Latest / Foul Territory / Berrios ditched Blue Jays during WS, Mets offering Pete Alonso 3 years? Dodgers win Díaz bid, Orioles & Reds big offers for Schwarber
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: All right, let's charge the mound and get back to
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Edwin Diaz fallout. We have some word on how
- 0:12Speaker 1: this went down, so we mentioned this in the Ken
- 0:15Speaker 1: Rosenthal segment. I think it's worth bringing up again. The
- 0:18Speaker 1: Mets were a few million off crafts. They said, hey,
- 0:23Speaker 1: we've got room here, come back to us. He said,
- 0:26Speaker 1: you better give us your best shot. Went to the Dodgers.
- 0:32Speaker 1: That's how free agency works. You don't sure is it
- 0:37Speaker 1: potentially respectful to allow the team that's paid you a
- 0:40Speaker 1: lot of money and had you there to get their
- 0:42Speaker 1: last best offer. But he has the right as a
- 0:45Speaker 1: free agent most major league players. Let's say you get
- 0:48Speaker 1: picked out of high school or international draft signing right like,
- 0:51Speaker 1: you don't get the free agency for essentially a decade.
- 0:54Speaker 1: If you get signed not longer, he doesn't owe you ship.
- 1:00Speaker 2: And by the way, also, I'm gonna say this like
- 1:03Speaker 2: he's been on the Mets. He knows what the Mets
- 1:05Speaker 2: are about.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:06Speaker 2: As much as this is gonna pay Mets fans to
- 1:08Speaker 2: hear it, he's just watched the Dodgers win two World
- 1:11Speaker 2: Series in a row. They needed a closer. They offered
- 1:14Speaker 2: him more money he wanted to go to la because
- 1:16Speaker 2: what have we talked about. It's a destination he chose,
- 1:20Speaker 2: he made his choice. It's nothing against the Mets, and
- 1:22Speaker 2: I'm sure he'll come out and say it's nothing against
- 1:24Speaker 2: the Mets. He got more money, he got a better deal,
- 1:27Speaker 2: and he's going to a place it's won back to
- 1:28Speaker 2: back World Series championships. Good for him, that's it. Good
- 1:32Speaker 2: for him.
- 1:32Speaker 4: I'm sorry Mets fans, but good for him.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm gonna double down on Mets fans here. If
- 1:39Speaker 3: it's only three million that he made the choice, he
- 1:43Speaker 3: probably didn't like it as much as three million is
- 1:49Speaker 3: out there, Like three million dollars is in the scope
- 1:53Speaker 3: of how much he's made already. You're talking a guy
- 1:55Speaker 3: that's made over one hundred million dollars or will have
- 1:57Speaker 3: made over one hundred million dollars in his career. He's
- 2:01Speaker 3: been there, he's enjoyed it. He had success in Seattle,
- 2:04Speaker 3: was part of a big trade over there, saw what
- 2:07Speaker 3: happens when you don't do well, and then has been
- 2:09Speaker 3: lights out since he's been there. I just maybe it's
- 2:14Speaker 3: not all peaches and cream like it's you know, like
- 2:18Speaker 3: it's shown on the outside, and ultimately aj Will. I
- 2:21Speaker 3: assume AJ will gree with me. When you're a player
- 2:24Speaker 3: and you're talking about sixty six or sixty nine million dollars,
- 2:28Speaker 3: what's the second what's the second price? You want a ring,
- 2:32Speaker 3: and you want as many rings as possible. And I
- 2:34Speaker 3: think he knows he can go and chase that with
- 2:37Speaker 3: the Dodgers, and maybe he could have chased it with
- 2:40Speaker 3: the Mets. But he knows he could have chased that
- 2:43Speaker 3: with the Dodgers.
- 2:45Speaker 1: And I guess he didn't want to play where he
- 2:47Speaker 1: goes to the Mets and says, hey, I've got another team,
- 2:49Speaker 1: or maybe even says.
- 2:51Speaker 2: How many times do you have to go back to
- 2:52Speaker 2: the Mets. He's like, I have a better offer. Make
- 2:54Speaker 2: me your best offer. You can't just keep going back
- 2:58Speaker 2: to the team and saying I want to stay here
- 3:00Speaker 2: so badly. Make me your best offer. I have a
- 3:03Speaker 2: better offer on the table. I'm not telling you what team.
- 3:06Speaker 2: You can probably guess make me your best offer. And
- 3:08Speaker 2: if they don't do it, then that's on them. They
- 3:11Speaker 2: clearly they chose Devin Williams over Edwin deal.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Kratz. The Mets won the one Soto Sweet Sakes last
- 3:22Speaker 1: year that involves much more than just you know, a
- 3:24Speaker 1: GM combo. David Stearns was running the Brewers. This was
- 3:29Speaker 1: not what he did there. They don't do that. The
- 3:31Speaker 1: Bruers won't do any of this.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Right.
- 3:32Speaker 1: What's the narrative around the Brewers this offseason? Will they
- 3:35Speaker 1: trade Freddy Perraulton?
- 3:36Speaker 3: That right?
- 3:36Speaker 1: They're looking at expiring contracts that are looming and how
- 3:42Speaker 1: they should operate with either keeping them or trading them.
- 3:44Speaker 1: They don't even have to call people like this. I
- 3:48Speaker 1: don't want to say a lack of experience, but what
- 3:52Speaker 1: do you think of his approach so far?
- 3:56Speaker 3: I mean, our narrative changed in June. Our narrative change
- 4:00Speaker 3: I think May twentieth when the starting pitching became what
- 4:04Speaker 3: we thought they were going to become. But we have
- 4:07Speaker 3: to make sure everybody knows that we're putting David Stearns
- 4:11Speaker 3: in this like Okay, his owner wants to spend or
- 4:15Speaker 3: can spend like the Dodgers. David Sterns is not like
- 4:20Speaker 3: all the other gms which are way down here, who
- 4:23Speaker 3: have owners that are just like Nope, nope, do not spend,
- 4:25Speaker 3: do not spend. David Stearns has a formula. He has
- 4:28Speaker 3: a theory based loosely on the fact that he doesn't
- 4:32Speaker 3: want to go very bad.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Stop.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I have someone that wants to say hi to you.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I don't know if you can hear them. Can you
- 4:39Speaker 2: see who this is?
- 4:46Speaker 3: Hired me and fired me?
- 4:48Speaker 5: He said, he hired you, hired him and fired him.
- 4:51Speaker 3: That's one decision was good.
- 4:53Speaker 4: The firing. Clearly, he was good for us, Neil.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Huntington, for everybody who is just listening.
- 5:00Speaker 1: But you do help.
- 5:02Speaker 3: But like this, this is what Steve Cohen has signed
- 5:08Speaker 3: up to allow his general manager to do. Clearly, Steve
- 5:12Speaker 3: Cohen went, We're gonna get Wan Soto. I want to
- 5:15Speaker 3: make my mark. I want to put my foot down
- 5:18Speaker 3: and say New York is a Mets town, which is
- 5:21Speaker 3: still not yet until they win a World Series or three.
