. Maybe one of my favorite parts
- 19:12of that is there's a video camera outside of his office and
- 19:15the media members walking out at their faces.
- 19:17I it's just absolutely incredible.
- 19:19I'll send it to you guys. It is one of my favorites.
- 19:21What are your favorite postgame rants that you've that you
- 19:24remember from managers? I, I think I, I, they barely
- 19:30caught it, barely caught it on video, but when Lou Pinella went
- 19:33after Rob Dibble in the clubhouse in Cincinnati, that
- 19:37was a pretty good one. Like you've never seen managers
- 19:39go after play like that these days.
- 19:43The, the Speaking of Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson
- 19:47meltdown in Boston when Martin pulled Reggie in the middle of
- 19:50the inning and then they got into it in the in the dugout and
- 19:53then in the tunnel. That was a pretty good one as
- 19:55well. Oh man, those are the days value
- 19:57baseball back at that time. Such a great sport.
- 20:00Thank you, Matt Snyder, as always, love to hit with you.
- 20:02We'll do it again next Monday if your schedule allows.
- 20:05We hope that it does. Have a great week, Matt.
- 20:07Thank you man. Take care.
- 20:09Good to talk to you Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com as Trent and I
- 20:12talk baseball with our guy Matt Snyder.
- 20:14That's a good one. Some great ones.
- 20:16Hal McRae. I remember that now that you
- 20:18mentioned, remember that. Don't remember the reporters
- 20:20faces though. No, I was like 13.
- 20:24I just Hal McRae never seemed like that kind of guy to me.
- 20:28And maybe it's just illusions of a young kid.
- 20:30Yeah, you know, and then seeing that it just and Sports Center
- 20:33seem to run that did they every 10 minutes it felt like we're
- 20:36going to go back to this. Well, that's.
- 20:38I mean, Sports Center was it. It was, you know, back in that
- 20:41it was it. And watch it falling asleep at
- 20:43night, wake up the next morning and ready for school and right
- 20:46back to it. And I'll watch it for the third
- 20:47time, maybe. Absolutely.
- 20:49In case you missed something, you might have missed your
- 20:51opportunity here to win $1000 over the last week or so.

- 21:31All right, we'll take a time out.
- 21:32We'll talk. Iowa State next with Bill Seals.
- 21:35What did he see with his own two eyes as he was in the press box
- 21:38on Saturday watching Iowa State spring scrimmage spring event.
- 21:42That next, Miller and Condon till 2 on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 21:45Network. Hi, 130.
- 21:46Miller and Condon, welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:49Trenton can take you until just before 2.
- 21:52Trents plays of the day still to come, Circus sports sponsor
- 21:55those Circa and DraftKings, the two operators that I checked
- 22:00both have Texas Tech still on the board.
- 22:03We'll see where it goes. Bill Seals joins us, covers Iowa
- 22:06State, cyclonereport.com cyclonereport.com part of the
- 22:09rival slash on three network. When you saw the Brendan Sarsby
- 22:13suspension or I guess checking into a gambling treatment
- 22:16program, Bill, did you have flashbacks to the summer of Iowa
- 22:20State and Iowa and what way what they went through?
- 22:23What was it 3 or 4 years ago, Trent?
- 22:25Four years ago? Did you have flashbacks?
- 22:28Bill Seals. Well, it's, it's certainly seems
- 22:31like a story we're seeing more and more of these days.
- 22:34And, and you know, I think it all goes back to when, when all
- 22:38this stuff was going on in the state of Iowa with the Cyclones,
- 22:41Hawkeyes, I think everybody thought the state of Iowa.
- 22:44This isn't the only place where this is going on.
- 22:47And it just so happened we had it.
- 22:49What an overzealous government official that went on the went
- 22:54on the offensive there and and now we're seeing it done at
- 22:57other, other places. And I think it's been that way
- 22:59probably for a while, you know, and it's, I think similar timing
- 23:06to, I guess you would say, what was it coming out of spring?
- 23:11Decker's was assumed to be the starting quarterback.
- 23:15And then I think things changed and all of a sudden, you know,
- 23:18they had to get Rocco Beck ready to go in time for fall camp.
- 23:22And we'll see what happens with Soresby out of this.
