- 1:09Speaker 1: We're playing the name game sort of Welcome to NFL Explained.
- 1:12Speaker 1: It's the podcast that answers your questions about the game
- 1:15Speaker 1: that we all absolutely love. Every single week, we're going
- 1:18Speaker 1: to be diving into a topic that needs some explain.
- 1:21Speaker 1: In our first episode, we actually rolled into some NFC names.
- 1:26Speaker 1: This week, we're all about the A f C. I'm
- 1:28Speaker 1: Mike Yam, She's a D D King, Kabala, Hi d D.
- 1:31Speaker 1: What's good? We obviously right. That is actually a good
- 1:36Speaker 1: way of describing our episode this week, A D D.
- 1:40Speaker 1: You and I are going to be diving into some
- 1:41Speaker 1: topics that will last for a while. So if you
- 1:43Speaker 1: miss the NFC Show, it's all good. It's available right
- 1:46Speaker 1: now and until the end of time. Because basically, you
- 1:51Speaker 1: may be playing a game of bar trivia. You may
- 1:54Speaker 1: just be trying to impress your family around the Thanksgiving
- 1:57Speaker 1: dinner table with the minutia that you know, people may
- 2:01Speaker 1: say at some point, Hey, you know, I always wondered
- 2:03Speaker 1: how did the Steelers get their name? Because the Steelers
- 2:06Speaker 1: are actually the oldest team in the American Football Conference.
- 2:10Speaker 1: They were founded in nineteen thirty three, which is the
- 2:12Speaker 1: same year as the Eagles, which we talked about in
- 2:15Speaker 1: our first episode, and we also talked about the fact
- 2:18Speaker 1: that many, many, many football teams derived their names from
- 2:23Speaker 1: baseball teams, So the Steelers were initially named after the
- 2:28Speaker 1: city's baseball team, they were the Pittsburgh Pirates. But we
- 2:30Speaker 1: already went through this, Mike I said, I don't like
- 2:33Speaker 1: when two teams from the same city playing different sports
- 2:37Speaker 1: have the same name, like the New York Giants. Very confusing,
- 2:41Speaker 1: and we did learn on episode number one with the
- 2:44Speaker 1: NFC this actually happened a whole lot. I think we're
- 2:46Speaker 1: just in a different era of sports and fandom that
- 2:50Speaker 1: I don't think fans nowadays would be okay with it.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Like once again, you're going like and thirties and forties, right,
- 2:56Speaker 1: And I'll tell you this. One thing that is very
- 2:58Speaker 1: unique about the city of Pittsburgh is that all three
- 3:00Speaker 1: professional franchises, the Pittsburgh Pirates which play baseball, the Pittsburgh Penguins,
- 3:05Speaker 1: which play hockey, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who play football,
- 3:09Speaker 1: of course, share the same colors. So this is the
- 3:12Speaker 1: black and yellow city. Actually it's black and gold. I
- 3:14Speaker 1: say black and yellow because of that was Khalifa song.
- 3:16Speaker 1: But it really is officially black and gold, black and yellow,
- 3:19Speaker 1: black and yellow, black and yellow, right, it shouldn't be
- 3:21Speaker 1: black and yellow. I'm corrected every time I say that.
- 3:24Speaker 1: But anyway, moving on, the Pittsburgh Pirates were indeed the
- 3:27Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Pirates, but they had to be called something because
- 3:30Speaker 1: otherwise you didn't know are you talking about the Pittsburgh
- 3:32Speaker 1: Pirates baseball team or were you talking about the Pittsburgh
- 3:34Speaker 1: Pirates football team. They were called the rooney Man after
- 3:36Speaker 1: team owner Arn't Rooney, and then in nineteen forty they
- 3:42Speaker 1: became the Pittsburgh Steelers, and that is because, of course
- 3:46Speaker 1: Pittsburgh is the steel City. But there's another little known fact.
- 3:51Speaker 1: The Steelers had a brief name change in nineteen forty three,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and that is because during World War Two, the Steelers
- 3:59Speaker 1: and the Eagles had to send many of their players
- 4:02Speaker 1: off to fight. They combined and they be came the Stiegels.
- 4:08Speaker 1: One of my all time favorite stories is Jane Goodell,
- 4:12Speaker 1: who of course is married to Commissioner Roger Goodell, or
- 4:15Speaker 1: is the better half of Commissioner Roger Goodell, and he
- 4:18Speaker 1: will be one of our episodes in the future. And
- 4:20Speaker 1: what he does, they're a tease right there for you.
- 4:23Speaker 1: In any case, Jane Goodell made a fabulous film a
- 4:26Speaker 1: few years ago called A Lifetime of Sundays, and she
- 4:29Speaker 1: sat down with the four Matriarchs of football that of
- 4:32Speaker 1: course is Norma Hunt, Martha Ford, Virginia McCaskey, and now
- 4:36Speaker 1: the late Pat Rooney, who we here in Pittsburgh lost
- 4:40Speaker 1: earlier this year. Well, Pat Rooney was sitting down and
- 4:43Speaker 1: she was talking about the era of the Stiegels and
- 4:45Speaker 1: the Eagles had just come off winning that amazing Super
- 4:49Speaker 1: Bowl behind Nick Foles, and Pat Rooney says on stage that,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you know, she felt as if it was almost like
- 4:58Speaker 1: the Steelers won again when the Eagles won because of
- 5:01Speaker 1: that Stiegel's history, and Virginia mccoskey looks at her and says, Pat,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you have enough trophies, and beautiful Mrs Rooney looks back
- 5:10Speaker 1: at Virginia and says, there's always room for one more,
- 5:13Speaker 1: which tells you everything you need to know about the
- 5:15Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Steelers. Get that competitive competitive juice is going, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: like that's that age old question. Is your TV too big? No?