- 5:25Speaker 3: And David Stearns is brought in to kind of be
- 5:29Speaker 3: that guy who's he's very like people said when he
- 5:34Speaker 3: got hired, he's a kid in a candy store. Well,
- 5:36Speaker 3: he understands that there's cavities that come with candy. He
- 5:40Speaker 3: understands all that stuff. And I think I think it
- 5:43Speaker 3: is going to be his legacy in New York if
- 5:45Speaker 3: it doesn't work out that he wasn't willing to make
- 5:49Speaker 3: the big splash that might look stupid in three years,
- 5:54Speaker 3: but is very very much worth it the first two
- 5:57Speaker 3: years of a contract.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Okay, let's get to a former met in Stephen mattz
- 6:04Speaker 1: aj We're on the show right now and everything can
- 6:07Speaker 1: be heard. But that's okay. Hey, we're on the show. Hello,
- 6:12Speaker 1: we can hear just for everyone. They are heard him
- 6:15Speaker 1: along the globe. So the bike's picking it up.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Just I don't care.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Warning the masses quick, Stephen mattz He signed uh two years,
- 6:29Speaker 1: raise raiser doing something two years.
- 6:33Speaker 4: It was two years.
- 6:36Speaker 1: We saw that we'll let Crats go first on this.
- 6:39Speaker 3: One good pickup. I was surprised it was two years,
- 6:44Speaker 3: and not because Steven Matts isn't worth it, because he's
- 6:47Speaker 3: definitely made himself into the Swiss Army knife kind of
- 6:50Speaker 3: pitcher in his career now. I was just looking it up.
- 6:53Speaker 3: In his career, he has one hundred and seventy two games,
- 6:56Speaker 3: started a lot of them early, but he saved two
- 7:00Speaker 3: games last year. He's coming out of the bullpen majority
- 7:03Speaker 3: from twenty four and twenty five. To me, he's never
- 7:07Speaker 3: been He was never when he was a starter He's
- 7:10Speaker 3: never a guy that was giving you seven or eight innings,
- 7:13Speaker 3: and I think teams have kind of seen this value.
- 7:16Speaker 3: And anytime the Rays give a pitcher a two year deal,
- 7:20Speaker 3: you say, what are they gonna do with them? Well,
- 7:23Speaker 3: the value is not to me, the value in Steven
- 7:25Speaker 3: Mattz is not gonna be in the bullpen as much
- 7:28Speaker 3: as that's how he was used last year with Boston
- 7:31Speaker 3: and Saint Louis. To me, I think they're gonna try
- 7:35Speaker 3: to do like a zach Eflin type of deal where
- 7:38Speaker 3: we're gonna get you to start. We're seeing this value
- 7:41Speaker 3: and I'd be surprised if he plays more than a
- 7:45Speaker 3: full season with the race.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I love this. This is what the Rays did.
- 7:52Speaker 2: They find these guys and next thing you know, Steven
- 7:54Speaker 2: Mats will throw two hundred and twenty, just throw all
- 7:58Speaker 2: breaking balls. I don't know the race we're gonna they're
- 8:00Speaker 2: all knuckleballs or.
- 8:01Speaker 4: So the Rays will do something. This is what we
- 8:03Speaker 4: talk about. You receive the match.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Two years is nice man.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Two years is his age good for him and he's
- 8:09Speaker 2: a value guy. He proved his value for He figured
- 8:12Speaker 2: some roll out that's been really nice.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Kratz. Things are happening. You want to talk me through
- 8:18Speaker 1: what Ken Rosenthal put out there. The Orioles match the
- 8:21Speaker 1: Phillies offer to Kyle Schwarber, and the Reds were also
- 8:26Speaker 1: at five years for Swarber. So we continue to get
- 8:29Speaker 1: more coming out about what went down. The problem I
- 8:34Speaker 1: have here is that you know you're gonna have to
- 8:38Speaker 1: beat the Phillies, and I know that's not exactly how
- 8:40Speaker 1: it works. It's not like Kyle goes to them and says, hey,
- 8:42Speaker 1: here's my number, although that does often happen in negotiations
- 8:44Speaker 1: where he's like, I'm at this. Sometimes the other side
- 8:49Speaker 1: doesn't believe that person or that rep But I think
- 8:53Speaker 1: that it went along the lines of I'm at this,
- 8:55Speaker 1: can you beat it? And clearly those teams did not
- 8:58Speaker 1: choose to beat it. I give a ton of credit
- 9:00Speaker 1: to them for at least going five years. You knew
- 9:02Speaker 1: that was what it was going to take. I'll continue
- 9:04Speaker 1: to shit on the Pirates for not being real. I
- 9:06Speaker 1: disagree with Ken, our buddy on that whole situation, But
- 9:10Speaker 1: thoughts on the Orioles and the Reds being in the
- 9:14Speaker 1: running for Kyle Schwarber.
- 9:17Speaker 3: I love that the Orioles made the same offer. Now
- 9:20Speaker 3: people hear it as oh, well, he shows the Phillies
- 9:23Speaker 3: over the I'm sure the Phillies said, go to free agency.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Whatever you're offered, bring it back to us and we'll
- 9:31Speaker 3: match it. That shows that Kyle wanted to play in
- 9:35Speaker 3: Philly again. Kyle enjoys what they've built and not quite
- 9:39Speaker 3: finished yet. Had they won the World Series this year,
- 9:41Speaker 3: maybe maybe Schwarber's like, you know what, I'll go somewhere
- 9:45Speaker 3: else and see what else there is out there. We'll
- 9:47Speaker 3: never know. But the fact that the Orioles made the
- 9:50Speaker 3: same offer, the fact that the Reds made the same offer.
- 9:53Speaker 3: What do both of those teams have position player wise?
- 9:57Speaker 3: Young players who are trying to establish themselves in the
- 10:02Speaker 3: big leagues and they understand what kind of value Kyle
- 10:06Speaker 3: Schwarber brings to a roster of young guys. Could he
- 10:11Speaker 3: make both of those teams better? One? Could he make
- 10:15Speaker 3: both of those teams better for more than the five
- 10:18Speaker 3: years that he's there. Absolutely, Because anytime that you're able
- 10:21Speaker 3: to dive into, you know, the psyche of a Gunner
- 10:26Speaker 3: Henderson who was a top three MVP candidate and then
- 10:29Speaker 3: started off the season a little bit injured, and you're
- 10:32Speaker 3: able to say, Hey, this is how I approached this guy,
- 10:35Speaker 3: this is how I dealt with the fact that my
- 10:38Speaker 3: second year, third year, fifth year in the league, Lefty
- 10:41Speaker 3: started feeding me more sliders and I used to take
- 10:44Speaker 3: the ball the other way. Schwarber will bring so much
- 10:49Speaker 3: information to a team like that. As Orioles fans, you
- 10:54Speaker 3: got to be excited about it. And I'm not going
- 10:57Speaker 3: to trash on these offers because they got to the
- 11:00Speaker 3: five years. Was it enough money? No? But was it
- 11:03Speaker 3: ever going to be enough money? Had they gone to
- 11:05Speaker 3: one sixty, that's ten million more, Schubert probably would have
- 11:10Speaker 3: gone to mister Middleton and the Phillies and said, I
- 11:13Speaker 3: just got one sixty. What do you got? So I
- 11:16Speaker 3: don't think they would have ever gotten there. But to
- 11:19Speaker 3: me as an Orioles fan and a Reds fan, it
- 11:22Speaker 3: shows me is there's somebody else on the market that
- 11:24Speaker 3: I can now say, Okay, they're willing to go. Let's
- 11:29Speaker 3: say it's one forty, or for the Orioles it was
- 11:31Speaker 3: one fifty. Who can we go and add to this lineup?
