- 0:00Speaker 1: I want the two guys in front of me. I'm
- 0:01Speaker 1: about to take trip and know that now in nine
- 0:04Speaker 1: three three kjr dot com for your chance to win
- 0:07Speaker 1: twenty five hundred dollars, Ian Forness will have another word
- 0:09Speaker 1: for you at two o'clock. I thought you might play
- 0:13Speaker 1: the theme to Caddyshack or something here, Chris, you're trying
- 0:17Speaker 1: to show how young I am. I've only seen that
- 0:20Speaker 1: movie on clips, and.
- 0:22Speaker 2: You want me to come back with Caddyshack music.
- 0:25Speaker 1: My apologies, that's true. I've we came out before you
- 0:29Speaker 1: were bored by ten years or so. The three guys
- 0:32Speaker 1: in front of me have seen Caddyshack, I'm sure. In
- 0:34Speaker 1: the studio with me here and La Band Seattle, Quinn Burwell,
- 0:39Speaker 1: Carson Church, and coach Max Rose. Quinn and Carson are
- 0:43Speaker 1: from Roosevelt High School. They own the Roosevelt High School
- 0:46Speaker 1: golf team here in Seattle, right up the street from
- 0:49Speaker 1: where I live, the same school my twins graduated from
- 0:52Speaker 1: in twenty twenty one. So yeah, I'm a little partial
- 0:55Speaker 1: to the story here, But what we're really trying to
- 0:57Speaker 1: do is highlight something that is really unusual because it
- 1:00Speaker 1: was both Quinn and Carson qualified for the US Junior
- 1:04Speaker 1: Amateur Championship next month in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. How unusual is
- 1:08Speaker 1: that worldwide people try to qualify for this, and only
- 1:12Speaker 1: two hundred and sixty four do And we have two
- 1:15Speaker 1: of them from the same high school, that walked the
- 1:18Speaker 1: same halls, on the same golf team that qualified. And
- 1:21Speaker 1: that's pretty cool. And that's why Quinn and Carson are here.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Thanks to coach Max Rose for bringing this to our attention,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and here they are. Hi, guys, Hi there, how are you?
- 1:30Speaker 1: We are great? And especially Quinn, thank you for showing
- 1:34Speaker 1: up at day A morning after your graduation. Last night.
- 1:37Speaker 1: What time did you get in and what time did
- 1:39Speaker 1: you get up?
- 1:40Speaker 3: We had senior spree, so I got I got home
- 1:42Speaker 3: at six ten am.
- 1:44Speaker 4: This we man.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Sorry, but thank you. I know that was tough.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Well this is I'm super excited. Thanks for having me.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Oh you're welcome. Thank you. Quinn. Where did you go
- 1:55Speaker 1: last night? At least on the record, you don't have the.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Author It was a school organized event. We took some
- 2:03Speaker 3: buses down to soda, went to a warehouse, had some
- 2:06Speaker 3: non money gambling, and then uh yeah, I drove up
- 2:10Speaker 3: to everyone and went to Flying Squirrel at two am.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Flying Squirrel Pizza spot, right.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Uh no, No, the trampoline park. Oh am, yeah, two
- 2:20Speaker 3: to five thirty. We're at the trampoline park.
- 2:23Speaker 1: They go crazy, Greg, what'd you do today? We will
- 2:27Speaker 1: the hypnotist.
- 2:29Speaker 2: We went a bunch of different places, but we were
- 2:31Speaker 2: at the Seattle Center and I got hypnotized. So that
- 2:33Speaker 2: was kind of like my hourah moment being under hypnosiswells.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Quimbow Burwell is not only a national world caliber golfer
- 2:44Speaker 1: who's going to Golf A Santa Clara next year, he
- 2:46Speaker 1: is also a trampolinist in the middle of the night
- 2:48Speaker 1: after graduating. Congratulations many friends on that guys. First of all,
- 2:54Speaker 1: let's tell the story first, Quinn, then Carson, because seniority.
- 2:59Speaker 1: We'll go went first the senior on how you qualified
- 3:02Speaker 1: for the US Junior Amateur Championship.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Yeah, so I earned an exemption from the Washington State
- 3:08Speaker 3: Junior Amateur event. I was down in Yakima, just shot
- 3:14Speaker 3: twelve under after three days and one.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Which that's all twelve under. Yeah yeah, that wasn't on
- 3:21Speaker 1: a mini golf course. I'm sorry, go ahead.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Yeah, So that win earned me exemption into the tournament,
- 3:29Speaker 3: which is awesome.
- 3:30Speaker 1: In Carson, you had an even more harrowing route.
- 3:33Speaker 5: It sounds like, well, yeah, I played in the usual route,
- 3:37Speaker 5: which is the one round qualifier, and I think it
- 3:40Speaker 5: was like eighty five people for three spots and I
- 3:44Speaker 5: shot three under, which was able to get me into
- 3:46Speaker 5: a playoff, a two two for one playoff, and I
- 3:53Speaker 5: part of the first hole and the guy I played
- 3:55Speaker 5: with misster short putt.
- 3:56Speaker 4: So I got through.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Can you describe to us first the mindset of going
- 4:01Speaker 1: to a one day, winner take all tournament.
- 4:05Speaker 5: I mean it's just like you gotta you gotta believe
- 4:09Speaker 5: that you can have that good day. I mean, if
- 4:11Speaker 5: you don't believe, you're gonna have that because because you
- 4:14Speaker 5: got to play much better than your average round to
- 4:16Speaker 5: get in there. I had one of my best rounds
- 4:18Speaker 5: of the summer there and I still didn't even get through.
- 4:21Speaker 6: Like without a playoff?
- 4:23Speaker 1: What was this McCormick Woods, Okay?
