- 1:44the big story in the news is this death of the death of the state
- 1:48trooper in Mingo County on Friday, and Jeff Jenkins from the newsroom is going
- 1:53to join us talk about that and some other things going on. Lots to
- 1:55talk about in the world of news. Jeff is going to join us in
- 1:57the second segment of the show to go over those things. Also coming up
- 2:00a little bit later on the show. Of course, it's Monday, which
- 2:02means it's Mayor Monday, normally the first Monday of the month. We have
- 2:07Mayor Amy good One of Charleston on the show. Amy not with us today,
- 2:10but Matt Sutton, the chief of staff for Mayor Goodnes, will be
- 2:15on the show taking your phone calls. We get to that about nine to
- 2:16forty years so this morning. But before we get to all of that,
- 2:21I want to welcome into the show West Virginia Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate
- 2:24Mac Horner. Secretary Warner, good morning, How are you. Good morning,
- 2:28I'm doing great, good to be with you. Thanks, thanks for
- 2:30you for being here now. Not so much talking about the gubernatorial campaign today
- 2:35as much as we are talking about your current roles Secretary of State. They
- 2:38say this is an off year for elections, but just looking at the figures
- 2:43that were provided by your office, sixteen elections in the state of West Virginia
- 2:47tomorrow eighty seven. That's right, eighty seven on June thirteenth and eleven others
- 2:54taking place over the next few months at various dates. Of course, I'm
- 2:58talking about city or munist elections. That's a lot of elections, sir.
- 3:02It is. That's what I love about this job is it never stops.
- 3:06We tend to think of those big presidential elections or even the congressional ones every
- 3:09two years, but these are type elections are probably the most important to people
- 3:14because these are the ones they're dealing with your local issues, you know,
- 3:17you know, it can be anything from trash pickup or utilities and that sort
- 3:22of thing. City councils. This is what controls our day to day life.
- 3:28So that's why it's important for us to be talking about it, reminding
- 3:30people that we do have some elections. I think East Bank has one tomorrow,
- 3:34and then next week Chesapeake, Clinden and Cedar Grove, Glasgow, Pratt,
- 3:38Montgomery, all those have elections next week. And then this Saturday is
- 3:42South Charleston. That's one that's off. That's not on a Tuesday, it's
- 3:45on a Saturday. So it's important to pay attention to the talk shows like
- 3:50this, newspapers, the local media that will keep people informed and if you
- 3:53have a question talk to your municipal clerk. Now this is different than the
- 3:58county clerk. The county clerk run those elections you know, every two years,
- 4:02the big elections, But these of fier elections as we call it,
- 4:06these are done by the municipality. So talk to the municipal clerk. Don't
- 4:10have the ballots. Early voting has already occurring in some places. So you
- 4:15need to talk to be tuned to your local news to know about the municipal
- 4:19elections that are upon used right now. And you mentioned some of the ones
- 4:23here in the county, and I'll go over that list again again. South
- 4:25Charleston is this Saturday. But as you mentioned, you got Chesapeake, you
- 4:28got Clendennon, you got Eastbank, Cedar Grove, Glasgow, and Pratt All
- 4:31coming up Montgomery which straddles the Canafayette County line in our listing area. Also
- 4:38you've got Barbersville, Cavol County, the city of Clay and Clay County,
- 4:42and kind of going to the outline areas, you've got Fayetville, meadow Bridge,
- 4:45oh Kill, Pack Smithers. Smithers has a levy. By the way,
- 4:49we have four in Mason County. I know We have a lot of
- 4:51listeners down there as well. So so so just a lot of elections to
- 4:56be concerned with. What exactly does your office do on election days in these
- 5:00towns. Well, we send our election team out so everybody in the elections
- 5:04division. But we also have our investigators. We have ten investigators around the
- 5:10states. We have our field representatives, So we got to our entire office
- 5:14out, you know, they're dealing with elections, to visit the localities,
- 5:17make sure everything's running smoothly, see if there are any issues, complaints,
- 5:20power outages, any of those sorts of things that we might be able to
- 5:24provide assistance with coordination. Basically, prior to this, we've been working with
- 5:30helping with poll workers and training that sort of thing. So, like I
- 5:34said, this is what I enjoyed about the job is it never stops.
- 5:38There's always something going on. We make the analogy to the duct paddling underwater.
