1:58
Speaker 3: Get into that a little bit later on. Plus, if
2:02
Speaker 3: if you follow politics here in West Virginia. You very
2:04
Speaker 3: well know about the popular news show Inside West Virginia Politics,
2:09
Speaker 3: seen locally here in WWK TV thirteen. That is, unless
2:12
Speaker 3: you have Optimum cable, which at the current time it's
2:14
Speaker 3: not seen there. More than that a little bit later on.
2:16
Speaker 3: But getting back to the point here, longtime friend of
2:19
Speaker 3: the show and host of the show of that show,
2:21
Speaker 3: Mark Curtis has retired and moved off to Sunny Florida. Well,
2:24
Speaker 3: his replacement has been named, and it's a name that's
2:26
Speaker 3: a should be pretty familiar with longtime listeners of this
2:29
Speaker 3: radio station. Rick Johnson RJ, as we know him, Rick
2:34
Speaker 3: Johnson taken to the hosting duties from Mark Curtis on
2:36
Speaker 3: that show. We're going to talk to RJ about that
2:38
Speaker 3: a little bit later on, plus several other things to
2:40
Speaker 3: get to, including the weather and a tragic story from
2:44
Speaker 3: over the weekend here in Charleston. What appears on a

Speaker 3: five zero zero a well, this past Thursday night during
3:00
Speaker 3: they're regularly scheduled meeting the Kanawh County Commission. Uh, very
3:04
Speaker 3: very busy, Natalie Tennant to Coreceiite being the first ever
3:08
Speaker 3: Kanawh County Commissioner in the body's history. But it wasn't
3:11
Speaker 3: the only news, as we now have a new County
3:13
Speaker 3: Commission president. It is Ben Selango and he joins us. Now,
3:16
Speaker 3: good morning, sir, good morning, Thank you for me well,
3:20
Speaker 3: thanks for being here. Thanks for being here, mister Commission president.
3:23
Speaker 3: Oh no, just call me Ben, call all right. So right,
3:27
Speaker 3: let me add So how are this is going to
3:29
Speaker 3: be a very very simple question. But I'm a simple guy.
3:32
Speaker 3: How are presidents chosen? I mean it rotates, uh named
3:36
Speaker 3: John out of a hat? Is like a foot race
3:39
Speaker 3: has to strength. I mean, it's it's a vote.
3:41
Speaker 6: Every January, we do the organizational meeting and uh we
3:45
Speaker 6: vote and okay, it's it's not really something that you
3:50
Speaker 6: I mean, we don't really lobby for it. It's not
3:53
Speaker 6: it's never really been kind of a Honestly, it's never
3:57
Speaker 6: been a big deal. The commission president sets the agenda,
3:59
Speaker 6: but his historically, we've always anytime a commissioner wants something
4:03
Speaker 6: on the agenda, they can get it there. That doesn't
4:06
Speaker 6: mean they're going to win the vote, but they can
4:08
Speaker 6: certainly get it on the agenda. So, I mean, it's
4:11
Speaker 6: a it's a title. It really doesn't care the vote,
4:14
Speaker 6: doesn't weigh anymore than the other two commissioners. It's it's
4:17
Speaker 6: just a title. So you say it's it's a lot,
4:19
Speaker 6: it's a lot more work. You know, commissioned President Lance,
4:22
Speaker 6: we either did a he did a great job over
4:24
Speaker 6: the last year. I mean, Lance is as sharp as attack,
4:29
Speaker 6: very hard working and did a great job as president.
4:33
Speaker 4: You know.
4:33
Speaker 6: He came in at a time when there was a
4:35
Speaker 6: lot going on, the kind of commission we had, you know,
4:38
Speaker 6: there was just a lot going on, and he stepped
4:40
Speaker 6: up and really took the reins and spent a lot
4:44
Speaker 6: of time, you know, making sure that the budget was
4:48
Speaker 6: worked out, that we didn't have any issues, and and uh, yeah,
4:52
Speaker 6: he did a wonderful job.
4:53
Speaker 3: But you are now the president.
4:56
Speaker 6: Yes, as of Thursday night, they voted me the President's
5:00
Speaker 6: So when I leave here, I'm going to head out
5:02
Speaker 6: to the County Commission and we're gonna start talking about budgets.
5:05
Speaker 3: All the fun stuff, the fun stuff. I want to
5:08
Speaker 3: talk for a moment about Natalie Tenant being added to
5:10
Speaker 3: the commission thus becoming been the first female commissioner in
5:14
Speaker 3: the history of Kanawha County. In programming note, I was
5:17
Speaker 3: texting with Commissioner Tenant on Friday. I'll try to have
5:19
Speaker 3: her on this show, probably later this week when she
5:21
Speaker 3: can get her schedule straight. Now, but let's talk about
5:24
Speaker 3: adding Natalie Tenant to the team.
5:25
Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, Natalie has got so much energy and
5:28
Speaker 6: she is She's an incredibly hard worker, lots of ideas,
5:32
Speaker 6: so I'm excited to have her on. She obviously is
5:35
Speaker 6: the first female, so she's gonna have a unique perspective.
5:37
Speaker 3: Isn't that hard to believe though, in the entire history
5:40
Speaker 3: of Kanawac County. I mean, if somebody brought that up
5:42
Speaker 3: to me the other in the entire history of Kanawha County,
5:45
Speaker 3: largest county in the state, that she's the first female.
5:49
Speaker 6: And we also we elected the first female prosecutor. Okay,
5:52
Speaker 6: there had never been a female prosecutor at Connaw County history.
5:54
Speaker 6: So a lot of people don't know this, but Knaw
5:56
Speaker 6: County is older than the state of West Virginia. I mean,
5:58
Speaker 6: knag County was was part of Virginia and is I
6:03
Speaker 6: think around seventy five years older than the state. And
6:05
Speaker 6: so if you go back, I mean you're talking about
6:07
Speaker 6: two hundred and some years where Kennall County has been around.
6:10
Speaker 6: There's never been a female commissioner or a female prosecutor.
6:14
Speaker 6: And that changed both at you know, at the same time.
