- 0:00Speaker 1: Are you enjoying this? Is anyone enjoying this at all?
- 0:02Speaker 1: It's one more thing. I'm strong and getty. One more thing.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I took my son and two of his best friends
- 0:17Speaker 1: on a little getaway Friday for my son's birthday. And
- 0:22Speaker 1: because they're teenagers to fifteen year olds and a fourteen
- 0:24Speaker 1: year old, I have no idea if they had a
- 0:26Speaker 1: good time or not. I don't really know. What do
- 0:29Speaker 1: you mean? Huh, you can't tell teenagers. You can't tell
- 0:33Speaker 1: they just see, they got to act so aloof all
- 0:35Speaker 1: the time, oh yeah, okay, now, a lot of laughing
- 0:41Speaker 1: to themselves and everything like that. And I heard them
- 0:43Speaker 1: in their hotel room and they seem to be having
- 0:45Speaker 1: good time. But like in terms of just asking them questions, see, yeah, okay, cool,
- 0:50Speaker 1: right whatever. Just I don't know. It's that cool guy age,
- 0:54Speaker 1: the cool guy age. Oh my god, the amount of
- 0:57Speaker 1: time it takes to an effort to walk, dress, talk,
- 1:02Speaker 1: the way you got to be to be cool. Look,
- 1:03Speaker 1: it looks like a lot of work.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I'm usually pretty good at sussing out why, you know,
- 1:10Speaker 2: kids and teenagers act in certain ways developmentally speaking, the
- 1:14Speaker 2: rest of it, but the whole I don't like anything.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I'm not sure what that's all about. You want to
- 1:24Speaker 2: seem in control. And do they associate and this is
- 1:28Speaker 2: all I'm not saying this is insidious or anything, because
- 1:31Speaker 2: it's practically universal. Yeah, but do they associate enthusiasm with childishness?
- 1:38Speaker 1: I wonder that's a pretty good one right there. But
- 1:41Speaker 1: I felt like the three of them together, I mean,
- 1:44Speaker 1: we did some pretty cool stuff, and they saw some
- 1:46Speaker 1: pretty cool stuff, and I felt like they each had
- 1:49Speaker 1: to pretend to the other two that they weren't impressed
- 1:52Speaker 1: for some reason, which left me thinking, why are we
- 1:55Speaker 1: doing this? Is anybody enjoying this?
- 1:58Speaker 2: Feeling superior to things and people? It's really important to
- 2:04Speaker 2: teens too. That's why the you know, the social ladder
- 2:08Speaker 2: thing can be so brutal, because anybody you can put
- 2:11Speaker 2: below you elevates you, like on the class rank of coolness,
- 2:15Speaker 2: which is just savage and it's terrible.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Well, here's a perfect example to make my own point,
- 2:20Speaker 1: I suppose. So we were at the Grove, which is
- 2:24Speaker 1: a shopping area in Los Angeles for people who don't know,
- 2:26Speaker 1: very cool, upscale, outdoor, beautiful day in LA. Tons of
- 2:31Speaker 1: people there and everything like that, and I let them
- 2:34Speaker 1: walk around and do stuff. They got some food the
- 2:36Speaker 1: Farmer's market there, and they went around, shopped at some
- 2:38Speaker 1: stores that they like and that sort of thing. I
- 2:40Speaker 1: left them alone, and I thought, all I was walking around,
- 2:42Speaker 1: I thought they have got to be noticing the female
- 2:46Speaker 1: contingent here. I mean, because it was I mean between
- 2:49Speaker 1: the ages of like fifteen and thirty, you know, hot
- 2:52Speaker 1: and cold, running la tan well dressed attractive women, and
- 2:58Speaker 1: I thought they got to be noticing with teenage boys. Anyway.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I brought that up on the Uber ride to the airport.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Some attractive woman there in place. Yeah, I didn't think
- 3:07Speaker 1: so not. Okay, now I know you're having to put
- 3:10Speaker 1: on a front, because that's ridiculous. I mean, you're in
- 3:14Speaker 1: freaking loss upscale Los Angeles. Unless you're all three gay,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you're really trying too hard.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Well, and then at least say, I don't know about
- 3:23Speaker 2: the chicks, but the dudes were pretty fresh or fly
- 3:26Speaker 2: or whatever people say these days. Fly That one goes
- 3:29Speaker 2: back like twenty five thirty years, doesn't it. You know,
- 3:32Speaker 2: that reminds me I've got to find that hang. I'm
- 3:36Speaker 2: gonna make a note to myself even as we speak.