- 5:43These clerks and municipalities might seem calm on the outside, underneath they are
- 5:46working hard to make sure all the machines are properly registered and validated, that
- 5:54the poll workers are trained and ready to go, you know, to run
- 5:58the municipal elections. It's very similar to running any of the other elections,
- 6:00so that the administration, the paple with the administration is just as busy there
- 6:06as it is with the larger elections. The issue becomes turnouts, and so
- 6:12a lot of times you don't have the large turnouts that you do and the
- 6:15other elections. And that's why there's been an effort by the legislature to allow
- 6:18municipalities to align their elections with the larger elections, so you would probably have
- 6:26a larger turnout or participation in those city elections. But it's not a mandatory
- 6:30thing. This is up to the cities themselves to decide whether they're going to
- 6:34align their elections take it out of this all puer election and put it in
- 6:40with the larger elections, and they're pros and times to it. It's not
- 6:43as easy as just say we're going to change our election. There's spot of
- 6:46the administration. Line drawing. We dealt with this with the last election,
- 6:50with the census and the redistricting, there are a lot of lines moved,
- 6:56and so what I'm talking about is the precincts, and so imagine you might
- 6:59have a ward inside a city where you're allowed to vote for that city at
- 7:03election, but a precinct for a county election may go across that ward boundary
- 7:09into the county at large, and those lines would have to be alliance to
- 7:14make it run properly. So there's a lot of issues to it. That's
- 7:17why not all the cities are jumping on board, but some cities are to
- 7:21align their municipal elections with the county elections. Well, as you said,
- 7:26again we're talking with West Virginia Secretary of State Make Warner. You know it,
- 7:29it is up to the cities to do whatever it is that they want
- 7:32to do. It's a cost savy measure if they do go along with the
- 7:34counties. But again it's it's their decision. And as you said, it's
- 7:38not easy, not as easy to just saying okay, we're going to move
- 7:41the election. I mean there's town charters have to be looked at and things
- 7:44of that nature. Let's talk about some of these elections in the past,
- 7:46Secretary, some of these around the state historically have been have been decided by
- 7:51you know, like five votes. I mean that these are really close elections.
- 7:55Sometimes they really are. And that's where we always talk about every vote
- 7:59counts in the municipal elections, particularly since there's traditionally a lower turnout, your
- 8:03vote counts proportionally more than saying some of the other elections. So it's all
- 8:09that's why it's even more important to vote in these local elections. We had
- 8:13that situation out in Harper' Sterry a couple of years ago where there were four
- 8:18votes where it issued whether they should be counted or not. At first they
- 8:22weren't, and that leaned to the city council one direction. Once the West
- 8:26Virginia Supreme Court waiting said they would be counted, then that changed the outcome
- 8:30of a race or two. It changed the dynamics on city council and at
- 8:33stake was one hundred and thirty seven million dollar project that now is moving ahead,
- 8:41and it's something because, like you said, less than a handful of
- 8:43votes to determine the outcome of that race. So that's just one example.
- 8:48We've had a number of other examples where races were decided by coin flips or
- 8:52drawing strolls, that sort of thing, because the races ended up tied.
- 8:56So if you're listening to this show and you have you're in one of the
- 9:00cities that has an election tomorrow, be sure to or next week, be
- 9:05sure to vote your votes. That's going to have a have significant weight in
- 9:09the outcome of Hoover in your city. Well, and I think it is
- 9:13interesting what you said is sometimes we do get tied up on and I just
- 9:16kind of joked about the tournam. It's an off year, and it is.
- 9:20I guess if you look at it, you know from you know,
- 9:22national standing or gubernatorial or whatever the case may be. But sometimes, as
- 9:26you said, Secretary, of these use municipal elections. These are the people
- 9:28that really affect your day to day life if you live in one of these
- 9:31towns. Let's transition for a moment. You are a candidate for governor House,
- 9:35the campaign going, Oh, it's going great, to getting out all
- 9:37over the state, driving back and forth, will being Huntington, Seving and
- 9:41wheeling tomorrow. It's it's fun to travel this state. You don't realize how
- 9:46big this state is until they start traveling from Martinsburg to Huntington and wheeling at
- 9:52criss crossing state, different events on different days, and I'm just trying enjoying
- 9:56it. We're having these coalitions are being built where somebody from every county is
- 10:01representing save the veterans or women for Warner. We're going to have a Second
- 10:07Amendment coalition and then a faith group, so the people are joining off.
- 10:11It's fun to see that kind of enthusiasm. It's truly a grassroots which you
- 10:16hear all the time about a grassroots campaign. This is what we're up to,
- 10:20and I'm very pleased with Foy. Things are going well already. Secretary.
- 10:24There's been three people that I know of all Republicans so far, that
- 10:28have announced they're running for your current seat a secretary of State. Former Legislator
- 10:31Ken Reid was one, Delegate Chris Pritt, and current Putnam County Clerk Brian
- 10:35Wood. They've all been on the show and they've all announced that they are
- 10:37running for Secretary of State, the office that you currently hold. Maybe some
- 10:41Democrats that that'll come forward as well. I find it interesting that to a
- 10:45person, though, each Republican candidate Secretary that's running for the office you currently
- 10:50hold has said they want to continue running the office the way that you and
- 10:54your staff has, so that's got to make you and your team in the
- 10:56office feel pretty good. Well, it does. That's what I think everybody's
- 11:03looking for not just inside our office, but the state is looking for a
- 11:05continuation of the policies and the procedures that we've put in place. We only
- 11:09have an a team in place in the Secretary of State's office. We have
- 11:13a fine tune. We've reduced the staff significantly, so people more. People
- 11:18are doing more with less, but they're happier. I think anybody you talked
- 11:22to says they're they're pleased with the interaction that they have with the Secretary of
- 11:26State's office. That we answer the phones, we deal with the issues wanted
- 11:30at a time, and that's what we're looking to maintain, and that's what
- 11:33you want in state government. That you want to success stories and in continuation
- 11:37of that as either people not in this situation, I'm not term limited,
- 11:41but in some situations people are terminated term limited. Say that the governor's race,
- 11:46and that's why you have so many candidates stepping forward for that, and
- 11:50then that opens up other pop openings for other candidates to move into those positions.