- 23:24But, you know, they're going to have to go to a backup plan as
- 23:27they go through summer workouts. But I, I, I still have a, a
- 23:31feeling that they'll find a way to get Soresby back there in
- 23:34time for the season opener. I mean, they're paying him,
- 23:36paying him a lot of money to do that job down there.
- 23:41The NCAA is investigating. Cody Campbell's probably going
- 23:44to be able to help afford a real good lawyer to make that
- 23:47litigation. Make sure I'm sure Iowa State
- 23:49and Iowa fans will completely understand.
- 23:50Yeah, so no problem at all, right?
- 23:53Well, the NFL draft in the books and Dom Orange, no surprise goes
- 23:57goes in the third round, a guy that because of the scheme, I
- 24:01don't know if we ever got to see what he completely can do
- 24:05because it was so important for him to occupy that space in the
- 24:07middle and he was incredible obviously doing that.
- 24:09The haycock system. What do you look at him at the
- 24:12next level? What do you anticipate for Dobb
- 24:13Orange? Well, I think they're, they're
- 24:16going to get a, a better version of him.
- 24:19I, I actually do, I think, you know, there, there was a lot of,
- 24:23there were a lot of knocks on him.
- 24:25I, I think especially last season, but I think a lot went
- 24:29into that too. You know, the, the fact that he
- 24:31didn't have what, but was it two 2 1/2 tackles for loss or
- 24:35something like that, maybe maybe tops that he, that he had that
- 24:39and, and just wasn't making too many plays in the offensive
- 24:42backfield. But you know, I think a lot of
- 24:44that was a byproduct of who Iowa State had around him.
- 24:47You know, they lost over his last couple years and aims.
- 24:51They lost Will McDonald earlier on MJ Anderson.
- 24:56MJ Anderson the one year was going to be a big guy to to play
- 25:01outside of him in that three man front.
- 25:03He entered the NFL draft early. I don't even know what he's
- 25:06doing anymore, but he didn't get drafted.
- 25:09So I think a lot of that on orange was he had two or three
- 25:12guys in his face on every play and it was pretty hard to make
- 25:16plays in the backfield when that offensive line you're you're the
- 25:20guy they're targeting every play.
- 25:22So but I I think I'm not sure the Vikings run a three man,
- 25:25four man front. What it, what it?
- 25:27What's that look like, Trent? It was 4.
- 25:30It. Was four.
- 25:32Yeah. And him, him going into a four
- 25:34man front and they, they drafted another guy earlier on and
- 25:38draft. I think we're between him and
- 25:40yeah, yeah, him and Orange. I think that's going to be a
- 25:43nice foundation for them and and Dominique's going to have a lot
- 25:48of help around him going forward too.
- 25:50I think it's going to be a better product that you see out
- 25:52of him on the field. We'll see where where it goes
- 25:59for the Vikings. Well, let's talk here and now
- 26:01and let's get the let's go back to Saturday.
- 26:04Seemed like there was a decent amount of crowd over on the
- 26:06gathered on the lower bowl on the east side.
- 26:09Good to see. What did you see as you're
- 26:11watching the spring scrimmage, whatever they called it unfold?
- 26:16I'll start with the quarterbacks.
- 26:18First of all, did you see one that was head and shoulders
- 26:21above the other would do. Do you see why they came out and
- 26:23said that this is a 2 man battle at this race or at this point?
- 26:27How did you see it? Well, I think that Jalen Rayner,
- 26:30I you, you saw him take all the reps with the ones, it was
- 26:35pretty cut and dry really. I think every time with the twos
- 26:39was Flores and Moberly was the three the coaches kept and
- 26:42believe it was Rogers not not roll that came out afterwards,
- 26:47said the gap between Flores and Moberly shrinking as far as that
- 26:522 three thing. But I, I think it's pretty cut
- 26:55and dry. You know, Rayner, he was
- 26:56recruited out of Arkansas State, three-year starter there as
- 27:00quarterbacks coach, former offensive coordinators, the QB
- 27:03coach and Ames. Think it was all set up from the
- 27:06beginning. He was going to be the starter
- 27:08and I don't think he's done anything this spring to, you
- 27:10know, take away from that expectation.
- 27:13Running back spot, they got Peddaway coming in from Bowling
- 27:16Green, of course, Flora back and then Jaden Jackson.
