- 1:44Speaker 3: you ever did. Oh my god, I love you. My
- 1:47Speaker 3: favorite is New York story.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Of my favorite.
- 1:50Speaker 3: You said you were going to say four words.
- 1:52Speaker 5: Okay, So I know that people hated like actors, actresses,
- 1:57Speaker 5: Comedians hate when when somebody come out something tries to
- 2:00Speaker 5: like give.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Them their movie or they do. They usually don't you
- 2:05Speaker 3: don't hate it and like it.
- 2:06Speaker 7: Well, yeah, they do usually fuck it up, But that
- 2:08Speaker 7: doesn't mean we don't like it. When people come up and.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Do somebody else's bit and go that guy is funny.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Why can't you do what they do? I'm like, yeah,
- 2:15Speaker 1: he's great.
- 2:17Speaker 4: So well, I don't want to fuck it up.
- 2:19Speaker 3: So I'm gonna give you four words okay from.
- 2:22Speaker 5: From your sorry Albanian, Anthony, Dutch and seasick.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So you know what sick? Yes, I know exactly what
- 2:29Speaker 1: they are.
- 2:30Speaker 7: Albanian perfect, I know exactly the Abanian do you cross?
- 2:34Speaker 7: Someone said the last time Anthony is like my friend
- 2:39Speaker 7: Anthony whose father would be like, Anthony, get up here,
- 2:42Speaker 7: and we all knew he was gonna get his ask kick,
- 2:44Speaker 7: but Anthony didn't. And then Dutchess the word fucked fucking
- 2:48Speaker 7: Yankee STOOPI they're all like Dutch words. And then seasick
- 2:51Speaker 7: is the Jews when they first got off and they
- 2:54Speaker 7: get off from Ellis Islands, they still a little their
- 2:56Speaker 7: stomach is a little queasy in.
- 2:57Speaker 3: His rock.
- 3:01Speaker 5: When they say that the fuck is a Dutch word,
- 3:03Speaker 5: and Yankee is a Dutch word. So when you say
- 3:05Speaker 5: fucking Yankees, just picking Dutch, Oh.
- 3:07Speaker 3: My god, that's funny.
- 3:10Speaker 7: And the worst part was a couple of people, uh comments.
- 3:13Speaker 7: Of course, when you had comments after what I did it,
- 3:15Speaker 7: they're like, actually the word fuck was originally Scandinavian. Then
- 3:21Speaker 7: it went to Holland. I was like, whatever it got
- 3:23Speaker 7: to America from Holland so infuriated.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 3:27Speaker 5: So let me ask you a question as far. I mean,
- 3:29Speaker 5: we're New Yorkers and I loved it. As a New Yorker.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I totally got it and understood what it had.
- 3:36Speaker 5: And people on the East Coast, what did people like
- 3:38Speaker 5: and let's just say in Middle America, like respond to
- 3:41Speaker 5: what the way we did.
- 3:42Speaker 1: It, because no, they didn't. They didn't. They didn't. They didn't.
- 3:46Speaker 7: They didn't love it. You know, they're like like the
- 3:48Speaker 7: ones that moved here. I guess liked it, but in
- 3:50Speaker 7: general it was not for them, you.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Know what I mean.
- 3:52Speaker 5: But when you travel around, you're doing it around the country,
- 3:55Speaker 5: it's no, I.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Don't do that one.
- 3:56Speaker 5: No.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I only did that one New York y.
- 3:58Speaker 7: Oh okay, yeah, I know the other shows a national
- 4:01Speaker 7: but that one I only did in the Dry State
- 4:02Speaker 7: area because I knew people would be like, all right,
- 4:05Speaker 7: you know, we suppose you know, but being on the
- 4:08Speaker 7: train when I when it first came out, or Puerto
- 4:11Speaker 7: Ricans on the trail, ye, screaming at me.
- 4:13Speaker 1: That's hilarious, hilarious.
- 4:16Speaker 7: Yeah so, but but yeah, it was not. It was
- 4:18Speaker 7: not something I did on the road except in the Northeast.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And by the way, you do a perfect Puerto Rican girl?
- 4:24Speaker 1: Oh me, yeah, you did it? Did I forgot you.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Were doing the Puerto Rican girlb.
- 4:30Speaker 7: Oh yeah, No. There was a black girl in my classroom.
- 4:34Speaker 7: A black girl in the classroom. Putemno was in the stoop.
- 4:36Speaker 7: I think because the black girl was telling you the
- 4:40Speaker 7: black kids to uh, she goes, shut up, Let the
- 4:43Speaker 7: teacher teach.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Go ahead, teacher.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's a good taste.
- 4:46Speaker 1: That was great.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Wait now, let me ask you. How old were you
- 4:50Speaker 5: when you realized? When did it hit you that you
- 4:54Speaker 5: were going to be a comedian and that's it, that
- 4:56Speaker 5: you're going to make a career being a comedian.
- 4:58Speaker 3: How old were you when this happened?
- 4:59Speaker 7: Well, when I was fourteen and fifteen, I hit my peak,
- 5:02Speaker 7: and everyone that grew up with me goes, yes, I
- 5:05Speaker 7: was washed up at at sixteen, But because I was
- 5:08Speaker 7: so funny back then, because you know, the stimuli of
- 5:11Speaker 7: people in the neighborhood and you're outside.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So but and then I stopped.
- 5:15Speaker 7: I didn't want to be a comedian after that. I
- 5:17Speaker 7: wanted to be serious. I wanted to be taken seriously.
- 5:20Speaker 7: I tried to study acting. I was like, because you know,
- 5:23Speaker 7: in those is there weren't that many comedians, and it
- 5:24Speaker 7: seemed really hard and it is really hard to write
- 5:26Speaker 7: me cereal. So at the time it's only five comedians,
- 5:29Speaker 7: I'm not gonna be a comedian, you know, it's it's
- 5:32Speaker 7: only a few.
- 5:33Speaker 1: It's like five in.
- 5:33Speaker 7: The whole country that people knew about you know, except
- 5:36Speaker 7: catskills guys.
- 5:37Speaker 1: You don't want to be. We didn't want to be them,
- 5:38Speaker 1: you know, yeah I wanted to be.
- 5:39Speaker 7: But if you couldn't be George Call and Richard pryor
- 5:41Speaker 7: David Brennan, you didn't want to bother.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Wow.
- 5:43Speaker 7: So then, but then in my twenties, I just I
- 5:46Speaker 7: just started doing comedy. It started to boom, so there
- 5:49Speaker 7: was places to do it, and I tried. A friend
- 5:51Speaker 7: of mine actually goes, do it, I'll do it with you,
- 5:53Speaker 7: And I did it way what place comic strip And
- 5:56Speaker 7: my first night, the guy the MC comes up to
- 5:58Speaker 7: me goes, you're a natural comeback in.
- 6:00Speaker 1: A year, like a year, ten years?
- 6:05Speaker 7: Wow, that funny, What a great line. You were a
- 6:08Speaker 7: natural come back in a year, and he was one hundred.
- 6:12Speaker 1: It's like anything else.
- 6:13Speaker 3: You can't just do it spring training, like yeah, like.
- 6:16Speaker 7: Just go to the old He was basically saying, go
- 6:18Speaker 7: to every little crumby place. Wow, don't be you know,
- 6:21Speaker 7: comedy is like everything else. It's so it seems so easy.
- 6:25Speaker 1: But then doing I don't think why.
- 6:28Speaker 5: I'm a huge comedy fan. I think it's the hardest.
- 6:32Speaker 5: It's to me comedy. I don't know, I would say comedy.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Comedy is harder than acting because you got to get
- 6:40Speaker 5: up there and I don't know what kind of mood
- 6:43Speaker 5: people are in.
- 6:44Speaker 3: They come.
- 6:45Speaker 5: They maybe they wanted a comment, they had a bad
- 6:48Speaker 5: day that day, and you got to make.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Everybody laugh or you're going to have you know, you
- 6:54Speaker 3: just it's.
- 6:54Speaker 7: Just you know, you know what I did comedy down
- 6:57Speaker 7: here in a small place, the twenty people. If you
- 7:00Speaker 7: years ago on it was either Seber twenty third or
- 7:02Speaker 7: Christmas eve cha chaws, remember I did right here?
- 7:07Speaker 3: Yeah, Salon, we have to get Colin.
- 7:11Speaker 7: Or I mean, I mean it's really kind of a
- 7:15Speaker 7: sleep in the face Italians and over the hospitality and
- 7:20Speaker 7: this is ridiculous.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Look John's gotten Thank John. Where are from originally? What
- 7:26Speaker 3: part of New York?