- 11:56And change is good because each person moves into an office has their own
- 12:01style of leadership, They have their own issues that they want to address.
- 12:05When I came in. The big issue was cleaning up those registration lists.
- 12:09We tackled it. I worked with the county courts and we've taken off over
- 12:11four hundred thousand names and at the same time we've registered about three hundred thousand
- 12:16people, So we've cleaned up those roles. It's never been there's never been
- 12:20higher competence in the elections than we have right now. And indeed, that's
- 12:24what people want to do, is they want to see a continuation for West
- 12:26Virginia as being singled out among the states for its election integrity and security majors.
- 12:33That's why I have been asked to go over and testify in front of
- 12:35Congress four times now to tell about the success we've had, how we did
- 12:41it, and what recommendations we would make to other states. So it's kind
- 12:43of a neat thing to have West Virginia being recognized nationally as a leader in
- 12:48election integrity. Secretary of Satan mac Warner. Let's recap here a lot of
- 12:54municipal elections coming up, as you mentioned, many in Kada County another you
- 12:56folks could be top up. But let's say that I go out and I
- 13:00see some short of shady business going on. Somebody is electioneering or trying to
- 13:05intimidate me to vote a certain way. What should I do? We still
- 13:09have our see something, text something. This is again something that we've led
- 13:13the nation with. We're leveraging technology to make effections secure. So everybody that
- 13:16has a cell phone can take a picture of that or even a video.
- 13:20They can text it into our hotline. And that's why we have more investigators.
- 13:26Now. We can put that investigator on the scene within an hour or
- 13:28pretty much anywhere within the state, and you begin that investigation right then.
- 13:33But the main thing is first to deter it from happening in first place,
- 13:35or if it does happen, to go shut it down quickly so that people
- 13:39have confidence in those effections. You can still call our fraud hotline eight six
- 13:43six fraud WV. You can call your county clerk and call your local police.
- 13:50The main thing is just to report whatever it is you see that you
- 13:52think is toward in the elections arena and it will be dealt with so just
- 14:00real quickly. Since I've been in office, we've had eight convictions for fraudulent
- 14:05activities. We've had a number of pre trial diversions and turn ten referrals to
- 14:11prosecuting attorneys. See. See, it's not what you would say with widespread,
- 14:15but it does happen, and that's why we want people to be alert
- 14:18and let us know if there are any issues. West Virginia's turned the corner
- 14:22where you know, we used to be the laughing stock when it comes to
- 14:26election fraud. It was West Virginia in Cook County. We're kind of in
- 14:30competition with each other there in Illinois for who had the worst election integrity.
- 14:35But we've turned to that around completely, and so I think everybody can be
- 14:37proud of that. We want to continue having stay secure elections here in West
- 14:41Virginia. What's Secretary of State MIKEL. Warner. We'll talk soon. Thanks
- 14:45a lot, best of luck with all these elections. You guys get your
- 14:46work cut out for We will over a hundred elections coming up in these municipals.
- 14:50Good luck and we'll talk soon. Thanks a lot. Thanks day,
- 14:54Secretary of State Mike Warner. It's nine to twenty two five of the Life

- 15:16One other note about the elections, I'll throw out here in full disclosure.
- 15:18As you know, you you say a one time work or the Secretary of
- 15:22State's office something that people don't realize. I'm gonna I'm gonna drop a little
- 15:26knowledge on you here. Okay, it is illegal to wear a campaign shirt,
- 15:31a hat's, a button or pen or anything like that into a polling
- 15:35place. Now, in my time there, that was probably the biggest infraction
- 15:39that I saw, and most people were just ignorant of the law. You
- 15:43know, they support a particular candidate and let's say it's for mayor, and
- 15:46they just walk in with their vote for John Smith for mayor, shirt,
- 15:50hat, whatever in the polling place. That's illegal. You can't do that,
- 15:54and most people just didn't realize it. As I said, they weren't
- 15:56intentionally breaking law. They just didn't realize that's a law that's considered electioneering.