- 27:18There was something, I can't remember, it might have been
- 27:20Rogers. I was reading the transcript for
- 27:22maybe it's another coach, but said something about Jackson,
- 27:25something about details, understanding kind of the little
- 27:27details. Hills, I don't know if you're
- 27:28part of the scrum at that time, but a Bill, your take away on
- 27:31that and does it feel like those three guys going to get the bulk
- 27:33of the carries? This yeah, that's, that's,
- 27:38that's an area of concern guys. I I think going into the summer
- 27:43Markellis Bass, I think he was the JUCO guy I told you you guys
- 27:47about last week that they were kind of on again off again what
- 27:50seems they're on again with him. They're going to be down
- 27:53visiting him the first week in May from what I hear Kansas JUCO
- 27:58running back and I I don't think that's a surprise.
- 28:01You you you saw Jaden Jackson. Yeah, he he put he put on a show
- 28:06for for those in attendance on Saturday.
- 28:08And then we heard coaches, you know, afterwards saying that
- 28:11that he had this day hasn't hasn't practiced a lot this
- 28:16spring, still needs to do the things off the field, the
- 28:19expectations, you know, for away from football that need to be
- 28:23met. So I wouldn't say they really
- 28:26Pooh poohed the day that the day that Jackson had.
- 28:30But I mean, I think they put things in perspective on, you
- 28:33know, where he's at and, you know, before everybody in the
- 28:35media and those in attendance on Saturday crown him as RB 1.
- 28:40You know, they they kind of wanted this to taper those
- 28:43expectations I think a little bit.
- 28:45And then you see in the corner of the the would have been the
- 28:48northwest corner of the end zone with a scooter in his lower leg
- 28:53in a cast was Saladin Allah. We had been hearing some
- 28:58positive reports about throughout the spring that he
- 29:01had, you know, shed the L BS that they wanted him to in the
- 29:04offseason. Was really kind of starting to
- 29:07come into his own that the last couple weeks and he's on the
- 29:09scooter in the corner there. And then now you're looking at a
- 29:13position where you've got Aiden what you got Aiden Flora you've
- 29:18got who has never really handled an RB-1 or A3 down type of
- 29:23responsibility before. Cameron Pettaway.
- 29:27We saw him in in at points on Saturday, but he's a scat back.
- 29:32I think he's not going to be a three down guy.
- 29:34And then you got Jaden Jackson, a guy who, you know, they said
- 29:38kind of needs to come around the stuff away from the football
- 29:42field. So those are the three guys
- 29:43that, well, the three scholarship guys, I should say,
- 29:46we saw Easton Miller a little bit, but those are the three
- 29:49scholarship guys. And then you've got 2 freshmen
- 29:53coming in the Caleb Francois, I think out of Minnesota, he's the
- 29:56player of the year up there, a high school player of the year
- 29:59that spec big things out of him. And he, he's going to get there
- 30:03with end of May, beginning of June.
- 30:05And, and I think they really got to accelerate his development,
- 30:08get him ready for fall camp. And who knows what they do if
- 30:11they add one more guy at that position.
- 30:13But that's that there's some urgency there as they come out
- 30:16of spring ball nonetheless. What can you tell us about the
- 30:19return of River Peppers? When he had that devastating
- 30:22injury, obviously just saw how the field for a couple snaps and
- 30:25that was it for him. Where is he on his way back?
- 30:28Well, he was in street clothes on on Saturday watching
- 30:32practice, didn't have, you know, no boots on, nothing there with
- 30:37the the leg. He's just walking around normal
- 30:40street clothes. So, but I think everything we've
- 30:43heard over the spring is, is they, I don't think they're
- 30:45expecting to get a whole lot out of him this season as he makes
- 30:50his return from that. That's why I think you know why,
- 30:53why it's such an urgent situation there with them trying
- 30:56to to get some depth going into the season.
- 30:59What else, what other positions do you think that as you watched
- 31:03it maybe left you with some question marks or the staff is
- 31:07still trying to figure out is there a position, not
- 31:10necessarily players, but a position more so Bill?
- 31:14Well, I think tight end remains a question mark.
- 31:19Yeah, tell me about it. Tell me about it.
- 31:21I don't, I don't think you're going to see as much 12 or
- 31:24probably 13 personnel as what we've seen in the past.
- 31:28They're they're still trying to find their their guys there.
- 31:31We have heard some good things about Christian Greenlaw.
