- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:20Happy Monday. So before I get into the stories
- 0:24for today, I wanted to give you guys a little update because
- 0:27tomorrow instead of a typical Mini Scroll episode, I have an
- 0:32interview coming for you guys with a Stan account that I have
- 0:38spoken about on this podcast before.
- 0:40They reached out to us. They saw that I spoke about them
- 0:44a while ago and they wanted to come on the pod and it took a
- 0:47little while to make it happen, but we made it happen.
- 0:50I'm so excited for you guys to hear this interview.
- 0:52I've actually never interviewed like a someone who runs like a
- 0:56celebrity update account, a Stan account.
- 0:58I feel like it's such a unique kind of way to immerse yourself
- 1:04in Internet culture and the creator economy.
- 1:06And it was a really insightful, interesting conversation.
- 1:09I'm excited for you guys to hear that.
- 1:10But if you have any guesses on who I could be interviewing, put
- 1:13them down below. All right, let's just get into
- 1:16the stories for today. So the first story of course we
- 1:21need to talk about the Mike Tyson versus Jake Paul boxing
- 1:25fight and how it was kind of a flop.
- 1:28So over the weekend, 58 year old Mike Tyson fought 27 year old
- 1:32Jake Paul in a boxing match. As sports experts predicted,
- 1:37Jake won, which was sad for all of us.
- 1:42I mean, I, I saw a lot of my friends watch and they were
- 1:46like, you know, I couldn't believe that Jake Paul won.
- 1:49Like, this must have been rigged.
- 1:50But there was such an age difference.
- 1:53Jake has been training and fighting professionally as a
- 1:56boxer now for years. If you watched it, you would
- 1:59have noticed. But like, it seems like Mike
- 2:02Tyson was just so like tired. He just gave off like
- 2:05melancholy, like he just didn't really care.
- 2:08I wasn't surprised that Jake won, but I was sad that Jake
- 2:11won. So even though he did win,
- 2:12basically no one was rooting for him.
- 2:15He was booed by the stadium of almost 80,000 people when he
- 2:19entered. By the way, he entered on a car
- 2:22and Logan, his brother was sitting beside him like spraying
- 2:24this body spray all over him the whole time.
- 2:26I presume that they are sponsored by it or like have
- 2:29some type of investment and I don't think they own it.
- 2:32At first I was like, is he spraying like Prime on him?
- 2:35Anyways? I don't know.
- 2:36He was spraying like this body spray.
- 2:38It was just, it was so cringe. I actually reposted a TikTok
- 2:41that was like, men, women are so dramatic.
- 2:44Also men. And then it was just a video of
- 2:47Jake entering the stadium on this car with Logan beside him,
- 2:50like spraying him. I was like, that is literally
- 2:52perfect. So it did break Netflix records.
- 2:5560 million households reportedly tuned in for this, but according
- 3:00to many reports, it seems that a lot of people tuned in in the
- 3:03hopes of watching Mike Tyson destroy Jake Paul.
- 3:07And that's why I tuned in. I knew it was far fetched, but I
- 3:09was still hopeful that Jake would get absolutely annihilated
- 3:13and embarrassed. And unfortunately that's not
- 3:15what happened. But overall, the reception to
- 3:17this fight was so underwhelming. I think there was a lot of hype
- 3:21leading up to IT. People were like really excited
- 3:23to watch it and just to see like how it went down and to put it
- 3:27frankly, it was just like really boring.
- 3:29So as Kelsey Weakman writes for Yahoo quote, the fight itself
- 3:33was depressing and difficult to watch.
- 3:35The people I spoke to who were anticipating a quick and violent
- 3:38showing from Tyson were horribly disappointed.
- 3:41It was immediately apparent that he was tired, and in return Paul
- 3:44wasn't fighting him very hard. That continued for all eight of
- 3:48the abbreviated 2 minute rounds. At a press conference after the
- 3:51fight, Paul said he never felt Tyson's power.
