Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Sidney Slon wrote the episode, with Jerry Devine credited for
- 0:04Speaker 1: the script. Eight tunnel workers have died after a sudden
- 0:08Speaker 1: loss of pressure in an intercity construction project, and Lamont
- 0:13Speaker 1: Cranston and Margo Lane are drawn into the investigation, one
- 0:17Speaker 1: that reaches beneath the city into the hazardous workings of
- 0:21Speaker 1: the tunnel itself. Bill Johnstone stars as Lamont Cranston, with
- 0:26Speaker 1: Marjorie Anderson as Margo Lane, and Kenny Delmar as Commissioner Weston.
- 0:33Speaker 1: From Mutual, with Blue Cole, this is The Shadow, Sandhog Murders,
- 0:38Speaker 1: broadcast November 26th, 1939, episode number 175 in the OTRR
- 0:40Speaker 1: library numbering. And now, our story begins.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
- 1:12Speaker 3: The shadow knows.
- 1:13Speaker 4: The shadow knows.
- 1:27Speaker 5: The Shadow, mysterious character who aids the forces of law
- 1:30Speaker 5: and order, is in reality Lamont Cranston, wealthy young man
- 1:34Speaker 5: about town. The Shadow uses his hypnotic power to cloud
- 1:37Speaker 5: men's minds so that they cannot see him. Cranston's friend
- 1:41Speaker 5: and companion, the lovely Margo Lane, is the only person
- 1:45Speaker 5: who knows to whom the unseen voice of the Shadow belongs.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Today's story, Sandhog Murders.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Sandhog Murders.
- 1:57Speaker 5: Deep under the river, knee-deep in glacial muck and slime,
- 2:01Speaker 5: you'll find them. The sandhogs, working under terrible pressure. Pressure
- 2:06Speaker 5: beating against their eardrums. Pressure forcing little nitrogen bubbles into
- 2:10Speaker 5: their bloodstreams. Pressure that causes death. Pressure that keeps the
- 2:14Speaker 5: river out of the tunnel that men are building under
- 2:16Speaker 5: the river.
- 2:17Speaker 6: One hundred feet under the river.
- 2:21Speaker 7: How far did we go on that last shot?
- 2:23Speaker 6: 27 inches, boss.
- 2:24Speaker 7: Tighten those jacks next to the shield. Okay, boss. Here,
- 2:29Speaker 7: Rodsky speaking. Time?
- 2:32Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:36Speaker 7: All right, men, that's all for today. Let's go. Hey, hey, Mr.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Pine.
- 2:41Speaker 7: Want to get left down here? I'm sorry, I was
- 2:44Speaker 7: so interested. You better come along and get in the
- 2:46Speaker 7: decompression chamber. Say, I... I hate to admit this, but
- 2:50Speaker 7: when I feel sick, I can hardly move my hand.
- 2:52Speaker 7: That's the same complaint from all visitors to our little
- 2:54Speaker 7: rabbit hole. Here, just give me your arm.
- 2:56Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 2:56Speaker 7: There we are. Come on, come on, into this decompression chamber.
- 3:00Speaker 7: Get the move on, all of you. I'm glad this
- 3:03Speaker 7: shift is over with. Quit your beefing. You get to
- 3:05Speaker 7: pay regular, don't you? Yeah, what do you think? Okay, decompress. Decompressing. Mr. Fine.
- 3:14Speaker 7: You know what could happen to you if you got
- 3:16Speaker 7: left behind? No. Ever been in a pressure tunnel before? No,
- 3:20Speaker 7: I haven't. Well, it ain't no picnic ground, mister. You
- 3:23Speaker 7: ever hear of the bends? That's some kind of sickness,
- 3:26Speaker 7: isn't it? It ain't no reducing exercise. I'll tell the
- 3:31Speaker 7: world it's sickness.
- 3:32Speaker 9: You see, working in these pressure tunnels pumps you full
- 3:36Speaker 9: of nitrogen bubbles. And if you wish to come out
- 3:38Speaker 9: of the pressure too fast... Those bubbles would stop your
- 3:41Speaker 9: heart quicker than a dollar watch.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Yeah, you gotta have the right kind of stomach to
- 3:44Speaker 6: stand it.
