- 0:00Speaker 1: On the Bechdcast, the questions asked if movies have women
- 0:04Speaker 1: in them, are all their discussions just boyfriends and husbands
- 0:08Speaker 1: or do they have individualism? It's the patriarchy, Zephyn Beast
- 0:12Speaker 1: start changing with the Bechdelcast.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Do do Do Do Do Do Do Do Do Do
- 0:20Speaker 2: Do Do Do Do Do Do Do Do do do do.
- 0:24Speaker 2: It's our Star Wars prequel episode.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Wow, okay, okay, and that we did it.
- 0:30Speaker 4: We did it. Welcome to beat Boop, Beet Boop.
- 0:34Speaker 5: It is our Star Wars Important Caveat prequels episode. Yes,
- 0:40Speaker 5: if you are listening to this episode, maybe you remember
- 0:43Speaker 5: us talking about our tour that we took last fall
- 0:48Speaker 5: where we covered all three Star Wars prequels in a
- 0:51Speaker 5: live stage show looking absolutely fabulous, I might add, looking
- 0:55Speaker 5: really real, conic good. Or maybe you were lucky enough
- 0:59Speaker 5: to get to attend and hang out with us afterwards.
- 1:03Speaker 5: But we are releasing this to the main feed today
- 1:07Speaker 5: because frankly, we don't release live episodes often, but this
- 1:12Speaker 5: was so much work to get ready for that we
- 1:15Speaker 5: kind of refuse to not have it publicly available, because
- 1:20Speaker 5: my god, was this a lot of prep?
- 1:22Speaker 2: It sure was, so this is the audio from our
- 1:25Speaker 2: Chicago show, and during our live shows, we tend to
- 1:30Speaker 2: do a lot of like multi media things, so we'll
- 1:34Speaker 2: do slide shows, we'll do videos, and so some of
- 1:37Speaker 2: those things are too visually oriented to include in just
- 1:42Speaker 2: an audio podcast. So there are a few things that
- 1:45Speaker 2: we cut from this episode that just don't translate to
- 1:49Speaker 2: the audio medium, such as a video at the end
- 1:53Speaker 2: of the episode where we do a super cut of
- 1:56Speaker 2: all the times women interact in the entire Star Wars
- 1:59Speaker 2: Prequels trilogy. And there's also videos that we screened during
- 2:04Speaker 2: the live show that you will hear the audio four
- 2:08Speaker 2: in the episode, which are the three recap videos that
- 2:13Speaker 2: I edited. They're each about five minutes long. The point is,
- 2:17Speaker 2: if you want to watch these, we have put them
- 2:22Speaker 2: on the Bechdel Cast YouTube channel, which we basically don't
- 2:26Speaker 2: use for anything except for things like this, So the
- 2:31Speaker 2: link for that is on our link tree. So if
- 2:32Speaker 2: you want to watch any of those videos as sort
- 2:35Speaker 2: of like a supplementary material for this episode, they live
- 2:40Speaker 2: on our YouTube. But most of the episode is intact,
- 2:45Speaker 2: So most of what we did in the live show
- 2:48Speaker 2: is here in this audio episode, and we had a
- 2:54Speaker 2: blast doing this tour. So for everyone who came out,
- 2:58Speaker 2: thank you so much, and.
- 2:59Speaker 5: To all of the venues that hosted us in all
- 3:02Speaker 5: four cities, we are very grateful and just had a
- 3:06Speaker 5: great experience. And if we did not make it to
- 3:09Speaker 5: your town, if you don't live in these very specific
- 3:11Speaker 5: for Midwestern towns, for this tour, we have.
- 3:15Speaker 4: We have designs. We have designs.
- 3:17Speaker 5: In the coming year, it's our ten year anniversary, so
- 3:21Speaker 5: we intend to hit the road again.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Stay tuned, Stay tuned, and in the meantime, enjoy this
- 3:28Speaker 2: live show episode of the Star Wars prequels.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Hi, Welcome to the Bechtel Cast. Guys, how are you hello?
- 3:43Speaker 3: We're so excited to be here.
- 3:44Speaker 2: We finally came to Chicago. Sorry, it took us so
- 3:47Speaker 2: many years.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Yes, but thank you for being persistent and aggressive.
- 3:54Speaker 3: We're so, so so excited to be here.
- 3:57Speaker 5: It's been a long time coming. We just came from
- 3:59Speaker 5: Indianapoli is now we're here. We've got we've got well,
- 4:03Speaker 5: let's let's sort of introduce Yeah, got here obviously. Okay,
- 4:07Speaker 5: let's let's just like do a litmus test for what
- 4:11Speaker 5: a pack of fucking doors you are?
- 4:14Speaker 3: Do we know who this little King is here, Bob Frank,
- 4:21Speaker 3: thank you. Yes that was a call on response. I
- 4:23Speaker 3: guess I wasn't clear. This is this is my favorite
- 4:26Speaker 3: Star Wars character.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Got wrong?
- 4:30Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, I am right.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Unfortunately, I think twelve of these toys were ever sold.
- 4:35Speaker 5: But his whole thing is he's a little guy. Yeah,
- 4:39Speaker 5: and he goes, hey, I.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Love who do you have there, Caitlin, Well, I mean,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and you're gonna demonstrate this better than me. But this
- 4:51Speaker 2: so this is a padme Amidala ever heard of her?
- 4:56Speaker 2: This belongs to Jamie as well. I don't own any dolls,
- 5:00Speaker 2: no offense.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Okay, awesome, who are you anyone I've ever dated?
- 5:07Speaker 3: Jesus? Okay, let me. I got this baby on eBay
- 5:13Speaker 3: for one dollar. Not wanted.
- 5:17Speaker 5: But I misunderstood the premise of the doll because it
- 5:22Speaker 5: looks like you get two dolls, but it turns out
- 5:25Speaker 5: you get one doll with an extra head.
- 5:34Speaker 3: So unpleasant.
- 5:35Speaker 5: I wonder why he was trying to get rid of it.
- 5:41Speaker 5: It's so scary. It's not a good thing to just
- 5:44Speaker 5: like have in your luggage. It feels like you're chased. Anyways, Okay,
- 5:48Speaker 5: welcome to the Bechtel Cast.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. We're here to talk about
- 5:54Speaker 2: the Star Wars prequels.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Okay, but before we get there, we're cure, is there
- 6:00Speaker 5: anyone here? I mean, we'll give it up if you're
- 6:02Speaker 5: a regular listener of the show. Okay, that's that's just
- 6:09Speaker 5: free applause. But give it up if you were dragged
- 6:12Speaker 5: here by a loved one.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Interesting. Okay, well, look in.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Because we have a lot to get through tonight. This
- 6:28Speaker 5: is an important historical summit in which in which we
- 6:35Speaker 5: bravely discussed these movies no one has ever talked about before,
- 6:40Speaker 5: and certainly not to death.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Certainly not who has who has done their homework and
- 6:47Speaker 2: watched the movies?
- 6:50Speaker 6: Yes, okay, because.
- 6:52Speaker 3: What a weird cheer, polarized.
- 6:57Speaker 5: I feel like some of you were kind of booing
- 6:59Speaker 5: them but also confirming that you saw them.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Who has never seen the Star Wars prequels?
- 7:07Speaker 1: Oh wow?
- 7:08Speaker 3: Okay, sweet summer children, there I.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Was you once.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Well, we're going to take you through all three movies,
- 7:19Speaker 5: and we're gonna sort of decide once and for all
- 7:23Speaker 5: if they're any good. And actually we kind of like
- 7:27Speaker 5: at our first show yesterday, we kind of were like
- 7:28Speaker 5: getting into it.
- 7:29Speaker 3: We feel differently, we feel differently you.
- 7:33Speaker 2: And what I mean, yes, yes, yes, So well, Jamie,
- 7:36Speaker 2: what's your relationship with Star Wars, the prequels, et cetera.
- 7:40Speaker 3: I don't care about them. I don't care about them.
- 7:45Speaker 3: I was.
- 7:46Speaker 5: I grew up a loser, but not this kind of loser.
- 7:51Speaker 5: I guess the easiest way to put it. This was
- 7:54Speaker 5: not my culture. I did not grow I didn't. I
- 7:57Speaker 5: don't think I saw any of the original movies from
- 7:59Speaker 5: the s and eighties until I was like, well into college.
- 8:03Speaker 5: I did see, though, I mean, I think I'm sure
- 8:05Speaker 5: this is the case for a lot of people here,
- 8:06Speaker 5: Like the prequels were what I associated with Star.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Wars primarily, and I was like, not for me if
- 8:14Speaker 3: I didn't. I had never seen Phantom.
- 8:16Speaker 5: Menace, but I do remember when I saw The Clone
- 8:21Speaker 5: Wars at a drive in with my family when I
- 8:24Speaker 5: was little.
- 8:24Speaker 3: It was like one of the first movies I remember.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Watching as a kid and being like, Wow, I don't
- 8:29Speaker 5: like this, which.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Is such a weird feeling.
- 8:33Speaker 5: As a kid, it would not occur to you to
- 8:35Speaker 5: not like anything, right it was, but yeah, I was like, wow,
- 8:39Speaker 5: this is a bummer. But I kind of came around
- 8:42Speaker 5: for episode three, because I was like in middle school
- 8:46Speaker 5: by that point, and they were doing this really if
- 8:48Speaker 5: you remember, like a really kind of aggressive, like hot
- 8:51Speaker 5: topic ification.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Of Darth Vader.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Like they were like, he's got the broody haircut, like, dude,
- 8:59Speaker 5: girls a fuck Darth Vader to me, and I was
- 9:04Speaker 5: a horny twelve.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Year old, I was like, yeah, sure, I guess I
- 9:06Speaker 3: want to fuck Darth Vader.
- 9:09Speaker 5: So I like had a little Darth Vader purse, my
- 9:12Speaker 5: little fascism purse that I had, and I was like, yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 5: I want to fuck this mean fascist like that was
- 9:20Speaker 5: what they were, and they still kind of do that
- 9:22Speaker 5: to this day over a hot topic.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So yeah, I don't know.