- 11:36Speaker 3: Or for the Orioles probably needed more in the rotation.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Who can we add to the rotation for one hundred
- 11:42Speaker 3: and fifty million. See if the Oriols do it, because
- 11:44Speaker 3: they did it last year. They made the offer last
- 11:46Speaker 3: year to Corbyn Burns and it was short. I think
- 11:49Speaker 3: they knew it was going to be short, but it
- 11:51Speaker 3: was short.
- 11:54Speaker 1: So here's the deal with how things work. Once a
- 11:57Speaker 1: player ends up signing somewhere and then the losing offers
- 12:01Speaker 1: come out, the teams want those to get out. They
- 12:04Speaker 1: want their fan base to know that they were in it.
- 12:06Speaker 1: They tried, they put good money out there, and they
- 12:08Speaker 1: should that's great. The other side of the coin is
- 12:11Speaker 1: the fan base looks and says, okay, so you've got that,
- 12:15Speaker 1: where's it going now? Like you mentioned, okay, let's take
- 12:19Speaker 1: some of that. Let's look for pitching. Where is it
- 12:21Speaker 1: going now? I don't know how the Orioles look at
- 12:25Speaker 1: their roster and feel like they've got a winning pitching
- 12:28Speaker 1: staff or even anything close to it.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Do you not at all? And it shows you where
- 12:35Speaker 3: Michaelias is okay spending money. Who did he go out
- 12:38Speaker 3: and get last year? Sigano. He tried to get Burns,
- 12:44Speaker 3: but they were like, we don't want to get you know,
- 12:46Speaker 3: we'll get too deep into a contract there. So we can't.
- 12:49Speaker 3: We just can't play in the max freed market. We
- 12:51Speaker 3: can't play in the We got a trade for our
- 12:53Speaker 3: pitchers because he's risk adverse on pitching. He went out
- 12:57Speaker 3: and got Tyler O'Neill was his biggest expenditure in the offseason,
- 13:02Speaker 3: like another position player. Clearly, Michael Ias says, I'm good
- 13:07Speaker 3: with just just paying for a position player, a lot
- 13:11Speaker 3: less risk to me, you gotta this is the time
- 13:15Speaker 3: to strike and push like you pushed for Kyle Schwarber,
- 13:19Speaker 3: push for a starting pitcher, not just pushing for Trek
- 13:23Speaker 3: Scooble and say, uh, you know, we couldn't get Trek
- 13:26Speaker 3: Skuble away from the Tigers because we didn't want to
- 13:29Speaker 3: get rid of four of our top prospects.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I'm with you, good call, got some other things I'll
- 13:38Speaker 1: float your way as it's coming through. The Edwin Diaz
- 13:42Speaker 1: contract has deferrals in it, and it's for four and
- 13:47Speaker 1: a half million dollars per year. According to Joel Sherman.
- 13:51Speaker 1: That puts the luxury tax number at around twenty one
- 13:55Speaker 1: million per season. So shot, there's deferrals in the deal.
- 14:02Speaker 1: The Mets also had deferrals in the deal for Edwin
- 14:05Speaker 1: Diaz eventually we'll get the number. Usually they come up
- 14:07Speaker 1: with the number the net present value, which is important
- 14:10Speaker 1: and I can talk all about it because AJ is
- 14:12Speaker 1: not on right now and he doesn't understand how that works.
- 14:16Speaker 1: But twenty one million dollars per year for three years
- 14:22Speaker 1: is how much they end up getting Edwin Diaz for right,
- 14:26Speaker 1: And we saw that Devin Williams was three point fifty
- 14:29Speaker 1: ish with all the deferral mish mash right. Yes, So
- 14:34Speaker 1: I mean again I don't have final math numbers, and
- 14:37Speaker 1: there's different comps the Players Association versus the luxury packs number,
- 14:40Speaker 1: those numbers are all different, right, But the point is
- 14:43Speaker 1: Edwin Diaz essentially signed for a very similar number to
- 14:49Speaker 1: Devin Williams. I don't understand that one.
- 14:56Speaker 3: It's it's not similar. It's definitely about four million, four
- 14:59Speaker 3: million year different. So there's that's significant. That is significant.
- 15:04Speaker 3: But what's not significant? But yeah, it is like just
- 15:10Speaker 3: the sheer number of saves, the sheer numbers of two
- 15:14Speaker 3: guys that came off of platform years. You talk about
- 15:16Speaker 3: Edwin Diaz had a one six y three is era
- 15:21Speaker 3: plus last year was I mean, this isn't even it's
- 15:26Speaker 3: not even fair. Eer plus is a little bit different
- 15:28Speaker 3: for relievers, but it was a two forty eight ERA
- 15:32Speaker 3: plus last year. And you look at it. Devin Williams,
- 15:37Speaker 3: who has you're talking about Edwin Diaz has two hundred
- 15:40Speaker 3: and fifty three career saves. Devin Williams had a down year.
- 15:43Speaker 3: He doesn't even have one hundred saves yet. So you're
- 15:47Speaker 3: looking at it and you say, Okay, his ERA plus
- 15:50Speaker 3: last year was eighty five. So the fact that the
- 15:56Speaker 3: numbers are close, I am so surprised at the MET.
- 15:59Speaker 3: I mean, the numbers are not close. I'm surprised that
- 16:02Speaker 3: the numbers. As far as financially, the Mets would not
- 16:06Speaker 3: bring back Edwin Diaz.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I just don't. Yeah, like you already had him here, Kratz.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I'd rather pay a little bit more and get the
- 16:14Speaker 1: commodity that I know. It's not that Devin Williams is bad.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And yes, I know his stuff was good, but his
- 16:18Speaker 1: results were not great. I know it was a rocky start,
- 16:20Speaker 1: but his results were not great, and he felt like
- 16:23Speaker 1: he figured out how to pitch in New York. Okay,
- 16:25Speaker 1: until the next adversity strikes. For me, I don't think
- 16:30Speaker 1: there is a I don't think there's a comparison here
- 16:33Speaker 1: for what would have made sense for the Mets to
- 16:35Speaker 1: lock down their ninth inning.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:38Speaker 1: We did not see a full brilliant season from Devin Williams.