- 3:45Speaker 7: You know what would happen if we opened that door now?
- 3:48Speaker 3: Now what?
- 3:49Speaker 9: We'd all pop like punctured balloons. The pressure's got to
- 3:53Speaker 9: go down slowly. Just now we are working under 39
- 3:57Speaker 9: pounds of pressure per square inch.
- 3:59Speaker 7: Say, are you trying to scare me? Lay off me, Jack.
- 4:02Speaker 7: We had enough trouble lately.
- 4:06Speaker 6: All right.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Hey.
- 4:07Speaker 10: Hey.
- 4:07Speaker 7: Stop. Say what?
- 4:08Speaker 3: The pressure's dropping too fast.
- 4:10Speaker 7: Oh. It killed me.
- 4:11Speaker 3: It's time.
- 4:12Speaker 7: It's time to increase the pressure.
- 4:14Speaker 10: It's all right.
- 4:15Speaker 11: It's all right.
- 4:16Speaker 3: It's all right.
- 4:16Speaker 6: We're good.
- 4:17Speaker 2: It's all right.
- 4:18Speaker 7: It's all right.
- 4:27Speaker 11: Lamont, did you read the comic strips this morning?
- 4:33Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 4:34Speaker 11: They were very humorous.
- 4:36Speaker 12: Winnie Winkles in the hospital, Little Orphan Annie's house burned down,
- 4:40Speaker 12: and Andy Gump was hit by a truck.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 4:44Speaker 11: Lamont, I wonder why they call them funny papers. Say,
- 4:49Speaker 11: are you listening to me? Uh-huh. Listen, Mr.
- 4:51Speaker 12: Cranston, you haven't paid the slightest bit of attention to
- 4:54Speaker 12: anything I've said to you for the last hour.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Margo, but that horrible business in the new
- 4:59Speaker 3: intercity tunnel has been on my mind.
- 5:01Speaker 7: What business?
- 5:02Speaker 3: Eight men were killed in the decompression chamber yesterday.
- 5:04Speaker 11: Decompression chamber?
- 5:06Speaker 3: Something evidently went wrong. Pressure was lowered too suddenly and
- 5:09Speaker 3: they all died terrible deaths.
- 5:12Speaker 11: Well, how did it happen, Lamar?
- 5:13Speaker 3: Well, they don't know. Looks pretty funny. According to the
- 5:16Speaker 3: newspaper reports, the men working at the tunnel had been
- 5:19Speaker 3: expecting something to happen. There'd been several near accidents, and
- 5:22Speaker 3: the men were pretty jittery.
- 5:24Speaker 7: Hmm.
- 5:25Speaker 11: Well, you don't suppose that.
- 5:27Speaker 12: Oh, Lamont, I know that look in your eye, that
- 5:30Speaker 12: old crime detector look. You think that someone had something
- 5:33Speaker 12: to do with that accident.
- 5:34Speaker 3: I don't know anything about that model. The reason I'm
- 5:37Speaker 3: upset is that Pete Stockton is an old friend of mine.
- 5:41Speaker 3: I know just how he must feel to have eight
- 5:42Speaker 3: of his men killed working on his tunnel.
- 5:44Speaker 11: Pete Stockton?
- 5:45Speaker 3: Yes, the contractor. We went to school together. This inner
- 5:49Speaker 3: city tunnel is the first big job he's handled alone
- 5:51Speaker 3: since his father died about a year ago.
- 5:52Speaker 7: Oh, I see.
- 5:54Speaker 11: And, uh, you'd like to see him, wouldn't you?
- 5:57Speaker 3: Why, no, Margo, not today. We have a date. I
- 6:01Speaker 3: wouldn't think of it.
- 6:02Speaker 11: Oh, it's just the trouble you do think of it.
- 6:04Speaker 12: So I guess we might just as well see this
- 6:06Speaker 12: old schoolmate of yours.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Margo, you're wonderful. Oh.
- 6:19Speaker 4: But about those men who died in the decompression chamber, Pete,
- 6:22Speaker 4: how do you explain that? I can't explain it, Lamont.
- 6:26Speaker 4: There's been so much trouble around here on this job,
- 6:28Speaker 4: and then to have this terrible thing happen.
- 6:32Speaker 7: Well, it'll never happen to me again.
