- 1:25that's it facebook will never ask you again there we go right so we are starting
- 1:30a three-part episodes or series called.
- 1:35Let me just get my sheet up what's it gonna be called tonight how to set up
- 1:38a massage therapy Therapy Business, in which we're going to have a panel of
- 1:41experienced sports massage therapists and sports therapists who are going to
- 1:44share their experience and their tips on how to set up a sports massage clinic.
- 1:49Part one, very shortly, is going to be setting up at your home,
- 1:53be it in a garage, a garden, or a room with a house.
- 1:57And then next week, in what will be episode 187, it's going to be looking at
- 2:01setting up a clinic in a gym or some kind of similar enterprise,
- 2:05basically kind of renting or someone and then part three in a couple of weeks
- 2:08or episode 188 if you listen to the podcast.
- 2:11He's going to be looking at setting up as a massage therapist or a sports therapist
- 2:16in a mobile practice or concentrating on event work.
- 2:21So it's a series of episodes which we've had lots of requests for.
- 2:24So I'm really pleased that we're going to be getting this out there now.
- 2:27And if you are an STA member, if you're listening and you like the idea of being
- 2:33on the panel, then what you can do is just email me, matt.st.co.uk.
- 2:38Obviously, we can't go back in time. You can't be on tonight's show. Impossible.
- 2:41But if you're listening before February next week, the 27th,
- 2:47then you could be in the episode about working at a gym.
- 2:51Or if you're free on March 5th, then you could be in the episode looking at
- 2:55mobile work and event work.
- 2:57OK, so feel free to email me if you want to be on the panel.
- 2:59It'll give you an idea tonight about what we expect of you, which is very little, really.
- 3:04Before we start, I must give a massive thank you to last week's guest,
- 3:08Claire Boucher, who joined us for episode 185
- 3:11in the episode entitled or a columba
- 3:14i've realized all my life now i'll be saying thracolumba thinking sounds
- 3:18a bit like barack obama but thracolumba it's how i have
- 3:21said it and no one's picked me up on it maybe because i'm six
- 3:23foot six i don't know but apparently it's not apparently it's thoracolumba i
- 3:27always thought like thoracic and i don't know so anyway it was
- 3:30entitled thoracolumba and fascia and
- 3:33lower back pain claire should know because she's a lecturer of sports
- 3:36therapy and rehabilitation at canterbury christ church at university and a
- 3:38phd researcher in the topic at the university of kent so i did not try and persuade
- 3:43her that my method of pronouncing it was correct that would be ridiculous mansplaining
- 3:47to a phd researcher and anyway but it is a fascinating episode a really good
- 3:51delve into the relationship between fascia structure and lower back pain as
- 3:54well as an insider's look into the interpretation.
- 3:56Of ultrasound with regards to looking at fascia so
- 3:59i do encourage you obviously it's available as always on your
- 4:02favorite podcast app if you want to watch it
- 4:05visually then you can go to youtube you and also you can
- 4:08either listen to it or watch it at the sports therapy
- 4:11association website which is thesta.co.uk right
- 4:16there we go back to tonight's episode which
- 4:20i'm very happy to say i've got a co-host tonight so you're not gonna have to
- 4:23listen to my voice for the next hour asking ridiculous questions i'm delighted
- 4:26to be joined very shortly by the wonderful nikki mansfield of mansfield massage
- 4:29and movement and a lot of you will also know her through organizing great cpd
- 4:34workshops shops and working with Born to Move, as well as probably other reasons.
- 4:38She's maybe a regular down-year local, depending on what part of the world you
- 4:41live in. But yeah, many reasons where you might know our Nikki.
- 4:44So without further ado then, sit back. If you are in the live lounge,
- 4:48then obviously you're welcome to ask questions throughout and take advantage
- 4:51of the great experience we've got here.
- 4:53But I shall now bring up co-host Nikki Mansfield and also the STA panel for tonight.
- 5:00Music.
- 5:17Fantastic so thanks for joining us the first thing to do
- 5:19really first of all just want to say thank you for giving up your time for joining
- 5:22us and and sharing your experience i know it's going to be fascinating through
- 5:26our pre-chat before we went live and you've all got wonderful
- 5:28individual stories and successes and which
- 5:31we're going to talk about shortly but the first thing guests really is for
- 5:34our listeners to know and obviously tonight's show people listen
- 5:37to podcasts thank you as always it's going to be quite visual okay our
- 5:40guests on the panel are going to be sharing photos of before and
- 5:43after shots of their magnificent creations whether it's a
- 5:46garage conversion or or shed in the garden or
- 5:49it might be a room that's been converted a pop-up room or something that
- 5:52appears in the house so you're listening to podcasts you're thinking oh
- 5:55this is gonna be great to get maximum value out of
- 5:58it i would recommend that you do halt now go to youtube sports association youtube
- 6:03channel and watch it watch the recording because it's going to be quite visuals
- 6:07we'll try and describe what's on the screen but i really recommend that you
- 6:10do if possible watch it on youtube so there we go right let's start with my
- 6:14wonderful co-host co-host,
- 6:17nikki how are you i'm really good thank you matt really good wonderful sorry
- 6:21about the dig at your alcohol i shouldn't have brought that up should i it's
- 6:24a bit of a bad way to introduce you.
- 6:27Again podcast people you will appreciate while we're smiling here not only she got no i didn't go,
- 6:33smiling yeah thanks healthy glow
- 6:39it is very healthy very healthy
- 6:43you always look very very well um and it's it's great
- 6:46to get to know you even more now you're doing cpd hosting and doing so much
- 6:49more and in the limelight everywhere so how's that all going for you because
- 6:53not only you're a therapist magnifique you're also hosting lots of great courses
- 6:57i am really enjoying the hosting i i mean i enjoy as we all do sorry your shoes
- 7:02coming off no you fly sit back.
- 7:06I'm on a stool uh yes
- 7:10i'm really enjoying the hosting i i love looking after people i kind of came
- 7:14to terms with that a year or so ago as actually that is something that is very
- 7:18very important to me and so i want to to incorporate that into what i do you
- 7:23know most of us do because because we squeeze people and have them feel better.
- 7:27But the hosting of the courses is fantastic.
- 7:30We've got another one this weekend. I was only just on a course last weekend.
- 7:35So March and April should be a little bit less busy in that way.
- 7:39Of course, that's just preparing for the rest of them. I'm very,
- 7:42very fortunate to be hosting some wonderful educators, which you're all familiar with.
- 7:48I do. I feel like a very happy and lucky little people squeezer.
- 7:52There you go. That's lovely to hear. And if people want details of all this,
- 7:55actually, where's the best place? Is it website or follow you on particular social media?
- 8:00So on social media, my personal account is Soft Tissue Nikki.
- 8:04So at Soft Tissue Nikki on Instagram. I'm just Nikki Mansfield on Facebook.
- 8:08And for the CPD specifically, it's at MMMTherapy underscore training.
- 8:16Fantastic. If you listen to podcasts, then Nikki just pointed to her T-shirt
- 8:20logo, which was classic podcast material.
- 8:21So again go to youtube if you want the whole experience always
- 8:24work on youtube so anyway thank you
- 8:28very much joining and i'm really glad you did join us because we're talking about a massage
- 8:31at home which you've got massive experience in which we'll talk about shortly
- 8:34but also i've never i'm in hands up i have never
- 8:37treated anybody from my home it's
- 8:40crazy no not professionally not even when you
- 8:42start not even when you start you first kicked off and first qualified no
- 8:46because i've always i'm from kind of a gym background so
- 8:49i started massage after being personal trainer and
- 8:52a sports and conditioning coach so I was always in a gym I always
- 8:55had access to a room and in fact my family my brother started before me I was
- 8:59kind of bend him upstairs in the gym and he was mending downstairs in the clinic
- 9:03so we were bending and mending and it worked very well but then eventually I
- 9:06was like I want to start mending them as well so that's how I got into sports
- 9:09therapy I already had a clinic waiting for me so I'm very lucky easy easy for me.
- 9:13So, yeah, it's been really cool that you're here to ask our panel questions,
- 9:16talking of which, in no particular order, we're going to introduce you guys
- 9:19to who else is on the panel.
- 9:21So let's go to Hannah. Hannah Tabran. Is that pronunciation OK?
- 9:24Close enough. It's fine. It's a sensible name. It's easy. It's fine.
- 9:28Unlike other people in here. So, yeah, where are you in the world and what's
- 9:32your experience? What do you do?
- 9:33So I am on the Norfolk-Suffolk border and I am a level four sports massage therapist.
- 9:38Therapist and for the last year and
- 9:41a bit I've been working from a converted shed in my back
- 9:44garden which my husband insists should be called a
- 9:47log cabin and I'm like no it is a shed dear it
- 9:50is a shed with ideas above its station but it's a shed but it's
- 9:53very nice it's great I really love working here love working
- 9:56in my shed it's quiet and there are no children we're
- 10:00gonna photo oh straight away we're going to the benefits of maybe yeah
- 10:03having a shed instead of in the house straight away that's the
- 10:06sort of thing we're going to touch into so great thanks for joining much joining us very
- 10:09much indeed and let's go again in no particular
- 10:12order to our joe holloway ah sadly can't.
