Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are out of the gates on sport and state.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Glad you're with us for Hutton & Withrow presented by
- 0:04Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bet.
- 0:05Speaker 2: He's Withrow. I'm Hutton. Good morning to you. Good morning, Chad.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Good morning, Hut.
- 0:10Speaker 1: A lot to discuss today. We've got Thursday night football
- 0:12Speaker 1: coming up. We have one big thing on every NFL game.
- 0:14Speaker 1: There's now a coach who's been fired in the Power
- 0:18Speaker 1: 4 conferences. And we've got the overachieving and underachieving players
- 0:25Speaker 1: and rosters across college football. We start, though, with the
- 0:30Speaker 1: Tennessee Titans and Jordan Elliott. A lot came out over
- 0:35Speaker 1: the last 24, 48 hours about Elliott, who was a
- 0:39Speaker 1: defensive tackle for the Titans. He gets into a skirmish,
- 0:43Speaker 1: a fight, something of that nature with J.C. Latham in practice.
- 0:50Speaker 1: It carries over to the locker room. He goes out
- 0:52Speaker 1: to his vehicle in the team parking garage and has
- 0:55Speaker 1: a firearm. And John Franklin Myers goes out to make
- 1:01Speaker 1: sure he doesn't go any further with that. The team
- 1:04Speaker 1: released a statement on this. And, Chad, we thought this
- 1:08Speaker 1: is exactly what you're seeing here, is where it was
- 1:10Speaker 1: going to end. There was an incident on our team,
- 1:13Speaker 1: in our team facility, with Jordan Elliott. Following our review
- 1:15Speaker 1: of the incident, we've made the decision to release Elliott
- 1:18Speaker 1: from our roster. We will have no further comment on
- 1:21Speaker 1: the matter. Well, that doesn't end up being the case, right?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yesterday.
- 1:28Speaker 1: We heard from Robert Sala, and Chad, I was surprised,
- 1:32Speaker 1: quite frankly, with what we're about to see and hear.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Let's react to it after we hear from the head coach,
- 1:39Speaker 1: who goes in-depth about his feelings toward the Elliott incident.
- 1:44Speaker 3: With regards to the news that Jordan had a gun.
- 1:48Speaker 4: And the reason why I think NFL and the organization
- 1:52Speaker 4: did an outstanding job is because this is a man
- 1:54Speaker 4: who's a father, a great husband, he's never committed a
- 1:58Speaker 4: crime in his entire life, and he pulled a gun
- 2:03Speaker 4: in the parking lot. And the first question that I
- 2:06Speaker 4: think everyone forgets to ask is why would a great man,
- 2:10Speaker 4: a great father, A man who shows up on time
- 2:13Speaker 4: every day, works his ass off every day, contributes the
- 2:16Speaker 4: way he's supposed.
- 2:17Speaker 3: To contribute, is well-liked in the locker room. Why did
- 2:21Speaker 3: he go off the rails and grab a gun?
- 2:24Speaker 4: And to me, those are small signs of a cry
- 2:28Speaker 4: of help in terms of, obviously, there's something greater happening.
- 2:34Speaker 3: And I thought the team in the NFL did an outstanding.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Job with regards to pausing and asking those questions and
- 2:39Speaker 4: checking every single.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Box with regards to getting him the help that he needs.
- 2:44Speaker 4: In the last year, the NFL has lost two outstanding
- 2:46Speaker 4: young men to taking their own lives because they may
- 2:49Speaker 4: have had help. They may have been crying for help,
- 2:52Speaker 4: and everyone ignored it. And I'm not saying that's where
- 2:56Speaker 4: he was. I'm not going to speak on that. But
- 2:58Speaker 4: these kids go through a lot, a lot.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And... And like I said, I thought I will stand
- 3:06Speaker 3: on the table for Jordan's character.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Unfortunately, rules are rules with regards to guns on property.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And sometimes it's far greater than the knee-jerk reaction of
- 3:18Speaker 4: kicking somebody and kicking somebody when they're down. My message
- 3:22Speaker 4: to 31 other teams would be if you need a
- 3:23Speaker 4: hell of a run-stopping D-tackle that can help you on
- 3:25Speaker 4: a playoff run, give.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Me a call. I'll tell you everything you need to
- 3:28Speaker 3: know about him. He's a good man.