- 16:00So if you're supporting a particular candidate in one of these well over one hundred
- 16:03elections, remember you got you can't wear the T shirt or the hat or
- 16:07the pen into the polling place. Also, cell phones are illegal in the
- 16:11polling place as well, so just keep it in your car. Don't wear
- 16:14your campaign heere in the polling place. And when I was working there,
- 16:18I'd ask more than one person, Okay, if I stopped by a polling
- 16:22place to say, you need to take that shirt off. Can't wear that
- 16:25shirt in the polling place, can't wear that hat, that button, you
- 16:26know whatever. So so just keep that in my know. The law before

- 16:49the world of news coming up with Jeff Jenkins, and a little bit later

- 19:56According to a tex Champions from the newsroom, Jeff, good morning, Um,
- 20:02what a tragic story out of Mingo County Friday is now really the entire
- 20:06state is morning the death of West Virginia State Police Trooper Corey Manard. You
- 20:10are on the scene, we had it covered all week. Then break down
- 20:12the story for us. Yeah it uh, you know happened with the shooting
- 20:17On Friday afternoon, Sergeant Maynard and other state police responded to a call of
- 20:22a shooting down in basically Matejan area and Beach Creek, which is generally meet
- 20:29one and they responded to a shooting there and man had been shot, and
- 20:34so we really don't know the exact and we're hoping to get some of that
- 20:38today, like exactly what happened, you know, as Sergeant Minard and others
- 20:44arrived on the scene. There are some initial reports of being ambushed, but
- 20:48I mean, we haven't we haven't seen a lot of details about that yet.
- 20:52But at some point, I mean, he responded and he was shot
- 20:56and was pronounced dead at Logan Regional Medical Center, you know, pretty short
- 21:03time later, you know, within a couple of hours, and then there
- 21:07was about a seven hour man hunt for the alleged shooter. He was taken
- 21:11into custody by about ten o'clock Friday night, and the sergeant's body was brought
- 21:18here to Charleston, initially to the State Medical Examiner's office, then Saturday taken
- 21:23to northern West Virginia. He was a tissue donor, Sergeant Maynard was.
- 21:29And then they brought his body back yesterday to a funeral home down in Logan
- 21:33County. And there'll be there'll be a memorial server or you know, they'll
- 21:37in southern West Virginia. There'll be a more memorial service where we've been told
- 21:41we haven't seen any details on the time yet. But at Mingo Central High
- 21:45School coming up on Wednesday, you know, I have to say, Jeff,
- 21:48I've never really seen anything like it. My wife and I were driving
- 21:52to Logan Friday night from my high school reunion around six o'clock or so,
- 21:56and we were passed by one trooper, followed by another and then a convoy
- 22:00and I told her, I said, well, there must be an accident
- 22:03somewhere. And then it was just one after another and like twenty so I
- 22:06knew something really bad had happened. And then I got a call from someone
- 22:08who told me what happened. Just just a tragedy situation. And I did
- 22:12not know the trooper at all, just knew the name. But from seeing
- 22:17Jeff, the outpouring of support for him on social media, signs and yards,
- 22:23people leaving their lights on and sport of law enforcement, UM just incredible.
- 22:29And from what I gathered, he was a very very well liked guy.
- 22:32Yeah. I grew up in Belfry, Kentucky, which is basically Williamson,
- 22:37right. I mean, just tug four Week River is all that basically
- 22:40separates there and so you're you're he grew up there and was in and out
- 22:45of Williamson, his half family and Williamson, you know, and and but
- 22:49he began his career over in the Eastern Panhandle. Okay, so he was
- 22:53a fifteen year He was a fifteen year trooper. He began his career in
- 22:56the Eastern Panhandle and actually was recognized not too it was I think twenty fifteen.
- 23:03He was recognized for saving a life after a pursuit. There was a
- 23:10pursuit that was in the Eastern panhela then went into Virginia and the guy tried
- 23:15to kill himself. He was leading police on a pursuit and he tried to
- 23:17try to kill himself and Troopermaynard came up on him and actually guy was stabbing
- 23:25himself in the neck and Trooper Remainder actually saved his life and was recognized for
- 23:30that by with a life saving award from state police. And then eventually came
- 23:37home, you know, and came to the Williamson area, and Logan too,
- 23:41he was also right. Yeah, So he came home to came home
- 23:45to southern West Virginia, to that general area where he grew up and was
- 23:51well known like he was, you know, you see things over the weekend.
- 23:52We also talked to Justin Markham, who was former state lawmaker you know
- 23:57Williamson attorney, said he would just jog or walk daily in downtown Williamson begin
- 24:03his day like that. One of our stories has some photos that the that
- 24:07the Williamson Public Library had posted of him reading the kids. You know,
- 24:11Sue just seemed like a great guy. These amount of wife and a thirteen
- 24:15year old in a nine year old now, you know. On a personal
- 24:18note, and I mentioned my high school reunions past weekend, one of the
- 24:22people I graduated Logan High with was the wife of State Police Superintended Jack Chambers,
- 24:27who was of course appointed that position following the removal resignation whatever you will,
- 24:30Jen Kale Hobby last I heard was efforting to have Jack Chambers on talk
- 24:34line today. Um Chambers wife, Yeah, sat at the table if my
- 24:40wife and I show others under class reunions past weekend, and Jack Chambers himself
- 24:44wanted to be there, but obviously cutting because he in the entire law enforcement
- 24:47community right now just crushed by this, but by this entire tragedy, so
- 24:51so so, what where's the story. Now what do we know. I
- 24:52mean, I know the gentleman of the person to use the term gentleman was
- 24:59had his arrayment, so he's in custody, so he's being held without bail.