- 4:26Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 4:26Speaker 1: And so on eighteen did you part? Did you? Birdie?
- 4:30Speaker 1: I parted it okay? And then the guy behind you
- 4:32Speaker 1: that tied you, what do he come after you?
- 4:35Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 4:35Speaker 4: So we played at the same time.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Because you were paired together.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Yeah, and I finished out, made my three footer for par,
- 4:43Speaker 5: and then he missed like a short four foot putt.
- 4:46Speaker 5: The nerves there, anything can happen like that guy. He's
- 4:50Speaker 5: the best golfer in Washington and he and he missed
- 4:55Speaker 5: a short putt. Because it just means a lot to
- 4:57Speaker 5: these people.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I think YouTube might be the best golfers in Washington.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I don't know, if you're at the US Junior Am,
- 5:04Speaker 1: I think maybe you might maybe coach Max Roe's first
- 5:09Speaker 1: of all, the accomplishment of two guys from the same
- 5:12Speaker 1: high school golf program making the US Junior Am.
- 5:14Speaker 4: It's huge, it's huge, and I've never had anyone make
- 5:18Speaker 4: it from our team We've been I've been coaching this
- 5:21Speaker 4: team for ten eleven years something like that, and it
- 5:25Speaker 4: hasn't even been on our radar. And so when Carson
- 5:28Speaker 4: made it a couple of weeks ago, I was like, Wow,
- 5:31Speaker 4: this is amazing. We got to hype this up. And
- 5:33Speaker 4: then a week later, Quinn says, oh, remember that thing
- 5:37Speaker 4: Carson just qualified. I did. I did that too, And
- 5:40Speaker 4: so he sent me the picture of himself holding all
- 5:42Speaker 4: these trophies, and yeah, I was like, well, this is
- 5:44Speaker 4: a pretty cool story. I can't imagine there's a lot
- 5:46Speaker 4: of teammates showing up to this tournament.
- 5:49Speaker 1: How did the team do the Roosevelt Golf team do?
- 5:51Speaker 4: The team did great? We are finished. We've just had
- 5:55Speaker 4: our third straight undefeated season, third straight metro champion and
- 6:00Speaker 4: ship we got second in state two years ago and
- 6:05Speaker 4: third and state this year.
- 6:07Speaker 1: How we talk so much about team sports on this
- 6:10Speaker 1: station in this market, football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and recently
- 6:15Speaker 1: what is the dynamic for both of you golfers and
- 6:18Speaker 1: you the coach of an individual sport, this individual golfing,
- 6:23Speaker 1: but yet team for team results and like you said,
- 6:26Speaker 1: state championship, is there a selflessness you have to instill?
- 6:30Speaker 3: Or how do you?
- 6:31Speaker 1: How did what's the approach of that?
- 6:34Speaker 4: Well? Luckily for me, I have a couple assistant coaches,
- 6:37Speaker 4: coaching Nicole and coach Gross that can kind of spread
- 6:40Speaker 4: out around the course with me and we can be
- 6:42Speaker 4: in communication. So we are keeping an eye on cuts,
- 6:46Speaker 4: We're keeping an eye on mental states of everybody, and
- 6:50Speaker 4: we kind of know where we need to be. Uh.
- 6:53Speaker 4: And so I can walk up to Quinn and be like, hey,
- 6:56Speaker 4: our team is doing good right now. We don't need
- 6:58Speaker 4: to do anything crazy. Just keep playing your game, play
- 7:01Speaker 4: smart and uh, that's kind of our plan. And we
- 7:06Speaker 4: qualified the first day at State and it was pretty intense.
- 7:10Speaker 4: One of our juniors, Henry, sunka twelve foot downhill putt
- 7:15Speaker 4: that if he missed, would have gone I don't know,
- 7:17Speaker 4: another ten to fifteen.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a twelve foot down hut downhill birdie putt.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Birdie putt. Yeah. And so we're all sitting there on
- 7:26Speaker 4: the hill watching this is in Spokane, and and we
- 7:29Speaker 4: just needed a two putt for the team and he
- 7:32Speaker 4: just tapped it and it went right in for Bertie
- 7:35Speaker 4: and it was huge for the team.
- 7:37Speaker 1: It was great. Quentin Carson, how do you do the
- 7:40Speaker 1: team approach in an individual sport like that? Do you
- 7:44Speaker 1: like to know, like your coaches said, where the team
- 7:46Speaker 1: is at and how does that change you? Do you
- 7:49Speaker 1: then not maybe do you lay up instead of going
- 7:52Speaker 1: for the green or in those situations? How do you
- 7:55Speaker 1: incorporate a team mentality into this individual sport?
- 7:58Speaker 5: Well, I feel like the key for me at least,
- 8:00Speaker 5: it's just like I don't like looking at the leaderboards
- 8:03Speaker 5: or thinking about the whole team thing. I just like
- 8:07Speaker 5: remind myself that even when it's like going bad, that
- 8:10Speaker 5: every shot matters, and my team's gonna care about these shots,
- 8:14Speaker 5: even if it's in a rough position, even if I'm
- 8:17Speaker 5: in like not the best position. And but I don't
- 8:21Speaker 5: like to check the leaderboards or see exactly where I'm at.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Like in our district championship, I was doing pretty good
- 8:27Speaker 5: and I didn't check the leaderboard once until the very
- 8:30Speaker 5: end because I just wanted to stay to stick to
- 8:32Speaker 5: my plan because I knew that that's what would that's
- 8:34Speaker 5: what would probably make the best results.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Quinn, Uh, Yeah, same thing. Oftentimes those the leaderboard are
- 8:42Speaker 3: kind of the external results of playing well, like winning
- 8:44Speaker 3: the tournament or exemption can just be a distraction from
- 8:47Speaker 3: your current shot. And I try to and I think, Carson,
- 8:51Speaker 3: it's you play your game, and then on the eighteenth pole,
- 8:54Speaker 3: I like to check it, but once I'm in the fairway,
- 8:56Speaker 3: because I don't want the nerves on the t shot,
- 8:59Speaker 3: So I'll check it in the fairway and know where
- 9:01Speaker 3: we stand.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Carson and Quinn, how would you guys having each other
- 9:07Speaker 2: as teammates, how would you guys have since that you've
- 9:09Speaker 2: helped each other get to this point through your journey?