6:19
Speaker 6: And so yeah, we're anxious to and debrahsn is going
6:21
Speaker 6: to do a great job and has been doing a
6:23
Speaker 6: great job. And I think Natalie's going to bring a
6:26
Speaker 6: lot to the table. Natalie likes to understand how things work,
6:30
Speaker 6: and so she really gets down to the nitty gritty
6:32
Speaker 6: and to the details of every issue. And she's already
6:36
Speaker 6: started doing that well.
6:37
Speaker 3: And she's somebody who's former secretary of State. She brings
6:40
Speaker 3: a journalism aspect into it as a former TV news anchor,
6:44
Speaker 3: and then she's run for other offices in the States,
6:47
Speaker 3: So she brings a lot to the table.
6:49
Speaker 6: She does, and she has a statewide perspective. I mean,
6:52
Speaker 6: given that she was the Secretary of State for so long,
6:55
Speaker 6: I mean, she knows elections, she understands budget. She'll do
6:59
Speaker 6: a great job I think and brings a lot of
7:03
Speaker 6: energy and a lot of unique experience to the Commission.
7:07
Speaker 3: Talking with the new County Commission President here in Kanawk County,
7:10
Speaker 3: Ben Selango, but Dave Island showing five Any Life brought
7:12
Speaker 3: to you in part by Hustin's Pizza. This month at
7:14
Speaker 3: your favorite Hustin's, get a large at Nitch Pepperoni Pizza
7:17
Speaker 3: and any pizza bowl only twenty two to ninety nine.
7:20
Speaker 3: Find your nearest Hustans for delivery pickupper dined in at
7:22
Speaker 3: Hustons Pizza dot com. So what is it that's got
7:24
Speaker 3: Kanawha County Commission President Bensulango excited about the county going
7:28
Speaker 3: into twenty twenty five.
7:29
Speaker 6: We've got a lot of projects going on and both
7:31
Speaker 6: the exciting and nervous quite frankly, We've got you know,
7:35
Speaker 6: the Judicial Anact. We're getting ready put that back out
7:37
Speaker 6: to bid. The fifth floor is going to be bid
7:39
Speaker 6: separately from the downstairs part of the Judicial and Acts.
7:42
Speaker 6: That's a major construction project. It's going to go out
7:46
Speaker 6: to bid pretty soon, at least the fifth floor, and
7:49
Speaker 6: then we're going to do the first floor after we
7:51
Speaker 6: do a little redesign. So that's going out. Obviously, the
7:55
Speaker 6: Capital Sports Center we're working on that. We should be
7:58
Speaker 6: able to announce the revised plan pretty soon. We're already
8:00
Speaker 6: discussing dates on when we're going to do that, probably
8:02
Speaker 6: going to be sometime in February. So that's a that's
8:05
Speaker 6: a that's a gigantic project. I mean, that's something that
8:09
Speaker 6: it's and.
8:09
Speaker 3: It's a project that's kind of changed over the course
8:13
Speaker 3: of time.
8:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, it it definitely has.
8:14
Speaker 6: When we announced it, you know, I thought we would
8:16
Speaker 6: be able to get a lot more the property than
8:19
Speaker 6: we were able to get. Construction costs we're a lot
8:22
Speaker 6: lower at the time and we announced it. Now it's
8:24
Speaker 6: up about forty percent thirty to forty percent depending on
8:28
Speaker 6: your area. But uh, you know, the square footage for
8:31
Speaker 6: construction is way up, and so we want to do it,
8:35
Speaker 6: we want to do it right, but we also have
8:36
Speaker 6: to keep our budget in mind and so that so
8:40
Speaker 6: we just got to scale it back.
8:41
Speaker 4: You know.
8:41
Speaker 6: Eventually, if we can add on the additional parts, then
8:43
Speaker 6: we will, but otherwise we're going to press forward with
8:46
Speaker 6: the part that's going to bring people into town, you know,
8:49
Speaker 6: the volleyball, the basketball, that's going to pack hotels, just
8:53
Speaker 6: like the Shawnee Sports Complex has. We know which sports
8:56
Speaker 6: travel you know, we've done, We've had studies done. We
9:00
Speaker 6: pay attention to national studies and national statistics. We know
9:04
Speaker 6: which sports will bring people into town to you know,
9:07
Speaker 6: pack our hotels and pack our restaurants and have people shopping.
9:11
Speaker 6: So that's that's kind of what we're focused on.
9:13
Speaker 3: It just seems like that, oh, the last week, with
9:15
Speaker 3: the weather and everything, everything's just kind of come to
9:16
Speaker 3: a grinding halt. You know, there's been a whole lot
9:19
Speaker 3: going on.
9:20
Speaker 6: I think I was one of the only people on
9:21
Speaker 6: Capitol Street on Monday. It was it was nasty out,
9:25
Speaker 6: but yeah, you know, and our folks over to the
9:28
Speaker 6: county have done a great job, and so of the cities,
9:31
Speaker 6: you know, the City of Charleston, City of South Charleston
9:33
Speaker 6: and all the cities have done a great job trying
9:34
Speaker 6: to keep the streets clean and the sidewalks clear and
9:37
Speaker 6: you know, keep everyone safe. And we even recognize a
9:42
Speaker 6: couple of the county employees on Thursday for going above
9:45
Speaker 6: and beyond the call of duty. Metro Namal one has
9:48
Speaker 6: done a great job. I mean, the volume of calls
9:51
Speaker 6: that they get during a storm like this. Uh and
9:55
Speaker 6: uh so you know the Sheriff's department of course, but
9:58
Speaker 6: uh yeah, last week was very challenging. I'm looking forward
10:01
Speaker 6: to warmer weather well, and you're not going to have
10:03
Speaker 6: it for very long.
10:04
Speaker 3: I mean, we respecting temperatures like in the mid to
10:06
Speaker 3: upper thirties, much like yesterday, but then we got colder
10:08
Speaker 3: weather coming in. The good news is though, is as
10:10
Speaker 3: of right now, it doesn't look like a lot of
10:12
Speaker 3: whole lot of snow and ice. That's what we had,
10:14
Speaker 3: just some limited, limited stuff there. Let's talk about some
10:20
Speaker 3: of the problems, or at least the issues facing the
10:24
Speaker 3: Canon County Commission in Cana County going into the twenty.
10:26
Speaker 6: Twenty five PIA and the jail bill.
10:30
Speaker 4: Those are the two biggest things. You know.