- 5:23Speaker 1: That your TV can never be too big, especially on Sundays,
- 5:27Speaker 1: So I'm with you always that might be a guy question.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Mike, I've never asked myself that question ever.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Okay I have, And the answer is, how about this one?
- 5:35Speaker 1: Do you make too much money? No? No, that you
- 5:38Speaker 1: can always make more money. That's more maybe a universal theme.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I thought the TV thing was. You're now pointing that out.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It's not necessarily universal thing. The money thing might be
- 5:46Speaker 1: part of that. Maybe because we are both on television,
- 5:49Speaker 1: and now that you know you have these four k
- 5:51Speaker 1: a k ultra high def t V s, I don't
- 5:53Speaker 1: need my face to be any bigger in anybody's living
- 5:56Speaker 1: room than it already is. Look, I say this all
- 5:58Speaker 1: the time. I am such a great looking dude in
- 6:00Speaker 1: the dark that just unfortunately, moving on, moving on, moving on.
- 6:04Speaker 1: We were talking about rivalry these earlier. You know, before
- 6:07Speaker 1: you embarrass yourself, Mike, come here to help you out.
- 6:09Speaker 1: We're talking about rivalries, and I did make a mistake.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I said, this tells you all you need to know
- 6:13Speaker 1: about the Pittsburgh Steelers and how competitive they are. No,
- 6:16Speaker 1: you also need to know that the Pittsburgh Steelers fans
- 6:20Speaker 1: absolutely completely totally despise the fans of which franchise. That
- 6:28Speaker 1: would be the Cleveland Browns, ding Ding, ding ding Ding.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I was waiting for you, my friend, but I guess
- 6:33Speaker 1: living out in the Northwest, you don't really know how
- 6:36Speaker 1: beautiful rivalries in the A f c north are Here's
- 6:39Speaker 1: Royals on the punt, gets the kick away, driving metcalf
- 6:43Speaker 1: all the way back to the twenty five head to
- 6:45Speaker 1: the thirty outside of the thirty five, to the forty,
- 6:48Speaker 1: to the forty five of the fifty to the Steelers
- 6:51Speaker 1: territory at the forty thirty text in Believa. There you've
- 6:59Speaker 1: never seen it better the time of man Eric Metcalfer's part,
- 7:03Speaker 1: the study to its feet, it's palace the So the
- 7:13Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns joined the NFL after a nineteen fifty merger
- 7:17Speaker 1: with the All America Football Conference, and two other teams
- 7:20Speaker 1: joined the league at this time. That was the Baltimore
- 7:22Speaker 1: Colts and the San Francisco forty Niners. Now the Browns,
- 7:26Speaker 1: besides being hated and despised by any and all fans
- 7:30Speaker 1: of the Pittsburgh Steelers, have one other distinction, and that
- 7:34Speaker 1: is that they are named after a person. The Browns
- 7:38Speaker 1: are named after Paul Brown, who was the first general
- 7:41Speaker 1: manager and head coach. So you think it's a team
- 7:44Speaker 1: named after our color, but it's actually not. Was unaware,
- 7:47Speaker 1: certainly think it's really cool to have that much say
- 7:50Speaker 1: and push, to be able to say no, I got
- 7:53Speaker 1: a team, and it's named after me, So I will
- 7:56Speaker 1: take that and I like it. Of course you like it? Yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 1: I mean because well, I just can you imagine a
- 8:00Speaker 1: team the Ammers. It's a pretty good team name. I think.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I don't know who would sign up to play on
- 8:05Speaker 1: my roster and be a part of my organization. But
- 8:07Speaker 1: there's a room on the train. Remember when we talked
- 8:09Speaker 1: about the Packers. You could start a little league team
- 8:11Speaker 1: called the Yammers, and you could sponsor your little league
- 8:13Speaker 1: team and you could put Yammers on the front of jerseys.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I like where your head's at now. I just need
- 8:17Speaker 1: to figure out how to go and get that done. Um.
- 8:20Speaker 1: You know. One of the really cool things about the
- 8:21Speaker 1: NFL is you see franchise movement. You see teams and
- 8:25Speaker 1: organizations pop up, and sometimes you see some similarities in
- 8:27Speaker 1: terms of some team names and checking in. When number
- 8:30Speaker 1: three on our list is the Indianapolis Colts the Cults.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Of course, they moved to Indie from Baltimore in four
- 8:37Speaker 1: There were actually two different Baltimore Cults franchises. So here's
- 8:41Speaker 1: a little bit of a history lesson. Stick with me here,
- 8:43Speaker 1: all right. You got the Miami Seahawks of the All
- 8:46Speaker 1: America Football Conference, which d D you mentioned a little
- 8:48Speaker 1: bit earlier. They relocated to Baltimore in nineteen forty seven,
- 8:53Speaker 1: the Baltimore Colts. Where that name came from, well what
- 8:56Speaker 1: else a fan contest, and that's been a kind of
- 8:59Speaker 1: a major theme throughout the course of this episode. But
- 9:01Speaker 1: the name was meant to showcase Baltimore's area, just that
- 9:05Speaker 1: the knack that they have for horse breeding. Now, that
- 9:08Speaker 1: Colts team joined the NFL in nineteen fifty but only
- 9:11Speaker 1: lasted a season before financial issues forced them to disband.
