- 0:09Hour number two, welcome back Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 0:12Sports Radio Network. By far the best.
- 0:15This is it. This is #1.
- 0:17OK, big gap. Really.
- 0:20This one's your choice. This is of all The Beach Boys.
- 0:24This is the one for me. You're surfing USA.
- 0:28Aren't you California girls? OK.
- 0:30Yeah, yeah. Another good one, No, there's a
- 0:32lot of good ones. I can't believe with Beach Boys
- 0:35are dying, getting everybody's getting older, right?
- 0:38Let's get to David Eichel, everybody, said David.
- 0:40He seems. Like you think David knows The
- 0:41Beach Boys at all? He's a little different
- 0:43generation than us. I'm going to say, yeah, you do,
- 0:47don't you? Yes, yes.
- 0:48My dad was going to be 80 this year.
- 0:51I watched the Beats Boys live in concert.
- 0:54When I was great. Come on now.
- 0:57That's a weird little. Music guy over here.
- 0:59I heard that news earlier. Rest in peace.
- 1:02Classics. Classics on Classics for sure.
- 1:04Where did where? Where was the concert?
- 1:08I believe it was in Cedar City, UT so it's a pretty decent sized
- 1:13little venue there. I saw them.
- 1:16I saw Koreans. Clearwater Revival.
- 1:19Boy, your old man had some great taste.
- 1:21Yeah, yeah, he definitely did have some good taste, but I
- 1:25don't exactly have an explanation for my music taste
- 1:28now compared to what I grew up with.
- 1:30But alas, here we are. Yeah, good stuff.
- 1:33Well, welcome to the program. Grateful for you coming on as
- 1:36always. David I Colton, I guess we start
- 1:38with you. The kind of the news of the week
- 1:40right, that that hit late last week, the house settlement over
- 1:43the weekend. Everybody's had at least you
- 1:46know, period of time to digest it.
- 1:48Well, at least you wouldn't. We think we've got it all
- 1:50covered. Then Trent throws out today.
- 1:53Well, what about schools? The basketball only schools,
- 1:56Creighton a Gonzaga Big E schools seemingly since they
- 2:00don't have to split that pot amongst football.
- 2:03Does that give them a leg up and where the powers that be keeping
- 2:07are taking that into mind when they decided how this was going
- 2:10to be put down and and put into it into action?
- 2:16Yeah, I think there's a lot of layers with that question
- 2:18though, too. But I mean, I'll go back to a
- 2:19conversation I think we had two or three months ago on this
- 2:22show, and that's when West Virginia people are arguing that
- 2:25they're almost just to go of a job.
- 2:27That's crazy. I sat back laughing my butt off
- 2:30and I'm like, guys, Creighton's the top five job right now and
- 2:33it at least top ten. I mean, you think about, like
- 2:35you said, with the house settlement and all this coming
- 2:37into light, which I think we all kind of thought this is the
- 2:40direction it was going. What about UConn basketball?
- 2:43I mean, do you really think that they care about football?
- 2:46Yeah, they have a football program, but kind of right.
- 2:48I mean, look, Uconn's could be a staying power.
- 2:52Butler, I think could have a lot of money as well.
- 2:55I mean, the Creighton, those schools that don't traditionally
- 2:58throw money into football or don't have a football program, I
- 3:01think they're going to be near the top.
- 3:02I mean, how many high level impact transfers did Greg
- 3:05McDermott get this year at Creighton?
- 3:07How do we even want to know the kind of money they're playing
- 3:10with? And then of course, you have
- 3:10Texas Tech with the oil company. There's CBS Sports article
- 3:14basically came out, I believe couple days ago.
- 3:16They talked about how they have like a $55 million athletics
- 3:20roster across the board. I mean, I think that's the most
- 3:23of any program in the country at this point.
- 3:26It's going to be interesting. I do think, I think that this is
- 3:28a good step in the right direction of getting some sort
- 3:31of consistency. But now come the lawsuits and
- 3:34now comes the appeals, right? I mean, you think back, I think
- 3:36what, 35 minutes ago to about an hour, there's a group of lawyers
- 3:40are now suing saying that violates Title 9.
- 3:43And that's the situation that I'm happy I don't have to fight
- 3:46for one way or the other. Because if you just want to take
- 3:48the facts for surface level without college football guys,
- 3:51none of this is actually happening.
- 3:54So it's going to be a really interesting thing to kind of see
- 3:58how this all sells down Iowa, of course, getting a $20.5 million
- 4:01kind of budget. The swarm is still going to be
- 4:03alive and active. Brad Heinrich has kind of
- 4:05explained that on our board as well as that's kind of a whole
- 4:08different dicey situation as well.
- 4:10But if people thought that, you know, things were going to start
- 4:14to clear up, I hate to say it, I still think we're about a year
- 4:16away from getting any sort of consistency, but at least we're
- 4:20seeing some sort of tangible progress and what's going to be
- 4:23quote, UN quote, normal. So I will picks up on the
- 4:26football side of things, a new commitment.
- 4:28Sawyer Jurorski from up in Edina, MN, Minneapolis area, kid
- 4:32from the rich suburbs over there of Edina.
- 4:34But just looking at this recruiting class, Carson
- 4:37Nielsen, would it be fair to say the Waterloo offensive lineman,
- 4:40he's kind of the headliner this class.
- 4:42I think things are shaping up in this new era of high school
- 4:45recruiting. Yeah, I mean, I think that's
- 4:47without a doubt. I mean, I still think that Kirk
- 4:49Fairness and Tyler Barnes and then what need to hold down the
- 4:51in state lines and at least the Midwest lines.
- 4:54I mean, look at Illinois right now.