- 7:27Speaker 1: Brooklyn?
- 7:28Speaker 3: Brooklyn, Brooklyn?
- 7:33Speaker 1: And I lived there.
- 7:34Speaker 7: But then when I would have Manhattan, I was like nineteen,
- 7:38Speaker 7: and I swear that was my dream with living.
- 7:40Speaker 3: You got your own apartment.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Well, I lived with a friend of mine. He had
- 7:43Speaker 1: an apartment. Okay. I was always like scrounging on somebody
- 7:47Speaker 1: else's apartment.
- 7:47Speaker 3: You will capture for.
- 7:49Speaker 1: No, But I was I might as I was like, yeah,
- 7:51Speaker 1: I might as well have been, but you were paying rent.
- 7:53Speaker 7: I was paying rent, but I was never the person
- 7:55Speaker 7: who had got the lease, did you, you know, all
- 7:58Speaker 7: to fill out the paperwork.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I was at got like, hey, come out, I'll any rent.
- 8:02Speaker 7: And they're like, all right, three months you just hate
- 8:04Speaker 7: each other and I get this guy out of here.
- 8:07Speaker 1: We hated each other.
- 8:09Speaker 5: Wait, now, so when did you start making money that
- 8:13Speaker 5: you can make a living on it?
- 8:14Speaker 3: How long did it take you to make a living?
- 8:16Speaker 7: As a comment, I guess about five years, only because
- 8:20Speaker 7: I was there during the boom, so I was bartending.
- 8:23Speaker 7: But I was so lucky because they got a bartending
- 8:25Speaker 7: job that started eleven in the morning and it ended
- 8:28Speaker 7: it like eight or nine at night.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Drinking.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Well, back in the eighties, it was these businessman bars.
- 8:34Speaker 7: Oh okay, the businessman would come out and drink it
- 8:37Speaker 7: lunch and then after work they'd drink till eight o'clock.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Run home. You know, it's the eighties and like Wall Street,
- 8:44Speaker 1: Wall Street guys. I mean it was the eighties.
- 8:46Speaker 7: I was doing Cox and right now we're probably paying
- 8:49Speaker 7: through the taxies, but they're writing it all off, you
- 8:51Speaker 7: know what I mean. And we're like, hey, tipping on
- 8:54Speaker 7: us down. Yeah, they're just all written over.
- 8:56Speaker 3: People were making great money, making.
- 8:58Speaker 7: Good money, not great but good because daytime, but really
- 9:01Speaker 7: good money. And I was able to go do comedy
- 9:03Speaker 7: like I wasn't getting on till twelve at night, one
- 9:05Speaker 7: in the morning, and didn't have to be there's eleven,
- 9:08Speaker 7: So I was really lucky.
- 9:09Speaker 5: So how did you learn how to write? Did you
- 9:11Speaker 5: take writing in college?
- 9:12Speaker 1: No? I mean I tried to, but no. Stand up
- 9:15Speaker 1: writing is all I mean.
- 9:17Speaker 7: I feel like I could almost teach stand up writing
- 9:19Speaker 7: now because when I started, and nobody teaches it. That's
- 9:22Speaker 7: a beauty of stand up. Everybody's just so proud that
- 9:24Speaker 7: there's no school. I mean, you can learn the basics
- 9:26Speaker 7: from some people. But writing jokes is the way I started.
- 9:31Speaker 7: I just kept writing and then occasionally you see a joke.
- 9:33Speaker 7: You'd write for hours and one little funny thing. So
- 9:36Speaker 7: I didn't understand what I was doing. Now I know
- 9:37Speaker 7: how to write. You just take your subject, you write
- 9:40Speaker 7: every thought about is and then you have to cut
- 9:42Speaker 7: it down.
- 9:43Speaker 1: You know how it is? Writing is rewriting.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's just so check editing.
- 9:49Speaker 1: It's all editing.
- 9:50Speaker 7: Same with stand up when you go in front of
- 9:51Speaker 7: the crowd, you start talking. They're like, this just taking
- 9:55Speaker 7: a long time, and then you realize you have to
- 9:56Speaker 7: edit the next time you do it. We talk too
- 9:58Speaker 7: law right, get to the joke.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You know what I meant?
- 10:02Speaker 3: Attention?
- 10:02Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody's that.
- 10:03Speaker 7: And unless you're the most fascinating person that went around
- 10:07Speaker 7: the world fifty times, you know you better get to
- 10:09Speaker 7: those jokes.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Wow.
- 10:11Speaker 5: So I know that there's a certain kind of structure.
- 10:14Speaker 5: I always found that fascinating in writing jokes. I'm fascinated
- 10:18Speaker 5: with the comedy world period.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I love everything about it. She loves it.
- 10:21Speaker 5: Let me ask you if you would if I were
- 10:22Speaker 5: to say to you, I want to write a joke about,
- 10:25Speaker 5: you know, uh, my Christmas Eve dinner with all my
- 10:30Speaker 5: Italian family.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Right right, where do I start?
- 10:34Speaker 7: You would start by I would start by saying something,
- 10:38Speaker 7: you know, like the big mistake people make is they
- 10:40Speaker 7: stop by going I had a Christmas Eve dinner with
- 10:43Speaker 7: my crazy family.
- 10:45Speaker 1: You already gave away the joke. So I'd go at
- 10:48Speaker 1: a Christmas Eve dinner, I'm trying to have a nice dinner,
- 10:50Speaker 1: So I go. I get this now. My sister calls me.
- 10:53Speaker 7: She says, something is sort of like a hand, but
- 10:56Speaker 7: not like she's crazy. She says, hey, yeah, and that's.
- 11:01Speaker 1: The way play it and just build it up.
- 11:02Speaker 3: So it's builds up. Got to build out.
- 11:05Speaker 7: Rather than be like, you know, you give away the joe.
- 11:08Speaker 7: You don't want to give away any of the jokes.
- 11:09Speaker 1: You don't want to go.
- 11:10Speaker 7: My sister's this kind of person, you said, my sister,
- 11:13Speaker 7: she's always this.
- 11:15Speaker 1: She says this, that's fine, and she has to be
- 11:18Speaker 1: the least crazy.
- 11:19Speaker 7: So you build up to the crazy and then you
- 11:21Speaker 7: go and you call, like my sister and my aunt.
- 11:25Speaker 7: You don't say they don't get along. You go, my
- 11:27Speaker 7: sister and my aunt. They had a thing where this
- 11:29Speaker 7: happens sometimes. Now they're sitting next to each other at
- 11:32Speaker 7: the table, but it's fine. And then she said, and then.
- 11:35Speaker 1: You say the real up set it off Like a
- 11:39Speaker 1: lot of.
- 11:39Speaker 7: Comedy, is that visual, so that everything new audience conviction
- 11:42Speaker 7: their family and they're like, oh yeah, I know that
- 11:45Speaker 7: weird look somebody gives you.
- 11:47Speaker 1: So the little things are funny, you know what I mean.
- 11:50Speaker 7: But you have to really you have to care like
- 11:52Speaker 7: everything else, like acting like you have to really care
- 11:55Speaker 7: enough to go I want people to really I want
- 11:58Speaker 7: them to feel it too and.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Be like they're there.
- 12:01Speaker 7: Yeah, And if you do, you like teaching, I don't teach,
- 12:04Speaker 7: but I mean I would.
- 12:06Speaker 1: I would, Uh, it would be fun to teach.
- 12:08Speaker 3: To teach comedy, you'd be so great.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I'd be good. But there's good, there's good.
- 12:13Speaker 7: There are some good comedy teachers now, a couple of
- 12:15Speaker 7: because the ex comedians where they're still working sort of
- 12:18Speaker 7: because they've done it enough where they understand joke structures.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Just a good one.
- 12:22Speaker 5: There's a difference between a lot of people think just
- 12:24Speaker 5: because they're funny around their friends, like so many of
- 12:27Speaker 5: my people are very.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Funny, funny, But that I know, I never thought.
- 12:33Speaker 5: I never once said to somebody because they were funny,
- 12:36Speaker 5: you should be a comedian. You'd be a great I
- 12:40Speaker 5: just always knew. No, that don't mean you're a comedian.
- 12:42Speaker 5: That means you know your family. Your comfort's specific and
- 12:46Speaker 5: it's a very personal.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Thing, that's right.
- 12:49Speaker 5: It's like saying you cook good, open up a restaurant. No,
- 12:53Speaker 5: I only cook good at home, right in my kitchen.
- 12:56Speaker 3: With my family kitchen. I don't need to be opening
- 13:00Speaker 3: up a restaurant.
