- 0:00Speaker 1: Sponsored by I hate the whole thing. I didn't even
- 0:06save a bite, right, Donut critic, Ben is your and
- 0:15and we we had a challenge last week, and you
- 0:18have a risen to the challenge.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:20Speaker 3: So you guys said, take the best of Utah list
- 0:23and go through the city weekly and decide which one
- 0:28is like a correct list, and I I kind of
- 0:31went the opposite approach. I was like, which ones don't
- 0:33I agree with? And the one that I saw that
- 0:37I didn't agree with was the cinnamon roll list.
- 0:39Speaker 2: They okay, they had a best.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Cinnamon roll on their list, Yes, so there. Number one
- 0:44was dough Lady Lady. Number two was straw Market, and
- 0:48number three was Village Baker. Right, so I agree with
- 0:52one on that list, and that's dough Lady. So at
- 0:54least they got number one, right. So she is a
- 0:58She started in her kitchen in COVID, has been in
- 1:02commercial kitchen for the last couple of years, and is
- 1:05now in Mill.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Creek, Milk Creek.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yes, so she just barely opened, probably about a month ago,
- 1:09so she'll bring those in. She has a location called
- 1:12Lady and Lady. Yeah, those are really delicious. She jumps
- 1:15a thing of cream on it before baking, so they're
- 1:18super gooey and delicious. I will bring them in because
- 1:20I do love them and they are on my top
- 1:22three list, but there's a lot on that list that
- 1:26I don't agree with. And we're going to talk about
- 1:29Village Baker. So that's what I brought in for you today.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I mean, I like this, it's a good cinnamon it is.
- 1:36Speaker 4: I judge a cinnamon roll mostly by its frosting, and
- 1:39that's that's good stuff.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:41Speaker 3: That is the highlight of that role is the frosting.
- 1:44So I would say they're frosting. What they do on
- 1:48their cakes, what they do on their other desserts really delicious.
- 1:51So yes, what you're tasting on that frosting is going
- 1:54to be their highlight. However, it's it's really hard on
- 1:57these lists because you know, you're getting pe people that
- 2:00are regional. So I think a lot of this is
- 2:03going to be like a really Salt Lake based list.
- 2:05It's going to be people that maybe aren't searching out
- 2:08like I am and other foodies like trying to get
- 2:10the actual best list. You know, it's something that they
- 2:12get in their neighborhood or their parents got, and so
- 2:15they always get in so true. So a lot of
- 2:17times you're getting these voters that are not as experienced
- 2:20in cinnamon rolls. Across the board.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You're actually going around and trying and not just stay
- 2:25in Salt Lake. You go south the north.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Yeah, there's that billboard as you go by Peiwan and
- 2:30it says the best cinnamon rolls in the West.
- 2:32Speaker 5: You know what.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I had to stop and I will say they weren't
- 2:35the best cinnamon roles in the West. But it was
- 2:38a fun little play and I'm glad that town is
- 2:40trying to get people in there. But anyway, so this
- 2:42village baker, Yeah, so I think if you go in
- 2:44and you get their carrot cake, you get their rice krispies,
- 2:47they're a great bakery. But to be on the top
- 2:49three list, like that's really tough to put in there.
- 2:52Speaker 4: And so I mean, I I like those pretty good stuff.
- 2:55I haven't had any other one, so I'll trust your judgment.
- 2:58Speaker 2: So what are the other ones?
- 3:00Speaker 3: So I, well, let's talk about some of the characteristics
- 3:03that I think make a good cinnamon roll. I think
- 3:06for sure we talked about the frosting. It's got to
- 3:08be good frosting. Some people like icing. Some people like
- 3:10cream cheese frosting, and that is a dividing line.
- 3:13Speaker 2: For a lot of people. That's subjective.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I can go both ways, and I like it both ways. Yeah,
- 3:17as long as it's really quality, I do like it
- 3:19both ways. This one is a cream cheese and most
- 3:22of them on the list are cream cheese, but there
- 3:25has to be a lot of cinnamon, and I feel
- 3:27like that was the downfall in this.
- 3:28Speaker 1: One, Anamon that that is that you are correct.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I've seen there are there is more cinnamon and other cinnamon.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Rolls, and I don't understand why people don't put more
- 3:39cinnamon in it, because everyone loves more cinnamon.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I never go there's way too much cinnamon.
- 3:44Speaker 4: I'm just glad there's not raisins in it.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I don't care.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Gina and I speak the same language.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I think I disagree with you.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yes, I love raisins and them, but there has to
- 3:59be a number of good swirls, and so a lot
- 4:01of times they just do like one swirl. This one
- 4:03actually had a decent amount of swirls, and that allows
- 4:06for some gooey or some soft centers. It also is
- 4:09amazing when there's a lot of cinmon and a lot
- 4:11of swirls because then it kind of like falls apart,
- 4:13and that's kind of what you're wanting to see. And
- 4:17then on the bottom, when there is a lot of
- 4:18cinnamon sugar, it caramelizes sometimes. Yeah, So it's that additional texture,
- 4:24it's additional flavor, and it just makes the role a
- 4:26lot better.
- 4:27Speaker 4: This one's not a mess though, Like it's delicious, but
- 4:30not doing messy like you need to take a bath
- 4:32after you eat it.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 2: True.