- 3:32Speaker 4: He had a terrible lapse in judgment that I recognize
- 3:36Speaker 4: as a call for help more than a criminal act.
- 3:40Speaker 3: And it's unfortunate the way it went down.
- 3:44Speaker 4: But as far as Jordan's concerned and the locker room
- 3:49Speaker 4: and all that, I think the locker room and Jordan,
- 3:53Speaker 4: I think people see it differently here than the knee-jerk
- 3:56Speaker 4: reaction of the world.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Chad, right there, I heard a head coach who, my
- 4:01Speaker 1: first reaction was, showed leadership, showed support, showed care. And
- 4:06Speaker 1: it wasn't my first question that I asked when I
- 4:09Speaker 1: heard about this that, oh, why? I asked, and I
- 4:13Speaker 1: was thinking, well, thank goodness it ended when it ended, right?
- 4:16Speaker 1: Like it didn't escalate any further than it already had.
- 4:20Speaker 2: To that point.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Then I started asking why and how it can get
- 4:23Speaker 1: to that point. Because we see things like this on
- 4:25Speaker 1: the practice field often, you know, during training camp, it
- 4:28Speaker 1: never gets to this point. I mean, when it does
- 4:31Speaker 1: get to this point, Salah has a point, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: that things behind the scenes can escalate to this. But
- 4:39Speaker 1: did you see the same thing? Did you hear the
- 4:40Speaker 1: same thing from Salah? I thought, I thought he handled
- 4:42Speaker 1: that as well as he possibly could. I, I, I
- 4:47Speaker 1: don't think what he said handled it as well as
- 4:49Speaker 1: he possibly could, and I'll get into that.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I think there's two parts of this, okay?
- 4:53Speaker 5: And I immediately saw that he spoke for two minutes,
- 4:56Speaker 5: and I posted on Twitter that I'm the first to
- 4:59Speaker 5: criticize the Titans for hiding behind written statements and not being.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Transparent and not saying anything.
- 5:05Speaker 5: So in turn, to be fair, I've got to be
- 5:07Speaker 5: fair to the organization and say I'm thrilled that Robert
- 5:11Speaker 5: Sala spoke at length about this.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I sent it to our group. And I said, well,
- 5:15Speaker 2: I was wrong.
- 5:15Speaker 1: He spoke way more about this than I was expecting,
- 5:19Speaker 1: way more than I was expecting for him to talk
- 5:21Speaker 1: about this incident when he got into mental health. And
- 5:24Speaker 1: we need to ask what's going on with him that
- 5:25Speaker 1: he would do this and all those things that he said.
- 5:28Speaker 1: So I give Robert Sala credit for being a leader
- 5:31Speaker 1: and not ducking the controversy and not ducking the issue
- 5:34Speaker 1: and talking about it from his heart about what was
- 5:37Speaker 1: going on and what he thought about and what the
- 5:40Speaker 1: organization thought about and everything else.
- 5:42Speaker 5: So I want to start there. Full marks to him
- 5:44Speaker 5: for being upfront and honest about everything. Now, when you
- 5:50Speaker 5: get into someone who may have murdered someone, had he
- 5:54Speaker 5: gone through with it, or harmed himself, and he starts
- 5:57Speaker 5: going into this, well, we got to ask what's going
- 5:59Speaker 5: on with him.
- 6:00Speaker 2: He's a great father. He's a great husband. He's a great.
- 6:03Speaker 5: That's a criminal act when you threaten someone with a gun.
- 6:07Speaker 5: You also can't get away from that part of it.
- 6:10Speaker 5: And also, it's not an NFL rule that they had
- 6:12Speaker 5: to cut him To my knowledge, he was going to
- 6:14Speaker 5: get suspended. Something was going to happen to him with
- 6:17Speaker 5: league discipline more than likely had they reported it to
- 6:20Speaker 5: the league. But he's vouching for him for 31 other teams.
- 6:23Speaker 5: And I'm thinking you could have him on your team
- 6:25Speaker 5: if you vouch for his character so much. If you
- 6:28Speaker 5: think this is a one off and he just needs
- 6:29Speaker 5: to go get help and could come back. I mean,
- 6:32Speaker 5: why vouch with 31 other coaches the way you're saying
- 6:35Speaker 5: for his character when you could have just kept him
- 6:37Speaker 5: on the team and had him get the help that
- 6:39Speaker 5: he got?