- 10:15Be with us tonight because we couldn't get sound sorted out sorry
- 10:18joe but maybe you're in the audience if you are
- 10:20around joining the audience to make sure you share your information in
- 10:24there joe if you are watching um let's go to louise hi yay
- 10:28you got it right only taken like
- 10:31like three years but anyway no it's fine
- 10:34yeah hi everyone sorry I'm Louise Asher sports
- 10:37therapist and personal trainer as well at the
- 10:40moment so I qualified as a
- 10:43sports therapist BSc honours at the University of
- 10:46Kent back in 2005 that seems
- 10:50like a long time ago I know I look so young right yes yes and then I worked
- 10:56six years of doing that football clubs and as a mobile therapist up until 2011
- 11:02when my second child was born and it didn't really work with the children so I.
- 11:07Completely went separately, something else, and then came back to this in 2018
- 11:12and haven't looked back, basically.
- 11:15So I now work from home, but I don't have a fancy shed or garage conversion
- 11:21or studio in the back garden.
- 11:23I have a pop-up clinic in my front room of my house.
- 11:27So it's a day room when it's not a clinic.
- 11:30And then when it's clinic, it's the clinic for
- 11:34sports therapy therapy work and exercise rehab that's
- 11:37amazing because i remember he's telling me it was a combat room and all i'm
- 11:40thinking of probably because of my age you know a few other people are nodding
- 11:42i'm just imagining one of those pop-up hooves where you can cut out so that
- 11:46you've got a couch and if you pull on a little bit of pain it starts moving
- 11:51that would be cool that would be cool if it was that easy.
- 11:59Thanks very much and what part of the country did you say you're in oh sorry
- 12:02yeah i mean sorry Sorry, Tadworth by Epsom Downs, home of the racing derby.
- 12:08There you go. Brilliant. Well, thanks for joining us, Louise.
- 12:11And then Steve, waiting patiently there. Hey, Steve, how are you doing?
- 12:14Not bad at all, thank you. Tell us about yourself and your setup.
- 12:17Well, it's really interesting. I'm just on the road from Hannah,
- 12:20just outside Norwich, and in a place called Blowfield.
- 12:25You really are just down the road. It's really interesting, Louise.
- 12:29I used to live in Burr Heath.
- 12:31Oh, wow. Wow, that's where I am, Per Heath more or less. So just down the road. Amazing.
- 12:38I've been up in Norfolk for, or getting on for good, 15 years now.
- 12:44And I sort of thought about where I would sort of start business.
- 12:49I looked outside, sort of renting somewhere, and the money that people wanted
- 12:57was absolutely astronomical.
- 12:59So I thought, right, I'm going to start in a spare bedroom.
- 13:02Business really started to grow and grow
- 13:06tremendously to the interesting thing
- 13:09people would be coming up when they heard what we were doing and they were knocking
- 13:13on the front door I thought this has got to change our garage head was not really
- 13:19fit for purpose and looking at business rates and everything else we decided to.
- 13:28Knocked down the garage and to get a i think
- 13:31i'm going to word this very carefully that a polypus built shed
- 13:35for the purpose of treatment and activities
- 13:39built and it's
- 13:43actually fantastic i could not be happier well i
- 13:47mean so there seems to be a common theme here i mean you guys are just maybe
- 13:49naturally upbeat but it seems you'll seem really happy
- 13:52with your setup is that fair to say yeah yeah
- 13:56all works for you that's great which is something we want to
- 13:58talk about tonight because obviously this episode is all about how to set
- 14:01up your business and at home so whether
- 14:04it be a garage or in a room or in a
- 14:07purpose-built kind of shed or you want to call it a log cabin according
- 14:10to somebody's other half um in the garden but yeah
- 14:13but the fact is our our expert experts here
- 14:16we call you experts our experts here all happy so something's gone
- 14:18right but i'm sure it was never plain sailing and hopefully we'll
- 14:21cover some of those as well i just want to have a little shout
- 14:24shout out to people who have joined us live first of all we got birthday celebrations
- 14:27for brian huxley who's a regular listener normally one of
- 14:30the first to the doors happy birthday brian thanks very much for joining us
- 14:33many happy returns also penny from
- 14:36soma sports master's therapy was on the show a couple of weeks ago she actually
- 14:41forsook forsook forsake she gave up a cpd opportunity to join us tonight live
- 14:47as well so thanks danny yeah bless you thank you very much i hope we don't all
- 14:49let you down um compared what you did think you're going to do um yeah so thanks
- 14:53and obviously Obviously, everybody who's joined us live as well.
- 14:55Cecily Hislop is here as well. Thank you, Glenn Murphy, John W.
- 14:59And everyone else who's in the room. Oh, Joe H., nice to see you again.
- 15:02And so Joe Hill is here as well in spirit.
- 15:05So thank you. And Natalie S. says, evening, I able to join, able to join live for once. So great.
- 15:10Right, let's get down to business. You missed the bit that's still there.
- 15:15Nicky's great. You've got to read that one out as well. Oh, sorry. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:21Newsflash from here, from Penny at Stemmersports Master's Therapy. Nikki
- 15:24is great I can't wait there you go thank you
- 15:29for that right so yeah let's get out of business we are it's going to be personal
- 15:33experience so before we do that before we start delving into your own personal
- 15:38setup are there any kind of overall bits of advice or things you'd like to say
- 15:44about just working at home as opposed to working.
- 15:48In a gym or for somebody else what are some of the overall advantages or
- 15:51maybe difficulties however you want to start off conversation well
- 15:55i could start so i used to work in a
- 15:58clinic so i used to pay pay rent i guess
- 16:01to the clinic and get half the money of what i
- 16:03was doing all the hard work for so working from home you
- 16:07have less expenditure and you get
- 16:10your you've got more flexibility with your hours as well so there's
- 16:13a couple of advantages already the difficulty
- 16:17i have have because it is in my actual house is when
- 16:20my kids are coming in from school and I've got a client in
- 16:23the house so that can be a bit
- 16:26awkward at times that's that's generally the main thing
- 16:29or like my partner can't get dinner ready because I'm
- 16:32working in the front room and it just has
- 16:35to all be delayed or you know that's the
- 16:38only difficult thing because I don't have a like a separate room it's
- 16:41quite all open plan but I use wall dividers which
- 16:44I show when I share my the screen you can see that how
- 16:47it gets set away from everybody else but you can still
- 16:49hear the background noise but it's still
- 16:52quite private anyway so yeah how long have you
- 16:55had that set up since covid so really
- 16:59when once covid was done and we were able to see people again face to face that's
- 17:04when i decided that actually do you know what i can do this from home so it's
- 17:08much much better and yeah okay so i've been doing it so when the covid i don't know 20.
- 17:162021 i started doing it from home yeah yeah
- 17:19but in the first time first instance when we're
- 17:22doing the covid times and we were allowed to work it was
- 17:26like really restricted though i had like loads of gaps between
- 17:29people and yeah i had
- 17:32no i'm interested louise you mentioned that it's
- 17:35cheaper obviously than working for ploy do you think some people
- 17:38who are struggling because let's face it we're all living in times where money
- 17:41is getting tight shopping prices everything all
- 17:44the bills are going up massively and we can't keep up in terms of raising prices
- 17:48to meet you know the increase everything else do you think some people maybe
- 17:52don't necessarily think about working from home when it should be an option
- 17:56they consider do you think it could be a good step for somebody rather than
- 17:59just going i can't do this anymore would it be a viable step yeah definitely
- 18:01yeah Yeah, I'd say definitely.
- 18:04I think people overestimate how difficult it would be.
- 18:07A lot of people think there'll be a problem with insurance and there's plenty
- 18:10of insurance companies that insure you.
- 18:12They assume there's some kind of council restrictions or there's very few areas
- 18:16where in some counties or districts
- 18:20you have to get a licence to practice massage, but not most of them.
- 18:23And usually you can be exempt if you're a member of a professional association.
- 18:28I know that that's true in an awful lot of the London boroughs.
- 18:31I think people assume that it will be too difficult and too prohibitive.
- 18:36And then also, you know, if I'm fortunate, I live alone. So I'm the one who
- 18:40makes all the decisions in my house.
- 18:41And it did make it easier for things like COVID, because I used to operate out
- 18:45of my front room, which was dedicated in my old house.
- 18:49So that's the only thing that ever went on in there. but when
- 18:52they raised the rule that said you can't have clients if
- 18:56it's a shared entrance with the rest of your family we said
- 18:58that that wasn't that wasn't an issue for me but
- 19:01they are things to consider the things we learned from covid i
- 19:04think that would be good things to do in your
- 19:07business anyway to keep them a little bit separate um and
- 19:10in case anything like that ever happens again so i mentioned
- 19:13was another a separate entrance and things like that
- 19:16but it isn't as prohibitive as a lot of people think what
- 19:19about what about that topic of insurance you mentioned that and this
- 19:22is for everybody as well i mean i don't know whether you want to disclose how
- 19:24much you pay but i mean some most people have probably haven't
- 19:27got a clue they probably think it's quite astronomical but i approached balans
- 19:31when i thought and i did
- 19:34it again actually recently as well because i was changing insurer because
- 19:37one of them stopped doing doing it and i spoke
- 19:40to balans because i was going to get staff in i ended up getting
- 19:43staff at my other clinic in the gym i had to see if i could change my insurance
- 19:47to to have business visit they're called business visitors one at a time you
- 19:50tell them that you've got one at a time you have some insurance companies say
- 19:54you've got a limit so you can only have up to 10 single business visitors a
- 19:58day some insurance companies say three.
- 20:01Depends what they're going to be do what access they've got to the rest of the
- 20:04house so you can if you've got lockable doors that really really helps.