- 9:27Speaker 5: They grew on me, I will say, Like, going back
- 9:30Speaker 5: to watch them to prepare for this, I got way
- 9:32Speaker 5: more into the particulars of the Star Wars universe than
- 9:36Speaker 5: I ever thought I would need or want to. Yeah,
- 9:40Speaker 5: and now I have become the fucking dork I once feared.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Well, fear leads to anger, Anger leads to hate, Hate
- 9:50Speaker 2: leads to suffering.
- 9:51Speaker 5: That's and that is what it feels like, Terry.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Now, I actually I am on team Prequels. Good team
- 9:59Speaker 3: pre uh Shakespearean whoa Team my favorite thing in the world.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Ultimately, this is a movie about men being bitches and yeah.
- 10:12Speaker 3: And I and I celebrate that.
- 10:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Caitlin, Caitlin, what's the what's your history with the prequels?
- 10:22Speaker 3: I don't like having a Mary.
- 10:23Speaker 2: It's so creepy. It's gonna get me. I grew up
- 10:29Speaker 2: with the original trilogy. I have been watching them ever
- 10:32Speaker 2: since I can remember. Return of the Jedi is my
- 10:36Speaker 2: favorite because I love ewoks. Okay, I was like, oh,
- 10:40Speaker 2: Empire Strikes Bag is the best one. Shut up, it
- 10:42Speaker 2: doesn't have ewoks. And I was thirteen when Phantom Menace
- 10:49Speaker 2: came out. I probably didn't see it until I was
- 10:51Speaker 2: maybe fourteen or what. I don't know. I don't think
- 10:53Speaker 2: I saw in theaters because I was like, what is this?
- 10:56Speaker 2: They look bad, they look like shit, what's all this? CG.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I'm my Star Wars. I don't want to I don't
- 11:00Speaker 2: need it. I got around to seeing it. I was
- 11:02Speaker 2: a teenager, which meant I had like just enough taste
- 11:06Speaker 2: to be like, well, that fucking sucked. And I think
- 11:12Speaker 2: I saw the other two in theaters. But I was
- 11:14Speaker 2: a hater. I was contributing to the hate and the backlash,
- 11:19Speaker 2: and then I didn't see them for I don't know,
- 11:22Speaker 2: fifteen years.
- 11:23Speaker 5: I'm curious, is and was anyone here like a part
- 11:27Speaker 5: of the original prequels hate Squad?
- 11:32Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, you've made yourself.
- 11:33Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 11:35Speaker 3: You guys are pretty harsh.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:38Speaker 3: No, they're well.
- 11:40Speaker 2: And then I watched them again to prep for this tour,
- 11:42Speaker 2: and I still think they suck.
- 11:43Speaker 3: They're bad. But it was like there was like a
- 11:48Speaker 3: like a blood feud over this.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Like weird old I mean not to defend George Lucas,
- 11:53Speaker 5: but he's a weird old man. And there was a
- 11:57Speaker 5: million Internet users being like, we have to kill we
- 12:01Speaker 5: have to kill this weird old man. And then he
- 12:04Speaker 5: spighted you all by somehow making an even worse trilogy
- 12:10Speaker 5: later on.
- 12:10Speaker 3: But if you hang into le end Babu Frick gets
- 12:12Speaker 3: there so.
- 12:14Speaker 5: That I remember, we saw episode nine together, and I
- 12:17Speaker 5: don't think I had like I had maybe seen the
- 12:20Speaker 5: first one. I hadn't seen the last Jedi. I was like,
- 12:22Speaker 5: let's see, let's vibe. Everyone was booing, everyone was upset,
- 12:25Speaker 5: and I left. I was just like, who is that
- 12:28Speaker 5: little guy?
- 12:33Speaker 3: Let me become his only fan.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Amazing. Yeah, so we have a nice variety of opinion.
- 12:43Speaker 5: Yes, there is no wrong opinion about these movies except
- 12:46Speaker 5: whatever one you share with us at the merch table later.
- 12:50Speaker 5: But in order to we got a lot of ground
- 12:53Speaker 5: to cover. Okay, we're gonna be talking about all three movies,
- 12:57Speaker 5: and so normally this is where we would have Caitlyn's
- 12:59Speaker 5: face this.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Recap, and we do have it, but it's a.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Little it's a little different. So I was like, if
- 13:05Speaker 2: I recap all three movies, it'll take the entire show.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So instead, I really pared down the stories of these
- 13:13Speaker 2: movies and I did a little video edit recap. Uh,
- 13:19Speaker 2: so we're gonna we're just gonna kind of go episode
- 13:21Speaker 2: by episodes. So we're just gonna start with episode one,
- 13:24Speaker 2: never heard of it, and uh, we're gonna watch the
- 13:27Speaker 2: recap q Jar Jar Okay. So the backstory is this evil,
- 13:38Speaker 2: greedy entity in the galaxy called the Trade Federation is
- 13:42Speaker 2: enforcing an embargo against the planet of Naboo. So two
- 13:46Speaker 2: Jedi knights, Qui Gungjin and Obi Wan Kenobi are sent
- 13:50Speaker 2: to try to convince the Trade Federation to stop the blockade.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Lord Sidius, who is definitely not Palpatine.
- 14:00Speaker 3: The Trade Federation.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Leaders to kill the Jedi kill but Qui Gon and
- 14:04Speaker 2: Obi Wan fight off their attackers and escape to Naboo,
- 14:08Speaker 2: where they run into jar Jar banks. Meanwhile, Queen Amidala
- 14:15Speaker 2: is trying to stave off an attack by the Trade Federation,
- 14:19Speaker 2: but the Federation invades Naboo and captures the Queen and
- 14:23Speaker 2: her council, but Qui Gon, Obi Wan, and jar Jar
- 14:26Speaker 2: show up to rescue them and convince them to accompany
- 14:29Speaker 2: the Jedi to the planet of Coroissant. They board a
- 14:33Speaker 2: ship are two detwo is there and they head toward Coroissant,
- 14:38Speaker 2: but their ship is attacked and damaged, so they have
- 14:41Speaker 2: to land on the nearby planet of Tatuine. Qui Gon,
- 14:45Speaker 2: Jarjar and the Queen's handmaiden, who is definitely not also
- 14:49Speaker 2: actually the Queen, laid into a village to try to
- 14:53Speaker 2: get the parts they need to repair their ship. There
- 14:56Speaker 2: they meet Anakin skywalker, who is enslaved by this guy Watto,
- 15:03Speaker 2: who will agree to give Qui Gon the ship parts
- 15:06Speaker 2: he needs if Anakin wins an upcoming pod race and
- 15:11Speaker 2: hands over the prize money to Watto. But first this
- 15:15Speaker 2: small child hits on this adult wom.
- 15:20Speaker 1: An angel.
- 15:21Speaker 5: They're the most beautiful creatures like you.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Also, these two meet and fall in love, you know
- 15:28Speaker 2: Wordsidius sends his apprentice Darth Maul to track down Queen
- 15:32Speaker 2: Amidala to kill her or make her sign a treaty.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I don't really know. Then there's about forty minutes of
- 15:42Speaker 2: pod racing shit as his treedom, Qui Gon wants to
- 15:48Speaker 2: take Anakin with them, feeling the force is strong with him.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Anakin has a shitload of Midi Chlorians. So Anakin says
- 15:59Speaker 2: goodbye to his mother, Shmi Skywalker and joins Qui Gon
- 16:03Speaker 2: in Obi Wan. Then Qui Gon, Anakin and friends arrive
- 16:09Speaker 2: on Coruscant, where they're greeted by Senator Palpatine, who is
- 16:13Speaker 2: using Queen Amidala to weasel his way into being elected
- 16:17Speaker 2: as the new Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Senate. Meanwhile,
- 16:22Speaker 2: Qui Gon tells the Jedi Council Yoda and Mace Windu
- 16:26Speaker 2: and this guy and as guys there. But Queen wants
- 16:30Speaker 2: to train Anakin to become a Jedi, but the council
- 16:34Speaker 2: is like, oh, he's too old, and he freaks us out,
- 16:37Speaker 2: and we felt like that he feels emotions, so everyone
- 16:41Speaker 2: returns to Naboo. We learn that Padme is Queen amidala Oo.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Sir, I'm Queen amidala.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Jar Jar Binks and the other Gungans battle the Trade
- 16:54Speaker 2: Federation and their droids who are attacking Naboo. Anakin ends
- 16:59Speaker 2: up in space and he blows up the big Trade
- 17:01Speaker 2: federationship all by himself because he's so good at his
- 17:05Speaker 2: Midi Chlorians or whatever, and it allows the Gungans to
- 17:09Speaker 2: win the battle on Naboo. Meanwhile, Qui Gon and Obi
- 17:13Speaker 2: Wan fight Darth Maul, but oh geez, Darth Vall kills
- 17:18Speaker 2: Qui Gon, so obi Wan chops Darth Maul in half
- 17:22Speaker 2: about it, and then obi Wan promises to train Anakin
- 17:26Speaker 2: to become a Jedi is the chosen one, which Yoda
- 17:30Speaker 2: and mace Windu are not happy about because they still
- 17:33Speaker 2: think Anakin is a little freak. They also mention that
- 17:37Speaker 2: there are always two Siths at a time, and now
- 17:41Speaker 2: that one is gone, another one will take his place.
- 17:46Speaker 3: But who will it be? You ever get this recas
- 17:56Speaker 3: truly so much uh weird Jedi.
- 18:01Speaker 5: White supremacy in the first one. Okay, where do we start.
- 18:06Speaker 5: I mean, we already talked about how these movies were
- 18:08Speaker 5: originally received. Everyone like probably one of the most anticipated
- 18:12Speaker 5: movies ever.
- 18:13Speaker 3: And then generally everyone fucking hated it.
- 18:17Speaker 8: Then if you were an adult, yeah, And then my
- 18:22Speaker 8: favorite sort of back and forth that I've noticed is
- 18:24Speaker 8: that whenever someone's like this movie fucking sucks, George Lucas
- 18:28Speaker 8: is like, well it's for children, and it's like, well,
- 18:30Speaker 8: it's ninety percent senic meetings.