- 4:55Illinois is not in the slouch. I think they're college Football
- 4:58playoffs, a dark horse contender with what they have going into
- 5:01the season. But I think Iowa's done a nice
- 5:03job. I think it's good to kind of
- 5:04pick up the defensive line commit.
- 5:06I think the offensive lines looking very strong in that.
- 5:09I still like Cash Correa, the California quarterback.
- 5:12I love his quick release. I think Tim Lester thinks
- 5:14there's a lot of tools to be able to work with there.
- 5:17But recruiting is another thing, guys, that's going to get a lot
- 5:20more complicated. It is simple because obviously
- 5:22the dollar figures going around the information, everything's
- 5:27going to change on a dime. I mean, I, I, I think Sean's job
- 5:30has gotten infinitely harder. A lot of recruiting guys across
- 5:33the network and across the country.
- 5:35But I do think also that, you know, Kirk Farris and Ben
- 5:38McCollum kind of have the same mantra to some extent when they
- 5:42think about when it comes to NIL.
- 5:44They don't want to get in bidding wars guys.
- 5:46They're going to look for guys that are right for their program
- 5:48and pay them what makes sense. And I'm still of the belief that
- 5:51you should be able to, you know, you should be paying the guys
- 5:54that stay on your roster and that are impact players more
- 5:57than a potential incoming freshman.
- 5:59I think that's one way we kind of limit this sort of not a
- 6:02damage, but this little bit, you know, bidding wars with
- 6:06everything else going on right now.
- 6:07So recruiting is going to get a lot more complicated.
- 6:10I still think that I was going to try to stick to its culture,
- 6:13its values, the developmental aspects.
- 6:15And I do think that their approach to this situation is,
- 6:18hey, look, you can make a lot of money while playing for us.
- 6:20We're going to help to develop you.
- 6:21But I do think that there's one common message that does span
- 6:25back when Kirk fans took over in 1999.
- 6:29Look for that second NFL contract.
- 6:31That's what's ultimately going to be the generational wealth
- 6:34that you want to create. Now for college stars that don't
- 6:37have a potential Sunday future, of course, you're going to want
- 6:41to go get as much money as you can to at least give you that
- 6:43little bit of head start in life as well.
- 6:46But I am going to be very interested to see if Iowa takes
- 6:48the recruiting more nationally or if they are just going to put
- 6:51an extra emphasis in the Midwest guys and the Iowa guys.
- 6:54Because with the television contracts, with playing coast to
- 6:57coast with, with all this settlement money that's being
- 7:00awarded to each Power 5 school, you can afford to recruit
- 7:04nationally now. And if you don't, there's a real
- 7:07risk that you're going to get left behind the dock.
- 7:10Just back to our Beach Boys theme.
- 7:12Somebody just texted me. Round, round, get around.
- 7:14I get around pretty good one gotta be on the list.
- 7:17God. God only knows number one.
- 7:19OK? I'm not.
- 7:20I'm not. You're not going to budget.
- 7:21Nope, not going to budget. All right, back to the Hawks.
- 7:23Scott Pioli is now part of of the staff in a kind of a general
- 7:28manager type of role. Is that how you read it, David?
- 7:31What can we expect from a. You mean he was there in the
- 7:34beginning of the Patriots? I I know that there's some folks
- 7:37that are knocking the resume. Yeah.
- 7:39It didn't work out with the Chiefs, but it sure did with New
- 7:41England. Granted, they had #12 that
- 7:43didn't hurt. Your thoughts on Peoli and what
- 7:46his role is going to be? Do you have a grasp of that?
- 7:49Yeah. I was going to say it's kind of
- 7:50interesting you brought that up because the message board
- 7:52reactions have been about the same when it comes to that.
- 7:56But I do think when you look at the college model guys, you
- 7:58can't knock anybody with NFL experience regardless.
- 8:01He's the guy who's in the NFL for a long time.
- 8:04And when we kind of look at the future of college athletics,
- 8:07it's trending more like the NFLI mean Tyler Barnes, who I still
- 8:10believe Tyler Barnes is more so the general manager more than
- 8:13anything else. I do think Scott P always could
- 8:15deal with a lot more of the the logistics of things, a lot more
- 8:19of the NIL direct correlation when it comes to that.
- 8:22I do think that Tyler Barnes is going to have those initial
- 8:24conversations, but I do think he's going to stick to more of
- 8:26the football side and Peoli's get stick to more of the dollars
- 8:30and cents value and as far as you know, what guys can get the
- 8:33NIL, I mean, just kind of budgeting out everything.
- 8:36I think the two are going to work very close together.
- 8:38I'm still trying to nail down the exact specifications of what
- 8:42he's going to do. But I do think I do know that I
- 8:44don't believe it's like a full time role.
- 8:46It's not so much a general manager.
- 8:48It is a little bit, but I would say much more of a consultant
- 8:51than anything else. But again, you get a guy with a
- 8:53lot of NFL experience who has had some success the NFL.
- 8:57Forget about the blimp. We don't need to see the Kansas
- 8:59State chief blimp again on the fire.
- 9:01Purely this is a smart move by Beth Kesson and the University
- 9:05of Iowa. Just ultimately you need as much
- 9:07professional experience and ultimately you need guys a lot
- 9:10of professional experience that can put a lot of these high
- 9:12school players and their parents minds at ease.
- 9:15Because I'm of the belief to where if you're a college
- 9:18program right now and you can take away power from the agent.
- 9:21And put more power. In the high school players and
- 9:24parents, I think that's a lot safer of a bet depending on
- 9:27where we're kind of trending right now.
- 9:29David, on the football, on the field.
- 9:32So summer workouts, we saw the basketball team get going.
