- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, we want to get into why you cheated death, 877-937-1047,
- 0:05Speaker 1: how you cheated death, because.
- 0:08Speaker 2: There's this crazy story. I was just reading the whole
- 0:09Speaker 2: story right now about why she was on death row.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Yeah, Christina Pike, who is, I guess, the first female
- 0:16Speaker 3: to get the death penalty or actually be executed in
- 0:20Speaker 3: 200 years in Tennessee. So they do it by injection there,
- 0:23Speaker 3: and they did two injections. It didn't work. She's still
- 0:25Speaker 3: alive in the hospital.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And they said if they give you an injection and
- 0:29Speaker 1: you don't die, the law says they have to give
- 0:31Speaker 1: you a second one.
- 0:33Speaker 2: But they don't have the law. What happens if the
- 0:35Speaker 2: second one doesn't take?
- 0:36Speaker 3: I imagine now lawsuits forever.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And they said what I was just reading right now
- 0:39Speaker 1: is that they gave her the second injection, and then
- 0:41Speaker 1: it was like two hours later, and they could hear
- 0:43Speaker 1: her snoring in the other room.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Yeah, she was like, just wait.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So she so far has cheated death.
- 0:48Speaker 2: We want to know how you cheated death, Mel.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Hi, guys.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Good morning.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Good morning. How did you cheat death?
- 0:57Speaker 4: Okay, so mine is, I guess I cheated death. So
- 1:00Speaker 4: when I was 14 years old, I'm 36 now. When
- 1:03Speaker 4: I was 14, me and my cousin were hanging out.
- 1:05Speaker 4: We're two older boys. Probably shouldn't have been. And we
- 1:08Speaker 4: went swimming at an abandoned house. So we're swimming in
- 1:11Speaker 4: the pool, hanging out, having a good time. And all
- 1:14Speaker 4: of a sudden, I'm pulled by my hair up out
- 1:16Speaker 4: of the pool, and there's a gun to my head. Um,
- 1:20Speaker 4: and I see the boys are being like taken away.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Me and my cousin were in our bikinis and, you know,
- 1:23Speaker 4: we're being taken away. So they, they break down the door,
- 1:26Speaker 4: put us into this house. Um, you know, keep telling us,
- 1:28Speaker 4: don't look at us, don't look at us, whatever. So
- 1:30Speaker 4: they have the answer ahead. Um, finally, I don't know
- 1:33Speaker 4: how much time passed, but they had let us upstairs. Um,
- 1:35Speaker 4: and they were trying to pull off our jewelry the
- 1:36Speaker 4: whole time, like while we were going upstairs and the, um,
- 1:39Speaker 4: there's four guys in the room with us, they duct
- 1:41Speaker 4: taped me and my cousin tied us up. Um, and
- 1:44Speaker 4: we like, we were begging, you know, pleading, like, please
- 1:47Speaker 4: don't hurt us. And, you know, whatever, but we can
- 1:49Speaker 4: hear the boys like screaming in the other rooms and
- 1:51Speaker 4: like things being knocked around. Um, and then, so we
- 1:55Speaker 4: tried to like make family conversation. Well, eventually these guys
- 1:58Speaker 4: like almost like trusted us and, um, they gave us
- 2:01Speaker 4: like nicknames, like they called me precious and like her
- 2:03Speaker 4: beautiful and whatever.
- 2:04Speaker 5: But anyway, so, um, they.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Were about to leave again. This was like probably four
- 2:07Speaker 4: hours of this happening. Um, and they had left us
- 2:10Speaker 4: a few times, but they're like, okay, we're going to leave.
- 2:12Speaker 4: But if you get up, we're going to shoot you.
- 2:14Speaker 4: And we're like, okay, so we're crying and, and we hear, like,
- 2:17Speaker 4: the cars speed off. They stole both of our cars
- 2:19Speaker 4: that we had. So we get up, and my cousin, like,
- 2:22Speaker 4: I'm begging her, don't get up, don't get up, because
- 2:23Speaker 4: I think the guys are still in the house.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So she gets up.