- 6:33Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 6:35Speaker 8: I'm quitting.
- 6:36Speaker 4: I never wanted this tunnel work. I was just doing
- 6:37Speaker 4: it for Dad's sake. Well, he's dead now. Joe Brantley
- 6:42Speaker 4: and other contractors agreed to take the whole thing off
- 6:43Speaker 4: my hands.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Quitting? Yes.
- 6:46Speaker 4: I couldn't stand another experience like this one. All those
- 6:50Speaker 4: men left wives, sweethearts, mothers. How can I ever repay them?
- 6:55Speaker 4: Make up to them for their loss.
- 6:56Speaker 7: Hey, Pete. The men want to talk to you.
- 6:59Speaker 6: They want to.
- 7:00Speaker 7: Go back to work. What, did you tell them that
- 7:03Speaker 7: Brantley was taking over Monday?
- 7:04Speaker 6: I told them, but they want to work for you,
- 7:08Speaker 6: not Brantley.
- 7:09Speaker 7: Well, I guess I'll have to tell them myself. Oh,
- 7:12Speaker 7: by the way, this is Pop Berkey.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Miss Lane.
- 7:15Speaker 6: How do you do?
- 7:15Speaker 13: Mr.
- 7:16Speaker 7: Cranston.
- 7:16Speaker 3: How do you do? Pop's an old-timer.
- 7:19Speaker 4: He and my dad broke into the business together. Well,
- 7:22Speaker 4: ask him anything you want to know about sand hogging.
- 7:24Speaker 5: I'll be back in a few minutes.
- 7:28Speaker 11: He's taking the whole thing pretty hard, isn't he?
- 7:31Speaker 7: Yes.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I'd like to help him, Margo. He's a swell guy.
- 7:37Speaker 6: First time you two have been around the tunnel in
- 7:39Speaker 6: the making?
- 7:40Speaker 3: What?
- 7:41Speaker 6: Oh, yes.
- 7:42Speaker 11: It's very interesting, isn't it? But is it necessary to
- 7:44Speaker 11: keep everything so greasy?
- 7:46Speaker 3: Mr.
- 7:46Speaker 7: Berkey.
- 7:47Speaker 3: What caused the accident in the decompression chamber? Are you
- 7:51Speaker 3: asking me what or who? So you think that the
- 7:54Speaker 3: accident wasn't exactly an accident?
- 7:57Speaker 6: I got my own ideas, but I'm not saying.
- 7:59Speaker 3: If you know anything, Mr. Berkey, you've got to tell me.
- 8:02Speaker 14: Well, now, supposing you were in the contracting business and
- 8:06Speaker 14: another contractor beat you out on a big job, an
- 8:09Speaker 14: important job. Wouldn't you try a couple of little things
- 8:13Speaker 14: to get the job back? You call the murder of
- 8:15Speaker 14: eight men little things?
- 8:17Speaker 6: Maybe you didn't want to kill the men in the
- 8:19Speaker 6: decompression chamber.
- 8:20Speaker 14: Maybe you just wanted to scare them so they'd be
- 8:23Speaker 14: afraid to work for your rifle.
- 8:25Speaker 11: But to take a chance with men's lives.
- 8:27Speaker 6: Lady, you don't know Joe Brandly.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Joe Brandly? The man who's taking over the contract from Stockton?
- 8:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 14: And a dirtier man would be impossible to find. He
- 8:37Speaker 14: wouldn't stop at anything. Looks like he won out pretty easy,
- 8:40Speaker 14: don't it? Pete's turning the contract over to him Monday.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Well, he hasn't won yet. Pop, Brookie, if you see
- 8:48Speaker 3: anything suspicious happening around here, I want you to call
- 8:51Speaker 3: me immediately. You understand? Right.
- 8:53Speaker 8: Come along, Margo.
- 8:53Speaker 6: We'll stop that fellow, Brandy.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Margo, I think the Shadow is going to pay a
- 9:02Speaker 3: call on a certain Mr. Brandy. Yeah.
- 9:12Speaker 7: No. Why should I be afraid?
- 9:15Speaker 10: What?
- 9:16Speaker 3: Stockton is turning the job over to me? What? At
- 9:20Speaker 3: the tunnel. When? Tonight. Yeah, well, let him try it.