- 18:33Speaker 3: So I don't believe you mean that. I think you
- 18:39Speaker 3: thought it was good.
- 18:41Speaker 5: But there's a lot to talk about in this first
- 18:43Speaker 5: one that like kind of disappears in the second and
- 18:46Speaker 5: third movies because it was so poorly received, Like the
- 18:50Speaker 5: big one.
- 18:51Speaker 3: One of the big ones is the Midichlorians thing.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Which is basically just like space eugenics.
- 18:58Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, like you have the most Jedi blood. It
- 19:02Speaker 5: feels weird, it feels uh and and people didn't like it,
- 19:07Speaker 5: and so I don't think it ever comes up again.
- 19:09Speaker 3: They're just they're like, he has the most Next.
- 19:15Speaker 5: I think the other biggest remembered like hated aspect of
- 19:20Speaker 5: episode one is tragically and incorrectly charged ar Binks.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Yes, soever, we are a pro Jargear podcast. He did
- 19:33Speaker 2: nothing wrong.
- 19:34Speaker 5: I really appreciate how like jar Jar Binks does has
- 19:37Speaker 5: sort of had like the scorned woman of the nineties
- 19:40Speaker 5: things where people were like, we were so hard on him,
- 19:44Speaker 5: whatever you do. Meanwhile, all he was trying to do
- 19:48Speaker 5: was appoints a dictator.
- 19:53Speaker 2: But he didn't do it on purpose.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Oh he's just a dufus.
- 19:58Speaker 5: But there is a lot to talk about about with
- 20:00Speaker 5: jar Jar and like how that character has been interpreted
- 20:04Speaker 5: and sort of reclaimed or not reclaimed over the years,
- 20:06Speaker 5: and it tends to like split along these two.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Stories that are like different but both important.
- 20:13Speaker 5: The first is that there has been a lot of
- 20:18Speaker 5: talk and analysis, rightfully so, of how jar Jar's character
- 20:22Speaker 5: plays into both really harmful racial stereotypes specifically around black
- 20:28Speaker 5: Americans or just black people in general, and then as
- 20:32Speaker 5: well as really colonial stereotypes and kind of like the
- 20:35Speaker 5: noble savage he you know, the first two guys he meets, he's.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Like, oh, I'm your servant forever now, you know.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Yeah. And the actor who played him amed best He
- 20:49Speaker 2: He and George Lucas both were very defensive of this
- 20:54Speaker 2: character at the time. They're like, no, there's no racism here,
- 20:57Speaker 2: What are you talking.
- 20:58Speaker 3: About, George Lucas.
- 21:00Speaker 5: I've watched all the in my over preparing because I'm
- 21:03Speaker 5: obsessed with homework, I watched all the behind the scene
- 21:06Speaker 5: footage of all the movies, and in the first uh like,
- 21:10Speaker 5: so much of the first BTS footage is George Lucas
- 21:15Speaker 5: like looking to camera and being like, jar j Arr
- 21:17Speaker 5: is gonna change everything.
- 21:20Speaker 2: He's not. It wasn't wrong, he could not.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Be, could not be reading their room worse. And then
- 21:25Speaker 3: it's just like a comment.
- 21:26Speaker 5: Yeah, like conversations with him and Ahmed Best where Ahmed's
- 21:29Speaker 5: like and this is where jar Jar really sort of
- 21:31Speaker 5: starts to take his own narrative and George is like, yes,
- 21:34Speaker 5: jar Jar is the best character I've ever written Han
- 21:38Speaker 5: solo like, But unfortunately uh yeah, I mean both the
- 21:45Speaker 5: actor and the writer has uh have have still to
- 21:49Speaker 5: this day remained jar Jar defenders in spite of there
- 21:53Speaker 5: I mean, there's been a lot of writing and criticism
- 21:56Speaker 5: of the stereotypes present in the character, but the proud
- 22:00Speaker 5: like is that it's not. I mean, George Lucas did
- 22:04Speaker 5: get blowback for Jargear, but the kind of like abuse
- 22:08Speaker 5: that Ahmed Best had to deal with for years. Yeah,
- 22:13Speaker 5: like it changed the shape of his life. There was
- 22:15Speaker 5: a podcast a couple of years ago called The Redemption
- 22:18Speaker 5: of jar Jar binks.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Very much something I would listen to.
- 22:23Speaker 5: Yeah, but it's sort of from Ahmed Best perspective of
- 22:27Speaker 5: like how painful that was, how he was like sent
- 22:31Speaker 5: death threats, how he you know, it really hurt his
- 22:34Speaker 5: mental healthy at suicidal ideation, Like.
- 22:36Speaker 3: All of this really really awful stuff.
- 22:39Speaker 5: Because not only was the fans not liking the character
- 22:43Speaker 5: being pushed all on him, the rightful criticism of the
- 22:47Speaker 5: racial stereotypes was being you know, put on Ahmed Best as.
- 22:50Speaker 3: If he had written the character himself.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Yeah, and so he sort of ended up taking all
- 22:55Speaker 5: of this slack for it, and it took, you know,
- 22:58Speaker 5: years to work through it.
- 22:59Speaker 3: And it's still I mean, like he and George Lucas
- 23:02Speaker 3: are still friends.
- 23:03Speaker 5: I guess he's in The Mandalorian he like plays a character.
- 23:06Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean I feel like the jar Jar
- 23:09Speaker 5: saga sort of encapsulates how poorly, poorly conceived and poorly
- 23:15Speaker 5: received Episode one was.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Definitely in addition to that character, there's a lot of
- 23:21Speaker 2: There's been a lot of other criticism about the oh God,
- 23:25Speaker 2: who are these people? The Nermuoidian characters right, basically like
- 23:33Speaker 2: the leaders of the trade Federation that we see. They
- 23:37Speaker 2: have been criticized for being racist caricatures of East Asian people.
- 23:43Speaker 2: The newt gun Ray guy, that's a character. You know him, right.
- 23:50Speaker 2: He is played by a white man named Silas Carson
- 23:54Speaker 2: from England, and so he's not doing his English accent certainly.
- 24:00Speaker 3: And nor is the actor playing Watto.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Nope. So that is a character that has been criticized
- 24:09Speaker 2: for being playing into anti Semitic and anti Arab stereotypes.
- 24:14Speaker 2: And that is voiced by a Welsh guy named Andy So.
- 24:23Speaker 5: And we prefer Wata when played by Griffin Newman personally. Yes,
- 24:29Speaker 5: so yeah, there are I mean, and these are these
- 24:31Speaker 5: persist throughout the movies, but there there's a weird amount
- 24:35Speaker 5: concentrated in the first movie, right that is sort of
- 24:39Speaker 5: like dialed back on because I guess apparently like jar
- 24:41Speaker 5: Jar was originally supposed to be a huge character in
- 24:44Speaker 5: all three movies and then everyone hated jar Jar and
- 24:49Speaker 5: they were like, never mind, We're just gonna have him
- 24:51Speaker 5: appoint a dictator and then disappear and then go.
- 24:54Speaker 2: To Padme's funeral spoilers.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Oh my god, it's so fun every watch I went.
- 25:00Speaker 5: I saw the re release of episode three, and it's
- 25:03Speaker 5: so funny when you're at this like really intense like
- 25:07Speaker 5: moment at the end of the saga and it just
- 25:09Speaker 5: cuts to jar Jar crying, so fuck.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Invited you there?
- 25:15Speaker 5: He's I love Jarger and Padme's friendship. It's complicated. It's
- 25:20Speaker 5: a complicated friendship.
- 25:22Speaker 3: People won't understand.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I would also say for the human characters who are
- 25:27Speaker 2: predominantly white throughout all of the movies, there are there's
- 25:31Speaker 2: only a very small handful of like main characters who
- 25:36Speaker 2: we would able to be able to like maybe identify
- 25:39Speaker 2: their name and recognize them when we see them a
- 25:42Speaker 2: second time kind of thing. And it's pretty much just
- 25:45Speaker 2: Mace Windu played by Samuel L. Jackson, of course, And
- 25:48Speaker 2: you're like, George Lucas, how could you direct sam Jackson
- 25:52Speaker 2: to do such a bad performance? Like what are you doing?
- 25:56Speaker 5: Sir?
- 25:56Speaker 2: But he does suck in this movie.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Uh.
- 26:00Speaker 5: And then, as you pointed out in the recap, I
- 26:04Speaker 5: don't understand why did he Why did he have to
- 26:08Speaker 5: be eight and her be like sixteen?
- 26:11Speaker 1: Why?
- 26:12Speaker 3: What was the reason we he's a starver. He's a
- 26:17Speaker 3: weird guy. That's weird.
- 26:19Speaker 2: I was thinking about the dude, and I was like, well,
- 26:22Speaker 2: maybe it's because like they find the young lings when
- 26:26Speaker 2: they're small children and then train them up to be Jedi.
- 26:29Speaker 3: But why couldn't she be that young then?
- 26:31Speaker 5: Like what was the reason that she had to be
- 26:34Speaker 5: twice his size?
- 26:38Speaker 2: Also because like Lule Skywalker trains to be a Jedi
- 26:42Speaker 2: and he's like whatever. Eighteen nineteen.
- 26:45Speaker 5: I do like the scene where they bring the kid
- 26:49Speaker 5: Anakin into the Jedi Council and they're like old, nasty,
- 26:54Speaker 5: fucked up looking crusty like, and it's like a kid.
- 27:01Speaker 2: And then they're like, oh, you missed your mummy, you bitch.
- 27:06Speaker 3: We'll get over it. You're in the CIA now. It's
- 27:12Speaker 3: so fucked up.
- 27:15Speaker 5: But my favorite, my favorite reaction too, because even though
- 27:18Speaker 5: people were weirded out by this like age gap, it
- 27:21Speaker 5: was not even in like the top ten issues people
- 27:23Speaker 5: had at the time, but someone who did, Okay, this
- 27:28Speaker 5: is my favorite quote about this dynamic is what George
- 27:32Speaker 5: Lucas's ex wife had.