- 6:39Speaker 1: But instead, the Titans cut him. I don't think there's
- 6:42Speaker 1: a rule about cutting him. And again, I think they
- 6:44Speaker 1: did the right thing by cutting him. I'm not disagreeing
- 6:47Speaker 1: with them cutting him, but to cut the guy and
- 6:49Speaker 1: then to come back and talk about how great of
- 6:51Speaker 1: a professional he is and how great of a dad
- 6:53Speaker 1: he is and all of this, and we've got to
- 6:55Speaker 1: ask what's going on with his mental health and worry
- 6:58Speaker 1: about him.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Well, what about J.C. Latham?
- 7:00Speaker 1: And all this too would be my response. I think
- 7:03Speaker 1: that's why they cut him. I would also, I'd worry
- 7:05Speaker 1: about him also. Well, I, I think, um, in reviewing
- 7:09Speaker 1: this and listening to him, he said, Sala goes into the,
- 7:15Speaker 1: the self harm aspect of this. And he says, I
- 7:18Speaker 1: don't want to speak to that, but he, he did.
- 7:20Speaker 1: He mentioned two other players recently who have done this.
- 7:23Speaker 2: And I went there.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I thought that after reviewing this, maybe he was going
- 7:27Speaker 1: to harm himself. Um, Because he never entered the facility.
- 7:33Speaker 1: It stayed around his car or at his vehicle, based
- 7:37Speaker 1: on the review. And Franklin Myers came out to talk
- 7:42Speaker 1: him out of whatever he was doing, whether that was
- 7:45Speaker 1: entering the facility or not. And keep in mind, Sala
- 7:49Speaker 1: said in his statement he pulled a gun.
- 7:52Speaker 5: It's not just he walked to his car and threatened it.
- 7:54Speaker 5: He said, the guy pulled a gun. And I'm taking
- 7:57Speaker 5: him and.
- 7:57Speaker 2: His word for that. It has been reported that it
- 7:59Speaker 2: was at his car. Yeah. And it never went further
- 8:03Speaker 2: than that.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And that's through, I guess, the NFL review that's gone
- 8:07Speaker 1: out to an actual reporter.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I don't know. But he pulled a gun.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I mean, I took it immediately as he threatened to
- 8:14Speaker 1: pull a gun, walked to his car. John Franklin Myers
- 8:16Speaker 1: walked with him, talked him out of it.
- 8:17Speaker 2: He didn't pull a gun. I think he had a gun, yes.
- 8:21Speaker 1: He had a firearm, and clearly after review, he's clearly
- 8:24Speaker 1: on film with it. And I think in looking back
- 8:28Speaker 1: on it, Chad, the NFL review of this is what
- 8:31Speaker 1: took so long from last Thursday to now because Sully
- 8:35Speaker 1: gets into how the NFL has handled this. Again, there
- 8:39Speaker 1: are things now that they can do for him, and
- 8:44Speaker 1: I think the Titans did the right thing, released him.
- 8:46Speaker 1: If you violate the NFL policy– with this. They can
- 8:49Speaker 1: release you, no questions asked, but they do get the
- 8:52Speaker 1: NFLPA involved. And it sounds like everyone's in agreement with
- 8:56Speaker 1: the decision that the Titans made and whatever help that
- 8:59Speaker 1: they're getting for him. I listened to the key words
- 9:03Speaker 1: and thought self-harm more than harm for someone else based
- 9:07Speaker 1: on just the words that Sala used and why he
- 9:10Speaker 1: ended up talking about it.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Yeah, look, I think Sala is a decent guy. I do.
- 9:16Speaker 5: I think where he's coming from with this is from
- 9:19Speaker 5: a good place. I will also say that, you know,
- 9:23Speaker 5: we're talking about a guy who threatened a teammate and
- 9:26Speaker 5: walked to his vehicle and in Salah's work, pulled a
- 9:28Speaker 5: gun at the vehicle. It didn't go past that, but
- 9:32Speaker 5: pulled a gun.
- 9:33Speaker 2: And I.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Want to give full credit to Robert Salah for speaking
- 9:38Speaker 5: openly and speaking as much as he did about this.