- 9:26Speaker 3: I'll be at that tunnel and settle this thing once
- 9:28Speaker 3: and for all. Yeah.
- 9:30Speaker 7: Thanks for the information. Goodbye.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Thank you for the information, Mr. Brindley. What?
- 9:38Speaker 7: Who spoke?
- 9:39Speaker 3: I did, Mr. Brindley.
- 9:41Speaker 8: Who are you?
- 9:42Speaker 3: I am called the Shadow.
- 9:44Speaker 7: Where are you?
- 9:45Speaker 3: I can't see you.
- 9:46Speaker 10: I have willed it that you won't see me, Brandley.
- 9:49Speaker 10: I've cast a mist over your mind that makes me
- 9:51Speaker 10: invisible to your eyes.
- 9:53Speaker 3: What do you want of me? I would like to
- 9:55Speaker 3: know more about that phone conversation you just had. I
- 9:59Speaker 3: believe it was... I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Why should I
- 10:17Speaker 3: tell you? You'd better talk, Mr. Brantley. You haven't got
- 10:20Speaker 3: anything on me. That's true. I can't pin anything on
- 10:22Speaker 3: you just now. But let me warn you, Mr. Brantley.
- 10:26Speaker 10: The Shadow intends to prevent anyone from destroying the intercity tunnel.
- 11:16Speaker 15: Who's there?
- 11:32Speaker 3: Oh, it's.
- 11:36Speaker 7: You, Mr.
- 11:37Speaker 6: Cranston. I couldn't see you in the dark.
- 11:40Speaker 7: Yes, Pumperty.
- 11:41Speaker 11: Oh, Mom, thanks heaven you've come.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Margo! What are you doing here at the tunnel?
- 11:45Speaker 11: Well, I was waiting for you at your apartment, Lamar,
- 11:46Speaker 11: when Mr. Berkey called.
- 11:47Speaker 6: You asked me to call you if anything suspicious was
- 11:50Speaker 6: going on here.
- 11:50Speaker 11: And something suspicious is going on here.
- 11:52Speaker 6: There's someone down in the tunnel, Mr.
- 11:53Speaker 7: Cranston.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Yes, I know. I expected the killer would make his
- 11:57Speaker 3: move tonight with the tunnel deserted. But what are you
- 11:59Speaker 3: doing here, Margo?
- 12:00Speaker 12: Well, I don't know, but I didn't know how to
- 12:02Speaker 12: get in touch with you, so I thought I'd see
- 12:03Speaker 12: what I could do in your absence.
- 12:05Speaker 11: I left a note for you at your apartment, Lamont. Oh,
- 12:07Speaker 11: am I glad you've come.
- 12:09Speaker 12: The very idea of going down in that empty tunnel
- 12:11Speaker 12: gives me the cold chill.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Now, wait a minute, Margo. What were you expecting to
- 12:15Speaker 3: do down in the tunnel?
- 12:16Speaker 11: What was I expecting to do? Why, I was.
- 12:19Speaker 12: Well, now that you mention it, what was I expecting
- 12:22Speaker 12: to do?
- 12:23Speaker 3: Margo, we're dealing with a desperate man. Do you realize
- 12:27Speaker 3: what might be waiting for you down there? Mr.
- 12:29Speaker 6: Cranston is down in the tunnel, all right. The elevator
- 12:32Speaker 6: was at the bottom of the shaft when I came
- 12:34Speaker 6: back from dinner.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Berkey, what can I do to the tunnel? You could
- 12:37Speaker 3: set a time bomb and blow it to pieces. Well,
- 12:39Speaker 3: let's go. Where? We're going down into the tunnel, Margot,
- 12:41Speaker 3: on a manhunt. You better wait here. All alone? We
- 12:44Speaker 3: won't be going long.
- 12:45Speaker 11: Oh, not me. I'd rather go down the tunnel.
- 12:47Speaker 3: All right, then. Let's go. Now, where's the elevator, Berkey?
- 12:49Speaker 6: Over this way. I have some boots for you to wear.
- 12:51Speaker 6: A little muddy down below. All right.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Here, step in, Margot.
- 12:56Speaker 11: It's like going down into a coal mine, isn't it?
