- 1:19Welcome to the Mac and Jack show.
- 1:21I'm Sonya sitting in with my nice great Co host here, Jack
- 1:25Hersh. Jack, good morning.
- 1:26How are you? You're muted.
- 1:30That's how you are. Good morning, Sonia.
- 1:33It's early. That's why I'm muted.
- 1:35Maybe I'm tired. Maybe I'm not muted?
- 1:37Got to have your coffee, Jack. Got to have your coffee so
- 1:40early. Thank you so much everybody for
- 1:42joining us this morning. Good morning.
- 1:44And make sure you guys download the Roku app as stated in the
- 1:47commercial so you 2 could be in the know when we are live 24/7
- 1:52sports without a cost of cable. That's my slogan.
- 1:54I really should coin that, Jack. I've been saying that so long.
- 1:58I think I'm the only person that says that.
- 2:00Speaking of, the only person we had that the NBA Finals are
- 2:05still ongoing. Of course, they've been slated
- 2:08to commence the original, the official finals June 3rd, 2025
- 2:13and we are wrapping up this series.
- 2:15Of course, last night's games just just a shock.
- 2:19Honestly Jack, I just that Pacers game.
- 2:23That was the latter game of the evening.
- 2:25Pacers end up losing 129 and 10. Excuse me, winning 1/29 and
- 2:311/01/09. When I last looked, Jack, it was
- 2:36already close to a 30 point deficit and that wasn't even at
- 2:39the half. Tonya, I keep looking at the box
- 2:43score over and over and over, thinking I missed something, I
- 2:48misread something. I'm taking a look.
- 2:50Jared Allen one shot the whole game.
- 2:52What's he been doing hanging out with Ben Simmons?
- 2:55I mean, one shot the whole game. Jared Allen a great rebound that
- 2:59two rebounds the whole game. You know, Donovan Mitchell had a
- 3:03bad game. You know, shot 3 for 1112
- 3:06points. It was inevitable because
- 3:08Donovan Mitchell had been carrying the cabs.
- 3:10It was a one man show in large part the whole series for the
- 3:15Cleveland Cavaliers, even though he couldn't quite will them to a
- 3:19victory in games one and two at Cleveland.
- 3:23And it was inevitable he would take a step back.
- 3:26It happened to anyone for one game.
- 3:28But when the Cavaliers won game three, you know, with
- 3:31Indianapolis, you think, OK, they're ready to start rolling.
- 3:35They're ready to start themselves, show themselves to
- 3:38be the 64 win team that they were and they just never got
- 3:43off. I mean, they kind of lost their
- 3:45cool. You know, fights nearly were
- 3:47taking place in the beginning of the game.
- 3:49They got off the bat started like they never woke up.
- 3:53They never woke up. You, you you think they would
- 3:55wake up and take a little bit of a run during the game, but they
- 3:59never took a run at the Indiana Pacers during the game.
- 4:02And I want to hear Rick Carlisle say, well, we haven't won a
- 4:05thing yet. You won three games.
- 4:08Yeah, up three, one. Don't give me that nice talk.
- 4:13You know that You haven't done a thing yet.
- 4:15You've done an awful lot and I won.
- 4:18I wonder when the the Cavaliers won Game 3, was their mindset,
- 4:23OK, we're going back to Cleveland for Game 5, so maybe
- 4:29there wasn't an urgency in game four.
- 4:32There certainly has to be an urgency if there's a Game 6.
- 4:35But obviously yet got to win Game five at home first, which
- 4:39I'm sure the Cavaliers are confident that they're going to
- 4:42do. But I I just couldn't figure out
- 4:46last games last night for the life of me, Sonia, that the
- 4:50Cleveland Cavaliers just never showed up and Kenny Atkinson
- 4:55coach team you expect more from than that.
- 4:59I mean, this thing could be over Jack with one more win by the
- 5:03Pacers. It's a wrap.
- 5:04Like they, they literally have allowed the the Cavalier, excuse
- 5:10me, they have allowed the Pacers to take the lead.
- 5:13And you know, we talked about a couple of episodes ago how stats
- 5:17line up about teams that are three in one down.
- 5:20It's very few teams that it has been done, but it's like a 93%
- 5:26chance that the three one, the the leader of that series goes
- 5:30on to win. And so it's going to be
- 5:32interesting to see what happens here because I honestly do not
- 5:37think that they still have the momentum needed to come back.
- 5:43No, they did. Cavaliers certainly don't have
- 5:45any momentum at all. You know, momentum's only as
- 5:48good as your last game. I don't want to.
- 5:50I keep hearing it on this show from our other Co hosts, so on
- 5:54and the other show. Don't Momentum, momentum,
- 5:56momentum. The Cavaliers had the momentum
- 5:59going into game four. They beat the Pacers
- 6:02resoundingly on their homecourt in game three.
- 6:05Don't tell me about my them. The Knicks swept 2.
- 6:07Nothing against the Celtics going back to Madison Square
- 6:10Garden. They're the ones who supposedly
- 6:13had the momentum. They got routed in game three.
- 6:16Now say that the Celtics have the momentum.
- 6:19Come on, momentum's as good as your last game.
- 6:22You know, if I'm the Knicks, if I'm the Knicks players, I'm
- 6:26thinking about what an opportunity this can be.
- 6:29If they can get by the Celtics, they can beat the Pacers.
- 6:34Remember the movie The Karate Kid with a Sensei wanted them to
- 6:38foul, but he said, but sensei, I can beat this guy and it's next.
- 6:42You're looking at the paces, even though you lost in them in
- 6:45seven games in the playoffs last year.
- 6:48If you're the Knicks, you're thinking we're a better team
- 6:51than the Pacers. They beat the Cavaliers.
- 6:54We can beat these guys. The Pacers.
- 6:56We should beat these guys. We wouldn't be underdogs to them
- 7:00like we would be against the Cavaliers, even though the
- 7:02Knicks would probably have a level of confidence that they
- 7:05could be Cleveland as well. There's a difference involved
- 7:09between thinking you can beat A-Team but thinking you should
- 7:13be the team. Very beatable, you know, for the
- 7:18Knicks, but they have to get by the Celtics.
- 7:21They play the Celtics today. And even if the Knicks win today
- 7:24and go up three one, it's a big mountain to climb.
- 7:28You get the feeling the Knicks up to one against the Celtics,
- 7:32but you get the feeling that they're the ones who are coming
- 7:36have to come from behind in a certain sense.
- 7:40I mean, you talk about that game with the with the Knicks and
- 7:42we'll go back to the Western Conference in a minute.
- 7:45But that Knicks Celtics game is the the demand for those
- 7:49tickets, Jack. I mean, those northeasterners,
- 7:52all you guys from the northeast up there are really coming out
- 7:55to support this. The average ticket price wow for
- 7:59resale was $2000 as these games have approached and they it's
- 8:05getting even higher now. This game, this game matchup is
- 8:09definitely one for the records. I'm excited for it as a non
- 8:13Celtics, non Knicks fan, of course I'm partial to Jason
- 8:16Tatum like I've always talked about.