- 13:01Speaker 5: I wouldn't know how to do that, so people think
- 13:03Speaker 5: I'm funny, I could be a comedian. The same thing
- 13:06Speaker 5: with people that think just because they're good looking and
- 13:08Speaker 5: they're charismatic, they could be an act.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Right, yeah, right, Yeah, it's so hard. It's so.
- 13:15Speaker 7: I always say everything you do takes everything you got.
- 13:18Speaker 7: So it's like, no.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Matter what it is, you're like, oh, I could do
- 13:21Speaker 1: five things. No you can't. Now you do one thing
- 13:23Speaker 1: takes all your effort everything.
- 13:25Speaker 7: And but the funny thing on the standup, which I
- 13:27Speaker 7: always tell people, is two things. One is when we
- 13:31Speaker 7: think we're funny, we go on stage, we try a
- 13:33Speaker 7: new thing, and it doesn't work because you need the
- 13:35Speaker 7: crowd to work with you. They have to help edit
- 13:38Speaker 7: and write. And sometimes even if you're all years, I'll
- 13:41Speaker 7: go up and do this thing and they're like, there's
- 13:43Speaker 7: no joke there. Though it's humorous, we don't care. Get
- 13:45Speaker 7: to the punch.
- 13:46Speaker 5: And also when you're up there, I'm sure the crowd
- 13:48Speaker 5: pumps you up and makes you even develiver the line
- 13:52Speaker 5: batter or something that you might say sounds.
- 13:55Speaker 7: Yes, they put it even before the show. The best
- 13:58Speaker 7: writing I do is right before the show, because you're
- 14:01Speaker 7: like because.
- 14:02Speaker 1: You get that. Yeah, so it starts coming to you better.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:04Speaker 1: But the other thing I always say about the stand up,
- 14:06Speaker 1: which is really horrifying and true. It's like if you
- 14:09Speaker 1: if you're a musician and you do if you.
- 14:11Speaker 7: Do music, you know, so let's say having a night
- 14:14Speaker 7: where the crowd doesn't like you, but they can't play guitar,
- 14:18Speaker 7: they can't play piano, they can't sing whatever you're doing.
- 14:22Speaker 7: If you're a stand up and you're not getting any laughs,
- 14:25Speaker 7: that whole crowd could do what you're doing right now. Yeah,
- 14:29Speaker 7: you're no more of a stand up than they are
- 14:31Speaker 7: at that moment.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Right, They could do what you're doing.
- 14:34Speaker 7: They can sit up there and get no laughs too, right,
- 14:36Speaker 7: So you really you're not a stand up at that moment.
- 14:40Speaker 3: That's really amazing. Yeah that's crazy. Well, you are a
- 14:45Speaker 3: stand up and you are funny.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I am.
- 14:47Speaker 7: But but you know, when those nights go bad, you said,
- 14:50Speaker 7: you just start trying to play catch up.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I can't see anything ever going bad for you. No
- 14:54Speaker 3: I've ever seen.
- 14:56Speaker 7: I'll tell you exactly what happens to stand ups. Well you,
- 15:00Speaker 7: but here's happens standing. But you start bombing, you get
- 15:02Speaker 7: a little bit of sweat here, sometimes a little bit here,
- 15:04Speaker 7: and you start speeding up, and then you start speeding
- 15:07Speaker 7: up trying to get to the punchline because you want
- 15:09Speaker 7: the crowd to start laughing.
- 15:10Speaker 1: But when you speed up, your energy is off and
- 15:13Speaker 1: the crowd's not laughing.
- 15:14Speaker 7: They feel uncomfortable too, and you're also leaving out the details.
- 15:18Speaker 1: And then you see comedian. So every comedian will tell
- 15:20Speaker 1: you this.
- 15:21Speaker 7: When it's going bad, you do an hour of material
- 15:24Speaker 7: in fifteen minutes, shit, and.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Then you can't think of your bits. Oh, and it
- 15:29Speaker 1: happens to everybody.
- 15:30Speaker 7: And when you get cocky, all the big acts will
- 15:33Speaker 7: tell you they come in they're cocky, and then in
- 15:36Speaker 7: two minutes you see them.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Like uh oh oh.
- 15:38Speaker 7: I jump and then you try to win it back
- 15:40Speaker 7: and sometimes you went it back somebody you know.
- 15:42Speaker 1: But it's so funny watching people go.
- 15:44Speaker 7: You see the eyes get that little bit of feeling,
- 15:46Speaker 7: oh shit, what did I do?
- 15:48Speaker 3: Well, let me ask you.
- 15:49Speaker 5: Did you ever have like a roomb of silence where people.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Like, of course I've a bombed.
- 15:56Speaker 7: When's the last time recently, when's the last time I
- 16:00Speaker 7: did really dead science?
- 16:02Speaker 1: Well, I mean I've had bad sets in the past year.
- 16:05Speaker 7: I mean a couple of you know, you go to
- 16:07Speaker 7: the cellar, you try to worry out stuff, and the
- 16:09Speaker 7: crowd's just not that into you, and then you make
- 16:10Speaker 7: it his all. I know it's bad because you make
- 16:12Speaker 7: a joke about not doing that well and the crowd
- 16:14Speaker 7: really laughs. That's when you know, because comedy is so honest.
- 16:19Speaker 7: You want the truth an audience when they laugh or
- 16:22Speaker 7: don't laugh, that's the truth. Yeah, why they can't, for
- 16:25Speaker 7: it's involuntary. It's involuntary. Applause is different laughter, and no
- 16:30Speaker 7: laughter is involuntary.
- 16:32Speaker 3: What makes a good comic? What makes the great ones?
- 16:34Speaker 5: What makes the ones that are like, oh he's great,
- 16:37Speaker 5: she's great, she's like.
- 16:38Speaker 7: What makes the good Well, it depends how you look
- 16:40Speaker 7: at it, because from comedians, like, we look at it
- 16:42Speaker 7: the way you look at acting.
- 16:43Speaker 1: We're like, oh, that person is not great. You guys
- 16:46Speaker 1: think you're a great.
- 16:47Speaker 7: Same thing with the comedians, well, we think of the
- 16:49Speaker 7: great comedians. Wouldn't necessarily translate to commercial successfully, you know
- 16:53Speaker 7: what I mean, that's just the way it is. But
- 16:56Speaker 7: I mean, so commercially successful is one thing, which I
- 16:59Speaker 7: believe it's the same thing.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I don't know if it's the same in acting, it's people.
- 17:03Speaker 7: The real big ones to me, have one thing in common,
- 17:08Speaker 7: which is the whole time they're up there, they're just
- 17:13Speaker 7: they're not trying. In their heart of hearts, they believe
- 17:18Speaker 7: there's nothing else anybody should be doing than watching them.
- 17:21Speaker 7: Or is that an e but it's it's an ego,
- 17:27Speaker 7: But it's like to not believe that while you're on
- 17:30Speaker 7: stage in front of these people.
- 17:31Speaker 1: It's stupid. But it's also because.
- 17:33Speaker 7: You get you know, like, oh I don't deserve this.
- 17:35Speaker 7: It's like you're up there, we're watching. Why would you
- 17:38Speaker 7: think otherwise? And the real I feel like all the
- 17:40Speaker 7: big ones, in their heart of hearts they believe this
- 17:45Speaker 7: is where you should make They deserve it. And I
- 17:47Speaker 7: feel that's probably true in every business across the board.
- 17:51Speaker 1: The people that really think they deserve it get it.
- 17:55Speaker 3: I think he's right. Yeah, that takes so. I think
- 17:57Speaker 3: you're right. That is pretty profound.
- 18:00Speaker 7: Yeah right, it's crazy, right, but it's true. I believe
- 18:03Speaker 7: they just they and some people are they're fair. Maybe
- 18:06Speaker 7: they got it from their family, maybe they're born with
- 18:07Speaker 7: who knows. But I feel like all really successful people,
- 18:11Speaker 7: like they say in sports they go. The real stars
- 18:14Speaker 7: in basketball are the ones when it's a layer of shots.
- 18:18Speaker 7: When it's a layer shot in the game, most guys
- 18:19Speaker 7: are like even in the pros, are like.
- 18:23Speaker 1: The guys that like, give me the ball, give me
- 18:25Speaker 1: the ball. They're the superstars. You know.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Wow, that's true that you know. Uh, it's the confidence
- 18:34Speaker 5: and all about that. There are if they want to
- 18:37Speaker 5: call it, maybe maybe is being call him God complex.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Maybe God complex is good. God complex is great. Wow.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you have to have that air.
- 18:49Speaker 5: I guess if you know what I think I saw
- 18:51Speaker 5: it was. Dustin Hoffman said, yes, Richard Burton, why do
- 18:55Speaker 5: we do this?