- 25:03Uh and uh, you know he's charged with murder. But also there
- 25:07was another shooting, you know, the initial shooting. That's when that guy's
- 25:12here and Charleston injured serious but stable condition. Right, So what I think
- 25:19the next thing maybe is hopefully being able to get kind of exactly what happened
- 25:25there, you know, and what the what the circumstances were of the shooting.
- 25:30And then there'll be the memorial service this week and it's been since twenty
- 25:34twelve. Only twelve is when the two shoot Troopers were shot and killed off
- 25:40the exit there in Rome County on Ice seventy nine near the Clay County line,
- 25:45the right that they exited exactly in Rome County and they were shot and
- 25:48killed there after making an arrest. And then it was it was actually a
- 25:55year or to the night, a year to the night that Tom Baker was
- 26:00Tom Baker was killed a year ago June third, Friday night, June third,
- 26:04Deputy Baker in Nicholas County and Sergeant Maynard was killed Friday night June second,
- 26:11Friday afternoon June second in Mingo County. And so the exact I mean
- 26:19Friday, both on that Friday, the same exact day, not the date,
- 26:22but the day. And then that gives us two and a half years,
- 26:27almost exactly two and a half years, three officers have been shot and
- 26:30killed in West Virginia. You have a municipal officer, city officer Cassie Johnson,
- 26:36You've got a shriffs deputy Tom Baker, and now you have a trooper,
- 26:41Sergeant Maynard. So three and two and a half years. We also
- 26:45had an off duty police officer killed in a car crash over the weekend from
- 26:48the Morgantown area of this story about that at ww metro news dot com.
- 26:52Another tragedy jet This one was on my sixty four. Yeah yesterday, folks,
- 26:55if they were traveling at east you know, from cross Lanes in the
- 26:57Charleston or nights you're on the Charleston, you know, there's a wreck between
- 27:02Institute and Dunbar at like four thirty, right at right around four thirty eastbound,
- 27:07and the interstate was closed until like ninety five, so it was closed
- 27:12for five hours and over more than five hours, and it was a it
- 27:18was a fatal crash. And we just got information in day from the Canau
- 27:22County Sheriff's Department this was a road rage incident. So these two vehicles,
- 27:27witnesses say that the road rage happen started around Nitro and they're both driving erratically.
- 27:34She had two vehicles that were driving recklessly and erratically and it appeared to
- 27:40be a road rage situation between the two and just passed institute. One of
- 27:45the vehicles made a move like a road rage type of move and lost control
- 27:52of the vehicle, hit the retaining wall and started flipping, throwing the passenger
- 27:57out. She's a woman from miss Ray and she was killed. And so
- 28:03no charges have been filed in this by deputies, but they do say in
- 28:06the news release that they just sent out ten minutes ago, that very early
- 28:11in the investigation and they're looking for more witness information and that type of thing
- 28:15who may have witnessed. But they yeah, they called a road rage between
- 28:21two v and that's that. Literally, just that information came out, as
- 28:23you said, ten minutes before you came in here this morning. He did
- 28:26one other thing and I didn't mean to hold you for the whole show,
- 28:29but sometimes these things we need your expertise. This bizarre story out of bell
- 28:33this last week, and I touched on a briefly. Friday guy and Belle's
- 28:36mother dies and he apparently just kept the body in the house to continue to
- 28:41collecting her social Security benefits. Where does that stand? Yeah, so there
- 28:45was an autopsy on Friday, and so we're waiting to the results of that.
- 28:51You know, the man was charged with because he told police that he
- 28:56continued to take her checks after she died. He says in December that she
- 29:00died his mother there in Beil. And the way the police found out about
- 29:04is they're serving an eviction notice and I think quite asi they just smelled you
- 29:11know, in police officers know what. That smelled him absolutely, and so
- 29:14they detected the smell and then they followed up on it. That was that
- 29:18was Thursday when they were serving the eviction notice, and so there was a
- 29:22process server from the Sheriff's office. Then the deputies in the mbail police and
- 29:26the deputies arrival scene and found the woman's body and the sun hiding in the
- 29:33closet. So now he's just been charged so far with the cashing of the
- 29:40checks, but they say the investigation is on going. So the autopsy,
- 29:45they would hope that he said that she died in December. They hope to
- 29:49find out from the autopsy when she died and how she died, and then
- 29:52that's going to determine whether he faces any additional charges or not. I mean
- 29:59he could probably. The least of which he could with base would be just
- 30:02not disposing of a corpse, you know. I mean that just and his
- 30:06story has got national attention now, I mean it's just unbelievable. Yeah,
- 30:10exactly. So um yeah, So there there's more to be said about that
- 30:15and about their investigation. I think is the autopsy will reveal a lot to
- 30:18the officers to see what's the next step. All right, Jeff, appreciate
- 30:22you stopping buying lots lots to come and kN Krper got out of the hospital.
- 30:26I was going to mention that a little bit. Yeah, Ken Carper
- 30:27is out of the hospital now. So now we just kind of play the
- 30:30I guess the waiting. But first of all, best wishes for commissioner restricted.
