Transcript
- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, folks.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the episode of Film Study.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: This is Ken Decus, a good time for our match-up show on the offense.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: Looking forward to this week for Game Against the Titans, as always.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: I do this show with my friend and co-host Frazier to far friend.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: Frazier, how are you doing?
- 0:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you can.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: Got to do that.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: Go on for the off of the show.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: Had a good defensive show, talking about how the Ravens can.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_01]: really contain the Titans offense by forcing camp office spot and really forcing him to make some tight win-note throws and then also how the past rush can help the secondary make it easier for them to cover under some better circumstances.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: I look forward to a big game from not a debate at BK who should get to face a third string record.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: It might even be Garrett Delinger, the X-raven.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: It could be Antonio Mothi, who has been around the leaf for a while, and it could even be Pat Cougan, a rookie center from Indiana, and formally, before that from Notre Dame.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: a lot of good possibilities for Matt at BK to have a big day after he played a lot of snaps and played reasonably well, I thought against Dallas, but this is an opportunity to have a real break out game maybe get his first sack in a couple of years.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll start off this first one.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, for the offense, I have the Ravens misdirection versus the Titans inside linebackers.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll type for set this up a little bit.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: The Titans play a four three defense.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_00]: They have three off-bow linebackers.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: Their off-bow linebacker group, I would say, is probably the best unit on the defense.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_00]: They're front for their interior guys are good, but their off-bow linebackers are outstanding.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: They have Cody Barton.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: And, um,
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: The rookie Anthony Hill is the other centerpiece and they have a green dot where her who his name is escaping me right now and I didn't write it down in my notes here which is really bad.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: But let's just continue to talk about this.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: The ravens need to reintroduce misdirection into this offense.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: They did without it for a lot of the Dallas games and most notably they did without it in some key short yard of situations.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'll let Frazier talk more about that because I know he's got more on that.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: But the two major elements are play action from under center and the read option.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: So the read option, they hardly use it all against Downs and it would have been a great great weapon.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: Any time, you know, you've got the running back inside car, it's a good option to have Lamar make a front facing read of the field, which could be a read for a pass, or it could be a read for the run.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: And those are both valuable options, the rigs need to maintain those options and exercise them only when they know they've got a big play to pull out of that.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: The other component we didn't see nearly as much of as we saw against a cult say was any of the boot action where they would set up zone blocking in one direction.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: favorite zone read, you know, opportunities, or you've got no more jacks and booting out into open space with the possibility from there of both run or past still.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: So, misdirection is the fuel for the Ravens offense, the Titans inside linebackers are good, but they're also guys that you can beat with misdirection.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: You can make them make them a stake.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: and beyond that they can some of them including Cody Barton in particular is not the greatest guy in terms of moving sideline to sideline.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: He's more of a straight ahead bumper.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: So he's a guy you could definitely take advantage of if you get Lamar outside the framework of the pocket.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I think this is a great opportunity to reintroduce misdirection, give the rave of some confidence that the misdirection game is still there and it's still good after frankly a very tough week for it
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I really believe that I think the Ravens, especially Derek Henry is someone who excels at the cat and mouse game against the linebackers trying to make them pick the wrong hole in terms of their fill and then hit the other hole on the backside.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: I would like to see the Ravens get some of that
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: horizontal run action going that they used to do with JK and Keaton.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if we have that speed available anymore, but coming out of the side card going right across Lamar and then trying to stretch the defense going that way.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: We don't have that threat other than Lamar right now and I think that's a key point of the element of the offense that we need in terms of the run game because we could do that with the screens.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: and some of the short passing, but it's had the run game be able to stretch the defense vertically and horizontally that way is something I look for.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: So I think in terms of the misdirection, I would love to see more of Henry