- 9:41Speaker 5: I also think that it's very convenient that this got
- 9:44Speaker 5: turned suddenly from a gigantic negative about the type of
- 9:48Speaker 5: people the Titans brought in and this issue in the
- 9:50Speaker 5: locker room into a, hey guys, we care about mental
- 9:54Speaker 5: health here with this organization and with the Titans. I
- 9:57Speaker 5: think when the narrative shifted towards that, I'm not saying
- 10:00Speaker 5: that's what Robert Salas sought to do.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I'm saying that is maybe an unintended.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Positive consequence of this that now suddenly everybody's like, boy, man,
- 10:09Speaker 5: this guy really cares about mental health and about his players'
- 10:13Speaker 5: mental health when this happened. I would then go back
- 10:15Speaker 5: and say, what about J.C. Latham's actual health? In this
- 10:19Speaker 5: whole deal, when this goes down. That's a criminal act.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Is he going to get prosecuted? It doesn't look like
- 10:25Speaker 5: he is. And I'm not asking for the guy to
- 10:27Speaker 5: go to prison for this. I want him to get
- 10:29Speaker 5: the help that he needs. He may be able to
- 10:30Speaker 5: carry a weapon, for all I know, licensed. But yeah,
- 10:35Speaker 5: it says the way the story reads is that the
- 10:37Speaker 5: firearm did not leave the parking area.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And the situation was de-escalated, is what it says. Now,
- 10:44Speaker 1: I'm not going to criticize Sala for anything he said.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Because I commend him for speaking out on it for
- 10:50Speaker 1: two minutes and saying what he said about the player
- 10:54Speaker 1: in an incident where things were de-escalated, thank God, and
- 10:58Speaker 1: you end up having a situation that could have been
- 11:02Speaker 1: just awful, being something where you don't have any injuries
- 11:08Speaker 1: from this. What I've been thinking about is, Burt Nihill
- 11:12Speaker 1: went and did an interview with Corey Curtis, because this
- 11:14Speaker 1: happened on Thursday, and they released this interview on Friday.
- 11:17Speaker 1: and made comments about stability and organizational growth and everything,
- 11:21Speaker 1: knowing that this had happened the day before. And so
- 11:24Speaker 1: that's where I could be critical of that more than
- 11:27Speaker 1: I'll be critical of Salah.
- 11:30Speaker 2: It's a good point. I didn't think about the timeline
- 11:31Speaker 2: of that. And you're right. I mean, that interview dropped
- 11:33Speaker 2: on Friday. I'm assuming he did the interview on Friday.
- 11:36Speaker 5: He certainly would have done it at a time where
- 11:37Speaker 5: he knew this incident happened on a Thursday. Again, you know,
- 11:43Speaker 5: and then the part where he gets into 31 other
- 11:45Speaker 5: coaches can call me and I'll vouch for this guy's character.
- 11:48Speaker 5: He's a great run-stuffing defensive tackle who's a good man
- 11:51Speaker 5: and a good father and all these things. I don't
- 11:54Speaker 5: think that the NFL would– if the NFL forced him
- 11:57Speaker 5: out of the league for this violation of policy– then
- 12:01Speaker 5: no one else could sign him. So if you're vouching
- 12:03Speaker 5: for him, I mean, look, I think they did the
- 12:06Speaker 5: right thing based on policy and everything else.
- 12:09Speaker 2: And I hope he goes and gets the help that
- 12:11Speaker 2: he needs.
- 12:11Speaker 5: But I'm just a little bit confused about how glowing
- 12:15Speaker 5: he spoke about this guy in Jordan Elliott and that, well,
- 12:18Speaker 5: if you feel that way, then suspend him from the
- 12:21Speaker 5: team indefinitely.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Let him go get the help that he needs. Keep
- 12:24Speaker 1: him as an active member of the team. it's not
- 12:27Speaker 1: really going to help him to cut him and cut
- 12:29Speaker 1: him loose right now. If you truly care about the
- 12:31Speaker 1: guy and keep him in the fold and let him
- 12:33Speaker 1: go and do this, if you're vouching for him for
- 12:36Speaker 1: other teams is my point. If you just said, look,
- 12:38Speaker 1: we want him to go and get the help he needs,
- 12:40Speaker 1: it's a violation of team policy.
- 12:42Speaker 2: It's cut and dry.