- 9:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been awesome having Carson as a teammates since
- 9:17Speaker 3: when I was a sophomore. He joined the team as
- 9:19Speaker 3: a freshman, and yeah, he just balled out in tryouts
- 9:24Speaker 3: and played really well, and it's just motivating. I mean,
- 9:27Speaker 3: it's all. He's a great person, great friend, and it's
- 9:30Speaker 3: awesome to have that person on your team and who's
- 9:33Speaker 3: also really good at golf to just motivate you every
- 9:36Speaker 3: day to work harder, be able to play with him
- 9:37Speaker 3: outside of school golf and just just compete each other,
- 9:42Speaker 3: compete with each other and push each other to do better.
- 9:45Speaker 1: When did each of you begin golfing?
- 9:47Speaker 5: Carson, Well, I mean I had a club in my
- 9:50Speaker 5: hand at eighteen months. Okay, my family has been golfing
- 9:56Speaker 5: for like a long time, but I didn't, like, I
- 10:00Speaker 5: wasn't the best golfer until like eighth grade. I got
- 10:02Speaker 5: really hooked on the game and started to get my
- 10:05Speaker 5: handicapped down. And that's getting that handicapped down is what
- 10:08Speaker 5: got me hooked on the game and trying trying to
- 10:10Speaker 5: qualify for the high school golf team. That was one
- 10:12Speaker 5: of my big goals and it just like I got addicted.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Yeah, similar to cards and I've been playing every I've
- 10:21Speaker 3: been playing with my grandfather and my dad and my
- 10:24Speaker 3: mom and my grandmother since very young age, and I
- 10:28Speaker 3: never really got into it. I did Junior PGA, which
- 10:32Speaker 3: is kind of a junior golf organization, and I was
- 10:37Speaker 3: always soccer, baseball, tennis, with a little bit of golf
- 10:41Speaker 3: on the side for fun. And then my freshman year,
- 10:43Speaker 3: after playing the high school golf, I realized how fun
- 10:46Speaker 3: it was and rose cultivated an environment in which it
- 10:49Speaker 3: was pretty awesome and really fun to compete and just
- 10:52Speaker 3: went all in.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I assume both you have private coaches or maybe not.
- 10:57Speaker 1: When did you hire a private coach.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I've tried a couple coaches, and that was sophomore year
- 11:05Speaker 5: when I started getting real lessons. Everything I did in
- 11:08Speaker 5: eighth grade and freshman year was just from like my
- 11:11Speaker 5: grandparents and yeah YouTube really yeah cool.
- 11:18Speaker 3: I started getting lessons from Blake Snyder. I actually see
- 11:22Speaker 3: him right here at PNW Golf Academy. And when freshman
- 11:25Speaker 3: year just got into it. I now see Austin NY's
- 11:29Speaker 3: great coach. And I'm still in contact with all my coaches.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Like that's something that's I'm so grateful for as all
- 11:36Speaker 3: these coaches that have helped me throughout. Even if you
- 11:38Speaker 3: don't work with them currently, they're still willing to give
- 11:41Speaker 3: you information to help you out along the way.
- 11:44Speaker 1: That's the voice of rosold High School senior Quinn Burwell
- 11:46Speaker 1: and before him, Roosevelt Junior Carson Church. They're here with
- 11:49Speaker 1: Rooseold High School golf coach Max Rose. Roosevelt High School
- 11:53Speaker 1: here and Seattle. Both of them have qualified for the
- 11:55Speaker 1: US Junior Amateur Championship. We're live on ninety three point
- 11:58Speaker 1: three KJRFM. You're going to golf for Santa Clara next year,
- 12:02Speaker 1: I am. And your roommate is from New Zealand.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Is that Craig Auckland, New Zealand?
- 12:06Speaker 1: And he's golfing in the in the Junior am.
- 12:09Speaker 3: He's trying to he's qualifying, I believe. Next week he's
- 12:12Speaker 3: playing in a really big the Western Junior, which is
- 12:15Speaker 3: a pretty big tournament in the Midwest right now. So
- 12:18Speaker 3: following the learboard, watching how he does.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And did Santa Clara. Is that a random draw of
- 12:23Speaker 1: roommates or Santa Clara Golf made sure you guys are roommate.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yeah, so there's only nine guys on a D one
- 12:29Speaker 3: team and two. Yeah, we only have two fresh incoming
- 12:33Speaker 3: freshmen myself and then Ryan g from New Zealand. So
- 12:37Speaker 3: just coach paired us up together.
- 12:40Speaker 1: So you might be playing the Junior Am.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Together, I'd hope. So I hope, So that'd be awesome.
- 12:45Speaker 1: And Carson that you want to play college golf? Are
- 12:48Speaker 1: you undecided on that or you?
- 12:50Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 12:50Speaker 1: I do want to play, Okay, any anything you're interested in,
- 12:53Speaker 1: schools and programs you're interested in particular.
- 12:55Speaker 5: I mean my dream school to play golf, as you dub.
- 12:59Speaker 5: And but right now I'm just looking around and trying
- 13:02Speaker 5: to find the right fit.