- 30:36The commissioner is going to be restricted for several weeks. And so yeah,
- 30:41we'll see where the other goes. Yeah, all right, Jeff,
- 30:41I appreciate it. Man. Thanks all right, Jeff Jenkins from the newsroom,
- 30:45twenty two minutes away from ten Now. I mentioned on about Jack Chambers
- 30:49being on Hoppy Today. Also on the show today, State Senator Amy Grady's
- 30:53going to be on the show, plus Chris Starwaltimore talking on with Hoppy.

- 35:23thing is it's nothing changes around here. That's that's very That's more true than
- 35:29you know. Uh, let me get this in. On Friday show was
- 35:31my pleasure to welcome in Chef Paul Smith ten ten and to pitch Ellen's ice
- 35:36cream. The watch party to see how the chef fairs and the James Beard
- 35:39Awards ceremony in Chicago is happening to night at Capital Market. The director of
- 35:44the Capital Market, Evan Osborne, was on the show along with the Chef
- 35:46Paul and Friday. We have a story posted about at wv metro news dot
- 35:51com. Chef Paul up for the title Best Chef Southeast at the James Beard
- 35:54Awards. It's night in Chicago. The folks at Capital Market are having a
- 35:59watch part. The awards are not being shown on television. They'll be shown
- 36:02probably at some point, and you know it'll be covered by the News and
- 36:06so on and so forth. So if you want to see it live,
- 36:08going to Capital Market is the only way to see it live. And Matt,
- 36:13this is the Oscars, It's the Grammys or the Heisman Trophy presentation for
- 36:16the culinary arts, a big deal for the Charleston area. The party is
- 36:21tonight six or nine at Capital Market. Any proceeds from ticket sales would go
- 36:24to the Red Cross and back to Capital Market. And I spoke with Evan
- 36:29from Capital Market about ten minutes before I went on the air. There are
- 36:31about fifteen tickets left. Now, that was as of an hour ago,
- 36:35there were fifteen tickets left. So if you want to go tonight, the
- 36:38only place that you can see it live, you better go and better contact
- 36:43to folks at Capital Market. Yeah, I mean it is. It's one
- 36:45of the more exciting things to happen in a long time individually for Jeff Paul
- 36:50obviously, but for the city and for our state. I mean, I
- 36:52have friends who literally travel around the country for to go to restaurants where James
- 36:59Beard Ward nominees are at. And I've had three or four who've text me
- 37:01and go, which restaurant should I go to? And they're coming to town
- 37:05just to eat at his restaurants, and that's I mean, that's not only
- 37:07great for the city, but it's just great for him. You can't couldn't
- 37:12happen to a better person, right, He has worked as hard as somebody
- 37:14who's from here. That's right, went all over and then came back.
- 37:17Yeah, that's that's that's to me, that's the great part about the story.
- 37:20Man. Yeah, came back and then really got hyper local with everything
- 37:23that he's done. Right, So it's not just you know, having restaurants
- 37:27in town, but also and now I know he's down helping some folks in
- 37:30Louisburg, but also using local ingredients, hiring local people. It's just been
- 37:34it's been an amazing story and certainly happy that he's getting a recognition that he
- 37:37deserves. Um win or lose. We all certainly hope he wins, but
- 37:40if not, this is a tremendous honor and something that's well deserved and will
- 37:45only continue to grow for him. And Sydney Charleston is gonna yeah, you
- 37:50know, as I said, wishing him about really all the all of this
- 37:52party wishing him the best, but you're also going to plan on using him
- 37:55if he wins two for marketing purposes, well, I think regardless. Actually,
- 38:00at this point, all you really need is that nominee behind him say
- 38:06yeah, so, I mean, yeah, yeah. You go to you
- 38:07know, you watch shows like Top Chef or stuff like that, and you
- 38:09know a lot of them will mention James Beard. Most of them just say
- 38:12nominee, right, most of them having one because not that many people win.
- 38:15I mean, it's just to your point, like Oscars, it's not
- 38:16like everybody gets a trophy, right, this is you know, you you
- 38:19were there only a handful of winners for the whole thing, just to be
- 38:22part of it, to make it this far. It's just it's almost unbelievable
- 38:25because I think we're so used to it. We all ate as restaurants,
- 38:29we all see him all the time. He's out talks to everybody. You
- 38:30know, he's not a Sometimes you think of these chefs that win these awards
- 38:34and you think they're kind of you know, big and all over the country
- 38:37and in New York and you're not attainable. But you can see Chef Paul
- 38:39walking on Capital Street, right, and he is such a nice guy.
