- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Hey fam, welcome back.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: I am super excited to chat with you guys today because this episode has been something I have been scientifically working on in terms of the research side of my career and my enthusiasm around skin health, and it's something that's finally coming full circle and at a point where I can now share it with you guys and give you real-time proof of science in action and how this makes a difference and why it matters that we entertain skincare companies and brands that are maybe they seem a little outlandish right now in terms of the um you know the claims they're making on the research end in terms of like molecular signaling or you know just cell signaling and normal physiology.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we like to kind of brush those brands aside and say, well, this is just you know a big hypothesis, and we don't even know if this is gonna work.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: So, you know, it's it's a hypothetical.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: So here I am.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I'm gonna be very transparent with you guys and tell you exactly all the details, but I just want to preface everything by saying that there is nothing stronger than going out there and looking for you know answers and helping come helping come up with solutions, and this feeling I think every single one of us um has the right to feel, and that's why I really believe that all of us is are born as like natural scientists, you know, like just natural, inquisitive minds.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: So, anyways, without me ranting about that, um, and the whole philosophy of things, you guys know how much I love getting into like literally the philosophy of anything, but um coming back to point, what I had initiated about a year and a half, two years ago, um, yeah, 2020 actually, um, was this paper.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, actually, it was a review paper, very, very large review, the biggest review um of its kind.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Um, and it had to do with aquaporens.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Now, aquaporens are proteins, um, they're very large proteins that are found in cell membranes all over the body in almost every organ system, including the skin.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: And what I what my goal was was to basically survey all of the biomedical uh literature out there and come up with one paper that talked about all 13 classes of aquaporns.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, there are aquapores one through 13 and the different numbers, um, you know, like the different subtypes are found in different places.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: So, long story short, I went and I wrote this review, right?
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: It was a very extensive review.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: Um, it was something that even before I published it, I was already collaborating with other um teams, you know, um kind of like on an international scale and letting them know like what I was figuring out as I was reading all this literature and figuring out that, for example, aquaporn 3 is more so expressed in you know um the skin cells, right, that we always hear about and stuff, um, our epidermal cells.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: And I was able to like connect with a lot of really great teams and we were able to work together, and so that preliminary um information that I collected uh it went on to then like be something that somebody else could immediately test further on because they have the funding.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: So now I'm really excited to announce that you know, at this point, because of that research and that initial research, um, we now know that Aquaporn III is involved in um skin cancer progression, and we also know that by blocking this specific aquaporn channel, now you know, just to give you guys uh well let me finish my sentence.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: So by blocking the aquaporn channel, aquaporn three, um, this has been linked.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Um, there's a significant um, you know, some sort of a you know, there's a link, uh, and you could say correlation, I guess.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Um, but there is a link between blocking that aquaporn channel and the um time it takes for those skin, you know, skin tumors to regress or shrink.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: So this is huge, right?