- 16:41Speaker 1: We saw flashes. We saw guys reaching down for his
- 16:45Speaker 1: change up and turning it into Knox when that didn't
- 16:49Speaker 1: happen in the past. Again, really good picture, good stuff.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I like Edwin Diaz way better. And this leads us
- 16:56Speaker 1: to Anthony Nacomo reporting on pet Alnzo, who is here
- 17:00Speaker 1: today in Orlando, not meeting with the Mets. They already
- 17:03Speaker 1: know each other very well. But Anthony Dicomo said he
- 17:07Speaker 1: covers the Mets for MLB. He said the sticking point
- 17:10Speaker 1: between the Mets. Oh no, this was from Mark finesand
- 17:13Speaker 1: actually who also inside of f MLB. Mark said the
- 17:16Speaker 1: sticking point between the Mets and Alonzo could very well
- 17:19Speaker 1: be years, as sources say the Mets baby hesitant to
- 17:22Speaker 1: go more than three years with the first baseman. Okay, well,
- 17:27Speaker 1: it's about to get swiped again, like do you want
- 17:30Speaker 1: him or not? I mean they want him at a
- 17:31Speaker 1: certain level. I think another team should jump in for
- 17:34Speaker 1: someone like him too. It's not just first. I think
- 17:38Speaker 1: he can age well as a designated hitter, don't you.
- 17:43Speaker 3: It's not like you have a designated hitter already, Like,
- 17:46Speaker 3: why would he? To me, somebody has to answer me
- 17:51Speaker 3: why a five year deal would not play well? Why
- 17:55Speaker 3: is that because of what happened to Jose Braden, because
- 17:59Speaker 3: of what happened to other guy? Like there's no team
- 18:02Speaker 3: that knows Pete better than the Mets, and there's no
- 18:05Speaker 3: team that knows the Mets better than Pete Alonzo. To me,
- 18:10Speaker 3: you've lost two cornerstone pieces of this recent this recent
- 18:16Speaker 3: build of Mets, and I think I think you can't
- 18:21Speaker 3: miss out on Pete. I don't know where. Where do
- 18:23Speaker 3: they go? They're gonna say, well, we'll put Mark, We'll
- 18:26Speaker 3: put Vientos's Vientos is twenty two to twenty seven home
- 18:31Speaker 3: runs over at first base, Like you're just going to
- 18:34Speaker 3: create a first basement because you don't want to give
- 18:36Speaker 3: Pete two extra years on top of what makes you uncomfortable,
- 18:40Speaker 3: Like three years. Well, yeah, it's great if you can
- 18:43Speaker 3: get the deal for three years, but do you want him?
- 18:46Speaker 3: Do you want him? And can you replace guaranteed forty
- 18:49Speaker 3: homers at first base?
- 18:52Speaker 1: I'm going to bring aj into this conversation. So since
- 18:55Speaker 1: you've been gone, but you've been gone exactly, I did
- 18:58Speaker 1: that for you. We learned that there are four and
- 19:01Speaker 1: a half million dollars a year in deferrals in Edmund
- 19:04Speaker 1: Diez's deal, so it's more like a three year sixty ish,
- 19:07Speaker 1: So it's pretty damn close to the Devin Williams three
- 19:10Speaker 1: year fifty right. But moving to Pee Alonzo, where Mark
- 19:13Speaker 1: Finesan reported, I'm just explaining the money. We already talked
- 19:18Speaker 1: about that when you were gone. But Mark Finesand said,
- 19:23Speaker 1: it sounds like years are going to be a hang
- 19:25Speaker 1: up for Mets and Pete Alonzo at three years, and
- 19:29Speaker 1: I'm like, Pete Alonzo's two years younger than Kyle Schwarber.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I know that he wants to play first base, but
- 19:35Speaker 1: he absolutely can be a DH whether it's next year
- 19:39Speaker 1: or beyond four or five years. For Pee Alonzo, for example,
- 19:43Speaker 1: one forty four ops plus this past season thirty eight homers.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Kyle Schwarber hit many more the Mets ballpark wise, it's
- 19:50Speaker 1: probably top five pitchers park and he's putting up numbers
- 19:54Speaker 1: like that. Schwarber's one fifty ops plus in terms of
- 19:57Speaker 1: the way that the that you wait average right against
- 20:01Speaker 1: the league and the ballpark. Peter Alonzo and Kyle Schwarber
- 20:05Speaker 1: were pretty close this past season.
- 20:07Speaker 2: And also, let's not forget we were giving Schwarber all
- 20:10Speaker 2: this love for his clubhouse presidence and all that. Peter
- 20:13Speaker 2: Alonzo from what you when you talk to people on
- 20:15Speaker 2: the Mets, pee A. Lonzo ain't far behind, like his
- 20:18Speaker 2: clubhouse presidents and what he brings to that team every day,
- 20:22Speaker 2: the energy and all that stuff.
- 20:23Speaker 5: I listen.
- 20:25Speaker 4: I love Pete Alonso. I think he's he's an unbelievable player.
- 20:28Speaker 5: I just I don't know. I can't believe the Mets.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Just Uncle Stevie, he needs to open that checkbook and
- 20:34Speaker 2: just finish this.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I just think that David Stearns and his staff don't
- 20:39Speaker 1: love the profile.
- 20:40Speaker 5: But Dave, okay, So what does David Searns love.
- 20:44Speaker 1: The Brewers?
- 20:46Speaker 5: I'm serious, Like christ you know him better than I do.
- 20:48Speaker 5: What does he love?
- 20:49Speaker 3: What?
- 20:49Speaker 5: Like? What's his He said he doesn't love the profile?
- 20:51Speaker 5: What what does he love?
- 20:53Speaker 3: I think he likes finding finding value in places, and
- 20:56Speaker 3: I think he's being a very good steward of his money.
- 21:00Speaker 3: He is not he is not just going and spending
- 21:04Speaker 3: frivolously because he doesn't want to put the Mets in
- 21:08Speaker 3: a situation five ten years down the road where they're hamstrung.
- 21:14Speaker 3: And he's I'm assuming, I'm just this is not anything
- 21:18Speaker 3: he's told me. I'm assuming he sees other organizations that
- 21:22Speaker 3: could be set up for something down the road where
- 21:26Speaker 3: it's not necessarily a good look. You know, you're an
- 21:31Speaker 3: aging roster. To me, there's gotta be some kind of
- 21:35Speaker 3: kind of like what Michaelias is doing down in Baltimore.
- 21:37Speaker 3: There's got to be some kind of give and take.
- 21:39Speaker 3: You got to go outside of your comfort bubble and
- 21:42Speaker 3: maybe maybe him and Stevie Cohen. Uncle Stevie said, look,
- 21:46Speaker 3: we're definitely doing the wan Soto. I don't care what
- 21:48Speaker 3: money it takes. We're doing it. And Stearns was like,
- 21:52Speaker 3: that's fine. I just want you to know that I'm
- 21:55Speaker 3: not going to act like that. I'm not gonna push.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I'm not gonna push like that because I don't think
- 21:59Speaker 3: it is worth it, and I have history that says
- 22:03Speaker 3: it's not worth it. But the reality is New York
- 22:07Speaker 3: Mets need to start winning, and if they don't start winning,
- 22:10Speaker 3: some of these negotiations all of a sudden, you're gonna
- 22:14Speaker 3: be looking at one Soto and Lindor. Like the team
- 22:20Speaker 3: all of a sudden doesn't have a whole lot because
- 22:22Speaker 3: we've seen they need a lot of pitching. But if
- 22:24Speaker 3: you get rid of Nemo, I think twenty five or
- 22:28Speaker 3: twenty seven home runs, you don't re sign Pete. Now
- 22:32Speaker 3: that's forty plus every single year. You're all of a sudden,
- 22:37Speaker 3: like you shouldn't be claiming guys off of the DFA
- 22:41Speaker 3: list to fill out your roster when you're in New
- 22:45Speaker 3: York and you have Uncle Stevie's money.