- 27:34Speaker 3: To say, which is so fune.
- 27:38Speaker 5: Okay, so Marshall Lucas, yeah, she she is his ex
- 27:42Speaker 5: wife but also crucially she edited the first Star Wars movie.
- 27:47Speaker 3: She worked on the original trilogy. Sure, yeah, woman in
- 27:53Speaker 3: the job there in the seventies. It happened, but they it.
- 28:00Speaker 5: Up sometime between the original trilogy and the prequels, and
- 28:03Speaker 5: she of course.
- 28:04Speaker 9: Went to see what that old dusty bitch George was
- 28:08Speaker 9: up to when the first one came out, and she
- 28:12Speaker 9: said the following, Okay, so this is from an article
- 28:17Speaker 9: said George Lucas's ex wife cried tears of sadness at
- 28:24Speaker 9: Phantom Menace.
- 28:26Speaker 3: She says, George is in his heart and soul a
- 28:28Speaker 3: good guy.
- 28:30Speaker 5: I wish already, like doesn't your body just sees you
- 28:39Speaker 5: feel like you're a Thanksgiving I wish you would have
- 28:43Speaker 5: directed other kinds of movies. But when I went to
- 28:50Speaker 5: see episode one, I remember going out to the parking lot,
- 28:54Speaker 5: sitting in my car and crying. I cried because I
- 28:59Speaker 5: didn't think it was very good. And I thought he
- 29:04Speaker 5: had such a rich vein to mine, a rich palette
- 29:07Speaker 5: to tell stories with. He had all those characters, and
- 29:09Speaker 5: I thought it was weird that the story was about
- 29:12Speaker 5: this little boy who looked like he was about six,
- 29:15Speaker 5: But then later on he's supposed to get with this
- 29:17Speaker 5: princess who looked like she.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Was twenty end of quote. I good for her, Yeah,
- 29:25Speaker 3: good for her.
- 29:26Speaker 5: I wish I could roast my exes on the global
- 29:29Speaker 5: stage like that.
- 29:31Speaker 3: That's thrilling, and she's right, she's right to say it.
- 29:34Speaker 2: So Anakin is nine canonically in the first movie, Padme
- 29:39Speaker 2: is I think fourteen. Then it's then it's although Natalie
- 29:45Speaker 2: Portman was sixteen or seventeen when these movies were being filmed,
- 29:49Speaker 2: so she's even older.
- 29:51Speaker 3: And it's like, just it is very.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Much a bizarre choice that taints a whole thing.
- 29:59Speaker 5: Choice anything else in episode one you wanted to touch on.
- 30:04Speaker 2: I mean, I just want to mention Natalie Portman and
- 30:10Speaker 2: her ties to Israel because she was born there, she
- 30:16Speaker 2: has dual citizenship between there and the US. She was
- 30:18Speaker 2: raised in the US. She is like, very like the
- 30:24Speaker 2: liberal Zionism thing, which is you're still just a Zionist.
- 30:28Speaker 2: She has been critical of Israel in the past, but
- 30:30Speaker 2: still like defends its right to exist. And so she's
- 30:35Speaker 2: a Zionist, and we say, fuck her, fuck all Zionists.
- 30:39Speaker 5: So best of luck with that mental illness she has. Yeah,
- 30:45Speaker 5: I think the last thing other than fucking mally Portman Zionism.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Yeah, like s girls girl scroll.
- 30:53Speaker 7: Uh.
- 30:53Speaker 5: So I think that one character we really didn't get
- 30:57Speaker 5: to talk about who a lot of people remember very
- 31:02Speaker 5: fondly from the first episode.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Yes, is Darth Maul so true?
- 31:06Speaker 5: Yeah, Darth maum certified hoty. I think we can all agree.
- 31:11Speaker 2: I think we might even have some like photographic evidence.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Yes, what do we think?
- 31:19Speaker 3: Do we think that the pattern continues?
- 31:25Speaker 5: I will say I was looking for this and I
- 31:27Speaker 5: this was like the by far the tamest.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Image I found.
- 31:32Speaker 5: But I just I found it so inspiring Kitalen that
- 31:35Speaker 5: it made me want to write a short story. Oh,
- 31:38Speaker 5: inspired by Darth Maul being hot?
- 31:40Speaker 3: Would you mind if I if I read it? Please,
- 31:43Speaker 3: I insist, Please hold my bab ou friend.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 31:49Speaker 3: Also, I bought this outfit and it's like for porn.
- 31:52Speaker 2: I think.
- 31:54Speaker 5: I just put on a second shirt because I was like, oh,
- 31:56Speaker 5: this is a padme outfit designed.
- 31:58Speaker 3: For your nipples to be showing.
- 31:59Speaker 5: Okay, Okay, this is some erotic fanfeiction I wrote about
- 32:04Speaker 5: Darth Maul that takes place immediately after he.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Is cut in half a shop. If I may.
- 32:16Speaker 5: Darth Maul was having a terrible day. One moment, he
- 32:21Speaker 5: was fighting a twink.
- 32:22Speaker 3: And a twunk on the edge of a precarious tower. God,
- 32:27Speaker 3: how many times has he brought up installing a railing?
- 32:30Speaker 3: How many times?
- 32:31Speaker 5: And the next moment he was at the bottom of
- 32:34Speaker 5: the pit and he had a tummy ache. Darth Maul
- 32:38Speaker 5: pounded his fist on the marble floor before anyone.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Got to know me. It was such a cool villina.
- 32:47Speaker 3: He looked down at his body to assess the damage.
- 32:50Speaker 3: How bad could it? Oh?
- 32:53Speaker 5: Oh, my god? Darth Maul was in fact cut in half.
- 32:59Speaker 5: His lower quadrant lay in a heap beside him, his
- 33:02Speaker 5: toes still twitching. He tried to get a better look
- 33:04Speaker 5: at his top half and saw his little mall spine
- 33:07Speaker 5: poking out like a chicken drumstick. This is the worst
- 33:11Speaker 5: day ever. Mal hauled himself up using his arms. Looks
- 33:17Speaker 5: like all those days lifting with Darth Fuckius getting off
- 33:22Speaker 5: and took stock of the situation.
- 33:25Speaker 3: He hadn't really meant to kill Liam Neeson, he was
- 33:28Speaker 3: such a big fan of his.
- 33:31Speaker 5: No one would believe that, though, and Mal felt himself
- 33:33Speaker 5: once again consumed by his imposter syndrome. Huh I can't
- 33:39Speaker 5: do anything right, he said, frowning like the emoticon. But
- 33:45Speaker 5: just then the echo of a familiar voice came from
- 33:48Speaker 5: above where he'd just fallen from.
- 33:51Speaker 3: It was obi Wan's voice.
- 33:53Speaker 5: I'm so sorry, Liam Neeson, obi Wan whined from above,
- 33:58Speaker 5: not only because you died, but because the man who
- 34:00Speaker 5: killed you.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Well. Mal couldn't help, but hope. Could it be true?
- 34:05Speaker 3: I have a huge crush on him?
- 34:10Speaker 5: Obi Wan ran away, leaving Liam Neeson's corpse to rot.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Mal shook his head.
- 34:17Speaker 2: He knew it.
- 34:18Speaker 5: He'd been having casual hookups all over the galaxy for years,
- 34:22Speaker 5: but that one night with obi.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Wan last spring that meant something to him.
- 34:27Speaker 5: He knew obi Wan felt the duel, but for nine
- 34:32Speaker 5: months he'd pined. He pulled out his phone and read
- 34:35Speaker 5: through he and obi Wan's last text, screw you, obi
- 34:40Speaker 5: Wan had written a week ago, I have a Tommy ache.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Maul replied, okay, obi Wan replied, Mal reacted.
- 34:48Speaker 5: With Aminion's gift. Obi Wan had gone silent. Then yesterday morning,
- 34:53Speaker 5: Mal tried again. Please don't be mad, he texted, are
- 34:56Speaker 5: you seriously going to fight us?
- 34:58Speaker 3: Obi asked.
- 35:00Speaker 5: Paul had written his whole text out, but never had
- 35:02Speaker 5: the courage to send it.
- 35:03Speaker 3: The unread text said, no, I have feelings for you.
- 35:08Speaker 5: I debated telling you for a while, but I was
- 35:10Speaker 5: scared and honestly thought it might ruin our friendship.
- 35:13Speaker 3: But I have to be honest. Still, Mall couldn't help.
- 35:17Speaker 5: But remember how obi Wan looked at him, his thick
- 35:19Speaker 5: arms with the however you would describe the pattern, his
- 35:27Speaker 5: tight little horns.
- 35:31Speaker 3: Obi Wan would have been so lucky.
- 35:34Speaker 5: It didn't matter that Mal was in two pieces and
- 35:37Speaker 5: somehow survived. For the purposes of the porn I'm writing.
- 35:41Speaker 3: He looked fucking good.
- 35:44Speaker 5: Beside him, Mal's bottom half twitched. He'd worry about getting
- 35:48Speaker 5: his two hands surgically reattached later. At least his legs
- 35:52Speaker 5: were still.
- 35:53Speaker 3: Oh my god, it was not Mal's leg that had tweeted.
- 36:00Speaker 3: It was.
- 36:01Speaker 5: He dragged his top half over to be sure, rearranging
- 36:04Speaker 5: the robes. It was Mal's turgid cock. He'd be It's
- 36:13Speaker 5: always good to have the chance to use the word turgid.
- 36:18Speaker 5: He'd be lying if he said he hadn't thought about
- 36:20Speaker 5: it before. If the scyth were so powerful, why couldn't
- 36:23Speaker 5: they suck themselves off?
- 36:27Speaker 3: Wouldn't that be the first thing you'd do with that
- 36:30Speaker 3: kind of power.
- 36:32Speaker 5: But no, Darth Sidius had said the scyth could never
- 36:35Speaker 5: suck themselves off.
- 36:36Speaker 3: It was a threat to productivity. Not today.