- 4:58[SPEAKER_01]: in that Wildcat, he was able to, again, with the Captain Mouse game on the gold line, forcing that linebacker to fill the wrong gap and then just cutting it back and then being able to muscle through for the touchdown.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: So I really definitely agree with that.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: I got a response to that.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: I completely do not want the Wildcat.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: I want the ball in Lamar's hands as the first guy to touch the football after the center on every single Raven's play.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: taking out all the misdirection out of your offense.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Henry may be decent at picking a hole under such circumstances, but if the defense is compressed for example, he's playing with big disadvantage under that.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: I know he did score a four-year touchdown, which was great.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: If the ball is in the Mars hands, you always have at least two plays available to you.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: You might have three.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: And that's my problem basically with getting away from the misdirection on the short yardage plays on the, there on fourth down.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, fair.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: And then moving on to my next point in terms of short yardage.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: I have the Ravens short yardage offense versus the Titans packed off a defensive line and defensive boxes.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: Last week was a disappointment in terms of short yardage situation.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: Ravens were unsuccessful and handful of foretdown attempts and could have been a negative aspect of the game of the offense wasn't able to clutch up at then there.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: really looking for a Henry to make better decisions in those situations tough to criticize him because he's someone that is an all-time great but on one foot down specifically it looks like he just ran
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: straight into the back of the line, then you have a cutback opportunity to the right side.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of saw what he probably was thinking.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: Smite did get blown up on that play.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was a deander whoever it was, but still if I'm hindering, I'm going to take a chance and see if I can fall forward for a first-down rather than just
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: almost submitting that I have to get behind this line.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: And so really looking to him to make better decisions.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: And then really looking for the offensive line to see if they can build on top of those last couple of drives that have the end of the game.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: Ironically, this offensive line set up with Iwane as the center could build well in the power run game.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: He's someone who's a huge force in the middle, so trying to get those man to man run combinations on the zone block inside zones, blocking the scheme and the duo combinations could build well for the offense, especially in the run game.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm curious to see who they put
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: Because worries did play pretty well.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: I would think for the time you was in there, but I think I just want to continue that theme of size with Simpson, I want to and probably someone relatively to same size next to him, because it really does help for the offensive line to really lean on the defense and that aspect.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: All right, first of all, good stuff.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to leave some of this for the next element.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: But I will say the one thing you mentioned there I want to add to is the about the compressed defenses.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: And the Ravens have just not had obvious answers in short yardage in dealing with this.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's a problem that goes beyond short yardage.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: It goes on to a lot of passing situations where Lamar is shown a zero bliss.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: And we've seen Luana Rumo and Flora's last year to get some Vikings and whatnot.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: Have been guys have really gone after Lamar with that.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that we would expect to see that at some point this year where they crowd the box and force Lamar to prove that he has an answer to a compressed
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: formation.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: One of the weaknesses of Lamar in the past has been that he's tried to bring in receivers and tight ends who are split to try on a pre-snap-based, to try and fix it.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: We can't do that.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: You're always a man's short, so Lamar really has to work on spreading the formation out more into those circumstances and figuring out how to get somebody outside the frame of that compressed defense and get a move down, feel it, get some very big
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: Last year in the 24th, I think, when ever Cincinnati did two of those, and that basically shut in on Rumo down, in terms of trying to crowd the line of scrimmage.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: That's a little take, pretty much against any opponent, and then once it's out there on film, hopefully Lamar doesn't face it too much.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think it is a way that defenses go out and hunt for the variants they need to get Lamar Jackson off the field.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: So that's it.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, I'm not going to cut you off.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think the way I want the Ravens to beat the blitz is the way they were beating the blitz and Pittsburgh and the last year when they were burning was a flowers and a tes walker.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think When Jacoby Lane does come back.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think on those zero safety looks where it's all outlets.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: I think you just the more it has to
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: have these combinations with the receivers.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: These he probably has hand signs with Zay that if they're on the same page, they can run this route and break off and do something else.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think he has to have just give it to Lane.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if there's a hesitation there.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I'm just too optimistic, but when he comes back, he's someone that needs to be a focal point.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: And the downfield passing game, him and Tess Walker, as we saw last week with a couple of the plays that he had.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we'll take a break and we'll come back with more on the matchup show.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're back.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: Frazier's Park, Canada, music here.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: Going to a second matchups for being a third one of the show here, the Ravens offensive line versus the Titans front is one of the big ones in this game.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: And Jeffrey Simmons, obviously, is the game record on their side of the line.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: They also have Franklin Myers in there as well.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: And these are guys that it will be more difficult for the Ravens to morph to their own plan.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_00]: As the game moves on, they can do guys who run themselves out of plays, that's certainly the case.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: The Simmons very talented player.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's probably will be Andrew Voorhees at right guard and he needs to find a way to deal with Simmons.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think that you want to move to center actually provides the Ravens with an opportunity to be