10:31
Speaker 6: PIA, we're expecting probably an eight hundre thousand dollars increase
10:36
Speaker 6: this year. We've got to figure out how to pay
10:37
Speaker 6: for that. Jail bill has been trending upward. We had
10:43
Speaker 6: some legislation put through a couple of years ago that
10:47
Speaker 6: saved us some money, but unfortunately that's kind of creeping
10:49
Speaker 6: up again. And so those are the two biggest costs
10:53
Speaker 6: for the county that we have to really pay attention to.
10:55
Speaker 6: We've got to make sure that we're doing all we
10:58
Speaker 6: can to keep pi uh it's not affordable, but as
11:03
Speaker 6: affordable as possible, so that we don't have to pass
11:06
Speaker 6: that on to our employees, so that we don't have
11:07
Speaker 6: to pass that on to uh, you know, additional costs
11:10
Speaker 6: on the taxpayers. So that's kind of the biggest thing.
11:12
Speaker 6: Making sure that our budget's under control is honestly, that's
11:15
Speaker 6: the number one priority.
11:17
Speaker 3: Do you foresee any any possible cuts come into the budget?
11:20
Speaker 6: You know what, That's what I'm gonna chat about today.
11:22
Speaker 6: I think there are some things, some discretionary spending that
11:25
Speaker 6: we had done in the past that we may not
11:27
Speaker 6: be able to do as much now this year, maybe
11:30
Speaker 6: next year. So we're gonna we're gonna watch that. And
11:32
Speaker 6: we've got to watch our revenue, see, you know, make
11:35
Speaker 6: sure that revenues are coming in.
11:37
Speaker 7: Uh.
11:37
Speaker 4: But controlling costs.
11:38
Speaker 3: You know, there's it's not rocket science.
11:40
Speaker 7: You know.
11:40
Speaker 6: You either increase your revenue or you have to decrease
11:43
Speaker 6: your costs. That's how you balance a budget. Uh, so
11:45
Speaker 6: one of the other.
11:46
Speaker 7: Uh.
11:47
Speaker 6: But the revenues as long as they are you know,
11:49
Speaker 6: people are paying the taxes. We're getting that in h
11:52
Speaker 6: and as long as our costs stay close to where
11:55
Speaker 6: they are, we should be okay. But if we have
11:57
Speaker 6: to cut expenses, we will again.
12:00
Speaker 3: Canaan County Commission President of the new county. Is this
12:02
Speaker 3: your first time as county commission.
12:03
Speaker 6: For it is, I have been on the Commission for
12:05
Speaker 6: eight years, and this is the first time that I've
12:08
Speaker 6: been president.
12:09
Speaker 4: So we'll see maybe the last time.
12:13
Speaker 3: I'm not going to go there. I'm not going to
12:15
Speaker 3: go there. Well, I mean, you know, here's the thing
12:16
Speaker 3: about it is, you've got a good group of people
12:18
Speaker 3: there with the County Commission, with Commissioner Wheeler, who you
12:20
Speaker 3: the outgoing president. He's still on the commission, but he's
12:23
Speaker 3: not going president. In my opinion, I think he does
12:26
Speaker 3: a great job. I think Natalie Tennant's going to do
12:28
Speaker 3: a great job as County Commissioner as well. So we
12:30
Speaker 3: got you got a good group there.
12:31
Speaker 6: I probably will be blowing up Commission Wheeler's phone from
12:35
Speaker 6: time to time just to get his thoughts, and uh,
12:39
Speaker 6: you know, the real thing is we've got great staff.
12:42
Speaker 6: I mean, you know, losing Jennifer Harold when she moved
12:45
Speaker 6: to South Carolina was a significant blow to the county.
12:49
Speaker 6: But Jeremy Young has stepped up and he's doing a
12:51
Speaker 6: wonderful job. I had him on the show a couple
12:53
Speaker 6: of weeks ago. Ye yeah, I mean he is in
12:55
Speaker 6: the you know, he was the county manager for Putnam
12:57
Speaker 6: County and did a great job there. So we were
12:59
Speaker 6: so glad to have him on board. And you know
13:02
Speaker 6: the rest of our staff, they just do a remarkable job,
13:04
Speaker 6: and they're hard working and they're not nine to five ers.
13:07
Speaker 6: You know, it's you know, when you're when you're working
13:10
Speaker 6: for the county, it is a honestly, it's more than
13:13
Speaker 6: a full time job. And uh, you know, I think
13:16
Speaker 6: Jeremy is he knew that from Putnam County, certainly understanding
13:19
Speaker 6: it now.
13:19
Speaker 3: And it's I will let you go on this. It's
13:21
Speaker 3: a big day here in Charleston for the Sate of
13:23
Speaker 3: West Virginia inauguration day going on. We got all these
13:26
Speaker 3: different people in different positions, you know in the capital. Uh,
13:30
Speaker 3: the ag commissioner was the only one that's keeping the
13:32
Speaker 3: current job. You got a new Secretary of State, you
13:34
Speaker 3: got new of course, new governor, you got you got
13:36
Speaker 3: one one new congressman in the state. You got a
13:39
Speaker 3: new senator in Jim Justice, so, uh, a lot of
13:41
Speaker 3: changes in the capital, a lot of changes everywhere.
13:43
Speaker 4: There have been a lot of changes.
13:45
Speaker 7: You know.
13:45
Speaker 4: I'm excited for uh Governor Patrick Morrisey.
13:48
Speaker 6: I know he was sworn in last night at midnight officially,
13:50
Speaker 6: and I think he's going to do a wonderful job.
13:53
Speaker 7: He is.
13:53
Speaker 4: Uh.
13:54
Speaker 6: You know, I've witnessed how hard of a worker he is.
13:58
Speaker 6: You know, there was one time Terry and I went
13:59
Speaker 6: out to a restaurant and he was over there. He
14:02
Speaker 6: had just a stack of papers. He was sitting there
14:04
Speaker 6: eating by himself, making phone calls.
14:06
Speaker 4: You know.
14:07
Speaker 6: So I've seen his I've seen his work ethic. I've
14:10
Speaker 6: talked to him numerous times, and I think he's going
14:13
Speaker 6: to do a wonderful job.
14:13
Speaker 3: And his County Commission, you know, the entire body. You know,
14:16
Speaker 3: you you lean heavily on the Capitol for different things.
14:19
Speaker 4: We do.