- 13:00Speaker 3: Margo, have you ever been down in a coal mine?
- 13:03Speaker 11: No, but this is the way I imagine it would be.
- 13:09Speaker 11: How deep is this?
- 13:10Speaker 2: What?
- 13:11Speaker 11: This elevator shaft.
- 13:12Speaker 6: About a hundred feet or so. It isn't very deep.
- 13:15Speaker 11: It's deep enough for me, thanks.
- 13:16Speaker 6: This will take us down to the tunnel.
- 13:35Speaker 3: We've arrived, Margo. That's all.
- 13:37Speaker 11: That's enough.
- 13:39Speaker 6: All right, pep out. Look out for the modern water.
- 13:42Speaker 6: Better walk on the plank.
- 13:43Speaker 8: Wait a minute.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Flash your light around, Berkey. No one here. All right,
- 13:50Speaker 3: lead on, Berkey.
- 13:54Speaker 11: Blooming looking place, isn't it?
- 13:56Speaker 8: It's scary, too.
- 13:58Speaker 6: You're just outside the tunnel now.
- 14:02Speaker 3: All right, step in, Margo.
- 14:03Speaker 11: Is this the tunnel?
- 14:04Speaker 6: Not yet, lady. This is the decompression chamber.
- 14:07Speaker 11: Oh, yes, it is. The what? I'm not going in
- 14:10Speaker 11: that thing.
- 14:10Speaker 3: It's the only way we can get into the tunnel, Margo.
- 14:12Speaker 11: Well, isn't that the place where those men were... Say,
- 14:15Speaker 11: I don't think I'm going to like this.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Come on, Margo. It's too late to back out now.
- 14:19Speaker 11: Well, I'll get in, but it's under protest.
- 14:22Speaker 7: Okay, Bertie.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Shut the door.
- 14:25Speaker 11: But they hit themselves.
- 14:28Speaker 6: That means that air is being pumped into this chamber.
- 14:31Speaker 6: We're going under pressure.
- 14:32Speaker 11: No, I don't like it.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Your ears hurt, huh?
- 14:35Speaker 6: The pressure.
- 14:36Speaker 3: You'll get used to it.
- 14:36Speaker 11: I don't intend to get used to it.
- 14:38Speaker 3: It's necessary, Margo. You see, we've got to adjust the
- 14:41Speaker 3: pressure in our bodies to the pressure in the tunnel
- 14:44Speaker 3: before we can enter it.
- 14:45Speaker 6: Well, pressure's even now. Ah, this is the tunnel. The
- 14:51Speaker 6: river is right overhead, ladies.
- 14:53Speaker 11: Oh, it's so dark.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Can you give us some light, Brookie? I wouldn't want
- 14:56Speaker 3: someone sneaking up behind me in the dark.
- 14:59Speaker 8: Yeah, that's better.
- 15:01Speaker 11: Goodness, it's muddy down here.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Now what, Mr. Berkey?
- 15:04Speaker 6: Now we'll take a look around.
- 15:08Speaker 11: Knowing you, Lamont, certainly gets me into the darndest places.
- 15:11Speaker 3: You're not sorry, are you?
- 15:12Speaker 11: No, but I do wish that... Hey, look.
- 15:15Speaker 14: I'm going back to the decompression chamber to see that
- 15:17Speaker 14: whoever it is don't try to slip out while you're
- 15:20Speaker 14: looking toward the center of the tunnel.
- 15:21Speaker 3: That's a good idea. We'll go on ahead. Come on, Margo.
- 15:25Speaker 11: Lamont, do you think that was such a good idea?
- 15:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:31Speaker 11: To guard the exit. Suppose whoever it is down here
- 15:34Speaker 11: overpowers him and locks us in.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Don't be silly, Margo. That couldn't happen. Berkey's no.
- 15:41Speaker 7: The lights!
- 15:41Speaker 6: They've gone out! Berkey!
- 15:43Speaker 16: Berkey, what's wrong?
- 15:44Speaker 11: Berkey!
- 15:46Speaker 7: Come on, Margo. We've got to get out of here.
- 15:48Speaker 11: I can't see anything, Lamont. I can't run in the dark.
- 15:50Speaker 7: Over this way, Margo.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Give me a hand. All right. Here's the door.