- 8:18But even that game there that that series is so I, I never
- 8:23thought the Knicks would come in and jump up as they did.
- 8:27The Celtics have really got to rally all the way out.
- 8:29They've got to finish this entire series.
- 8:30They cannot allow the Knicks to come back, not even another
- 8:32game. I, I got to point out, the
- 8:35Knicks have always been a hot ticket, always an expensive
- 8:38ticket. And you could compare it to
- 8:41Broadway Place. I'll give you an example.
- 8:44So it's one night I decided I was going to take my son in laws
- 8:47to an NBA game and there were two games being played that
- 8:51night. The Brooklyn Nets were hosting
- 8:54the Charlotte Hornets in one game and the Knicks were hosting
- 8:57the Detroit Pistons in the other game.
- 9:00This was last year when the Pistons weren't good.
- 9:02Keep that in mind. And I'm looking at the ticket
- 9:05prices. The Knicks tickets were three
- 9:08times the amount of the net tickets.
- 9:10We wound up going to the net game OK rather than pay three
- 9:14times the amount to get into the Knicks and Pistons.
- 9:17That's just what it is with the Knicks.
- 9:19The Knicks have had one of the most loyal fan bases in sports,
- 9:25but it's you know it's time for the Knicks to take the next
- 9:29step. I don't want to see this
- 9:32scenario play out. The Knicks losing 7 games to the
- 9:36Celtics and we hear how wonderful the Knicks were that
- 9:39no one expected them to take it. The seven games when you're up
- 9:43to nothing, you're expected to win the series at that point.
- 9:47And at some point, every team has to take the next step.
- 9:53They have to do it. And the time is now for the
- 9:57next. Tonight's the time for the next.
- 9:59Now. You win tonight, you go up three
- 10:01one, you have three games left to win one.
- 10:06The math is very simple. Yeah, very simple.
- 10:10Good morning to Richard and good morning to little Holmes.
- 10:12Little Holmes say good morning to you, Jack, I guess.
- 10:14That's what Little Holmes? Yeah.
- 10:16I hope I see it tonight on the boxing show.
- 10:18Little Holmes must be a big fan of Larry Holmes.
- 10:23That's what I heard, you know. You know, it's been a little bit
- 10:26scrutinized lately in the last few days to trade the Knicks
- 10:32made with the Timberwolves trading Julius Randall to
- 10:35Minnesota and Minnesota was really put down for making that
- 10:39trade trading call Anthony Towns to get, you know, they got dumb
- 10:43deep and Senzo along with Julius Randall, the Randall was the
- 10:47main guy and Randall's been great for the Minnesota
- 10:51Timberwolves. And I'm happy for the Knicks
- 10:54that they made the deal 'cause they're just as good, if not
- 10:59better off with Karl Anthony Towns.
- 11:01I know Julius Randall was a heck of a player, but they were only
- 11:04going to go so far teaming Randall with Brunson.
- 11:08And the style of game that Brunson plays, he has to be in
- 11:13control. He has to be the man.
- 11:14He has to run the offense fully. And with Randall there, even
- 11:19though Randall wasn't a selfish play, in my view, it the fifth
- 11:24wasn't quite as good as Brunson and Karl Anthony Towns, you
- 11:28know, having Brunson with Randall, but Randall is good as
- 11:33a great supporter to, you know, Anthony Edwards.
- 11:37Plus Randall can take over and be the guy on the given game if
- 11:41Anthony Edwards is having an off game as Randall is shown.
- 11:44You know, in the series with Golden State.
- 11:48Yeah, I mean, he Randall has a very strong performance for the
- 11:52T Wolves. He's been really outstanding.
- 11:54Like as of late their game on Saturday, he had like 24 points,
- 11:5912 assists and 10 rebounds. And those were very crucial
- 12:02stats because he was able to lead them to that V102 to 97 and
- 12:08basically break the tiebreaker to give them the two one series
- 12:12break that they needed, Jack. And so this was their
- 12:15Minnesota's first playoff triple double since Kevin Garnett.
- 12:19So basically, you know, Randall has come in and made a name for
- 12:24himself there. There's even been discussion and
- 12:26some apologies from some analysts who actually
- 12:30underestimated his impact when he came to the team, especially
- 12:34because of his less successful playoff performance when he was
- 12:37with the Knicks. Well, you talk about playoff
- 12:40performances. The Minnesota Timberwolves have
- 12:43never been to an NBA Finals, let alone winning an NBA
- 12:47championship. So they made that deal for Rudy
- 12:50Gobert, which they gave away a historic package of draft picks
- 12:55like never seen before, which other teams can even match for
- 13:00superstars. In other words, Minnesota gave
- 13:04away for Gobert as if he was a superstar.
- 13:08They gave away that type of value.
- 13:11But if they do get to an NBA Finals, you know, making that
- 13:15deal with all the picks for Gobert and trading Karl Anthony
- 13:19Towns, you know, for Julius Randle, it's worth it at the
- 13:23end, Then the deal's been successful.
- 13:26If they get to an NBA Finals. If they never do, then you'd
- 13:31have then the deal backfires. I mean, sometimes deals are cut
- 13:35and dry. We we got to see the results of
- 13:38when we could criticize them in the beginning, like the Luca
- 13:41deal for that they made for Anthony Davis with the Mavs.
- 13:47If the Mavs ever win an NBA championship with Anthony Davis,
- 13:52no one could criticize the deal anymore.
- 13:57Yeah, I, I agree. I agree wholeheartedly.
- 13:59I mean, sometimes we as fans and even analysts especially
- 14:03question these trades. And I'm going to be honest with
- 14:06you, Jack, I, you know, I always say the verdict is still out.
- 14:10I feel like, you know, these players have certain good games,
- 14:14Julius Randall being one of them.
- 14:16And then the next one, you just never know what it looks like.
- 14:20I, I just, I don't know. I think for playoff purposes
- 14:24right now with the T wolves being where they are, I know
- 14:26that they think they've made a great investment, especially
- 14:29with search such a close series. I'm hoping that he could come
- 14:33and clutch for them to remain in the playoffs.
- 14:34However, you know, I'm partial to the warriors and Steph Curry
- 14:38being out this entire week has been substantial to their their
- 14:42playoff contentions right now. I think him being out of this
- 14:46game has been a game changer. Oh absolutely, absolutely.
- 14:51I can't see Golden State winning this series without Steph Curry
- 14:56unless he returns at some point. I know Jimmy Butler in the past
- 15:00has had certain heroics at Miami where he willed them to wins,
- 15:05got them into the finals a couple of times.
- 15:08No, I was talking about deals a moment ago, Sonia.
- 15:12And sometimes the best deals are the deals you don't make if you
- 15:15just leave things alone and let it play.
- 15:18By out a case in point, we're talking about Julius Randle.
- 15:20He was an LA Laker. Can you imagine?
- 15:23The Lakers just rode him out his whole career.