- 38:44And one of the things I like about him too, as kind of a
- 38:46foodie as I am. He's not a food snob, no, you know,
- 38:50because I listened to him a lot. He's on on on Hotline with
- 38:52the with Cooping and Dave Weekley, and he's not above I mean, he
- 38:55doesn't have to necessarily, you know, be five star quality food. He's
- 39:00not above talking about fast food. From time to time we're talking about a
- 39:02simple hamburger or something like that. He's not a food snob. Bundy Stretch
- 39:07of the imagination. Lots going on in the city, getting close to Regatta
- 39:09Town. It's getting close to regattas tign Festival first, right, so festival
- 39:13starts this weekend. I know McKenzie's in here last week, but we got
- 39:15that going and then we got through Pride this weekend, which was a great
- 39:20event. We had the State of High School Baseball tournament in town and then
- 39:22we go into Festival. Then we take a deep breath, and then we
- 39:25go into Regatta and then right after that we take another deep breath go right
- 39:30into Multifest. So it's it's gonna be exciting. But we were out last
- 39:34week with the mayor and a couple of folks from our Regatta team, just
- 39:37walking around downtown trying to get everything, our eyes on everything. You know,
- 39:40having done it once, now we've learned a lot. But it's still
- 39:44daunting task, but it's exciting. Five Live Broad two Party about Husbands Pizza

- 40:01city on weekends. How's the outdoor dining thingle? It's been great. I
- 40:04mean this past weekend. I came down Saturday afternoon, I think it was
- 40:07when I was walking around at Pride, and then I went over and looked
- 40:09and it's just jam packed. And I mean even Friday night was crowded.
- 40:14A couple of friends of mine who were we're supposed to meet over at the
- 40:15Levy. They said they just never left their table over at Pozzo Pint.
- 40:20It's kept eating and kept drinking. So I said, well that's just as
- 40:22good. So as long as you're downtown having fun. But it's been it's
- 40:24really excited. I mean, obviously we've had great weather, but I think
- 40:29this this Friday is the tribute band of the Who, John Ingram's Tribute band
- 40:32of the Who, So that'll be another big crowd. That's been two great
- 40:36crowds for Live and the Levey so far. Yeah, and the weather's been
- 40:37great, and I looked at the extended forecast early in the week for other
- 40:40reasons, I think it looks pretty good as we had towards the weekend.

- 41:07This one came in at the beginning of the show, so it usually means
- 41:09somebody's got something important to say. Text says question from Matt Sutton. Over
- 41:14the weekend, the city worked with Rainbow Pride of West Virginia, a prominent
- 41:16LGBTQ plus special interest group, to put on an event advertise as all ages,
- 41:22that included drag performances at Slack Park. Please ask why it's in the
- 41:25city's interest to have a drag show which is inherently sexual by definition, and
- 41:30a public area for children with no age restrictions, and what the mayor feels
- 41:34the minimum age for children attending a drag show on public property should be,
- 41:37if any Well, I think that it would. First of all, I
- 41:42think you could describe Pride as a Rainbow Pride, the special interest group.
- 41:46I think they're a group who represents people of all you know, of all
- 41:52inclusivity around this state and around this country. But most importantly, it's a
- 41:55community event, and it is a community for everybody. Anything that occurs into
- 41:59a park is community event. And that's one of the great things about Pride.
- 42:02As to the age of children, that's up to their parents. I
- 42:05mean, that's up to the parents who want to come down and bring them
- 42:07to the event. They know what's happening, they know what's going on.
- 42:10I don't think there should be any age restriction for people who come to events.
- 42:14We don't have age restrictions on any of our events. Obviously you can't
- 42:16drink alcohol and things like that. But if you want to come down with
- 42:20your family and enjoy a great community event, please do so. But that's
- 42:23up to each individual family as to how they want to, you know,
- 42:28make their make their children aware of what's going on in their community from every
- 42:32instance. But that's up to the parents. It's our job to be an
- 42:35inclusive city and we've done that since since the day that we took over.
- 42:37I think Charles has been inclusive city long before very Goodwin took over, and
- 42:42it's been one of those cities where we really want to make sure people understand
- 42:45that we are here for everyone and we are a place where people can come
- 42:49and feel safe. To have an event like that over the last Friday and
- 42:52Saturday in our city and you know, as big as it was, as
- 42:55advertised it was. You know, these are amazing events. But somebody,

- 43:01sometimes you get worried because sometimes these events have had bad consequences in other areas.
- 43:06Bad actors have come in and tried to cause problems from everything from just
- 43:09trying to start fights to running cars through crowds to shooting people, and we

- 47:13for the Good One Administration, is here, Texas. I have a neighbor
- 47:16off Hickory Road who shows all the signs of dealing drugs. A lot of
- 47:20traffic comes and goes several overdoses from the home numerous calls to police for various
- 47:23disturbances. All the neighbors will leave this to be a drug house. Isn't
- 47:28there any way to stop this? Yes? I think if you continue to
- 47:30if you continue to call the police if there's stuff that's happening, if you
- 47:35can call the police when there's actually something happening you believe something's happening, that
- 47:37I'll be much more beneficial. Also understand that sometimes that your calls into the
- 47:43police are are leading into an investigation that you might not necessarily be aware of,
- 47:46but that they are working. Not familiar with this exact house, but
- 47:51I believe, I actually I believe I know which one it is if it's
- 47:53the one I'm thinking of what we've gotten calls about. But continue to call
- 47:55the police and understand that they might be working on something that you might not
- 48:00necessarily know. Also, if you do think there are overdoses, you can
- 48:02also reach out to the Care office that they can help out, or the
- 48:05Charleston Fire Department they can help out as well. Texas. So Sutton is
- 48:07saying Danny Jones wasn't inclusive. Actually, that's the exact opposite of what you
- 48:12said about what I said at all. I think Mary Jones was very inclusive
- 48:15and Charleston was on top of the list of passing inclusivity and anti discrimination laws
- 48:19long before we took over office Texas inclusive question mark the Rifleman plaque was removed
- 48:24that excludes part of the community. Well, I think the Rifleman plaque was.