- 31:34He's still pretty new to the position.
- 31:36The Hampton transfer Keaton Ross cops back off of last year's
- 31:41team. Tyler Fortenberry, he's a
- 31:43senior. He's just got one year left.
- 31:46But a lot of question marks there.
- 31:47We didn't really see, you know, much other than the blocking
- 31:50aspect of it. That position still like through
- 31:54the air passing wise, we didn't see that much flash much on
- 31:58Saturday. The the wide receiver position.
- 32:02That's kind of another thing too.
- 32:03We saw a number of guys and they were rotating through with the
- 32:06ones, the twos, the threes. So it was, it was pretty hard I
- 32:10think for us to get a read on on who the top guys are there
- 32:14because they were getting them reps along every unit.
- 32:19So obviously Cody Jackson was a guy he scored, scored some
- 32:23touchdowns, saw some good things out of him.
- 32:27He's a veteran, one of those seniors been around.
- 32:29He's played at the Power 4 level.
- 32:32You know, Evan Boyd made made a nice catch along the sideline,
- 32:36the run, run after the catch made some things happen there.
- 32:40So Amari Hayes, he was another one rotating through.
- 32:43Dominic Overby. Yeah, he he's another guy,
- 32:46Carter Papst, I think all what, six of those guys?
- 32:51It's going to be interesting to see how that sorts its way out
- 32:54come fall camp. So as we talked about a couple
- 32:57weeks back, Braden all's out for the year with that ACL tear.
- 33:00I guess the good news is they got a bunch of practices without
- 33:02him trying to figure things out and thought it was interesting.
- 33:05Bobbitt after the game was asked a little bit, He talked about
- 33:08being cautious. Did you read that into being
- 33:10cautious just and we can't afford another injury here in
- 33:13the defensive backfield and specifically it's safety.
- 33:17Yeah, I think that's that again, that's that's probably I I would
- 33:20say running back on offense. I I would flip to defense and I
- 33:25would say safety is probably the biggest area of concern right
- 33:29now. Alls was it going to be a
- 33:31projected starter there? They won't have him.
- 33:35I think it's even gotten to the point in the spring or it sounds
- 33:38like they were experimenting with some corners.
- 33:40They've got good depth at corner, although there were
- 33:42three guys that didn't suit up on Saturday, non non
- 33:46participants. So they've got good depth at
- 33:49corner and then they've kind of experimented with a few of those
- 33:52guys at safety as they kind of look for answers there.
- 33:56Duron Goodman, He's a name that we hear quite a bit of a safety
- 34:02that's a a senior Drew surges. We talked about him for a, a
- 34:06number of years. You know, Micah Harper, he's
- 34:09another a senior. I think he was kind of in and
- 34:12out of the the mix though over the spring with an with an
- 34:15injury. So they've got some questions
- 34:18there. And then, you know, beyond those
- 34:19guys that I just mentioned, it's pretty much all red shirt
- 34:22freshmen and freshmen when it comes to that safety position.
- 34:26Bill, last thing for me, I'm moving over to women's
- 34:29basketball. Iowa State named Carolyn McCombs
- 34:32as the associate head coach. Do we assume that when Fenley
- 34:37does leave that she will will be the heir apparent?
- 34:39Are they bringing her in as the as the next women's head coach?
- 34:44How do you read this Bill? Well, I think that's certainly
- 34:48lead. It certainly makes me think
- 34:51that's the case with the the title that they've given her.
- 34:55You know, Jamie Pollard in the in the past recent years has
- 34:59been reluctant to hire the head coaches in the in a lot of those
- 35:04sports that have not been head coaches.
- 35:07McCombs does have head coaching experience from George
- 35:10Washington. Stony Brook was just on Auburn
- 35:14staff last season. So some exposure to basketball
- 35:18here at the high major level. So I think it points that
- 35:21direction. But you know, then then again,
- 35:26nothing would surprise me, I guess at at this point, you
- 35:28know, they could very well go out and, and extend Finley for
- 35:31another 3 or 4 years. You just, you never know how
- 35:34this is going to go. And you know, Billy Finley, his
- 35:37son's been obviously been on that staff.
- 35:44Yeah, I, I would, I with this hiring of McCombs, I think it's
- 35:48certainly within limbo what they're what's going to happen
- 35:51with him. But I think you could be, you
- 35:53could be right on on to something that so, yeah.