- 13:05Speaker 1: What is the college golf recruiting landscape like? We know?
- 13:09Speaker 1: And hear a lot about football and basketball and nil,
- 13:12Speaker 1: and what is the golf like? And I can't even
- 13:16Speaker 1: I don't know how that all affects the golf.
- 13:19Speaker 5: Well a recent thing Quinn and Rose could probably talk
- 13:22Speaker 5: about this, but like, because of NIL, the roster spots
- 13:27Speaker 5: on D one golf teams went from I think it
- 13:30Speaker 5: was twelve or eleven down to nine, and so it's
- 13:34Speaker 5: made it much harder in this landscape to get recruited
- 13:37Speaker 5: and go D one. And but I think it's just yeah,
- 13:40Speaker 5: it's cool if you all want to expand on that.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Yeah. So the NCAA changed their Division one and I
- 13:45Speaker 3: believe Division two rules about roster limits. So it used
- 13:48Speaker 3: to be unlimited, but you could only give five scholarships
- 13:51Speaker 3: per team, and they changed it down to nine, which
- 13:55Speaker 3: some teams would have to cut. The SEC went down
- 13:57Speaker 3: to eight, which puts more scholarships available. However, there's a
- 14:04Speaker 3: lot less spots for Division one golfers now and that's
- 14:08Speaker 3: been a struggle for our class and it's going to
- 14:10Speaker 3: get passed on to Carson because coaches have been scrambling
- 14:14Speaker 3: last minute trying to meet these new roster standards.
- 14:17Speaker 1: And there are they filling in with transfers and wide
- 14:20Speaker 1: open transfer portal just like other sports.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Yeah, because there are less spots, a coach is more
- 14:25Speaker 3: preferable to take a transfer that they know can play
- 14:28Speaker 3: well and handle the pressures and distractions of collegiate golf.
- 14:32Speaker 3: So I definitely think the transfer portal has increased like
- 14:36Speaker 3: all the other D one sports increased.
- 14:39Speaker 1: With golf, coach ros, how do you handle that part
- 14:43Speaker 1: of it for Roosevelt High school golfer who wants to
- 14:46Speaker 1: be in college?
- 14:47Speaker 4: For me, I'm trying to talk to coaches that show
- 14:50Speaker 4: up to the big tournaments. Like for Carson, we were
- 14:53Speaker 4: talking with the Seattle You coach together for a couple
- 14:56Speaker 4: holes and he just kind of fills me in on
- 14:58Speaker 4: what he's looking at. He loves local guys too, and
- 15:03Speaker 4: you know, I just tell these guys, you gotta spam everybody.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Just don't give up. Just keep sending emails. And that's
- 15:10Speaker 4: just what I've been told by other coaches, what they
- 15:13Speaker 4: have their kids do is just you got to be
- 15:15Speaker 4: that nagging person and try to get a response from somebody.
- 15:20Speaker 4: And with the spots going down, a lot of the
- 15:23Speaker 4: D one players that were D one are now getting
- 15:26Speaker 4: cut from those rosters, and then that they're trickling down
- 15:28Speaker 4: into you know, the smaller schools, D two schools, D
- 15:31Speaker 4: three schools. So there's a lot of really good golfers
- 15:34Speaker 4: out playing all different levels of college sports, college golf.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Quinn, for those golfers out there listening, maybe youth golfers,
- 15:42Speaker 1: they're out of high school schools out now for most schools.
- 15:45Speaker 1: You made it. You got a scholarship, a coveted scholarship
- 15:47Speaker 1: to Santa Clair Division one. How'd you do it? Did
- 15:49Speaker 1: you pester them with emails. Do you send your scores?
- 15:51Speaker 1: Do you send videos? What succeeded for you? What way?
- 15:54Speaker 3: Yeah, so you typically you send out emails with kind
- 15:58Speaker 3: of your golf score and you're ranking and just recent
- 16:03Speaker 3: tournament highlights and I added swing videos and yeah, you
- 16:08Speaker 3: just got to pass around them, like Roe said, you
- 16:10Speaker 3: gotta just keep emailing them. And originally Santa Clara coach
- 16:13Speaker 3: was like kind of unsure, like all these coaches they
- 16:19Speaker 3: might not see you in person, they might have like
- 16:22Speaker 3: a pre like just a judgment of like the Santa
- 16:26Speaker 3: Clair coach thought I was a very small person, which
- 16:29Speaker 3: and then he saw me in person, was like, oh
- 16:31Speaker 3: You're not small, And that, I guess turned the corner
- 16:34Speaker 3: on my recruiting process. So there's a lot of factors
- 16:36Speaker 3: that are out of your control. But just emailing them,
- 16:39Speaker 3: even calling them, not many players call and just picking
- 16:42Speaker 3: up the phone calling a coach, hey, coach, and they
- 16:46Speaker 3: don't get many. They get twenty five, maybe hundreds of
- 16:49Speaker 3: emails per day, they don't get calls. So I would
- 16:51Speaker 3: say calling coaches is the biggest key.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I'm stomping my foot in the studio here, I tell
- 16:56Speaker 1: my graduate students of the University Washington the same thing.
- 16:58Speaker 1: You want to stand out. They're gonna get hundreds and
- 17:01Speaker 1: thousands of emails, but they only get a one or
- 17:03Speaker 1: two calls, and they'll always remember the one who called.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Because no one no one's thirty and below use the
- 17:07Speaker 1: phone anymore other than the text and to watch videos.
- 17:10Speaker 1: No one calls. It worked. Yeah, do you guys have
- 17:13Speaker 1: a chance to stick around beyond the break or do
- 17:15Speaker 1: you gotta get back for like you gotta go to sleep.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Probably I'm good.