- 36:42Speaker 5: Ma looked at his rock hard peepee, which kind of
- 36:46Speaker 5: corkscrewed like a ducks.
- 36:50Speaker 3: He looked upon his menacing pukes.
- 36:55Speaker 5: Sure things hadn't worked out with obi Wan, but look
- 36:57Speaker 5: at what obi Wan was missing out on. Maul's leg
- 37:01Speaker 5: beckoned his top half over and for a moment he
- 37:04Speaker 5: wondered about the ethics of consent, then remembered.
- 37:09Speaker 3: And chuckled to himself. He did it. He sucked off
- 37:14Speaker 3: his bottom half, and he felt both of his hams
- 37:18Speaker 3: surge with pleasure.
- 37:20Speaker 5: He sucked his turgid, two cork screwed peepee, and then
- 37:26Speaker 5: he kept going. He sucked his own toes, admiring his
- 37:30Speaker 5: sharp little toenails, his thick, diabolical thighs, locked his own
- 37:36Speaker 5: head in place, and.
- 37:40Speaker 3: Until his tight little horns drew blood.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Far from above, Emperor Palpatine watched the whole scene on the.
- 37:51Speaker 3: On the Galactic Ring can good day. He murmured, really
- 38:00Speaker 3: your anger.
- 38:04Speaker 5: Even in the throes of passion, Maul still couldn't help
- 38:06Speaker 5: but get a little silly.
- 38:08Speaker 3: Don't come yet, Darth Maul. I don't know I'm gonna come.
- 38:13Speaker 5: He tried to hold it back, but his top half
- 38:15Speaker 5: could feel his bottom half getting perilously close. When suddenly,
- 38:18Speaker 5: Maul felt a sharp pain at the bottom of his
- 38:21Speaker 5: top half, the part he couldn't quite see. Oh my god,
- 38:25Speaker 5: he said, trying to focus, but his bottom half seemed
- 38:29Speaker 5: to feel the pain too. The sharp pain contracted again again,
- 38:35Speaker 5: and Mal couldn't help but think of Obi Wan that
- 38:38Speaker 5: night nine months ago. Another sharp pain, and Mal's tummy turned.
- 38:49Speaker 5: Was that what this tummy ache was?
- 38:52Speaker 4: Could it be?
- 38:54Speaker 3: It could? Darth Maul was in labor and the baby
- 38:59Speaker 3: was coming fast.
- 39:01Speaker 5: Mal's top half fell to the floor in pain, leaving
- 39:04Speaker 5: his bottom to writhe in agony. The contraction subsided for
- 39:09Speaker 5: a moment, and Maul looked at how tenderly his bottom
- 39:12Speaker 5: half was delivering the baby. Maybe just one more suck,
- 39:18Speaker 5: Darth Maul sat on his own face and took his
- 39:21Speaker 5: peepee in his mouth, even though the baby was coming fast.
- 39:26Speaker 5: After mere moments, Mall's bottom half couldn't hold back.
- 39:29Speaker 6: He busted evil come everywhere, red and delicious, Mal was
- 39:38Speaker 6: so enamored with the taste of his own seed that
- 39:41Speaker 6: he could barely focus on delivering the baby.
- 39:46Speaker 3: The baby, his an obi Wan Kenobi's baby.
- 39:51Speaker 5: As Mal choked and sputtered on his own delicious evil come,
- 39:55Speaker 5: as his own thighs choked, his mean little neck lo
- 40:00Speaker 5: face flashed before his eyes.
- 40:02Speaker 3: How could Obi Wan have ever let this all go?
- 40:06Speaker 5: Fortified by the yummy bad boys Seamen, Mall's bottom half
- 40:11Speaker 5: dismounted as Mall's top half collapsed in birth pain again,
- 40:15Speaker 5: it was almost time. The bottom half couldn't speak, so
- 40:18Speaker 5: he farted supportively as.
- 40:22Speaker 3: The top half pushed.
- 40:24Speaker 5: I will never tell Obi Wan about you, Darth Mole,
- 40:28Speaker 5: yelled at the sky. I will send you to a
- 40:30Speaker 5: planet far away where he can never find you. The
- 40:34Speaker 5: last thing Male heard was the sound of his own child.
- 40:38Speaker 5: He and Obi Wan's child, eh well wanted.
- 40:58Speaker 2: What I didn't catch this at the show last night
- 41:02Speaker 2: is that it's Darth Maul's top half birthing the baby
- 41:07Speaker 2: out of his severed out of the bottom large opening.
- 41:11Speaker 5: Yeah, so, yeah, that is what's happening. I sort of
- 41:15Speaker 5: just to take you into my process. I had two
- 41:20Speaker 5: ideas and then I did them both.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Yes, I love that. I love that that was terrific
- 41:26Speaker 2: around them.
- 41:32Speaker 3: That took a lot out of me.
- 41:35Speaker 2: But I do think that we I think we're ready
- 41:38Speaker 2: now for to examine episode two.
- 41:42Speaker 3: And so we're going to cross your legs, change your pants.
- 41:48Speaker 3: We're getting back to business.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Yeah. So here is my video recap of episode two.
- 41:56Speaker 2: About ten years have passed since the first movie. There
- 42:00Speaker 2: about to be a vote in the Galactic Senate to
- 42:02Speaker 2: create an Army of the Republic to help the Jedi
- 42:06Speaker 2: deal with a recent separatist movement. The movie opens with
- 42:11Speaker 2: an assassination attempt that's made on Padme, who is now
- 42:14Speaker 2: a senator, but she survives, and Obi Wan and Anakin
- 42:19Speaker 2: are tasked with keeping her safe, and Anakin is so
- 42:23Speaker 2: happy and horny to see Padme again. Then someone tries
- 42:28Speaker 2: to kill her again, but Anakin saves Padme and chases
- 42:32Speaker 2: down the assassin, who's a woman. Okay, feminism. Then the
- 42:38Speaker 2: Jedi Council instructs Anakin to accompany Padme to her home
- 42:42Speaker 2: planet of Naboo, where she will be extra safe. And
- 42:46Speaker 2: they're kind of vibing, and they vibe some more.
- 42:50Speaker 3: I don't like sand It's coarse rough and irritated, and
- 42:57Speaker 3: he gets out everyone.
- 42:58Speaker 2: And they even kiss on the lists. But then now.
- 43:06Speaker 3: He should have done that.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Meanwhile, a clue from the assassin leads obi Wan to
- 43:11Speaker 2: the mysterious planet of Camino, where he learns from this
- 43:16Speaker 2: guy that a now dead Jedi Knight had already commissioned
- 43:20Speaker 2: an army of clones to be created to fight for
- 43:23Speaker 2: the Republic, and where like okay, I guess back on Naboo,
- 43:30Speaker 2: Anakin casually mentions that he loves dictatorships nice. Then they
- 43:37Speaker 2: returned to Vibing. Anakin tells Padme that he loves her.
- 43:42Speaker 2: She says it's not possible for them to be together.
- 43:45Speaker 3: I'm a senator.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Then Anakin has a premonition slash dream about his mother
- 43:51Speaker 2: being in danger, so he and Padme go to his
- 43:54Speaker 2: home planet of Tattooine to try to find his mother
- 43:58Speaker 2: and discovers that she has been captured. She dies in
- 44:03Speaker 2: his arms, which makes him so angry that he commits
- 44:08Speaker 2: several murders and now he wants to become powerful enough
- 44:14Speaker 2: to do this.
- 44:15Speaker 3: I will even learn to stop people from dying.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Okay. Meanwhile, obi Wan ends up at a droid factory
- 44:23Speaker 2: where he's captured by some bad guys. This dude is there,
- 44:27Speaker 2: Count Dooku, the leader of the separatist movement who has
- 44:32Speaker 2: been building a huge droid army to fight the Republic.
- 44:36Speaker 2: So Palpatine is like, well, if someone grants me extra power,
- 44:41Speaker 2: I can approve the use of this clone Army to
- 44:44Speaker 2: fight Douku's droid army. And Jar Jar Binks, who is
- 44:49Speaker 2: sort of a senator, now does that and gives Palpatine
- 44:53Speaker 2: supreme power and everyone is like, yes, exactly, we love this. Meanwhile,
- 45:00Speaker 2: Anakin and Padme have received word that Obi Wan is
- 45:04Speaker 2: in trouble, so they head off to save him. They
- 45:07Speaker 2: get trapped in the droid factory for a while. Pad
- 45:12Speaker 2: May is really good at not getting squished, but then
- 45:16Speaker 2: they're captured and Padme finally professes her love for Anakin.
- 45:22Speaker 2: I love you, and then they kiss on the lips again.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Then they're put into a gladiator style arena along with
- 45:31Speaker 2: Obi Wan to be executed by these big beasts. But
- 45:36Speaker 2: they manage to survive and fight off the droid Army
- 45:41Speaker 2: with the help of some other Jedi who show up.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Then the Clone Army appears, who I guess are the
- 45:48Speaker 2: good guys to battle the Droids who are the bad guys.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Then Count Dooku escapes, so Anakin and Obi Wan go
- 45:58Speaker 2: after him. Once past is launched out of the climax
- 46:02Speaker 2: of the movie, of course, and the Jedi fight Douku,
- 46:07Speaker 2: Anakin's arm gets chopped off. Yoda shows up, but Douku
- 46:12Speaker 2: escapes again and links up with his daddy boyfriend Darth Sedius,
- 46:17Speaker 2: and the movie ends with Anakin and Padme getting married
- 46:21Speaker 2: in secret and making out.
- 46:26Speaker 3: All right, they really do launch her right out at
- 46:34Speaker 3: the climax.
- 46:34Speaker 5: Oh boy, it's brutal. We've noticed this for years. But
- 46:39Speaker 5: she she rolls out of a plane.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Out of nowhere, and then Anakin's like, we have to
- 46:44Speaker 2: go back and get her, and obi Wan is.
- 46:45Speaker 5: Like, fuck her going on, and He's like, you're right,
- 46:50Speaker 5: that's what God would want me to continue to be
- 46:53Speaker 5: in the CIA instead.
