Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome back to Inside the Tape with Greg Cosel
- 0:12Speaker 1: on Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher. I've got Greg Cosell.
- 0:16Speaker 1: He's gonna help us break down the tape of the
- 0:18Speaker 1: Eagles thirty one nothing win over the Raiders in specifically
- 0:21Speaker 1: the defense we did the offense in part one. This
- 0:24Speaker 1: is part two. I guess we saved the best for
- 0:26Speaker 1: last because the defense, Greg allowed seventy five total yards.
- 0:31Speaker 1: And someone could say, but it's the Raiders, and someone
- 0:34Speaker 1: could say it was cold, and someone it's very uninfrequent
- 0:38Speaker 1: and I think only the ninth time since two thousand
- 0:41Speaker 1: that a team held another team to seventy five. Yeah,
- 0:45Speaker 1: I mean, it just doesn't happen every day.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Look, the point is it's an NFL game. The Eagles
- 0:51Speaker 2: had lost three straight. You know, you got you got,
- 0:54Speaker 2: you gotta go out and play. I mean, it's it
- 0:55Speaker 2: doesn't matter, you know. I mean, And like we said
- 0:59Speaker 2: at the beginning of the offensive segment, you know they
- 1:04Speaker 2: want to play to their standard. That's the goal. Now, Yeah,
- 1:06Speaker 2: obviously there's specific things about every opponent that you're coaching,
- 1:10Speaker 2: but you want to play to your standard.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Right, Let's talk about what Vic decided Vic Fangio decided
- 1:16Speaker 1: he wanted to do in this game from a coverage
- 1:19Speaker 1: standpoint and an aggression standpoint.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Well, this was a pure coverage game. They rushed five
- 1:25Speaker 2: one time in this game. They had a couple of
- 1:27Speaker 2: sim pressures, but for the most part, this game was
- 1:30Speaker 2: all about rushing for and playing coverage. They rushed for
- 1:36Speaker 2: on twenty nine of pickets thirty dropbacks. It was a
- 1:39Speaker 2: four man D line pass rush game with higher percentage
- 1:42Speaker 2: man coverage behind it. I mean, that's what this game.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Was, right, So he felt confident enough to not only
- 1:49Speaker 1: not to blitz to get a four man rush, but
- 1:51Speaker 1: also play more man coverage, more cover one than in
- 1:54Speaker 1: the early plays.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah, because there's only a couple of things and they
- 1:58Speaker 2: know this. It's a below average NFL offensive line, and
- 2:02Speaker 2: there's only one receiver you really have to worry about,
- 2:04Speaker 2: and that's Brock Bowers. So, I mean, you know, we're
- 2:08Speaker 2: just being honest about the tape here. You know, none
- 2:10Speaker 2: of this is a personal comment. You know, it's not
- 2:13Speaker 2: a very you know, it's not a very good old line.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I mean, you know, it's in some ways and this
- 2:19Speaker 2: is an odd thing to say. It was a very
- 2:21Speaker 2: similar approach that he took in the Super Bowl when
- 2:23Speaker 2: they felt they could defeat the old line of the Chiefs,
- 2:26Speaker 2: and he literally rushed four on every play. You know,
- 2:30Speaker 2: he took the same approach.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, we said in the pregame show.