- 48:29It was removed, and it was removed for a lot of variety of
- 48:31reasons. But it still exists and it was trying to be donated to museum.
- 48:36As we speak, tex says a drag show is not by definition sexual
- 48:39in nature. Now Hooters is. Thank goodness, the den of inequity has
- 48:44closed and my right prior texture, I can't watch Missus Doubtfire because Robin Williams
- 48:50and drag is just too sexualized. I think that may be sarcasm, I
- 48:52think so. I don't think that was directed to me. I think it
- 48:54was for I think it was sent to the previous textra Man. We get
- 48:59a lot of calls and text about this anything new with the town center,
- 49:02So no, I don't really have a big update. We are moving forward,
- 49:07continue to move forward and talking with the county on the Capital Sports Center.
- 49:09Uh And I think you'll see some action the next couple of weeks.
- 49:13We do have to have we did have to have sort of setting up a
- 49:16an entity or a governing body for a joint county and city development. So
- 49:22I think that you'll see you'll see movement start on that. But as for
- 49:24the town Center itself, um, I haven't spoken with the whole group in
- 49:29quite some time, other than what as it relates to, you know,
- 49:30a while back with the Capital Sports Center, But I don't have any updates
- 49:34other than we can will continue to move forward with the Capital Sports Center in
- 49:37and around them all. I mean, there's not really at this point much
- 49:39that the city can do as far as the retail part of the that's that's
- 49:45in the model of the whole court at this point, and they and they
- 49:46have it down a whole lot since they I mean, I don't know what
- 49:49they're going on. That's not fair to say I don't know what's going on
- 49:52behind the scenes, but I mean, at least on the outwardly appearances,
- 49:55they haven't really done a whole lot, and the in the city at this
- 49:58point on that particular part matter done pretty much all they can do. Yeah,
- 50:00Well, I mean, we'll continue to work with the whole group.
- 50:02If they have any interest in working with us, I think that, you
- 50:05know they. I think the inside of them all looks better than it has
- 50:07in the past. But in terms of bringing in the retail, I'm not
- 50:10aware of what's going on behind the scenes as well, but I do know
- 50:13from our perspective, we believe that if if government at all levels invest in
- 50:17and around areas which there could be strong economic development, that's what our job
- 50:22isn't. We don't tell private businesses what to do, but we invest in
- 50:24spaces that allow private business to grow. Texas LGBTQ, drag queens. It's
- 50:30just like that old serpent. To corrupt God's natural order justified however, you
- 50:34will will end up just like sodom Ingle Mora says, a texture's texture back
- 50:37to the plaques. Has just restored the plaque on the site where it can
- 50:40be seen and not hidden in a museum. I don't think in a museum
- 50:44is hidden, but yeah, so it'll it's being nonated to a museum.
- 50:46I know we're still working on it all right. To me close with this,
- 50:49I want to go back to the death of the State Trooper Friday from
- 50:51Ingo County, matt law enforcement everywhere everywhere, as well as a general public.
- 50:54Everybody packed by this. I know the Charleston Police Department was hit hard
- 50:59as well, losing a brother like that. Yeah. Absolutely, Chief Hunt
- 51:02text the Mari and myself Friday night and just you can and then we start
- 51:06talking to him. You can hear it in their voices. It's always just
- 51:08you know, police officers are seen, as I know, being these very
- 51:13tough and sort of bravado type individuals, but they're human meansions like everybody else,
- 51:16and they're fragile, just like everybody else. And this really hits home
- 51:20anytime it happens, especially when it happens on something that seems to be avoidable
- 51:24and not from the police officer perspective, just from the society's perspective. And
- 51:29it's really a sad situation. I know our officers went down there, and
- 51:31you know, Chief Hunt went down to the hospital and as anything, is
- 51:35there anything that you know when we've lost our officer here, it's not law
- 51:37enforcement from just one area, it's from all across the region, across the
- 51:40country that come together and support each other. And that will happen here,
- 51:44I'm certain. Yeah, absolutely, Matt. It's always players to talk to
- 51:46you. Man. We didn't even get to talk old school wrestling, no,
- 51:49but we'll get the We're got a championship wrestling, right, We're got
- 51:52a pro wrestling coming up soon sponsored by Parmar, so we're excited. Yeah,
- 51:53well yeah, we'll talk about that coming up, all right, Matt,
- 51:57thanks lot for being here. Tomorrow Courtney Smith from the Small Business Deistration
- 52:00will stop by, and also Charleston City councilant emme at Pepper talking scooters tomorrow.
- 52:06Uh. Can you keep up with the news today, w Metronews dot
