- 0:00For most people, the impulsion to action comes from a need,
- 0:04desire or ambition of some sort. If these are removed, the
- 0:09individual can become depressed and fall into a state that lacks
- 0:13motivation and thereby reduces their energy.
- 0:16When it comes to doing anything. We frequently see people or
- 0:22experience within ourselves states of being that have
- 0:25essentially given up with the sense that all this action is
- 0:29meaningless or destined to fail, or else a sense of deep fatigue
- 0:35takes over and one can barely get up out of bed and go through
- 0:39the normal chores of the day. Some people work day in and day
- 0:44out for years to accomplish some task only to have all their
- 0:49forward progress destroyed in a day.
- 0:52It is discouraging and they either renew their efforts or
- 0:57simply accept the failure and give up action.
- 1:02The spiritual seeker is not immune to these setbacks and the
- 1:06fatigue of action. He has an additional issue to
- 1:09resolve, and that is if he removes all the prods that the
- 1:15physical, vital and mental nature normally provide to
- 1:18provoke him into action, what remains to get him to act at
- 1:23all? In some cases we see individuals
- 1:27who take up the spiritual life simply abandoned the life in the
- 1:31world with the sense that it is all an illusion, or else as a
- 1:37reaction to setbacks and difficulties, more or less as an
- 1:41escape from the pressures of the outer existence.
- 1:47What can move the spiritual seeker to action when he is no
- 1:50longer driven by need, desire or ambition?
- 1:55In the Bhagwad Gita, Sri Krishna confronts this issue when Arjuna
- 1:59declares he will not fight and it is better to give up than to
- 2:05undertake the action before him for which he has been preparing
- 2:09his entire adult life. He explains to Arjuna that one
- 2:14can act from an entirely different standpoint, one of
- 2:18doing the work to be done without desire for the fruits,
- 2:22without attachment to the result, simply because it is
- 2:27what the divine has placed before 1 for one's action.
- 2:31Sri Krishna explains that all of the warriors are destined to die
- 2:35in this battle, and that Arjuna's role has been prepared
- 2:39to carry this out, but the result, one way or the other,
- 2:44cannot be avoided. The larger purpose of moving
- 2:48humanity forward in its evolution and overcoming
- 2:52retrogressive forces is what Arjuna should be focusing on.
- 2:58The spiritual seeker is called upon to act with full energy and
- 3:02focus, not for his own personal aggrandizement or benefit, but
- 3:07as a dedicated and consecrated activity carrying out the
- 3:11Divine's impulsion in the world at large.
- 3:15This requires shifting the standpoint for the motive power
- 3:19from the external being, the Nexus of the body, life and
- 3:23mind, to the psychic being, which is the individual's direct
- 3:28link to the divine. Shrioro Bindo notes quote.
- 3:35Men usually work and carry on their affairs from ordinary
- 3:38motives of the vital being, need, desire of wealth or
- 3:42success or position or power or fame, or the push to activity
- 3:48and the pleasure of manifesting their capacities.
- 3:51And they succeed or fail according to their capability,
- 3:55power of work and the good or bad fortune which is the result
- 3:59of their nature and their karma. When 1 takes up the yoga and
- 4:04wishes to consecrate one's life to the Divine, these ordinary
- 4:09motives of the vital being have no longer their full and free
- 4:12play. They have to be replaced by
- 4:15another, a mainly psychic and spiritual motive, which will
- 4:19enable the sadak to work with the same force as before, no
- 4:24longer for himself but for the divine.
- 4:28If the ordinary vital motives or vital force can no longer act
- 4:32freely and yet are not replaced by something else, then the push
- 4:37or force put into the work may decline, or the power to command
- 4:41success may no longer be there. For the sincere Sadak the
- 4:47difficulty can only be temporary.
- 4:50But he has to see the defect in his consciousness or his
- 4:54attitude and to remove it. Then the divine power itself
- 5:00will act through him and use his capacity and vital force for its
- 5:04ends. End Quote.