- 22:47Speaker 1: And they're not. I mean, they have good prospects, their
- 22:49Speaker 1: farm systems in a good place right now, but as
- 22:52Speaker 1: you saw at the end of last year, it's more
- 22:55Speaker 1: tilted towards pitching. In mind, they love this guy Carson
- 22:58Speaker 1: Benz who's now filler have Jet Williams. So there's two guys, right,
- 23:02Speaker 1: but maybe one of them works out where they're a
- 23:04Speaker 1: really productive player. I'm just playing the math game on prospects. Okay,
- 23:09Speaker 1: still got a lot to fill for a team that
- 23:12Speaker 1: has the top three payroll, A.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Lot of holes because when you because when you sign
- 23:18Speaker 2: a Wan Soto that there's so much that's already involved there,
- 23:22Speaker 2: and then you have already have Lindor and then you
- 23:24Speaker 2: trade for Simeon. I know it's kind of a wash
- 23:26Speaker 2: with the NEMO, but there's three guys that are making
- 23:31Speaker 2: throwing McNeil and you throw in all these I mean,
- 23:34Speaker 2: right there, three guys, you have one hundred million.
- 23:38Speaker 3: So I'll put this, I'll put this back at you, guys. Scott.
- 23:43Speaker 3: You asked Darraffneckmark, and you asked us who would you
- 23:47Speaker 3: rather have Dz or Pete Alonzo. Here's my question, who
- 23:52Speaker 3: would you rather have Framber Valdez or Pete Alonzo? Because clearly,
- 23:59Speaker 3: right now, as we're sitting here today December ninth, the
- 24:02Speaker 3: Mets have to choose. Your answer is going to be both.
- 24:07Speaker 3: The Mets clearly are showing who do you want? Who
- 24:10Speaker 3: do you want Framber for six or seven years or
- 24:15Speaker 3: Pete for five?
- 24:16Speaker 1: Ranger Suarez just because I think Framber needs to go
- 24:19Speaker 1: to a smaller market, but I think it's the same concept. Well,
- 24:22Speaker 1: I would say the Toronto Blue Jays are the talk
- 24:25Speaker 1: of the off season for now.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Schnyder's right there, Kraill.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Schneider right here, Dylan getting signed there you go. Cody
- 24:34Speaker 1: Ponce was signed by this team, not as well known
- 24:37Speaker 1: of a name, but could be a big impact guy too.
- 24:39Speaker 1: We're seeing what the deals with them with Kyle Tucker
- 24:42Speaker 1: and Boba Chet. But wait, they also might shed a
- 24:45Speaker 1: player off their roster. We learned a little bit more
- 24:49Speaker 1: about Jose Brios's situation. Did you guys see this? He
- 24:54Speaker 1: was pissed about being left off the roster all that
- 24:57Speaker 1: I also heard.
- 24:57Speaker 4: About those people. It's crazy. I went through this before. Kratz.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I don't know if you ever were on a team
- 25:06Speaker 2: where you were left I was in twenty fourteen. I
- 25:07Speaker 2: was on the Cardinals and Mike Metheni called me and said, hey,
- 25:10Speaker 2: we're leaving you off the ALDS or NLDS roster. And
- 25:13Speaker 2: I said okay, and he goes, you have the choice.
- 25:15Speaker 2: You can go with the team or you can you
- 25:16Speaker 2: can go home. And I'm like, I'm part of the team.
- 25:18Speaker 2: I'm going with the team to La right. So I
- 25:21Speaker 2: flew and cheered my ass off and we won that
- 25:23Speaker 2: series and the next series. Guess what I had to
- 25:25Speaker 2: play because yacht he got hurt, right, So I don't
- 25:28Speaker 2: understand that he wasn't there. He like for the LCS,
- 25:31Speaker 2: I think, and the World Series.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Yeah, so Ross Atkins spoke like what yesterday he said
- 25:35Speaker 1: he was removed from the rotation, not with the days
- 25:37Speaker 1: during the World Series. Disappointed he wasn't in the rotation.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I mean, he said in the quote, handled it well
- 25:43Speaker 1: on why he wasn't seen much in the postseason. Think
- 25:45Speaker 1: he was just having a tough time.
- 25:51Speaker 4: Huh.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I get it. I get it. You're pissed, But
- 25:55Speaker 3: then you get your you get your two days. You
- 25:57Speaker 3: guys had days off. You're told you're not on the
- 25:59Speaker 3: playoff roster. You gave everything you had this season, your
- 26:03Speaker 3: thirty one starts. You know what, you stay ready. Maybe
- 26:08Speaker 3: there's another round that you do need to be needed in,
- 26:10Speaker 3: Like they sure as heck don't want to call somebody
- 26:13Speaker 3: up from the minor leagues to fill the spot if
- 26:15Speaker 3: they're like you, stay ready. A team win a victory
- 26:19Speaker 3: in the World's winning the World Series is not done
- 26:23Speaker 3: just by the twenty six guys that are on that roster.
- 26:26Speaker 3: It's guys that were there for half a season, Guys
- 26:29Speaker 3: that were there for an entire season and get left
- 26:31Speaker 3: off the roster because a roster construction, like you need
- 26:35Speaker 3: to be the best. That's a perfect time to be
- 26:37Speaker 3: the best teammate. And if you're pissed good, be ready,
- 26:42Speaker 3: be around, be available. So I get it. It's tough,
- 26:47Speaker 3: but the Blue Jays they're clearly focused on wanting to
- 26:51Speaker 3: win a World Series. And if he's won, that is like, hey,
- 26:54Speaker 3: you know what, I'm not willing to what did stromanshay?
- 26:57Speaker 3: What did Stroman say last year in spring training? I'm
- 27:01Speaker 3: not a reliever. I'm a starter. Like if there's if
- 27:04Speaker 3: you know, if he's willing to draw a line in
- 27:07Speaker 3: the sand, then you know he might not be on
- 27:10Speaker 3: this team by from what from what we're from what
- 27:13Speaker 3: we're hearing from Ken.
- 27:16Speaker 4: My whole thing is why why do you? I understand it?
- 27:20Speaker 4: Kind of a crowd said, do you understand? You're mad?