- 9:15Speaker 1: But in nineteen fifty three, Baltimore won't. They got another
- 9:18Speaker 1: NFL franchise, and that's the Colts team of today. And
- 9:22Speaker 1: this is actually pretty cool here. The players were given
- 9:24Speaker 1: the opportunity to name this team, and they chose to
- 9:27Speaker 1: pay homage to the previous Colts team by sticking with
- 9:31Speaker 1: that name. So here we go. We got three teams,
- 9:33Speaker 1: the Steelers, the Browns, and the Cults, the only current
- 9:37Speaker 1: a f C teams that existed before the American Football
- 9:40Speaker 1: League came about in nineteen sixty and with that a
- 9:43Speaker 1: d D eight brand new teams were born, and one
- 9:47Speaker 1: of them was the Tennessee Titans of course, before they
- 9:51Speaker 1: were the Titans, they were actually the Houston Oilers and
- 9:55Speaker 1: quite successful. They won the first two a f L
- 9:57Speaker 1: championships and four division titles before the NFL merger in
- 10:01Speaker 1: nineteen seventy. But it was in nineteen seven that they
- 10:05Speaker 1: moved out of Houston to Tennessee. Now, they kept the
- 10:09Speaker 1: Oiler's name for two years. They played their first season
- 10:12Speaker 1: in Memphis, so they were, you know, the Oilers out
- 10:14Speaker 1: of Memphis, and then they went to the Vanderbilt campus
- 10:17Speaker 1: in Nashville, and they were the Oilers out of the
- 10:20Speaker 1: Vandy campus. And then they held a naming contest and
- 10:24Speaker 1: they got all sorts of submissions, things like the Tornadoes
- 10:27Speaker 1: and the copper Heads and the South Stars, which sounds
- 10:30Speaker 1: like a romance novel, and the Wranglers, but they settled
- 10:34Speaker 1: on the Tennessee Titans, and Mike, since I know you
- 10:36Speaker 1: love alliteration, I feel like that's a good one, definitely
- 10:39Speaker 1: a strong one. But like I was saying, the Titans
- 10:42Speaker 1: are not actually an original name. No they are not,
- 10:45Speaker 1: because Jets fans are like screaming, Yo, that's us, that's us,
- 10:49Speaker 1: And you're right, it's really just kind of the old
- 10:50Speaker 1: school old heads that remember the New York Titans, which
- 10:55Speaker 1: then ended up becoming the Jets. Because we'll stick with
- 10:57Speaker 1: this a f L theme here, the Jets were actually
- 10:59Speaker 1: a charter member of the a f L. The Jets
- 11:02Speaker 1: originally known as the Titans from nineteen sixty to nineteen
- 11:06Speaker 1: sixty three, but then change their name to the Jets.
- 11:09Speaker 1: This goes back to our NFC episode The Giants, named
- 11:12Speaker 1: after the skyscrapers in New York City. The Jets became
- 11:15Speaker 1: the Jets because they were playing at Chase Stadium. Flashback
- 11:18Speaker 1: to my childhood as a Mets fan and all the
- 11:19Speaker 1: games that I used to attend there, the proximity to
- 11:22Speaker 1: Lagaria Airport. If you've ever been to the old Shase Stadium,
- 11:25Speaker 1: the planes which just sort of hover and fly over
- 11:28Speaker 1: the stadium during their games. Mike, that was totally a
- 11:31Speaker 1: game that we played as kids when we went to
- 11:32Speaker 1: Shaye Stadium. It was calling out what airline it was
- 11:36Speaker 1: that was flying above Shae Stadium. Were you a Mets fan? No,
- 11:40Speaker 1: That's part of why I was looking at the planes.
- 11:42Speaker 1: That's a low blow I do miss. Everyone used to
- 11:44Speaker 1: say it's just like not a great place, but I
- 11:46Speaker 1: enjoyed it. You know, and City Field was gorgeous. But
- 11:48Speaker 1: I remember the first time that I went to City Field,
- 11:50Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, it's pretty. And Shae Stadium was
- 11:52Speaker 1: a dump, but you know what, it was our dump
- 11:55Speaker 1: and it had character. I actually love City Field, and
- 11:58Speaker 1: I think it's better than the New Yankee Stadium. There
- 12:00Speaker 1: I said it yankum a little sterile for me. I
- 12:02Speaker 1: know the tweets at Mike underscore Yeam, I'm sure I'll
- 12:04Speaker 1: get some negative one to my way. And yes, it
- 12:06Speaker 1: is partly because I am a Mets fan, but the
- 12:09Speaker 1: Jets as a football team, there were some other names
- 12:12Speaker 1: that were considered. In fact, the Dodgers were one of them.
- 12:16Speaker 1: The Gotham's, the Burroughs. You're like the Boroughs. If you're
- 12:19Speaker 1: from New York, you get at the Boroughs of New
- 12:21Speaker 1: York City. Um. But at the end of the day,
- 12:24Speaker 1: I am all about the Jets and the team name
- 12:26Speaker 1: because of the Shade Stadium connection, which to me, a
- 12:29Speaker 1: d D just felt really fitting. And I think that's
- 12:31Speaker 1: one of the other cool things about some of the
- 12:33Speaker 1: history of the names that we continue to unveil on
- 12:37Speaker 1: this podcast, what they mean to the specific regions. At
- 12:41Speaker 1: times just kind of a cool connection that they're able
- 12:44Speaker 1: to establish. But we're gonna keep on going in the Northeast.
- 12:47Speaker 1: We're gonna give it to history behind some team names
- 12:50Speaker 1: in the a f C. As we continue to roll
- 12:52Speaker 1: on this podcast, will corral heard of Buffalo and we'll
- 12:55Speaker 1: get to a proposed team name that was so bad
- 12:58Speaker 1: the NFL had to step in. America's most reliable network

- 14:42Speaker 1: The game is over. The Bills have one a In
- 14:45Speaker 1: one of the most dramatic finishes in Buffalo Bills football history.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Jim Kelly ran for the touchdown. What an unbelievable finish.