- 46:56Speaker 3: I mean, this one is the boring one.
- 46:58Speaker 5: This one is like, I think generally considered, is this
- 47:02Speaker 5: anyone's favorite of the three?
- 47:04Speaker 10: Wow?
- 47:05Speaker 3: Weird?
- 47:06Speaker 2: Weird exactly, And I love how adamant you' were.
- 47:10Speaker 3: Yes, that was brave of you to say, yeah, this one.
- 47:15Speaker 5: I mean, this one isn't so focused on the relationship
- 47:19Speaker 5: and then a bunch of senator stuff. So I mean,
- 47:23Speaker 5: you've got me and this one dying the most gnarly death,
- 47:28Speaker 5: and now it's so brutal, and then you have like
- 47:34Speaker 5: Anakin and Badme and their relationship is just baffling. By
- 47:38Speaker 5: the end of this movie, like I get, like, I
- 47:41Speaker 5: guess I do like that the Jedi have to have
- 47:44Speaker 5: like rat tails.
- 47:46Speaker 2: When this is the one with the worst haircuts. Everyone
- 47:50Speaker 2: has a really bad haircut. Obi one looks like shit,
- 47:52Speaker 2: no offense, but.
- 47:55Speaker 5: Their relationship is like, I mean, like you sort of
- 47:58Speaker 5: get while it's like they're reconnecting app or the bone
- 48:01Speaker 5: chilling initiation in episode one, she's like, oh you turned
- 48:05Speaker 5: out hot, Sure we can hang out. Many of us
- 48:08Speaker 5: have been through a situation like that. You're like, I'm
- 48:10Speaker 5: just shocked that you don't look nine. I don't know,
- 48:15Speaker 5: but like by the end, he has said I think
- 48:20Speaker 5: dictatorships are worth a shot, and he's killed like women
- 48:26Speaker 5: and children, yes, after he finds out that his mother
- 48:30Speaker 5: was taken prisoner by them, and that scene between them
- 48:34Speaker 5: is so bizarre where he's like, I killed forty people
- 48:37Speaker 5: and she replies by saying everyone gets mad sometimes.
- 48:44Speaker 3: And I just want her to walk me through that.
- 48:49Speaker 5: For what Because they've been dating for like two weeks tops, like,
- 48:53Speaker 5: she this is the time to step.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Back, and most of that time is just Anakin like
- 49:00Speaker 2: being really creeply pining after her. And he said, I
- 49:05Speaker 2: wrote down a few choice quotes from him. Yeah, he says,
- 49:09Speaker 2: I've thought about her every day for the past ten years.
- 49:14Speaker 2: He says, she covered the cameras. I don't think she
- 49:17Speaker 2: liked me watching her.
- 49:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I like, I don't won where. He says, she's
- 49:22Speaker 3: not like other senators.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Yeah, but he also negs her job constantly. Pad Ma says,
- 49:30Speaker 2: don't look at me like that after he's leering at her,
- 49:34Speaker 2: and he says why and Padme says, because it makes
- 49:39Speaker 2: me uncomfortable. Anakin says, now that I'm with you again,
- 49:46Speaker 2: I'm in agony the thoughts of not being with you.
- 49:50Speaker 3: I can't breathe.
- 49:51Speaker 2: I'm haunted by the kids that should have never happened.
- 49:54Speaker 3: You are my very soul, tormenting. He's so like MySpace
- 50:02Speaker 3: coded that he communicates with others.
- 50:08Speaker 4: I don't know this.
- 50:09Speaker 5: I think that this relationship is the best Like Anakin
- 50:12Speaker 5: at this age specifically is the best possible use of
- 50:15Speaker 5: the bouschemmy test all right, which if you don't listen
- 50:19Speaker 5: to the show, is a character that we're supposed to
- 50:22Speaker 5: think is hot.
- 50:22Speaker 3: And cool and sexy and like la la la if
- 50:25Speaker 3: you replace him with current Steve buscemi is.
- 50:31Speaker 4: But yes, he.
- 50:35Speaker 5: Is the behavior Creepy and Anakin talked of. I mean,
- 50:39Speaker 5: it's creepy when hating Christiansen does it too, unfortunately.
- 50:43Speaker 3: But yeah, the relationship is very, very bizarre.
- 50:46Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 50:47Speaker 2: He also spends most of the time complaining to Padme
- 50:50Speaker 2: about Obi wan Kenobi. He's like he doesn't.
- 50:52Speaker 3: Notice what a freaking gene usfully you know.
- 50:56Speaker 5: Which this is like ties into and this like peaks
- 50:58Speaker 5: in episode three of Men Being Bitches, where I mean,
- 51:02Speaker 5: I feel like I've known. I mean, this happens to
- 51:05Speaker 5: people of all genders, but especially when a man gets
- 51:07Speaker 5: hyper fixated on another man and you're somehow catching the
- 51:11Speaker 5: stray constantly about like why doesn't Chris think I'm cool?
- 51:18Speaker 5: I don't fucking know, Chris isn't cool. I don't know
- 51:22Speaker 5: why are we talking about this?
- 51:24Speaker 3: I don't know. It's just it's weird. It's weird.
- 51:28Speaker 2: I think.
- 51:28Speaker 5: One of my favorite moments because in the first two movies,
- 51:33Speaker 5: I think Padme is relatively active, more active than a
- 51:36Speaker 5: lot of women in sci fi action were at this time.
- 51:40Speaker 3: So there's qualifiers.
- 51:42Speaker 5: But she does She and her handmaidens fight in the
- 51:46Speaker 5: first movie.
- 51:47Speaker 3: She is actively fighting through some.
- 51:51Speaker 5: Of the second movie until she's launched out of a plane,
- 51:54Speaker 5: but she does fight in the big Jedi battle thing.
- 51:57Speaker 3: But the thing that happens that's.
- 51:59Speaker 5: Very two thousand too, is the reason that this is
- 52:02Speaker 5: a porn costume, which is that she's wearing a full
- 52:05Speaker 5: costume and then some CGI monster passes and rips it
- 52:10Speaker 5: right here, and she's like, oh no, they God, I've
- 52:15Speaker 5: been doing sit.
- 52:16Speaker 3: Ups like it's it's so creepy. Old man wrote this line,
- 52:23Speaker 3: but I don't know.
- 52:24Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like there, it's it's not the worst movie
- 52:27Speaker 5: for women, but it is the worst movie to watch.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:45Speaker 5: All Right, We've got one more movie to talk about,
- 52:49Speaker 5: and then we can finally decide are these movies feminist masterpieces?
- 52:55Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 52:56Speaker 3: Start to start making your talies. We're gonna figure it out.
- 53:00Speaker 3: Let's check out episode three.
- 53:02Speaker 2: Yes, Count Dooku is waging war against the Republic. The
- 53:07Speaker 2: droid leader General Grievous has kidnapped Palpatine, who the Jedi
- 53:12Speaker 2: and everyone else still think is a good guy. So
- 53:15Speaker 2: Anakin and Obi Wan go on a rescue mission to
- 53:18Speaker 2: save Palpatine, but first they have to battle Dooku, who's
- 53:23Speaker 2: a Sith Lord now I guess, and Anakin chops his
- 53:27Speaker 2: freaking head off, but General Grievous gets away, so the
- 53:31Speaker 2: hunt for him continues. Anakin reunites with Padme, who tells
- 53:36Speaker 2: him I think she meant to say, I'm gregnand then
- 53:42Speaker 2: Anakin has another premonition dream thing that Padme dies during childbirth,
- 53:49Speaker 2: so he's distraught about that. Anakin is also growing frustrated
- 53:54Speaker 2: with the Jedi Council for not making him a Jedi
- 53:57Speaker 2: Master and for their distrit trust in Anakin's best buddy, Palpatine.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Then obi Wan heads off to find and destroy General Grievous.
- 54:09Speaker 2: They fight for a while with various weapons, and obi
- 54:14Speaker 2: Wan eventually defeats Grievous. Meanwhile, Palpatine is like, hey, Anakin,
- 54:21Speaker 2: maybe you should use the dark side of the Force
- 54:24Speaker 2: to prevent your wife from dying. I don't know, just
- 54:27Speaker 2: a thought, and Anakin is like, wait a minute, you're
- 54:31Speaker 2: the sith Lord we've been looking for. So mace Windu
- 54:35Speaker 2: goes to arrest Palpatine, but now Anakin is having second thoughts.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Maybe the dark Side isn't so bad, so he lets
- 54:43Speaker 2: Palpatine kill mace Windu. Then Palpatine, who looks like this now,
- 54:50Speaker 2: takes on Anakin as his syth apprentice and tells Anakin
- 54:56Speaker 2: they better kill all the Jedi, including children. Ah and
- 55:01Speaker 2: then Palpatine has his clone army execute most of the
- 55:05Speaker 2: other Jedi, though Yoda survives, as does Obi Wan. Meanwhile,
- 55:11Speaker 2: Anakin travels to a lava planet to kill the remaining
- 55:17Speaker 2: leaders of the separatist movement. Obi Wan and Padme realize
- 55:22Speaker 2: that Anakin has turned to the dark Side, so they
- 55:25Speaker 2: show up and try to talk some sense into him,
- 55:28Speaker 2: but Anakin is like no, thank you pass, so he
- 55:33Speaker 2: and obi Wan have a very long lightsaber battle. Then
- 55:38Speaker 2: this happens.
- 55:48Speaker 7: Chosen One, it would said that you would destroy this
- 55:53Speaker 7: and not join them.
- 56:02Speaker 2: Oh no, and Obi Wan is like bye and leaves
- 56:09Speaker 2: Anakin to die, but then Palpatine shows up to save him.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Anakin gets medical attention and becomes the familiar Darth Vader
- 56:17Speaker 2: that we all know and love and He's like, where
- 56:21Speaker 2: is Padme? But Padme is busy dying during childbirth, just
- 56:26Speaker 2: like in Anakin's premonition. But the twin babies Luke and
- 56:30Speaker 2: Lea ever heard of them, are born, and Yoda and
- 56:34Speaker 2: Obi Wan make arrangements for who will take care of
- 56:38Speaker 2: the babies, and it all sets up the original Star
- 56:41Speaker 2: Wars trilogy.