- 15:26Let him be an LA Laker. You know how important he would
- 15:30be to that team now if you paired him with LeBron and Luca?
- 15:35Can you imagine if if Randle would never trade it?
- 15:39They would have been dynamite. They would have been dynamite.
- 15:41I mean, there's been conversation and we'll come back
- 15:44to the Warriors in a second. There's been conversation about
- 15:47LeBron, so much about him being eliminated so early in the
- 15:51contest. And I think that trades make a
- 15:54big difference and bringing Luca into the circle, they really
- 16:00felt like this was their end all be all.
- 16:03And so of course, now Lebron's basically going around saying he
- 16:06had some type of injury. I mean, I've heard rumblings
- 16:09here and there. I mean, these players always
- 16:11come up, I don't want to say with excuses, but you lost fair
- 16:15and square. You lost.
- 16:17If you were playing through an injury, it wasn't significant
- 16:20enough for a doctor to pull you out of the game.
- 16:24Yeah, but in a way, it's a blessing in disguise for LeBron.
- 16:28They've gotten eliminated early because then you have the
- 16:32mentality to Stephen A Smith. Let's say LeBron got his team
- 16:36into the Finals. He played heroically and got his
- 16:40team into the Finals, and they lose in the Finals, let's say,
- 16:44to the Boston Celtics. Let's just pretend for one
- 16:48second Stephen A Smith would hold it against him saying, oh,
- 16:52he's four and seven and finals, You know, now that he didn't get
- 16:56to the finals. They don't use that as a stat,
- 17:00OK, you know that. That's the mentality that
- 17:02bothers me. When someone does something
- 17:05really positive and they take their team as far as they can
- 17:09go, they then use it as a negative static and someone.
- 17:12But with that said, I don't think Lebron's really making
- 17:15excuses as far as Luca goes. To use your phrase, Sonya was a
- 17:19no brainer that the Lakers had to make the deal to get Luca
- 17:24because there's certain players who increase a brand of a
- 17:28franchise. And LA has always been, as we've
- 17:31said in past shows about having mega stars, Elgin Baylor, Jerry
- 17:36West, you know, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul, Jabbar Shack and
- 17:43Kobe, you know, then LeBron join him and now Luke.
- 17:46And Luke is going to be their legacy star in the years ahead.
- 17:52So you you make that deal when you have a legacy player who
- 17:55increases the brand of a franchise.
- 17:58You know, I, I talk this way when I always used to argue with
- 18:00Mac about this a little bit, like when I say, no, Aaron
- 18:05Judge, it wasn't just a normal player.
- 18:09He wasn't a normal player. And and Doctor Paul Semandina,
- 18:13they said, no, Judge doesn't accept this money, Just move on
- 18:16from them. You don't move on from a legacy
- 18:18player. You know, Can you imagine the
- 18:21Yankees at one point in the past and to Mickey Mantle, you don't
- 18:24take off and you're gone. We'll just trade your way.
- 18:27Certain guys belong with teams their whole career because
- 18:32they're associated with their career.
- 18:34You mentioned Steph Curry a little while, a while ago.
- 18:36He's associated with a warrior. He's a legacy player.
- 18:41When the Warriors look back Golden State on their history,
- 18:44who's going to be their most important player?
- 18:47Who are they going to be associated with the most in
- 18:50Golden State franchise history? It's going to be Steph Curry.
- 18:55You don't move on from guys like that unless they force you to.
- 19:01I am excited, you know, with him, you know, we talk about the
- 19:04Draymond Green drama. I mean, it kind of Draymond
- 19:08drama. It actually makes sense now.
- 19:10That's going to be my new slogan.
- 19:12I mean, Steph has been able to stay grounded despite all of the
- 19:16drama that has continued to surround Draymond Green.
- 19:20But but, you know, they said they treat Draymond like a pit
- 19:24bull. You know, he's like that bad dog
- 19:26in the neighborhood that when you walk through the
- 19:28neighborhood, you hope that they are restrained because Draymond
- 19:32is lethal. Jack.
- 19:33I mean, how do you stay balanced on the team?
- 19:36And now they're down in this in this series, they're down.
- 19:39Steph is out. Draymond is not really putting
- 19:43up the stats that he should be putting up.
- 19:46You know, Charles Barkley and Draymond Green get along now
- 19:50because Draymond Green did some studio work at TNT and he said
- 19:54Charles Barkley disarm them as soon as he saw Charles Barkley.
- 19:58Barkley greeted them warmly. And the two of them are good
- 20:01now, really good. But Charles Barkley have one of
- 20:04the great lines when him and Draymond Green were going back
- 20:07and forth. You know, with insults.
- 20:10He compared Draymond Green to the drummer in the band.
- 20:14OK, You know, a great fan. He's the drummer, meaning Steph
- 20:17and Klay Thompson and Duran did things and and Draymond was like
- 20:23kind of like just the supporting kind of drummers are very
- 20:26important. They make the concert large
- 20:29part. Don't get me wrong, I have
- 20:31tremendous respect for the drummers, OK, led by the most
- 20:35famous of them at all. I think Ringo's Starr.
- 20:38But it's, you know, but Draymond, I mean, Draymond Green
- 20:43is a heck of a player. It's going to be a Hall of
- 20:45famous someday in all probability.
- 20:47I mean, but he's not the he's not the type of player who's
- 20:52going to carry a team. That's the thing.
- 20:55I mean, Jimmy Butler can carry a team to an extent.
- 20:58Steph Curry could carry them a little more.
- 21:02And are we giving Golden State all this attention based on
- 21:07their reputation the way we did to the Lakers?
- 21:11Are we talking in reality right now, even with Steph Curry?
- 21:16Is it their pedigree? Is that the reason why we're
- 21:19considering them a serious championship contender?
- 21:23I mean, I think they've established themselves, Jack.
- 21:26I kind of feel like once you win a championship, it's just kind
- 21:30of etched in stone, especially in in new era, like they just
- 21:33want a championship within the last decade.
- 21:36So anytime you're talking about a team that, you know, kind of
- 21:40sets that tone and then they've had decent seasons, you know,
- 21:43during the regular season that they appear to be dominant
- 21:47against certain other teams. I feel like those are the teams
- 21:50that it's kind of like they're it's expected.
- 21:53And so for me personally, I really feel like, OK, what is
- 21:57going on with the Warriors? It can.
- 21:58It should not be that Steph is just that big of a a cornerstone
- 22:03for that franchise that nobody else can even come close to
- 22:06keeping that team where they need to be to stay formidable in
- 22:09these series. Well, I mean that that greatest
- 22:12hope is that Jimmy Butler plays like a superstar.
- 22:17But what's ironic is Miami and Pot moved on from Jimmy Butler
- 22:22because they felt his performances had been slipping a
- 22:25little. And, you know, and he'd be in
- 22:27certain rotations with coach Eric Spoelstra over there.
- 22:31Jimmy Butler was starting to become a bit unhappy the way he
- 22:35was used and, and, and the relationship just fell apart.