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: this kind of line they need to be against the past rush that will be very big within the AFC North, a lot of interior defenders count a bit and and Cam Hayward and Dexter Lawrence and BJ Hill
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: and the Browns guys, Malik Collins, and Mason Graham are enormous players, and they present incredible challenges to the Ravens front as originally constituted with a smaller center.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the Ravens have an opportunity to either go out and find a guard that might fit the bill, or probe at the value of both Voorhees and Jones to figure out who's the guy who can
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: The fact that we've seen Voorhees is the first up at right guard, does not speak well to Joe's current situation with the coaches, but they need to somehow find a way through a combination of the misdirection we talked earlier and some ability to be offensive, lying to either play duo or zone block effectively to create level two first contact opportunities for Henry that he hopefully can turn into some good runs.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, and just let's touch on Jones.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not too sure if he's bought in into the organization in terms of trying to
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: From what I've seen on film in terms of Emory Jones, he's like a half step late in terms of some of his reads, trying to get to the second level, trying to get to the block last year, a lot of the time, his Henry was pushing him forward to try and get out in space.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: But like you said, it does speak volumes that boardies was first up.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: After they pretty much demoted him,
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: and gave him a pay cut in terms of bringing Simpson on.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: So, very interesting to see that move was a Jones or right guard coming in.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: Right guard right tackle in school that I'll see you mostly right tackle.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: And the thought was always that he would move inside.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: And the thought that was that his length and size would make him an ideal right guard because he has the the good length for first contact to
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: work the defensive tackle on that side and open the front gate for a right-headed run game.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: So from that perspective in a lot of ways he made sense, and by the way he's pre-seasoned work, he played some on the left on the right, there's enormous difference.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: He was terrible on the left side.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, a terrible is a passblocker in particular, and on the right side he played quite well.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: And so that day and night differentiation, I thought would carry over into him getting a shot at that right guard position before
- 14:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I've uh, curious to see how the chips do fall off.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: Not going with the offensive line, just need to shake up a little more moving forward.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I'm really interested to see what their game plan is for Jeffrey Simmons.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: They're probably going to attack, uh,
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: Simpson and more he's I think if they try to attack you want to hit up with Simpson it uh my Simmons it might not be the best idea because I think they will be able to double team in uh in that situation because they're not really looking to rookie on the island like that most of the time so I I really do want to see how the offense does
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: how are they going to approach polling the guards in terms of under their right hand run team so if they want to run power, they're going to try and pull the left guards at a right side, are they going to try to move that way or they want more he's and they might want to move to more of a left hand run team like we seen in the past.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they could do a combination of things, but one thing you could do is if you want to double-team Simmons and he's lining up at the three-tech over-right guard, let's say, and that could be a possibility.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: They could be looking for that matchup to get in on Voorhees.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: with those one-on-one matchups the way we're looking at nom they met a B.K.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.a.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: An unblocked edge or an edge who's blocked by a tight end who's not going to be disadvantaged on that and that's still okay if you run a read option play with the running back in the side-car right Okay, so you run Henry across Lamar's face from right to left and the then the right defensive end has to make a decision unblocked
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: whether he crashes down or he tries to track or more, and that's a way to really help take Jeffrey Simmons out of the game, actually.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: You think about that, taking the defensive end out of the game and making him make some bad reads, and that's certainly what Mammor's superpower is.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's obviously a ability to read opponent leverage, but the other thing it helps you do is you get double-team on Jeffrey Simmons because of it, and you can get real value out of that in the
- 16:55[SPEAKER_01]: Moving on to my next point, I have the Ravens on Schedule Passing versus the Titan Secondary.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's definitely a point that I've made a couple of weeks so far, but it's still something that I want to see them continue to work towards in terms of being the most efficient part of their offense.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: I saw a handful of throws from James Winston where
- 17:19[SPEAKER_01]: The window was very, very tight, but he still made the throw, and it was a contested contested catches by the receivers.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: So like we've mentioned on the show before the Mar has a tendency to wait for the receivers to be open, to throw the ball.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: I really want to see a continued emphasis on the on-scription passing.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: Zay Flowers, when he's in the game, I mean, it's night and day for the offense.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's completely different.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's good thing, obviously, because he's a very explosive player.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_01]: His 160 million hour price tag has been justified so far, but it's been underwhelming for people like Rashad Bateman who you would expect to pick up the pieces and that remark when