14:19
Speaker 6: We we certainly do and uh, you know that's that's
14:22
Speaker 6: another thing. Commission Commission Wheeler has done a great job
14:24
Speaker 6: at is working with our legislative delegation and trying to
14:29

Speaker 3: It's Rick Johnson, and he joins us now our Jay,
18:02
Speaker 3: Good morning, welcome to the show.
18:04
Speaker 7: Good morning, Dave. How are you.
18:06
Speaker 3: I am doing fine. I know it's a busy day
18:09
Speaker 3: for you folks over there, just like it is for
18:10
Speaker 3: us here as you're getting ready for the inauguration, So
18:13
Speaker 3: I won't keep you too long. I do want to
18:15
Speaker 3: talk about Mark Curtis, though. I mean, what a pro
18:18
Speaker 3: genuinely good guy who's gonna be missed. And he picked
18:21
Speaker 3: a heck of a great time to move to Florida.
18:24
Speaker 3: I'll say that for him.
18:27
Speaker 7: Yeah, we can always question his timing. Uh, but yeah,
18:30
Speaker 7: I mean he uh you know what he had. He's
18:33
Speaker 7: earned that and we're over and happy for him. He's
18:36
Speaker 7: done in the sunshine, And you know, I just don't
18:39
Speaker 7: want to he wants to do. I talked to him
18:41
Speaker 7: several times and test it back and forth, and uh,
18:45
Speaker 7: you know, I look at it this way. I could never, never,
18:48
Speaker 7: ever fill Mark's shoes in this position, but I can
18:52
Speaker 7: stand on his shoulders and there you go. That's sort
18:55
Speaker 7: of that's sort of the way I look at it.
18:57
Speaker 7: And uh, you know, so we had our first show
19:00
Speaker 7: over this past weekend, working another one coming up this weekend.
19:04
Speaker 7: So it never stops. Really.
19:07
Speaker 3: So how long have you been at thirteen?
19:10
Speaker 7: Almost twelve years? You'll be twelve years. What month is this, January? Yeah,
19:15
Speaker 7: first week of February, you know, it'll be twelve. It's
19:19
Speaker 7: hard to believe. Yeah, twelve years.
19:21
Speaker 3: And of course the show inside Westervirginia Politics Air is
19:24
Speaker 3: not only here but all over the state on the
19:26
Speaker 3: next to our family stations in the DC market too. RJ.
19:29
Speaker 7: Yes, it does have a responsibility there, but I try
19:33
Speaker 7: to look at it, you know. You know this day,
19:35
Speaker 7: we always in radio try to think of the whole
19:38
Speaker 7: thing is we're talking to one person at a time,
19:41
Speaker 7: and that's the way I kind of feel on this
19:45
Speaker 7: particular platform. It's one if you are at a time,
19:48
Speaker 7: and I try not to let my mind get wrapped
19:50
Speaker 7: up in all the other things. We love our next
19:52
Speaker 7: our stations in the state, and of course we're in
19:54
Speaker 7: DC and we're going to do our best to serve
19:56

20:11
Speaker 3: about your career in broadcasting. Of course, you remember the
20:14
Speaker 3: West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame. It's in your blood, man,
20:17
Speaker 3: just like it's in mind. Talk about your career as
20:21
Speaker 3: a whole. How did you get to be Rick Johnson?
20:25
Speaker 7: Well, I grew up here. I wasn't born here, but
20:28
Speaker 7: I grew up in there in Kanawa County, went to
20:32
Speaker 7: schools in Saint Alban's Parkway Elementary St. Alveust junior in
20:36
Speaker 7: high school, took a couple of years at West Virginia State.
20:40
Speaker 7: But I really at that point was already getting into radio,
20:43
Speaker 7: and radio just consumed me full time. And so that's
20:47
Speaker 7: that's where, you know, things got really on track for me.
20:51
Speaker 7: And I did forty plus years on radio all and
20:54
Speaker 7: right here in this market, everyone anywhere else, right here
20:58
Speaker 7: in the Charleston market, and I just loved it. I mean,
21:01
Speaker 7: when I was a kid, I listened to radio. I
21:03
Speaker 7: think because not only the music, but also I loved
21:06
Speaker 7: listening to the DJs. I loved listening to the jingles.
21:09
Speaker 11: Uh.
21:10
Speaker 7: It was just kind of I guess that was weird.
21:12
Speaker 3: You know, No, same same here, buddies say, I mean,
21:14
Speaker 3: and and people that are like we are don't even
21:17
Speaker 3: as a kid.
21:18
Speaker 4: Uh.
21:18
Speaker 3: And I've told this story on the air before, back
21:20
Speaker 3: in the eighties. Uh, you know, boomboxes worth thing, and
21:23
Speaker 3: all my friends would record music from the radio and
21:26
Speaker 3: would get upset when the disc jockey would talk. I
21:30
Speaker 3: was recording the disc jockeys. I couldn't care less about
21:33
Speaker 3: the music. I wanted to hear the and now I
21:35
Speaker 3: was recording them doing the weather and traffic. That's how
21:38
Speaker 3: weird I was. So don't come at me with that
21:40
Speaker 3: weird stuff, Johnson. I'm right there with you, buddy, Okay.
21:43
Speaker 7: I feel I feel much better now. That's how it's
21:47
Speaker 7: some of things like you. In a way, it's in
21:49
Speaker 7: our DNA and so it's just and opportunities happened for me,
21:55
Speaker 7: doors open for me. I didn't. I didn't knock on
21:58
Speaker 7: the door. Doors open for me, Like yeah, well, this
22:00
Speaker 7: is another sign it's meant to be for me, and
22:03
Speaker 7: so I just I wrote that wagon as long as
22:05
Speaker 7: I could, and I loved every minute of it. I
22:08
Speaker 7: love working down at eleven eleven Virginia Street East. Started
22:11
Speaker 7: out at two stations at that twelve V one hundred
22:15
Speaker 7: and our AM station in conn offs Age six eighty,
22:17
Speaker 7: so we had two stations there. West Virginia Radio Corporation
22:21
Speaker 7: bought us in the early nineties. We moved over to
22:23
Speaker 7: Virginia Street with them and had a great career there
22:27
Speaker 7: as well. So yeah, now, again very hard to believe,
22:31
Speaker 7: twelve years in television news, but I work with a
22:34
Speaker 7: really great group of people there at thirteen News. Great ownership,
22:39
Speaker 7: great management. I'm not just saying that, I really really
22:42
Speaker 7: do appreciate the opportunity to work where I am.