- 27:22Speaker 2: But you still have been on this team for a
- 27:24Speaker 2: long time and you battled with these guys the entire
- 27:27Speaker 2: year and years going back, and here's your chance to enjoy.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Even if you're not on the field, you still have
- 27:34Speaker 2: a chance to be around your guys and help out.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Maybe you can say something to a pitcher or a hitter,
- 27:38Speaker 2: Hey I saw this or I noticed this right, one
- 27:41Speaker 2: little thing that might change a game and help them win.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Be there for that. Be a cheerleader, cheer your ass off.
- 27:47Speaker 2: I remember went, like I said, twenty fourteen and the Ods.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I cheered my ass off for the Cardinals. And I
- 27:52Speaker 2: was only there for a few months, but I was
- 27:55Speaker 2: locked in and descalso and John Jay and Adam, Wayne
- 27:59Speaker 2: Right and Mad those guys are friends for life because
- 28:02Speaker 2: we went through that together and we didn't win, but
- 28:04Speaker 2: we were there and I was there, Like, this is
- 28:06Speaker 2: what you don't want to miss.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Man.
- 28:07Speaker 2: You play your whole freaking life to get a chance
- 28:10Speaker 2: to go the World Series. Whether you're on the roster
- 28:12Speaker 2: or not, you're in the World Series and you can
- 28:15Speaker 2: help your brothers in the fight. I'm sorry, but this
- 28:19Speaker 2: is just a bad look man, Like you gotta be
- 28:22Speaker 2: especially now.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Listen, I'll say this, I.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Think do we lose us, But I'll say this, like,
- 28:37Speaker 2: if you're the twenty you know, thirtieth guy or whatever, Okay, great,
- 28:41Speaker 2: but this guy was a part.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Of their rotation for years, Like he should be there.
- 28:45Speaker 2: He should be in that dugout, he should be on
- 28:47Speaker 2: those flights, he should be in those meetings. Because again,
- 28:50Speaker 2: maybe Pete Walker sees something and Burrio sees something different
- 28:53Speaker 2: and he's like, I saw this, I faced this guy
- 28:55Speaker 2: this one time, and this pitch worked and it might
- 28:57Speaker 2: help us win the World Series.
- 28:59Speaker 3: That's it.
- 29:00Speaker 4: It's just about being there for your boys.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Man.
- 29:03Speaker 1: He was with the club through the end of the
- 29:04Speaker 1: Alcs and then he left before the World Series.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Okay, oh, you got to the World Series. You can't
- 29:11Speaker 2: sit there for another ten days.
- 29:12Speaker 4: At the most.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I'm like in pain even learning the news like that.
- 29:16Speaker 2: I know, because all I've heard about Brios was what
- 29:18Speaker 2: a great dude you was, What a great teammate he was.
- 29:22Speaker 1: You can't baby at that point in life, right, You
- 29:25Speaker 1: guys always say you're doing this, it's.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Not about you at that point. It's not about craps.
- 29:30Speaker 4: It's not about you at that point. It is about
- 29:32Speaker 4: your team winning the ultimate prize, which is the World Series.
- 29:36Speaker 4: It's not about you.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Like, no matter what your feelings are at that point,
- 29:39Speaker 2: your feelings go out to win it. Remember we talked
- 29:41Speaker 2: to Max Muncie and they won the World Series last
- 29:43Speaker 2: year and he went, oh for the World Series, and
- 29:45Speaker 2: you know what he said, nobody gives a shit because
- 29:47Speaker 2: we won the World Series and nobody remembers that I
- 29:50Speaker 2: didn't get a hit, and this year, right, they won
- 29:52Speaker 2: the World Series again, and guess what, whoever didn't have
- 29:55Speaker 2: a World I don't even know who had good World Series?
- 29:57Speaker 4: Who did?
- 29:57Speaker 2: Obviously we know who the MVP is, Yamamoto and all
- 30:00Speaker 2: this and that, but I can't tell you who got
- 30:01Speaker 2: hits and who did it.
- 30:03Speaker 4: All I know is the Dodgers won. Doesn't matter. Winning
- 30:05Speaker 4: cures everything.
- 30:07Speaker 1: One fan replied on a tweet when this quote got
- 30:12Speaker 1: out there, and they were like, if the Blue Jays
- 30:15Speaker 1: had won, does he want to ring because he doesn't
- 30:18Speaker 1: even want to be there. He doesn't give a shit.
- 30:19Speaker 1: I'm sorry, you gotta be harsh about that. You tell me,
- 30:23Speaker 1: how would this go? How would this go? Guy that's
- 30:25Speaker 1: been there for a while, pretty nice guy. All of
- 30:27Speaker 1: a sudden you get this curve ball where you're trying
- 30:29Speaker 1: to focus on winning a World Series and he's not
- 30:31Speaker 1: even there.
- 30:32Speaker 4: I'm saying, it's not about you at that point.
- 30:34Speaker 2: You do every you throw everything you can into those
- 30:38Speaker 2: seven games series. If it's gonna be seven games to
- 30:41Speaker 2: win four games, you.
- 30:42Speaker 4: You literally when people say.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Like this is an extreme, I died for that, Like
- 30:47Speaker 2: you literally you're hurt, you're this. You throw every ounce
- 30:50Speaker 2: of energy that you have in your soul at that
- 30:55Speaker 2: for those ten games, and you say, I am ten games,
- 30:57Speaker 2: ten days, seven games, every ounce of focus. I love
- 31:02Speaker 2: your family, I love your mom and dad, I love
- 31:04Speaker 2: your wife, kids, all that, but my focus for the
- 31:06Speaker 2: next ten days is on these seven games.
- 31:09Speaker 4: And it's not about you.
- 31:10Speaker 2: It's about the twenty five other dudes, the coaches, and
- 31:14Speaker 2: all the people that got you that one.
- 31:15Speaker 1: What if someone got hurt in the World Series and
- 31:17Speaker 1: he could have rescued them.
- 31:19Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying.
- 31:19Speaker 1: You're not there. You're get you're getting paid prats to
- 31:23Speaker 1: do that. Butse A Brios makes a lot of money.
- 31:27Speaker 1: You're not there. I'm actually surprised that you can't find
- 31:31Speaker 1: or suspend.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Or do something.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Clearly, the Blue Jays are taking the high road. He
- 31:35Speaker 1: can just be like cool, I'm out. He's on the roster.
- 31:38Speaker 1: He's not on the playoff roster, but he's on the
- 31:41Speaker 1: freaking team.
- 31:42Speaker 3: Why are you saying not because he's not getting paid
- 31:46Speaker 3: Technically the championship season is like, technically, you wouldn't have
- 31:50Speaker 3: to stay if you're not an active player. I remember
- 31:53Speaker 3: one year I got I wasn't take I wasn't put
- 31:56Speaker 3: on the roster for the one for the one series
- 31:58Speaker 3: and they were like, do you want to go down
- 31:59Speaker 3: to Florida and stay ready? I was like, no, I
- 32:03Speaker 3: want to stay ready with the team here, Like there's
- 32:06Speaker 3: nothing that mimics the environment that if something happens, I
- 32:10Speaker 3: have to come back and be ready, Like I don't
- 32:12Speaker 3: think they have to. I don't think that if you're
- 32:15Speaker 3: not on the roster, they don't have to mandate that
- 32:16Speaker 3: you're there like a fine or anything. But it's gonna change.