- 35:56And they've got a commitment too in in from Bishop Helen in this
- 36:022027 class. So I think she probably knows
- 36:05what's going on a little bit, you know, behind the scenes and
- 36:08what's not out there publicly. Yeah, I heard Latoya Shaban and
- 36:12Bill Junior are about to may not be back as early as this year.
- 36:16That's what a little bird told me over the weekend.
- 36:18Nothing official as of yet. I'll go ahead, Trent.
- 36:21Final thing for me, Bill on the men's side, who's going to be
- 36:25the leading scorer on next year's team?
- 36:26Good one. Boy, that's a good because I.
- 36:30Was going through it, I couldn't figure it out.
- 36:32You know, and I I wonder if it if it might be somebody that's
- 36:36not even on the roster right now, to be honest with, you
- 36:39know, we saw positive things out of Killian Torre down the
- 36:42stretch. Bateman seem to disappear.
- 36:44I think he he'll he's in for a big offseason, though.
- 36:48I think he's going to bounce back in a big way.
- 36:50Buchanan wasn't much of A score played.
- 36:53I think I don't see him leading the team in scoring.
- 36:56So, you know, maybe maybe someone like a Leon Bond or or
- 37:02like a Trey Singleton. I think they expect big things
- 37:05from him. But that's a good question.
- 37:08I think I'm, I'm not going to say, I'm not going to say Iowa
- 37:11State is, is it is Arizona by any means.
- 37:15But you looked at Arizona's scoring, how it was distributed
- 37:18this, this year. What I think really stood out
- 37:21about them is they had what probably 6 guys, I think that
- 37:24average between around what, 10 to 1314 lbs.
- 37:29I think you could see that balance.
- 37:31I think you're going to see that out of this year's team.
- 37:34It's not going to be top heavy out of that, that big three that
- 37:37we saw that it's all gone now. Excellent question, TC.
- 37:41We should save that one. Yes, absolutely.
- 37:43It feels like it's going to be like 7 guys at average between 7
- 37:47and 13 points or something like that.
- 37:48But. Who's number 1 exactly?
- 37:51Bill Seal, cyclonereport.com Bill, what are you?
- 37:54What are you working on this week?
- 37:56Well, I just started rolling out a a series this well, it's an
- 38:00over the noon hour actually a look at each of the positions
- 38:03coming out of spring ball. Just kind of what my
- 38:07observations were, what what we heard from coaches, kind of a
- 38:11post spring outlook on each of those positions going into the
- 38:15summer. Started with quarterbacks today.
- 38:18We discussed those on on the show here a little a little bit
- 38:21ago, but more in depth look at at that position right now on
- 38:25Cyclone Report. We'll have running backs and
- 38:28we'll just kind of start rolling through each of the position
- 38:31groups over the next couple weeks and how those look
- 38:35recruiting. That was a big a big deal.
- 38:37They had a huge group of visitors on Saturday for that
- 38:40spring showcase. I think they're on commitment
- 38:43watch probably for one of those guys, another one I think maybe
- 38:48in the next couple weeks. So I think they're they're going
- 38:50to keep rolling here. They've got a lot of momentum
- 38:52right now and they they're really, I think that this new
- 38:57staff is, is really what their message.
- 38:59I think it's being heard loud and clear.
- 39:01They're really clicking with high school recruits and they've
- 39:04they've hit the ground running, no doubt about it.
- 39:07Good stuff. Bill Seals, have a great week.
- 39:09We will speak with you next Monday if your schedule allows.
- 39:11Thanks for popping on Bill. Appreciate it.
- 39:14Looking forward to it guys, have a good one.
- 39:15You do the same Bill Seals as we talk Iowa State with our guy
- 39:19from cyclonereport.com. Trends, plays of the day or
- 39:22next. They're sponsored by Circus
- 39:24Sports, Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 39:27I'm Miller and Condon. Welcome back.
- 39:29Iowa Sports Radio Network. Our final segment, trends, plays
- 39:32of the day. Circus sports sponsor those.
- 39:34By the way, Sean and Lucas, they're on location here this
- 39:38afternoon. Vero Health in West Des Moines.
- 39:40Vero Health in West Des Moines, off the bench from 2:00 until
- 39:44five. Comes to us from Vero Health in
- 39:46West Des Moines. You've got NBA, you've got NHL.