22:45
Speaker 3: And of course you spent many.
22:46
Speaker 7: Years there at thirteen News. Great ownership, great management. I'm
22:50
Speaker 7: not just saying that, I really really do appreciate the
22:53
Speaker 7: opportunity to work where I am.
22:55
Speaker 3: And of course you spent many years behind the microphone,
22:58
Speaker 3: and even since you've been over there, you've been kind
22:59
Speaker 3: of behind the scenes. Now you're going to go on camera.
23:03
Speaker 3: That's a little bit different for US radio people. And
23:06
Speaker 3: it's something that I'm going to be fighted out here
23:08
Speaker 3: real soon because next month or so, once they get
23:10
Speaker 3: our new studio built and we move back into the
23:13
Speaker 3: studio that you occupied for many years, the WCHS studio,
23:17
Speaker 3: I'm actually going to be on camera as well. So
23:19
Speaker 3: I got to get used to that's a little bit
23:21
Speaker 3: weird having those cameras on you.
23:22
Speaker 4: Man.
23:24
Speaker 7: You know, it is something that it's all difficult to
23:28
Speaker 7: working on that. But again, I try to imagine, I'm
23:31
Speaker 7: just talking to one person at a time right now.
23:33
Speaker 7: Don't worry about anything else. Just worry about that one
23:35
Speaker 7: person who's watching, and it helps me calm down a
23:39
Speaker 7: little bit. But it's a process, a learning process. And
23:43
Speaker 7: I was thinking, I'm actually talking to you from my
23:46
Speaker 7: car over here at the Capital Grounds in the Capitol
23:49
Speaker 7: Parking Building getting ready for the inauguration of Patrick Morrissey
23:54
Speaker 7: here as governor. And I remember I was over here
23:58
Speaker 7: in nineteen seventy seven January nineteen seventy seven when Jay
24:02
Speaker 7: Rockefeller was inaugurated and it was the coldest and I've
24:05
Speaker 7: seen it, the coldest inauguration in the history of the
24:10
Speaker 7: state of West Virginia and it was minus ten degrees
24:13
Speaker 7: over ninth and during the day it was like around
24:16
Speaker 7: six degrees above zero, So it was about six degrees
24:21
Speaker 7: above zero when we were sitting over here behind the
24:25
Speaker 7: Capitol Building for Jay Rockefeller's inauguration. So full circle, man,
24:29
Speaker 7: circle of life.
24:30
Speaker 3: Oddly enough, I was talking to your good friend of mine,
24:32
Speaker 3: Speedy Bevans, about that earlier this morning. We were talking
24:34
Speaker 3: about in and I talk every morning, and he was
24:37
Speaker 3: talking about that nineteen seventy seven inauguration of Jay Rockefeller,
24:41
Speaker 3: and that winner itself was brutal on on its own, right, Rick,
24:46
Speaker 3: before we let you go. Now, the big question is locally,
24:48
Speaker 3: and I got texts about it, and I know it's
24:51
Speaker 3: something that's out of your control, but I gotta throw
24:53
Speaker 3: it out there. I'm an Optimum subscriber. As of now,
24:56
Speaker 3: I cannot see Inside Wes, Virginia Politics or any of
24:59
Speaker 3: the other WKTV programming. I missed your first show, missed
25:03
Speaker 3: one of my favorite shows yesterday morning, the CBS Sunday
25:06
Speaker 3: Morning Show. I missed two playoff games, all right. One
25:09
Speaker 3: of those, you know it was streamed the Saturday game
25:12
Speaker 3: the Texans, and the charges was over on Nickelodeon with
25:15
Speaker 3: the color commentary done by the folks for whatever they
25:19
Speaker 3: are from the SpongeBob SquarePants. I tried to watch that.
25:24
Speaker 3: I don't smoke enough pot for that to make any
25:26
Speaker 3: sense to me. So I know it's out of your hands,
25:30
Speaker 3: but is there any is there? Are we getting anywhere
25:33
Speaker 3: with this thing?
25:34
Speaker 4: Man?
25:34
Speaker 3: Because again I had a text says we can't see
25:36
Speaker 3: Rick Johnson on TV thirteen. Optimum has all next to
25:39
Speaker 3: our stations blocked. What can you tell us?
25:42
Speaker 7: Well, I can't tell you anything officially, of course, Dave,
25:44
Speaker 7: I have no clue as what's happening in other parts
25:47
Speaker 7: of the company. With all of this, I would suggest
25:51
Speaker 7: that people go to our website, wowktv dot com, and
25:57
Speaker 7: at the very top of our web h is a
26:00
Speaker 7: big red and white banner that will tell you exactly
26:03
Speaker 7: what you need to know as a viewer and what
26:05
Speaker 7: you can do to help in this situation. And that's
26:08
Speaker 7: what I would say. Go to wwktv dot com and
26:12
Speaker 7: it's very simple to do this. Just take a minute
26:15
Speaker 7: or so to see what's going on and how you
26:18
Speaker 7: can get involved as someone who is if you're not
26:21
Speaker 7: seeing your favorite programs right now, thirteen.
26:23
Speaker 3: All right, Rick Man, congratulations of a new gig. I'm
26:26
Speaker 3: sure you'll knock it out of the park as you
26:27
Speaker 3: have always done on everything. You're one of my heroes
26:29
Speaker 3: in the business. I do appreciate you being here and
26:33
Speaker 3: the best of luck with everything, and good luck with
26:35
Speaker 3: everything today. I know everybody's doing a double and triple
26:38
Speaker 3: time in the world of media here in Charleston to
26:39
Speaker 3: cover the inauguration today. Thanks a lot, my friend, and
26:43
Speaker 3: good luck and we'll talk soon day.
26:45
Speaker 7: Thank you very much.
26:46
Speaker 3: All right, Rick Johnson, the new host of Inside West
26:50
Speaker 3: Virginia Politics. You have that optimum thing. I mean again, you.
26:53
Speaker 4: Know, it's people.