- 20:08So then you have clauses in your insurance so for example in my old house different
- 20:13here because because it's a locked, separate place, but in my old house,
- 20:17whilst it was the first room when you walked in,
- 20:21they had free reign of the house.
- 20:23You know, they could knock me out, punch me, punch me lights out and nick everything.
- 20:26So you weren't covered for cash losses or anything from not being broken into. Right.
- 20:33But it's really reasonable. Bail-ins were quoting like 1,200, 1,400 quid.
- 20:39And my insurance costs 245 pounds. My buildings, home and contents,
- 20:44including the business stuff, it's less than 250 quid a year.
- 20:49And it was in my old place with me working in the living room.
- 20:52And it is now with me in a separate garage.
- 20:54You've just got to answer the questions correctly on the comparison websites.
- 20:58Websites and then when you go through to your insurer
- 21:02make sure that all of those questions because sometimes there's
- 21:04a little bit of where they haven't crossed over necessarily between
- 21:07one and another website and then i just made sure
- 21:10i go on the chat so web chat and i just got all my questions
- 21:13answered so you have to say what category you're operating as
- 21:16and i would said healthcare and the
- 21:19man said oh can you tell me what you do and i
- 21:22explained it and he went now that's into a beauty so there's like a bit of me kind
- 21:24of went no it's really not he says
- 21:27no he said it is that's what i've got he said i've got a list of
- 21:30health care here and massage therapist is underneath there he said
- 21:34this not health care beauty he said if it's health care
- 21:36we can't insure you i was like oh i'm definitely that's an
- 21:42interesting one yeah where's we got
- 21:44of insurers people how is that shock you that nikki is paying
- 21:47that amount are you paying a lot more or is that don't think mine all
- 21:50i didn't even go on a price comparison website i just got.
- 21:53In touch with the people that do our home insurance and said i'm building
- 21:56a garden office i'm going to have clients coming is that
- 21:59okay and again i went through on the web chat and there were lots of questions about
- 22:02are they going to be accessing the house is there a
- 22:05separate entrance yeah how many people are going to be there and
- 22:07they were like yeah that's fine carry on i don't think my insurance
- 22:10actually went through in premium yeah it's the same i didn't
- 22:13think it did i mean you know it's a couple of years
- 22:16ago and i have trouble remembering what happened two minutes ago but
- 22:19yeah if it did it was negligible it was enough that
- 22:22i was like yeah fine not even gonna yeah it was
- 22:25not and the mortgage again i you know if you have a mortgage
- 22:28certainly i had to speak to the mortgage mortgage company sorry
- 22:31and they were like yeah fine crack on that's another thing that
- 22:34scares people because i've only just recently bought this house in the last few
- 22:37years i had to make sure that it was okay for business
- 22:39use and it turns out that the vast majority.
- 22:42Of any standard mortgage allows up to
- 22:45anything between 50 and 80 percent of your square footage to be used for business
- 22:51without having to tell them and only if it surpasses that do you have to tell
- 22:55them you have to have a change of use and then the mortgage might be they might
- 22:59not want to give you that mortgage but it's a huge huge allowance just the standard.
- 23:04It was really, for me, it was just a matter of going on web chats for the companies
- 23:07and saying, look, I'm planning on doing this.
- 23:10Is it OK? Can I do this? And it was literally an afternoon's work and it was fine.
- 23:15It was just one of those things you want to have that conversation,
- 23:17obviously, before you start digging out foundations or knocking down walls. But, yeah, it was fine.
- 23:23Steve, you've been working from home for 14 years, is it or something like that?
- 23:28A long time. So with regards to insurance and overheads, have things changed
- 23:33or has it always been fairly accessible?
- 23:35I think ours is about £500 a year, so not too bad at all.
- 23:41I think one of the big things that I think I found important is to have a separate input for patients.
- 23:50And I think when you're dealing with people, you know, people could,
- 23:55you know, neighbours could ask a few questions.
- 23:57It'll be a bit funny but the fact is it's separate and the
- 24:00neighbors know what you're doing the people know what
- 24:02you do and you are very professional
- 24:06in everything that you say and do i think
- 24:10that's the the most important thing to to start
- 24:13with and and then as you
- 24:16go on from there i think one of the big things that you start is about
- 24:19building positive relationships with people and i think think one of the bigger
- 24:24things is that when people see if you people see what you do and people see
- 24:30that you care and people say hide out there they will come back to you 10 times out of 10.
- 24:38Fantastic great advice and i think especially like
- 24:42steve do you find like you live in it you're in quite a small
- 24:44community like i am because i'm a little village well you become known
- 24:48in the village as like oh i've hurt my back i'm going to go and
- 24:50see this person you become like the village
- 24:53massage lady stroke man yes i mean i
- 24:56think one of the things i really one of
- 24:59the things i i have um a german shepherd and i
- 25:02love sort of chilling out just taking him for a walk and i
- 25:06always remember one day this this lady
- 25:09she was on the bike on the other side of the road and
- 25:13and she suddenly she suddenly comes towards me and
- 25:16she said you're oh Steve aren't you and she said
- 25:19I've hurt my shoulder and she she is practically
- 25:22starting to strip off and and I said well listen please listen you give me a
- 25:27ring and make an appointment and come and see me um I think I think the big
- 25:32thing that that's that's community and I think when when you sort of write or
- 25:37you write something for on the little community magazines.
- 25:42That's it's just amazing the work that you can get from there you know people
- 25:46want us to know about bad bags you know people today i think they don't want
- 25:51medication they want treatment,
- 25:54so here's a question look do you think we're talking about how great it is to
- 25:57work at home does it depend is it a good idea if you're in a little community
- 26:02where your advertising is done whilst you're walking the dog does that mean
- 26:05that maybe setting up yourself in clinic in the middle of somewhere busy in
- 26:08London where is that going to present more,
- 26:12difficulties and maybe not give it to you on a plate because it's going to be
- 26:15tricky to get to known or what do you think?
- 26:17I think I've had enough of London. I think you know it's a different community.
- 26:24I think you know we got off the train at Liverpool Street I think I'll change
- 26:29you know I'll head back towards a country.
- 26:32I'll learn to chill out and I think that's the thing and a lot of my patients.
- 26:37They are very much of that nature but is part
- 26:40of the success of working at home being in a village being in
- 26:43a town do you think that's part of it anywhere i am i still have to advertise
- 26:48as much as i ever did there's there's i've got i'm in a street with 24 houses
- 26:53not actually one of them has been a client i mean probably probably 30 percent
- 27:00of my clients are from my same town,
- 27:02but when people drive in from all over so there is
- 27:06reach but i'd say you're probably faced
- 27:09with the same kind of marketing challenges as anywhere else like
- 27:11in the gym you got some access to some clients there so you don't get that kind
- 27:17of benefit i think it depends on what your niche is as well i mean obviously
- 27:23if you are going really heavily on the like treating of the athletes and the
- 27:26sports side but then probably being in a gym is quite a good place to be based I mean,
- 27:30for me, my niche is sort of, yes,
- 27:33I have lots of runners that come to see me and lots of very sporty people.
- 27:36But I also have lots of people who might look at sports massage and say,
- 27:39actually, this is not something for me.
- 27:41But I'm going to go and see her because she's got a nice room in her garden
- 27:44and she's got all the fluffy blankets and the towels.
- 27:45And it's sort of non-intimidating for people who maybe don't think sports massage
- 27:50is for them, if I'm putting that across properly.
- 27:53And so having that kind of, they can come here and it's very quiet and it's
- 27:57nice and they can park on my driveway. way they don't have to worry about anything
- 28:00it works quite well for my niche and so people will come here specifically.
- 28:06If that makes sense okay other advantages right so it's all about insurance
- 28:10that we talked about how costs are actually lower than people think we any other
- 28:14advantages come to your mind about working at home whether it be for me it's
- 28:19a flexibility i have a lot of different roles,
- 28:22and i like to be able to have the flexibility to move
- 28:25between them i like i like structure it's no secret from i
- 28:29like so i'll be you know from 1 30
- 28:32till 8 o'clock that's it that's when when i'm seeing clients but before
- 28:34that it's all the kind of the admin but i like the fact that
- 28:37i can put a load of washing on and then come out of zoom and then
- 28:40go and take that off i like walking 30 seconds to walk
- 28:43to work yeah just got back from a weekend of
- 28:46driving and that car is staying on that drive now for the duration i
- 28:50i find the bits that i've so
- 28:53i've spoken to people at networking meetings in the past and they've said how
- 28:57do you deal with the distractions of working from home how do you keep yourself
- 29:00disciplined and I've never really struggled in that way because it has always
- 29:04been a dedicated space so it was a front room before and this is a garage conversion
- 29:09but it's a dedicated space so if I'm here I'm working.
- 29:13And I don't elsewhere to not work I'm just going to jump in for a minute,
- 29:18yeah definitely I think one of the big things in the past when we were in London
- 29:23I did try for a little bit working in a clinic and it just didn't It just didn't do it for me.
- 29:32It felt sort of too impersonal. It felt quite rushed.
- 29:36And I think one of the bigger things now, you know, working from home,
- 29:41you know, I really, not a morbid thing, but I love dealing with injury.
- 29:48And, you know, a lot of my people are police officers, prison officers,
- 29:52members of the fire brigade.
- 29:54And I think it's amazing what sort of injuries those sort of people do carry.
- 29:58And a lot of people who are in chronic pain and stuff like that.