- 9:35Football teams going to do that. Can you tell us what these we
- 9:39always hear about these offseason workouts, right?
- 9:41Coaches aren't around. But do you know what they
- 9:43actually can do? Where do they have to go to the
- 9:46park? Can they do it at the football
- 9:47complex? And and secondly, where's Mark
- 9:49Gurdowski as he works his way back from that shoulder surgery?
- 9:53Yeah, from what I've been told, Mark Granowski is basically
- 9:56100%. I mean, he's throwing the ball,
- 9:58he's getting chemistry with his receivers, he's working out.
- 10:00It's not going to surprise me if he's elected team captain this
- 10:03year. Guys, like just from everything
- 10:04I've been told behind the scenes, every time we've talked
- 10:06to players and coaches, One thing that really stood out to
- 10:09me while Kurt, what Kurt Fairness said about Granowski is
- 10:12the fact that he's the guy who went out there and earned the
- 10:14leadership in the weight room and in the film.
- 10:16He was not able to be on the field.
- 10:18He was not throwing the football throughout spring practice, but
- 10:21he's a guy who immediately went in there, gravitated for
- 10:23Lester's offense, spoke up in meetings and has been really
- 10:26kind of diligently working with every position group.
- 10:29That tells me that's the guy who's won 49 games in college,
- 10:32right? That's the guy who's been around
- 10:33the block a few times or two. So I think for the most part
- 10:36when it comes to summer workouts, they're allowed to do
- 10:37some team oriented activities, obviously of their team
- 10:40meetings. They have their morning weight
- 10:42room routine, sometimes 2A days. But as far as mostly on the
- 10:45field work, they do typically go to like a high school stadium.
- 10:48They do typically go to a park, but the resources are limited,
- 10:52The on field coaching is limited.
- 10:54But if you really want to be able to put in a lot of work in
- 10:56the summer, guys, you're going to be able to put in a lot of
- 10:58work in the summer. And with Gronowski coming back
- 11:00from shoulder surgery feeling pretty good and with a whole new
- 11:03receiving core, they've been really, really adamant and hard
- 11:07at work immediately. And another guy I'm going to
- 11:09throw in there, I'm looking at Reese Andersy.
- 11:11I think Reese Andersy and Mark Gronowski could have a really,
- 11:15really good connection this year, especially in the red
- 11:17zone. And I'll tell you, I don't think
- 11:19Iowa has had a true red zone receiver since what, Brandon
- 11:22Smith? Am I missing anybody or was it
- 11:25Brandon Smith? Yeah, I'm probably the first guy
- 11:27from a wide receiver standpoint. That's who I'm thinking of.
- 11:30Going to be telling to see if if Granelski makes the cut to go to
- 11:33Las Vegas for Big 10 Media Days. I think that'll speak volumes
- 11:36because that is anti ference to this point, right?
- 11:39Yeah. So we'll see.
- 11:41And you haven't seen the list, right?
- 11:42We don't know who's going with them at this point, do we?
- 11:45We will probably know within the next two or three weeks.
- 11:48They typically wait till closer to media days.
- 11:50I'd actually announced that I'm going to look at Aaron Graves as
- 11:54probably being a guy, maybe Xavier Wampa.
- 11:57And then I do think it'd be a good idea for Mark Gronowski.
- 12:01I'm not going to be surprised if he doesn't.
- 12:03I mean, I just kind of avoid the offseason surgery question and
- 12:07get guys who kind of been a part of the program for a while.
- 12:10But I do think with this kind of renowned excitement about Iowa
- 12:14actually possessing the football and scoring touchdown, I would
- 12:17personally love to see Gronowski.
- 12:18But again, sometimes it's not about the Iowa media and what
- 12:21they potentially might ask. It's about the other schools
- 12:24that are there and the other reporters are there.
- 12:26They're kind of keeping him out of the limelight.
- 12:29They want they want to talk to the quarterbacks.
- 12:31Have you guys met Kirk Ference? I know he's not going to do it.
- 12:34I'm just saying you. Think about what Kane McNamara
- 12:36had. Kane McNamara gone to Big 10
- 12:39meetings and he transferred from Michigan.
- 12:41Who do you think's taking over that press conference now?
- 12:43Again, I know it's F the FBS South Coast state to Iowa, but
- 12:47all know Michigan guys will have taken that over without.
- 12:51Question. Talk about offseason workouts
- 12:53for the football team. What have you heard about the
- 12:55basketball team? Saw those videos and you're
- 12:57looking for every little nugget that you can coming out of it.
- 13:00Heard anything about? Numbers we've seen.
- 13:02Numbers. We got the numbers for the guys,
- 13:03including 27 for Trev and Iraq. I need to have a talk with him.
- 13:0627, what a weird number for a setter.
- 13:08But what have you heard for the the guys on the hoop side of
- 13:11things? They're offseason workouts.
- 13:13Bennett Sturtz is really good at basketball.
- 13:17No, it's it's been a pretty successful first couple weeks.
- 13:20I mean, I think Ben Mccollum's kind of really done a good job
- 13:22of establishing his tempo, his culture and something that I've
- 13:26been, that's been repeated to me about 3 or 4 times in offseason
- 13:29conversations. Ben, everything Iowa does, Ben
- 13:33McCollum has a thorough and detailed explanation of why
- 13:36they're doing it and how it will help them get better.
- 13:39And that's such a minor detail that might get overlooked, but
- 13:42he is going in depth into every little thing that they do.
- 13:45Bennett starts to playing a little bit more off the ball.
- 13:47Alvaro Fulgaris, who, by the way, is going to represent Spain
- 13:51in the under €20 basketball tournament championships
- 13:54starting next month. Alvaro is going to play some
- 13:57five this year and I do think he's going to need to put on
- 13:59about 10 to 15 more pounds. So I think that strength and
- 14:01conditioning program will be attested free early.
