Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It's very important, just like it's important for us to
- 0:02Speaker 1: understand Abraham in order to understand Isaac, it's important for
- 0:06Speaker 1: us to understand Isaac in order to understand Jacob and
- 0:10Speaker 1: vice versa.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Because much of who Jacob is.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Is really caught up in the identity of his father
- 0:18Speaker 1: and the identity of his grandfather. Also, we don't have
- 0:24Speaker 1: much information about Isaac, unfortunately.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Unfortunately.
- 0:28Speaker 1: We know very few things about Isaac, and most of
- 0:32Speaker 1: them are not very positive.
- 0:36Speaker 2: You ever thought about that?
- 0:37Speaker 1: You look at the information that we have about Abraham,
- 0:40Speaker 1: tons of information about Abraham. A whole lot of Genesis
- 0:44Speaker 1: is devoted to the life of Abraham. When it comes
- 0:47Speaker 1: to the life of Isaac, there's just this small sliver
- 0:51Speaker 1: as though he's a kind of speed bump to get
- 0:53Speaker 1: us from Abraham to Jacob, if you will. And most
- 0:57Speaker 1: of what we see in Isaac's life is an unfortunate
- 1:02Speaker 1: repetition of many of the failures of the life of
- 1:06Speaker 1: Abraham in the process.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So there's a little foreshadowing here of what is yet
- 1:11Speaker 2: to come.
- 1:11Speaker 1: For Isaac's son. And Isaac prayed to the Lord for
- 1:16Speaker 1: his wife because she was barren. Here's what's interesting. We
- 1:22Speaker 1: already see a parallel and a distinction between the life
- 1:25Speaker 1: of Abraham and the life of Isaac. Both of them
- 1:28Speaker 1: are dealing with barrenness in their wives in light of
- 1:31Speaker 1: a promise from God. God has made a promise to Abraham.
- 1:35Speaker 1: He's going to make Abraham a great nation, the father
- 1:38Speaker 1: of many nations, and yet.
- 1:39Speaker 2: He has no son. His wife is barren.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Right here, immediately, there's a distinction between Abraham and Isaac. Isaac,
- 1:48Speaker 1: they're not able to conceive. What is his response? To
- 1:53Speaker 1: get on his face before God. Not to try another route,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but to get on his face before Almighty God and
- 2:03Speaker 1: beg that God would bring forth a child through his wife.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Not to find another woman like his father did, but
- 2:14Speaker 1: to trust that God would provide the way God said
- 2:17Speaker 1: he would provide.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Now it's interesting.
- 2:20Speaker 1: The Bible doesn't tell us this, but it's hard not
- 2:23Speaker 1: to believe that that Isaac's experience with Ishmael, the older
- 2:28Speaker 1: brother who despised him, may have had a little bit
- 2:30Speaker 1: to do with this.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Amen?
- 2:35Speaker 1: He saw that friction between Hagar.
- 2:40Speaker 2: And his mother. He did not want to do that
- 2:42Speaker 2: to his wife.
- 2:44Speaker 1: He saw the friction between Ishmael And him, the seed
- 2:48Speaker 1: of promise, who came not from Hagar, but from Sarah,
- 2:52Speaker 1: he did not repeat this.
- 2:54Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I'm going to God. We're not going to mess this
- 2:58Speaker 1: up like that. God's got to fix this. It's got
- 3:00Speaker 1: to happen.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Thank you.