- 18:12[SPEAKER_01]: docile at that point, just nothing's running right.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone's just.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_01]: It seems to be smuddering without Jose Flowers on the field.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: So I really want to see more of Tez Walker involved on the deep passing.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think his conversations with Corey Smith has paid off in terms of him drawing those passenger parents down field.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he's not going to get the ball.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be the one that draws the PI.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_01]: So it's his ball or no one's ball really.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: But want to see them all really lay it out for him.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: under throw it, you have that PI capability, but just give them a shot.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think Taz is someone who can go run under the ball and for some reason the mark is he's someone who's anti-mistake prone, but I would love to see him really take more risk with Taz down the field.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_00]: So, I think he's willing to throw the ball for Tez down the field.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_00]: He's just not gut his arm and mind calibrated to hit the right spot with Tez.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: Tez is lightning quick and, you know, he's not only that, you know, Tez is doing a real good job taking multiple defenders out of the play.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: which is, you know, an under-appreciated value of Tess Walker, but he was double-teamed on both the deep balls, both the deep shots they took to.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_00]: And the first one is passing interference at the goal line, there are two defenders there, one on ran right through Tess Walker.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: The other one is on the left side line.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: Lamar missed that one, had a chance to go further up, field with the ball.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: And Tesla Walker would have easily outraced as defenders.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: It would have been a, might have been a touchdown, but definitely would have been a significantly bigger game.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: Well, significantly bigger game than in complete, but significantly bigger game, even then if you'd managed to come up with the ball on a contested basis, where it was thrown.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: But Walker is taking two defenders with him.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: Opposing defenses are respecting him.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: The cowboys had to, because they've got very limited personnel back there.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_00]: They don't have anybody who can run with them.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: And they, you know, they,
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: they have to be very careful on the back end.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: But other teams will do it too, and they will move with Walker.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_00]: Lamar just needs to lay the ball out, and I think the way to calibrate it and maybe they work on timing mechanics for doing this is to look about
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: just overthrow that defender by five yards, like figure out where the defender is going to go and overthrow him by five yards.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's where Tesla Walker's going to be.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_00]: And then we'll run right under the ball, but you know, he had 14 extra yards to work with.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's lucky to get a DPI on the play, but if you can't see an extra yard yard, so we're going to the back of the end zone.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's a ton of space for Walker to easily float right under that football and pick it up.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_00]: It is very much like
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: the as soon as he gets by the defender two things happen one is they get grabby on the spot and they'll try and they'll they'll try and defint some hold of some sort to get them slowed down and number two is when they're chasing to try and make up ground they ain't looking back to find that football
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they're actually, and that gives every possibility that they're going to run right through to as when the ball comes in.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: But that's so critical to the Raven's offense for those throws to start being on target.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, this is what happened all summer for Tess Walker.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_00]: The balls were under throw deep to him.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_00]: It really surprising to me that given the volume of throws, it's been by now and the Mars probably had
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know, eight, the throws he's had the Lamar and I'd say six of them.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: I started to test and I would say six of them have been under throne.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, that's, you should be at a point where that's enough trials to not be throwing gutter balls as often.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I also want to ask, what have you seen from payment on film in terms of what hasn't worked in him getting involved in offense?
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so I mean, first of all, I don't think it's been bad at all for Beatman the last two weeks in terms of his contributions to the offense.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_00]: You know, obviously the first week was not what you'd hope.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_00]: And then the second week, we had flowers out and Beatman really picked up the mail.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_00]: He delivered it in terms of having nine targets on the gate catches.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_00]: So no problem at all with that game.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: Baitman has terrific primary wiggle and secondary wiggle, so the primary route, he throws a good, good juke on the defender, and that's what makes him such a good separation player, but he has his secondary wiggle also outstanding.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: So as the season goes on and what's happened to the Ravens line, I think there's going to be, as much as we want to see the on schedule game improving, that comes up, one of
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, it's important.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's something you'd really like to see.