- 4:34Speaker 3: And one of the things I like a role that
- 4:37you can have cold, not just one that's warmed up,
- 4:39you know, because some roles you have to have them
- 4:41warmed to make them edible or good. Yeah, and that
- 4:45is just a quality that I think some have. So
- 4:47the roles that I really do, like we talked about
- 4:50dough Lady. I think hers are really good. And then
- 4:52Downtown Eva's Bakery.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Okay, it's really really good.
- 4:57Speaker 3: It's almost like a not necessarily like a croissant, but
- 5:02it's got like a shell that's like a little bit crispy.
- 5:04It's got that caramelized bottom and a lot of cinema.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I've heard about it.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Yeah, And and if I'm remembering correctly, there's a little
- 5:11bit of nuttiness to it too, so there's like some
- 5:14built into the filling. And then we've talked about thirst.
- 5:18I brought in thirst stuff. Their cinnamon rolls. When they
- 5:21do them, they don't do them often right now are
- 5:23really good for the same thing, caramelized bottom and really
- 5:26good frostings.
- 5:27Speaker 1: So now I just want to try all these I
- 5:30want exactly.
- 5:31Speaker 2: That's that's what's that's why you got to follow Ben
- 5:33on Instagram.
- 5:34Speaker 1: So what you're saying is, don't get the Pillsbury tube
- 5:36that you.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Sunt Oh my gosh, I can't.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I can't when you're when you're drunk.
- 5:42Speaker 3: When when I show up for breakfast at somebody's house
- 5:45and then like we have those pulled out, it's like,
- 5:47oh man.
- 5:48Speaker 4: But you know they have their because they're warm, yeah,
- 5:53and that you can get away with them.
- 5:55Speaker 3: You hide it with the warmth.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Geane. If you're going to do that, at least do
- 5:59Roads bacon Serve.
- 6:01Speaker 1: If you're going to do that, how do you feel
- 6:02about Roads Bacon Served?
- 6:05Speaker 3: Actually, I use Roads Bacon Serve for a lot of
- 6:07different things. So like scones are fry bread like, they're perfect.
- 6:11You use it like that, and I think it's really delicious.
- 6:13Speaker 2: So you're right, though, this does not have much cinnamon
- 6:16now that I look at it.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I'm mad. I wasted my time.
- 6:19Speaker 2: But ga, that was a cream cheese frosh.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Well, I know I knew someone was going to point
- 6:24that out, and you ate it. I ate it.
- 6:27Speaker 2: This is a breakthrough. This is actually a breakthrough.
- 6:31Speaker 3: But overall, when you're looking for things, I think you
- 6:33need to just take these as points on the map,
- 6:35or as I call it, food triangulation. So you take
- 6:39these lists and then you pair it with foodies or
- 6:42other people that are recommending stuff, and then Google and
- 6:44Yelp and kind of make that triangulation on where you're
- 6:47going to find a really good cinnamon roll. When you're
- 6:49relying too many, too much on these lists, then you're
- 6:52gonna be let down.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Unless it's best morning radio show. Well yeah h then
- 6:58it's completely you know.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Who makes You'll point this out, just you know who
- 7:02makes the best damn Simmon rolls. O. My wife from scratch,
- 7:08from scratch, there's no she built the dough, the whole thing,
- 7:11and she does what you say. She just caramelized. Yes,
- 7:15good stuff.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Now that's got me thinking about my mom's jelly roll?
- 7:18Is she used to make jelly roll? I haven't had
- 7:20a jelly roll in ages?
- 7:23Speaker 3: Okay, Now get something else to eat, give me hungry.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I always learn from you Donut Critic.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yes, not not just places to go, but what to
- 7:33look for exactly.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah, So if you go on Donut Critic on Instagram
- 7:37right now, I put it on my story so you
- 7:39can see the characteristics. I also have a question box,
- 7:42so if you want to put in a cinnamon roll
- 7:44that you think I need to go and try, I
- 7:46will respond to that.
- 7:48Speaker 1: You're always looking for suggestions, yes's always nude places cropping up.
- 7:52Speaker 3: And yeah, I'm not one that's just going to be
- 7:54like spitting out thinking. I have all the answers because
- 7:57there's things that pop up all the time that are
- 7:59new and I want to go out and try them,
- 8:01and yeah, I'm willing to.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Sometimes it's even like an old place but they've hired
- 8:05a new chef for something.
- 8:07Speaker 3: There's a revamp.
- 8:08Speaker 5: Yeah, and of course our attorney, Ed Brass is convinced
- 8:11that you weigh two hundred and eighty five pounds.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I was going to win that out. How was this guy?
- 8:18Speaker 3: I spent two hours on the elliptical yesterday just to
- 8:21pay for some stuff yesterday morning.
- 8:24Speaker 2: So exactly, there you go.
- 8:26Speaker 1: So you should follow the donut critic.
- 8:29Speaker 2: So they want one more time cinnamon rolls in order.
- 8:33Speaker 3: That I that I love you love Okay, So I
- 8:35love the dough lady, lady, and then I love Eva's
- 8:38Bakery downtown, and then I love thirst when they are
- 8:42able to do them. And then if you're gonna go
- 8:44for like a fourth Reds in West Jordan, she does
- 8:47like a taken bake, So.
- 8:49Speaker 2: All right, fresh, I like that. Thank you donut critic
- 8:55on Instagram. Thank you Ben,