- 22:40So, I mean, was it a lack of motivation in Miami?
- 22:44Because it it, it's hard sometimes to go all out when you
- 22:48feel your team has no realistic chance of winning an NBA
- 22:52championship. So Jimmy Butler goes to Golden
- 22:54State, he thinks they can win an NBA championship.
- 22:59So he's going to put out a little more.
- 23:01But that's human nature. That doesn't mean he's dogging
- 23:04it. I mean, tonight's game is
- 23:07important, Jack. They play tonight.
- 23:11It's the the, the way everything is looking.
- 23:15We may be looking at AT Wolves positioning that is impossible
- 23:22for the Warriors to even come back.
- 23:25This is a very strong position. We talked about the stats early
- 23:27on coming in. Basically a loss would
- 23:31definitely put them in elimination, like they will be
- 23:35eliminated shortly. Historically, like we talked
- 23:38about in A7 game series, it's a very high probability of winning
- 23:42with three and one. The Timberwolves have been led
- 23:44by Anthony Edwards and Julius Randall.
- 23:47So for them to stay where they are, they both need to basically
- 23:50stay in that leadership role and they basically play on both
- 23:53sides of the ball so that there's no no holes left for the
- 23:57Warriors to sneak through. We've seen a couple of close
- 24:00games that we're like, OK, Steph wasn't there, but they were able
- 24:03to pull it out, what have you. But of course, these games are,
- 24:07if there would be a, you know, game four, of course, and
- 24:11hopefully six and seven, those are.
- 24:14Going to be game five, Well, that is going to be a Game 5.
- 24:17But if Minnesota wins, they drop 31.
- 24:20They're going home but thinking 1.
- 24:23Minnesota historically has been a little bit dysfunctional.
- 24:27You know, I just they'll go on a little bit of a role in the
- 24:32playoffs and you in again, the word momentum.
- 24:35We think they're going to keep it up and and then it falls
- 24:38apart. Look at the way they backtracked
- 24:40against the Dallas Mavs last year and lost that series.
- 24:44And they were actually favored in most circles going into the
- 24:47Western finals against the Mavs. I mean, they played really well
- 24:52in the playoffs. So you just don't know what this
- 24:55Minnesota team. And but then there's The X
- 24:57Factor with Steph Curry. If he does come back, how
- 25:00effective is he going to be? I mean, as long as he can shoot.
- 25:05I mean, they can maybe make some adjustments on defense to help
- 25:09him out and but it's a big game for Golden State, obviously, you
- 25:14know, to fall down 3 to 1 to Minnesota, that's and then go to
- 25:18Minnesota to game five and Minnesota would have a game
- 25:21seven there if Golden State would have survived and won a
- 25:24game five and Game 6. It's a pretty big mountain to
- 25:29climb. Yeah, six and seven would be in
- 25:32San Francisco if they would be. Rick made a good point.
- 25:36I mean it. I guess, Rick, I'll say this.
- 25:38I'm just not a Draymond fan. But he says every team, even the
- 25:41soft cry babies, need a need a Draymond Green to set the tone
- 25:45and protect teammates. But that's the thing, Rick, he
- 25:48did not protect his own teammates at every instance he
- 25:51attacked Jordan Poole. I will never get over that.
- 25:53Even though that was during practice, he still did it.
- 25:56So he didn't protect his teammates.
- 26:00Yeah, You know, the The funny thing is Michael Jordan did take
- 26:04a punch of Steve Kerr and at that been on tape for us to see.
- 26:10You know, it's more dramatic when you see Estonia stuff like
- 26:13that goes on behind the scenes. I mean, look at the case.
- 26:18And it was terrible with Ray Rice.
- 26:20OK, we've heard of other NFL players with domestic abuse, but
- 26:25you saw it with Ray Rice. If you never saw the video and
- 26:30just heard about it, you still be appalled by what happened.
- 26:34But the level of outrage would be, I hate to say it a little
- 26:39less because you didn't have the visual to see.
- 26:43Whenever you have the visual, the level of outrage increases.
- 26:48Yeah, I mean you. This is the day and age we live
- 26:52in. And I always say I'm so glad
- 26:55when I was younger the things weren't documented on film like
- 26:58they are now. Not that I did something to that
- 27:00degree, but just everybody has this mentality, not necessarily
- 27:04to even help somebody, but to just record and document and put
- 27:08it out there for the media, put it out there for the public.
- 27:11And I I was watching a clip this weekend.
- 27:14Jack, it was ACNN correspondent. They were doing a live take and
- 27:19his Co host just collapsed at the at the desk while they were
- 27:23on live and all he did was basically said, you know,
- 27:27somebody will help her. And the news just continued.
- 27:30And then finally for a couple of seconds he had to actually stop
- 27:33because he couldn't get himself together.
- 27:35We have literally lost the human element as far as what's
- 27:39compassionate towards another person because everybody's in
- 27:43such a moment to record and put it in history so everybody can
- 27:49visually look at what's going on.
- 27:51And I think it's the same situation that we have in the
- 27:54league. You know, everybody's got a
- 27:56camera phone at practice. Everybody's got a camera phone
- 28:00in the locker room. Like sometimes it's good because
- 28:03we see positive things. But you know, all it takes is
- 28:07one person that is willing to, you know, get some money from a
- 28:11source, or they may just not care for that person and they
- 28:15can't wait to put something bad out there.
- 28:17Yeah, but I don't want to get off track with sports here.
- 28:21But I, I agree with you in large part.
- 28:23But look, when DeMar Hamilton suffered that episode during the
- 28:27football game, I think everyone was very compassionate.
- 28:31They stopped the game. The players would distraught the
- 28:35people, you know, in Buffalo went home.
- 28:38And I don't think anyone hopefully was complaining.
- 28:41I hopefully they weren't complaining that, oh, that the
- 28:44game's not continuing. You know, I think there's a lot
- 28:49of compassion there. But but but getting back, you
- 28:54know, now I'm getting back with sports here because let's be
- 28:57honest about it, Sony, that's why people are listening to
- 28:59this. This shows they normally don't
- 29:02want to hear about morality and this and morality of that.
- 29:05I mean, but that is an issue in sports with what fans can say,
- 29:10what they're limited to say and what they're not limited.
- 29:15Yeah. So of course today is the the
- 29:17NBA draft lottery schedule in Chicago, IL It's going to take
- 29:22tonight, take place tonight at 7:00.
- 29:24It's going to determine the order in which the the 14 non
- 29:27playoff franchise teams will select their main picks for the
- 29:3125th of June and 26th at the Barclays Center in New York.
- 29:36Not Cooper flag, but his classmate, Duke freshman Isaiah
- 29:40Evans has withdrawn his NBA draft to return to college.
- 29:45Jack. Well, it's only 18 years old.
- 29:50Yeah. So with Cooper.
- 29:52I don't know what, but Cooper Flag is projected to go #1 and
- 29:58#2 and we talk about legacy players.