- 3:42Speaker 2: NPR did a feature about dropping testosterone levels, and they
- 3:47Speaker 2: had all the men at the NPR station test their testosterone.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I haven't had an erection in a decade and a
- 3:54Speaker 1: half and they were all like, way sub average. Oh
- 3:59Speaker 1: really like every.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Dude using finger quotes who worked there. It was like, uh, sorry,
- 4:06Speaker 2: but in the parlance of today's youth, a real beta male,
- 4:10Speaker 2: I mean, like a effeminate fella. And that does not
- 4:15Speaker 2: shock It amuses me in a way, and it confirms
- 4:18Speaker 2: what I've thought, Well, what you came first. I mean,
- 4:22Speaker 2: is there something about working at NPR that drives down
- 4:25Speaker 2: your just drivesterone levels that could happen or is that
- 4:28Speaker 2: just a certain sort of person that.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I think it's a type and there's a lot Yeah,
- 4:34Speaker 1: oh I would agree, Yeah, I know some.
- 4:39Speaker 3: I hope it's nothing that these guys have been taught
- 4:41Speaker 3: like in school, like, oh, we don't engage in toxic masculinity.
- 4:44Speaker 1: No, it's not that. I don't think that. It was
- 4:49Speaker 1: just a I got to be unimpressed. It makes me
- 4:51Speaker 1: cooler to be unimpressed. I think that's what it was.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, if you are a normal, healthy young
- 4:58Speaker 2: man and you see an attractive woman with whom your
- 5:02Speaker 2: very biology cries out for you to couple and produce
- 5:06Speaker 2: young They say, if you say she's really good looking,
- 5:11Speaker 2: I'm gonna hit you with a bat. She's hot, pam
- 5:14Speaker 2: ow ow ow, she's really cute, pam.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Oh god stop. You can't help yourself.
- 5:21Speaker 2: But I didn't think so. Although again, the teenage lads,
- 5:26Speaker 2: I give so much latitude. Adolescence is so hard and complicated. Now,
- 5:32Speaker 2: if you're twenty six and you're the guy.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Says I don't think she's good looking, Oh my god,
- 5:37Speaker 1: that's pathetic.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Oh it's so pathetic.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I dated Okay, Oh, I get it.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Because you're such a stud and could have any woman
- 5:46Speaker 2: on earth. The top two percent of women isn't quite
- 5:49Speaker 2: hot enough for you. I get the message you're trying
- 5:51Speaker 2: to send, and it's sad.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I dated a guy like that in high school and
- 5:56Speaker 4: it was insufferable. He could not he could not be
- 5:59Speaker 4: am used by anything, and I just remember it going like,
- 6:03Speaker 4: are you are you too cool for everything? I'm not
- 6:05Speaker 4: understanding this and he actually, I don't know that he's
- 6:10Speaker 4: grown out of it, to be honest with you.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Thirty six, Now I've.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Got to be vague about this to protect the innocent,
- 6:17Speaker 2: But there was somebody I know very very well who
- 6:20Speaker 2: was dating a young man who was very attractive, very smart,
- 6:26Speaker 2: great future ahead of him. But not to overstate it,
- 6:30Speaker 2: but he definitely had a mister spockish personality where he
- 6:35Speaker 2: wasn't like super delighted by much. Sure, he was just
- 6:39Speaker 2: emotionally very flat, very cool, very reserved, I mean, like
- 6:43Speaker 2: very and this is you know, this is beyond your teenagers,
- 6:47Speaker 2: and I just I think that's probably just the way
- 6:49Speaker 2: he was made.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I gotta believe in that case, since he was
- 6:53Speaker 1: attractive and you said had a bright future. Most of
- 6:56Speaker 1: the people have known past being a teenager, like you know,
- 7:00Speaker 1: high school or high schoolers different. As you've said, it's
- 7:03Speaker 1: just part of the thing for whatever reason. But like, yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 1: you're you're thirty years old and you're not impressed by
- 7:08Speaker 1: anything or anyone. I've known a plenty of like real losers.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I mean, your dating prospects are not good, your financial
- 7:16Speaker 1: prospects are not good. So obviously that's a protection mechanism
- 7:19Speaker 1: if you pretend you're not interested in anybody in this
- 7:23Speaker 1: bar because you know, you feel like none of them
- 7:26Speaker 1: are interested in you. That is a help to protect you. Yeah,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and it's.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Been said of bigotry, and I think it's right that
- 7:33Speaker 2: a lot of it springs from people who are desperate
- 7:36Speaker 2: to feel superior to someone. Yeah yeah, I mean they
- 7:41Speaker 2: don't have any rational basis on which to feel superior.