- 18:55Speaker 3: Everybody saw that, right.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Dustin Hoffman said to Richard Burton, Richard, why don't we
- 19:01Speaker 5: do this?
- 19:01Speaker 3: Richard?
- 19:02Speaker 5: And Richard Burton went got up a little bit and
- 19:05Speaker 5: he went look at me, look at me, look at me,
- 19:07Speaker 5: look at me, at me, look at me.
- 19:10Speaker 3: And he wouldn't stop saying it. And he was like, wow,
- 19:15Speaker 3: that's true. That's true.
- 19:17Speaker 7: Yeah, but it's also it is totally that, but it's
- 19:21Speaker 7: also wanting to reflect things in the world, you know
- 19:26Speaker 7: what I mean, there's a part of that too, and like, hey, yeah,
- 19:29Speaker 7: so it's definitely both.
- 19:31Speaker 1: I feel like it's.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Both CONTI heels. I'm telling you last night when I saw.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah his partner who.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Does the podcast with him, Pete. Oh my god, he's
- 19:45Speaker 3: so funny, so funny. He's funny like and charismatic.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I love him. Yeah, you know him, Yes, I know,
- 19:54Speaker 1: my god, so great.
- 19:55Speaker 5: I love that guy funny. Then that other guy, McKay caine, mckaid.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Oh, I don't know him.
- 20:04Speaker 3: I'm so sorry that I'm forgetting.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Lone Wolf to be a show, Lone Wolf mcquad.
- 20:14Speaker 4: I watched that show.
- 20:16Speaker 1: It sounds like I think it was.
- 20:18Speaker 7: I think it was one of those Texas Ranger shows
- 20:20Speaker 7: before Chuck Dorris Lone Wolf equaid.
- 20:23Speaker 1: It's only off like a year, it was only on.
- 20:26Speaker 5: A Netflix pulled it and then and then Jerry Seinfeld
- 20:34Speaker 5: came and then he did a set.
- 20:38Speaker 3: The whole thing was mostly about his wife. And then
- 20:41Speaker 3: uh uh.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Then Sebastian of course comes out and and I and
- 20:47Speaker 5: I was thinking to myself, what is it got Jerry
- 20:52Speaker 5: and Sebastian. I mean, he has it to correct Korea?
- 20:55Speaker 5: How do you see Corielly?
- 20:59Speaker 3: He had it to what.
- 21:02Speaker 5: It's It's funny, how you there's great, there's really good,
- 21:07Speaker 5: and there's great, there's great, and then there's just immaculate, unbelievable.
- 21:12Speaker 5: You're the star, You're star, this star remembered, You're the
- 21:17Speaker 5: star iconic. Who would you You've got that cativactor, You're
- 21:21Speaker 5: going to be big, you could do. Who would you
- 21:23Speaker 5: put in that category? Who is your favorite of stars?
- 21:26Speaker 5: Of the comedians?
- 21:27Speaker 3: Who?
- 21:27Speaker 5: Like would you say that today? Is no, I'm just
- 21:30Speaker 5: nor Idols?
- 21:32Speaker 1: Oh oh, when I was well, I mean it was
- 21:33Speaker 1: always George calling.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Him.
- 21:36Speaker 7: I mean he was when I was growing up. I
- 21:38Speaker 7: couldn't believe, couldn't because it was a new voice too.
- 21:41Speaker 7: And Richard Pryce, like they were both these guys that
- 21:45Speaker 7: came at a time when it was none of that.
- 21:48Speaker 7: You know, they all came out of Lenny Bruce. Lenny
- 21:50Speaker 7: Bruce broke the mold a lot of people. Lenny Bruce
- 21:52Speaker 7: wasn't his great He broke the mold. He changed the
- 21:55Speaker 7: whole game. Well, he didn't like he was.
- 21:58Speaker 3: The brand though of comics.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Yes, yes, exactly.
- 22:02Speaker 7: He because he talked about things when people couldn't talk
- 22:06Speaker 7: about it. After that, people actually like, oh we'll talk
- 22:09Speaker 7: about the church or whatever.
- 22:11Speaker 1: It's like, okay, it's not that dangerous.
- 22:13Speaker 3: The first person to cross the line and be really
- 22:15Speaker 3: edgy or oh.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Yeah, he really crossed the line.
- 22:18Speaker 7: I mean, nobody would curse, nobody would talk about their
- 22:22Speaker 7: sex life except they do, like joke jokes, and they
- 22:24Speaker 7: were funny.
- 22:25Speaker 3: But he was. He would get arrested on stage, they
- 22:29Speaker 3: take them on stage.
- 22:31Speaker 7: But it was like, yeah, it was one of those
- 22:33Speaker 7: guys that was just changed the game so much like
- 22:36Speaker 7: some people just change the game.
- 22:37Speaker 1: So he was that guy. But but yeah, well like.
- 22:39Speaker 7: George Colin, I was like, these guys are doing something
- 22:42Speaker 7: that nobody did.
- 22:45Speaker 5: And the genius that George Colin is you watch I'm
- 22:48Speaker 5: watching his stuff now like I always watched him.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Still, gene is so relevant. It was like he was genius.
- 22:53Speaker 5: He was seeing the future like exactly the way it's unfolding,
- 22:59Speaker 5: George Colin, Yeah said it, the way it's unfolding.
- 23:03Speaker 3: It's the way he talks about the government relevant right
- 23:07Speaker 3: now the club and you're not.
- 23:10Speaker 4: They're in the club and you're on.
- 23:13Speaker 3: It's amazing and it's still.
- 23:16Speaker 7: And I also feel like he was because he did
- 23:20Speaker 7: so much work. He was such a hard worker and
- 23:24Speaker 7: stand up, like to memorize those lists alone that he
- 23:29Speaker 7: used to do. It's impossible, and he did it every year.
- 23:33Speaker 7: He just worked so hard. You can see his specials.
- 23:35Speaker 7: You can see how much he put into it, and
- 23:37Speaker 7: it's like that's also admirable, Like all those routines he
- 23:40Speaker 7: came up with, but to put them in order to
- 23:43Speaker 7: make sense, Oh yeah, that takes it.
- 23:45Speaker 1: And he didn't have any assistance. He just did himself.
- 23:47Speaker 1: You know, I don't know that. I'm just saying that.
- 23:49Speaker 3: I'm going to say something. That's the thing too.
- 23:52Speaker 5: You talk about a start when I was Jerry Sebastian.
- 23:58Speaker 5: You to you guys, never stop. You never stop learning,
- 24:05Speaker 5: and you're always willing to keep going. And like you
- 24:08Speaker 5: had give you gave Tara advice on the fat in
- 24:11Speaker 5: the car. You said, you gotta keep going to the
- 24:14Speaker 5: little clubs. Don't think that you know you.
- 24:17Speaker 3: You got to always do it.
- 24:19Speaker 5: Look at me as an actor, I'm still in the
- 24:21Speaker 5: actor's studio all the time, working and working and working
- 24:25Speaker 5: and working and still not thinking I'm going on, I
- 24:28Speaker 5: could do it better.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I could do better.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Still.
- 24:30Speaker 3: To me, that's the joy of it.
- 24:32Speaker 5: I don't want to ever be like, oh I got it,
- 24:34Speaker 5: I figured it out, I did it.
- 24:36Speaker 3: I wanna to me.
- 24:37Speaker 5: The fun is still trying to learn and going, wow,
- 24:40Speaker 5: I'm getting better and I'm getting better and I'm getting better.
- 24:43Speaker 3: It's such it's so fun to learn your craft.
- 24:46Speaker 7: I know it really it really, it is fun, you
- 24:48Speaker 7: know what I mean, even though part of me wants
- 24:51Speaker 7: to be done with it and just be like, know
- 24:53Speaker 7: how to do it? And I have to do this,
- 24:55Speaker 7: you know, horrible stuff. I was talking about with some
- 24:58Speaker 7: comedians say it's like, you're ready, it's such a passole.
- 25:01Speaker 7: And he was saying it he's a younger guy, and
- 25:02Speaker 7: I was like, oh good, even it's hitting them too.
- 25:05Speaker 1: But but it's so like you said, it's such a but.
- 25:08Speaker 7: But the it's really interesting and it's pleasurable, you know
- 25:11Speaker 7: what I mean.
- 25:12Speaker 5: The payback is so much better than the heartache when
- 25:14Speaker 5: you got to sit there painstakingly write something. The payback
- 25:18Speaker 5: when you write something great and then you hear the audience.