26:55
Speaker 3: They get upset about things I got and I don't
26:58
Speaker 3: pretend to have it like Rick, pretend to have any
27:00
Speaker 3: inside information. I mean, people blame the cable companies and
27:04
Speaker 3: others are blaming the TV station and so on and
27:06
Speaker 3: so forth, and so I don't know what the I mean.
27:10
Speaker 3: Hopefully they'll get it worked out. These things pop up.
27:13
Speaker 3: If you're a cable subscriber, you know, from time to time,
27:16
Speaker 3: and not even just cable, I mean you see it
27:17
Speaker 3: on the other services, either direct TV or Dish or whatever.
27:21
Speaker 3: People say that you know they're so and so this
27:24
Speaker 3: station's going to go away, and if they can't get
27:26
Speaker 3: it worked out, well it's real deal this time. And
27:30
Speaker 3: they lost a couple of NFL playoff games as I
27:33
Speaker 3: mentioned the other shows that are on. So I am
27:35

28:37
Speaker 3: like I said, I wasn't. It wasn't to hyperboly am
28:41
Speaker 3: my part when I said Rick was one of my heroes,
28:43
Speaker 3: because he really was. There's certain people that when you
28:46
Speaker 3: are a youngster in this business that you that you
28:49
Speaker 3: look up to and know, Rick, if you're still listening,
28:51
Speaker 3: that was not a joke about your age. I'm just
28:53
Speaker 3: saying it is what it is. I've had people that
28:56
Speaker 3: have come up to me and said, I've been listening
28:59
Speaker 3: to you for well, okay, it's it's a compliment to
29:02
Speaker 3: say you've been listening to me for a long time,
29:03
Speaker 3: but you don't always take it that way, but I do.
29:06
Speaker 3: I definitely look up to Rick Johnson. I mean the
29:08
Speaker 3: stuff that he did with this company and again to
29:13
Speaker 3: have that career and have it all here in Charleston.
29:20
Speaker 3: It's something I mean, it really really is, and he
29:23
Speaker 3: was able to transition to learn a basically it's media, yeah,
29:27
Speaker 3: but there's a lot of differences between radio, television, newspaper,
29:31
Speaker 3: the different forms of media, and for him to transition
29:33
Speaker 3: into something totally different. I didn't realize until we talked
29:37
Speaker 3: that he had been there that long for twelve years
29:40
Speaker 3: over WWK TV thirteen and he's just he's killed it, man.
29:45
Speaker 3: And and I'm very happy for him because inside Westervirginia,
29:49
Speaker 3: politics is a is a very pivotal show in the
29:53
Speaker 3: news market here, not only in the Charleston market of course,
29:56
Speaker 3: as he said, it airs across the state of airs
29:58
Speaker 3: on the in the d market. And I'm very happy
30:03
Speaker 3: for RJ. Tex says, love to be able to watch WWK,
30:08
Speaker 3: but in eleven years here, I can't don't receive the
30:11

30:22
Speaker 3: speaking of inauguration day, why is Pat Morrissey blabbing about

37:34
Speaker 3: of course, is the inauguration of a new governor, Patrick Morrissey.
37:38
Speaker 3: Former STATEGP chair Conrad Lucas serving as a contact person,
37:42
Speaker 3: I guess for the incoming Morrissey administration, and he's quoted
37:46
Speaker 3: Andy at the website of several quotes in there. Morrissey,
37:50
Speaker 3: of course, av three term West Virginia Attorney general. It
37:53
Speaker 3: is going to be a busy day for the governor elect,
37:56
Speaker 3: and it's already underway now. He was sworn in at
37:59
Speaker 3: midnight last night, so everything today is pretty much ceremonial.
38:05
Speaker 3: As we speak, there is a celebration going on. This
38:10
Speaker 3: is a faith based breakfast going on at the Culture Center.
38:12
Speaker 3: The swearing in. The ceremonial swearing in is at eleven
38:16
Speaker 3: o'clock this morning. Governor Morrissey will then give his speech,
38:19
Speaker 3: followed by several receptions to be held around the capitol.
38:21
Speaker 3: At around one thirty, There's going to be a parade
38:25
Speaker 3: in Charleston around the east end of the Capitol complex.
38:28
Speaker 3: Twenty two bands will take part in this parade, local
38:32
Speaker 3: high schools, whatnot bands of both WVU and Marshall. If
38:37
Speaker 3: I'm correct about this, I think it's the first time
38:39
Speaker 3: since two thousand and nine that would been when Joe
38:43
Speaker 3: Manchin was inaugurated as government, first time that we have
38:46
Speaker 3: had a parade like this with an incoming governor. So
38:49
Speaker 3: again that's going to happen today at one thirty. More
38:53
Speaker 3: stuff going on at the Culture Center after the parade,
38:55
Speaker 3: and then what's being called a Celebration of West Virginia
38:58
Speaker 3: concert will be held at the iotle Seem Convention Center
39:01
Speaker 3: featuring the Marshall Tucker Band and Shenandoah. And then at
39:04
Speaker 3: seven o'clock tonight there's a cocktail reception at the Coliseum
39:07
Speaker 3: that by invitation only. Then the inaugural ball will start
39:10
Speaker 3: tonight at the Cottleseum at nine o'clock. It's one hundred
39:12
Speaker 3: dollars a pop to get in to that. And if
39:18
Speaker 3: you didn't catch the whole schedule, you can read it
39:21
Speaker 3: for yourself. We have a wv metro news dot com well,
39:23
Speaker 3: of course, have coverage starting as part of talk Line
39:25
Speaker 3: with TJ. Meadows and Dave Wilson. That having been said,
39:29
Speaker 3: Governor elect Morrissey is already there's already some I don't
39:33
Speaker 3: say problems. That's not the probably the not correct terminology,
39:39
Speaker 3: but there are some issues that are going to have
39:42
Speaker 3: to be worked out. One of those is because you'll
39:46
Speaker 3: recall State Senator Mark Khunt was elected as the new
39:49
Speaker 3: state Auditor. That's no faul of Patrick Morrison's, by the way,
39:52
Speaker 3: he was elected as new state Auditor, so his seat
39:55
Speaker 3: in the state Senate is going to open up, as
39:57
Speaker 3: well as the seat held by Eric Nelson, both of
40:00
Speaker 3: those guys out of Kanaha County. Senator Nelson has been
40:03
Speaker 3: named as the new Revenue Secretary. So now the Kanawh
40:07
Speaker 3: County Republican Executive Committee will send some names to the
40:11
Speaker 3: governor Governor Morrisey to choose from, and once that's once,
40:14
Speaker 3: of course, we get through all of today's activities. Morgan
40:17
Speaker 3: Pemberton has a story posted about at wv metronews dot com.
