- 0:00Speaker 1: I want to talk about generational wealth.
- 0:02Speaker 2: And I kind of want to change the phrase to
- 0:04Speaker 2: sustainable wealth because you have seven kids, five grandkids.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Seven and seven. Seven and seven now? Yeah, they had
- 0:10Speaker 1: two more. Two more.
- 0:12Speaker 3: They little machines over there right now cranking them out.
- 0:15Speaker 2: And so I'm interested because obviously maybe your children have
- 0:19Speaker 2: seen some of the setbacks that you've had, but your
- 0:22Speaker 2: grandchildren will never see it.
- 0:23Speaker 1: They don't know anything about that. And so it's tough
- 0:26Speaker 1: for them.
- 0:26Speaker 2: To understand the type of perseverance, the type of determination,
- 0:31Speaker 2: resiliency to sustain the things you've been through. So how
- 0:34Speaker 2: do we teach from what you've been through to them?
- 0:39Speaker 1: You know, man, I ain't figured that out yet because.
- 0:45Speaker 3: There's even a hiccup between not the grandkids, but my
- 0:48Speaker 3: own kids. Right, right. Okay, because look, bro, most of
- 0:52Speaker 3: us that are successful today oftentimes are the first ones
- 0:57Speaker 3: in our family to be successful. I'm pretty sure before
- 1:01Speaker 3: Rick Ross hit it, it wasn't no more. I know
- 1:04Speaker 3: before Jay-Z hit it, it wasn't no more in his family.
- 1:07Speaker 3: You know, we ain't got nobody to go to to
- 1:09Speaker 3: figure this thing out. So what happens is, and then
- 1:13Speaker 3: you say, as most good parents, I want my children
- 1:17Speaker 3: to have a better life than the one I had.
- 1:20Speaker 3: So you try to protect your children from the hustling
- 1:24Speaker 3: grit that you was under. You know, my kids ain't
- 1:26Speaker 3: got to come up like me, figure it out and
- 1:29Speaker 3: work through this and work like that. But in that, though,
- 1:33Speaker 3: you've made a mistake. Because now, see, all of my
- 1:38Speaker 3: children live their life as high acrobats with a net.
- 1:44Speaker 3: So if they lose grip of the handle, daddy down
- 1:47Speaker 3: there got a net.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I ain't have no net.
- 1:50Speaker 3: So I was a high wire act, and when I
- 1:52Speaker 3: slipped off, my ass hit the ground, had to get repaired,
- 1:56Speaker 3: then climb.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Back up there.
- 1:58Speaker 3: They got a safety belt on, they on the hunt,
- 2:00Speaker 3: they doing wild ass flips.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Oh, there wasn't no bar, oh!
- 2:04Speaker 3: They hit the thing and the little cable pick them
- 2:06Speaker 3: back up. And it's messed up, man. Because you, and
- 2:12Speaker 3: I've talked about this with all the brothers, I know
- 2:15Speaker 3: that's successful. I don't know nobody that figured this one out, man.
- 2:20Speaker 3: How do we teach our children the hustle and grind
- 2:25Speaker 3: when we trying to keep them out of the hustle
- 2:27Speaker 3: and grind?
- 2:28Speaker 1: You understand?
- 2:29Speaker 3: Why would you not give your child an allowance and
- 2:32Speaker 3: you have it?
- 2:33Speaker 1: Why would you not?
- 2:34Speaker 3: So now, plus, you want them in the best schools, right?
- 2:37Speaker 3: So now you got them in school with these white kids.
- 2:40Speaker 3: They sitting up in here with the latest on iPads, iPhones.
- 2:44Speaker 3: You can't send your little black ass kid up there
- 2:46Speaker 3: without that because you're trying to teach him how to
- 2:47Speaker 3: be tough, strong, wicked. No, you got to put his
- 2:51Speaker 3: little punk ass in the same outfit. You know, come on, man.
