- Good morning, I'm Kai Rivers and this is Studio Signal — the week ahead edition, brought to you by Harkins Capital. Let's talk about what's coming. But first, we have to talk about the weekend box office, because the summer movie season just kicked off with some serious style. As we talked about last week, all eyes were on 'The Devil Wears Prada 2', and wow, did it deliver. The sequel strutted to a massive two hundred and thirty-three million dollar global opening. That is a huge debut, and according to TheWrap, it's just a hair above how last year's summer season kicked off. It proves there's a massive, underserved audience ready to show up for a smart, female-led story. You just don't see numbers like this without tapping into the cultural zeitgeist, and it looks like Miranda Priestly is as powerful as ever. Meanwhile, a couple of other juggernauts are just continuing to print money. The 'Michael' biopic is still dancing its way up the charts, nearing a four hundred and twenty-four million dollar cumulative total worldwide. And 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' is on an absolute tear, closing in on nine hundred million dollars globally. Screen Rant is already speculating that it’s on a clear path to become 2026's first billion-dollar movie. The power of Nintendo's IP is just undeniable at this point. Alright, with the weekend recap out of the way, let's look ahead at the week starting Monday, May 4th. First up, it is a massive week for earnings. On Tuesday, we'll get quarterly results from Disney. All eyes will be on their streaming numbers and whether the parks division can continue its incredible performance. Then on Wednesday, Airbnb reports, which is always a good indicator of consumer travel and leisure spending. And closing out the week on Thursday, we hear from Warner Bros. Discovery. After a lot of painful cost-cutting and strategic shifts, Wall Street is going to be looking for hard proof that their turnaround plan is actually working. On the content side, this week is a little quiet on the major theatrical release front, which is smart scheduling. Nobody wants to go up against the second weekend of 'Devil Wears Prada 2'. But we are keeping an eye on the streaming platforms for any surprise drops or big announcements as they try to counter-program the box office heat. The other big thing to watch this week is happening in the world of advertising. It's the start of the big IAB Podcast Upfronts on Thursday. This is where major audio players like NPR, Wondery, and SiriusXM will be making their big pitch to advertisers for the year ahead. It’s a key barometer for the health of the podcasting ad market and will give us a really good sense of where the big money is flowing in audio for the rest of the year. This really sets us up for a few key questions for the week. First, can Disney's earnings report on Tuesday convince investors that its streaming strategy is finally on the right track? Second, will Warner Bros. Discovery's numbers show signs of actual growth, or will the narrative still be dominated by cuts and consolidation? And finally, what signals will we get from the Podcast Upfronts about the real strength of the audio advertising market in 2026? It’s going to be a fascinating week, and we’ll be here every single morning to break it all down for you. You know, keeping up with this stuff is a full-time job. That's why we do it for you.