- 7:44Speaker 2: They go with you know, skin color or whatever.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yeah, because I'm picturing a particular person I know, and
- 7:50Speaker 1: I've known several people like that, not impressed with anybody's
- 7:53Speaker 1: car or house or anything like that because they are
- 7:56Speaker 1: never going to have anything worth a crap. So it
- 7:59Speaker 1: just makes it easier. I guess all the way pretty
- 8:01Speaker 1: sad and transparent, so it doesn't bother me. I mean,
- 8:04Speaker 1: I feel bad for somebody who has to do that
- 8:07Speaker 1: to get through the day, but yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's psychological self protection. I ran into somebody like
- 8:12Speaker 2: that recently too, and it hurt my heart because you know,
- 8:15Speaker 2: they're not a bad person, but it was definitely a
- 8:20Speaker 2: rationalizing thing. It's similar to, you know, the only way
- 8:26Speaker 2: you can be successful is because you're a cheating, you know,
- 8:29Speaker 2: white person or whatever. And it's rare that you see
- 8:33Speaker 2: somebody who's reached their full potential pitching that sort of nonsense.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Uh oh, and one more thing on this, and I'm
- 8:40Speaker 1: just gonna have to accept this at a certain level.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I fight it in my own home. I've talked about
- 8:45Speaker 1: this a lot, like the stirring at your phone. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: don't want you doing it in the car with me.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I don't understood the dinner table, but this was my
- 8:52Speaker 1: son and his friends. This was kind of their weekend
- 8:54Speaker 1: for his birthday. So I'm not going to tell them
- 8:55Speaker 1: how to interact with each other. But it's amazing how
- 8:58Speaker 1: much time they spent looking at their phones when the
- 9:01Speaker 1: three of them are together. That's just I mean, it's
- 9:04Speaker 1: just it's the way the world's going to be. And I,
- 9:06Speaker 1: you know, and I can't change it. But I just thought, wow, it's.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Like the main form of entertainment, even when you're in
- 9:14Speaker 4: good company.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Right and like, and we're riding around in these ubers
- 9:17Speaker 1: through Los Angeles, and there's all kinds of freaking cool
- 9:20Speaker 1: things everywhere you go, or unique things you've never seen before.
- 9:23Speaker 1: And I thought, you know, I pointed out a couple
- 9:25Speaker 1: of a couple of people and they glance up for
- 9:27Speaker 1: their phone for a second, go back to their phone.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I finally gave up on that and just not interested
- 9:32Speaker 1: in observing anything in the world other than and they're
- 9:35Speaker 1: playing games on their front then looking at the game
- 9:37Speaker 1: on their phone. All right, I guess. Yeah, I've never
- 9:42Speaker 1: seen the Hollywood sign before. Oh that's another thing. That's
- 9:45Speaker 1: another thing I picked up at, and that makes perfectly
- 9:47Speaker 1: good sense. The younger set has no interest in Hollywood.
- 9:53Speaker 1: That thing is dead as soon as like forty five
- 9:57Speaker 1: year olds grow old enough to be dead. I don't
- 9:59Speaker 1: know what the cutoff is, but the younger generation, there's
- 10:01Speaker 1: no such thing as that. I grew up with, like
- 10:06Speaker 1: Hollywood movie stars being a thing, it's not with the
- 10:09Speaker 1: younger generation. They don't even know what we're talking about.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Staying at a hotel right next to or right down
- 10:15Speaker 2: the street from Warner Brothers studios, I'm thinking, oh, man,
- 10:19Speaker 2: that's where, right, No, none of that.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that doesn't mean anything to the younger crowd, which man,
- 10:25Speaker 1: I don't know if Hollywood's aware of that. They probably are,
- 10:27Speaker 1: but I wonder what that is.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Gonna be.
- 10:32Speaker 4: All the streaming services maybe lost in the I think
- 10:35Speaker 4: it's just so diffuse, I.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Guess in video gaming, and yeah, that's that's part of it.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Plus there's more transparency in the world these days, so
- 10:43Speaker 2: you just you don't think of movie actors as these distant,
- 10:48Speaker 2: superior race of humans, beings that you will never know,
- 10:53Speaker 2: you'll never touch, you'll never hear from. They just exist
- 10:56Speaker 2: on the silver screen or it carefully orchestrated publicity events. Now,
- 11:01Speaker 2: if some famous actor and his old lady are bitching
- 11:04Speaker 2: at each other in the streets, you see the video
- 11:06Speaker 2: on TMZ. Alrighty go out without makeup, or scene going
- 11:10Speaker 2: into a public bathroom in a park or whatever.
- 11:13Speaker 1: You think Larry.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Goes is Ben Affleck pooping. I'll be dad. You didn't
- 11:17Speaker 2: get that with Bogey and Picall.
- 11:19Speaker 1: No, you did not get their humbry bogar pooping. Yes, Michael,
- 11:22Speaker 1: Now I just say.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Younger people, they can film themselves, so it's nothing special
- 11:25Speaker 3: to be on TV. It's like, well, geez, I do
- 11:27Speaker 3: that all the time.
- 11:27Speaker 1: That's not a bad point. Actually, oh, excellent point. I say, well,
- 11:31Speaker 1: you win. That is the podcast observation of the day. Congratulations, Michael. Well,
- 11:37Speaker 1: I guess that's it.