- 14:04But if he can play the five and Iowa has a little bit of
- 14:08versatility there, I was going to have a dangerous spot up five
- 14:12shooter and that pick and pop situation with Bennett Sturt,
- 14:15with Alvaro full Garrett and then Brendan Howsen in the wing.
- 14:18I mean, I do think there's a lot of versatility there.
- 14:21Personally, I'd love to see Cooper Koch start at the four.
- 14:24I think that kid is still full potential.
- 14:26But as far as establishing culture, establishing tempo, I
- 14:29think I think he's done a really good job of that Ben McCollum
- 14:32and company. But I'm also going to say this,
- 14:35and again, it's way early. We need to see how things play
- 14:37out. They're playing fast.
- 14:39Then they did Drake. Guys, everybody's worried about
- 14:42that school face. I really don't think they're
- 14:44going to play like they did last against Drake.
- 14:46I don't know how many times Ben McCollum has said it.
- 14:49I don't know how many people. More times people need to hear
- 14:51it before they believe it or if they need to see it.
- 14:53But I do think that they are going to play faster than they
- 14:56did Drake. So let the Liquidator days go to
- 14:59be a pretty exciting brand of basketball, I think.
- 15:02When? When will McCollum let the media
- 15:04come in and see his see his program in these summer workouts
- 15:08or talk to the head coach? I would have thought that maybe
- 15:10we would have something, a date by now that when that's going to
- 15:14happen. But do we?
- 15:15Have we seen anything we. Have not, but I do think you'll
- 15:19be probably during the Iowa basketball camps or maybe maybe
- 15:24a little bit after. I think year one, they're going
- 15:26to take things a little bit more closer to the vest because they
- 15:28want to have as much time as possible to kind of get that new
- 15:31program established, get everything underway.
- 15:33I think they're going to put out more multimedia, you know,
- 15:36content than they have in the past.
- 15:37But I'm with you, I love to be able to talk to Ben McCollum.
- 15:40I think he's done a really good job on the PR tour.
- 15:43But I also want to talk to Phil Garrett.
- 15:44I want to talk to Allison. I want to talk to thirds.
- 15:46Like there's a lot of storylines we have not hit.
- 15:49But I do think that Iowa basketball has been pretty busy
- 15:51in their own right that we kind of have to say, you know what,
- 15:54when we can get it, we'll take it.
- 15:56And on the flip side of it too, like Jan Jensen's get let us
- 15:59into four different practices this summer for a total of 4
- 16:02hours. So we get one of those times
- 16:04with Ben McCollum and company. I'm going to be thrilled with
- 16:07it, but I'm sitting back back right now and I'm relaxing.
- 16:10But as far as we know, when we know, I'll be sure to pass it
- 16:14along. Then we'll get back on and we'll
- 16:15do it. One more basketball note to
- 16:17Speaking of fool Garris coming in from Robert Morris, there's
- 16:20another Robert Morris transfer there's been some rumors about
- 16:23Josh Amo. Amo Jaffo.
- 16:27I'd probably have pronunciation dead wrong.
- 16:29Anyway, a kind of scoring guard from Robert Morris.
- 16:33He is still in the portal. Any insight into him and maybe
- 16:36another piece for McCollum squad?
- 16:39So I do know that Ben McCollum and company, they're still
- 16:42looking in a portal, They're still looking international
- 16:44prospects. I don't want to say they've
- 16:46given up on a center, but I do think that that comes to a hefty
- 16:50price tag and I think they're willing to overlook that right
- 16:52now. I do know they'd want another
- 16:54scoring guard or another ball handler to move Bennett off the
- 16:57ball a little bit more. As far as the Robert Morris
- 17:00transfer, there's reason to keep close eye on it.
- 17:04Nothing's done, nothing's done, but you might want to keep a
- 17:08little a little attention and detail on that.
- 17:11David Eicholdt, hawkeyeinsider.com, part of 24/7
- 17:14Sports. Well done, David Eicholdt.
- 17:15Thank you as always for doing this and we will talk to you in
- 17:18the weeks ahead. Thanks, David.
- 17:20Thanks guys. Always appreciate you.
- 17:22Take care. Go listen to some Beach Boys,
- 17:23buddy. Good to talk to you.
- 17:25There he goes. David Eicholdt, Josh.
- 17:27I'm a Jaffo. Well, here's something you'll
- 17:31like. Tell us.
- 17:32OK, OK. I know where you're going.
- 17:34He's Canadian. Hamilton ON Terrier 6 five 200
- 17:38lbs Played D2 basketball for two years.
- 17:40This last year was his first year at the D1 level at Robert
- 17:43Morris. 11 1/2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 1/2 assists per
- 17:47game. Shot 38% from behind the arc. 65
- 17:53Yeah, All right, Another piece for the back cart, played with
- 17:57obviously fool Garris. So that's the connection, how
- 18:01he's here or how he's on their radar, I would think.
- 18:04And I don't know David, he didn't say.
- 18:06It No, he did. I think we can all read between
- 18:09the lines. Yeah, I think that one.
- 18:11That's a hang in there, you wonder.
- 18:14Is a commitment already happened and they're waiting for
- 18:16something? Yeah, just listening to David.
- 18:19They I mean, when, when McCallum we we all know who was going
- 18:23yeah, but it was like every week 1 would trickle out and they.
- 18:26Well, and we have since he is international.
- 18:29And and that's another layer of this that they have to figure
- 18:32out. Apparently, they realized that
- 18:34yesterday that that could be problematic for some of the
- 18:37international talent that comes to play here.
