Transcript
- 0:04Welcome, everyone.
- 0:05You are listening to the scene with Dave and Bubba.
- 0:09My name is Dave Holly, and I have my own podcast called the Dave Holly hour, which
- 0:14focuses on arts and entertainment, which includes music.
- 0:19But this podcast, the scene with Dave and Bubba, you're gonna hear a lot more music
- 0:24because, well, Bubba is a musician, singer songwriter Bubba Startz.
- 0:29How are you?
- 0:29And don't forget concert promoter
- 0:31as well.
- 0:32You do it all.
- 0:33Which is what we're here to do.
- 0:34Right?
- 0:35To not just promote myself and what I do musically, but to promote the rest of our local
- 0:39scene and our, our more regional scene as well.
- 0:43We're in a a very a very precarious geographical location here.
- 0:48Lots of borders, lots of different towns, lots of different states.
- 0:51Right?
- 0:51So, when we say local, you know, it can stretch a few 100 miles in each direction, I think.
- 0:57So Because, you know, we got the whole state of South Dakota cause we wanna give our due to the
- 1:01West Coast, Northwest Iowa, and Southwest Minnesota, and, even down into Nebraska, you
- 1:07know?
- 1:07Correct.
- 1:07And the Omaha area has a lot of great music going on.
- 1:10But we're gonna focus on getting the people that really haven't had the chance to get a lot
- 1:17of promotion behind them.
- 1:20Right.
- 1:21Well, we're gonna focus on people that I'm working with, especially, but growing from
- 1:26there and, you know, mostly independent local singer songwriters and people who are forming
- 1:32bands and are doing things and releasing things all independently right now.
- 1:36And we wanna give them their due credit and, give them a little bit of press and publicity
- 1:42where we can.
- 1:43And also, you know, booking and promoting them in our shows and and things as well.
- 1:48So it's kind of a full circle moment between this and all the shows and everything that
- 1:53we're doing all weekend and connecting that with of the week and the rest of the arts
- 1:57hopefully in the future.
- 1:58Well, let's give people a sample of what they can hear on this show.
- 2:01Tell us a little bit about Alyssa Kaiser.
- 2:03Alyssa was just at our ladies night songwriters rounds in Mitchell at doctor Lucky's.
- 2:09Great young singer songwriter.
- 2:12I can't say enough good things about this young lady.
- 2:15She came in and absolutely blew us away at the ladies night.
- 2:18Her range was from doing a cover of Britney Spears toxic to her own, I would say very
- 2:26Taylor Swift esque, song that I'm gonna introduce you to today called Seatbelt.
- 2:31Easy to see the influence that Ms.
- 2:33Swift has had on the world, when you listen to someone like Alyssa.
- 2:38She's great.
- 2:39She's very, very talented.
- 2:40She's a very talented songwriter.
- 2:42She's gonna do great things.
- 2:43I know that she's going to Mount Marty University right now.
- 2:46She's a volleyball player as well, so a student athlete.
- 2:49And, she's staying really busy playing.
- 2:52Yankton, Mitchell, we got her into some shows.
- 2:55I know that she's trying to break into Sioux Falls and and our scene up here.
- 2:58So we're definitely talking about working her into our other projects at Club David and
- 3:02beyond.
- 3:03So yeah, I think this song Seatbelt is a great encapsulation of what the scene is going to
- 3:11look like over the next five years.
- 3:13We have a lot of young ladies that are coming up.
- 3:15Rowan Grace is another one from out in the in the Rapid City area, who's going to be coming
- 3:20up.
- 3:20She's releasing music.
- 3:22Alyssa is right in that same vein.
- 3:23It's pop.
- 3:24It's rock.
- 3:25She's got a lot of range.
- 3:27And, I think she's a really talented songwriter, Dave.
- 3:30I think you're really gonna like this song.
- 3:31All right.
- 3:32Here it is.
- 3:33This is Seatbelt by Alyssa Kaiser.