- 2:33Speaker 2: By the way, in the Super Bowl it was thirty
- 2:35Speaker 2: four to nothing in the third quarter, so you could
- 2:38Speaker 2: argue that that approach. You know, in some ways the
- 2:41Speaker 2: approach worked exactly the same. It's just that Mahomes is
- 2:44Speaker 2: a little better than Picket, so they were able to
- 2:45Speaker 2: make some plays, you know, and from the mid third
- 2:48Speaker 2: quarter on, right.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So it looked like we continue to see Brendon Graham.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I know, he only played about seven snaps and he
- 2:54Speaker 1: got two sacks out of it, all on the interior,
- 2:56Speaker 1: all on the interior, yep. And Jordan Davis, what kind
- 2:59Speaker 1: of game do you yeah, because he came under the
- 3:01Speaker 1: remember against that Bears game, we started to say, hey,
- 3:04Speaker 1: he's gotten moved a little bit playing upright, it seems.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Like I last two games. You know, again, the tape
- 3:10Speaker 2: tells you everything. I've been really enjoying watching Jordan Davis
- 3:14Speaker 2: these last two weeks since you know, we had that
- 3:16Speaker 2: game where he struggled a bit. I mean, he showed
- 3:18Speaker 2: two strong snapshots of power pass rush driving offensive lineman
- 3:22Speaker 2: back into the pocket. That's been a meaningful improvement in
- 3:25Speaker 2: his game as the season has progressed. He continues to
- 3:28Speaker 2: be a strong force inside in the run game. That
- 3:31Speaker 2: clearly shows up every week. I mean, he's become a
- 3:35Speaker 2: very good football player. You know, maybe he's not the
- 3:37Speaker 2: guy who's gonna get fifteen sacks. I doubt that no
- 3:40Speaker 2: matter how much he improves, but he's he's a guy there. Hey, look,
- 3:43Speaker 2: they're using him now at times as a looper and
- 3:46Speaker 2: inside stunt concepts. Who would have thought that amazing? Right?
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah, like motion, Yeah, no, it's it's great double stunts.
- 3:53Speaker 1: You observed another thing that we saw last week we
- 3:56Speaker 1: talked about that they continue to do. I think that
- 3:58Speaker 1: that just that's sort of a estament to the athleticism.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Jordan Phillips has brought the versatility ye with the other
- 4:06Speaker 1: guys that they have.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Very athletic as well. Right, So they've got so people
- 4:10Speaker 2: understand what a double stunt means. It means that you
- 4:12Speaker 2: have a stunt on each side on the same play,
- 4:15Speaker 2: so you know, and normally you don't do a TE
- 4:19Speaker 2: on each side because then the loopers end up, you know,
- 4:22Speaker 2: kind of going in the same spot. You can depending
- 4:25Speaker 2: on how you know how you work it out, but
- 4:27Speaker 2: normally you might do with TE on one side and
- 4:30Speaker 2: an ET on the other. And just so people understand
- 4:32Speaker 2: what that means, the first UH letter is the one
- 4:36Speaker 2: the position that is the penetrator or the picker, and
- 4:39Speaker 2: the second is the looper. So if it's TE, the
- 4:43Speaker 2: tackle is the penetrator or the picker, and the end
- 4:45Speaker 2: is the looper.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yes, all right, so that's what we saw up front.
- 4:50Speaker 1: A good linebacker play again the Kobe Dean. Continue.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I love watching the Kobe Dean. You know, I happen
- 4:55Speaker 2: to see I just caught this. I don't know how
- 4:57Speaker 2: I caught it. Somebody asked, Daniel, did you see this interview?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Somebody asked Dan Landing when he was at Georgia, like,
- 5:04Speaker 2: who was the one player that you know, really stood
- 5:07Speaker 2: out that you knew you how to get and really
- 5:10Speaker 2: like stood out when you when you were the DC
- 5:12Speaker 2: at Georgia. And he said, I'm probably going to get
- 5:15Speaker 2: into get into trouble for saying this, because obviously he's
- 5:18Speaker 2: had so many guys who were like, you think of
- 5:20Speaker 2: his huge names and he said, it's n Kobe Dean.
- 5:23Speaker 2: He said, he said, to Kobe Dean, we had to
- 5:26Speaker 2: get him. And when he got here, the professionalism, the
- 5:29Speaker 2: work ethic, the approach was just off the charts.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah, certainly a franchise changer for the for for Georgia,
- 5:35Speaker 1: and he's really helped.
- 5:37Speaker 2: He's been so much fun to watch. I mean, he
- 5:39Speaker 2: had those two plays on the screens where he just
- 5:41Speaker 2: sees it and he goes. I mean, he's he's become
- 5:43Speaker 2: a tempo setter for the defense.
- 5:46Speaker 1: So how did interview? What did what was the plan
- 5:49Speaker 1: for defending brock Powers?