- 30:03And I think as you go on and as you build your business,
- 30:08I think one of the things is that it's very important to, you know,
- 30:14if you have to write to, you want a good relationship with GPs,
- 30:17and I think sometimes that's very hard to build, but what you write to them and how you talk to them,
- 30:23I think that's the thing from the start, that you have to be on their wavelength.
- 30:28Length and is i think one of the nice
- 30:31things is gps i've got
- 30:34you know i've got a good working relationship with people and i think
- 30:37the fact is with gps you know physios do
- 30:41so much we do a fair bit as well but
- 30:44people want you know people will come to you because
- 30:47they know you and they trust you okay so so working
- 30:51from home then that brings us on maybe to a topic of how is your relationship
- 30:56with other health professionals is it affected by the fact you're working from
- 31:00your home do you think that maybe you're not taking as seriously as somebody
- 31:03who is within a big organization or some building or do you find it makes any
- 31:08difference at all where you're working,
- 31:12experience no that might be a fear some people might have even more imposter
- 31:17syndrome thinking i'm working from my home rather than you know working down
- 31:20at the master sports center or something down the road you guys don't suffer
- 31:24from that louise i do find it because you worked in the clinic before have you
- 31:27noticed a change to use that working at home.
- 31:32Are you on mute louise can't hear you we've got a cartoon kind of a mouse thing
- 31:38going on with your microphone oh no.
- 31:44We'll come back to that but yeah so yeah so so because
- 31:47i imagine some people might feel are working from my home this
- 31:51the same way sometimes sports therapist thinks oh yeah i do all right but
- 31:53i'm not a physio i'm wondering whether there is any of that imposter syndrome
- 31:56of yeah i look after patients but i'm at home i'm not in a kind of a building
- 32:00i've got my own kind of business in four weeks i've never um i've never considered
- 32:03it making a difference but maybe that's because i'm cocky and i just think well
- 32:06i'm the therapist it's personality thing yeah i'm the um And I'm the one who
- 32:11deals with the healthcare professionals.
- 32:13And it is so common, you know. So actually thinking about it,
- 32:17I did make sure this place was set up as a really, like, professional-looking place.
- 32:22I've got a couple of plants. It's all clinical.
- 32:27That helps me. That's what I wanted personally. Even my living room set up was quite clinical.
- 32:34But, you know, I can't get rid of the old Victorian fireplace and things like
- 32:37that. But people said they liked that, that kind of thing.
- 32:40I'm not i'm not so good it's an interesting question i've not considered it affecting
- 32:44how other people who are the professionals might think of
- 32:47you i mean that's nice for listeners to know i'm just thinking of potential barriers which
- 32:50people outside have got if they can save money from being at home as it's not
- 32:54going to be for everybody obviously i think a big factor which you've already
- 32:56touched on is personality are you able to concentrate at home are you able to
- 32:59multitask are you able not to put your feet up and think oh i can't bother this
- 33:03read this or play my video games you know it does take a certain personality
- 33:06but for people who it could mean I mean,
- 33:09the difference between closing shop and not staying in the industry and continuing,
- 33:13it's good to get these barriers out of the way.
- 33:15Penny in the chat room there says it from Soma Sports, it makes no difference
- 33:20where you're working from.
- 33:21And that's a nice segue into I think it'd be nice for us to share or you guys
- 33:24to share some of your setups to show just how I'm lucky I've seen them.
- 33:29But they're pretty professional. I mean, they're looking great. They're not.
- 33:33In case the case, our listeners are thinking that what someone's done is just
- 33:35flip up a couch in kind of like the bedroom and just kind of,
- 33:39you know, you've got your bookshelf and teddies in the background or the kids washing or something.
- 33:42It's just not that's not how we're going to make sure your washing's out of the way.
- 33:49Anyway, yeah. So, so, yeah. Who should we let? I mean, we've got the advantage
- 33:53here of garage conversion.
- 33:55Co-host Nikki, maybe you can get your pictures ready. Because I'm thinking that
- 33:59actually might be one of the barriers is people think, and it is hard work,
- 34:03you know, get into where you want to be.
- 34:05But it's all, I'm sure all of us there think it would be totally worth it.
- 34:10So whilst Nikki's getting her photos ready, if you listen to the podcast,
- 34:12this might be an opportunity for you to go to YouTube because we're going to
- 34:16see before and afters of what Nikki's created.
- 34:18And I've seen it before and it's pretty cool. It is pretty cool.
- 34:21And it may well be inspire you, might show you as Nikki talks us through it.
- 34:25This is something i could do i don't really use my garage the car's always on the driveway,
- 34:29could i save x amount of money by working from home it
- 34:32might be incredible so i'm going to share this on the
- 34:35screen but we will explain what's going on to podcast listeners here we go so
- 34:41can you see that okay not yet i'm going to make it bigger so we can all see
- 34:45what's going on there we go okay so that is the view from my utip so my garage
- 34:51is attacked from my house and i know that So there are garages that aren't.
- 34:54And there are some things that are different.
- 34:56So that is the view from the garage from my utility room door.
- 35:02So that's where it all started.
- 35:04So things that are different is I can obviously put plumbing and heating in
- 35:08that if I wanted to. And I do have heating in there.
- 35:11And if you've got a separate garage, that might be a bit difficult.
- 35:15The key thing is all I needed was building regs approval.
- 35:19And that might be a bit different if you've got a separate garage.
- 35:21I think it'll still be building rates approval, but that might be a bit different.
- 35:25It depends how big it is. Yeah.
- 35:28Certainly, if you're adding any square footage, anything else to the floor plan,
- 35:33so making anything bigger or moving anything, it's plan of permission,
- 35:36which is a whole other ballgame.
- 35:38But building rates was, councils make it really easy for you to manage it yourself these days.
- 35:43And you just basically go and register, pay 360 quid.
- 35:47And then all you've got to do is arrange site visits at the appropriate points
- 35:53and your builder will manage it with you.
- 35:56I'm going to flick quite quickly through these just to kind of show a beginning to end.
- 36:03But there's the view from the outside so you can see some of the pipes being laid.
- 36:07So you can see that we really did start with a bare shell of garage and that's
- 36:11what it looked like from the front.
- 36:14One point while i'm here that gas meter box was new so my gas meter was inside my garage,
- 36:19you can't see it there big massive chunky thing so that's
- 36:22to consider if you're going to convert your garage and your gas
- 36:24meters inside they now legally have to be outside also that
- 36:27would have been the head height for when people came in and that was that did
- 36:31work out about i've got written down probably about 700 quid to relocate that
- 36:36to outside and get it as a smart meter so again not not massively prohibitive
- 36:40good it's good if you don't need to was this work done by external people or
- 36:44have you got you yourself.
- 36:48There's another and they all came in and
- 36:51he he i
- 36:54just trust i trust him you know i really really trust him
- 36:57and there's my plumber as well who's also fine that's
- 37:01so amazing that's a great point i mean literally you could be pay
- 37:04having this down whilst you're paying for our treatments it's great very
- 37:07very good oh no no it's just a lot of treatments it
- 37:11could help well i wouldn't know how quickly progress
- 37:14is made so you get stood work goes up first and so you'll see there's
- 37:16a wall there kind of here in front so this is now
- 37:19the door to my treatment room and i've got i've made i
- 37:22asked them to create an extra wide corridor to
- 37:25wheelchair access and an extra wide access door so
- 37:29there's that's the back room and then there's that
- 37:31utility room that that i was looking from before and
- 37:34then it's basically so that's that's what works this
- 37:37is the kind of disruption you can expect if you need a gas meter
- 37:40putting in and so insulation
- 37:43there's absolutely tons of insulation
- 37:47in any new stuff as of a couple
- 37:49of years ago so bear that in mind because the dimensions of your garage will
- 37:53not be the dimensions of your finished treatment room i couldn't fit in my old
- 37:57cabinet which was nice because i got an excuse to buy new furniture but because
- 38:02all of a sudden my my ceiling was low and my floor was higher, things wouldn't fit in.
- 38:08So there's lots of options. You can have a floating floor. I had a floating
- 38:10floor put in. Then you have pipework above and below. So that all gets all covered up.
- 38:16Oh, that one I'm showing you because remember what that looked like.
- 38:20That's what my electricity box.
- 38:22There is a window that I was having cut in. Building regs wouldn't let me have
- 38:26two. So that's something to
- 38:27bear in mind. Just something to do with how wobbly that wall might become.
- 38:31But they'll let you know that straight away at the beginning.
- 38:34And there it is looking like a bit like a space station.
- 38:36And then where the opening was for the garage door
- 38:39that's the first bit of the wall that was
- 38:42going in so you might have to have
- 38:44a big stanchion put in if you're having a heavy window like i
- 38:47did so that's more cost electrics going
- 38:51in cluster board that was a big step because it
- 38:53starts to look like a real room and then there's what will
- 38:56be a window so this is a cool one so
- 38:59that's that reminds me of the matrix everyone everyone remember that bit
- 39:02in the matrix where it glitches yes out and
- 39:05it's a brick wall this freaked me out for at least two
- 39:08days so there's that's the view so i'm
- 39:11we've talked steve was talking about a community and having
- 39:14kind of like you know getting a name for yourself be kind to your neighbors
- 39:17as well because you will have this took six weeks six or eight weeks okay there
- 39:23will be a lot of disruption yeah throughout that time so go around and talk
- 39:27to your neighbors tell them it's all going to be going on i had a lady lives
- 39:30next door who works on night shifts.