- 6:46Welcome back.
- 6:46We just listened to Seatbelt by Alyssa Kaiser.
- 6:49Dave, what did you think?
- 6:50Oh, I when you were talking about, Taylor Swift and so forth, yeah, you could definitely get
- 6:54it.
- 6:55But, I guess I loved this song because of the way that it transitioned.
- 7:01You know, there was a there was some fun stuff in there, Larry, but I'm always one of those
- 7:05when I hear a young person because, you know, face it, I'm 61, and sometimes I think that,
- 7:11music ended after Sinatra.
- 7:14But so I'm always like, okay.
- 7:17Why did they call it c oh, there it is.
- 7:19And and then you get the hook.
- 7:20And I just, always enjoy a fun tune like that.
- 7:24She is, very talented, because that's a great song lyrically as the songwriter and as a
- 7:32singer, it's there.
- 7:35What a great start to the show.
- 7:37Fantastic.
- 7:38Yes.
- 7:38Fantastic.
- 7:39And I really wanted to start with a feature, you know, Alyssa, especially because she's
- 7:44someone that we're new to working with.
- 7:46Mhmm.
- 7:47But she is the future of the scene.
- 7:49And that's really why we started the podcast.
- 7:52That's why we are doing so much work.
- 7:55DBS entertainment doing so much work in the community to form songwriter nights, open mics,
- 8:00and different things like this to foster this young talent that we have in the area to allow
- 8:05them the space to become really great artists.
- 8:08And I think this young lady is on a great path.
- 8:11Another person that I think is well on their way being a great artist, and he's actually one
- 8:15of mine and my wife Danielle's favorites, is Devin Santz.
- 8:19This song that I'm gonna introduce you to, Dave, is called I'm Not a Hero.
- 8:24This one is special to us, And I know it's special to Devin as well, because the
- 8:31collaboration it was with some good friends of his.
- 8:34Tyler Bills is a lead singer for Judd Hoos.
- 8:37Chris Hoosengay is on this as well.
- 8:38He goes Chris Graves.
- 8:39They work together tirelessly on shows.
- 8:42They they play a lot of duo shows together.
- 8:44I know they recorded it with Tom Freer out at Cottonwood Recording, who's a good friend of
- 8:48mine as well.
- 8:49So it was kind of a celebration.
- 8:51He shot an awesome music video for it.
- 8:53They had a ton of fun with this.
- 8:55And I think it really comes out in the song.
- 8:57And the song is so poignant.
- 9:00And you'll hear Devin's voice.
- 9:02He's so unique.
- 9:04He's the most unique voice and music today.
- 9:06And his stage persona, everything is so cohesive and coherent.
- 9:11It's really, he's got a great stage persona.
- 9:14He's got great stage presence when you go see a live show.
- 9:17And it comes out in his music videos, in his songwriting, and and in the song itself.
- 9:23So with no further ado, I give you I'm Not a Hero by Devin Sans.
- 9:28Can you play I'm Not a Hero?
- 9:30Sure.
- 9:31This one's for you.
- 9:48No.
- 9:51I'm not a hero.
- 10:01All these words Alright.
- 14:02Good job, everyone.
- 14:03You know, Bumpa, sometimes there are songs that you listen to and you can envision where you
- 14:09would really love to be listening to it, and that's when I wanna be on a country road,
- 14:14windows down on a nice day, and turning the radio up high.
- 14:20Maybe do an 11.
- 14:21That's how, music should be listened to.
- 14:23Yeah.
- 14:24Man, that just gave me that vision, and such a a catchy tune.
- 14:29Very understandable on the lyrics.
- 14:30That's another thing that I I like quite often is that, you know, you can just sing along with
- 14:35it after the first verse.
- 14:37You're you're ready to go and say, hey.
- 14:41Have you heard this guy?
- 14:43You know, go ahead and listen to this Devon guy.
- 14:46Yeah.