- 18:39And how are they going to be part of this house settlement,
- 18:41something that wasn't taken into account?
- 18:42Whoops. We'll take a time out.
- 18:45Come back, Jimmy. I'm just going to join us.
- 18:49I don't know what we're going to talk about.
- 18:51Story time. Yeah.
- 18:52Let's do what. Jimmy B that's next.
- 18:54Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 18:56Welcome back. Miller and Condon Iowa Sports
- 18:58Radio Network. Just come Coming up on 1:30 we
- 19:00take you until 2 trends plays of the day still to come.
- 19:03Circus sports sponsor those The drive coming up top of the hour
- 19:07with Heather and Lucas, they take you until 5.
- 19:09Overtime, Iowa at that, at that time.
- 19:14Our next guest is not a California boy.
- 19:16He seems like he would fit though.
- 19:17He's a Pacific Northwest guy. But he seems like I could see
- 19:21with the surfboard. Princeton.
- 19:22I could, I could see you growing up in that part of the country.
- 19:25How are you, Jimmy B? She's real fine, my 409.
- 19:30She's real fine my 409. That's another 409.
- 19:35Look at Beach Boys were the thing, man, you know that?
- 19:38Great to talk to you guys. You know, it's never a pleasure,
- 19:41but I'm always here for you. Ditto right back at you brother.
- 19:47Good to hear from you Jimmy BI want to obviously get into the
- 19:50NBA etcetera. Get your get your take on that.
- 19:53Well, I want to ask you though, over your career, I don't know
- 19:56if you if you have one thing that stanza, obviously he called
- 19:59Jordan's first game as a member of the Bulls.
- 20:02So many broadcasters got their start.
- 20:04So many big names in sports got their start with you.
- 20:07I mean, is, is off the off the beaten path is Mike Pereira was
- 20:13on with you at some point. He was.
- 20:16So what, what, what stands out Empire Sports Network?
- 20:19I mean what, what? What would it be?
- 20:22I think working games on ABC and ESPNI think I think those things
- 20:29stood out to me the the most. And you're right, I did have the
- 20:34very fortunate experiences of working with a lot of different
- 20:38guys who became big time voices in college basketball and
- 20:44college football. But I will tell you this story
- 20:48and you can see it online, but I don't know if you'll remember it
- 20:53was the UMass game against Temple.
- 20:58You're in the background. Oh yeah, you can hear Jim's
- 21:00voice. I called the game on ABC, so
- 21:04it's a buzzer beater and UMass ends up winning.
- 21:10And that is right afterwards. I walked into the media room and
- 21:14that is when John Calipari was up on stage when he was the
- 21:17coach of UMass and John Cheney was in the background and they
- 21:22got into an argument and you can hear John Cheney says I'm going
- 21:27to come up there and kill you. Oh my God, that to me that that
- 21:32was an all timer. An all timer.
- 21:35I just watched the video as you were saying that.
- 21:37It is wild. You can hear Jimmy.
- 21:39B Hey, hey. Hey, hey, hey.
- 21:41With the Jimmy B. Voice.
- 21:43And is that is that you pulling John Cheney from behind?
- 21:48I, I've got, I'm kind of like in the background there and I think
- 21:52I, I think I had a hand on him to get ahold of him.
- 21:55He and I will go way back. He's passed now, of course, but
- 22:00I had a great relationship with John, with John and also with
- 22:05Coach Cal as well. But yeah, I was over in the
- 22:08corner. You really don't see me.
- 22:10Well, I'm not the tallest guy in the world, so you really don't
- 22:13see me. But you did hear me, as Trent
- 22:16just said. Yeah, no doubt about that.
- 22:18That that's awesome. All right.
- 22:20Every time I see on Twitter you're defending Wilt
- 22:22Chamberlain. I mean, every time I know that
- 22:24you don't know the half of these people that are talking NBA and
- 22:28the best players this No, it's this guy.
- 22:30And you're very quick to to come to the defense of Wilt
- 22:33Chamberlain. What is it about him?
- 22:36Jimmy B, You just you love Wilt. Well, it's not a question of
- 22:41loving Wilt. I think it's a question of
- 22:43nobody gives the dude any respect and it's all about MJ
- 22:49and how how great he he was. I mean, you would think that he
- 22:53walks on water. He couldn't even get in past the
- 22:57Detroit Pistons for seven years, Seven years until he could get
- 23:02past Detroit and get into the final.
- 23:05He didn't even get the Washington Wizards to the
- 23:08playoffs when he left the Bulls to go play there.
- 23:11Yeah, but there's that little time between those two periods
- 23:14that weren't bad. Though, well, I understand that.
- 23:16And here's the other thing when I, when I when I bring up
- 23:19Chamberlain against that, they say, well, he only won two
- 23:22titles and Will only won two titles and NJ won six.
- 23:26Well, here's the deal, kids. If you want to talk titles Bill
- 23:30Russell won, 11 include, including eight in a row.
- 23:35So if you're talking titles Bill Russell more than Trump's, what
- 23:40might? Do and didn't Russell Jimmy B
- 23:42didn't he? He never lost the game seven
- 23:45that his team that that he played for participated in?
- 23:49Isn't that a fact? In the Finals, that is
- 23:52absolutely correct, Yes. Yep, that is absolutely true.
- 23:57So, But you got to remember back then there was no free agency
- 24:01and the Celtics had like an All Star game.
- 24:05They did. There's like 15 of those guys
- 24:07that played for Boston. They're all in the Hall of Fame.
- 24:11Jimmy B, We have a lot of new audience members out there.
- 24:15We're now staying. Go to the bathroom.
- 24:17It's time, says Wilt, came up to bring us the story again.