- 30:03Excuse me, but there's business, a business side of it involved
- 30:06as well. Cooper Flag is a white player.
- 30:10The last time I looked it was white and that enters into the
- 30:13equation. Let's be honest about it.
- 30:16If you're a a potential star type player, there's a fan base
- 30:21and you know fans of cities want the best players they can get.
- 30:26Don't get me wrong, I mean they want the best players.
- 30:30But all factors being equal, if a coup of flag turns into an NBA
- 30:34star, he's going to be incredibly valuable for that
- 30:39franchise. Incredibly.
- 30:42But it depends on the, you know, the city he goes to.
- 30:46How energized is a fan base? If he goes someone like
- 30:50Washington to the Washington Wizards, that's not exactly the
- 30:54most energized fan base. I mean, he'll energize them a
- 30:58little more, but I don't know what that city appreciate him as
- 31:02much as, let's say, Charlotte. Would you tell me the difference
- 31:06would be 1 to the Charlotte, you know, haunted to the Washington
- 31:09Wizards? I think there's a big difference
- 31:12as far as you know how valuable he'd be to the particular city
- 31:17slash franchise. Well, I mean, I, I guess it's
- 31:21kind of like how you brought up morality and people don't really
- 31:23necessarily want to talk about it when they're talking about
- 31:26sports. Everybody doesn't want to always
- 31:28enter the race issue. But Isaiah Evans is African
- 31:31American. He's black.
- 31:33He's these are some of his stats.
- 31:35He's 66, just a little bit shorter than Cooper Cooper's
- 31:38like 6-6 something close, 676 something.
- 31:41He's about the same size, 175. But he was a five star recruit
- 31:45and a McDonald's All American in 2024.
- 31:49In his freshman season, he averaged 6.8 points, 1.1
- 31:53rebounds, and in 13 minutes per game shot 41% from 3 point
- 31:59range, which led all of Duke's rotation players.
- 32:03Jack, he had a strong high school career at North
- 32:06Mecklenburg High School, which is right outside of Charlotte
- 32:08and he's a two time North Carolina Allstate Mr.
- 32:12Basketball. So much to the point that his
- 32:15jersey was retired by the school when he was there.
- 32:18So he's not just some little random kid that was going to go
- 32:21into the draft. Let me see what his projection
- 32:25was to go in, but you know, what are your thoughts on that?
- 32:30Oh my thoughts. So if you're GM, you have to
- 32:33have guts to take the best player at the end because your
- 32:38fan base might want one particular player and they might
- 32:42be outraged if you don't take them.
- 32:44But it might not be the most for many years ago.
- 32:46Steve Alfred is a legend at Indiana play, you know, play for
- 32:51Barbie Knight at Indiana State. Great college player.
- 32:54He was available for the Indiana Pacers to take in the draft.
- 32:59What a fit. You think that would have been
- 33:01Indiana boy, you know, Indiana State legend, you know, a Barbie
- 33:06Knight protege going to the paces.
- 33:10But the GM had the guts, and I'm having a brain fog, you know,
- 33:15popular GM who took them, took Reggie Miller, and then he went
- 33:21into hiding. The GM, he ran out of the
- 33:23building, you know, because of all the threats.
- 33:26And guess what? Reggie Millers turned out to be
- 33:29the most popular Indiana Pace in the team history.
- 33:33Hall of Fame a great player. That was the move to make the
- 33:37take Reggie Miller. Donnie Walsh.
- 33:40Donnie Walsh, Thank you. Donnie Walsh Walsh had the guts
- 33:46to do it. Listen, the same thing happened
- 33:50with Houston. You know the Houston Texans
- 33:53there, they took Mario Williams ahead of Reggie Bush.
- 33:58Everyone thought for sure Reggie Bush was going to be taking
- 34:02Heisman Trophy winner, running back Marquis Clay, a Mr.
- 34:06Popularity the city. Houston couldn't wait with the
- 34:10number one pick to get Reggie Bush.
- 34:12Instead, they take Mario Williams, a tackle, and Reggie
- 34:15Bush goes second to New Orleans. That's what Mario Williams had
- 34:19the better career. Reggie Williams had a good
- 34:22career, but he didn't have a Hall of Fame career.
- 34:24Reggie Bush it was. So the move turned out to be a
- 34:29very unpopular move, but it turned out to be the right move.
- 34:34Yeah. And that's actually interesting
- 34:36you say that because while you were saying, and I was looking
- 34:38to see where they possibly were going to try to take Isaiah
- 34:41Evans and the early projections where he was going to go late in
- 34:46the first round or maybe mid second round.
- 34:49So now that basically, and they were just basing this off his of
- 34:52his shooting abilities, maybe not if he goes back to Duke and
- 34:55gets another season and they'll be keeping an eye out for him to
- 34:58see if he improves, you know, and possibly raise his draft
- 35:02stock to go in for another another draft.
- 35:05Yeah, I, I think playing with Duke another year is real good
- 35:08Look, we keep hearing well, if the player gets hurt, he loses
- 35:12everything look, with the money they can make in college now
- 35:16they can get a a, a nice level of security to start their life.
- 35:22OK, a nice level of security number one number two, how many
- 35:26career ending injuries are there?
- 35:28It it's always possible, it could happen, But let's be
- 35:32honest, think of college, you know, football, college
- 35:37basketball. How many phenoms who stayed in
- 35:41college have gotten injured to the point where they couldn't
- 35:45play in the NFLNBAI can't think of 11 instance.
- 35:50I mean, I can get hurt. Their stock can go down with an
- 35:54injury, Absolutely. And it's happened.
- 35:57Stock has gone down, but they can still get a still go to the
- 36:02NFLNBA and and, and make millions of dollars and have
- 36:07security. Maybe they won't do as well as
- 36:09they could do otherwise. That's what we hear by Cooper
- 36:12Flag are the declare for the NBA draft.
- 36:15Just in case you get hurt. He can make up by $12 million in
- 36:21college or whatever. You know, he could.
- 36:24If he wanted to go back to Duke for another year, he could have
- 36:27done it. Yeah, definitely so.
- 36:29And you bring up a good point, Jack.
- 36:31I don't know who started the the terms of oh, it could be a
- 36:36season in a career. I don't know who put.
- 36:39It, Keith angles the one who's always running scared.
- 36:43Oh, no, You've got to come out now, just in case you get hurt.
- 36:47Just be scared of everything, you know?
- 36:50Come on. I think I didn't know I was like
- 36:53somebody, you know, but but it is a chance, but it's not like
- 36:56off and it's kind of like one of these steps like how what are
- 36:59the odds? You know, we talk about odds a
- 37:01lot. What are the odds that this
- 37:03would happen? But then on the on the flip side
- 37:05of that, Jack, you don't want to be on the side that the odd is
- 37:08against you, that you are the one that you took a gamble
- 37:11because it's still that small percentage.
- 37:13But you know, life was the gamble you brought up as.