- 25:21Speaker 5: Are you still in that in that place where you
- 25:23Speaker 5: it still gives you so much.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Staticsy, Yes, it's the only thing that does. Yeah, it's great.
- 25:28Speaker 7: I mean it's the only part of comedy, you know,
- 25:30Speaker 7: all the politics or whatever you like when you go
- 25:33Speaker 7: and you come up with some thought that you will think,
- 25:36Speaker 7: you want to make sure it's a joke, even if
- 25:37Speaker 7: it's not funny, and you make it funny, it's it's
- 25:40Speaker 7: the best feeling.
- 25:40Speaker 2: You know.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Well, we we asked Eric.
- 25:44Speaker 5: I want to ask you too, what do you feel
- 25:46Speaker 5: that it's hard now to talk to say what you
- 25:49Speaker 5: want because of you for getting canceled or wokeness.
- 25:52Speaker 7: I think that there's I think that there's a layer
- 25:56Speaker 7: of that that exists in society where the people admitt
- 26:00Speaker 7: or no, but it's it's beyond that. It's shifted to
- 26:04Speaker 7: where people are just like, we're not gonna laugh if
- 26:08Speaker 7: you use certain terminality, if you use if you speak
- 26:11Speaker 7: a certain way, people are just like it just their
- 26:15Speaker 7: brains don't compute it. So it's almost pointless to even
- 26:19Speaker 7: try to talk about certain things. And this he's a
- 26:22Speaker 7: perfect example, that New York story. I got that in barely.
- 26:26Speaker 7: I don't know how, but to do that now people
- 26:28Speaker 7: would be like, that's interesting. He's talking about ethnicity like
- 26:33Speaker 7: it's like from another it's almost like an archeological dig.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Wow you did, I mean almost what it was eight
- 26:40Speaker 1: years ago?
- 26:42Speaker 5: But I still think it would. I still would think
- 26:43Speaker 5: people would sit normally.
- 26:45Speaker 7: No, people that grew up where were yeah, where we
- 26:48Speaker 7: grew up and think it was fine.
- 26:49Speaker 1: But I'm just saying, but now the new generation, they'd
- 26:51Speaker 1: be like, yeah.
- 26:52Speaker 7: That's uh, that's I've heard, that's how my grandfather talks.
- 26:56Speaker 7: Oh yeah, yeah, they'd be like, that's an It's almost
- 26:59Speaker 7: like a it's archaeology, you know. I mean it's just
- 27:02Speaker 7: from another It's like it's so anyway, so certain things,
- 27:06Speaker 7: but in general, you just, like you said, the more
- 27:09Speaker 7: depth you have, the more you want to talk about
- 27:12Speaker 7: other things.
- 27:13Speaker 1: And yes, there's still.
- 27:14Speaker 7: That, but but it's uh, I feel like audiences now
- 27:18Speaker 7: are kind of like we're sick of that.
- 27:20Speaker 3: I feel like they have no sense of humoring.
- 27:22Speaker 1: There's a very no but a lot of kids crave humor. No,
- 27:25Speaker 1: there's there's a lot of them now to do it.
- 27:27Speaker 7: It's sort of a backlash against that too, which is good.
- 27:31Speaker 3: I think it's turning. I think it's I think it could.
- 27:34Speaker 7: I just say that because I want to believe it. Yeah,
- 27:36Speaker 7: I hope so it's probably not, but I.
- 27:38Speaker 3: Wish that I hope it does.
- 27:40Speaker 5: I just feel like like we were just saying too
- 27:42Speaker 5: until our last couple of guests. It's all about this
- 27:44Speaker 5: TikTok and scrolling and scrolling, exactly rolling, and they don't
- 27:47Speaker 5: have this tens span anymore to sit there and listen.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Like sometimes I tell my kids, listen up three.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Inches of crazy though, Yeah it's crazy.
- 28:02Speaker 3: You know what drives me crazy and makes me very sad.
- 28:05Speaker 5: When I'm on the train, I look, every single person
- 28:08Speaker 5: has the phone.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Yeah, nobody is not on their phone.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I know.
- 28:12Speaker 5: When I get on the train, I don't go on
- 28:14Speaker 5: my phone because I like looking at people. So I
- 28:17Speaker 5: put my phone away and I say, a way to
- 28:19Speaker 5: get robbed, get out.
- 28:21Speaker 3: I watch everybody. Everybody's on their phone. It's everybody's on
- 28:25Speaker 3: their phone. It's it's it's just crazy.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I'm never looking at my phone with my ear pods in.
- 28:30Speaker 5: But yeah, but you know why those ye pods of
- 28:36Speaker 5: dangers on the street too.
- 28:37Speaker 3: You don't know what that was going on. I know
- 28:38Speaker 3: that's scary.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 28:41Speaker 7: Even now walking to the feast, I was, I was
- 28:43Speaker 7: on the phone and I was trying to video, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 7: just take shots.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Of and then I almost got run over. Buy a bike,
- 28:52Speaker 1: Imagine Bike mag Where is he said he was going
- 28:55Speaker 1: to show up. You guys are bad mouthed. Mean, we
- 28:57Speaker 1: won't lie in the street.
- 29:00Speaker 4: He's knocked over with a bike and you're like.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Comedy skit bike.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I got hit.
- 29:07Speaker 3: I got hit by a city bike on the way
- 29:09Speaker 3: into the park.
- 29:09Speaker 1: By the way, the feast is packed tonight.
- 29:12Speaker 3: I know.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Did you have any It's a nice night. That's why
- 29:17Speaker 1: I had a little sausage. You had it, yeah, a
- 29:20Speaker 1: little bit.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Did you like it?
- 29:21Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 29:22Speaker 3: You enjoyed it.
- 29:23Speaker 1: I love it.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Do you eat zaplis you mean zeppels? I say, what
- 29:30Speaker 3: do you say?
- 29:30Speaker 1: John?
- 29:31Speaker 4: It sounds like Pajocula.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Wait we have John.
- 29:35Speaker 5: Come walk in right now, really quick, johncob in. This
- 29:39Speaker 5: is John's establishment.
- 29:42Speaker 3: John said what I was John. Oh, We're so happy
- 29:48Speaker 3: to have you.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Happy to have you guys here.
- 29:49Speaker 3: This is an honor right now. John is here, John.
- 29:53Speaker 5: This is John's Red Sauce studio belongs to John.
- 29:57Speaker 3: John is so interesting. I love John. No how I
- 30:00Speaker 3: met John?
- 30:02Speaker 1: MDB credit This is one I.
- 30:04Speaker 3: He did a movie with Henry wink Law. He was
- 30:07Speaker 3: produced it Henry wink Law. Who else.
- 30:14Speaker 1: I wouldn't even say what it was? Okay, but who
- 30:18Speaker 1: was Henry was in it. Greg Grunberg was in it.
- 30:21Speaker 6: Tom Arnold was in it. Yes, uh uh, Kim Whitley,
- 30:27Speaker 6: who was awesome.
- 30:28Speaker 5: Yes, right, but a lot of people now yeah, And
- 30:30Speaker 5: he produced this movie.
- 30:31Speaker 3: As a kid, he came out to California.
- 30:33Speaker 6: I was running away from I was engaged to a
- 30:36Speaker 6: girl here who lost the marbles, and so I fled
- 30:38Speaker 6: to l A and I got involved with this thing.
- 30:40Speaker 3: And yeah, that's how I met John.
- 30:42Speaker 5: I I was Henry Winkle's girlfriend. And it was so yes,
- 30:51Speaker 5: it was called sex addiction.
- 30:58Speaker 3: Wait a minute, Wait a minute. You did you have?
- 31:01Speaker 3: Did you have?
- 31:01Speaker 5: You had to like get into a bed scene?
- 31:04Speaker 1: She had Henry wink.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Henry Winklin told me that lesson.
- 31:11Speaker 6: Told me two lessons once I said something to one
- 31:14Speaker 6: of the actors. I was a little kid, and he
- 31:16Speaker 6: said call me and said, John, I'm a teacher. Two
- 31:19Speaker 6: important lessons. Number One, in television, if you're a producer,
- 31:24Speaker 6: you can talk to the talent. In movies, speak to
- 31:27Speaker 6: the director. I said, okay, thank you. What's the second lesson?
- 31:29Speaker 6: He said, eating apple, eating apple every morning, your ship regular.
- 31:32Speaker 5: And that was a second.
- 31:34Speaker 7: I was like, all right, that's crazy. Henry Winger said
- 31:41Speaker 7: he was in a sex movie, that it.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Was a comedy. You we wait. So that's how I
- 31:53Speaker 3: met John.