- 2:26Speaker 4: We cut our tape off with, like, a broken, like,
- 2:29Speaker 4: electrical cord cover. So we're running through the house trying
- 2:32Speaker 4: to find the guys. There's blood everywhere. We find one
- 2:35Speaker 4: of the guys in the bathroom where there's literally blood
- 2:37Speaker 4: covering the walls, the toilet, everything, and she runs down
- 2:41Speaker 4: to find the guy that she was with, We could
- 2:43Speaker 4: not find him anywhere, and we hear moaning. They put
- 2:46Speaker 4: him underneath the carpet, like, under the foam, under everything.
- 2:50Speaker 4: He had a phone charger tied around his neck with
- 2:52Speaker 4: his shirt. He was soaked in blood, like, literally almost, like,
- 2:55Speaker 4: close to death. We didn't have our cell phones. They
- 2:57Speaker 4: stole our cell phones, our purses, everything. So we, like,
- 3:01Speaker 4: went to the backyard of this house, hopped the fence,
- 3:03Speaker 4: ran through neighborhoods until we found one that, like, looked
- 3:05Speaker 4: okay because this was in, like, Lower Buckeye. We knocked
- 3:08Speaker 4: on doors. We were banging on doors, help us, help us.
- 3:11Speaker 4: And then by the fourth door we got to, the
- 3:13Speaker 4: first guy had opened his garage. We didn't even say anything.
- 3:15Speaker 4: We ran into his garage screaming. All four of us,
- 3:18Speaker 4: bloody broken, ran into the garage and called 911. The
- 3:22Speaker 4: cops came and took our statements. And then we went
- 3:24Speaker 4: home with our parents. I had severe PTSD from it
- 3:27Speaker 4: for a long time. And then that was it. They
- 3:30Speaker 4: never caught the guys. They saw someone using a credit
- 3:33Speaker 4: card one time but never caught them.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Wow.
- 3:37Speaker 2: My goodness.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Scary stuff.
- 3:39Speaker 3: If it was a movie?
- 3:41Speaker 2: The fourth house you go into is actually the guys
- 3:43Speaker 2: that did it.
- 3:43Speaker 6: I know.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And they go, welcome.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Oh, guys, that would be the worst, right?
- 3:46Speaker 2: They're back.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Good Lord.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Wow, Mel, that is the craziest story. That is bizarre.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it was very, very scary.
- 3:53Speaker 3: You never crashed a backyard again, I bet.
- 3:56Speaker 4: No, we never did. I actually probably never broke the
- 3:59Speaker 4: law after that or did anything sketchy.
- 4:01Speaker 5: So, yeah.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Holy smokes.
- 4:03Speaker 7: Okay, Mel.
- 4:03Speaker 8: I'm glad you're alive.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Hold on the line, Mel. That's a crazy story. How
- 4:06Speaker 2: did you cheat death? Let us know.
- 4:08Speaker 1: 877-937-1047. We'll get more calls after Team Impala.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Big story in the.
- 4:16Speaker 1: News of this woman who cheated death. She's on death row.
- 4:20Speaker 1: They gave her the lethal injection twice and she's still alive.
- 4:24Speaker 1: So we just kind of thought we'd do a quick
- 4:26Speaker 1: round of how did you cheat death? We just talked
- 4:28Speaker 1: to Mel. Her story was insane. Tanisha, I hear you
- 4:31Speaker 1: have a crazy story too.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Yeah, it doesn't top, Mel. That was crazy. But yeah,
- 4:37Speaker 5: so when I was about eight years old, I went
- 4:40Speaker 5: to Six Flags with some family friends. And I had
- 4:44Speaker 5: gotten on a roller coaster. And because I was so little,
- 4:48Speaker 5: they put me in between a couple, an older couple.
- 4:51Speaker 5: And it was like one of those roller coasters where
- 4:54Speaker 5: the latch comes over your head. And so they pulled
- 4:58Speaker 5: it down and it didn't lock. But at this point
- 5:01Speaker 5: in time, the guy thought it had locked and he
- 5:03Speaker 5: went around and then they were trying to flag the
- 5:06Speaker 5: guy down like, hey, her thing didn't lock, her thing
- 5:08Speaker 5: didn't lock. And it was like.