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, think about it.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: If you can block something on a molecular level, and then that results in real changes of like you know, um, reduction in tumor size, and you know, just th that's a huge thing.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: So I'm really excited about this research.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm not here to take credit for it, I was just a small piece of the puzzle, but the reason I wanted to come on here was to show you guys that there is potential here.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: You know, I have interviewed so many amazing brands.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: For example, Epicutus was on our show recently.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, I had a really great time and a really great conversation with Max Will Stock, um, you know, of Epicutus and Sigum Biosciences about G protein coupled receptor uh signaling.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: And you know, if any of you listened to that episode, you know, Max went into the the science a little bit about it, and G protein coupled receptors, just like aquaphorns, I mean G proteins more so than aquaporins, are found everywhere in the body.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: So if we're able to target something like this, right, that's a big, it's a big generalized target in the sense of you know, um, really figuring out all the different subtypes which we have, you know.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Um, but my point is like if we can really figure out which ones are there in our exact um, you know, epidermal cells in the cells that we want to actually treat for skin health reasons, um, this is huge.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: And this could lead to discoveries that are non-invasive for skin cancers.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, that's the biggest thing.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, second thing is whenever you find things like this that are um, you know, really able to uh you know produce such a drastic change or such a like a relevant change, um, it's very, very promising for you know more therapeutic advances using this um information.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: So, you know, we are now figuring out aquaporin three and its role in skin.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: And you know, we we know that it's a water channel, but we also know that glycerin is involved in the movement through aquaporin III, and you know, we're figuring out all the different molecules that really go through this protein channel and how that impacts things like you know, things we hear about, like the skin barrier, you know, all of this plays into that.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: So, this is something that I just wanted to throw out there.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I wanted everyone to kind of have a little um food for thought about the biomedical research side of skin health and skin care.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Um, and just kind of keep an open mind.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: I hope you guys keep an open mind um when you're approaching products that might seem very science-y at first, but you know, um you're curious about them, uh, definitely keep an open mind because you know, I'll tell you one thing is you know, if we don't ask the questions as scientists, as consumers, then we'll never find out.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: And sometimes things can progress a lot faster than we like to say in the medical community, um, you know, or admit in the medical community.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, I never thought that within two years we would have such huge headway into this project, and you know, here we are.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: So my next uh goal is gonna be looking at, you know, in case anyone cares, um, I'm gonna be looking at heat shock proteins as well because I have a specific interest in burn traumas and all that.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna be looking at heat shock proteins, and these are proteins that get elevated in burn patients, and they are also um said to be involved in some sort of water transport.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: So, you know, once again, it it's really interesting stuff, and I just want everyone listening to realize that this podcast is not the average beauty podcast.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: We are not here to, you know, just talk about meaningless, brainless, just crap, right?
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: That we're constantly being bombarded with on social media, anyways.
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: And I'm not throwing any shade, but I'm just being keep you know, I'm being honest.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: I'm a very blunt person.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: I really just you know, when I look at the beauty industry today, all I see is uh 80% garbage, and there's 20% um of material that is being written by amazing writers and journalists or amazing editors, like we had Simone Oliver on recently from Refinery 29 Refinery is definitely in that 20%, they're an amazing publication, they put out real stuff, you know.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Um, allure is another one, like there are just so many amazing publications, but unfortunately, there are more that are just spreading lies and misinformation.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: So, you know, the few of the few publications that are there.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I really respect you guys.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: If any of you are listening in and are editors or writers for these publications, I really respect your work and I I want you guys to help us to become the number one beauty podcast because we are completely unbiased, you know.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: The number one rule in in science is you don't want the reviewer or the person who's doing the experiment or really doing the serving to have these biases, right?
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: So I just urge everyone to keep that in mind about us, you know.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: We are not beauty insiders um by career, we are not editors here or you know, um, anyone who has any kind of connections in the beauty industry before we even started this podcast, and that's what makes us so unique because every guest that we invite on here, and every guest that I have the honor and privilege of interviewing, I approach them as if I know nothing because I really don't, you know, and I think that that journey is something that not only do I really, really love about the show and um the experience of being a podcast host, but I hope you guys also enjoy that approach.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Um, I know I've gotten some great feedback from some of you, but I would love to always hear from you guys.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: I would love to always hear your suggestions for improvement, any criticism, um, you know, just anything at all.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: I love hearing from you, and I hope you guys have had a chance also to check out our second Instagram page, which is at Skincare Anarchy Podcast.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: This is a brand new design that we're rolling out with.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: It's a very art gallery-like design.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: I really wanted to do this for a long time, and we're finally, you know, kind of putting it together.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: So there are a lot of really cool things in the works for Skincare Anarchy, you guys.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: This is gonna be a very exciting year, and I think um if you stick with us and you help us grow, um, you're gonna find yourself um a part of a really, really cool publication and movement that is really rooted on what consumers need and what they want, and no fluff, no BS, just the real stuff.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: So, anyways, rant over.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Thank you guys so much for tuning in.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: And I will go ahead and I'm gonna um actually link some of these articles that I referenced in this chat for you guys if you're interested.