- 37:16Long as you can play, as long as you can rehab and play at some
- 37:21point. You think of Cooper Flag for
- 37:23example, you know stuff with a terrible injury and had to miss
- 37:30the full year. He didn't play next year, had a
- 37:33terrible injury. You mean to tell me your team
- 37:35wouldn't draft him in the first round still?
- 37:37He wouldn't go first overall, I agree with that.
- 37:41But he would still get drafted and make an NBA rost at some
- 37:45point. Let me give you an NFL example
- 37:49of that, and I it's with my own team.
- 37:52It it's regarding Jonathan Brooks.
- 37:55Jonathan Brooks, who was drafted by the Panthers last season,
- 38:00well in 21 through 23, was a standout with the Texas
- 38:03Longhorns. In his final season.
- 38:06He got all these accolades. That same season he had a torn
- 38:09ACL which cut his college season short.
- 38:13When the draft kicked off, he was one of the top running back
- 38:18prospects in the 24 draft. The Panthers drafted him in the
- 38:24second round, 46th overall, and he was the first running back,
- 38:28Jack that was picked up in the whole draft.
- 38:31So he was the top running back and was the top draft pick for
- 38:34last year. When he came in, he was already
- 38:38injured and was unable to play for the Panthers.
- 38:41He could not start. He could not even take the
- 38:43field. OK, they brought him back.
- 38:45The team doctors for the Panthers at the time cleared him
- 38:49to play. And then in Week 12 against the
- 38:53Chiefs, he got hurt again after recovering from his ACL tear.
- 38:58Excuse me? He played.
- 39:00He couldn't play until week. Where was what I'm saying?
- 39:02My bad. He played the Chiefs after
- 39:04recovering from that initial ACL tear that he had in college.
- 39:09Jack, we're talking about a whole year of recovery for the
- 39:11ACL. Then two weeks later, he's
- 39:15playing the Philadelphia Eagles. He gets another ACL tear in the
- 39:21same knee due to a non contact play and had to have surgery in
- 39:26January. Now they've just announced that
- 39:29he's going to miss this entire season.
- 39:32He only took a few pieces while they tried to get him to recover
- 39:37because he came in with this almost season ending injury.
- 39:43And because of that, he's now limited in his ability to play.
- 39:48And so the fact that he is now limited is exactly what I'm
- 39:52talking about. He came, he was in college, he
- 39:54got injured in college. He was already having a a
- 39:57powerhouse year. Had he not done that last
- 40:00season, he would not have been injured.
- 40:03He would have come in the draft probably healthy.
- 40:06And we're talking about a different Jonathan Brooks.
- 40:07Now we're talking about another second full season of him after
- 40:10being drafted that he's unable to to play.
- 40:17A mutual mic. Jack, I'm sorry.
- 40:19These things happen, but when all is said and done, let's say
- 40:24Jonathan Brooks keeps trying to rehab and it doesn't quite work
- 40:29out and he has to retire OK at some point.
- 40:33And he played two games. But he would still have made a
- 40:38few $1,000,000. That's the point I'm trying to
- 40:41make. It's not like he's going to be
- 40:45looking for a job and he's going to have no money to pay the
- 40:49rent. He's going to be fine in
- 40:51starting on this new segment in life, OK, It's after football
- 40:56life. He's going to be given much more
- 40:59of a head start than the vast majority of other people are,
- 41:03you know, who are looking for their first real job, more or
- 41:08less. That's what I'm trying to say.
- 41:10It's it, But that's an extreme case.
- 41:14And even then, he's going to have some semblance of financial
- 41:18security and in the worst case scenario.
- 41:22Jack, let me break down his contract for you.
- 41:25He had a signing bonus of 2,000,941 dollars, $2,941,000
- 41:33five. 100 well it's 3 million to make it easier his.
- 41:35Total guaranteed is only $4 million.
- 41:41Good gosh, Sonia. Only $4 million.
- 41:44That's his guarantee that he's going for his first job.
- 41:48Whatever. I don't know what he what fields
- 41:51he would like to have, hypothetically, but let's say he
- 41:54decided to become an accountant, a teacher.
- 41:58Yeah, hopefully at all. Maybe go back to school to
- 42:01finish college if he hasn't. OK, he'll be fine.
- 42:06You know, you put most of the money in the bank, you get try
- 42:10to live off the interest for the most part.
- 42:12Not that interest is that high, but it's high enough.
- 42:16If you could put 3 million in the bank at 3%, that's $90,000 a
- 42:21year. So you live a little
- 42:23conservatively, you get your degree, I mean, and that's the
- 42:27worst case scenario. Well, his, according to what I'm
- 42:32reading here and let me grab Rick's comment, real.
- 42:34Quick then he can go well what is Rick talking about that he's
- 42:38called back his guys credit? Oh, Rick, come on.
- 42:42But I mean. You don't know what interest he
- 42:45has, Rick. I mean, maybe he has none.
- 42:47I mean, maybe it is basket weeping, but maybe he wants to
- 42:51be, you know, an architect I have.
- 42:53Not heard a basket. Like I said.
- 42:56I've. Heard it.
- 42:58I I don't know. I haven't heard of basket
- 43:01weaving since I was a kid. I don't know a great
- 43:03grandmother. Oh, OK.
- 43:05So this is the thing though, Jack.
- 43:06So I said 4 million, but basically this year he only had
- 43:11$795,000. And so, I mean, it doesn't sound
- 43:15like a lot, but I personally just know.
- 43:18Sounds like a lot. Sounds like a lot to me. 7 I
- 43:22mean, I'm not. Not from an athlete's
- 43:24perspective. Not from an athlete's
- 43:26perspective. Yeah, OK.
- 43:28So his cash payout for this year that he's getting ready to miss
- 43:32is 1,177,000 dollars, 595 S he's still getting $1,000,000.
- 43:39He's he's signed they guaranteed and that's my question.
- 43:43So if he's injured or is he still getting paid because he's
- 43:46signed through 2027? Yeah, they have to pay him.
- 43:50Oh my goodness. Well, the cap hit.
- 43:52The cap hit alone for this year is 1,000,000.
- 43:55Rookie deal that he gets a certain amount.
- 43:58They have to be. They have to pay him.
- 44:01Wow. Well, they've they've got, he's
- 44:02hitting the cap hit on every one of them.
- 44:05This, this season alone, he's going to be hitting close to the
- 44:08$2,000,000 cap hit with the Panthers because he's not
- 44:11playing. So I, I had to talk about that,
- 44:14'cause we talked about season ending injuries.
- 44:16Let's talk about another thing, Jack, because I know that we
- 44:19were on yesterday's show, the big football show, the big
- 44:22sports show on Sunday. But I I do want to, you know,
- 44:26get your thoughts here. I know you can't wait to go in
- 44:28on the New Orleans Saints, but Derek Carr and his labrum
- 44:32injury. How, how convenient is this that
- 44:35this is coming out now that no one's mentioned this labrum
- 44:38injury on his throwing arm nonetheless.
- 44:40And now, of course, he's retiring from the league.
- 44:43He doesn't want, you know, play. Period.