- 5:10Speaker 7: Just too late.
- 5:11Speaker 5: And the roller coaster took off. And you just see
- 5:13Speaker 5: this couple kind of like intertwine their arms around my
- 5:17Speaker 5: latch over top. And the roller coaster just takes off.
- 5:21Speaker 5: So the entire time, they're, like, holding on to the
- 5:24Speaker 5: straps over my chest, and I'm holding on to theirs
- 5:27Speaker 5: and just, like, praying for dear life the entire time
- 5:30Speaker 5: of the roller coaster. And I'm just like, oh, my God,
- 5:32Speaker 5: just please let me get through this. I promise to
- 5:34Speaker 5: God that I'm going to be.
- 5:35Speaker 8: A straight-A student, everything. Just get me through it.
- 5:38Speaker 5: Get me through it. I'm praying. I'm crying. And by
- 5:41Speaker 5: the time the roller coaster is off, like, the family is, like,
- 5:44Speaker 5: telling them, like, hey, you guys need to do a
- 5:46Speaker 5: better check on these things. Her thing wasn't locked. And
- 5:49Speaker 5: they're like, So right after that, like, they literally had
- 5:53Speaker 5: to close the roller coaster down because my thing was
- 5:55Speaker 5: not locking.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I wonder if it's that roller coaster that's in the news.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Do you see that one? They closed one down. No,
- 6:00Speaker 2: it's shut down.
- 6:00Speaker 3: They're not.
- 6:01Speaker 6: Yeah, it's no longer around.
- 6:04Speaker 2: But they shut it down recently. So I wonder if
- 6:07Speaker 2: it was the one Tanisha was on.
- 6:08Speaker 5: The same way. I don't even remember. It was so
- 6:09Speaker 5: long ago. So I don't remember exactly the name of it.
- 6:12Speaker 5: But I was like, oh, my God. So after that
- 6:14Speaker 5: and then Final Destination came out with that roller coaster movie.
- 6:17Speaker 5: And I was like, oh, my God, that's so could
- 6:18Speaker 5: have been me. So I've just been waiting, like, okay,
- 6:21Speaker 5: am I seeing any signs out there?
- 6:23Speaker 3: Question, did you become a straight-A student?
- 6:25Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Okay, good.
- 6:27Speaker 3: All right, because you can't bargain and then don't come
- 6:30Speaker 3: up with it.
- 6:31Speaker 5: Oh, no, definitely straight-A student.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Thanks, Anisha. Thanks for calling in.
- 6:36Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Judith. Judith? Yes. How did you cheat death? Hi.
- 6:43Speaker 7: Hi, John T.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Hi, everybody.
- 6:45Speaker 7: I was working at a respiratory therapist at an office.
- 6:49Speaker 7: I was all alone in my office. Always left out
- 6:53Speaker 7: of there after work at the same time. And I
- 6:57Speaker 7: got a phone call from my husband. He's my ex-husband now.
- 7:00Speaker 7: And I took the call. So I was late. So
- 7:03Speaker 7: I was walking really fast to my bus stop. And
- 7:07Speaker 7: when I got there, there was Fire department everywhere. Police
- 7:11Speaker 7: cars everywhere. My bus stop. Somebody hit the curb, went
- 7:16Speaker 7: over the curb, and crashed into the actual bus stop.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Oh, man. That's called something. It would have been there. Peyton,
- 7:23Speaker 2: did you say bring up the.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Burnt toast theory?
- 7:26Speaker 6: The burnt toast theory, yeah. When one minor inconvenience offsets
- 7:31Speaker 6: a major inconvenience.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Yeah, wow. Way to go.
- 7:34Speaker 7: And they couldn't even get him. out of the car
- 7:36Speaker 7: he was dead they.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Couldn't get him.