- 14:46Wow.
- 14:47It's great stuff.
- 14:48And, you know, that's that's one of the focuses of, this show, the scene with Dave and Bubba.
- 14:56Although, it really could be Bubba and Dave too.
- 14:59But, what I love about it is the fact that it's originals that we're focusing on for the most
- 15:03part.
- 15:04When you get great lyrical things to go with great music, you know, there are so many things
- 15:10that, don't happen right.
- 15:13That's a great example of how music happens right.
- 15:16And Devin is a is a powerhouse as far as, output goes.
- 15:22He has a huge discography already.
- 15:25He's always working and writing on more.
- 15:28So yeah, if you're if you're going to follow someone you love original songwriting, you
- 15:33love, a little bit different.
- 15:35He can be a little darker sometimes too, with some of his themes, but he's as original as it
- 15:39gets for me.
- 15:40And guys like him are a big reason why I'm so focused on doing what we're doing now, building
- 15:47the show, building the scene in general, because we got a good thing going on here right
- 15:53now in South Dakota and in the region where I think not as many of us have that dream of
- 16:00moving to Nashville and and doing that and playing for no money.
- 16:04And I think we understand that there's some really good paying gigs around here.
- 16:08And if we all kind of band together that we can do even bigger and better things.
- 16:12And Devin's been a big part and a big believer of what we've been doing.
- 16:15We've brought him out for some shows out here already and worked with him out in the Black
- 16:19Hills as well.
- 16:20He's from the Rapid City area now, originally from Colorado, but, I know he calls the Black
- 16:26Hills home now.
- 16:27So, yeah, he's a big focus of what we're gonna be doing this year.
- 16:31So get used to seeing and hearing Devin Sands.
- 16:34You mentioned, you know, the the dream of Nashville and getting down there and then
- 16:38playing for nothing.
- 16:40I have, family down in the Nashville area, and, my nephew is in two different bands.
- 16:46One is an indie rock band, and the other is a Pearl Jam cover band.
- 16:50Great bands.
- 16:51And so one time I was talking to him, I said, so, you know, when you get a gig down there,
- 16:56what do you guys take home for it?
- 16:59And he laughs and says, if you want to play in Nashville on Broadway, you're usually having to
- 17:06pay a stagehand, pay for the right to be on the stage, etcetera, etcetera.
- 17:11It's like so different than what everybody imagines.
- 17:14You know, we always wish anybody, especially when it comes to dreams, you wanna wish people
- 17:19well.
- 17:20I am I hate the people that wanna see people fail.
- 17:24I wanna see everybody succeed.
- 17:26Yeah.
- 17:26As you mentioned, Devon already has quite a discography.
- 17:28It's a great thing, and it's great that people do stick around and realize that either, a, you
- 17:37can make your business out of what you love, or even if you don't make a living at it, you're
- 17:46still gonna have plenty of opportunity.
- 17:48Making an impact is the biggest thing to me where it might not make a living.
- 17:53I don't know what it's going to do for us yet.
- 17:56I just know that I'm being called to put my time into something greater than myself right
- 18:01now.
- 18:01Mhmm.
- 18:02And if that means building out and and capitalizing on some opportunities that are
- 18:06coming my way because of what my band happens to be doing right now, I'm trying to hold that
- 18:11door open and to to bring everyone that's waiting in line outside and with me.
- 18:15You know, there's no exclusivity to what we're doing either, Dave.
- 18:18We're wide open.
- 18:19We we wanna connect with everybody.
- 18:20Yeah.
- 18:21We do.
- 18:21You know?
- 18:22But also somebody I've talked with, you know, venue owners about is that not every
- 18:27opportunity is for everyone either.
- 18:29Right?
- 18:30So I'm not going to be offended when my show that I want to bring to yours, you think just
- 18:37doesn't fit demographically with your or the vibe of your place.
- 18:40That's fine because we'll find a home for that, you know, but also there's a
- 18:44new place.