- 44:45Look, it's Derek Carr's right to retire.
- 44:48He shouldn't play unless he wants to.
- 44:50Rehab is a very difficult thing. He would have to endure a
- 44:56rigorous 6 month process, you know, to rehab to get back to
- 45:01fully normal if he could get back to fully normal all
- 45:05together. And players are different.
- 45:08It depends how bad they want to come back.
- 45:12They can hang it up and and no one should really criticize him.
- 45:16Look at Alex Smith. He had the most gruesome leg
- 45:20injuries yet he did all that rehab to come back.
- 45:24And you wonder how wise it was to come back.
- 45:27Look, Aaron Rodgers after the Achilles, he could have retired,
- 45:32but you know he wanted to come back.
- 45:35It depends on the players. Some guys, you know, they don't
- 45:39want to retire no matter what. They want to keep coming back.
- 45:42But rehab is the most loneliest things to do and to and to pay
- 45:47that price and rehab, he just didn't want to Derek cost.
- 45:51So, you know, let him have a happy retirement.
- 45:55What's his legacy going to be? I don't think it's going to be
- 45:58that great of a legacy. He didn't really do anything
- 46:01with the Saints and and with the Raiders.
- 46:05At most, you could say he was perhaps OK At most, I mean, I
- 46:10wouldn't go that far. I think he was quite average
- 46:13with the Raiders. They never won a playoff game
- 46:16with him as the quarterback he'd have.
- 46:18He put up some good statistics from time to time and they did
- 46:23have one good, really good year with him as the start, I think
- 46:27when they went 12 and 4. But All in all, he wasn't the
- 46:30answer. You know, he, when he went to
- 46:34New Orleans, I didn't expect anything more than he produced
- 46:38and he didn't produce anything more and he was a free agent.
- 46:43I was hoping he wouldn't go, you know, The Jets, me being a Jets
- 46:46fan. And when he didn't, there was a
- 46:48level of relief. Derek Card to me was always too
- 46:51good to be a backup. He was better than your backups
- 46:55in the league, OK, because he wasn't a bad quarterback.
- 46:59He could start. You could win with him to a
- 47:03point, but that was the thing. You don't want a quarterback who
- 47:07you could win with to a point. You want someone who can carry
- 47:11you through the whole way to the season, you know, hopefully to
- 47:14the Super Bowl. You just never seen that type of
- 47:18guy. And now with New Orleans, where
- 47:20do they have Tyler slap? Is that how you say something?
- 47:24You don't even know how to say his name.
- 47:27We were all doing it on the show yesterday.
- 47:30Everyone. I can't even pronounce his name.
- 47:34Louisville, the 26. You know, Louisville who's
- 47:36injured, you know, it seems on and off.
- 47:41Yeah. And.
- 47:42And then you get Spencer Rattler, who got the.
- 47:45Playground, hold on. They sold on Spencer Rattler.
- 47:48They're sold on him. Let let me let me say.
- 47:50They're sold on him. They wouldn't have used the 40th
- 47:53they train loves. Him they train loves him, he
- 47:58said. You know, and and we saw Spencer
- 48:00Rattler, Jack, I don't know if you watch New Orleans games last
- 48:03season, we saw a couple of, you know, debuts of Spencer Rattler.
- 48:06I was impressed for what for what New Orleans was working
- 48:09with Spencer Rattler had concise pipe pass.
- 48:13Excuse me because that concise can't get it out concise passes.
- 48:17He seemed to have the control of of that offense.
- 48:21He didn't seem to have, you know, he seemed to be balanced
- 48:24is what I'm saying. He wasn't all over the place.
- 48:27He was very level headed. He seemed like his passes were
- 48:30calculated everything. I mean, I don't know if I don't
- 48:34want to say he's their franchise quarterback, but he's definitely
- 48:38a gap filler for where they are now.
- 48:40But like you said, they drafted show.
- 48:43But I'm going to be honest with you, Jack, two things #1 Derek
- 48:47Carr having a labrum tear. I, I think I told you, I know a
- 48:51few people know I've had a labrum tear.
- 48:54I had surgery five years ago this year.
- 48:57To this day, if it gets cold outside and I went through rehab
- 49:01for nine months and I don't even do professional throwing, but it
- 49:05was my right arm. It was the dominant arm.
- 49:08And some days I wish I'd never had the the repair surgery at
- 49:11all because the repair surgery, I'm supposed to go for cortisone
- 49:14shots every 18 months or whatever because the pain,
- 49:18sometimes I could barely lift my arm to get a shirt on.
- 49:20And so that's that. Recovery for a regular person is
- 49:24rough, let alone for an athlete. And that's their throwing arm.
- 49:28Derek Carr played eleven season in the NFL. 169 games had 41,245
- 49:37passing yards. 257 of those were touchdowns.
- 49:41Almost half of them were interceptions.
- 49:43With 112 he had a completed rate percentage of 65%.
- 49:48Passer rating was pretty good. 92.8% rushing yards 9956, 7
- 49:54rushing touchdowns. On his own he was in the Pro
- 49:56Bowl 4 * 2015 through 17 and 2022.
- 50:01His best days were as an Oakland Raider, just like you said.
- 50:05When he got in New Orleans in 2023 he had 375 completions and
- 50:11then in the last season it went down significantly.
- 50:14Jack only 189. So it was it was that was the
- 50:19worst season he had. Maybe he was injured.
- 50:22I mean, clearly he was if he's saying it now.
- 50:24But he has several franchise records with the Raiders,
- 50:27including the career passing yards and touchdowns.
- 50:31It's just by the time he gets to New Orleans, you're you're
- 50:34right. He's not a good he's better.
- 50:36He's that in between quarterback.
- 50:38He's like, I like to call them kind of like the Flacco's, like
- 50:42you could float somebody if they got a, you know.
- 50:44But Joe Flacco, they won the Super Bowl and it with him as
- 50:47quarterback of the Ravens, Flacco was a legitimate starting
- 50:52NFL quarterback. Well, I'm.
- 50:54Saying now that he's pulled back in like that's.
- 50:57Why they now Flacco's somewhat in the backup, I mean now and
- 51:01Derek Carr, listen, I mean, if you're going to compare him to a
- 51:06Tyrod Taylor, you could say, yeah, he was marginally better
- 51:10than the Tyrod Taylor type. Yeah, I someone's got to put up
- 51:15numbers. I mean, quarterbacks could put
- 51:17up numbers that look impressive at times.
- 51:20And look, Derek, I had a career he could be proud of.
- 51:23He was in the league double digit years.
- 51:25The Raiders had, you know, some regular season success with
- 51:31Derek Carr. You know, he just wasn't the guy
- 51:34who I would want as my franchise quarterback.
- 51:37I mean, you know, he and you know, enough with Derek Carr as
- 51:42far as that, 'cause you know, nothing.
- 51:45I, it seems like I've been a big Derek Carr critic over the years
- 51:48and I haven't meant to be 1. He's not a bad quarterback by
- 51:51any means, OK? I just wouldn't warn him.