- 5:52Speaker 2: You know, there were a couple of times where I
- 5:54Speaker 2: thought that they there were sort of brackets, just a
- 5:57Speaker 2: couple I didn't think that they went out of their way,
- 6:00Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, Like you know, I mean
- 6:02Speaker 2: there were times Bond was on him. There were times Blankenship,
- 6:05Speaker 2: who's not a great man to man cover player, who's
- 6:08Speaker 2: played him man to man. I mean, you know, like
- 6:12Speaker 2: I said, a couple of times they were there were brackets,
- 6:14Speaker 2: but I didn't get the impression though the game plan was, oh,
- 6:17Speaker 2: we better take care of Bowers or else right, I
- 6:20Speaker 2: did not. Did you get that impression watching it?
- 6:22Speaker 1: No, I sort of got the impression they weren't scared
- 6:24Speaker 1: of anybody.
- 6:25Speaker 2: No, yeah, so, and I almost got the impression that
- 6:28Speaker 2: if Bowers made a play in the course of the
- 6:31Speaker 2: entire game, you would tip your hat and move on
- 6:33Speaker 2: to the next play.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and he did. He had a couple of catches
- 6:36Speaker 1: where I thought that was a nice six for twenty
- 6:38Speaker 1: eight Yeah. Yeah, and they were happy to let him
- 6:41Speaker 1: catch you know, average Uh, I guess four yards to
- 6:44Speaker 1: catch or whatever.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean my guess is if it was a
- 6:48Speaker 2: different kind of game and they were a really good team,
- 6:50Speaker 2: we might have seen some different things. But like I said,
- 6:53Speaker 2: if he happened to catch a twenty five yard or
- 6:55Speaker 2: for whatever reason, I think they just would have said,
- 6:57Speaker 2: nice play and let's move on to the next one.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Basically what they did.

- 10:41Speaker 1: one and up. All right, let's take a look at
- 10:44Speaker 1: some of the things to point out. I wanted to
- 10:46Speaker 1: start off with the first drive. It's fourth and six.
- 10:51Speaker 1: This is an example I guess of the cover one
- 10:54Speaker 1: that we saw Vic play, and.
- 10:55Speaker 2: This play was blanken Chip was the matchup on burs
- 10:58Speaker 2: because Bond was matched on the running back. This was
- 11:00Speaker 2: the one where Phillips tipped the throw right. Yes, And
- 11:03Speaker 2: by the way, if he didn't tip the throw, I
- 11:05Speaker 2: think Dean would have intercepted it.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I think so too. It was a little short because
- 11:09Speaker 1: of the tip, and Dean was wrong.
- 11:10Speaker 2: And also Dean was an underneath lurk defender, so his
- 11:13Speaker 2: job here is to play any routes that come inside.
- 11:16Speaker 2: None did so, and then he can just repicket and
- 11:18Speaker 2: let pickt take him to the throw. You'll see this.
- 11:21Speaker 2: They're playing man and Blankenship is on Bowers and Bond's
- 11:25Speaker 2: on the Uh where's Bowers right on top of the screen, right, Yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 2: that's Blankenship, I believe.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Uh no, no, because the genie sort of passes him
- 11:35Speaker 1: off there, unless that's not Bowers and I have the
- 11:38Speaker 1: wrong number. Hold on, I could maybe Bowers. I'm sorry,
- 11:41Speaker 1: Bowers is in line on the left side of the line,
- 11:43Speaker 1: right down below, right, Yeah, he's down below.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that is Blankenship then playing him.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Yep, didn't even look at him.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Yeah. So the point is you'll see it from here
- 11:53Speaker 2: that that Dean has no uh you know, he's a
- 11:56Speaker 2: lurk defender. So instead of this being robber, they call
- 11:59Speaker 2: this because it's a linebacker playing you know, a little closer.
- 12:03Speaker 2: But he just slid over and you can see if
- 12:05Speaker 2: Phillips doesn't tip this, I think Dean picks this off. Yeah,
- 12:08Speaker 2: because look, Picket just drops back and it looks right
- 12:10Speaker 2: there and that's where he's throwing. Look. Look you can
- 12:12Speaker 2: see it clear as a belt. Yep, yep.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And by the way, I know you mentioned Jordan Davis
- 12:16Speaker 1: and I'll rewind a little bit, but look at him.
- 12:17Speaker 2: By the way, No, Bowers is what number is Bowers?
- 12:20Speaker 2: Eighty nine? Right? Yeah?
- 12:22Speaker 1: I think actually it's I think eighty seven, is Meyer correct?