- 39:32I made sure none of the noisy stuff was happening. They absolutely adored me
- 39:35for that. Gave me a bottle of champagne.
- 39:37This is my clever builder boxing in the electrics,
- 39:43in a cupboard that only a massage therapist would like because there's perfect
- 39:47slots for your couch rolls.
- 39:49There's my new entrance door once those bricks have been cut out.
- 39:53And that's what it looks from the outside. So this is actually approached from
- 39:56– so there it is with the door in it.
- 39:59So there's the new window that was put in. There was the new door that was put
- 40:02in. I had some lighting stick that's up down the side, which you can see from the wires.
- 40:06And there's my wall, which you did quite a good job of matching.
- 40:09Very clever. So from that point on, it really – it moves.
- 40:12Was it felt like to me it moved really fast but the builder
- 40:15he was like oh it's going so slow one thing i've
- 40:18put this in because there's dehumidifiers everywhere plaster
- 40:21takes a long time to dry especially if you
- 40:24do it in winter so bear that in mind look at that well
- 40:27if it is the podcast it's it's well worth going over
- 40:30to youtube just in case you're thinking of garage conversions it's
- 40:33giving i mean you documented this looks like every five minutes and
- 40:36i was i was did you not i've seen my posts on facebook for last
- 40:38february and march it was always going
- 40:42to be i made up a song for one of them i made a song about
- 40:45my front door we'll give links to the song of us in stone notes
- 40:48right so yeah let's flick through to where what we're
- 40:51looking at now yeah i want to leave time for um yeah that's
- 40:54what i'm getting to so flooring gone down and then the blinds going
- 40:56up the last bit so this is beautiful that's incredible
- 41:00that's for a garage that looks really nice look at that
- 41:03how cool is that wow yeah
- 41:07i mean this answers the question of would you have any envy of not being out
- 41:12of the building this looks beautiful yeah very good we are open that's much
- 41:16yeah see there's a little bit so then i did this video for my clients saying
- 41:19there you go you walk down the side here so basically it's just a little walk
- 41:23through just so that people are aware.
- 41:26You know how to how to get in where to find you but this is
- 41:28this is in my home but it's completely separate
- 41:31so my home is on the right of that of that image
- 41:34there and then this is all self-contained because
- 41:37i will have staff in here at some point that is part of the grand vision yeah
- 41:43and i need it all to be separate so i've got easy access to there's a toilet
- 41:47right off the corridor and there's a sink just beyond that so this is all going
- 41:51to be self-contained and able to have a team,
- 41:56fantastic very cool geez you're
- 41:58sending a bit of a benchmark now everyone else on the i might just go.
- 42:06Very nice that's amazing that's that's like i
- 42:09mean that's really cool because i don't think anyone else has got a garage conversion happening so
- 42:12that's a real eye-opener and i am happy if anyone
- 42:15wants to ask any questions i'm on the forum so just
- 42:18just pop any questions because it's going to be things that i haven't mentioned so
- 42:21wow that was a treat thank you so
- 42:24much that's amazing that's amazing that's so
- 42:27beautiful and the whole process you say was about what did
- 42:30you say six weeks did you so it started february the
- 42:3214th valentine's day last year and ended i think i had my first clients in the
- 42:36first week in april so oh wow six weeks yeah yeah which is not bad for winter
- 42:42winter time but it probably helped that the builders were clients slash colleagues
- 42:47of yours because that's one of the biggest hindrances isn't it is builders this discipline?
- 42:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. I grew up in a family from the building industry,
- 42:55so I kind of know my way around the building industry.
- 42:58Yeah, yeah, yeah. And fortunately, I've lived in this area for nearly 20 years
- 43:02now, and I've been doing this for...
- 43:0515 years and so i've already built up so i've got a plumber i've got a sparky i've got a builder,
- 43:11if you were moving to a new place and doing this it
- 43:14might be a bit different because you would expect somebody to manage it
- 43:16all whereas i was managing it with my builder amazing okay amazing right what
- 43:22should we go for who wants to share do we go for log cabin or pop-up or do we
- 43:25go for garden purpose-built kind of beautiful show what should we go for who's
- 43:30feeling like sharing can Can you hear me now or not? Yeah, we'll go for the log cabin.
- 43:34Louise, trust me. I can't hear you now, Louise. Welcome back.
- 43:37Yes, you were speaking at the wrong time. Sorry.
- 43:39It's fine now. Right, Hannah is going to bring up. So, Hannah Tabram,
- 43:43you are going to share your purpose-built shed, which you insist is a shed, it's not a log cabin.
- 43:48Yeah, it is a shed. I can't work that.
- 43:52There you go. So, good. We're going to bring up these photos.
- 43:55Again, if you listen to the podcast, we'll try to describe what's in them,
- 43:57but it might be a good opportunity if you're thinking of putting a structure
- 44:00you in your garden of having a look at these pictures as Hannah talks us through
- 44:04it. Cool. Can everyone see those?
- 44:07So this is my before. You can kind of see.
- 44:10So for those that can't see, it's basically a square of lawn,
- 44:13which looks really flat and smooth in this picture. And it was not.
- 44:16It was incredibly bumpy.
- 44:17And you can just see a square made of string laid out. And that's the footprint of the building.
- 44:25So we did the vast majority of work on this ourselves because because we wanted
- 44:29to save money doing this.
- 44:31The only thing that we had professionals in to do was actually putting the shed up itself.
- 44:35The shed was made to order to the size I wanted and the electrics and everything
- 44:39else we did ourselves. So this is a before.
- 44:42This is my husband who was breaking up rubble to build the concrete base.
- 44:48And for those who can't see, he has a jackhammer, which we borrowed off a client
- 44:52because building clients.
- 44:53And after I took this picture, I realized he was wearing his Crocs because it
- 44:57was a really hot day. And I did send him away to go and put some safety.
- 45:00Please go and put your boots on. I really like you with all your toes.
- 45:03But this is the kind of work we had to do. So we shifted. I don't know how much rubble we shifted.
- 45:08Lots and lots of rubble. which most of which
- 45:11we got for free we put a post on facebook said we need rubble for a base
- 45:14and people just turned up so we had to break it up ourselves another
- 45:18great tip good but i mean yeah for
- 45:21things like that if you ask there will always be someone doing building
- 45:23work it'll be like please come and take it away please because people have
- 45:26to pay for a skip so always ask for
- 45:29that kind of thing this is a building itself going
- 45:32up so again this is a half-built shed and you
- 45:35can kind of see it's standing on breeze blocks which is
- 45:38how we decided to overcome the bumpy ground
- 45:41situation it was so bumpy we couldn't actually lay a concrete slab without it
- 45:45just costing an arm and a leg so we built these plinths of breeze blocks which
- 45:50is probably not something I would do again it was really really difficult I
- 45:54think if you're really really good at DIY you'd probably be fine but we're like
- 45:58this will be fine how hard can it be turned out it was quite hard,
- 46:02So, the building is halfway up, the floor is actually ready insulated,
- 46:06and then the shed is actually lined with this brown paper, which is a damp proof membrane.
- 46:12So, that's how it came. It is kind of a shed in the sense that they make them
- 46:17to order and they are kind of like garden room summer house type things.
- 46:21And this is the finished product when it was up. So this is the exterior of
- 46:24the shed. I have since painted it.
- 46:27So you can see we've laid a gravel path that comes up the garden and we built a step.
- 46:33If you go onto my Instagram, which is Hannah Tabram Sports Massage,
- 46:37I've got a little video where I start on the driveway and walk all the way up
- 46:40and show people around the room.
- 46:42So if anyone's interested, you can see the whole thing. And this is the interior.
- 46:48So we boarded it out with plasterboard. There's a lot of insulation in the walls
- 46:52and in the ceiling behind this, which we put in ourselves.
- 46:55This is all plasterboard. We didn't actually have it plastered. We didn't skim it.
- 46:59Basically, what we did is I learned how to do joint taping.
- 47:02So you get tape and filler and you basically tape in the joints and then you
- 47:06put a mist coat and we painted it all ourselves. We did all of that.
- 47:10It's got an electric heater on the wall. Obviously, the electrician did that.
- 47:13It's got my table right in the middle of the room, just a portable table because
- 47:17it's quite handy to be able to move it from side to side.
- 47:20What I was saying before about building regs, I should say that this is only
- 47:24applicable to England, as far as I know, because planning it is a devolved issue.
- 47:29And I will also say it's a really long time since I worked in planning.
- 47:32So please don't take this as gospel and sue me if you get it wrong.
- 47:37But building regs, you can put a garden office up in your garden.
- 47:40And if it has a square footage floor space of less than 15 square meters, you can do that.
- 47:47It counts as permitted development. there are also rules with how high it can be.
- 47:51And this may not apply if you're in a conservation area or if you have a listed
- 47:54building that you live in.
- 47:57Your local authority will be able to advise you on this. But for mine,
- 48:00I didn't need any building regs. I didn't need planning commission.
- 48:02You could just put this up.
- 48:03Oh, wow. The only thing you need building regs sign off is on the electrics.
- 48:08So you get qualified electricians to do that and they can sign that off for you.
- 48:12Do you have electricity, kind of, does it go into your lawn?
- 48:17Yeah, basically it comes from a consumer unit, which is in the garage.
- 48:21And then there's an armoured cable that runs all the way up the garden that's buried.