40:21
Speaker 3: She actually did an interview with Kanawah County Republican and
40:24
Speaker 3: Executive Committee chair Diana Graves, and she says, there's already
40:28
Speaker 3: all sorts of interest in the seats, as you may imagine,
40:33
Speaker 3: and here's where it kind of gets complicated, all right.
40:36
Speaker 3: The two districts with the openings are the eighth and
40:39
Speaker 3: the seventeenth. Now seventeenth takes in more than one county,
40:43
Speaker 3: further adding to the fund here, so there'll be other
40:47
Speaker 3: folks involved in this besides just Kanawha County, all right,
40:51
Speaker 3: And as we've seen in the past. Executive Committee will
40:54
Speaker 3: again send those names to the governor and he will choose.
40:57
Speaker 3: And I am hearing, I am hearing there some very interesting,
41:01
Speaker 3: well known names being thrown out there, very very interesting
41:05
Speaker 3: to day. I won't get into rumor and gossip on
41:09
Speaker 3: the show, but I'm hearing some pretty pretty well known
41:13
Speaker 3: names are being flown being floated about to replace Mark
41:18

Speaker 3: we normally do. Correct, but we are going to be
45:05
Speaker 3: breaking in. I understand you. I'll let you explain it
45:08
Speaker 3: because I think Jeff Jenkins and Brad mclheney are going
45:11
Speaker 3: to be part of that from the capitol and then
45:13
Speaker 3: we just kind of transition to those guys.
45:15
Speaker 15: Is that what's going on? Yeah, that's what's going on.
45:16
Speaker 15: So We'll start at ten six. We'll check in with

Speaker 15: Brad and Jeff. They are getting set up at the
45:19
Speaker 15: Capitol as we speak. Excuse me a bit of a
45:22
Speaker 15: horse and throg of my throat rather, and then we're
45:25
Speaker 15: going to transition to various guests who will talk a
45:29
Speaker 15: little bit about Jim Justice and his administration, but also
45:32
Speaker 15: look forward to Patrick Morrissey's administration. One I'm particularly eager
45:36
Speaker 15: to talk to. We'll talk with Mike McKenna. He is
45:38
Speaker 15: a DC Republican operative columnist for the Washington Times. He
45:43
Speaker 15: knew Patrick Morrissey back before Patrick Morrissey was in politics,
45:46
Speaker 15: when he was a staffer on the hill and a lobbyist.
45:49
Speaker 15: And we'll talk with Mike about the early Morrissey days
45:52
Speaker 15: and get some history there that's always fascinating. And then
45:54
Speaker 15: coming up at eleven oh six, the inauguration starts at eleven.
45:57
Speaker 15: Of course, you'll have multiple people trickling down the stage
46:00
Speaker 15: to be inaugurated. Six Board of Public Works members to
46:03
Speaker 15: be inaugurated today, plus justices from the Intermediate Court of
46:07
Speaker 15: Appeals as well as the State Supreme Court. So Jeff
46:11
Speaker 15: and Brad will anchor that from there with Dave and
46:13
Speaker 15: I also chiming in. We'll talk to people in the crowd,
46:15
Speaker 15: various officials that may come up, so comprehensive coverage starting
46:20
Speaker 15: at eleven oh six inside talk line and then running
46:23
Speaker 15: until the end. So Metro News will continue coverage at noon,
46:27
Speaker 15: when you normally go off the year. There we'll have
46:29
Speaker 15: coverage for our affiliates. I'm sure we'll be live here
46:31
Speaker 15: on five eight WCCHS as well, and Jeff and Brad
46:34
Speaker 15: will cover all things inauguration at the Capitol from A
46:36
Speaker 15: to Z. You know, I think it's it's going to
46:39
Speaker 15: be very interesting to see how everything plays out with
46:43
Speaker 15: the Governor Morrissey because a couple of things here, TJ
46:46
Speaker 15: and you can agree or disagree, but it's my show,
46:48
Speaker 15: so I'll cut your microphone. So you know, Morrissey, I
46:52
Speaker 15: think no one is going to to disagree that Morrisey's
46:55
Speaker 15: going to be a whole lot more engaged than what
46:57
Speaker 15: Governor Justice was. I mean, because Morrissey is a from
47:01
Speaker 15: what I know of Patrick, he is a very hands
47:04
Speaker 15: on kind of guy. You're not going to see that disconnect.
47:07
Speaker 15: I don't think that you had.
47:09
Speaker 3: And look, I'm not saying this to be critical of
47:11
Speaker 3: Governor Justice. I'm just saying it is what it is.
47:13
Speaker 3: You know, he had a great staff around him. I
47:15
Speaker 3: think the world of Brian Abraham. Brian and I grew
47:18
Speaker 3: up together. Great great guy, did a fantastic job there.
47:22
Speaker 3: But physically speaking, you know, Jim Justice, wasn't there a lot,
47:27
Speaker 3: you know. And I think you're going to see the
47:28
Speaker 3: opposite with Patrick morris He. I think Patrick Morrissey is
47:31
Speaker 3: going to be He's actually going to, what I understand,
47:33
Speaker 3: live in the governor's mansion, as a constitution requires, So
47:36
Speaker 3: he's actually going to be there. It's gonna be a
47:39
Speaker 3: little bit more hands on. Morrissey is known and I
47:44
Speaker 3: don't mean this. There's no way I can say this
47:46
Speaker 3: without making it sound bad. He's known as being very headstrong,
47:49
Speaker 3: very stubborn, which is not necessarily bad things in the
47:51
Speaker 3: world of politics. I mean, not necessarily bad things. So
47:55
Speaker 3: there could be some issues with him maybe getting along
47:58
Speaker 3: with other maybe not. I mean, look, I want what's
48:00
Speaker 3: best for West Virginia, you know, bottom line, and I
48:03
Speaker 3: don't want strife and fighting. I want people to kind
48:06
Speaker 3: of kind of get along. I will say this that
48:10
Speaker 3: I am hearing now, and I said I don't engage
48:13
Speaker 3: in gossip, but I'm going to do this time because
48:16
Speaker 3: I've checked it out and I've got pretty reliable sources
48:20
Speaker 3: unless your ships. For now, I'm hearing that Crescent Gallagher,
48:27
Speaker 3: and that's a name that people have heard in the
48:30
Speaker 3: past with Americans for Prosperity, was tapped and was announced
48:33
Speaker 3: as being uh the incoming press secretary with Governor Morrissey.