- 15:55Speaker 10: Let us out of here!
- 15:57Speaker 3: Berkey! Berkey!
- 15:58Speaker 7: Berkey!
- 16:01Speaker 11: I don't think he can help us now. Well, what
- 16:04Speaker 11: are we going to do?
- 16:05Speaker 3: I guess we'll have to wait until someone comes and
- 16:08Speaker 3: lets us out.
- 16:09Speaker 11: That's a pleasant thought. We're not really spending the night
- 16:12Speaker 11: in this place. What's that?
- 16:15Speaker 3: It sounds like a phone.
- 16:17Speaker 11: Down here?
- 16:17Speaker 3: Yeah, a foreman probably uses it to speak to his
- 16:20Speaker 3: boss above ground.
- 16:21Speaker 11: Well, where is it?
- 16:23Speaker 7: Well, the sound came from.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Oh, there it is. Hello? Well, Mr.
- 16:29Speaker 7: Cranston.
- 16:30Speaker 13: I guess this will teach you not to poke your
- 16:31Speaker 13: nose into something that doesn't concern you.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Who is this? Makes no difference now, Mr.
- 16:35Speaker 7: Cranston.
- 16:36Speaker 3: You're gonna die.
- 16:37Speaker 7: You hear me?
- 16:39Speaker 3: Die. Brantley, listen to me. I don't care about myself.
- 16:43Speaker 3: But surely you won't do this to a woman.
- 16:45Speaker 13: Sorry, I can't oblige you, but she's got to go, too.
- 16:49Speaker 13: Now I'm gonna step up the pressure in the tunnel
- 16:51Speaker 13: till your eardrums crack. Up, up it'll go until the
- 16:56Speaker 13: whole tunnel will explode just like a punctured balloon. The
- 16:59Speaker 13: river will rush in and you'll be drowned like rats
- 17:02Speaker 13: in a trap.
- 17:03Speaker 7: Hello?
- 17:04Speaker 3: Hello? Oh, he's hung up.
- 17:06Speaker 11: What is it, Lamont?
- 17:08Speaker 3: Oh, the lights.
- 17:08Speaker 11: The lights are on again.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Margot, I've got something to say to you, and it's
- 17:13Speaker 3: not going to be easy.
- 17:15Speaker 11: Yes, Lamont?
- 17:16Speaker 3: This is the end for us. We're going to die
- 17:20Speaker 3: here in this hole, Margot.
- 17:22Speaker 11: Lamont, I'm not afraid to die.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Margot.
- 17:28Speaker 3: All I can see is I... I know now that I...
- 17:32Speaker 3: I've been right about you.
- 17:33Speaker 11: Thanks, Lamont. Is it Brandy?
- 17:37Speaker 3: I don't know, Margo. I... I think so.
- 17:39Speaker 11: Lamont, what's that?
- 17:42Speaker 3: I'm afraid he's going to carry out his threat. He's
- 17:45Speaker 3: going to increase the pressure till it blows this tunnel
- 17:48Speaker 3: to bits.
- 17:49Speaker 11: Well, this is to be the last few minutes I'm
- 17:52Speaker 11: going to spend on this, Erick. going out with a
- 17:58Speaker 11: frown on my face.
- 17:59Speaker 3: And a very lovely face it is, too, Margo.
- 18:02Speaker 11: Why, Lamont, do.
- 18:03Speaker 12: You realize it's actually the first compliment you've ever paid me?
- 18:07Speaker 3: Well, that just proves what a stuffy guy I've been.
- 18:10Speaker 11: Oh, a pretty swell guy, if anyone should ask.
- 18:12Speaker 12: There's never been a dull moment on our merry-go-round.
- 18:17Speaker 3: We have had great times together, haven't we?
- 18:20Speaker 11: I wouldn't trade them for anything, Lamont.
- 18:23Speaker 7: Oh, Lamont.
- 18:25Speaker 11: Oh, my ears hurt. My head.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Yeah. I know, Margo. Pressure's going up very rapidly. I
- 18:33Speaker 3: guess he wants to finish his office in a hurry.
- 18:36Speaker 11: Oh, it's so warm and damp down here.
- 18:40Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Pressure must be up pretty high now.
- 18:44Speaker 7: We won't have long to wait.