- 12:25Speaker 2: Yeah? So by yeah, So it's not the blanket ship
- 12:27Speaker 2: on Bowers's. It was Jackson on Bowers correct, correct, So
- 12:32Speaker 2: I was wrong on that.
- 12:33Speaker 1: That's okay, it happens. So Jordan Davis does a really
- 12:37Speaker 1: nice job of pushing the left guard bat you're talking
- 12:39Speaker 1: about has improved faster, I mean, drives him back into
- 12:42Speaker 1: Kenny Pickett here. Yeah, and that cause and then you know,
- 12:45Speaker 1: like you said, Joe Phillips gets his hand on the ball,
- 12:47Speaker 1: Nikobe Dean dives and it's it's you know, incomplete yep.
- 12:54Speaker 1: The thing about that was they started off in a
- 12:56Speaker 1: one high structure. I wanted to point that out because
- 12:58Speaker 1: we always talk about how often they want two hot structure.
- 13:01Speaker 2: But they were feeling.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Their oats, all right, and this play is going to
- 13:04Speaker 1: be the moro Jomo Sack. I believe that it's the
- 13:10Speaker 1: it's the third and ten in the first quarter. He
- 13:12Speaker 1: kind of puts a spin move.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Oh yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah.
- 13:17Speaker 1: But again, like it looks like they're again in one
- 13:19Speaker 1: right cover one here they are is this one robber?
- 13:23Speaker 1: Is this one robber? Because the safety came is I
- 13:30Speaker 1: just saw the way ran in there and then obviously
- 13:36Speaker 1: the sack the Yeah.
- 13:38Speaker 2: So that's yeah that they were playing man again here
- 13:41Speaker 2: right now.
- 13:42Speaker 1: This is a good view of the move that a
- 13:44Speaker 1: Jomo plays.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I actually keep playing it. Yeah yeah, that
- 13:51Speaker 2: he just beats the right guard. Yep.
- 13:54Speaker 1: But that was a nice little spin move because it
- 13:56Speaker 1: was originally a double team.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Where it was not the center that he beat. It's
- 13:59Speaker 2: the center. It's the center. Yeah, it's Kapa. It's Kapa
- 14:02Speaker 2: who he beat. It's the center. Yep.
- 14:04Speaker 1: It looks like the left guard kind of just gives
- 14:06Speaker 1: himn initial punch before he leaves, and then you have
- 14:08Speaker 1: a nice double double, smove, double spin, whatever you want
- 14:11Speaker 1: to call it on there to get the sack.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Good game for him.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Uh, second quarter, third and five, Brandon Graham sack. Yeah
- 14:21Speaker 1: how about that? And again, what do we notice about
- 14:23Speaker 1: the safeties? Greg cover one?
- 14:25Speaker 2: Yep? Cover one. Yeah, they're playing man.
- 14:29Speaker 1: And you got it looks like, yeah, Cooper de Jean
- 14:31Speaker 1: is on the slot. I'm trying to see where.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Bowers is there.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Yeah, hold on, I actually rewound it too much. And
- 14:41Speaker 1: this is again, get Joemo sack. Joe almost got long arms. Man,
- 14:46Speaker 1: he is a really interesting guy.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Here you go.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Yeah, so here's cover one, all right?
- 14:51Speaker 2: Where is maybe he's not? That was up top releasing
- 14:57Speaker 2: into the releasing late right, and this this is just
- 15:03Speaker 2: gray and beating beating the right guard. Yeah, yes, it's
- 15:05Speaker 2: just yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 1: So this is a new right guard for them, right,
- 15:08Speaker 1: Carlos or Rogers's.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Last right the rookie rookie right guard. Yeah, you beat
- 15:12Speaker 2: him in a one on one match up.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Yeah, he put him on skates, drove him back, and bam,
- 15:18Speaker 1: who was on?
- 15:19Speaker 2: Who was on Bowers? Here?
- 15:21Speaker 1: All right, I'll take it.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Okay, you moved on?
- 15:23Speaker 1: I can I can go back because I was curious too.
- 15:25Speaker 1: When they're in man who's playing Bowers?