- 17:19Speaker 5: Yeah, we can stick around.
- 17:20Speaker 1: All right. We'll talk a little bit more with two
- 17:22Speaker 1: of Roosevelt High School's golfers that are in the US
- 17:25Speaker 1: Junior Amateur Championships and their coach, Max Rose. Coming up
- 17:29Speaker 1: on ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back, Greg Belt,
- 17:41Speaker 1: Christopher Kid live with you on ninety three point three KJRFM,
- 17:44Speaker 1: and in front of me we have Roosevelt High School
- 17:46Speaker 1: senior Quinn Burwell and Roosevelt junior Carson Church with their
- 17:50Speaker 1: coach Max Rose, the golfers that are going to the
- 17:53Speaker 1: US Junior Amateur Championship in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. At the end
- 17:56Speaker 1: of July, only two hundred and sixty four dudes in
- 17:59Speaker 1: the entire our world get to go into this tournament,
- 18:01Speaker 1: and two of them are golfing at Roosevelt High School
- 18:03Speaker 1: in Seattle. That's pretty damn cool. That's why they're here today. Guys,
- 18:07Speaker 1: we left off talking about By the way, Quinn graduated
- 18:10Speaker 1: last night in the class of twenty twenty six. Graduation congratuations,
- 18:13Speaker 1: Thank you. He got in at six ten am, he
- 18:15Speaker 1: told us. So he's on minimal sleep after graduating last night,
- 18:19Speaker 1: after being in a trampoline park for most of the night,
- 18:24Speaker 1: so that he does more than just golf and go
- 18:26Speaker 1: to school.
- 18:27Speaker 4: I can I add some real of course, I was
- 18:28Speaker 4: listening to your intro on the way here and you
- 18:32Speaker 4: were talking about Coach Rose is probably trying to get
- 18:34Speaker 4: Quinn out of bed. I literally was. I had with
- 18:39Speaker 4: his parents. I had contacted both of these guys parents
- 18:41Speaker 4: because I was radio silence and it's like, you, guys,
- 18:44Speaker 4: we gotta go. And I don't know if your mom
- 18:48Speaker 4: mom came and woke you up. He's like, oh, we
- 18:50Speaker 4: gotta go.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Yeah, Like so here Rose's voice on the phone, get like,
- 18:54Speaker 3: is he up?
- 18:55Speaker 4: And my mom's So it was exactly as you described.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I have twenty three year old twins. I know that
- 19:01Speaker 1: twenty three they can't get them up. So when they
- 19:02Speaker 1: have jobs, now, when I can't get them up, Well,
- 19:05Speaker 1: you guys the mental side of golf. There are a
- 19:07Speaker 1: lot of listeners who play golf and know at least
- 19:11Speaker 1: have a familiarization with the mental sac The importance of
- 19:15Speaker 1: that in the importance of what you guys both told
- 19:18Speaker 1: me you do visualization and how that works.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Yeah, Visualization is trying to prepare your mind for the
- 19:28Speaker 3: emotions that you're gonna feel once you're at the course
- 19:31Speaker 3: and under pressure. So it's almost like you've already experienced
- 19:33Speaker 3: it and you already quote unquote programmed your mind into
- 19:38Speaker 3: what you want to do once you feel those emotions.
- 19:41Speaker 3: So it's almost like a calming, relaxing strategy for tournaments.
- 19:46Speaker 3: I do it like Carson and I would when we
- 19:49Speaker 3: had high school matches, because we're super competitive with each
- 19:52Speaker 3: other trying to get the lowest average. I we'd be
- 19:55Speaker 3: car pulling. I'd be like Carson, I visualized in fourth
- 19:58Speaker 3: period because it was so boring, and he would I
- 20:00Speaker 3: let every time be like, well, I visualize for forty
- 20:03Speaker 3: minutes in fifth period, Like yeah.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Not in my class, Carson, the mental side of it,
- 20:12Speaker 1: How important is it and how do you practice it well?
- 20:16Speaker 5: I have a mental coach. Quinn also has a mental coach,
- 20:18Speaker 5: same guy, And it's just like it's really helpful just
- 20:22Speaker 5: to give you a plan on how to like how
- 20:25Speaker 5: to play golf one shot at a time, because playing
- 20:27Speaker 5: golf one shot at a time is so important because
- 20:30Speaker 5: if you're thinking about the score, or if you're thinking
- 20:33Speaker 5: about the score or like the the next like what's
- 20:37Speaker 5: gonna happen if this or that, it's just all brain
- 20:39Speaker 5: clutter and you need to stay focused on each shot.
- 20:42Speaker 5: And by visualizing it, it really helps that and it
- 20:47Speaker 5: helps you execute that game plan so you're ready to
- 20:49Speaker 5: play golf one shot at a time and enjoy being
- 20:52Speaker 5: out there, not feel stressed because when you play tournament golf,
- 20:56Speaker 5: like this is important stuff to us, and you know,
- 21:00Speaker 5: it takes the edge off if we can visualize and
- 21:03Speaker 5: be ready and prepared for those for those moments.
- 21:07Speaker 1: What exercises does the mental coach give you, in particular,
- 21:11Speaker 1: what do you do when you're not golfing too?
- 21:14Speaker 3: So Bill Meyer, he was the coach at Seattle University
- 21:17Speaker 3: men's golf program and then the coach at you dubbed
- 21:20Speaker 3: for a little bit and awesome, awesome coach, even better person.
- 21:24Speaker 3: He's been just an overall mentor in me and too.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Carson here, the mental side of sports is simple, like
- 21:32Speaker 3: at the end of the day, you just want to
- 21:34Speaker 3: be fully focused on what you want to achieve, but
- 21:36Speaker 3: it is extremely difficult to execute despite its simplicity, and
- 21:42Speaker 3: so like the tools, journaling, I mean, just time management
- 21:45Speaker 3: is just I mean being very deliberate about what you're doing.