- 18:44Looking for?
- 18:45Right.
- 18:45Exactly.
- 18:46For you.
- 18:46Yeah.
- 18:47Do you do you have some direction of what you want your vibe to be?
- 18:49Because I think we can provide that.
- 18:51I think the Sioux Falls area and the scene, you know, regionally, I think we can provide for
- 18:55everything.
- 18:56We have comedy.
- 18:57We have theater.
- 18:58We have country bands.
- 18:59We have rock bands.
- 19:00We have, you know, pop artists, not unlike Alyssa Kaiser, who we heard from earlier.
- 19:04Yeah.
- 19:05So there's a lot to offer in Sioux Falls and and South Dakota, you know, in the greater
- 19:11area.
- 19:11So we're really trying to bring that to light and and have this be a hub for artists to get
- 19:16heard and then hopefully, get to build on their careers from the opportunities we can provide
- 19:22here.
- 19:22You are listening to the scene.
- 19:24We hope that you are having a great time as we are listening to original music.
- 19:29So the next one on the list, our final artist of the scene this week, Clayton Ryan.
- 19:35Tell us about this.
- 19:36Clayton's gonna blow up this year, and I'll tell you why.
- 19:39The songwriting is out of this world.
- 19:44And not only is the quality there, the quantity of it that he's putting out right now is
- 19:49incredible.
- 19:50I think I told you about it when we did our podcast together that he's writing a song a day
- 19:54and posting it on his Instagram.
- 19:55Right?
- 19:55Even if each one isn't a full fledged song, you have all these ideas.
- 19:59You're gonna have 365 ideas by the end of the that's a whole career, Dave, in my book.
- 20:06So, yeah, he he's doing a lot.
- 20:07He's in the Minneapolis area, and he's unbelievably talented.
- 20:10I mean, that's that's the key.
- 20:12And he works really hard.
- 20:13He's got some great representation now, Coffee Break Entertainment, who DBS Entertainment is
- 20:18going to be working closely with to bring more Minneapolis artists down here, but also to help
- 20:23our South Dakota artists to get up into that bigger market and to build themselves a fan
- 20:27base up there as well.
- 20:29Clayton is the tip of the iceberg there.
- 20:31He's really the best of us.
- 20:32He's played, out in the Black Hills band, the Brandon Jones band, who, starts and ends, has a
- 20:38little bit of a relationship with now.
- 20:39And he's good friends also with Tom Freer out at Cottonwood Recording.
- 20:43He was also featured on Triple Fine, my latest release, playing bass and singing along on some
- 20:47on some backup vocals.
- 20:49So Clayton's just a force.
- 20:50You're gonna love this song.
- 20:51Better man is something deeply personal to Clayton himself.
- 20:57The song was written at a time before.
- 21:01And then after leaving Los Angeles and after heartbreak and financial break, as he put it to
- 21:07me, that he revised some of the lyrics, and it really became what it is now.
- 21:12So I think you're really gonna like this one, Dave.
- 21:14And this is Clayton Ryan.
- 21:16Better man.
- 21:29I was making up time, feeling low running high, my soul was headed southbound.
- 21:51And I still ain't sure, but the love that I've earned got me feeling that I won the fight.
- 22:32Well, my mind was heavy and my body was weary, held up by my bones and brain.
- 22:39I was feeling mighty low like a flower couldn't grow with the sun being down
- 24:58Don't get much better than that, Dave.
- 25:01That is for sure.
- 25:04Oh, my better man by Clayton Ryan.
- 25:10That one blew me away.
- 25:11And then while we were listening to that, you said he's 25 in the first well, actually, after
- 25:18my mouth gaped open and gasped, it's like, that voice does not sound 25.
- 25:25That has maturity in it that's been honed and just has such a great sound to it.
- 25:31He is seasoned in every way and such an accomplished musician.
- 25:36I mean, everything you heard on that song besides the drums on the piano was him.