- 48:24And I've got another little fuse box in the shed which is sort of just over
- 48:28my head in fact in a little cupboard and it's all wired up
- 48:32so that was all signed off by the electrician who's qualified to do that if
- 48:36you my shed is not plumbed in I don't have running water what I have is a little
- 48:39portable sink which you can kind of see in the corner of this picture you just
- 48:43fill up with hot water and carry up.
- 48:45If you had it plumbed in I think that makes it
- 48:48more complicated with building regs as well it will so
- 48:51if you do have that pinned in what you've got to notice what
- 48:54you've got to look out for is they they assume that you are
- 48:57trying to install a granny flat which is a residential dwelling and
- 49:00everything changes yeah and if i
- 49:03was going to have this like as a part-time guest room and
- 49:06have people sleeping overnight then you have to have building reg sign off
- 49:09as well if it's bigger than 15 square meters then there are regulations about
- 49:13like non-combustible material and how close it can be to the garden fence if
- 49:17anyone wants to know if you look on the planning portal which is a website which
- 49:21is run by the government it's got all this information is there It's all in
- 49:25fairly accessible format.
- 49:26There's definitely one for Wales because I looked. I don't think Scotland's
- 49:29got one, but there is guidance in Scotland as well.
- 49:33That's my former civil servant bit done. You guys are going to have to go see
- 49:37me because I've not been a civil servant for a long time.
- 49:40But yeah, it took us from start to finish. It took us six months to do this.
- 49:44Obviously, we were working on it at weekends.
- 49:46I was trying to sort of run and still build up my business at this time.
- 49:50We have a small child who has additional needs and my husband works full time.
- 49:54And it was quite nice if we got to sort of see each other occasionally as well
- 49:57from not behind a bit of plasterboard and like wave at each other.
- 50:00It was really good. I'm really, really proud of how it turned out.
- 50:03It was really stressful to do it i'm not gonna lie there were definitely there
- 50:07was definitely a point when we were building the base and we were really stressing
- 50:11and i looked at my husband and said do you really hate me right now he's like
- 50:13no but i do really resent you so i'm like okay.
- 50:19That's not great is it fantastic no that's
- 50:22amazing very rewarding yeah and it looks lovely
- 50:25in there it's quite incredible and once again you know it's
- 50:28it's anybody who fears that
- 50:31their setup at home is not going to look professional forget it have a
- 50:34look at what we've seen so far and it's amazing and there
- 50:37is there is an added charm to it i think as well if you
- 50:40are handing over your body to a professional and
- 50:43giving them the option to treat you and and and touch
- 50:48you basically in ways that they're giving you their confidence and trust then
- 50:51there's something very like i think steve was touching on
- 50:53there's something very personal about it so if you're going to someone's abode
- 50:56if it's like next where they live that that kind of
- 51:00encompasses that personalization that individual it's kind
- 51:03of there's something very special about that as opposed to going to like a gym
- 51:06where everyone you know other people just been you know going in and going
- 51:09out and stuff so yeah amazing i'm inspired myself right
- 51:13we've got two more to go imagine if you're super super personal
- 51:16louise's place it being well the pop-up
- 51:19yeah okay louise if
- 51:22we're ready to share your screen and let's have a look at this okay let's go
- 51:25so louise asha
- 51:28share mine oh yeah i can take that
- 51:31off here just in case i get a little bit i'm gonna not touch it and it's off
- 51:34i can that's what i could do if my while we're doing that i want to respond
- 51:36to a question cecily yes who my insurance is with it's with intelligent insurance
- 51:41i can't remember which um i think it's just through one of the comparison sites
- 51:45but the actual company is called intelligent insurance insurance.
- 51:48Fantastic. And they've been absolutely brilliant. Their online web chat is super, super helpful.
- 51:54I've never had, I think I might have spoken to one person once.
- 51:58There we go. We'll make sure that any information like that gets put in the
- 52:01show notes. But yeah, that's great. People, if you've got other questions, just fire them away.
- 52:06Soma penny from soma again has said we all love a
- 52:08before and after photo shoot of a project like that um yeah
- 52:11we do they are really inspired pictures i'm not i'm not gonna lie
- 52:14it's amazing i'm hoping to inspire a few people to convert their garages okay
- 52:18we're gonna now look at the next store which is a pop-up room
- 52:20here we go louise okay here we go so as i
- 52:23said this is my front room so this is
- 52:26before i've set it all up as you can see there's a
- 52:29telly there and there's the xbox for the kids there's my massage stool but i've
- 52:33got my posters up they stay up all the the time so much the kids annoyance anyway
- 52:38so that's how it is before I set it up and that's the back of it before I put
- 52:45the wall dividers up this is my mother's bureau that I use my desk.
- 52:50There's my medals yeah we've got lots of those I'm a
- 52:54keen runner right so and then this is me now setting it
- 52:57up hang on a bit bigger so I cover
- 53:00the telly with my business logo and the
- 53:04poster coaster put some foam rollers
- 53:07in in the view and my weights for any exercise rehab
- 53:10and then this is with the couch set up nicely done
- 53:14yeah yeah like you wouldn't think
- 53:17it was a front room that's no i know it's amazing isn't it um so just yeah quite
- 53:24a few little photos there um this is my january promotion that i haven't got
- 53:29rid of them all yet but they're little notebooks that says So the first one
- 53:32book says everything is grand. That's the green one.
- 53:36And the other one is be the best version of yourself. And then on the back,
- 53:39it's got my business stuff.
- 53:40So if anyone needs a notebook to write their exercises down in, that's what I give them.
- 53:46And there's a sofa for everyone to sit on too when they come and give me their
- 53:51assessment, subjective.
- 53:52And they talk about everything they need me to help them with.
- 53:55And then you can see my dividers here, which I set up.
- 53:58And then it shuts it away from the rest of the house the tobias look very professional
- 54:02yeah that was originally a covid buy for my future husband because he was having
- 54:11an office at the back of the house and he wanted to shut it away from everybody during covid time so,
- 54:17yeah so we bought loads we've got about four of them but these
- 54:19are what i use for mine at the the moment so um yeah
- 54:22that's it really so in a nutshell very
- 54:26clever um and it works so take
- 54:30you to kind of set it up and then unset it all oh well
- 54:33all of about 10 to 15 minutes wow yeah
- 54:36so that's the beauty of it not like being
- 54:40able to open it and close it because obviously it's my portable couch
- 54:43which i then use when i go mobile therapy
- 54:46as well so yeah so basically when
- 54:49i got a lot of of work don't you with running clubs and and yeah we've worked
- 54:52with football teams so it's yeah it makes sense for you
- 54:55to have a looser structure at home because you're going to be making stuff
- 54:58out with you so it makes sense that's exactly so yeah and
- 55:01then at the end of the day around about seven o'clock when i more or
- 55:04less finish i pack it all away and open it
- 55:07all up and it's back to our house again really so yeah but when the when people
- 55:12come in i mean they do come in through the front door so we don't have a separate
- 55:15access but they come through the front door and they come into that room and
- 55:18those dividers separate as a little doorway and then they just come into that
- 55:23bit so they don't see anything else unless they need to use the toilet.
- 55:27Yeah, because the toilet is at the back of the house and they do then obviously
- 55:31have to walk around to go to the loo.
- 55:33So sometimes that can't be helped. But that's it, really.
- 55:36I think that when people see you in your setting, so they kind of identify you
- 55:40more as a human and not a business.
- 55:42And I think they might be less likely to cancel late to take a nap.
- 55:48Very good point. I can see you've got a family. So I had that difference when I was at the clinic.
- 55:53I used to get last minute cancellations all the time because you never speak
- 55:57to the person before you see them because they book it online or they book it
- 56:01to the phone for the receptionist. They don't speak to me.
- 56:04Then when I went completely private, it's all me talking to the client beforehand.
- 56:09And I was sending out my reminders and then they come back to me and said,
- 56:12yeah, thanks, Louise. Looking forward to seeing you.
- 56:14Or can't wait. Really need it. You know, so I hardly ever get cancellation.
- 56:19Point. Very interesting point. that is a big problem
- 56:23isn't it for a lot of therapists but this year alone
- 56:25because i was getting a few towards the end of last year i've
- 56:29now set up terms and conditions private policy and that
- 56:31goes out with the first assessment form and they
- 56:35have to agree on that and it's it just about like anything less than 48 hours
- 56:39notice you know we'll talk about it if it's if it's you know very last minute
- 56:44i'm sorry you have to pay so it's it's awkward never buy don't say sorry sorry
- 56:49well i'm getting used to i've got to learn to say no and i've got to learn not to say sorry.
- 56:56That's brilliant thanks louise i mean that really is inspiration for somebody
- 56:59who's thinking oh i can't do it my front room that'd be awful have a look at
- 57:02the video look at what louise is doing and it'll hopefully give you some ideas
- 57:05of how you can literally with it and so cleverly yeah tv with your logo and
- 57:12the use of the bamboo kind of printed shutters that always makes a place basic professionals.
- 57:17There's associations in there, kind of like health and care with that sort of
- 57:20print. So yeah, really good stuff. That could well inspire some people.
- 57:23To consider doing that really cool there's an interesting comment here from
- 57:27cecily his love which says our garage is home to the husband's two road bikes
- 57:30and his turbo trainer fat chance of conversion.