- 21:49Speaker 3: I mean, that's when you want you want all your
- 21:51Speaker 3: I mean he said, he has a classic saying where
- 21:53Speaker 3: your tension goes, energy flows. You want all your energy
- 21:56Speaker 3: going into what shot you want to hit. And the
- 21:59Speaker 3: more distraction you have, the like higher probability you are
- 22:03Speaker 3: to miss it right or miss it left. And yeah,
- 22:07Speaker 3: like journaling, I do a lot of journaling, Carson, we
- 22:10Speaker 3: both do visualization, and then just developing a process, like
- 22:15Speaker 3: you'll hear from all the pros and Carson and I
- 22:17Speaker 3: talk about it all the time. Just developing a process
- 22:20Speaker 3: and sticking to it on every shot. Trying to get
- 22:22Speaker 3: a mental routine, not only like a physical routine is important,
- 22:26Speaker 3: but the mental routine is almost more important. Yeah, just
- 22:30Speaker 3: keep it consistent.
- 22:31Speaker 5: That process is such an important part of golf because
- 22:35Speaker 5: like that process is so important in golf because you
- 22:39Speaker 5: have a strategy. Because if you have a set process
- 22:42Speaker 5: that you have practiced day in and day out, any
- 22:44Speaker 5: situation you're put in after a bad shot, after a
- 22:47Speaker 5: good shot, if there's a lot of pressure on the line,
- 22:50Speaker 5: you're able to go right back to that process and
- 22:52Speaker 5: it makes the game so much, It makes it much
- 22:55Speaker 5: easier to succeed.
- 22:57Speaker 1: You're gonna have Quinn, You're gonna or a Carson, You're
- 23:00Speaker 1: going to have perhaps have your brother on the bag
- 23:02Speaker 1: in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the UK.
- 23:04Speaker 5: I mean, we'll see. I haven't. I haven't completely told
- 23:08Speaker 5: him that that's where I'm going to go. So you know,
- 23:11Speaker 5: if he's listening right now, you know, Calin, I hope
- 23:15Speaker 5: maybe you can be on the bag if Lane's not
- 23:18Speaker 5: going to do it.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Younger brother, who's going to be a freshman at Roosevelt.
- 23:22Speaker 5: Yeah, he's been really into golf recently and he caddied
- 23:25Speaker 5: for me in one of our high school tournaments, which
- 23:26Speaker 5: was really fun.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Coach Max Rose, do you feel like a proud father
- 23:30Speaker 1: of these golfers. What's you're feeling going?
- 23:33Speaker 4: I do, I do. I've had so many great golfers
- 23:36Speaker 4: over the last ten years, and you know, I try
- 23:38Speaker 4: to keep up with them. They're all doing cool things
- 23:41Speaker 4: now out in the world. But to have these guys
- 23:43Speaker 4: kind of taking a really big level jump, like they're
- 23:47Speaker 4: playing in some really big tournaments and winning tournaments and
- 23:51Speaker 4: get invited to these big tournaments, it's really cool. I love,
- 23:55Speaker 4: you know, I'm very proud of, you know, the Roosevelt team,
- 23:57Speaker 4: and I'm an alumni of Roosevelt and I've been teaching
- 24:00Speaker 4: there for a while.
- 24:01Speaker 1: My rough, my.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Wife's an alum, My kids are going to be both
- 24:05Speaker 4: at the school next year. And just uh being having
- 24:10Speaker 4: these guys represent our school and the team and the
- 24:13Speaker 4: team culture that I've tried to build over the last
- 24:15Speaker 4: ten years. I mean, it just shows that everything's working
- 24:18Speaker 4: and these guys are super motivated, and if I had
- 24:23Speaker 4: any part in keeping them motivated, I'm happy for them.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Good for you, Sir Quentin Carson. You inform me during
- 24:29Speaker 1: the break that the winner of the US Junior and
- 24:31Speaker 1: gets a birth in next year's US Open, the Big
- 24:34Speaker 1: Boys US Open, that they're just teed off at Shinnakar
- 24:37Speaker 1: Kills today. You visualize, you do visual Have you thought
- 24:40Speaker 1: of that?
- 24:41Speaker 5: No, I mean I have, as it been like like,
- 24:47Speaker 5: I mean, it's part of it, i'd say. I mean,
- 24:49Speaker 5: if you if we want to go there and have
- 24:51Speaker 5: a good and have a good US junior, you want
- 24:54Speaker 5: to envision yourself at the peak, And I mean I
- 24:57Speaker 5: have visualized myself a little bit winning it. Do I
- 25:00Speaker 5: think that's exactly what's gonna happen? Probably not, but you
- 25:03Speaker 5: got it. You gotta believe. You have to believe, I
- 25:06Speaker 5: mean Tiger Woods believe the guys that win it. Ever
- 25:08Speaker 5: your belief they are gonna win it going into it,
- 25:10Speaker 5: so gotta believe.
- 25:12Speaker 1: That is really cool. Carson Church and Quinn Burwell, all
- 25:18Speaker 1: the best to you. Congratulations and all the best to
- 25:20Speaker 1: you next month. All the best of you in college,
- 25:22Speaker 1: all the best of you the rest of your high
- 25:23Speaker 1: school career. Carson, and You're impressive. It's impressive that youth are.