- 7:39Speaker 7: Out of the car right at the actual bus stop
- 7:43Speaker 7: pole i was would have been standing there and this
- 7:46Speaker 7: was before cell phones you know there were in the
- 7:49Speaker 7: call i took at the actual office which if i
- 7:53Speaker 7: wouldn't have taken it yeah wow.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Well thanks i'm glad you're alive i'm glad you're still
- 7:59Speaker 1: here thank you uh carrie how did you cheat death.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Are you there?
- 8:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Hi. Okay.
- 8:09Speaker 9: So, I mean, mine's not as scary, but I have
- 8:15Speaker 9: the bone cancer twice, then breast cancer, then three pulmonary embolism,
- 8:23Speaker 9: sepsis twice, you name it. I've I've kicked its ass.
- 8:30Speaker 7: Oh, but sorry.
- 8:30Speaker 3: That's okay. You can say that. You're like a walking miracle.
- 8:37Speaker 9: I really kind of am. So yeah, the breast cancer
- 8:42Speaker 9: came from the radiation scatter from my bone cancer.
- 8:46Speaker 3: So my cancer gave me cancer.
- 8:46Speaker 9: But I'm about to turn 47 on Monday and I
- 8:47Speaker 9: have two beautiful boys. After all of that, they didn't
- 8:58Speaker 9: think I was even going to be able to have kids.
- 9:00Speaker 9: So I feel like I am the luckiest.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Person in this world.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Did you do something to cure yourself? Did you change
- 9:08Speaker 1: your diet? Did you exercise? Was there something you did.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Or just happened?
- 9:12Speaker 9: Well, I was a little girl when I had the
- 9:15Speaker 9: bone cancer twice. I only had a 15% chance of
- 9:19Speaker 9: making it. And back then, they didn't do like six.
- 9:25Speaker 9: you know, sessions of chemo they did. I went in
- 9:28Speaker 9: every three weeks for almost two years and did three
- 9:32Speaker 9: different chemos, um, and radiation. So I was like a
- 9:36Speaker 9: skeleton and, but my dad and mom, they didn't let
- 9:39Speaker 9: me know how sick I was. Um, and that's huge. Um,
- 9:44Speaker 9: so they're awesome. So I, I knew I was sick,
- 9:49Speaker 9: obviously I'm puking and, you know, skin and bones and
- 9:52Speaker 9: I have no hair and Literally looked like a skeleton,
- 9:55Speaker 9: but I still played softball, and my dad was my coach,
- 9:58Speaker 9: and parents would yell at him. like how dare you
- 10:01Speaker 9: and he's like you know he didn't know if I
- 10:04Speaker 9: was gonna you know make it and I loved it
- 10:06Speaker 9: and he let me and so they they got me
- 10:10Speaker 9: through it and then and then I got myself through
- 10:14Speaker 9: everything else just I guess grew up strong.
- 10:19Speaker 2: So Wow, Kari, thank you so much.
- 10:21Speaker 3: That was inspiring.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Yeah, very inspiring. I'm glad you called. I'm glad you, yeah,
- 10:25Speaker 2: thank you.
- 10:26Speaker 9: Oh, thank you.
- 10:27Speaker 2: You survived and you listened to us. I love that.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Heck yeah. I bet you appreciate every day, every moment
- 10:34Speaker 3: of every day, I'm sure.
- 10:35Speaker 9: Oh, my God, yes. Oh, my God, yes. Every day
- 10:40Speaker 9: I wake up and see them.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I bet. Thank you for listening, Kari.
- 10:45Speaker 9: No problem.
- 10:48Speaker 2: This is going to be random. I'm going to completely
- 10:50Speaker 2: shift gears for one second. Pilar. Yes, hi. Hi. What
- 10:54Speaker 2: are you calling about?
- 10:55Speaker 8: So I started Googling about large clamshells.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Oh, because John Jay has two clamshells.
- 11:06Speaker 8: Yeah, he's willing to sell, but I'm not into buying.
- 11:09Speaker 8: But I just wanted to find what was the largest
- 11:12Speaker 8: clamshell ever found.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And what did you find?
- 11:15Speaker 8: And I sent you the info, but I got to
- 11:17Speaker 8: put you on speaker because I don't remember what it said.