- 14:55Speaker 1: The Bills have won it on the final play of
- 14:58Speaker 1: the game. It is the NFL Explained podcast. Mike gam
- 15:05Speaker 1: In d D. Kika Bala with you. We are going
- 15:07Speaker 1: through team names and the history behind those names. Were
- 15:10Speaker 1: sticking with the a f C. If you're an NFC fan,
- 15:13Speaker 1: believe me, you still got an opportunity to hear our
- 15:15Speaker 1: first episode still available for listen because they're always available
- 15:20Speaker 1: because their podcast. But A D D. The Buffalo Bills.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I think it's kind of obvious, isn't it, Like we're
- 15:24Speaker 1: just in that area of the country. So back in
- 15:27Speaker 1: the day, they were just buffaloes all over the place, right, Uh,
- 15:30Speaker 1: not quite about the Buffaloes. But Mike, I know that.
- 15:32Speaker 1: I told you the Browns were the only team named
- 15:35Speaker 1: after a person, Paul Brown. But the Buffalo Bills were
- 15:40Speaker 1: kind of sort of named after a person to see.
- 15:43Speaker 1: William Frederick Cody was an American soldier and a bison
- 15:48Speaker 1: hunter and a performer, and his nickname was the Buffalo Bills.
- 15:54Speaker 1: So when Buffalo had an All America Football Conference team,
- 15:58Speaker 1: they named it the Buffalo Bills. I actually just thought
- 16:01Speaker 1: there'd be a little bit more behind it. I don't know,
- 16:03Speaker 1: like a fan deal. I'm just imagining a herd of
- 16:07Speaker 1: wild buffalo stampeding through and kind of hanging out, and
- 16:12Speaker 1: I'm struggling. I'm generally a creative person, but I'm not
- 16:15Speaker 1: seeing it. Creativity is actually part of how the Patriots
- 16:18Speaker 1: got their name, which is sort of odd here. So
- 16:21Speaker 1: originally they were the Boston Patriots. In VY one, that
- 16:24Speaker 1: Patriots name came Yeah, you guessed another team naming contest.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Pat Patriot, which is the team's logo of a minute
- 16:33Speaker 1: man sort of snapping a football, was actually designed by
- 16:36Speaker 1: a Boston Globe reporter, Phil Bissell. He's the one that
- 16:40Speaker 1: sort of sketched that deal. What's interesting to me, when
- 16:42Speaker 1: I was growing up as a kid, we would have
- 16:44Speaker 1: NFL pencils, so you get your favorite team and the
- 16:46Speaker 1: logos and the whole deal. And I remember seeing Pat
- 16:50Speaker 1: Patriot all over these pencils that a couple of the
- 16:53Speaker 1: kids in my class would have, so it always just
- 16:54Speaker 1: sort of resonates with me. But the Patriots actually referred
- 16:58Speaker 1: to the columnists of the Thirteen Colonies, who rebeled obviously
- 17:01Speaker 1: against the British during the American Revolution. So knowing this,
- 17:05Speaker 1: I sort of feel there's some war time ties that
- 17:07Speaker 1: we can come up with. But I look this up
- 17:10Speaker 1: at d D and I thought it was pretty cool.
- 17:11Speaker 1: When the NFL and the a f L merger back
- 17:14Speaker 1: in nine seventy went down, the Patriots replaced in the
- 17:17Speaker 1: a f C East and seventy one, they moved to Foxborough.
- 17:20Speaker 1: When they went and made the move, they wanted to
- 17:23Speaker 1: change the name. They announced they were going to change
- 17:25Speaker 1: their name to the Boston Patriots to the Base State Patriots,
- 17:30Speaker 1: after the state of Massachusetts. How about this, like, how
- 17:33Speaker 1: bad does your team name have to be where the
- 17:36Speaker 1: NFL goes? No, no, no no, no, that's not happening, because
- 17:39Speaker 1: that's what happened in this instance. The NFL actually rejected
- 17:42Speaker 1: it and they settled on just naming the team after
- 17:45Speaker 1: the region. So that's how we get the New England
- 17:48Speaker 1: Patriots the base state. How many people do you think
- 17:51Speaker 1: in America right now could identify the base state. I mean,
- 17:55Speaker 1: I get thrown off when I hear like, you know here,
- 17:58Speaker 1: base state. The first thing I think of is the
- 18:00Speaker 1: Bay area. But yeah, the base No, I'm with the
- 18:04Speaker 1: New England thing. I mean, I may I don't must
- 18:05Speaker 1: think of the Chesapeake Bay before I thought of the
- 18:08Speaker 1: Bay in Massachusetts, because I guess that tells you how
- 18:11Speaker 1: little I know about state nicknames. Hey, it could have
- 18:13Speaker 1: been worse. They could have been named after some sort
- 18:15Speaker 1: of like t situation and going on, like the tea
- 18:18Speaker 1: party kind of thing. I mentioned the the a f L,
- 18:21Speaker 1: and I think what's sort of interesting about the merger.
- 18:24Speaker 1: The Chargers kind of get thrown into the mix here
- 18:26Speaker 1: because they were actually a charter member of the a
- 18:28Speaker 1: f L. They started playing in Los Angeles sixty that
- 18:32Speaker 1: lasted a whopping one campaign before they decided on San Diego.
- 18:38Speaker 1: But they became part of the NFL with that nineteen
- 18:40Speaker 1: seventy merger. Team owner Baron Hilton he liked charge you
- 18:44Speaker 1: know that bugle cry, so the team was actually named
- 18:48Speaker 1: the Chargers. They stayed in San Diego till obviously moved
- 18:53Speaker 1: back to Los Angeles. But random as a guy who
- 18:56Speaker 1: actually covered the Pack twelve for almost ten years, for me,
- 18:59Speaker 1: it's kind of cool. You got Dan Fouts resurrecting the
- 19:01Speaker 1: franchise back in the seventies, sort of a duck guy,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and now it's just an Herbert coming on like Gangbusters.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Of feels like he could potentially do the same type
- 19:09Speaker 1: of thing. So some West Coast connections there as we
- 19:12Speaker 1: focus in on this Chargers team, I do still struggle.