- 56:42Speaker 3: We the end, We our time for Kaylin's vacas. That's
- 56:50Speaker 3: it forever. I thank you, all right, Well you got
- 56:58Speaker 3: Padme getting launched out of.
- 56:59Speaker 5: The last This movie was a gregious what if. I okay,
- 57:04Speaker 5: there's this movie.
- 57:05Speaker 3: I do like.
- 57:07Speaker 5: I think this movie is the most fun because it's
- 57:10Speaker 5: the most men being bitchy.
- 57:16Speaker 3: It's the longest.
- 57:17Speaker 5: I love how they're screaming like Shakespearean sentences to each
- 57:21Speaker 5: other across lava pits. There's a great line from Anakin
- 57:26Speaker 5: where he's like, uh where uh?
- 57:28Speaker 3: Obi Wan is like, oh the Jedi, Like the Jedi
- 57:32Speaker 3: are good?
- 57:32Speaker 5: This is they're evil, and then Anakin shouts from forty
- 57:35Speaker 5: yards away. In my opinion, it is the Jedi, we
- 57:39Speaker 5: are evil, and we're like, got it cool? Just in
- 57:46Speaker 5: case you had any doubt of where he was at.
- 57:50Speaker 5: But no, I mean the fact that that whole scene
- 57:52Speaker 5: starts by uh Anakin choking and throwing his very pregnant
- 57:57Speaker 5: wife on the ground. Obi Wan is there and they're
- 58:00Speaker 5: just like, well, time to walk around each other traumatically.
- 58:06Speaker 3: She's good, she's good. Don't worry about it.
- 58:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not the best.
- 58:11Speaker 3: Uh we do.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Well, look at that colorful commentary from me, As you said,
- 58:19Speaker 2: the men being bitchy to each other is awesome. Actually,
- 58:22Speaker 2: I love to watch it. We uh, we've got bitchy Anakin,
- 58:27Speaker 2: We've got bitchy Palpatine is a huge bitch in this
- 58:31Speaker 2: Yoda Doo bitch.
- 58:33Speaker 5: It's so weird because it's like, if you grew up
- 58:35Speaker 5: with the with the original movies, you're like, oh, this
- 58:37Speaker 5: funny muppet who has superpowers, But in the prequels, I
- 58:41Speaker 5: was like, Yoda is a stern, bitchy nine hundred year
- 58:45Speaker 5: old who thinks children are.
- 58:47Speaker 3: Old and should stop whining for their mommies.
- 58:52Speaker 2: Like, yeah, well that's the thing. Like, and this has
- 58:56Speaker 2: been discussed. There's actually a great pop culture detective video
- 59:00Speaker 2: essay about this, but basically, the like Jedi obsession with
- 59:04Speaker 2: like emotional repression, and since most of the Jedi who
- 59:08Speaker 2: we meet, our men were like, yikes, this never ends.
- 59:12Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I feel like, yeah, the two sides. I
- 59:15Speaker 3: think it's like intentionally done. But the two sides of
- 59:18Speaker 3: this conflict.
- 59:19Speaker 5: They're either like men should compartmentalize their feelings to a
- 59:24Speaker 5: degree that is unreasonable, or they should use their emotions
- 59:28Speaker 5: to commit violence against others, and there's just no one
- 59:33Speaker 5: that has the happy medium. They're like, this is these
- 59:36Speaker 5: are the two states. These are the two genders of
- 59:39Speaker 5: man feelings. And it doesn't work out too great. As
- 59:46Speaker 5: for our friend Padme, she really gets the short end
- 59:49Speaker 5: of the stick in this one. I think it for
- 59:51Speaker 5: in like eighty percent of the scene she's in, she's
- 59:53Speaker 5: just pregnant.
- 59:54Speaker 3: And crying at her apartment.
- 59:56Speaker 5: Yes, it's so frustrating watching this because at the end,
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: her like big last scene before she goes to the
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: Lava planet, she's like in the Senate and she says
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: that like whatever weird, Like like she's like, oh, we
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: had democracy now we don't like oh oh no, shoot,
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: which that maybe that line would hit harder if you
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: saw a single scene.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: Of her going to work, like ostensibly she hasn't been
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: to work.
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, maybe democracy wouldn't have fallen if
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: you clocked in one once or twice.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Yeah, well I made a little just kind of like
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: just reflection on what what did women do during these movies?
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: It's not that much so you did, so don't buckle
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: in because it won't take long, Padme. Like you said,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: she does fight in a couple of battles, especially the
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: kind of like climactic third act battle of the first
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: movie and the second movie before she gets inevitably launched
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: out of it. But there's that scene in like the
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Gladiator where she like saves herself and I was like, what,
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: I can't believe that they let her do that?
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Oh they did. They were like, as long as she's wearing.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: A crop top. He yes, yes, yes, yes. She does
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: a couple senate things. What are they? We're not sure exactly.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: And then there's a lot of fridging in this movie,
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: first with like Anakin's mother, Me gets fridged in the
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: second movie and.
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: That, and if you don't know what that means, it's
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: basically a woman character uh being killed off to advance
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: the plot of the male protagonists, which is what happens
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: to every woman in this movie.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: And they have the fact.
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: That Anakin has like what it seems like sometimes his
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: only connection to the force is that he has a
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: bad dream topless when a lady's about to die, I
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: feel like.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: His one force power.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Wow, this is a pretty pretty useful.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: The women who I know they might die, I don't know,
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: wakes up all sexy.
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: You too, Yeah, mom, Yeah, so that happens.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: Shmi dies in the second movie to kind of like
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: start to contribute to his arc to become Darth Vader.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: And then it really takes full form with Padme being
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: fridged at the end where they're like the droid is like,
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: we don't know why she's dying.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: Oh my god, I love that she just lost the
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: will to live.
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: The medical yeah, the medical professional, I mean this is
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: somehow times how anyone who is in this is Man.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Is treated at the doctor.
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: But they're like they like, you know, strong, they strung out,
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: and they're like, well, she's perfectly healthy, but she's dying.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: So you better get in there.
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: And they're like, we haven't tried anything, and we're not going.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: To to be fair if I did as much like
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: ignoring of red flags as Padme does to Anakin, and
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: like and then saw in front of my eyes him
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: becoming a sith lord. I would also die. I'd be like, Wow, she's.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: Dying of embarrassment. She's like, my husband's being so embarrassing.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: I'm gonna get out of here.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: I'm going to join the forest because I mean, look,
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: many such cases that happens.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: It happens.
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: So yeah, that's I mean, there is Okay, maybe this
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: this duvetails into something that that I'd like to discuss.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Indeed, Yeah, the only other thing I was gonna say
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: about it is just like, other than those few examples
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: we just listed, women are basically inconsequential to the movies.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: You have, like a couple women jedies. What are their names?
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Who are they? What have they done? We have no
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: idea thing with like a woman fighter pilot. Sometimes there's
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: like women in the Senate or doing political thing. But again,
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: like we just don't. We know nothing. We know nothing
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: about any of them. We know nothing.
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: But what if I told you I spent the last
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: couple of weeks reading twenty five comic books, four novels,
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: a million Wikipedia pages, and generally wasted a lot of
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: my one human life reading all the one thing. Okay,
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: so this is like kind of like it's cheating when
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: there's like feminist retconning of an obviously not feminist franchise.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: But I like to watch them try.
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: So I wanted to share with you, Caitlin Dorante and
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: you audience, an argument for Padme being a good character.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: Maybe let's go go Okay, we could do that.
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: Let it play'd at our show yesterday, that sound cute
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: was playing whenever it was starting in the middle of sentences,
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: way before it was supposed.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: To happen, and then it was supposed to happen.
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: Okay, So I'll be as quick as I can, but
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: I do need to justify all five thousand hours I
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: spent reading every single ancillary piece of Padme content, and
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: there's a lot of it.
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: Okay, So let's go to the next slide. I am
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: the Padme defender.
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: I am a white woman with brown hair, so it
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: is therefore my duty to attempt So let's first look
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: at the next slide with the women we get in
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: the movie, and then I'll talk to you about what
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: we found. Right, our first lady is Padme, a queen
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: who becomes a senator, who later becomes a fridge wife.
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: And a baby machine. She dies for plot reasons.
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: Next Shmi, an enslaved woman who immaculately conceives bad Jesus
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: and then becomes a friged mommy. The Handmaidens. There's a
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: bunch of them and they all look like padme on purpose. Look,
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: there's one's head right over there. We don't get to see.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: We see them die.
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: More often than we see them speak. Next zam Wessele
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: question mark.
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: We know, we know her, we love her.
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: In the middle of uh trying to find five women,
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: I really started.
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: To struggle, which is why, which is why I'm ending here?
- 1:06:38Speaker 7: Uh?
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: Or her?
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: Who's that? I don't know?
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: But maybe she was really important at one time on
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: her planet of origin.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: We'll never know.
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: And with that I wanted to go to other people
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: that I would describe as her. On the next line, her,
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: let's so, let's let's just take a moment for for
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: her and what about in her?
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: Remember her? And her? Who could forget her? She's a
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: little bullerry, but we love her? What about her?
- 1:07:14Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: Also I think she's from a deleted scene. Her her,
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: she's pretty bright.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: Her, she's the hot her, the same She's Oh no,
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: I really.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: Well, that's that's if you go to the She's actually
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: pretty important if you go to the if you click again, yeah,
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: she's important if you're a dork, I found out.
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: And then and then finally there's her, and so in
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: a way, there's a lot of women. It's a rich tapestry.
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: So I wanted to as I was looking through all
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: of this behind the scenes footage, I wanted to see
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: what did George Lucas or Natalie Portman have to say
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: about the feminist masterpiece that they were part dissipating him.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: And I have the information. Let's go to the video.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: This is my sext up version.
- 1:08:08Speaker 10: I guess of the queen got over the hump of eighteen,
- 1:08:12Speaker 10: so I'm allowed to show tummy now.
