- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Episode 186. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We're so glad you're here. Lucas: Last episode, we learned how to ask 'what' in Amharic with ምን. Today we're going to review and practice it a bunch. Luna: Yes! I need that. I was trying to use it yesterday and I kept freezing. Lucas: That's exactly why we review. So let's start with the word itself. Luna: ምን. Lucas: Perfect. Now, the most common phrase is ምን ነው? meaning 'what is it?' Let's say it together. Luna: ምን ነው? Lucas: Good. Now, if you want to ask 'what is your name?' to a male, you say Wait — we used ማን there, which is 'who'. But for 'what is your name?', Amharic actually uses ማን. So let's focus on ምን for objects. For example, if you point at something and ask 'what is this?' you say I love that. It's so useful. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice a little scene. Imagine you're at a market and you see a fruit you don't know. You point and say... Lucas: And the vendor replies 'This is a banana.' Luna: Oh, so I learned the fruit and the question at the same time. That's efficient. Lucas: That's the idea. Now, another phrase: if you want to ask 'what is that over there?' you can say ያ ምን ነው? But let's stick with ይህ for now. Let's do a few more rounds. I'll point to something, and you ask me what it is. Luna: Okay. Pointing at my coffee mug... 'This is coffee.' Luna: ይህ ምን ነው? pointing at my phone. 'This is a phone.' Luna: Nice. I'm getting the pattern. Lucas: You are. Now let's mix it up. I'll ask you: ይህ ምን ነው? I'll hold up an imaginary book. Luna: Umm... I think that's 'book'. Lucas: Yes! Exactly. You nailed it. Luna: Oh, that felt good. Lucas: Now, you know how to ask 'what is your name?' from last episode. But remember, for names, we use ማን. So ስምህ ማን ነው? for a male, and ስምሽ ማን ነው? for a female. Let's review those quickly. Luna: Okay. So if I'm asking a male friend: ስምህ ማን ነው? Lucas: And he would answer: ስሜ ሉካስ ነው. Now asking a female: ስምሽ ማን ነው? Luna: ስምሽ ማን ነው? And she says: ስሜ ሉና ነው. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's combine both. Imagine you're at a party. You see a new object on the table, you ask Then you meet a person, you ask It's all connected. Luna: I love that. It feels like real communication. Lucas: That's the goal. And speaking of real communication, we want to keep making these episodes for you. Quick honest thing — a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these. Luna: Yeah, it's true. No ads, just listener support. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Amharic, that's the way to keep it going. Lucas: Exactly. And if you already do, thank you. Now back to ምን. Let's do a quick fire round. I'll say an English phrase, you say it in Amharic. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: What is this? Lucas: What is that? Luna: ያ ምን ነው? Wait, we didn't practice that one much. Lucas: But you got it right. ያ ምን ነው? is perfect. One more: What is your name? to a male. Lucas: And to a female? Lucas: You did it. I'm so proud of you. Luna: Thanks! I feel like I can actually use this. Lucas: That's the whole point. Keep practicing these phrases throughout your day. Point at things and ask yourself Then answer yourself in Amharic. Luna: I might get weird looks if I do that in public, but okay. Lucas: Worth it. Alright, that's it for today. Thank you for learning with Fexingo. Luna: Practice these till we chat again. See you next time.