- 19:15Speaker 1: The Charger part is not hard for me. The San
- 19:17Speaker 1: Diego l A part is hard for me. I have
- 19:20Speaker 1: been known to say San Diego Chargers when I should
- 19:23Speaker 1: have said Los Angeles Chargers. Enough time has passed, I
- 19:26Speaker 1: feel like I should. Yeah, But it's like the attachment,
- 19:28Speaker 1: right Like, as much as team names come to fruition
- 19:32Speaker 1: as we're discussing them on this podcast, like their city
- 19:35Speaker 1: is also part of that identity. Like can you imagine
- 19:38Speaker 1: if the Steelers were not in Pittsburgh right Like, it
- 19:40Speaker 1: wouldn't feel necessarily right, It wouldn't be the Steelers. Yeah,
- 19:44Speaker 1: you have this vibe around it, So I'm with you.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I can understand why you still associate city and team name,
- 19:50Speaker 1: which is why when the Browns moved to Baltimore they
- 19:52Speaker 1: did change their name. But we'll get to that in
- 19:54Speaker 1: just a little bit. Before then, as we were talking
- 19:57Speaker 1: about how teams are affiliated with their cities and have
- 20:00Speaker 1: a connection, it's the perfect segue, my friend to the
- 20:03Speaker 1: Kansas City Chiefs. Now, originally the Kansas City Chiefs were
- 20:08Speaker 1: in Dallas, and they weren't the Chiefs. They were the Texans.
- 20:11Speaker 1: But then in nineteen sixty three, the Dallas Texans moved
- 20:14Speaker 1: to Kansas City, and you certainly weren't going to call
- 20:16Speaker 1: a team from Kansas City the Texans, were you. I mean,
- 20:18Speaker 1: that seems a little ridiculous. To the team's owner, who
- 20:21Speaker 1: was Lamar Hunt, considered other names, and you know, being
- 20:25Speaker 1: in Kansas City, he thought maybe the Royals, only there's
- 20:28Speaker 1: already a baseball team called the Kansas City Royals. He
- 20:31Speaker 1: thought about the Stars, he thought about the Mules, the
- 20:34Speaker 1: Kansas City Mules. But he settled on the Chiefs for
- 20:39Speaker 1: one main reason, and that's because there was a very
- 20:41Speaker 1: large Native American population in the area. But it's also
- 20:46Speaker 1: because the mayor of Kansas City at the time, who
- 20:49Speaker 1: was very instrumental in luring that team from Dallas to
- 20:54Speaker 1: Kansas City. One guest, Mike, what was his nickname? The Chief?
- 20:59Speaker 1: Ding Ding ding ming Ning. Good job, Mike. Are you
- 21:02Speaker 1: the type of person to do that's good with names
- 21:04Speaker 1: in general? Like people's names? I try to be, But
- 21:08Speaker 1: now we need to know so many names that I
- 21:10Speaker 1: feel context matters. It does. I just hear the Chief
- 21:15Speaker 1: and I automatically start thinking about if you don't know
- 21:17Speaker 1: someone's name and you say, oh, thanks, chief, Like it
- 21:20Speaker 1: kind of has that vibe to it, doesn't it. Have
- 21:22Speaker 1: you ever called someone chief not knowing their name. No,
- 21:24Speaker 1: But remember I live in Pittsburgh and the original owner
- 21:28Speaker 1: of the Steelers, Art Rooney, was the Chief. So when
- 21:31Speaker 1: I hear someone say the chief, I inevitably think of
- 21:34Speaker 1: Art Rooney. I've never called anybody chief. I've called people bud,
- 21:38Speaker 1: like hey, Bud, Hey, buddy. But now I sound like
- 21:40Speaker 1: John Dorsey, who have called everybody buddy boy, Yeah, Bud, Bud. Yeah,
- 21:45Speaker 1: I've used buddy before. I call my son buddy. I
- 21:47Speaker 1: also call him Mr. Sometimes that means let me right along.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Do you have something about Mr? Davis? Uh? Yeah? Actually
- 21:54Speaker 1: kind of cool and random. The Oakland Raiders, they were
- 21:57Speaker 1: almost named the Signors. I mean that to me is
- 22:02Speaker 1: really weird because it leads a little bit to the
- 22:04Speaker 1: original Spanish settles that were in California. And yeah, once
- 22:08Speaker 1: again another naming contest. It was submission that was in
- 22:11Speaker 1: the Oakland Tribune. Locally, people actually thought a d D
- 22:15Speaker 1: that the results were fixed, and people just weren't a
- 22:19Speaker 1: huge fan of it, so they were teasing the name
- 22:21Speaker 1: the Raiders eventually decided to be the Raiders and chose
- 22:24Speaker 1: that name over the Lakers. That would have been a
- 22:27Speaker 1: weird vibe to think about the basketball team and then
- 22:29Speaker 1: think about the football team. But wait, wait, the l
- 22:32Speaker 1: A Lakers are named the Lakers because they started in Minneapolis,
- 22:35Speaker 1: where there are so many lakes. Why would an Oakland
- 22:38Speaker 1: football team be called the Lakers? What are the lakes? Yeah,
- 22:42Speaker 1: I don't know what you got? The got the bay
- 22:44Speaker 1: that's not really a lake, but that's not a lake. Yeah,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I don't Okay, anyway, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I mean, it's a good thing that didn't choose it
- 22:51Speaker 1: because it really makes absolutely zero sense, the Oakland Lakers,
- 22:54Speaker 1: where there are no lakes. That would not have been good.