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: I guess, okay, we can stop the clip there where
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: we can stop there, and then Samuel la Jackson's like,
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: the love story is really good. So that is all
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: I was able to find in a discussion of women
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: at all in four and a half hours of behind
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: the scene footage and featuring the phrase the hump of
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: eighteen bone chilling that What's even worse, though, is in
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: a movie that Caitlin you sent yourself features at least
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: a half hour a piece of ships taking off and landing.
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: There were actually scenes filmed for Padme in which things
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: happened to her.
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: It drives me up a wall. Okay, In episode two,
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: all really quick, we have a whole.
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: Scene where we meet her family, we meet her sister,
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: We understand her political motivation. She worked with refugee children
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: when she was a kid, That's why she wanted to
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: be a senator.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: And then in episode three.
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: Even though we really only ever see her pregnant and
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: crying in an apartment, there was a whole story there.
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: Originally that was replaced with ships taking off and landing.
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: Fortunately those we just.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: Couldn't cut it.
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: But there is this whole story where Padme in the
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: world of Star Wars, and I wouldn't have known any
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: of this information with a gun to my head ten
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: days ago.
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: But she is known as the mother of.
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: The Resistance, right or the rebellion, because in this movie,
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: she originally confronts Palpatine, tries to at least lightly push
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: back on fascism, and actually does do stuff at work.
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: We just ended up thinking, you know, George Lucas decided
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: it was pointless.
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: But you do see a couple of boring Senate meetings
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: in which she is saying fascism should we not?
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: Here's one I can't believe it has come to this.
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: Chencer Palpatine is one of my oldest advisors. He served
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: as my ambassador when I was Queen.
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: Senator, I fear you underestimate the amount of corruption that
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: has taken.
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: Hold in the Senate.
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: Okay, And the next clip we meet another senator who
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: I wish we got in the movies.
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: I like to call him the Australian guy. We cannot
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: let this turn into another war. Absolutely, that is the
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: last thing we want.
- 1:10:33Speaker 8: We are hoping to form an alliance in the Senate
- 1:10:35Speaker 8: to stop the Chancellor from further subverting the Constitution.
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: That's all I know.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: A Jedi.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: I feel we should consult.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: There would be dangerous.
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: We don't know how the Jedi fit into all this.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: I only wish to discuss this with one one I trust.
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: Going against the Chancellor without the support of the Jedi
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: is risky.
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: The Jedi are not any happier with the situation than
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: we are.
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: Patient, Senator, we have so many senators on our side.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Surely that will supplice.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: I want to stop it there, hell, And the final
- 1:11:16Speaker 5: scene I wanted to share is uh when she confronts
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: Palpatine directly, and don't worry, the Australian guy is there too.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: You are pursuing a diplomatic solution.
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: To the war, then you must trust me to do
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: the right things, Senator.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: That is why I am here.
- 1:11:35Speaker 10: Surely I said you can stop there, okay, So really
- 1:11:43Speaker 10: quickly into the Padme verse, I want to talk about
- 1:11:46Speaker 10: the handmaidens.
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: They are the interchangeable doubles, so some of them are
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: also played by very famous actors.
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: First we have Sabe.
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: Played by Kura Knightley. Canonically, Sabe is Padme's best friend.
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: She eventually quits the job with Padme and goes on
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: to liberate slaves on Tattooine, where Anakin is from. And
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: then when Padme dies, she joined She infiltrates Darth Vader's
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: posse and pretends to be Padme's ghost. So she's really
- 1:12:19Speaker 5: she's a cool character. Let's mix some the naming convention up,
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: shall we just kidding? Robbie Robbie, she is sort of
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: the fashion girl of the group.
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: She designs those cool hot topic robes. Who else do we.
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: Have Yana, of course, a canonically gay character who marries Sach.
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: Isn't that fun?
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: Good for them? Two identical women.
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: Married great and then finally played by Rose Byrne, we
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: have Dorme who joins Padme when she is a senator.
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: Now you might be looking at saj and be like,
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: that's a familiar face.
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: Who the hell is that? Well, that is Sophia Cole.
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: That is, in fact, Sofia Coppola. If if you go
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: again she is that is her in the Phantom Menace.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: And if you're wondering, does she remember doing that? No,
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: she doesn't. She doesn't remember. She had to be reminded.
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: Like we were saying, there are we see the Handmaidens
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: die more frequently than we see them do stuff on screen.
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: So I just wanted to talk about the two who die. Uh,
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: those are Corda and Verse. Corde gets a nice death moment.
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: Padme is like, oh girl, sorry, right. Meanwhile, there is
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: another one who dies. Padme does not seem concerned about it.
- 1:13:41Speaker 5: I don't know what she did. All right, Let's pivot
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: to talk about Shmi really quickly. I want to just
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: say Shmi was almost played by Bijork. That would have
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: been cool Army of Shmi.
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: B York joke. So Shmi's character is also feminis redconned
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: in these books.
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: We turned her into and the next slide a woman
- 1:14:04Speaker 5: in stem because there is exactly one shot where Shmi
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: is near a computer chip, and so this poor author was.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: Like, okay, okay, we can do this.
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: And in the in the expanded Universe, she develops technology
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: that ends up disabling tracking devices and freeing enslaved people.
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: In the movie, she just dies.
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: The last thing is Sabe. So, like I was saying,
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: she's pad that's her pretending to be Padme's ghost, and
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: she almost kills Darth Vader, but then she's like, I
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: think he's kind of nice. That's sort of where that ends.
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: There's other weird Padme stuff. There's this comic book where
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: Padme is with jar Jar and there's a lot of
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: jokes about her looking at his butt.
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: In conclusion.
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: In conclusion, look, the people are still thy thinking about
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: these women for a reason, and for those there, there
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: are feminist retcon stories everywhere.
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: For those with eyes to see.
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: And so I wanted to share my discoveries and argue
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: that Padme is a good character.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: Actually concluded done. Wow, God, so have I convinced you?
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: No?
- 1:15:29Speaker 8: Oh?
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: Good? Four thousand hours well spent.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: I mean it's nice that there's all that extra ancillary
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: like material about her, But as far as we'll we
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: get in the movies, which is what most people have consumed.
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's much and I feel like that's what
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: happens in almost like every single big franchise is like.
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: It's very very bland and vanilla.
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: And then any of the stuff that is inclusive of
- 1:15:56Speaker 5: not white guys is like a comic book that twelve
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: people have red. Right, It's just so they can be like, well, no,
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: you have to really dig, you know. So anyways, Yeah,
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: she is a feminist legend and we miss her.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: We miss her so much. All right, it's too bad
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: she died due to complications of will.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: To live, losing the will to live.
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: But the most important, I mean the question, not the
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: one of the least important question we talk about in
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: this show is do these movies pass the Bechdel That
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: is such a good question.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: I now here's what I have done. I've edited another
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: little video and this is a super cut. Oh there's
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: no it's.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: Good to keep going. Another Haunted soundcum.
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: So basically I did a supercut of not even all
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: the times the movie passes the Bechdel test. These are
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: just the moments in these movies, all three of them,
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: where women interact, and so let's take a look at
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: what that looks like.
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: See.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: So this is where we're the live show portion of
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: the episode. If you do want to watch that video
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: of the super cut of all the times women interact
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: in the Prequels trilogy, again, that's on our YouTube channel.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: You can find the link to that at link tree
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: slash Bechdel Test. Either way, we concluded that the entire
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: trilogy does not pass the Bechdel test, and even if
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: it does kind of technically pass, it still basically doesn't,
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: at least not spiritually. So if you can believe it,
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: a Star Wars movie doesn't pass the Bechdel test. However,
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: our nipple scale where we rate the movie or the
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: trilogy on a scale of zero to five nipples, examining
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: it through an intersectional feminist lens. Based on everything you
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: heard us talk about in the live show, I'm going
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: to go ahead and give this a half nipple. Yeah,
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: I don't think it deserves any more than that.
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: I'm also going to give it a half nipple in
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: spite of the fact, as I talked about in the
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: you know, all the things I like about the prequels
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: are not text to the Prequels.
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: So shout out to the various authors.
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: That have in the you know, two decades since these
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: movies came out, fleshed characters out that people were interested in.
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: George Lucas did not do that.
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: And you I don't believe that he would have ever
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: intended that.
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: So sorry, Peapa, It's going to.
- 1:18:26Speaker 11: Be a half nitbowl.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. And then we ended the live show with
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: a I would say very well choreographed lightsaber battle between
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: the two of us. It was special effects, amazing technology
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: high and by that visualized stunning. We looked great. We
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: had lightsabers and we found out that they went beer
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: and everything. So if you if you were there, you
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: can attest that it was earth shaking.
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: It was beautiful.
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: It was in earth shaking, naboo shaking, tattooine shaking.
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: I could go on, namboo is never the same after
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: what we did, which is just another reason to come
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: to our live shows when we come to your town,
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: which we very may well next year and absolutely with
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: that in mind, if you are a fan of the
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: show and want more of the show and are not
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: currently a member of our Patreon aka Matreon, we do

- 1:19:33Speaker 5: over on the Matreon to give matrons a first shot

- 1:19:46Speaker 5: of it. Matrons get bonus buttons at our merch tables,
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: So come and get some cool stuff that's at patreon

- 1:20:00Speaker 5: two hundred episode back catalog, and you know, access to
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: the community announcements and the community in general.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: Indeed, and thank you again to everyone who came out
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: to the live shows on this tour. Thank you again
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: to the venues for having us. So shouts out to
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: the Fountain Square Theater in Indianapolis as well as Let's
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: Fest because our Indianapolis show was a part of Let's
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: Fest comedy festival, so thank you to them for having us.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: Thanks to the Den Theater in Chicago, the Burr Oak
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: in Madison, and the Dudley Riggs Theater in Minneapolis. And
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: with that, should we go have another lightsaber battle where
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: we almost kiss, which is what happened on stage this time.
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: Let's do it.
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: The cerbating allegations were not beating them.