- 24:21Yes, take us to the bathroom, you Wilt Chamberlain.
- 24:24Fill all the new listeners and people maybe that forgot the
- 24:27story. Rehash our memories.
- 24:29Jimmy B. All right, boys, thank you for
- 24:31the opportunity. It's one of the my best stories
- 24:34of all time. I'm in Los Angeles in the mid
- 24:3780s and I'm doing a Lakers game. My broadcast partner is Wes
- 24:42Unseld, former Washington Bullets star, and we're getting
- 24:46ready to do the Lakers and the Bullets and will happen to be at
- 24:51the game. And so, you know, Wes played
- 24:54against him. So he came over and said hello
- 24:56to Wes. Wes introduced him to me.
- 24:59When I shook his hand, my whole arm disappeared.
- 25:02That's how big his hands were. Great guy.
- 25:05So he said afterwards, you guys want to come up to the house,
- 25:09have a couple cold ones that we said, yeah, sure, yeah, we could
- 25:13do that because we weren't flying out until noon the next
- 25:16day. We were headed to Phoenix, but
- 25:18we didn't play for two days, so we had plenty of time.
- 25:22It wasn't like we had. And remember back then there
- 25:25were no charter flights. We were flying commercial, so
- 25:29back. So the games over, Lakers win,
- 25:32Wilt says I'll have a car for you Outback.
- 25:35So we walk Outback. There's a guy with a side.
- 25:37Of course, my name is not on it. It says Wes Unsil.
- 25:41And we hop in the car and we head up to Wilts House.
- 25:44Guys, it's up on top of a mountain looking out over Los
- 25:49Angeles and the ocean. If you've ever seen it, it was
- 25:54absolutely spectacular for how it was built and designed.
- 25:59And you can look it up online if you type in Wilt Chamberlain's
- 26:03house. And then you can type in how
- 26:05they how the people who had obviously purchased it later up
- 26:09upgraded it. But back then it was something
- 26:12else. 30 to 40 foot ceilings were sitting down in this little
- 26:17seating area relaxing. There's about 5 or 6 of us
- 26:20that's all had a couple beers and I said to well, hey, can I,
- 26:25I need to use the head. Oh right down that hall.
- 26:28So I get up, I go down the hall, I walk into the bathroom.
- 26:34Now, did I tell you that it was 30 to 40 foot ceiling?
- 26:38That the house was built specifically for Wilt.
- 26:41And you're not the part. You're not the tallest guy
- 26:43that's ever walked. I'm not the tallest guy.
- 26:46There is a step stool off to the side.
- 26:50I had to stand on the step stool to get high enough to pee into
- 26:55Wilt Chamberlain's toilet. Just the fact you peed into his
- 26:58toilet, I mean, how many people can legitimately say that?
- 27:03That's awesome. So how do you see, how do you
- 27:06see the remainder of these final?
- 27:07Are we going to get a final Jimmy B?
- 27:09Is this going to be entertaining or is OK C just so much better
- 27:12that you don't give this much hope to get past maybe 6 at the
- 27:16most, but a Game 7 is very unlikely.
- 27:19Where are you on this final? I do have OK C winning it.
- 27:24However. I really like the Pacers
- 27:26tonight. They're getting 5 1/2 for you.
- 27:29Yeah, yeah, 5 1/2 tonight. They're getting it on their
- 27:32homecourt. Here's the thing in the NBA guys
- 27:36is that the stars generally show up either home or on the road
- 27:42because they're they're just built different.
- 27:44But the role players struggle more on the road than they do at
- 27:49home. So I look for the Pacer Rd. role
- 27:54players to play much better in tonight's game than they did in
- 27:59Game 2. I think a lot of people have
- 28:01forgotten about game one where Indiana came back from an 18
- 28:06point deficit and found a way to win the game when Halliburton
- 28:09hit that shot. So I think they just watched
- 28:13Game 2 and they saw the destruction that took place.
- 28:17Well, the destruction took place a Pacers were terrible.
- 28:20Halliburton did not have a very good game at all and for the
- 28:24Pacers to be successful tonight, Hallie has to score 20 to 25 and
- 28:30have 11:50 assists. Pascal Siakam has got to put
- 28:34points up tonight around 25 and then the rest will take care of
- 28:38itself. Jimmy B, you're down there in
- 28:41Arizona. We saw Arizona State football
- 28:43take a big step forward last year and had Texas on the ropes
- 28:46in the College Football Playoff. Is there sustainability there?
- 28:50Fill us in for the Iowa State and the Big 12 fans here in our
- 28:53audience. Is Arizona State football a
- 28:56thing that has staying power or we see this happen a lot?
- 28:59It was a one year blip. Everything came together.
- 29:02Right. It'll have staying power through
- 29:04this year. And the reason is, is the
- 29:06quarterback Sam Levitt, he is a Heisman Trophy candidate as long
- 29:11as they can keep him upright. They upgraded on the offense and
- 29:15defensive line as well. And they do have some dudes that
- 29:20can play. The one thing that they will not
- 29:23have is Cam Scataboo, the running back who was drafted in
- 29:28the third round by the New York Giants.
- 29:30He will be an excellent NFL running back.
- 29:33But as you guys saw, he was dominant against Iowa State.
- 29:37Then when they got and played Texas, he had a monster game
- 29:41against the Longhorns. And if you talk to Sun Devil
- 29:45fans, they're still screaming about the calls that did not
- 29:48take place, where they thought ASU should have beaten Texas.
- 29:53But we all know it. Yeah, it was a great game,
- 29:56absolutely tremendous college football game.
- 30:00Jimmy B, Good to catch up with you brother.
- 30:01What are you still doing? Radio part time?