- 22:56Speaker 1: But the team actually did play in l A two
- 22:59Speaker 1: back to Oakland and then obviously moved to Vegas. And
- 23:04Speaker 1: I know every time I watched NFL Network and Maurice
- 23:06Speaker 1: Jones Drew is talking about the stadium, he tells everyone
- 23:09Speaker 1: to go find the brick outside of the stadium with
- 23:12Speaker 1: his name on it, so that will be one of
- 23:13Speaker 1: my new adventures the next time I am in Vegas.
- 23:17Speaker 1: But I do know that we're all about team names.
- 23:19Speaker 1: But when I was doing some research, I actually found
- 23:20Speaker 1: something kind of cool about their history. I was thinking, well,
- 23:23Speaker 1: why Oakland, Like, to me, that's kind of random. Well,
- 23:27Speaker 1: it turns out a d D that the Chargers owner,
- 23:29Speaker 1: as Barren Hilton, was so upset that his team was
- 23:32Speaker 1: on an island on the West coast in the a
- 23:34Speaker 1: f L, he actually threatened to forfeit his franchise unless
- 23:39Speaker 1: they put another team out on the West coast. So
- 23:41Speaker 1: there wasn't actually even a stadium in Oakland ready for football.
- 23:45Speaker 1: The a f L was just like, Yo, Oakland, that's
- 23:47Speaker 1: all you guys. They became the eighth a f L team.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Even more wild to me, cal you see Berkeley, they
- 23:54Speaker 1: refused to let the Raiders play at Memorial Stadium. At
- 23:58Speaker 1: one point the team was actually playing in San Francisco
- 24:00Speaker 1: at Candlestick Park. Now, I've been to a ton of
- 24:03Speaker 1: AL football games over the last few years in Berkeley,
- 24:06Speaker 1: it was just wild to me that we could have
- 24:08Speaker 1: been talking about the Raiders at some point in the
- 24:11Speaker 1: history of their team playing at Memorial Stadium. Well, Mike,
- 24:14Speaker 1: I love that you just use the word wild, because
- 24:18Speaker 1: the Denver Broncos, we're thinking all about Denver's wild West heritage.
- 24:25Speaker 1: When they picked their name, they also had a team
- 24:29Speaker 1: naming contest, and the winning entry in nineteen sixty when
- 24:34Speaker 1: they had their brand new Denver AFL franchise was the Broncos,
- 24:39Speaker 1: and that, of course is because of the idea that
- 24:44Speaker 1: a Bronco is an untamed horse and a wild horse,
- 24:49Speaker 1: and this was the idea of what sort of football
- 24:51Speaker 1: team it should be is you know, wild and untamed,
- 24:55Speaker 1: and they were known actually as the Wild Broncos and
- 24:59Speaker 1: not just the Broncos locally. Originally, to me, that doesn't
- 25:03Speaker 1: really capture that whole region, like you know, we have
- 25:07Speaker 1: the Miami Heat and basketball, like I feel like Denver
- 25:08Speaker 1: could have been like the Blizzards or something along those lines,
- 25:11Speaker 1: while Broncos just doesn't have that same ring to it.
- 25:14Speaker 1: But again, that goes back to weather, and I thought
- 25:16Speaker 1: we established that team is named after weather events. Feels
- 25:19Speaker 1: a little bit weird. So you said that I didn't
- 25:21Speaker 1: agree with it. That's why I said if we went
- 25:23Speaker 1: down that path, I would have been okay with it.
- 25:26Speaker 1: I don't think there's any more weather events for the
- 25:28Speaker 1: rest of this podcast, but there are plenty of teams
- 25:31Speaker 1: in the a f C still remaining on our list
- 25:34Speaker 1: coming up a d D. The team megan the Stallion
- 25:37Speaker 1: would have actually been a huge fan of if things
- 25:40Speaker 1: actually played out a certain way. If that's not a
- 25:42Speaker 1: tease that I need to pay off, I don't know
- 25:44Speaker 1: in the history of that podcast what needs to be
- 25:47Speaker 1: paid off more than that. This podcast is sponsored by Kindrel.

- 28:08Speaker 1: our list. Nineteen sixty six, that as well, before I
- 28:11Speaker 1: was ever born, which also happens to be the same
- 28:13Speaker 1: year as the first Super Bowl Packers. They beat the
- 28:15Speaker 1: Chief thirty five to ten. That's one of the Miami
- 28:18Speaker 1: Dolphins actually became a thing. The name was popular in
- 28:22Speaker 1: a naming contest among fans since dolphins and I did
- 28:26Speaker 1: not know this, but they are the smartest and the
- 28:28Speaker 1: fastest creatures of the sea. Jason Momoa, He's gotta be
- 28:32Speaker 1: thinking like Aquaman, like are you kidding me? Like I'm
- 28:34Speaker 1: fast to the Aquaman would know? Would that have been
- 28:37Speaker 1: a decent name? I kind of feel like that would
- 28:39Speaker 1: have been sort of relatively cool. Um, we told you
- 28:41Speaker 1: a little bit earlier. But just to revisit this and
- 28:44Speaker 1: to bring it full circle, Miami once did have a
- 28:47Speaker 1: team before the Miami Dolphins, and that was in the
- 28:50Speaker 1: All American Football Conference. That team was named the Seahawks
- 28:53Speaker 1: in six and then I went through that history. They
- 28:56Speaker 1: became the first edition of the Baltimore Colts, because yes,
- 29:00Speaker 1: there was a second edition of that team add You know,
- 29:03Speaker 1: growing up, I feel like they were so many Dolphins
- 29:07Speaker 1: fans simply because they loved those colors and that logo.