- 25:29Speaker 1: You're in tune to the mental side of gain the visual.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Thank you, all the best of you and best luck.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Thanks for coming down after graduation.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Man, Thank you, Quinn Well, thanks for having me.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Thank you very much. Next, Ian forness. He's a golfer
- 25:43Speaker 1: man more than I am. I tried to get him
- 25:45Speaker 1: to have a couple of questions here. He didn't want
- 25:46Speaker 1: anything to do with it. The mayor of Paple Valley
- 25:48Speaker 1: next to tell us what's on his show on ninety
- 25:50Speaker 1: three point three kJ RFM. Welcome the Greg Bellt Show.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Christopher Kidd, I'm a ninety three point three kJ r FM.
- 26:04Speaker 1: That was cool. That was to hear youth that, you know,
- 26:08Speaker 1: we think kids just sit around and play video games
- 26:10Speaker 1: all the time, they actually do more than that. And
- 26:12Speaker 1: to hear especially Carson talk about the visualization and how
- 26:16Speaker 1: important that is in golf and in sports really and
- 26:19Speaker 1: in life really, but in sports and in that sport
- 26:22Speaker 1: in particular, how important visualization is. And it was cold
- 26:26Speaker 1: at the junior Carson Quinn's like, I said, have you
- 26:30Speaker 1: visualized winning the US Open and or getting to go
- 26:33Speaker 1: to the US Open by winning this junior am And
- 26:35Speaker 1: He's like, ah, yeah, I don't think And Carson's like,
- 26:37Speaker 1: hell yeah, I visualized that. I thought that was pretty
- 26:41Speaker 1: cool when in this and getting to go to the
- 26:44Speaker 1: US one. But again, if you miss that, go to
- 26:46Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app nine through three KJR or our website
- 26:49Speaker 1: nine through three KGr dot com, and you can hear
- 26:52Speaker 1: high school golf at its finest in the country and
- 26:55Speaker 1: in the world, right here in our backyard in Roosevelt
- 26:58Speaker 1: High School in Seattle. Thanks to you on the text
- 26:59Speaker 1: line didn't get to it today, but a lot of
- 27:01Speaker 1: you saying how much you appreciate hearing what those guys
- 27:03Speaker 1: are doing and how they golf and the visualization everything.
- 27:06Speaker 1: So I appreciate the feedback on the text line, Hello, Hello,
- 27:09Speaker 1: how are you. I'm well, Sarah, Thank you. Do you
- 27:13Speaker 1: visualize when you golf?
- 27:14Speaker 3: Oh?
- 27:14Speaker 6: Yeah, didn't go well last night. I visualized some really
- 27:17Speaker 6: bad shots and a lot of them. I didn't lose
- 27:24Speaker 6: a beer. That was the only good thing. But that's
- 27:27Speaker 6: it's the only positive I took out of last night.
- 27:29Speaker 6: But yeah, no, it's I mean, it's that is. It
- 27:31Speaker 6: is a sport where you do that like you have to.
- 27:33Speaker 6: It doesn't matter if you're a hack like me or
- 27:35Speaker 6: really good players like those guys. You that's you stand
- 27:39Speaker 6: on a t box or you stand over a ball
- 27:41Speaker 6: on an approach shot or a pot even and you're like, okay,
- 27:43Speaker 6: what's what's it going to do. What am I going
- 27:45Speaker 6: to do?
- 27:45Speaker 4: And all that.
- 27:46Speaker 6: It's the thing is that some are really good and
- 27:49Speaker 6: they can do that. Others like me just you can
- 27:51Speaker 6: visualize all you want. Sometimes you visualize bad things happening,
- 27:54Speaker 6: and they do. But I'm sure for those guys it's
- 27:57Speaker 6: it's pretty uh, it's pretty important part of their game.
- 28:00Speaker 1: You're dressed up, You're like in TV mode. You get
- 28:02Speaker 1: cracking stuff today.
- 28:03Speaker 6: I had to do some stuff today.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought you. Yeah, no, no, just.
- 28:07Speaker 6: Coming from there, so yeah, not really dressed up little
- 28:10Speaker 6: quarters yet.
- 28:11Speaker 1: But yeah, that's and no baseball caps.
- 28:13Speaker 6: No, yeah, that was the running joke. Even your predecessor.
- 28:16Speaker 6: It was Ian doesn't have a baseball hat on. He
- 28:19Speaker 6: shaved hair is done. You must be doing TV today?
- 28:23Speaker 1: And the answer is yes, why I didn't mean to
- 28:26Speaker 1: apply that you No, I'm not.
- 28:28Speaker 6: I freely admit that. I freely It's it's like when
- 28:33Speaker 6: they put this thing on YouTube, I'm like, what are
- 28:34Speaker 6: we doing here? Man?
- 28:35Speaker 1: Like I do radio? Like I want to do radio.
- 28:38Speaker 6: I don't want to be on a camera.
- 28:39Speaker 4: I'm on a camra.
- 28:40Speaker 6: First of all, I'm on a camera far too much
- 28:42Speaker 6: for most people's liking. As it is, and so I
- 28:44Speaker 6: don't need to be on a camera now, but yeah,
- 28:46Speaker 6: I know it's uh, it's yeah, I had to go
- 28:48Speaker 6: buy some gel I was like almost out. Haven't haven't
- 28:52Speaker 6: replenished the fly since the hockey season ended.
- 28:54Speaker 1: So yeah, uh, how concerned are you to see your
- 28:58Speaker 1: all star, this town's three time All star centerfielder pulling
- 29:01Speaker 1: up in the middle of a game.