- 3:55And I think that sums it up. I actually left in the middle of
- 3:58the fight to take a shower because that's how bored I was.
- 4:00And to be fair, I'm not a sports girlie, but I found it so
- 4:04boring. I also couldn't get over how
- 4:06much hugging there is in boxing. I posted about this on my
- 4:09Instagram story but I had to Google like why is there so much
- 4:12hugging and boxing? I didn't realize.
- 4:14I mean, I don't know, I don't really watch boxing.
- 4:16But like they just kept hugging and I was like, this is actually
- 4:19kind of like romantic and cute like these like alpha male Bros
- 4:24who are like sweaty and topless just like engaged in all of
- 4:28these embraces publicly for millions of people to watch.
- 4:31I thought that was beautiful. OK, the next word that I have is
- 4:37I need to break down the Samantha and Cecily Bachman
- 4:40pyjama drama. So Samantha and Cecily are mommy
- 4:45and parenting influencers who I think are sister in law's
- 4:49sisters in law. Sisters in law.
- 4:52I think they are married to brothers.
- 4:54So last week they launched a brand called For the MEMS that
- 4:58sells holiday themed pyjamas and these pyjamas were priced at
- 5:03$97.00 a set. Now I actually do want to
- 5:06preface by saying Cecily was just in some drama.
- 5:09So she has kind of like a bad reputation at the moment.
- 5:12I mean I don't know, maybe she always has a bad reputation.
- 5:14I wasn't really familiar with her until the hurricane
- 5:17situation in Florida. So she was posting about how her
- 5:20family was like going on a family trip to Florida and they
- 5:23weren't going to cancel their trip despite all of the
- 5:25evacuation orders. And people in Florida like
- 5:29saying, we don't have anywhere to stay.
- 5:30Like, please, if you're like booking a hotel and like on your
- 5:33vacation, like give that room to someone that lives in Florida
- 5:36and it needs to evacuate. Anyways, her family did go to
- 5:39Florida, and I believe they left like a day or two after because
- 5:42then there were like, official evacuation orders.
- 5:44And she ended up apologizing and saying, well, I don't know if it
- 5:48was like a full apology, but she did end up admitting that it was
- 5:51like a mistake to go on her vacation.
- 5:53So that was still fairly recent, right?
- 5:55So in the court of public opinion, people are not really
- 5:59loving her right now. Then she launched these PJS for
- 6:01$97.00 a set. This had people mad.
- 6:05Then people did a quality check. So like went on the website,
- 6:08wanted to see what it was made of.
- 6:09Maybe these are high end luxury items.
- 6:11So it doesn't seem like that. So the pyjamas are made of
- 6:15polyester and rayon, first of all.
- 6:17And then when you go on the website, the marketing is kind
- 6:22of crazy. So the pajamas are wrinkled in
- 6:25like almost every single product photo.
- 6:28And I actually can't describe it.
- 6:30You just have to go and look. It looks like they were in
- 6:33plastic bags. Like, you know those bags that
- 6:35you get like clothes in from fast fashion, Like they opened
- 6:38them up and like no one steamed them, no one ironed them.
- 6:42Whoever was doing their product photography didn't give a flying
- 6:44fuck. And one person, I haven't, I
- 6:46wasn't able to verify this myself.
- 6:48I couldn't find this photo, but one person shared a photo where
- 6:51it looked like there was hair stuck to the PJ's and it was
- 6:55photographed and apparently posted on the website.
- 6:59So then Samantha and Cecily, amid all this backlash, lowered
- 7:02the price to $75 and claimed that they wouldn't make a profit
- 7:05even if they sold out from this. So who knows about this
- 7:09obviously, but Reddit and TikTok have done some digging and it
- 7:12seems like the products likely cost them between $8 and $22.00
- 7:17to manufacture. Now when they say that they
- 7:20won't make any money if they lower it to $75, I'm going to
- 7:24say that's probably not like an outright lie.