- 57:35Yeah what you might need cecily is to go on a gary mendoza communication
- 57:38course some kind of motivation interview thing persuading him
- 57:42to make him think it's his idea you know just intonation and
- 57:45things like that but yeah you've got a yeah it's a different uh barrier
- 57:49you've got there but yeah great okay right we
- 57:52are past 905 so people if you're joining us in the live lounge
- 57:54and you need to go we understand i can see the numbers dropping down a
- 57:57little bit people here on the sta panel you okay to stick with
- 58:00us for another five ten minutes yeah you need to go there please i
- 58:03know you've got other lives going on i can see you've got other lives i'll see
- 58:05your garage and i've seen your room and i've seen your shed but we
- 58:09have now got steve's creation in the
- 58:12back of the garden so what i'm going to do is i'm going to take off
- 58:15louise's shed screen remove that
- 58:18and we'll bring up some of steve's and this all
- 58:21started quite a long time ago then yeah 14 years did you say 14 years yeah right
- 58:26let's bring up some images for you and you can talk us through them we can still
- 58:30hear you when it's behind yeah our garage came down and we started to uh build
- 58:35that there's a young man who's been a patient the guy called simon who's a very good carpenter,
- 58:42And one of the big things with that is a lot of insulation on the floor,
- 58:48in the roof and everywhere.
- 58:50So you probably see the dividing walls where Simon's working.
- 58:55We've got heating, we've got electric there.
- 59:00And I'm not really an estate agent, but it serves its purpose and it's serving its purpose.
- 59:06And it does an absolutely great job. sorry did
- 59:09you say you knocked down your garage to make room for this then or yeah
- 59:12i'll get our garage was not it wasn't
- 59:16fit for purpose okay yeah yeah really and
- 59:19and this came up yes we got a separate entrance
- 59:22and yes we painted
- 59:26a couple of times and and and my wife
- 59:29jackie is is very very good when it comes to
- 59:31the floor and floor of the garden and just to
- 59:34make film people relaxed relaxed and you know
- 59:38when they come in i think one of
- 59:40the big things people you know stress is very
- 59:43real it's physical physiological and psychological if they
- 59:47come into an environment in which they can unwind you
- 59:50know that is a much better thing definitely and electricity
- 59:53and plumbing what's the set of electricity is there
- 59:57no actual running water
- 1:00:00there but you know
- 1:00:03you can use all your equipment and you
- 1:00:06can work very well there what have
- 1:00:09you guys got this is for you steve and if anybody else wants to jump in
- 1:00:12working at home what about if your client wants to use the loo what have you
- 1:00:15got in place there right well we've got we've always have got a loo in our ground
- 1:00:21floor is very very nearby and basically you can sort of escort and just make
- 1:00:28sure that that they're okay and sort of going through.
- 1:00:31You know, yes, that's one of those things.
- 1:00:34Is it kind of quite impersonal? Are they kind of walking through the kitchen
- 1:00:37and kind of going, sorry?
- 1:00:39Well, yeah, but I think the fact is, you know, we're all human.
- 1:00:45And the fact is, it just helps with the business atmosphere, really.
- 1:00:50Yeah, I can get that. Other people, what's your situation if a client wants to go to the house?
- 1:00:55Yeah, our downstairs loo, basically,
- 1:00:57the way you get to my room is you come up the side of the house.
- 1:01:00House and then the downstairs loo is
- 1:01:03in kind of a back hallway so they can go straight in through the
- 1:01:06back door and the loo's right there they don't have to go through the house I
- 1:01:09do always have to apologize for all the wellies and trainers and bike
- 1:01:12helmets and coats and dog leads and so on and so forth I do so on my website
- 1:01:18I've got a great big FAQ sister page and one of the things is what's your room
- 1:01:23like is there a toilet and it's like no there's not a toilet obviously if someone
- 1:01:27comes in there desperate I'm not going to be like no go up the garden and pop over their,
- 1:01:31that's fine you can use the loop that is that expectation so people know you
- 1:01:36will be going into my house yes it is my home yes the downstairs loo has got
- 1:01:40a great big picture which is a.
- 1:01:422000s era video game cover that my husband used to play
- 1:01:45and his brother bought in the artwork so it's like elves and
- 1:01:48dragons and that kind of thing and that's fine could be worse could be worse
- 1:01:51i think people are people
- 1:01:54are coming to your home at the end of the day and they're
- 1:01:57going to pop going to use the loo the kitchen door shut over
- 1:01:59they're not going to get leapt on by the dog or the child most likely
- 1:02:02so yeah they can use the loo very interesting let me just expand this again
- 1:02:08for you you recently changed it so again listen to the podcast you can't see
- 1:02:12it but i love or there's a little image of inside which looks beautiful again
- 1:02:16it really is it looks so welcoming and clean yeah that should be there's the
- 1:02:20man himself it's my new my new page.
- 1:02:23I had my other bench for Best Buy in nearly 14, certainly 12 years.
- 1:02:30And I needed a gas strut. And I rang the manufacturers.
- 1:02:34And there was silence on the end of the phone. And they said,
- 1:02:38we don't make that anymore. My old bench cost me £75.
- 1:02:43That new one cost me quite a bit more. Yeah.
- 1:02:4614 years later, you can see that. And then you re-coated it.
- 1:02:51What was the reason for the change?
- 1:02:52Was that just, what was the reason for that? Just to make it,
- 1:02:55just a bit of decorating.
- 1:02:59I must admit, the big thing, I was down with my wife.
- 1:03:02We went to B&Q, and Jackie was off looking at spicy weather bits and pieces.
- 1:03:09And I was just sort of chatting to the folks where they were doing the paint mixing.
- 1:03:14I said, what does that look like? I said, oh, that's a really nice colour.
- 1:03:18And I called Jackie over, and then we had a bit of a discussion.
- 1:03:22And they said that looked nice on the treatment room and so uh so it became this sort of.
- 1:03:31Particularly like this little edition outside which you can talk us through
- 1:03:34yeah i think i think one of the big things is that i find like a lot of clients and patients,
- 1:03:41they're chatting about things and they're chatting about life and one of the
- 1:03:45things is that if they're sort of elderly or anything like that and you've got
- 1:03:50a bit of time and you know it's in the summer and they want to sit down and just have a natter. Hmm.
- 1:03:56I think sometimes, you know, the physical and the psychological is actually
- 1:04:00quite good because the fact is, you know, when they put the world to rights as well,
- 1:04:06they go away and they are much, much happier when they've been treated and they're
- 1:04:15coming back again and they're a lot happier.
- 1:04:17Definitely. It's a lovely little three-seater garden set.
- 1:04:21It's perfect. And also their other halves can sit there, read the paper,
- 1:04:24do the crossword. but what do you think about that? Yeah, that's a good idea. I love that.
- 1:04:29Yeah. Do you find, well, do you ever, I don't know how close you do your appointments
- 1:04:34together, but I'd imagine that if they were quite close together and somebody
- 1:04:37is, we've all got those really lovely clients, but they just,
- 1:04:40they do hang around and take an awfully long time to leave.
- 1:04:43They've got a really nice way to kind of gather themselves and put everything
- 1:04:47back in their bag and just like take five minutes if you do need to go back in with somebody else.
- 1:04:52Absolutely, yeah. So they're not being rushed or hurried. yeah
- 1:04:55absolutely i think i think the fact the
- 1:04:58fact is you know it's their time and you're
- 1:05:02there for them and i i think that's the
- 1:05:05thing isn't it i think you know it's care but i
- 1:05:08think i think one that's one of the big things you know how are
- 1:05:11you that you know that's what it means isn't it you know good to
- 1:05:14see you and and i think some of the phone you know you might be the only letter
- 1:05:20of of good news that they probably see that day and and i think that the fact
- 1:05:24is that you know it's really good to see and and they go on really i've got
- 1:05:30this i've got that i've got whatever,
- 1:05:33but you know i think one of the jobs of the therapist is about picking people up.
- 1:05:38You know you don't pick people up by putting them down and i think that's the
- 1:05:42thing as therapists if we can do that,
- 1:05:45We've done a big part of the physical job as well. Yeah. And it seems that one
- 1:05:49of the conclusions from today is you can do that pretty well from home.
- 1:05:53You're inviting someone into your life.
- 1:05:55So, hey, they're going to open up and talk about their lives.
- 1:05:57It's kind of like that therapeutic alliance, which we know is so important.
- 1:06:02We know the subjective and the information they give you, the peeling away the layers.
- 1:06:06It can be hard if you're in a clinic where they're kind of, oh, here I go again.
- 1:06:09You know, you can get that white coat syndrome where you just don't want to open up a little bit.
- 1:06:13Beard and if in someone's home it's like wow I just
- 1:06:16say when I was in the clinic I just felt that it
- 1:06:20was like a conveyor belt as well because it was
- 1:06:23like in and in and in and out and then
- 1:06:25you didn't have time to really build a rapport as such
- 1:06:29as I'm at home I've got gaps between my clients as
- 1:06:32well so I've got that time to just give them that
- 1:06:35little extra bit that they might need as well and the rebooking
- 1:06:38and stuff like that so I don't let a patient go how
- 1:06:41a client go home now about rebooking as well that's a good key
- 1:06:44before we finish i just want to make sure so we we're
- 1:06:47not obviously with bias because you guys all work
- 1:06:50at home so but i just want to make sure that our listeners have got maybe
- 1:06:53some watch out for what are some of the things you
- 1:06:56think maybe you should warn people about if they are considering working
- 1:06:59at home nikki so you need to think about the tax
- 1:07:02man yeah so for me
- 1:07:05so there's there's good news and there's bad news oh
- 1:07:08no there's not that much bad news actually you do
- 1:07:11need to consider so you've got an annual what's it
- 1:07:14called so you've got an annual capital allowance which
- 1:07:17none of us in our our scale of business maybe yours matt
- 1:07:20would ever get anywhere near you can write up 100 of the tax but you can write
- 1:07:25100 of your capital expenditure within that the that same year the year that
- 1:07:30you finish it so my garage conversion i don't mind sharing cost about 20 grand
- 1:07:33all in strictly speaking you can't claim for material changes to the building.