- 31:53Speaker 5: But John left the movie business. Realized that made you
- 31:57Speaker 5: realize that that's not your thing. John lives here now,
- 32:03Speaker 5: which he always did back home. He opened this place.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Give us the history of this place. This was the Italian.
- 32:09Speaker 6: Museum, right and it will be again downstairs.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Okay. He owns this building in.
- 32:14Speaker 1: The retail space.
- 32:15Speaker 5: Just okaya studio, red studio.
- 32:19Speaker 3: We don't want coming, no, exactly, that's.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Enough slipping around outside.
- 32:24Speaker 6: Literally, uh, this is studio we've built because we got
- 32:33Speaker 6: this property. This is retail condo. And I have a
- 32:36Speaker 6: podcast called the Italian American Podcast about culture and history,
- 32:39Speaker 6: and my partner Sabino's got Growing Up Italian, which is
- 32:42Speaker 6: more of a funny you know, look at the Italian life.
- 32:45Speaker 3: They filmed here too.
- 32:46Speaker 6: Yeah, now they sometimes They still got their studio in Brooklyn.
- 32:49Speaker 6: But this was kind of fell into our lap and
- 32:51Speaker 6: we were trying to help another local business that needed
- 32:54Speaker 6: the place and they ended up not needing a place.
- 32:56Speaker 6: So we had all this square footage and decided let's
- 32:59Speaker 6: do like Good Morning in America style.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Out that's great.
- 33:02Speaker 6: Yeah, and then we'll do retail and stuff around and.

- 33:12Speaker 1: of mine.
- 33:13Speaker 6: I'm the last person should be doing a podcast. My
- 33:15Speaker 6: phone is like, I want to flip phone. I want
- 33:17Speaker 6: to be left alone and go in the mountains.
- 33:19Speaker 1: I don't even like talking to people, but I think
- 33:24Speaker 1: being honest about it is a good thing.
- 33:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:26Speaker 7: I don't like people. People that pretend they're not a
- 33:28Speaker 7: certain way. They're the ones that get hostile. Yeah, you're saying,
- 33:32Speaker 7: you know, I don't want to be any trouble.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Ami doesn't fail water.

- 34:21Speaker 1: Carry the rice, gab go ahead.
- 34:24Speaker 7: The get should get mad. I don't want to get

- 38:17Speaker 3: It was.
- 38:17Speaker 7: Yeah, I hope you haven't noticed and judged me on
- 38:19Speaker 7: my style. Because the nurse she probably looked at that.

- 44:13Speaker 1: is that he talks kind of low and he's kind
- 44:15Speaker 1: of yeah, and he's just kind of distracted. So he's there,

- 44:21Speaker 3: It's interesting.
- 44:22Speaker 4: Yes, he's a loof.
- 44:25Speaker 3: He's a loaf the least.

- 44:37Speaker 7: Were black mouths with something that draws you something, yeah,
- 44:40Speaker 7: but then they wanted to talk.
- 44:41Speaker 1: What's yet?

- 44:44Speaker 3: when you went.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Out, Oh my godun't.
- 44:48Speaker 7: I mean, I've really been relentless my whole life.

- 44:55Speaker 3: Really? Do you talk a lot at home with your wife.
- 44:57Speaker 7: Always, and she's watching TV and she just says, she goes,
- 45:01Speaker 7: she said it the other night, she goes, I'm finally
- 45:03Speaker 7: used to you commenting throughout the whole show. Either I'm
- 45:09Speaker 7: joking or I'm trashing the show. I'm saying predicting what
- 45:12Speaker 7: they're gonna say, what's gonna happen.
- 45:13Speaker 3: Oh, I can't watch it quietly and then we talk.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Well, most of these seas are not interesting enough to
- 45:21Speaker 1: watch quietly.
- 45:22Speaker 7: If it's really good, then I'll be quiet, But most
- 45:24Speaker 7: of them, I'm like, oh, yeah, of course I gotta
- 45:26Speaker 7: do that. And she's like sitting in But she's on
- 45:28Speaker 7: the phone the whole time anyway, so she can't really
- 45:30Speaker 7: about me.
- 45:31Speaker 1: She's on the phone and I'm talking to the TV.
- 45:33Speaker 1: So who's worse.
- 45:35Speaker 3: That's a good combo. But it would be like, what
- 45:38Speaker 3: do you watch at home? I would be so interested.
- 45:41Speaker 7: I mean I've watched, I mean we watch everything, like
- 45:44Speaker 7: right now we're watching this thing. Is not that it's good,
- 45:47Speaker 7: but it's not that great some Nicole Cadman.
- 45:52Speaker 5: I saw that the couple, Yes, a couple couple. I
- 45:57Speaker 5: thought the ending sucks.
- 46:00Speaker 3: Thing sucked.
- 46:01Speaker 7: Oh no oh no oh, I'm sorry you didn't finish it. No,
- 46:06Speaker 7: but I mean I'm glad I know it's up, because
- 46:08Speaker 7: now I won't give my home self.
- 46:10Speaker 3: Could I recommend something that's genius?
- 46:12Speaker 1: I already sawry what is it?
- 46:15Speaker 3: The Wise Guy?
- 46:16Speaker 5: I thought you David Chase, the documentary on David Chase's Amazing.
- 46:21Speaker 3: No I'm going to tell you something I saw it.
- 46:23Speaker 3: I think it's genius.
- 46:24Speaker 7: It was fine, not that great, but what whoa, Oh
- 46:30Speaker 7: it was okay. They hinted and a lot of stuff
- 46:33Speaker 7: they didn't give us, a lot of spill spilled it
- 46:35Speaker 7: the tape, a lot of hinting around going in that
- 46:37Speaker 7: thing didn't get to the dirt.
- 46:39Speaker 5: Well, you don't like the way they showed I think
- 46:41Speaker 5: that should be put into schools for writing. The way
- 46:45Speaker 5: David Chase took from the mother and the father, and
- 46:48Speaker 5: the way they show it, the way they actually filmed
- 46:51Speaker 5: it when he talks about how his mother was and
- 46:53Speaker 5: then it goes and my mother used to say, and
- 46:55Speaker 5: then they'd show it, you know, they're writing it out
- 46:58Speaker 5: and then you see Edie, I mean Nancy Marshat actually
- 47:03Speaker 5: saying the words that his mother like.
- 47:04Speaker 3: The way he wrote.
- 47:05Speaker 5: It, it's almost like the way I wrote my script,
- 47:08Speaker 5: because like I thought about it and then I just
- 47:12Speaker 5: I didn't like, I didn't think too much when I
- 47:14Speaker 5: wrote that thing, right, so I thought about it visually
- 47:18Speaker 5: and how I saw it I was writing it.
- 47:20Speaker 7: By the way her script is, it's so so brill yeah,
- 47:25Speaker 7: so brilliant.
- 47:27Speaker 1: I mean he really just blew my mind.
- 47:29Speaker 5: You know so good from you that you take pride
- 47:34Speaker 5: in writing, and.
- 47:37Speaker 1: That's beautiful.
- 47:38Speaker 3: I can't even tell you how much it means to me.
- 47:40Speaker 1: It's so true.
- 47:41Speaker 3: It's amazing.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Everyone I read like, oh wow, yeah, wow, it's gonna
- 47:47Speaker 1: be great.
- 47:48Speaker 3: But yeah, thank you, and I read it first. You
- 47:51Speaker 3: couldn't believe I read as I said. That's because I
- 47:52Speaker 3: have my doctor right, yes.
- 47:56Speaker 5: She.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Said, I read a doctor.
- 48:00Speaker 6: Do it?
- 48:00Speaker 1: Sure?
- 48:01Speaker 3: I'd be dragging all day when you did you have
- 48:04Speaker 3: a doctorate.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Well, I'll be honest with you.
- 48:09Speaker 7: The David Chase thing, I feel like I was. I
- 48:12Speaker 7: was furious at the end because.
- 48:14Speaker 1: All I wanted. I'm not caring. I was furious, but
- 48:17Speaker 1: I was just all I wanted.
- 48:20Speaker 5: Him.
- 48:21Speaker 1: It was all I.
- 48:23Speaker 7: Wanted was some First of all, the fact that they go, well,
- 48:27Speaker 7: you know a lot of these characters were bad people,
- 48:30Speaker 7: so we felt we could write bed what a great insight.
- 48:33Speaker 7: No shit, I don't like being patronized. Everybody loves the Sopranos.
- 48:40Speaker 1: We love it. Don't act like we just got there.
- 48:43Speaker 1: Everybody been watching it for twenty years. We love it.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Don't be treating us like, well, guys, you have to
- 48:49Speaker 1: understand something about it.