- 32:20Speaker 3: It's gonna change a little bit. In the moment, none
- 32:23Speaker 3: of his teammates are sitting there going, oh, man, I
- 32:26Speaker 3: wish Josey was here. I wish he was here. And
- 32:29Speaker 3: maybe that makes him feel bad because he's like, oh,
- 32:31Speaker 3: I'm not even a part of this. But everything aj
- 32:34Speaker 3: said is exactly spot on. But now this year, if
- 32:39Speaker 3: he is not traded, how does that make them feel?
- 32:43Speaker 3: I'll tell you, when the dust settles, you sit there
- 32:46Speaker 3: and you know who had your back, who was who
- 32:49Speaker 3: was riding with the boys, what those people did. There's
- 32:53Speaker 3: different levels of every you know, some starters think that
- 32:57Speaker 3: the bench guys don't really have that big a piece
- 33:00Speaker 3: to this. Some bench guys think that the guys in
- 33:04Speaker 3: the stay hot camp don't have a piece to it.
- 33:06Speaker 3: But every single person that has something to do with
- 33:10Speaker 3: this team getting to Game seven, getting to one out
- 33:15Speaker 3: in the top of the ninth inning in Game seven
- 33:18Speaker 3: of the World Series with a lead, has something to
- 33:22Speaker 3: do with that moment, and it's important anybody that bails
- 33:27Speaker 3: on that. And at the end of the day you
- 33:28Speaker 3: sit back and you're like, wait a minute, he bailed
- 33:30Speaker 3: on us. What happened? What if It's like the old
- 33:33Speaker 3: dumb and dumber skit, like what if they had shot
- 33:36Speaker 3: you in the face. We were willing to take that risk.
- 33:39Speaker 3: What if somebody what if Trey you Savage gets hurt
- 33:42Speaker 3: in his first outing and they need another starter. You
- 33:46Speaker 3: think they're just going to Louis v Arland. No, they
- 33:48Speaker 3: want a starter. Hosey, where are you not there? You
- 33:53Speaker 3: didn't choose.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Preparing for the World Series?
- 33:57Speaker 2: But again, you work your whole life. He's ever been
- 33:59Speaker 2: to the World Series. He got to the World Series.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Even if you're not there, go there and soak up
- 34:04Speaker 2: the moment. Sit in Toronto in the dugout and just
- 34:07Speaker 2: look around and be and just wow. I'm in the
- 34:11Speaker 2: game seven of the World Series. I'm not playing, but
- 34:14Speaker 2: I at least I got the best seat in the house.
- 34:15Speaker 2: I'm in the dugout on one of the teams fighting
- 34:17Speaker 2: for a championship.
- 34:21Speaker 4: It'll help, It'll help you down the road because at
- 34:22Speaker 4: least you get to soak in the environment.
- 34:24Speaker 1: They would love to trade him. I would. I will
- 34:27Speaker 1: promise you that they would love to trade him. This
- 34:30Speaker 1: does not get mended easily. And he is coming off
- 34:34Speaker 1: a bad year, right, Yeah, he was in the fours.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Expected number of peripheral kind of stuff was even worse
- 34:39Speaker 1: that the front offices. Look at he's owed three years
- 34:42Speaker 1: sixty six million dollars. He has not that after next season,
- 34:45Speaker 1: He's not going to do that. He's probably worth I
- 34:48Speaker 1: mean right now, he's more along the lines of back
- 34:51Speaker 1: end starter.
- 34:52Speaker 4: So he's hurt. Wasn't he hurt though?
- 34:53Speaker 1: Yeah, there was an elbow issue late, but he I
- 34:56Speaker 1: mean not the whole year. As far as I know,
- 34:58Speaker 1: he's crats in a free agent market right now. I
- 35:01Speaker 1: think he signs for maybe like two twenty or one
- 35:06Speaker 1: fifteen or something like that. Right he doesn't get offered
- 35:09Speaker 1: a qualifying offer. Okay, fifteen to seventeen, So fifteen to
- 35:13Speaker 1: seventeen on one year. That's how teams are gonna evaluate.
- 35:16Speaker 1: There's sixty six million dollars left, so the Blue Jays
- 35:19Speaker 1: would have to pay most of that money down. And
- 35:21Speaker 1: now you also just got this little tidbit.
- 35:25Speaker 2: This reminds me Scratch just I don't know, Scott won't
- 35:27Speaker 2: get Scott kind of will get this analogy. This reminds
- 35:30Speaker 2: me of Notre Dame going, we're not going to the championship,
- 35:33Speaker 2: So we're gonna take our ball and go home because
- 35:35Speaker 2: we didn't get what we wanted. So we're just gonna
- 35:37Speaker 2: not play in a bowl game because we'll show you,
- 35:39Speaker 2: guys how important we are by not going to the
- 35:42Speaker 2: Pop Tard Bowl.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody cares.
- 35:45Speaker 4: No, but you're happy because Miami's in.
- 35:48Speaker 1: They beat their ass.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Sorry, I know, I agree. Yeah, you don't like it?
- 35:52Speaker 4: Play better?
- 35:53Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't know, guys, I mean it sounds
- 35:57Speaker 1: like you're disappointed. I would be downright furious if I'm
- 36:01Speaker 1: the organization. How about the front office?
- 36:03Speaker 4: How about the other guy's spent millions.
- 36:04Speaker 2: On thisast starter went to the bullpen yeahd did special
- 36:08Speaker 2: things for him, helped him get to Game seven, right,
- 36:11Speaker 2: I mean, actuers are nutted up bigger than anybody. Velocity
- 36:16Speaker 2: up found feeling in his thumb, all that stuff. I mean,
- 36:20Speaker 2: these guys, they fought there till the end, literally till
- 36:23Speaker 2: the end.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I don't want him showing back up in the clubhouse
- 36:26Speaker 1: because the Blue Jays have such great vibes. I know
- 36:29Speaker 1: that Jose's nice and whatever, but to me, it's one
- 36:31Speaker 1: of those things that you never escape from. Reputation wisecrats,
- 36:35Speaker 1: and it's one thing for him to change scenery and
- 36:37Speaker 1: then just go somewhere else, but to be back with
- 36:39Speaker 1: that same team after that incident. And it's not even
- 36:43Speaker 1: just like one thing where he got in a fight
- 36:44Speaker 1: with someone. It's like you made a conscious decision and
- 36:46Speaker 1: every day you just decided, Nope, screw this team. I'm
- 36:51Speaker 1: gonna be home. I think even if they have to
- 36:53Speaker 1: eat eighty percent of the contract I'm trading him.
- 36:57Speaker 3: I don't think they have to eat that much of
- 36:58Speaker 3: the contract. I think they're is value. We've seen it.