- 1:07:39So my window and my door getting cut out of the brickwork.
- 1:07:43I couldn't i'm not supposed to pay me for but all of the
- 1:07:46plumbing all the pipes or the insulation all of the furniture the
- 1:07:49flooring the radiators the gas meter relocation
- 1:07:52all of that is claimable and also
- 1:07:55the advice you get of an accountant unless he is your accountant and he does
- 1:07:58your accounts bit by bit is just chuck it all in so i think my build the bits
- 1:08:06of like the fabric of the building they probably came to about 700 quid if i
- 1:08:10got my builders pricing separately So I just put,
- 1:08:12I had a pretty crack year income wise last year.
- 1:08:16So when I put my 20 grand capital allowance in, I didn't have to pay any tax
- 1:08:21because it balanced it out.
- 1:08:22I only made about 20 grand last year, also sharing a lot there.
- 1:08:27But because it was that 20 grand capital allowance, all of a sudden I didn't owe any tax.
- 1:08:33And what that meant for me is because we're self-employed and we have to pay our tax in advance.
- 1:08:37The tax that i'd paid last july as
- 1:08:40towards that the other the july before
- 1:08:43rather towards the tax bill i got that as a refund nice
- 1:08:47good yeah no money but you
- 1:08:50still get really excited when your taxman gives you yeah i
- 1:08:53felt like it just doesn't happen very often it doesn't
- 1:08:57so what's the
- 1:09:00warning there just make sure you've got your account into your own the
- 1:09:02implications of everything that you're doing
- 1:09:05yes don't try and don't so i mean mine was
- 1:09:08700 quid and you know everybody kind of just went no they're
- 1:09:11not going to be they're not going to be looking into that if if they if
- 1:09:14i got found out in an audit then you would get fined but
- 1:09:17the taxman's interested in far far
- 1:09:20bigger fraud than you would be for me for window okay
- 1:09:23no the the warning is make sure
- 1:09:26you're aware of the important things like
- 1:09:28insurance building regs tax implications
- 1:09:32and mortgage if
- 1:09:36you're doing your home and i'm
- 1:09:39like i said i'm happy if anyone's got any questions at
- 1:09:42all whether it's like in the
- 1:09:45next few weeks or over the in the next few years i'm always happy to
- 1:09:48share my experience and i'm sure everybody here is as well yeah we'll
- 1:09:51make sure there's links there any other the bits of advice before we go yeah
- 1:09:54i think i would just say like the.
- 1:09:57Advantage of having your treatment room at home is you can control everything about
- 1:10:00it you can make exactly what you want it to be but the
- 1:10:03disadvantage is that means you have to control everything about it like it's
- 1:10:06all on you you have to do your risk assessments if anything goes wrong with
- 1:10:11it you are going to have to be the one that fixes it whereas you know if you're
- 1:10:14renting a clinic space or something and the window starts leaking you can be
- 1:10:17like oh landlord sort it out please you you are going to have to fix that yourself.
- 1:10:21So you just need to be ready that like.
- 1:10:24Yes, it's great you have all the control, but you do have to take all the control as well.
- 1:10:27That's a great way. Jump in, Matt. Yeah, go for it. I think one of the big things
- 1:10:32is just going along with what everyone said, keep every single receipt for your tax man.
- 1:10:42Keep in with all the official bodies. You've got to be whiter than white.
- 1:10:48And the big thing is just also that everything's clean, everything is welcoming
- 1:10:53and the environment that that individual that patient walks into,
- 1:10:59welcomes them and they want to return very cool
- 1:11:02someone on the chat also was it soma sports
- 1:11:05massage on the chat also made a really good point about safety from strangers
- 1:11:08and yes you do have to think that you are inviting people to your home and they
- 1:11:12are going to know where you live whether that is making your policies i mean
- 1:11:16personally i my husband works from home and on That happens to be the day that
- 1:11:22I don't work anyway and that works quite well.
- 1:11:24So there's somebody in the house because I am up in a shed on my own with a
- 1:11:28stranger asking them to take their clothes off, essentially.
- 1:11:31So, yeah, it's something you have to consider. That said, I used to do mobile
- 1:11:36and I was going into their homes and I much prefer people coming to my space
- 1:11:40and territory as opposed to me going into someone's house.
- 1:11:44Again, I think I've just got this assumption that no one's ever going to do
- 1:11:48me any harm and I've never really come to any harm.
- 1:11:51But that's not i wouldn't recommend that as a policy for other people i would
- 1:11:55suggest so when i do get staff i will be implementing a loan worker policy which
- 1:12:00will have steps that you can go through and there are services that you can
- 1:12:03buy which is a panic button you can press and there are emergency services on
- 1:12:07the end of the line and so it is that's it's valid you do need to,
- 1:12:11you do need to think about that yeah i think panic buttons i mean i don't think necessarily,
- 1:12:16cost too much but it's yeah we'll probably touch on when we talk about the mobile
- 1:12:20event work but But, yeah, it's an important point.
- 1:12:22Good point. Yeah, a friend who had her staff working alone at their clinic,
- 1:12:28which is in a public building, you just get this quick –.
- 1:12:33It's an app that is provided by a service and each
- 1:12:36of the therapists know which buttons they have to
- 1:12:39press on their phone and it just went straight through nobody
- 1:12:42ever uses it thankfully yeah good but it's there
- 1:12:45it's very clever yeah very good right look i'm just conscious of the time now
- 1:12:49it's like uh we've gone an hour and 20 minutes episode but there's so much information
- 1:12:53in there guys i really appreciate you giving us your time and sharing it people
- 1:12:57in the live lounge thank you very much for joining us as well and and sharing
- 1:13:00your questions i hope you guys I've enjoyed it as much as I have,
- 1:13:04just an insight into different ways of running your business.
- 1:13:07And hopefully, what I'd like to think is that there'll be some follow-ups on
- 1:13:11this. Now, the best place to leave follow-up questions is probably YouTube.
- 1:13:14The reason why, for a while, I just went on YouTube is the shelf life of YouTube is infinite.
- 1:13:19It just stays there. It appears in Google for results when you put in a question
- 1:13:24like, oh, how much is insurance for garage therapy?
- 1:13:27It will come up in Google. Everything on Facebook just disappears.
- 1:13:30It won't come up anywhere. so if you do want to continue
- 1:13:33the conversation if you listen to the podcast so you've got any questions i
- 1:13:36would recommend that you head over to youtube and use that comment list for
- 1:13:39questions i will always obviously keep an eye on it and if if i see anything
- 1:13:42come up then i will forward it to our esteemed panel and we can keep that conversation
- 1:13:46going you know because it's a really cool topic but obviously we'll also be
- 1:13:50keeping the conversation going from a slightly different angle in a week's time
- 1:13:54which if you listen to the podcast ultimately means that it will be in episode.
- 1:14:00187 but we will be recording it live on February the 27th at 8 o'clock and it's
- 1:14:05going to be how to set up a massage therapy business part 2
- 1:14:07in a rented room which essentially for a lot of people means in
- 1:14:10a gym or might be in another practice so if you are listening to this podcast
- 1:14:15and it's not that date yet and you're an STA member then contact me Matt at
- 1:14:20thesta.co.uk if you'd like to come up on the panel and just share your experience
- 1:14:24like these good people have done here it's so interesting hearing from fellow clinicians about,
- 1:14:29The recommendations and the advice and the tips which comes out tonight has been incredible.
- 1:14:34So if you'd like to be part of that, then do email me.
- 1:14:37And then in two weeks time, in episode 188, which is going to be March the 5th,
- 1:14:41I think, that'll be all about how to set up a massage therapy business,
- 1:14:44doing mobile work and events and probably crossing over, you know,
- 1:14:48like our good Louise Asher here does.
- 1:14:51So yeah, if that's your bag and you've got experience and things you share,
- 1:14:55then again, Again, contact me, Matt, at theSTA.co.uk or find me on social media.
- 1:14:59Even if it's one chat live, just find me and message me saying,
- 1:15:01Matt, I might want to be on the panel.
- 1:15:03Because it's OK, isn't it, guys? It's not as nerve wracking as sometimes you think it's going to be.
- 1:15:09Thank you to my wonderful panel tonight, my co-host, Nikki Mansfield. Thank you very much.
- 1:15:13And to Hannah Tabran, Joe Holloway, Louise Asher, Steve Kirby and Gary Benson,
- 1:15:17who was in the lounge tonight as opposed to on cam.
- 1:15:21So thank you for everybody who joins us in the lounge as well. and if
- 1:15:24you are listening to the podcast then do please leave us a rating and review it just
- 1:15:27it just helps us appear higher in the rankings which
- 1:15:30means the good word gets out there no one makes any money out of it it's just
- 1:15:33about spreading the good word of our guests to a larger audience and the
- 1:15:36only way we can do that is by people leaving ratings and reviews so
- 1:15:39do take time please do that and if you
- 1:15:41are listening to the podcast and you want to join us live and network then yeah
- 1:15:45come along to the sports therapy association youtube channel or the facebook