- 15:28Speaker 2: It had the time? It is Blank and Ship because
- 15:30Speaker 2: that is Bowers.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna go to the aerial view to take
- 15:34Speaker 1: a look because we saw he was on the bottom up.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Cop right, Yes, yeah, so that's Blank and Chip here yep, yep,
- 15:43Speaker 2: that's Blank and Ship.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Yep. Boy, what great for? I mean, the pockets just
- 15:46Speaker 1: collapsed so quickly.
- 15:48Speaker 2: I mean, look a look at Graham use his hands.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Yeah, he didn't have that much time.
- 15:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And this last clip we'll look at is the bot interception.
- 15:55Speaker 1: You want to diagnose how this came to be?
- 15:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah, this I mean this yeah, this is uh,
- 16:00Speaker 2: this came on single high safety zone coverage concept. This
- 16:04Speaker 2: was zone. It was it had match principles as most
- 16:07Speaker 2: zones do. Bond. Bond did a great job here. He
- 16:11Speaker 2: felt Bower's route and he read Picket. I mean, and
- 16:14Speaker 2: that's in zone. That's kind of what you want to do,
- 16:17Speaker 2: you know, you kind of you want to have a
- 16:19Speaker 2: feel for the routes. And he saw it. You know,
- 16:22Speaker 2: you don't necessarily he's not necessarily matching it exactly, but
- 16:26Speaker 2: he has a feel for it. And then he looks
- 16:28Speaker 2: at Picket and he gets a sense of of you know,
- 16:31Speaker 2: right there, he looks to Picket. Okay, but cantel he's
- 16:34Speaker 2: not playing man because theoretically he just let that's Bowers,
- 16:37Speaker 2: I believe, right, yes, yes, because he let Bowers essentially
- 16:40Speaker 2: run by him, you know, so he's not matching him
- 16:43Speaker 2: man to man per se. So but then Picket throws
- 16:46Speaker 2: it and he just he's in perfect position because he
- 16:49Speaker 2: sort of did a great job of feeling Bowers and
- 16:51Speaker 2: reading Picket. That's just really good linebacker play.
- 16:54Speaker 1: It's like a non a no panic type of move.
- 16:57Speaker 1: You know, you got your on him. I mean, we
- 17:01Speaker 1: started to see this really developed last year. And we're
- 17:03Speaker 1: against Jacksonville Gate Week six or seven. But yeah, reads it,
- 17:07Speaker 1: jumps it.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Yep.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Nah, that was it for mister Pickett. It was a
- 17:11Speaker 1: tough day for him. I felt felt a little bad
- 17:13Speaker 1: for him. He didn't really happen.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, it's you know, not that we're gonna
- 17:17Speaker 2: talk about Kenny Pickett. But I thought he could be
- 17:19Speaker 2: a solid pro and it's probably never gonna happen, you know,
- 17:22Speaker 2: because that last year he had it Pit. I mean,
- 17:24Speaker 2: I didn't think he'd be a superstar, you know, just
- 17:26Speaker 2: because he's not that overly gifted. But the way he
- 17:29Speaker 2: played his last year at Pitt, I thought that, you know,
- 17:32Speaker 2: that would fit in the NFL. And it just the
- 17:35Speaker 2: things he showed that year he's never shown in the league.
- 17:38Speaker 2: That's the crazy thing. I can't answer the why to that,
- 17:41Speaker 2: but he's just never shown it true indeed. All right, Yeah,
- 17:45Speaker 2: this was a good you know again, they were a
- 17:47Speaker 2: good defense anyway. You know, they're not a bad defense,
- 17:50Speaker 2: you know. So they will see how the last three
- 17:54Speaker 2: games play out, you know that's uh. Look, they're gonna
- 17:57Speaker 2: win the division, so they're gonna have a home playoff
- 18:00Speaker 2: game at the Link and you know what, say what
- 18:02Speaker 2: you want Everybody can talk about all the teams in
- 18:04Speaker 2: the West, and there's some really good teams in the NFC,
- 18:08Speaker 2: but it's hard to win at the Link in January,
- 18:10Speaker 2: no doubt.
- 18:11Speaker 1: All Right, we'll do it again next week. That was
- 18:13Speaker 1: the Eagles defense against the Raiders again, a big thirty
- 18:16Speaker 1: one nothing win for Greg Cosell. I'm Jeff Mosher. You've
- 18:20Speaker 1: been watching Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell on Inside