- 48:50Speaker 7: It's like most people I know know the Sourpridos better
- 48:53Speaker 7: than people who wrote it.
- 48:54Speaker 1: They've been obsessed with it. Yes, so let's take it
- 48:57Speaker 1: to another level.
- 48:58Speaker 7: Just talk to the people that I've been watching it
- 49:00Speaker 7: for twenty five years, but it's still a lot of
- 49:02Speaker 7: good stuff in it.
- 49:03Speaker 1: But ultimately, you know.
- 49:06Speaker 3: You watch both parts.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Yeah, did they interview? I watched both parts and I
- 49:14Speaker 1: watched about me.
- 49:16Speaker 3: But you didn't do like No, I didn't do it.
- 49:18Speaker 7: No. I watched both parts and I watched part of
- 49:21Speaker 7: it again, just to make sure that's the kind of
- 49:24Speaker 7: judicious person I am. I was going to be fair
- 49:26Speaker 7: instead of uh oh, sitting there and just giving my
- 49:30Speaker 7: shitty attitude about things.
- 49:32Speaker 5: Did you feel that it was a letdown because they
- 49:34Speaker 5: didn't explain a lot of.
- 49:35Speaker 1: I felt it was a letdown.
- 49:36Speaker 5: Yes, stud Sorry, I don't think it was fair. It
- 49:46Speaker 5: was Jesus Christ talk about foot and mountains.
- 49:53Speaker 1: There was honest.
- 49:55Speaker 5: Come on, David, I didn't watch it yet, So I'm
- 50:00Speaker 5: gonna tell you too, because you know I'll be honest
- 50:02Speaker 5: with you till and tell you.
- 50:04Speaker 3: Look, and you know.
- 50:05Speaker 4: How I love the surprise.
- 50:06Speaker 5: I love the suppress I got on the podcast We're
- 50:08Speaker 5: gonna have I love this honest critique, World.
- 50:15Speaker 3: Honest critique.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Yeah, we come back.
- 50:18Speaker 3: Sure you can see your number one fan.
- 50:23Speaker 1: Let me tell you something. The this is this is
- 50:26Speaker 1: this is how you tell somebody get out. I've important
- 50:33Speaker 1: business tomorrow.
- 50:34Speaker 3: What is it?
- 50:36Speaker 4: He went back?
- 50:37Speaker 3: He wants a fan?
- 50:38Speaker 4: What is this day?
- 50:39Speaker 1: What tomorrow?
- 50:45Speaker 4: To tell about?
- 50:46Speaker 1: How us?
- 50:48Speaker 3: What a bomb?
- 50:49Speaker 1: That was what I wanted? A bomb? But it was
- 50:53Speaker 1: just I just felt like there was there was a
- 50:54Speaker 1: lot of stuffing surface, like they didn't get.
- 50:57Speaker 3: To what I wanted. I thought it was so deep
- 50:58Speaker 3: and insightful and genius. We have some different perspectives.
- 51:03Speaker 6: Yeah, you couldn't be more opposite than that.
- 51:05Speaker 3: Really did you like it?
- 51:06Speaker 6: I didn't see it yet.
- 51:09Speaker 7: I'll give you the little So it starts out with
- 51:13Speaker 7: a lot of stuff for the film school stop and
- 51:15Speaker 7: it's early film. Then it gets to the auditions, so
- 51:18Speaker 7: you see different people auditioning.
- 51:19Speaker 3: What do you think of that?
- 51:20Speaker 7: For Tony and and you're like, this is going to
- 51:23Speaker 7: be great and guess what after that?
- 51:32Speaker 5: Wow, from a full time to empty.
- 51:35Speaker 7: I was so excited because I don't think they understand
- 51:39Speaker 7: what how what the Sopranos means to people and how.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Deep people understand.
- 51:43Speaker 3: That's why they did the documentary.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Well they should.
- 51:46Speaker 7: They're dreating like everybody's just like those kinds of lines,
- 51:49Speaker 7: like those kind of patronizing.
- 51:50Speaker 1: Lines you tube about people every I'll read.
- 51:53Speaker 7: Comments, I'll watch your Sopranos scene once in a while
- 51:55Speaker 7: on YouTube the comments underneath.
- 51:57Speaker 1: I'm like Jesus, they just taught me something.
- 52:00Speaker 7: The people that watch it, they have all this insight
- 52:03Speaker 7: into what David Chase meant, and it did sort of
- 52:07Speaker 7: almost hinted that David Jay he set up things three
- 52:10Speaker 7: seasons in advance. But I would have known that you're
- 52:13Speaker 7: not watching it, but that the common people the people.
- 52:17Speaker 1: So I feel like it should have started from that perce.
- 52:19Speaker 3: Super fans, But I gotta tell you something.
- 52:21Speaker 5: I'm gonna take a shot and say, I'll bet you
- 52:24Speaker 5: one hundred dollars it's gonna win Best Documentary and a ward.
- 52:30Speaker 7: Because that's the easiest hundred bucks I ever made in
- 52:33Speaker 7: my life.
- 52:33Speaker 1: Question though.
- 52:35Speaker 6: We talked about the super constantly on my show, Yes,
- 52:38Speaker 6: big bonus connection with Italian people, right, the great grow
- 52:40Speaker 6: and con But it seems like everybody is converted to
- 52:43Speaker 6: love the show. Your people who were doubters. So why
- 52:47Speaker 6: what is it about this show that makes it? There's
- 52:50Speaker 6: a lot of great shows that have come out to
- 52:51Speaker 6: be honest of why Sopranos so universal.
- 52:54Speaker 5: That they say it's the greatest show of all time
- 52:56Speaker 5: on because I think that Tony is the anti hero.
- 53:00Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what it is.
- 53:01Speaker 1: And it's also funny.
- 53:03Speaker 3: It's great.
- 53:03Speaker 7: Every comedian I know laughs the jokes. The characters are
- 53:07Speaker 7: so funny. Your characters, Tony Serrico, everybody's funny. Even when
- 53:12Speaker 7: you're going after Audi.
- 53:13Speaker 1: It's funny.
- 53:15Speaker 7: The look you give Tony when he goes hey, when
- 53:17Speaker 7: you're at the co check and you.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Look at him like you got some bore. This is
- 53:21Speaker 1: the kind of shit that's real. It's so funny.
- 53:24Speaker 7: And also the fact that Genius is there to chase
- 53:27Speaker 7: one season when they do that big episode we hit,
- 53:31Speaker 7: they're fighting the whole season. He's leading up to like,
- 53:33Speaker 7: is gonna be woa this one? This one and the
- 53:35Speaker 7: last episode I'm waiting for violence and it's just them fighting.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Yes, And it's like he's just.
- 53:40Speaker 7: Saying, this is what the show is, and like, this
- 53:43Speaker 7: show's yes, gious.
- 53:45Speaker 5: It is it's yeah, even twenty five years later, we
- 53:48Speaker 5: watched it again after Yeah, during COVID and I just
- 53:52Speaker 5: watched it again because my numb my son inlaw was
- 53:54Speaker 5: watching it and coincidentally, I was a character that night.
- 53:58Speaker 4: I walk into she Is and.
- 54:00Speaker 5: It's scene I'm like just with Catherine and she was like, Oh,
- 54:03Speaker 5: that's fine scene. I was trying to tell you, But
- 54:05Speaker 5: it's just it's just still genius today.
- 54:09Speaker 3: It is.
- 54:09Speaker 5: But people do watch it and they're like like super
- 54:13Speaker 5: fans are like they know it inside out and when
- 54:17Speaker 5: you showed them something and they disappointed if they don't
- 54:20Speaker 5: get they want to know what.
- 54:21Speaker 3: They want to know everything. He's watching universally? Why universally
- 54:27Speaker 3: like non Italian's.
- 54:28Speaker 5: Oh while go to boise here, like my buddy Pat
- 54:34Speaker 5: always he we had a fight about it last week
- 54:36Speaker 5: on our show.
- 54:36Speaker 6: Some filmmaker came in very agitated that we were praising
- 54:40Speaker 6: the show, and.
- 54:41Speaker 3: He was agitating, very filmmaker, Yeah, because it don he.
- 54:45Speaker 6: Was a Sicilian American felt that you know, the same
- 54:48Speaker 6: old stuff you've always heard, and Pat kept saying, but
- 54:51Speaker 6: everybody I know relates to this, right, There's something very
- 54:55Speaker 6: relatable about it and it's I'm not creative enough to
- 54:58Speaker 6: know what that mystery secret so says, But it's.
- 55:00Speaker 3: There because they humanized Tony. They humanized him. They showed
- 55:04Speaker 3: him as a father, a gangster.