- 7:26They're probably considering everything that it took to
- 7:28launch the brand, like price wise, right?
- 7:30So like paying for the photo shoot, paying for their website,
- 7:34the marketing, all of that stuff.
- 7:36I'm assuming that's what they're considering when they're saying
- 7:38like we won't make a profit, they'll break even or whatever
- 7:41on everything that they've spent on this launch.
- 7:43OK, But then it gets more interesting because over the
- 7:48weekend, another big creator named Gabby Egan posted that she
- 7:52had purchased the PJS to give a review, partly because of all
- 7:56the drama surrounding them. She was like, I'm just going to
- 7:58bite the bullet and pay for these.
- 7:59But also because she has been considering launching her own
- 8:03pajamas, and she's been talking to manufacturers, and she wanted
- 8:06to manufacture bamboo pajamas, but they were going to be too
- 8:08expensive. So she was like, I just want to
- 8:10see what all the fuss is about these pajamas.
- 8:13I'm in the market to manufacture my own.
- 8:15I'm going to buy them and give you guys a review.
- 8:18She didn't say anything about what she anticipated the quality
- 8:21to be. She didn't say that she was
- 8:23going to post any type of bias review.
- 8:25She was just like, I want to see what they're like.
- 8:27One day later, Gabby got an e-mail that her order was
- 8:29cancelled. And then when she posted a video
- 8:32about her order getting cancelled, Samantha commented on
- 8:35this video. Samantha wrote we cancelled one
- 8:38because we were informed the order was placed with intent to
- 8:41post post a negative review regardless of the quality of the
- 8:44product. It's defamation and malicious
- 8:47intent. Again, she never said she was
- 8:50going to post a negative review. And then Samantha DM D her and
- 8:55in the DM she said we were informed that you posted on
- 8:58Reddit before you even received the order that you were intended
- 9:01to leave a bad review regardless of the quality, which is a
- 9:05crime. So Gabby's like I don't even
- 9:07have Reddit. She's like, I have one Reddit
- 9:09account to to lurk my own snark Reddit, but I've never posted on
- 9:13Reddit. Like I don't I've never
- 9:14commented. So I'm assuming they saw her
- 9:17video where she was like, I'm going to buy them and post a
- 9:20review and they got scared because she has a really big
- 9:22following. They were possibly worried
- 9:24because of the size of her following.
- 9:26Like this was already kind of out of control, right?
- 9:28Like the narrative around these PJS and like the drama around
- 9:31these PJS was like spiraling. And I think they worried that
- 9:35somebody was such a big following, if she did give a
- 9:38less than positive review, that this would just keep going.
- 9:41It would just get bigger and bigger.
- 9:43So I presume that they thought she was going to like jump on
- 9:47the hate train and they wanted to stop that.
- 9:50I do think that they believed she was going to give them a
- 9:53negative review. I'm not sure if that's just
- 9:55because they don't believe in the quality of their products or
- 9:57if it's just because there's just so much negativity coming
- 10:00at them right now that any type of feedback that they received,
- 10:04even if it's completely neutral, the way that she's like, I'm
- 10:07just going to buy them and give you guys a review.
- 10:09They have this like negativity bias right now towards
- 10:12everything because it is like blowing up around them.
- 10:16That's maybe giving them the benefit of the doubt.
- 10:18And I think this is just an example of like, if you are not
- 10:22a luxury like aspirational influencer, unfortunately you
- 10:26probably cannot launch anything that is in that category because
- 10:30it doesn't align with your brand.
- 10:32And that's not to say that people wouldn't pay $97.00 for a
- 10:36set of PJ's. They would, they would pay
- 10:38$97.00 for a set of PJ's launched by like Sophia Ritchie
- 10:42that would get no backlash. You know, but from 2 mommy
- 10:46bloggers who are like sharing what it's like to be a stay at
- 10:49home mom and tips for parenting and you know, showing this kind
- 10:52of like wholesome family life. You know, their followers are
- 10:55probably everyday mothers, you know, maybe a lot of stay at
- 10:59home moms who are living off of 1 income if they are stay at
- 11:02home moms. Like it's just it's off brand.