- 2:56Speaker 3: You can't have your child up there looking crazy. But
- 2:59Speaker 3: now you mad because they ain't got the same grit
- 3:04Speaker 3: you got, the same hustle. Like, I look at them all, man,
- 3:08Speaker 3: and I just go, I'm proud of what they're becoming,
- 3:15Speaker 3: but I know, man, That if something go really wrong
- 3:21Speaker 3: for them, they got me. But when something went really
- 3:25Speaker 3: wrong for me, my answer just had to live in
- 3:27Speaker 3: my car. I couldn't go to my daddy and get
- 3:30Speaker 3: a thousand for no apartment. Look, man, I was in
- 3:33Speaker 3: college for three years before I flunked out. My father
- 3:37Speaker 3: sent me money one time. He sent it in an
- 3:42Speaker 3: envelope and it had two index cards. And when I
- 3:45Speaker 3: opened it up, It had a flat, crisp, $ 5 bill
- 3:51Speaker 3: in it. And the note on the index card was,
- 3:56Speaker 3: this shit gonna have to stop. Dog. Hey man, you
- 4:07Speaker 3: going too far with this shit. This shit got to stop.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Five dollars, man. Three years of college, he.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Sent a five dollar bill and that was the message
- 4:18Speaker 3: on the card. I opened that card, I went.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Man, the deal. This shit got to stop.
- 4:25Speaker 3: I had a job all through college bought books everything
- 4:31Speaker 3: my father give.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Me nothing what nothing something to.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Be going look man my kid tatted car failed to
- 4:42Speaker 3: pay their insurance because they forgot they come to me
- 4:44Speaker 3: we gotta get another car Well, you ain't finna.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Drive none of mine. I don't have cars you can drive.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You already know.
- 4:51Speaker 3: None of my children, here's the only thing, none of
- 4:54Speaker 3: my children have ever driven one of my cars. Because
- 4:57Speaker 3: I don't have a drivable car. I ain't got no
- 5:00Speaker 3: car you can go scrape. I got cars. See, and
- 5:04Speaker 3: people ask me all the time, man, why you buy
- 5:06Speaker 3: such expensive cars? Cause if this all go away one
- 5:12Speaker 3: day and I got to go back to living in
- 5:14Speaker 3: a car, That motherfucker gonna.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Be nice. Phantom, I'm gonna be in the backseat of
- 5:22Speaker 1: a phantom. Stretched out with a refrigerator. I got a
- 5:26Speaker 1: refrigerator in there. I got lights in the ceiling. That's
- 5:30Speaker 1: what I'm gonna be home to see.
- 5:35Speaker 3: So quit asking me why I spent so much money
- 5:38Speaker 3: on the car cuz I gotta go live back.
- 5:40Speaker 1: In that.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Thing again I know.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Laurie and yourself have gone into business with moon ultra
- 5:51Speaker 2: so what I mean, what's that process like knowing that
- 5:53Speaker 2: one of your children? Has the you know the business
- 5:56Speaker 2: acumen to say I want to do this.
- 5:58Speaker 1: You know, Laurie man is Really great.
- 6:02Speaker 3: I Got a few businessmen in the family You know,
- 6:05Speaker 3: the two youngest ones, Wynton and Lori, are figuring it out.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Lori came to me and said she didn't want to
- 6:13Speaker 3: go to college no more.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And I was like, I'll be damned.
- 6:17Speaker 3: That's a fine time after I done paid these money.
- 6:19Speaker 3: You know, we could have had this discussion for the tuition.
- 6:23Speaker 3: I can't get it back. But she had a plan.
- 6:27Speaker 3: And it's been really amazing watching her grow and develop because.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Of a couple of things, man.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I'm so protective of her because I know what she
- 6:39Speaker 3: up against, you know, and, but she's always wanted to
- 6:45Speaker 3: be a business person. And so, you know, you watch
- 6:49Speaker 3: your kids grow and develop, you watch them learn, they
- 6:52Speaker 3: make mistakes as we all do. But what Lori did was,
- 6:57Speaker 3: Lori has, she just always asked me a question.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Dan, what's it like for this? What's it like for that?
- 7:05Speaker 3: And I could see her wanting more, but this Moon
- 7:09Speaker 3: Ultra investment that we invested in, but her skincare line
- 7:14Speaker 3: was all her, all the vision of her and her mother.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Her and her mother, her mother had this vision before,
- 7:21Speaker 3: but she put it on the back burner and she
- 7:25Speaker 3: dumped it all in with Lori because Lori got smart.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Lori has a team.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Lori has a CEO mentality She understands it now.
- 7:35Speaker 1: She gets it.