48:38
Speaker 3: I am being told by several people, and I have
48:40
Speaker 3: reached out to Crescent myself. I have not talked to
48:43
Speaker 3: him UH that he has decided to stay put with
48:45
Speaker 3: Americans for Prosperity. And again I'll try to talk to
48:49
Speaker 3: him about that, but I but I am hearing that
48:53
Speaker 3: that he is not going to take the job, that
48:54
Speaker 3: he's going to stay uh with Americas for Prosperity. And
48:59
Speaker 3: I don't know that I would read too much into that.
49:01
Speaker 3: I mean, people have taken jobs and then went back
49:04
Speaker 3: and talked to their family or just reconsidered it on
49:06
Speaker 3: their own said yeah, this isn't for me. I think
49:07
Speaker 3: I'm going to change my mind. It happens the time,
49:08
Speaker 3: it happens all the time, but there's just more of
49:10
Speaker 3: a magnifying glass on a TJ when you're into public eye. Sure,
49:13
Speaker 3: and I'm sure that will become more clear as we
49:17
Speaker 3: move on. I've heard the same thing.
49:18
Speaker 15: I haven't talked to to Crescent, but you know, things
49:21
Speaker 15: happen to your points, It's not unusual that some of
49:24
Speaker 15: these changes will happen. I will say this, here's what
49:27
Speaker 15: I'm looking for today. When I talk to people in
49:31
Speaker 15: the Justice Administration, I'm hearing that there may be a
49:35
Speaker 15: difference of opinion in how the state has been left
49:38
Speaker 15: fiscally and financially. If you talk to the Justice Administration,
49:42
Speaker 15: you will hear that all is well, everything's good in
49:44
Speaker 15: the hood, as the governor typically says, and they believe
49:48
Speaker 15: that from a fiscal perspective too. When you listen to
49:51
Speaker 15: Governor elect now Governor Morrissey after being sworn in last night,
49:55
Speaker 15: you'll hear a little bit of a different tune in
49:57
Speaker 15: terms of Okay, how do we pay for where the
50:00
Speaker 15: tax cuts? And so there seems to be a distinction
50:03
Speaker 15: there between the two camps. So today, as the governor speaks,
50:07
Speaker 15: I'm going to be listening for him to talk about
50:09
Speaker 15: because he campaigned on this. He campaigned on tax cuts
50:13
Speaker 15: and moving more toward dissolving the income tax. So I'm
50:16
Speaker 15: going to be listening this morning to see what he
50:19
Speaker 15: says on that. I'm going to be listening for cues
50:21
Speaker 15: in terms of what he thinks he's inheriting and what
50:24
Speaker 15: he plans to do. West Virginia has a lot of problems.
50:27
Speaker 15: We have a foster care crisis in the state. We
50:29
Speaker 15: have a problem with childcare availability, keeping people from working
50:32
Speaker 15: in the state. So I want to be listening for
50:34
Speaker 15: all of those key type issues. Will he say anything
50:36
Speaker 15: about peia, How will labor and the teachers respond to
50:40
Speaker 15: what he says if he says anything at all. There's
50:42
Speaker 15: a lot to hear this morning on the podium, and
50:44
Speaker 15: I'm hoping he addresses some of these things. May not,
50:46
Speaker 15: may be a speech where things are more general, and
50:49
Speaker 15: then you start to hear policy initiatives come later as
50:52
Speaker 15: we get closer to session.
50:53
Speaker 3: But again, I remain curious as to what this governor
50:56
Speaker 3: will do.
50:56
Speaker 4: And how he will do it.
50:57
Speaker 3: And it's interesting the way that it's playing out, because
51:00
Speaker 3: you know, with this being the year when the new
51:03
Speaker 3: governor comes in, basically all of this hoopla and all
51:06
Speaker 3: of this stuff going on today and then nothing happens.
51:08
Speaker 3: You know, I don't say nothing happens. I don't mean that,
51:10
Speaker 3: but I mean, you know, the session doesn't start till
51:12
Speaker 3: what February twelfth, is that right? So he's got about
51:14
Speaker 3: a month or so to get in, to get to
51:17
Speaker 3: kind of get settled in and that sort of thing.
51:20
Speaker 3: And some of his staff members don't work out or
51:23
Speaker 3: you know, they decide in the situation I mentioned earlier
51:27
Speaker 3: that he didn't. They don't want to be involved in it.
51:31
Speaker 3: He can go a different direction. Let me not got
51:33
Speaker 3: a texture totally in related to politics. I was talking
51:35
Speaker 3: about this sock drop that we'll be doing. You'll be
51:38
Speaker 3: out there with us, by the way, on the twenty third,
51:40
Speaker 3: just so you know I will, Yes, you'll be out there. Well,
51:42
Speaker 3: I'll be collecting socks to be given to the through
51:45
Speaker 3: Union mission on the twenty third. Appreciate a text or

51:51

51:57
Speaker 3: anyone's interested, says the TEXTRA eight is the outlet has

Speaker 3: heated socks for five dollars. These run eight forty nine
52:04
Speaker 3: online from Walmart. If anyone could get one or two packs,
52:07
Speaker 3: day would be perfect for the sock drop. And that's
52:09
Speaker 3: eight is the outlet in Saint albans I appreciate the
52:11
Speaker 3: text of letting us know that. I just want to
52:13
Speaker 3: quickly say I've had a long relationship with Union Mission.
52:15
Speaker 3: My grandmother introduced me to them when I was very young,
52:18
Speaker 3: six or seven years old. Fabulous organization that does so
52:21
Speaker 3: much in the community, and they are so deserving of
52:23
Speaker 3: all the help that we can give them. So yeah,
52:24
Speaker 3: I'll be there on the twenty three. All right, appreciate it.
52:27
Speaker 7: TJ.

Speaker 3: Jeff Chenkins will be handling that. Coming up on tomorrow's show,