- 30:03What are you doing in in the Phoenix area?
- 30:07ESPN six 20s where you can find me guys.
- 30:10That's it. And I I'm, I'm so stupid.
- 30:13I really am. Of course you guys have known
- 30:15that ever since you've known me, but I just can't walk away.
- 30:20I've tried. You got all the money in the
- 30:21world. You're America's guest.
- 30:25You've got short arms whenever the bill comes.
- 30:27That's what I remember. But that's what we love about
- 30:29you, Jimmy B. Maybe we do love one of the many
- 30:32things. I love you guys.
- 30:33I love you guys. Thanks for having me.
- 30:35Yeah. Good to catch up with you, bro.
- 30:36We'll do it again. Thanks, Jimmy.
- 30:38Bye. Good to talk to Jimmy B.
- 30:40One-of-a-kind. Yes, he is just America's guest.
- 30:45He is? Yeah.
- 30:46He absolutely. But when was he here?
- 30:48I don't know. A couple, three years ago, he
- 30:50was on in the air with us. I don't know, somebody dropped
- 30:53him off. Yep.
- 30:55Hey, you got Uber on your app. I I don't have a ride.
- 30:58Well, you know, you can get it, Jim.
- 31:00Everybody can. He left his phone back in the
- 31:02hotel, probably well for that reason.
- 31:04Unbelievable, but that's how he that's how he rolls.
- 31:07He's a he was a character. He was and still the greatest
- 31:12walk off that I've ever seen. I swear to God.
- 31:17He we worked till 6:00. We were doing 3 till six or four
- 31:21to seven, whatever it was. And at the end of the show, it
- 31:25was the Friday before Cyhawk. Well, Jimmy, final couple of
- 31:28minutes. How do you see it?
- 31:31Well, it's going to be a real tight game, low scoring game.
- 31:33Cole Netten's going to hit a last second field goal and Iowa
- 31:36State's going to win. All right, have a good weekend,
- 31:39buddy, Enjoy the game, blah, blah, blah.
- 31:42And then comes Monday and he gets to be noon and he gets to
- 31:47be 1. Where's Princeton?
- 31:49And he's he can't get a hold of him on his phone.
- 31:51He just quit and left the state and and never came back and
- 31:56never told his soul. And then ended up in Little
- 31:59Rock. And ended up in Little Rock
- 32:00running a station in a little, but didn't tell us.
- 32:05Jimmy B, one of one. He really is.
- 32:09We'll take a time out. How did you do on your plays
- 32:11yesterday? Yesterday, another profitable
- 32:13day. I know he had a couple of four
- 32:15and one. Yeah.
- 32:16So that was on top of a three and or four and Gordo.
- 32:19So that's that's 81 where I come from.
- 32:21Pressures on, Feeling the pressure now.
- 32:24What are the Cubs doing? They were getting crushed.
- 32:26Brown was getting just teed off 61.
- 32:30They're not doing well. They are the Cardinals underway.
- 32:32They should they're. Up 1 Nothing.
- 32:34They're up 1 nothing as they try to salvage one from the hottest
- 32:37team in the major leagues. That's weird to say.
- 32:40It is the Toronto Blue Jays. The Twins got crushed last
- 32:44night, didn't they? Yeah, they killed Texas.
- 32:47The Rangers, 16 to 4. Does that mean their bats are
- 32:49woken up or is it just because they're playing the twins?
- 32:51Well, there was also position players in the game.
- 32:54Over there, yeah, we'll take your time out.
- 32:56Come back. Trent's plays of the day, Circus
- 32:58sports sponsor those Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 33:01Network final segment here on a Wednesday.
- 33:04David Kaplan tomorrow, if you missed KAPI today, so did we.
- 33:08We'll get KAPI tomorrow. His station had an event in
- 33:11Chicago, so he'll push back to tomorrow when he will join me as
- 33:14Trent is off tomorrow. Are you going to join me for the
- 33:17first segment, recap the game and to do baseball or whatever
- 33:20comes up between now and then? A recap in the first segment of
- 33:23the program. But Cappy will be with me
- 33:25tomorrow at the 1:00 Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors.
- 33:29Cappy, before you get into your plays, I made a couple of plays
- 33:32yesterday. Yeah, I shouldn't have post 830
- 33:36feeling pretty good about my my read of the NFL.
- 33:39So I bet 2 quarterbacks to be the Most Valuable Player.
- 33:42Two quarterbacks to be MVP. Two at both decent odds.
- 33:45I hope Bo Knicks was not one. He is.
- 33:47Oh, no, he's 40 to 1, Kenny. Yeah.
- 33:50Denver's going to be good. Denver's going to be really
- 33:52good, OK? Denver's going to be a major
- 33:55threat in the AFC. But Nick has hit his apex
- 33:58though. Doesn't matter, he's surrounded
- 34:00by. He's going to throw how many
- 34:01touchdowns? 30 That's going to get an 3535.
- 34:08OK, what else did you smoke? The usual, but I stayed in the
- 34:15division. Patrick, Behold.
- 34:17No. Oh, no.
- 34:18No, no, no, no. Yep.
- 34:19Yep, Yep, Yep. Herbert at 25 to 1.
- 34:22OK, so I mean, things must be going well, huh?
- 34:26I mean, you're just. Lighting money, I'm seeing it
- 34:28well. I'm seeing it very well.
- 34:31I think both of those two AFC West teams, I especially like
- 34:35Denver. They're my team.
- 34:37If you've just joined the program and you're not aware,
- 34:40I'm a Broncos fan, but I legitimately think that they can
- 34:45do it this year. And I mean, do it like
- 34:47represent, like go a long way. Be a player in the AFC with
- 34:51Bogniks. Yes, yes.