- 7:37Speaker 3: You know, she's been through the washer out here. She
- 7:40Speaker 3: know what this social media can be. She learned how
- 7:43Speaker 3: to make it more of a friend of hers than
- 7:45Speaker 3: the enemy. And she just got real smart, man. And
- 7:49Speaker 3: she'll come to me and she'll go, Dad, I'm thinking
- 7:52Speaker 3: about doing this.
- 7:53Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 7:54Speaker 3: I don't always agree, but I don't have to. Because
- 7:58Speaker 3: what's in Lori's imagination, I don't have to see. because
- 8:03Speaker 3: God ain't going to put her imagination.
- 8:06Speaker 1: In my head.
- 8:07Speaker 3: So since I understand that principle, when Lori comes to
- 8:10Speaker 3: me with this, what people think is this wild, crazy idea,
- 8:14Speaker 3: like this girl right here is not going to stop, man.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Her skincare line is good. She's into fashion. She's smart.
- 8:21Speaker 3: And it's just a pleasure watching her. My oldest daughter,
- 8:25Speaker 3: the twins, Brandy is on her own with her beyond
- 8:28Speaker 3: her element that she does speaking engagements. Carly that girl
- 8:34Speaker 3: went out here married her husband who came and asked
- 8:37Speaker 3: me for Her hand in marriage on a golf course.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I had a 7-iron in my hand I want to
- 8:41Speaker 3: crack his head wide open because I'm fine time to
- 8:44Speaker 3: ask me to marry my daughter and I just lost
- 8:46Speaker 3: his round of golf out here and But.
- 8:49Speaker 1: He's a good guy She got it together.
- 8:52Speaker 3: She I has been agent of the year with State
- 8:56Speaker 3: Farm now for two years and a run in this
- 8:58Speaker 3: girl and opened up agencies and stuff.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Oh, she's in the insurance business? Yeah, yeah. That's where
- 9:02Speaker 1: you started.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I started in that. I was never agent of
- 9:06Speaker 3: the year. I was stealing premiums and stuff. I was
- 9:10Speaker 3: at lower level.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Real cool in play. Yeah, I was.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Some things, but I had to make some survival decisions
- 9:15Speaker 3: when I was selling insurance. If you gave me your premium, mm.
- 9:20Speaker 3: But she's doing really, really well. Jason, my other son,
- 9:25Speaker 3: is in the fashion business with his wife. He had
- 9:29Speaker 3: a shoe line out for a while. It kind of
- 9:32Speaker 3: was hard to keep afloat. Now he's back down at
- 9:34Speaker 3: Basel again. He's got his clothing line he's working on
- 9:37Speaker 3: with his wife, who was a model, runway model.
- 9:42Speaker 1: They met her.
- 9:43Speaker 3: That's a long story, but he's giving me more grandkids
- 9:46Speaker 3: than anybody.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And he's doing well. My oldest son, Broderick.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Works on all my TV shows because he just wants
- 9:54Speaker 3: he wants to be in tv uh directing and tv
- 9:59Speaker 3: uh production so he's working as a second stage director
- 10:02Speaker 3: and stuff for all my shows went and does photography
- 10:05Speaker 3: on my shows but went and.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Does videos he's did a lot of work with.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Kanye two chains a lot of artists and stuff went
- 10:12Speaker 3: and travels to Dubai work, and he does work for
- 10:17Speaker 3: the Department of Tourism over there. So all of the kids, man,
- 10:22Speaker 3: are getting it. They're not where they want to be,
- 10:25Speaker 3: but they're getting it. And I told them all. I
- 10:29Speaker 3: think what helped them was I said I was cutting
- 10:30Speaker 3: everybody off, and I didn't. But it felt good saying it,
- 10:37Speaker 3: but I didn't. I told Lori I was going to
- 10:38Speaker 3: cut her off, and she just went, Daddy, stop. That
- 10:42Speaker 3: was all she said was, don't play, don't play. Because
- 10:45Speaker 3: Lori really thinks she's the special one.
- 10:48Speaker 1: She really does.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Lori, I told her I was going to cut her
- 10:50Speaker 3: off because she's making a lot of money right now,
- 10:53Speaker 3: and I was going to cut her off, and she
- 10:54Speaker 3: just started laughing. And then she said, well, and you're
- 10:57Speaker 3: not going to speak to me anymore? I said, yeah,
- 10:59Speaker 3: I'll still talk to you. She said, but not if
- 11:01Speaker 3: you cut me off. So can't cut her off, so.