- 25:40Incredibly talented musician, incredibly good natured and good spirited man.
- 25:46He is a better man.
- 25:47I think he's the best of us right now.
- 25:50He's got such a good thing going on.
- 25:52He's got a great team.
- 25:53I I really think he's gonna crack through, and that's what we're looking for is to help some
- 25:59of these artists to to do that.
- 26:00Right?
- 26:01To make those opportunities for these beautiful songs to see the light
- 26:07of day
- 26:07and to do more than just throwing them out there on a on a playlist on Spotify.
- 26:11Right?
- 26:11To to give them some life, to talk about these artists, to get to know the people behind the
- 26:16songs, and to then feature them hopefully on future interviews.
- 26:19And a a lot of big plans for the show, Dave.
- 26:22I think this was a great first episode.
- 26:25I do too.
- 26:25It's a nice little pilot for everybody to get an idea about what it's going to feature.
- 26:30And, you know, the thing is, in just a moment, I'm gonna let you tell people, where they might
- 26:35be able to see these artists live because a dear friend of mine, his favorite saying is,
- 26:42live music is good for the soul.
- 26:44Any of these three that we just played, I would love to see live.
- 26:49Well, I think you're gonna get a chance to, Dave.
- 26:51All three of these artists are people that I'm pretty close with.
- 26:54Alyssa Kaiser plays a lot in the Yankton area.
- 26:57We're talking about having her up at Club David for the first songwriter's night at Club David,
- 27:03May 9.
- 27:04We're working out some details, but hope to have her in for that one.
- 27:08Devin Sance is gonna be in town April 27.
- 27:11He's actually gonna be out at Mitchell at Doctor Lucky's for our gentlemen's songwriter
- 27:15round now.
- 27:16We had Alyssa for our ladies songwriters night.
- 27:18Well, now Devin's going to be featured at that with his buddy, Chris Graves, and actually
- 27:23another friend and a member of the Coffee Break Entertainment artist or roster of artists
- 27:28rather is Samuel John.
- 27:31So he'll be coming down to join us from the Minneapolis area and to really make that April
- 27:3527 show something special.
- 27:37He's actually taking the spot of Clayton Ryan, who had the opportunity to open up, at the
- 27:43State Theater, I think, up there for one of big national act on the same date.
- 27:47So he wasn't able to, come down here.
- 27:49So we said, hey, buddy.
- 27:51No no, no hard feelings here.
- 27:53You guys send somebody down in your place that's new to us, and that's gonna work fine.
- 27:58So, yeah, catch Clayton Ryan.
- 28:00Best follow on Instagram.
- 28:01He's writing a song a day, and, his schedule is mostly up in the Minneapolis area right now.
- 28:06So if you're looking to get up and and see something in the cities, definitely check him
- 28:09out and and find where he's at.
- 28:11He'll be down visiting this summer.
- 28:13We're working on some future dates yet, but with his schedule and things being as they are
- 28:17rapidly accelerating for him, we're hoping to get him through later on this year.
- 28:22And the great thing about that is, you know, when, I have a cancellation for my own podcast,
- 28:27I have rules as to what I accept as a cancellation, a better paying gig, and
- 28:34grandchildren.
- 28:36There you go.
- 28:36Yep.
- 28:37If you if it's because any one of those two things, yeah, I'll let you buy.
- 28:41We'll catch you on the flip flop there.
- 28:44Well, Dave, I wanna thank you so much for taking some time with me and my my crazy ideas
- 28:48here.
- 28:49I love crazy ideas.
- 28:50Hey.
- 28:51This is the craziest of them all.
- 28:53We thank you guys so much for listening out there.
- 28:55We hope you give the page a follow.
- 28:57Check out the scene everywhere on social media.
- 29:00And, yeah, help us grow this thing, and let's let's be better together.
- 29:04Thanks for joining us.
- 29:05We'll be back with more in the very, very near future.