- 11:05It didn't make sense for like who they're targeting and the
- 11:08type of content they post. I feel like maybe like Rachel
- 11:10Parcell could launch $97.00 pyjamas and it would go over OK.
- 11:14Because again, she leans much more into that aspirational
- 11:18luxury influencer like mommy vlogger influencer vibe.
- 11:22Even though she is posting like not similar content, but she is
- 11:26posting, you know, that kind of like parenting mom content, but
- 11:29it's from a different angle, you know, OK, and the last story
- 11:33that I have for you guys, you know, I love to sometimes end on
- 11:36like a little TikTok trend. So I wanted to talk about the
- 11:39latest TikTok trend that is like all over my for you page.
- 11:42I'm sure some of you guys have seen it too, but the women in
- 11:44male fields trend. OK, so this is just a trend for
- 11:48the girls. If you are a boy, don't do this
- 11:50fucking trend. OK, I'm going to talk about how
- 11:51men are like trying to Co opt it.
- 11:53Don't. So women are posting these quick
- 11:56little stories about times when they've basically given men a
- 11:59taste of their own medicine in relationships or dating.
- 12:03So these videos are always set to a Nicki Minaj song.
- 12:06And it's just like a single frame video of the woman
- 12:08laughing or like kissing at the camera or just doing something
- 12:12like really mundane like sipping their coffee or something with
- 12:15the text over top of the screen explaining her story.
- 12:18And that it ends with the hashtag women in male fields.
- 12:21And you put the hashtag on the video as well as in the.
- 12:24So let me read you some examples so you can understand.
- 12:27OK so one of the examples is when he says I'm a medical
- 12:30student and I say oh cool, what kind of nurse do you want to be?
- 12:33Hashtag women and male fields. When he said he liked F1.
- 12:37So I asked what DRS stood for and told him he only likes the
- 12:41sport for the drivers Hashtag women in male fields responding
- 12:46when asked how my weekend was with my son's dad was sick so I
- 12:49was stuck on mom duty all weekend.
- 12:51Hashtag women in male fields He sent me a paragraph explaining
- 12:55how he felt and I replied with IDK what you want me to say RN.
- 12:59Hashtag women in male fields OK so you probably you get the
- 13:03gist. So these stories obviously a lot
- 13:06of them are not true. I'm sure they're just kind of
- 13:09women, like making jokes about different ways that they've been
- 13:13treated, the ways that men speak to them, the ways that men speak
- 13:16about their roles in society, gender roles and kind of
- 13:20flipping it, right? So men are getting defensive in
- 13:24the comment sections of these videos trying to defend their
- 13:27bad behavior. And I think that actually makes
- 13:29it even better. It like drives the point home
- 13:32even more. And now, of course, because we
- 13:35can't have nice things, men are flipping this, taking this and
- 13:38like flipping it themselves, using it against us and
- 13:42basically creating their own version of this trend for
- 13:45themselves. Do not do this.
- 13:47This is a trend for women. Fuck off.
- 13:50Just like let us have this like men, especially in relationships
- 13:55and dating, which is what a lot of these are like, most of them
- 13:58are related to that. Like men are so shit.
- 14:01Like just let us enjoy the commiseration together in like a
- 14:06funny, lighthearted, jovial way. Like truly fuck off.
- 14:11OK anyways guys that's it for mini scroll today.
- 14:15Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate review
- 14:17and subscribe. It helps me so much.
- 14:19Please star rate US on Spotify. I'm trying to get our Spotify
- 14:22reviews up. I love you guys and there will
- 14:25be the amazing interview tomorrow and then I will talk to
- 14:30you on Wednesday. OK, bye.