- 18:46Speaker 11: The air.
- 18:48Speaker 11: The air's getting so misty.
- 18:51Speaker 10: Margo.
- 18:52Speaker 3: What is it, Lamont?
- 18:54Speaker 7: Margo. Margo.
- 18:57Speaker 4: The minute that weak part of the tunnel up there,
- 19:00Speaker 4: the part that hasn't been reinforced, is going to give way.
- 19:04Speaker 7: The river's going to rush in.
- 19:06Speaker 3: If we climb up this framework here, we'll be able
- 19:11Speaker 3: to hold out longer.
- 19:13Speaker 11: What difference will that make?
- 19:16Speaker 3: I don't know, Margo, but come on.
- 19:19Speaker 7: Let's climb.
- 19:20Speaker 11: All right, Lamont. If it'll make me any happier.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Here.
- 19:25Speaker 7: Give me your hand.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Here.
- 19:26Speaker 7: I'll help you.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Come on.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Come on, help!
- 19:33Speaker 15: Help us!
- 19:34Speaker 3: Help us!
- 19:35Speaker 15: There it goes!
- 19:45Speaker 17: Well, Commissioner Weston, we pumped all the water out of
- 19:47Speaker 17: the tunnel. Found no trace of Margo or Lamont's body.
- 19:52Speaker 17: They must have been washed into the river.
- 19:54Speaker 8: Yeah. You know, they were both personal friends of mine, too.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Yes. Yes, I know.
- 19:59Speaker 17: Well, that's the way it goes. Lamont was trying to
- 20:04Speaker 17: help me. I was going to give up the whole job, Commissioner,
- 20:07Speaker 17: but now I'm going ahead with it. If he thought
- 20:10Speaker 17: that much of me, I.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Well.
- 20:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I understand.
- 20:15Speaker 8: Well, now tell me about this Pop Berkey.
- 20:17Speaker 17: Well, it's simple enough. I found Pop myself. He was
- 20:20Speaker 17: just outside the tunnel, unconscious from a blow on his head.
- 20:22Speaker 8: How long have you known him?
- 20:23Speaker 7: He and my dad broke into sand hogging together.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Later, when a tunnel accident made Berkey unfit to work underground,
- 20:29Speaker 4: my dad always found a.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Job for him up above.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Ah.
- 20:32Speaker 7: And, well, I sort of followed in dad's footsteps. Ah? Well,
- 20:35Speaker 7: this whole business proves one thing.
- 20:37Speaker 16: That so-called accident in the tunnel where the eight men
- 20:39Speaker 16: were killed was no accident. I'll have my men stationed
- 20:42Speaker 16: at the tunnel tomorrow.
- 20:43Speaker 8: When you go back to work.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Oh, I'd appreciate it, Commissioner Weston.
- 20:45Speaker 8: That's all right. You know, I'm going to miss that
- 20:49Speaker 8: fellow Cranston.
- 20:50Speaker 16: Stockton, do you mind if I stay here a while
- 20:59Speaker 16: and look this room over?
- 21:00Speaker 4: No, not at all, Commissioner Weston. I've got to go
- 21:02Speaker 4: down below in the tunnel and talk to the men.
- 21:04Speaker 4: If anything happens this time... Nothing's going to happen, Mr.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Stockton.
- 21:07Speaker 8: Not while I'm here. Good luck, son.
- 21:09Speaker 11: Good luck, Mr.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Stockton. Yeah, thanks. Commissioner Weston.
- 21:17Speaker 7: Huh?
- 21:17Speaker 3: What? It's the Shadow, Commissioner.
- 21:19Speaker 8: The Shadow. Well, my friend, what are you doing here?
- 21:22Speaker 3: I'm here to help you catch the murderer. That's what
- 21:25Speaker 3: you're here for, isn't it?
- 21:25Speaker 7: Yeah, sure, sure. But who is he?
- 21:27Speaker 3: Softly, Commissioner, softly. You wouldn't want to scare our murderer away,
- 21:31Speaker 3: would you?
- 21:32Speaker 8: Is he here?
- 21:32Speaker 3: Very close now. In just a moment, he'll come into
- 21:35Speaker 3: this room. This is what he's been waiting for.