- 29:11Speaker 1: There was something about that teal and orange that appealed
- 29:15Speaker 1: to little kids in elementary school. Yeah, and Dan Marino
- 29:18Speaker 1: just as cool. You think two is going to be
- 29:20Speaker 1: like Dan Marino? Is he going to have just as
- 29:22Speaker 1: much of a cult following? You know, our NFL research
- 29:24Speaker 1: team does a tremendous job and sent some stats on
- 29:28Speaker 1: some comparisons between TWA and Marino in the rookie seasons.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Oddly very similar numbers. I think I even saw that
- 29:35Speaker 1: graphic on NFL now cross promotion. Baby. I was on
- 29:37Speaker 1: a plane with Dan Marino recently and it was quite interesting.
- 29:40Speaker 1: There was a police officer who was there to make
- 29:42Speaker 1: sure that nobody bothered him while we were waiting at
- 29:44Speaker 1: the gate to get on the plane. And let me
- 29:47Speaker 1: tell you this is such a like classic Pittsburgh story.
- 29:50Speaker 1: One Dan Marino got on the plane, there were all
- 29:52Speaker 1: these other passengers who went to go talk to the
- 29:54Speaker 1: police officer like it was a contact. High. Wow, you
- 29:57Speaker 1: were close to Dan Marino, so let me talk to
- 29:59Speaker 1: you anyway. I died speaking that also means add what
- 30:04Speaker 1: she left out the story is that it was a
- 30:07Speaker 1: private jet, that that's how it gets around. So it
- 30:10Speaker 1: just happened to be at the gate where, not even
- 30:12Speaker 1: in my dreams. But speaking of larger than life figures,
- 30:18Speaker 1: let's go back to a gentleman we talked about earlier,
- 30:20Speaker 1: Paul Brown. Paul Brown, of course, is the reason that
- 30:23Speaker 1: the Cleveland Browns are named the Cleveland Browns. The Cleveland
- 30:26Speaker 1: Browns are the only team that are named after a
- 30:28Speaker 1: person who is Paul Brown. But even though the Cleveland
- 30:32Speaker 1: Browns named themselves after Paul Brown, they had a very
- 30:35Speaker 1: acrimonious split. Art Model came in as an owner of
- 30:39Speaker 1: the Browns. He and Paul Brown had some friction over control.
- 30:44Speaker 1: The players of the Cleveland brown started feeling like maybe
- 30:47Speaker 1: Paul Brown was no longer meant to be their coach,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and Paul Brown left town. He left town and Cincinnati
- 30:56Speaker 1: decided to launch a new franchise. Paul Brown became an
- 31:00Speaker 1: investor in the franchise in Cincinnati. He became the general
- 31:04Speaker 1: manager and the coach, and he got power over what
- 31:08Speaker 1: he should name his team. And there were again fans
- 31:12Speaker 1: that wanted input. The most popular suggestion at the time
- 31:15Speaker 1: was the buck Eyes. Of course, you know they Ohio
- 31:18Speaker 1: State buck Eyes. Yes, but Paul Brown, in honor of
- 31:22Speaker 1: a football team that had played in Cincinnati in the
- 31:25Speaker 1: late nineteen thirties, said no, no, no, we are going
- 31:28Speaker 1: to be the Cincinnati Bengals, And that name, unfortunately, conjures
- 31:33Speaker 1: up things that I don't think Paul Brown or his
- 31:35Speaker 1: son Mike Brown, who was still in Cincinnati, really would
- 31:38Speaker 1: like at the moment. But it may be a new
- 31:40Speaker 1: day in Cincinnati with Joe Burrow back healthy and you know,
- 31:45Speaker 1: doing all sorts of interesting things. Oh, there's some weapons
- 31:47Speaker 1: for Joe Burrow. Maybe not as much protection up front Penassill,
- 31:50Speaker 1: although Detroit fans probably smiling ear to ear with regard
- 31:54Speaker 1: to that selection. But we'll just move on to the
- 31:56Speaker 1: team names. I don't want to be second guessing organizations here.
- 31:59Speaker 1: The Jacksonville Jags came into existence same year as the Panthers,
- 32:04Speaker 1: part of that expansion, but the name was actually the result.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Oh my god, I'm almost getting like weirded out about
- 32:10Speaker 1: the amount of naming contests that have taken place to
- 32:14Speaker 1: name so many of these franchises. But I love it. Look,
- 32:18Speaker 1: you talked about this earlier Mike, fans say, yes, fans
- 32:21Speaker 1: are the ones that are going to be buying the
- 32:23Speaker 1: team gear, buying the jerseys. They should have a say
- 32:26Speaker 1: in what name they want across the front of their shirt,
- 32:29Speaker 1: and they have. And we have gone through this theme
- 32:32Speaker 1: a lot as we've named some of these teams. I
- 32:35Speaker 1: just think sometimes it almost becomes less creative of a
- 32:39Speaker 1: process if it's just sort of a contest. But nonetheless,
- 32:42Speaker 1: this is where we net out with a lot of
- 32:43Speaker 1: these teams. But the original logo had to be changed
- 32:47Speaker 1: because of the resemblance that they had to be. Jaguar
- 32:50Speaker 1: Car Company, by the way, I would love an F type.
- 32:53Speaker 1: I would love an F type. They say to speak
- 32:56Speaker 1: things that you want into existence, So I'm going to
- 32:58Speaker 1: do that a couple more times during this podcast. We've
- 33:01Speaker 1: now established that Mike loves TVs, he loves fast cards,
- 33:05Speaker 1: and he's you know, not playing against type at all.