- 51:55It's like I said a moment ago to my franchise quarterback, but
- 51:59with Spencer Rappler. Spencer Rappler's problem is
- 52:03he's playing in the modern day NFL.
- 52:05Spencer Rappler needs time to develop.
- 52:08He could be potentially a good quarterback of quality starting
- 52:12in that NFL quarterback, but in this day and age, teams don't
- 52:16have the time to put into a quarterback to develop them
- 52:20unless it's a blue chip prospect.
- 52:23The Bears could be patient with the Caleb Williams because he's
- 52:27a number one overall draft choice.
- 52:29Spencer Rapper was a fifth round draft choice and when your fifth
- 52:34round draft choice, teams aren't going to have patience to
- 52:37develop you. That's what I was going to bring
- 52:45up next. I mean, his Spencer Rattlers
- 52:48stats. I mean, he played seven games
- 52:51and he started in six of those games for the things he
- 52:55completed 130 of 228 passes, so 57%, just a little half over
- 53:011300 yards and four touchdowns, though Jack with five
- 53:05interceptions. I mean, he's starting out kind
- 53:07of rough, but. He's on a bad team.
- 53:08The Saints are bad team. I mean, let's be honest about
- 53:12it. I mean, but if they had
- 53:14confidence in Spencer Rattler, they would not have taken a
- 53:19quarterback in the second round, 40th over Royal.
- 53:23They would not have done it. I could understand they took a
- 53:26quarterback late on in the fourth or fifth round, but when
- 53:30you take another quarterback in the second round, it sends a
- 53:33message. The only time I saw something
- 53:36like that happened and it didn't send a message.
- 53:38Well, a couple of times it happened with the Packers taking
- 53:41Jordan Love with the Eagles when they had Aaron Rodgers with the
- 53:46Eagles, taking Jalen Hurts when Carson Wentz was playing bad.
- 53:50You know, I, I want to, not to change the topic completely, but
- 53:53we've milked out Spencer Rattler.
- 53:55Basically, Sonya, you should be ashamed of yourself with the
- 53:59difficulty you caused. You were going off on the
- 54:02Colorado Rockies the other day, how terrible they were.
- 54:07You wouldn't let up. And now they fired their
- 54:09manager. It's as if they're listening.
- 54:12To Bud Black got fired. 90. Days and there after you're
- 54:17after you're outburst the Colorado Rockies fired but black
- 54:22you were claiming that they basically to paraphrase you were
- 54:27saying they were the biggest disgrace in all the sports
- 54:30losing what 21 nothing. In a baseball game. 21 zero in a
- 54:38baseball game is huge. And yes they fired Bud Black on
- 54:41son Oh Mother's Day. I feel so bad for him.
- 54:44Yeah. You know, he was 7 and 33, Jack.
- 54:47He was 7 and 33. That wasn't just that one game
- 54:51that resulted in terrible. And if they said it's the worst
- 54:54in MLB history, Jack. So I'm not the only person that
- 54:57sees that. I'm not blaming but Black for
- 55:01them being so bad. They obviously have a bad
- 55:03roster, but managing a baseball team, I don't want to say it's
- 55:08overrated because managers could make a difference.
- 55:11It depends how you handle players.
- 55:15But this isn't like like coaching basketball.
- 55:18You put me on an NBA bench now, even though I'll know the
- 55:22players, I'm not going to know rotations.
- 55:25I'm not going to know the intimate details of coaching.
- 55:28Even though I've coached on the high school level.
- 55:31I would be way over my head in the NFL, in the NBA, if I had to
- 55:35coach. You put me on an NFL sideline
- 55:39and have me coach a game. I would be completely clueless
- 55:44where to put players where they should line up, when changes
- 55:48should be made. You know, as a completely
- 55:50clueless, that's compared to the NFL coaches I just got basically
- 55:55have a strong fans knowledge. Would you put me on the bench as
- 55:58a Major League manager? Yeah, I would rely on my bullpen
- 56:03coaches for certain switches and this and that, don't get me
- 56:08wrong, But all you have to do is pencil in a lineup and you could
- 56:11win that given game. You might not even know what
- 56:15you're doing, but just right in the line up in your team could
- 56:19win conceivably. But it's a managing, it's
- 56:22important to extend and extend how you handle players, certain
- 56:27moves you make. But when you have a team as bad
- 56:30as Colorado Rockies, I don't care who's managing you, you
- 56:34know, or any moves you make it, it's going to be painful.
- 56:38Jack, they gave him nine seasons to get that team together.
- 56:42Nine seasons, nine years. They were long-suffering with
- 56:45him. He was the 7th manager in the
- 56:48franchise history of the team. So they're very long-suffering
- 56:51with all their managers because you know, they give everybody
- 56:55their own rope. He managed the team from 2017
- 56:59until yesterday, Sunday. He had 544 wins and 690 losses.
- 57:06Jack like significantly more losses than wins, but for them
- 57:12he was. This is what's crazy.
- 57:14He was the winningest manager in their his franchise history of
- 57:19both games with wins and losses. He took them to their first
- 57:23postseason in 2017 and 18. So he started off really good.
- 57:27When they first brought him there, they had a lot of hopes
- 57:29for him. He was looking really good as
- 57:31the manager of that of that organization back-to-back.
- 57:34Winning. What was the year?
- 57:35Wait, what was the year that they went to the World Series
- 57:38and they lost to the Red Sox? Was that 2017?
- 57:46Yeah, they went they well. They lost in four games to the
- 57:50Red Sox. They got swept in the series.
- 57:53Yeah, they went to the, they went to the the NIL, the Excuse
- 57:57me Wild Card game in 2017 and in the NL Division Series in 2018.
- 58:06Yeah, they had some success there early on.
- 58:11You know, you can't. I hate when managers, coaches
- 58:14get fired in season. I normally prefer you make the
- 58:19move after the season unless you really think you can salvage the
- 58:23season. We were talking, well, I know
- 58:25we're running out of time. So to be my last statement, we
- 58:28were discussing like a coaching change with the Denver Nuggets
- 58:32and OK C and you were saying, oh, it seems like the Nuggets
- 58:36moving on for Mark Malone. Mike Malone is working out, but
- 58:42we it's only working out if they beat OKC.
- 58:46If they beat OKC, you could feel OK, maybe it's worked out.
- 58:51If they lose to OKC, you can't say the move has worked out.
- 58:54Yes, what have you done for me lately?
- 58:56That's the mentality that that a lot of us live in and that's how
- 59:00it is in sports. And so we wish Bud well in his
- 59:03next career adventure. We appreciate everybody for
- 59:05joining us today. Jack, always a pleasure to have
- 59:08you on. Join Jack and Frank Luktierzo
- 59:10tonight with a special guest at 7 for the Glove 5th and also
- 59:14shows throughout today on the network and Jack and I will see
- 59:18you on Wednesday morning. Otherwise, for this show, we
- 59:20wish everybody a great day.