- 11:21Speaker 1: By the way, let me just give a little backstory.
- 11:23Speaker 1: My mother-in-law, when she passed away, my wife Blake and I,
- 11:27Speaker 1: or Blake, inherited these massive clamshells that she has that
- 11:32Speaker 1: she got like in the 60s. And I believe what
- 11:36Speaker 1: I've been told is they're illegal and they're humongous and
- 11:39Speaker 1: they weigh like 300 pounds. Like you can't move these things.
- 11:42Speaker 1: It's so hard to move them.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So go ahead, Pilar. Put me on speakerphone. Let me see.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Let me know if you find a price.
- 11:47Speaker 8: So the one that I Googled says that it's 750
- 11:52Speaker 8: pounds off of Japan in 1956.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Oh, that's probably where she got it. Any idea what
- 12:00Speaker 3: they're worth on the, I don't know, what the underground
- 12:04Speaker 3: clamshell market is?
- 12:06Speaker 8: That one I did not Google, but I just thought
- 12:09Speaker 8: it was interesting info.
- 12:11Speaker 1: You know how if you see a clamshell, like, in
- 12:12Speaker 1: a store, even if it's a small one, it's all
- 12:14Speaker 1: bright and shiny and polished?
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yeah. These aren't. These are humongous. Like, they were just
- 12:18Speaker 2: found and dried out. Like, they look like if you had.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Them and you did do that polishing thing, that they'd
- 12:23Speaker 1: be worth gazillions and they would be beautiful.
- 12:25Speaker 6: Are they, like, symmetrical?
- 12:27Speaker 3: What does that mean?
- 12:29Speaker 6: Like, do they look exactly the same?
- 12:31Speaker 1: Yeah, like, they look like it's one clam, but they're apart.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Like you could put it on and be.
- 12:35Speaker 8: I think we need a picture.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Like a split, like a split clamshell. Like the clam
- 12:40Speaker 3: came out. Yeah, there's a giant. It's open.
- 12:44Speaker 1: They're not attached, but they would be on top of
- 12:46Speaker 1: each other and they're humongous.
- 12:47Speaker 6: Because when I think of clamshell, I literally think of
- 12:49Speaker 6: like Ariel's grotto, like her sitting in a big clamshell
- 12:54Speaker 6: with like, I don't know. I'm like trying to see, like,
- 12:57Speaker 6: do they look like real clamshells or do they look
- 12:59Speaker 6: like cartoon clamshells?
- 13:01Speaker 10: According to the internet, John Jay, you could be sitting
- 13:03Speaker 10: on something that's worth about $ 3, 000 to $ 10, 000.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Huh.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Oh, well, anyone wants to do it.
- 13:09Speaker 8: But also maybe jail time, right?
- 13:10Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 13:11Speaker 2: What's the rule of that?
- 13:12Speaker 3: There's that.
- 13:13Speaker 1: If you inherit something that's illegal, I mean, what the heck?
- 13:15Speaker 1: I can't go to prison for that. It's not my fault.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I'm not real sure about the rules there.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Like if I inherited a bunch of cocaine, do I
- 13:23Speaker 1: get in trouble for that?
- 13:25Speaker 2: If I inherited a stolen... Picasso. Uh-huh. Am I in
- 13:29Speaker 2: trouble for that? I didn't know it was Stone Pot.
- 13:31Speaker 10: Okay, according to the Google, regarding legality, the answer sort
- 13:34Speaker 10: of depends entirely on where you live and when the
- 13:37Speaker 10: shell was harvested. So since it was way back in
- 13:40Speaker 10: the day, probably wasn't illegal at the time, I would
- 13:43Speaker 10: think you'd be in the clear.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I also don't know how Blake's mom got it because
- 13:46Speaker 1: she weighed about 45 pounds.
- 13:47Speaker 3: I don't know how she carried this.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Thing out of the water in a backpack. I don't
- 13:51Speaker 1: know where she got it. But, Pilar, thank you for
- 13:53Speaker 1: that investigation. Thank you for calling in.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Yeah, no problem.