- 39:50You've got a decent slate of baseball games tonight.
- 39:54WNBA, They're playing preseason. Yes.
- 39:57Now, right? You don't get it.
- 39:58You don't. Do you tell me you don't?
- 40:00I haven't. OK, good.
- 40:02So don't put that out of me though, because I'll find a way
- 40:05absolutely you know B4 games 4 props a total of 8 for tonight
- 40:10let's kick it off with the games I'm going to well after watching
- 40:13the rays over the weekend dismantle my God awful Minnesota
- 40:15Twins they're. Going the wrong way aren't.
- 40:17They Yeah. So that's.
- 40:17A good couple of weeks, Trent. Then week and a half, OK, plus
- 40:211/22 for the Rays tonight on the road against Cleveland.
- 40:24Speaking of those aforementioned Minnesota Twins, yes, give me
- 40:27the Mariners -127 tonight. Luis Castillo gets the ball
- 40:30against Connor Prelip. Prelip's going to be pretty
- 40:33good. It's going to take a while
- 40:34though for that one and one more in baseball.
- 40:37Play the Cubs tonight minus the one O 2.
- 40:38Boyd was good in his first start back against Vasquez.
- 40:41Like the pitching match up there on the West Coast for the Cubs
- 40:45in the NBA tonight, grabbing the Magic and the points at home.
- 40:48It's a bunch of points, 3 no, that I'm thinking, I'm thinking
- 40:51of the Oklahoma State, yeah. But the magic getting 3 1/2 like
- 40:54this feels like a coin flip. I'm going to grab the points
- 40:57with the Magic. Here's the props for tonight
- 41:00Baseball. Under 7 1/2 strikeouts for your
- 41:03boy Dylan Cease. He's good.
- 41:05He really is trend. He's been phenomenal.
- 41:07I think you might see a little uptick after the core of firing
- 41:09though a little better at bats. Well, they've won two straights
- 41:13since they ran him out of town. So a more competitive at bats,
- 41:17we'll put it that way for the Bow Sox tonight and Alex
- 41:20Bregman. We're going to go over 1 1/2
- 41:22total bases in this one. You get plus 165 on that.
- 41:26We'll jump with Bregman 2 in the NBA tonight.
- 41:29I think the Timberwolves are walking into a Hornets nest.
- 41:32That's a big number, though. After what happened late, so
- 41:35here's the angle. I think it's going to be a
- 41:36blowout. Minnesota is going to be down
- 41:38and that means the Joker, Jamal Murray not going to play a ton
- 41:41of minutes. Under 14 1/2 rebounds for the
- 41:44Joker, under 6 1/2 assists for Murray.
- 41:47That's the angle on that one. Four player plays and games, 4
- 41:52player props. And if you've been noticing, the
- 41:54player props have been going much better.
- 41:56Yep, absolutely. So how will NBC?
- 41:58How will HO handle it? They won't keep their crew
- 42:00there. Well, I'm sure that most of it
- 42:02in the can. Will the news?
- 42:03Yeah. You would think right?
- 42:05I don't know, can you put news in the can with some breaks?
- 42:09Well, then you stick around. You guys the late.
- 42:11Night. Put a little something on ice
- 42:13ready to go right afterwards. That's probably what anyways.
- 42:16All right, that's going to do it for us.
- 42:19We appreciate you being here. We're going to be a fun night of
- 42:21sports, and NHL's not the greatest late tonight.
- 42:23I'll be watching the mammoth. I almost got to a play with the
- 42:25mammoth. You told me you guess you and
- 42:27Palm think the Vegas is. Cooked.
- 42:28I do, yeah. Yeah.
- 42:30I thought that was maybe 1 of the more likely upsets prior to
- 42:33it. The puck dropping in the
- 42:35playoffs. That's going to do it for us.
- 42:36Appreciate you being here with us.
- 42:38We'll do it again tomorrow. Joel Donald, the voice of the
- 42:40minister, Soda Wild is going to join us just after 12:30, about
- 42:4312:35 for Joe tomorrow. If you're a hockey fan, a Wild
- 42:46fan, look forward to that segment.
- 42:48Joe Miller and Cotton weekdays talk sports with you from noon
- 42:51to two. Thanks for being with us on the
- 42:53Iowa Sports Radio Network.