- 37:02Speaker 3: There's value in the fact that since twenty eighteen he
- 37:06Speaker 3: has made every one of his starts, and so you
- 37:10Speaker 3: know he's pitching through things, whether his peripherals are down
- 37:14Speaker 3: or they're up. Yes, the value is not there in
- 37:16Speaker 3: that sense. But he's made every one of his starts
- 37:18Speaker 3: for the last seven full seasons so.
- 37:22Speaker 4: Till this year, until this.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Year, thirty one, thirty thirty starts.
- 37:27Speaker 4: But at the end he had elbow Okay, so I
- 37:32Speaker 4: have an elbow thing.
- 37:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 37:35Speaker 1: See, My thing is, didn't we didn't. We all have
- 37:38Speaker 1: the indication that he was hurt. The elbow thing was
- 37:41Speaker 1: holding him back in the postseason, so everyone said, And
- 37:44Speaker 1: it doesn't sound like that was the case here.
- 37:48Speaker 3: But my thing is, never in his career has he
- 37:52Speaker 3: ever been passed over, not been the guy. And this
- 37:56Speaker 3: is the first time this has come up. I might
- 37:59Speaker 3: be willing to him a pass. I might be willing
- 38:01Speaker 3: to give him a pass. Not with the Blue Jays,
- 38:04Speaker 3: the Blue Jays, Pete Walker, John Schneider, They're gonna have
- 38:07Speaker 3: to be the ones that makes make the decision, you know,
- 38:09Speaker 3: based on how he truly handled it. We're only hearing
- 38:13Speaker 3: some of the background stuff. They know all the information.
- 38:16Speaker 3: To me, another team has to be willing to say, well,
- 38:21Speaker 3: we didn't have anybody that made all thirty two starts.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Let's check the health stuff. Let's see why he missed
- 38:27Speaker 3: his last start of the season, see why they left
- 38:30Speaker 3: him off. And I'm willing to take a shot now,
- 38:35Speaker 3: I bet, I bet they can find somebody that will
- 38:37Speaker 3: easily pay forty forty five million for three years. To me,
- 38:42Speaker 3: that that's a deal for some that's a steal for somebody.
- 38:45Speaker 3: That's now, that's gonna make us thirty two starts.
- 38:51Speaker 1: No, I don't think so. And I'll tell you why
- 38:55Speaker 1: right now. He's a free agent. Would you get a
- 38:57Speaker 1: qualifying offer? I don't think he would. Okay, no qualifying
- 39:00Speaker 1: offer hits free agency? What does he get? You think
- 39:03Speaker 1: you would get a qualifying offer?
- 39:04Speaker 3: Crats before before all this stuff came out, one hund
- 39:11Speaker 3: oh jays.
- 39:13Speaker 1: He's pitching. I mean he pitched like he pitched like
- 39:16Speaker 1: a five this year. He's off for five season. There's
- 39:20Speaker 1: a thirty five star.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Starter he's getting for what he's done. He's getting four years.
- 39:25Speaker 3: He's getting four years in about eighteen a year now.
- 39:29Speaker 3: That would put him that would put him rate at
- 39:31Speaker 3: the qualifying offer. You know, if you don't get more
- 39:34Speaker 3: than fifty sixty million, then teams are like you know,
- 39:38Speaker 3: like the Paveta issue that Paveta had. You know, teams
- 39:41Speaker 3: are leery with a qualifying offer, but through this dude
- 39:45Speaker 3: shows up and shows out his era plus, his era plus.
- 39:51Speaker 3: The last five years has been one twenty five now
- 39:55Speaker 3: I'm sorry, one twenty two, one seventeen, one fourteen, and
- 39:59Speaker 3: this year would have been a platform year one oh two.
- 40:02Speaker 3: He's still going to pitch for you at the age
- 40:04Speaker 3: thirty two season. I do think that until this came out,
- 40:08Speaker 3: I do think he would have received a qualifying offer
- 40:11Speaker 3: from a team.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Okay, so Jose Burrios to the Astros and the Blue
- 40:15Speaker 1: Jays eat about half of the contract. The Astros are
- 40:19Speaker 1: not going to bid for a big money starter. We
- 40:22Speaker 1: saw a report yesterday from Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal
- 40:25Speaker 1: that they're interested in Shane Boz, who costs like a
- 40:27Speaker 1: few million bucks. But it's not necessarily going to be
- 40:29Speaker 1: easy to pluck him away. This is someone who I
- 40:32Speaker 1: think the Blue Jays desperately would like to move. They
- 40:35Speaker 1: need to make up starts innings. Franbervaldez filled it up
- 40:40Speaker 1: for them in the rotation. The only guy that's coming
- 40:42Speaker 1: back for them that went like one hundred, whatever, thirty
- 40:45Speaker 1: or forty, there's a number in there. The only guy
- 40:47Speaker 1: that really put real innings together this past season for
- 40:50Speaker 1: them that's coming back is Hunter Brown. What are you
- 40:52Speaker 1: doing with the rest?
- 40:54Speaker 4: I'm trying to find someone else to fill their rotation.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Thanks a good fit.
- 40:57Speaker 4: Okay, I ain't met at that one.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Okay, let's move to Don Mattingly. Our reporter in Pennsylvania
- 41:07Speaker 1: right now, Eric Kratz has more on what seems like
- 41:10Speaker 1: an obvious fit. Kratz Don Mattingley the new bench coach
- 41:13Speaker 1: for the Phillies. I know it's not official yet, but
- 41:15Speaker 1: it sounds like it's gonna happen. Todd's a LeKi Our
- 41:18Speaker 1: Philly Show guy said that they have mutual interest, and
- 41:23Speaker 1: it sounds like a matter of when not if.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Well, I mean, this is it. You figured out what
- 41:30Speaker 3: they couldn't do in the playoffs. Don Mattingly, Phillies World
- 41:33Speaker 3: Series champion. Lock it in, love it, No, this is great.
- 41:37Speaker 3: I mean, Shoot Topper was with the I think Topper
- 41:40Speaker 3: was with the Yankees when Donnie Baseball was still playing.
- 41:43Speaker 3: I'd have to look back at when Topper first started
- 41:45Speaker 3: with the Yankees organization, but he might have been there
- 41:49Speaker 3: when Donnie Baseball was playing. But yeah, I mean he's
- 41:54Speaker 3: he's clearly when you have two managers on the bench,
- 41:59Speaker 3: I don't don't think. I don't. I don't see how
- 42:01Speaker 3: it couldn't. I don't see how it couldn't work out.
- 42:04Speaker 3: I mean, nothing was to me in a World Series.
- 42:06Speaker 3: It's always heartbreaking to see the team lose. But when
- 42:10Speaker 3: you start seeing like pictures of Boba Schett, like coming
- 42:14Speaker 3: up to Don Mattingly and holding his up, putting his
- 42:18Speaker 3: arm around him, you know, you know how much it is,
- 42:21Speaker 3: how much how much he's coached, played all that stuff
- 42:24Speaker 3: and still not won a World Series. He got there finally,
- 42:28Speaker 3: but he hasn't won one. So now this is this
- 42:30Speaker 3: is the chance, This is it. Donnie Baseball brings the
- 42:32Speaker 3: Phillies to the World Series.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Boom, there you go.