- 33:08Speaker 1: I just I'm like simple minded like that, like cool gadgets, cars,
- 33:12Speaker 1: wine and some sports like and I am a very
- 33:15Speaker 1: happy human being. The Ford Motor Company, by the way,
- 33:17Speaker 1: at one time talk about history lessons, here was the
- 33:20Speaker 1: parents company of Jaguar, and they actually were the ones
- 33:23Speaker 1: who are like, no, no, no, dude, like that logo
- 33:25Speaker 1: is too close to our logo. What is awesome about
- 33:28Speaker 1: this story? And I hope many facets of our society
- 33:31Speaker 1: learned from this. No lawsuit was brought to trial both
- 33:35Speaker 1: of these two parties. They negotiated an agreement. Jaguar actually
- 33:39Speaker 1: became the official car of the Jaguars football team. Team
- 33:43Speaker 1: actually redesigned the uniforms. Everyone lives happily ever after, and
- 33:47Speaker 1: we didn't get the crazy lawsuit. Like to me, like,
- 33:50Speaker 1: that's just a huge one. It is just a huge win.
- 33:52Speaker 1: And now all of a sudden, there's pressure on this
- 33:53Speaker 1: team to sort of get out of a little bit
- 33:56Speaker 1: of a funk because they're one of just four franchises
- 33:58Speaker 1: never to be in a Super Bowl. Trevor Yo pressures
- 34:02Speaker 1: on Buddy. Honestly, I feel like the pressure is on
- 34:04Speaker 1: producer Kurt right now because my takeaway from that entire
- 34:07Speaker 1: story is the whole idea of an official car. I mean,
- 34:11Speaker 1: why can't the NFL Explained podcast have an official car? Kurt?
- 34:16Speaker 1: Can you get on that? Maybe F type? I want
- 34:19Speaker 1: an F type. I have an F type Speaking into existence, Mike,
- 34:23Speaker 1: you mentioned wine somebody else who really enjoys his wine
- 34:27Speaker 1: is Ravens current owner Steve Bashotti. But the Ravens actually
- 34:31Speaker 1: came into existence under the previous owner, and that is
- 34:35Speaker 1: art Model. Remember art Model from my story about Paul
- 34:38Speaker 1: Brown and the Bengals are Model. Paul Brown didn't get
- 34:40Speaker 1: along so well. Well, the city of Cleveland decided it
- 34:44Speaker 1: doesn't really love Art Model either, because one night, in
- 34:47Speaker 1: the middle of the night, he decided to spirit his
- 34:49Speaker 1: team away from Cleveland and take it to Baltimore. Now,
- 34:51Speaker 1: it was decided that that club in Baltimore would be
- 34:55Speaker 1: considered a new franchise and therefore needed a new name.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Art Model thought, hey, maybe I can buy the Colts
- 35:04Speaker 1: name back. But the Olds who you spoke about earlier
- 35:07Speaker 1: had moved on to Indianapolis, and Indianapolis didn't want to
- 35:10Speaker 1: let go of its name the Colts. So our Model
- 35:13Speaker 1: turned to what Mike literature And by the way, this
- 35:17Speaker 1: is one of the coolest naming stories that we have.
- 35:22Speaker 1: I actually love this connection. It was actually a naming contest,
- 35:26Speaker 1: and the submission that one was indeed from literature, and
- 35:30Speaker 1: that is the Raven. And the Raven was inspired by,
- 35:34Speaker 1: of course Edgar Allen pose, the raven It beat out
- 35:38Speaker 1: the Baltimore Americans, It beat out the Marauders. You think
- 35:42Speaker 1: about who the Baltimore Ravens have been since their inception,
- 35:47Speaker 1: I mean, you go back to the days of coach
- 35:49Speaker 1: Brian Billick and Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis to who
- 35:53Speaker 1: they are now under John Harbaugh, and again, can't think
- 35:56Speaker 1: of a more fitting name, a more fitting logo, a
- 36:00Speaker 1: more fitting mascot. They are absolutely the Ravens. Yeah, and
- 36:04Speaker 1: I love that literature aspect. Although outside of the raven
- 36:07Speaker 1: I don't know if I could recite or name another
- 36:10Speaker 1: Edgar Allan Poe work. The point is I know that one,
- 36:12Speaker 1: and it works really well for that football team, The
- 36:15Speaker 1: Houston Texans, all right, a little bit more of a
- 36:18Speaker 1: history lesson for a younger audience that might not be
- 36:21Speaker 1: super familiar. Texans approved in two thousands to the Houston Oilers,
- 36:25Speaker 1: moved to Nashville became the Titans. As a DV told
- 36:29Speaker 1: us a little bit earlier here at the Texans were
- 36:32Speaker 1: actually added to the league to make up the same
- 36:34Speaker 1: thirty two team league that we actually have and love today.
- 36:38Speaker 1: The team's owner, Bob McNair actually chose that name over
- 36:43Speaker 1: the Apollos, And here's the payoff of my making the
- 36:46Speaker 1: Stallion tease. The Stallions was one of those names that
- 36:50Speaker 1: they actually consider now. I don't know how savage welcome
- 36:54Speaker 1: to the play and the pun uh that would have
- 36:57Speaker 1: been for this team, But the point is the Houston
- 36:59Speaker 1: Texans sort of net out with I think a fitting
- 37:02Speaker 1: name for their organization. The Apollos would have been cooled,
- 37:04Speaker 1: the Stallions would have been really cool, but they become
- 37:07Speaker 1: the six pro team to ever use that name, which
- 37:10Speaker 1: to me is also kind of a cool little nugget there.
- 37:13Speaker 1: You know what would be interesting and we should have
- 37:14Speaker 1: done this actually is what was the success rate of
- 37:18Speaker 1: the previous five Texans teams? I mean, was that a
- 37:21Speaker 1: good name? Is that a lucky name? Is the Texans
- 37:23Speaker 1: a lucky name? I don't know the answer to that.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I hope that this Texans team finds some luck in
- 37:29Speaker 1: the very near future, because they haven't had it seems
- 37:32Speaker 1: like a ton of that add name game. Officially, now
- 37:36Speaker 1: in the books, we have gone through the NFC, we
- 37:38Speaker 1: have gone through the a f C. We're just scratching