- 55:07Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what I say all the time, because I
- 55:10Speaker 5: always say this is his this is what I think
- 55:13Speaker 5: the genius of it. It was him and Lorraine Brockout
- 55:17Speaker 5: because we get to see almost like a five dimensional
- 55:23Speaker 5: cat in his brain. We get to know what's going
- 55:27Speaker 5: on in his brain, in his person through Lorraine in therapy,
- 55:35Speaker 5: and we get to know him. We get to know
- 55:37Speaker 5: why he's that way, how it was his father. He
- 55:42Speaker 5: was innocent, but the father corrupted him, and that he
- 55:45Speaker 5: becomes a victim of circumstance. He becomes a victim of
- 55:48Speaker 5: the community of that of his circumstance.
- 55:52Speaker 3: And has a mother that was like yes, and an
- 55:55Speaker 3: uncle who was.
- 55:56Speaker 5: This way and a father who was that way, and
- 55:59Speaker 5: he grew to be Tony's still trying to wear many hats,
- 56:03Speaker 5: be the father, the best friend, the good nephew, the
- 56:07Speaker 5: good son, the good husband, and we go, God, this
- 56:10Speaker 5: guy's got the world on his shoulders. He's juggling and
- 56:13Speaker 5: he had something handed to him that he didn't want,
- 56:17Speaker 5: which was to be a made man, to be in
- 56:19Speaker 5: the mafia, and he's conflicted with his own life and
- 56:24Speaker 5: we're going along with him as through his perspectives, where
- 56:31Speaker 5: with him looking at the world through his eyes, how
- 56:34Speaker 5: he sees everybody. We know everybody through Tony's eyes. We
- 56:38Speaker 5: know Edie from Tony, we know doctor Melfief. Everything is
- 56:42Speaker 5: coming from Tony's perspective and we see him fighting the world.
- 56:45Speaker 3: So we identify how we are in our lives with
- 56:50Speaker 3: different people and differences. We put different hats.
- 56:52Speaker 5: On and we wear our mask and wear Hi tod
- 56:55Speaker 5: this one and know to that one. And he's multi dimensional,
- 57:00Speaker 5: just like we are. And he's the father. And at
- 57:03Speaker 5: dinner you see him being a dad and loving, so
- 57:05Speaker 5: you go, oh, he's not that bad.
- 57:08Speaker 3: He's a good guy. Look at him with his kid.
- 57:10Speaker 5: You look at him taking Meadow to college. But then
- 57:14Speaker 5: then the next minute he's strangling the rat, got his
- 57:17Speaker 5: bare hands, and that shows that's why he's the boss.
- 57:22Speaker 5: He didn't use a knife for gun nothing. With his
- 57:24Speaker 5: bare hands. He put that thing and he strangled him.
- 57:26Speaker 5: If he would have shot him from afar or stabbed.
- 57:29Speaker 3: Him or ran him over with a car.
- 57:31Speaker 5: And what is Benet's strong with his own hands. He
- 57:34Speaker 5: took the last breath out of that guy and felt it.
- 57:36Speaker 3: Until that guy dropped. That's power.
- 57:39Speaker 5: That's also psychotic. So now you're like fascinated, going, this
- 57:44Speaker 5: guy just went to college with his daughter and he's murdered.
- 57:47Speaker 5: Now I'm all in, who is this guy? And it's
- 57:50Speaker 5: like saying, why is are those shows on TV at night?
- 57:55Speaker 3: I never watched him.
- 57:56Speaker 5: Everybody in my family watches those murder why I walk in,
- 58:00Speaker 5: I'm like, why are you watching this before bed?
- 58:04Speaker 1: You know?
- 58:04Speaker 3: The wife could on that show whatever that show is.
- 58:07Speaker 5: So why is that universal? Why does everybody want to
- 58:10Speaker 5: know about the murderers? Why does everybody watch it? Because
- 58:12Speaker 5: it's fascinating. Tony is a fascinating character. He's a universal character.
- 58:19Speaker 7: Right, but but the writing is so good, like even
- 58:22Speaker 7: that murdercy when he murders the guy, Like the fact
- 58:25Speaker 7: that Davy Chase writes the guy going.
- 58:28Speaker 1: I saw you yesterday. I could have got you when
- 58:30Speaker 1: you're with your daughter and I didn't.
- 58:32Speaker 5: Yes, yes, yes, that's another level.
- 58:35Speaker 3: Yes, you know what you know?
- 58:37Speaker 5: Yeh. Scene always gets to me. What episode is the
- 58:41Speaker 5: hymn with with the with the Russian strip.
- 58:43Speaker 3: But when they kill the.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Russian, oh god, And that.
- 58:46Speaker 5: Gets to me and you see the human side of
- 58:48Speaker 5: him and he's struggling with it because he thinks of his.
- 58:51Speaker 3: Daughter and your girlfriend. That one always gets to me.
- 58:55Speaker 1: That, Oh my god.
- 58:56Speaker 7: And the little how good was that girl in the
- 58:58Speaker 7: parking lot and she goes to him like hey, like
- 59:00Speaker 7: she wants to like you know, and Tony's just like, hey,
- 59:04Speaker 7: you know, I get away from you whatever well before
- 59:06Speaker 7: she dies. But I mean she has that one weird
- 59:08Speaker 7: moment when I forget why, but she's like trying to
- 59:10Speaker 7: be friendly to him, and.
- 59:13Speaker 1: Yeah, like stuff.
- 59:15Speaker 6: You know, it's like it's almost like people acting without
- 59:19Speaker 6: a governor on them, right, Like that that life, right
- 59:23Speaker 6: that you kind of have your own set of rules.
- 59:24Speaker 1: Yeah, And I feel like sometimes when you watch.
- 59:26Speaker 6: That stuff, you wonder what I do in their shoes
- 59:29Speaker 6: if I didn't feel like I had the constraints of society.
- 59:32Speaker 1: Right. That's the other vicarious.
- 59:34Speaker 6: That's vicarious, Like is that pressure? Would you be any better?
- 59:38Speaker 6: Would you be any different?
- 59:39Speaker 1: Yeah? Like, well, it's like with me with Anne Marie,
- 59:41Speaker 1: I was like get me to die cold. I just
- 59:45Speaker 1: took command. Where's the ice?
- 59:52Speaker 3: What is this red sauce? You call yourself red sauce?
- 59:55Speaker 1: Where I told her? All right, I can do with this.
- 59:59Speaker 3: Bat Well, I think we should end it on that.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Thank you, guys, thanks for having med you.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: What's so amazing? Thank you? Are you right now?
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: No, I'm going home.
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: I did a set already. Well, I do early sets,
- 1:00:16Speaker 7: you know. I'm old. The village comedy.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: They saved the five.
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: Well, you're gonna have these comedy shows at those Florida
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: all those Florida retiring.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: In place villages where people they do shows like two
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: in the afternoon. Oh no outdoors. Yeah, I know.
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: A couple of guys are doing comedy, Like, how you doing.
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: I'll tell you one of the funniest. This is for
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: the old days. But I want to this old tumbler
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: they called tumbler that these old comedians for the catskills tumbler?
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: Is that?
- 1:00:54Speaker 6: Like?
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Is that? Yeah? I think so? But from the like
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: it was tny.
- 1:01:01Speaker 7: After he's at the pool doing Simon says he's to
- 1:01:03Speaker 7: a funny version of Simon says that was a big
- 1:01:05Speaker 7: thing back in the sixties and seventies.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: This Simon says that they make that was the thing
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: to get everybody together. And then they got big.
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: Jokes and this guy goes you know, folks. And the
- 1:01:16Speaker 7: best part about this is he didn't hesitate. So normally
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: you think the way to do this joke is to
- 1:01:20Speaker 7: look at somebody and then hesitate. So this guy didn't.
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: As he goes, you know, folks, I want to tell
- 1:01:26Speaker 7: you something. We have celebrities here, and I don't like
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: to point him out, but I want to point out
- 1:01:31Speaker 7: this celebrity, in my opinion, the former Averyay champion of
- 1:01:34Speaker 7: the world, in my opinion, still the everyry champion of
- 1:01:37Speaker 7: the world.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: Mister Joe Frasier.
- 1:01:38Speaker 7: I'm sorry, lady, so he said, mister Joe Frasier, I'm sorry.
- 1:01:48Speaker 7: It wouldn't be a funny mister Joe Frasier. I'm sorry, lady.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: I lived so hat.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: Who did that?
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: Some tumbler, some old guy back in the eighty one
- 1:01:59Speaker 7: middle and he get kind of a laughing. That was
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: ucond It was funny.