- 29:02Speaker 6: I it just kind of feels like par for the course. Yeah,
- 29:05Speaker 6: it's it's I'm just I think I'll probably be more
- 29:08Speaker 6: surprised if somebody doesn't get hurt or sick or whatever
- 29:10Speaker 6: right in a game, because that's the way they are
- 29:12Speaker 6: right now. It's you know, they treat those guys rightfully,
- 29:15Speaker 6: so with with kid gloves like I mean, I think
- 29:17Speaker 6: it's one of those It sounds like it's one of
- 29:19Speaker 6: those injuries since he getting the day off, right, But
- 29:22Speaker 6: it sounds like it's one of those injuries that if
- 29:24Speaker 6: it was another sport and you're playing only seventeen games
- 29:27Speaker 6: for example, or eighty two games for example, you're probably
- 29:30Speaker 6: playing they play one sixty two whatever Thursday afternoon after
- 29:34Speaker 6: night game.
- 29:35Speaker 1: You take your time.
- 29:36Speaker 6: Get well, And I mean, he's too important to this
- 29:38Speaker 6: baseball team to risk anything.
- 29:40Speaker 1: So I think give him ten days off, put him
- 29:42Speaker 1: on the injured list, as I mean, it's only June
- 29:44Speaker 1: and they're still in first place.
- 29:45Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I think if it's one of those things.
- 29:47Speaker 6: So Naylor's back today. But and that one made sense
- 29:52Speaker 6: because he just he follow the pitch off his shint.
- 29:54Speaker 6: He's probably sore. What have you.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I haven't seen what the deal is on Luke Raley.
- 29:58Speaker 1: And he was sick, he said, and he should be
- 30:00Speaker 1: back there. Yeah, he just got he would have been back.
- 30:02Speaker 1: He's got the flu. Yeah, so oh, he flew on
- 30:05Speaker 1: top of injury. Flew on top of the injury.
- 30:06Speaker 4: But the.
- 30:09Speaker 6: You know, I think the cal Rawley thing was a
- 30:11Speaker 6: cautionary tale in this sense, absolutely, like you screw around
- 30:15Speaker 6: with it for weeks and finally you had to put
- 30:17Speaker 6: him on the injury list. And so he ends up
- 30:20Speaker 6: not only struggling for a few weeks leading into that,
- 30:22Speaker 6: I mean the whole season, but really probably the couple
- 30:24Speaker 6: weeks leading into it. Then you're out for almost what
- 30:27Speaker 6: is it.
- 30:28Speaker 1: He was out for a month? Thirty three days.
- 30:29Speaker 6: Yeah, he's out for a month. Yeah, sometimes maybe earlier
- 30:34Speaker 6: on a on an injured list is better. But I mean,
- 30:38Speaker 6: I guess you have to I'm gonna say this with
- 30:40Speaker 6: I'm not even saying this tongue in cheek, but I
- 30:42Speaker 6: guess you got to trust the medical staff. I know
- 30:44Speaker 6: there's a lot of people that don't with this baseball team.
- 30:46Speaker 6: I think that's one of the one criticisms people have
- 30:48Speaker 6: had with it that's probably legit, like what are we doing?
- 30:53Speaker 3: So I don't know.
- 30:54Speaker 1: We'll see what do you have today.
- 30:57Speaker 6: Ryan Leaf is going to join us in twelve twenty,
- 30:59Speaker 6: who was just a pointed the lead analyst USA Network
- 31:02Speaker 6: for the new PAC twelve on TV. So we haven't
- 31:06Speaker 6: I have, man, I'll tell you I unctual the last
- 31:08Speaker 6: time I talked to Ryan. It's been a long time.
- 31:10Speaker 6: I'll just say that. So I'm looking forward to that.
- 31:12Speaker 6: Talking to run at fell twenty. You know, Sarah's our
- 31:14Speaker 6: baseball guy. We'll talk to him at one twenty last
- 31:16Speaker 6: about the piggyback, piggyback, piggyback. He's kind of got a
- 31:21Speaker 6: he's he's kind of not just our baseball nerd numbers guy,
- 31:24Speaker 6: but he's really into the mechanics, the metrics, the dynamics
- 31:29Speaker 6: of pitching and so we'll kind of lean heavy into
- 31:32Speaker 6: him about what they're doing, like worst Taylor twelve and
- 31:36Speaker 6: what are you doing? What are we doing? So we'll
- 31:41Speaker 6: get to him and then Daniel O'Neil. Since we're off
- 31:43Speaker 6: tomorrow for the World Cup. Daniel O'Neil's normally Friday, he's
- 31:45Speaker 6: gonna join us two o'clock today.
- 31:47Speaker 1: That's the US and Australia World Cup matches tomorrow, right.
- 31:50Speaker 4: I have heard that.
- 31:51Speaker 6: Okay, I'm just confirming Chris, and he said I don't know, yes,
- 31:55Speaker 6: he would. Chris has like shaked his hands out.
- 31:57Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 31:58Speaker 6: NBA drafts next week, a combine start. I said, Chris,
- 32:04Speaker 6: when is the World Cup game? He goes, I'm telling you, yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 6: I think Washington's got the number one pick. I said, no, buddy,
- 32:11Speaker 6: I'm asking you when the World Cup game is? And see,
- 32:13Speaker 6: kid two six is just like looking at me like
- 32:15Speaker 6: I had two heads. It's a soccer match, sir. When
- 32:19Speaker 6: is that?
- 32:20Speaker 1: He's not exaggerating. That's pretty accurate. But well, I liked
- 32:23Speaker 1: your question. Chris.
- 32:24Speaker 6: You got no, I go we'll talk about it off
- 32:26Speaker 6: the air. That's a no, by the way, just say no. Listen,
- 32:32Speaker 6: just here's the deal. You just say no and just
- 32:35Speaker 6: go do the morning show with Chuck. You anti soccer guys,
- 32:38Speaker 6: you soccer haters, you and Chuck and hang out together
- 32:41Speaker 6: in the morning. He does not, he's not into it.