- 34:54Not Bogniks. Weeks 1-2 and three Bogniks from
- 34:57that point forward. This guy's got a cannon attached
- 35:00to his right shoulder. He improved immensely.
- 35:02He did. Ingram, the tight end, comes
- 35:05over from Jacksonville. They just signed Dobbins.
- 35:07The running back drafted RJ Harvey, who we both loved last
- 35:10year. SD May is, how do you say his
- 35:13name? The running back from Notre
- 35:14Dame, their offensive line is solid.
- 35:16Defensive line's solid. Sir Tan is all pro back there,
- 35:19brought over Hofanga from San Francisco, brought over Greenlaw
- 35:23from San Francisco. They're loaded, loaded.
- 35:28And if it wasn't for it, I'm going to say a flute play
- 35:30because it was a hell of a play. At the block field goal in
- 35:32Kansas City at Arrowhead, I made a hell of a play.
- 35:37Denver's a factor. I don't think I'm, I don't think
- 35:40I'm nuts more. Than Baltimore, Well, they're
- 35:44not to play all of those. Teams to get there.
- 35:46Don't forget they'll only have to take care of a couple.
- 35:48Sure, Buffalo's legit, Baltimore's legit.
- 35:51I agree. With you, Kansas City's legit.
- 35:52I think so, but don't one of these years they have to.
- 35:56And I get it. It's the last.
- 35:57Saddle up for one more ride, right?
- 35:59This. Let's go out with a bang.
- 36:01This is it for Kelsey. They're going to make
- 36:04significant changes coming up here.
- 36:07There will be a year to fate, Kansas.
- 36:09City and I think it's this year, but I thought it was last year
- 36:12and the year before and the year before to be fair.
- 36:13Yes, and that is true. I'm not ready to hop on them.
- 36:17Bandwagon with you and not quite as bullish as you are ever made
- 36:21the. Playoffs last year.
- 36:23And that's what they are. They're a nice 10 and 17.
- 36:26That gets you in. Gets you in.
- 36:28Yeah, don't have to be all the other six teams to get in
- 36:30you're. Probably gonna have to win three
- 36:32on the road though at 10:00 and 7:00.
- 36:33Maybe. Maybe.
- 36:34I don't see that team equipped to.
- 36:35Do that you don't think they can win the West?
- 36:37No. Their second choice?
- 36:39Right. But the first choice is the
- 36:41first choice. Those Chiefs.
- 36:42Yeah, that's where I keep going. So Herbert Nicks to win MVP.
- 36:50And Denver to win the Super Bowl.
- 36:52Take a look back, have we seen many guys come out of nowhere to
- 36:55win MVPS in the NFL lately? Well, it's not like Bo Nicks is
- 36:59coming out of nowhere. And would be.
- 37:00Coming out of finish second is Rookie of the Year.
- 37:02Don't forget. Sure.
- 37:04But that would be coming out of nowhere to win an MVP.
- 37:06That ascension doesn't normally happen like that.
- 37:09Now I wish you were at the house last night.
- 37:13No, no, no, because I would have been partaken of that.
- 37:15I would have been. You see what happens then and
- 37:17it's not good for this guy that's.
- 37:19Funny. Alright, let's make some place.
- 37:21I wiggy I got one in the WNBA. Give me the.
- 37:24Mercury, you hit your WNBA pick last night.
- 37:26Course. I'm Mr. W.
- 37:28Know what? To be fair, since we usually
- 37:29crush your Angel, Reese had a really good game.
- 37:31She did? Yeah.
- 37:31Yes, good for her. Yes, good bounce back.
- 37:33Yeah, I'm laying it with the Thunder tonight.
- 37:36I I can't find an angle. I.
- 37:38Hope you lose this. Back.
- 37:39I hope I do too. I really do.
- 37:41I hope I lose it out right. The Pacers win this game and
- 37:46give us something 2IN baseball boy.
- 37:48Twins. Yesterday was ugly.
- 37:50Festa really struggled out in Sacramento his last time out.
- 37:53He's back on there. I'm going to take the Rangers.
- 37:55Plus the 1:30. I was really surprised this one.
- 37:58First pitch coming up here in about 45 minutes.
- 38:01Arizona, Seattle woo's been really good.
- 38:04It's even money. You can get straight up even
- 38:07odds against an Arizona team that.
- 38:09They're playing better this week.
- 38:12This week, yeah. What, a couple in a row?
- 38:14Yeah, after losing what, four in a row before that?
- 38:16Well, they they they had a closed door meeting that those
- 38:20work apparently. So far so good.
- 38:23And a couple of just golf thoughts.
- 38:25I'm going to play John Rahm, as I said, I'm going to have Harris
- 38:28English because you have to because.
- 38:29Everybody else is. Everybody in the world of some
- 38:33top 20s. I like Matsyama.
- 38:35A lot of the metrics that I looked at this week definitely
- 38:38point his direction. That Hideki probably needs to be
- 38:41certainly in there. I got a top 20 on him.
- 38:43What was the price that I got BA Matsyama?
- 38:46There it is plus 221 of my favorites though.
- 38:49Top debutant. We talk about that all the time
- 38:51with the Masters. Ben Griffin, Top debutante +36.
- 38:55That's a really good price. It is, but it's the shortest
- 38:58price by far of all the guys making their debuts.
- 39:01All right, the drive is coming up next.
- 39:02Trent. We'll talk to you in segment #1
- 39:04and then you'll leave me to navigate the final hour and a
- 39:08half. That'll be tomorrow, but the
- 39:09drive is coming up next. We're Miller and Condon.
- 39:12Trent and I talk sports with you every Monday through Friday from
- 39:15noon to two on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