- 21:39Speaker 10: You see, the lives of the men in the tunnel
- 21:41Speaker 10: depend on the proper functioning of the pump machinery here.
- 21:46Speaker 10: The murderer will attempt to destroy the pump and kill
- 21:48Speaker 10: the men down in the tunnel. This is to be
- 21:51Speaker 10: his final job. For today, for the first time, Peter
- 21:56Speaker 10: Stockton is down below.
- 21:58Speaker 8: Well, he won't get away with it.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Quiet, Commissioner. I think this is our man now. Quick,
- 22:03Speaker 3: hide behind the machinery.
- 22:04Speaker 7: Yeah, all right. Here it is.
- 22:08Speaker 15: The main induction valve.
- 22:21Speaker 6: Now, Mr. Stockton, you're going to pay for what your
- 22:24Speaker 6: father did to me.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Listen, stop him.
- 22:26Speaker 7: I'll get him. I'll try and stop him. I'll chop
- 22:30Speaker 7: you all right.
- 22:32Speaker 8: Well, let's see who it is. Why, it's Pop Berkey.
- 22:38Speaker 8: I've killed old Pop Berkey.
- 22:39Speaker 3: No, Commissioner. He'll live to pay for his crimes.
- 22:42Speaker 15: Come in.
- 22:51Speaker 11: Hello, Commissioner. We've come to be witnesses.
- 22:53Speaker 7: Now, wait. What?
- 22:54Speaker 8: Cranston and you, Miss Lane, I thought you were.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Yes, I know, Commissioner, but.
- 22:59Speaker 11: Well, aren't you glad to see us?
- 23:00Speaker 8: Oh, of course, of course.
- 23:02Speaker 16: But how did you get out? Where have you been?
- 23:03Speaker 16: You were in the tunnel, weren't you? One question at
- 23:05Speaker 16: a time, Commissioner. We were in the tunnel, all right,
- 23:07Speaker 16: but we escaped.
- 23:09Speaker 7: Escaped?
- 23:09Speaker 12: Yes, we climbed to the top of the tunnel just
- 23:11Speaker 12: before the blow-off came.
- 23:12Speaker 8: We climbed.
- 23:13Speaker 11: There was an air pocket. A very wonderful air pocket.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Don't forget the details, Margo.
- 23:17Speaker 13: Oh, yes.
- 23:17Speaker 11: I ruined a perfectly good pair of stockings.
- 23:20Speaker 16: Oh, that's... But how did you get out?
- 23:21Speaker 3: Through the escape chamber.
- 23:22Speaker 16: Berkey had forgotten all about that.
- 23:24Speaker 11: Ah, but Lamont hadn't. He found it, didn't you, Lamont?
- 23:27Speaker 11: Right at the top of the tunnel.
- 23:29Speaker 12: Let me tell you something, Commissioner. If you ever get
- 23:31Speaker 12: stuck in a tunnel, have Lamont along.
- 23:33Speaker 7: Well, I still don't understand.
- 23:35Speaker 3: What about Berkey?
- 23:36Speaker 16: He confessed everything last night. Seems he hated Stockton because
- 23:39Speaker 16: he thought Stockton's father was responsible for his accidents. Also,
- 23:42Speaker 16: because Stockton's father married the woman he loved. Couldn't get
- 23:46Speaker 16: even with his old man, so he was going to
- 23:48Speaker 16: take it out on the son. Then he tried to
- 23:50Speaker 16: implicate Brandy to shield himself.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Well, I guess you've got all the evidence you need, Commissioner,
- 23:53Speaker 3: so Marco and I will be running along.
- 23:55Speaker 8: Wait a minute. Wait a minute.
- 23:56Speaker 16: I'm not through with you two yet. Why didn't you
- 23:59Speaker 16: let people know that you were safe? Because, Commissioner, we
- 24:02Speaker 16: couldn't resist satisfying a lifelong ambition.
- 24:04Speaker 8: What's that?
- 24:05Speaker 3: Reading our own obituaries.
- 24:56Speaker 7: The weed of crime.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Bears bitter fruit. Crime does not pay. The Shadow knows.
- 25:32Speaker 1: We leave the Shadow with Sandhog Murders. Good night, and
- 25:35Speaker 1: thank you for joining us.