- 12:43Speaker 5: Here with the Titans, we're going to cut someone if
- 12:45Speaker 5: they have a gun on campus. And this happens.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Our hands are tied. There's nothing we can do. That's
- 12:51Speaker 2: one thing.
- 12:51Speaker 5: But then when you're like, we're going to cut him,
- 12:52Speaker 5: but you should take him. And here's why to the
- 12:55Speaker 5: rest of the league. That part confused me a bit
- 12:59Speaker 5: in the messaging with that.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I'm sure there are.
- 13:01Speaker 1: NFL programs that he's got to go through now. He
- 13:04Speaker 1: would go on a commissioner's list. He'll be suspended if
- 13:07Speaker 1: he were in the league. It's an organizational decision to
- 13:09Speaker 1: release him. But it's not like they'll just release the
- 13:12Speaker 1: guy that brought a gun on campus and, okay, you're
- 13:15Speaker 1: free to go.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Get out of here. You're cut.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I'd rather them handle it like this than not based
- 13:20Speaker 1: on whatever support they're trying to get for him instead
- 13:22Speaker 1: of having beef with J.C. Latham as he leaves the facility.
- 13:26Speaker 1: That's one thing. Number two, Robert Sala knows him better
- 13:30Speaker 1: than most. I mean, he coached him in San Francisco
- 13:32Speaker 1: as well. They brought him in through the system that
- 13:35Speaker 1: Sala was running, knowing the player. He would be on
- 13:39Speaker 1: my list of coaches to call if I were about
- 13:41Speaker 1: to sign the guy. And he wasn't with the Titans.
- 13:45Speaker 1: So I think teams would do that anyway. But, I mean, look,
- 13:50Speaker 1: if this is Jeffrey Simmons, the best player at his position,
- 13:56Speaker 1: Are they cutting him or are they putting him in
- 13:58Speaker 1: the program?
- 13:59Speaker 2: He's suspended, but he's still on the roster. He's on
- 14:01Speaker 2: the commissioner's list, suspended.
- 14:04Speaker 1: This is a guy who has started one game, appeared
- 14:06Speaker 1: in all five, is good against the run.
- 14:08Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. He's the role player.
- 14:11Speaker 1: That's probably handled differently. But that's how I think any
- 14:14Speaker 1: team would treat this. But now they've set a precedent.
- 14:18Speaker 1: And I don't mind that they did that in this instance.
- 14:20Speaker 1: And also, saying what they said instead of just saying, yeah,
- 14:24Speaker 1: we have no comment. and he's free to leave, and
- 14:26Speaker 1: he still has beef with Latham, and have at it.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I think they held it well.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Yeah, look, again, but if we're going to also go
- 14:36Speaker 5: back and say if it was Jeffrey Simmons, they wouldn't.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Have cut him. I don't think so.
- 14:40Speaker 1: But again, my point would be if we're truly about
- 14:45Speaker 1: the individual and his health and everything else, then it's
- 14:48Speaker 1: got to be either you're cutting everybody who does that
- 14:51Speaker 1: and forcing them to go get health, Or you're going
- 14:53Speaker 1: to keep them on the roster and they're going to
- 14:55Speaker 1: be put on the commissioner's list and they can get
- 14:57Speaker 1: the help while on the team at that point. And
- 15:00Speaker 1: I think it would be the same programs or whatever else.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I don't know the programs that the NFL is doing.
- 15:04Speaker 1: He alludes to that, though, the support that the NFL
- 15:06Speaker 1: is going to get and the way that they handle
- 15:08Speaker 1: it with the NFLPA. I think there's a joint agreement
- 15:11Speaker 1: there with whatever they have to do if this happens,
- 15:14Speaker 1: like there would be with many other things that are
- 15:16Speaker 1: on this policy, I'm sure. I don't pretend to know
- 15:19Speaker 1: the very details of that, but it seems like Sala
- 15:22Speaker 1: alluded to it and was there firsthand during discussions of it.
- 15:27Speaker 1: But yeah, I'd prefer this than just that we'll have
- 15:30Speaker 1: no further comment on the matter.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 15:33Speaker 1: The fact he spoke, I give him credit for. And
- 15:35Speaker 1: he may be asked about this again. He may come
- 15:36Speaker 1: back today and say, hey, I want to go further
- 15:38Speaker 1: with what I said. We're concerned for J.C.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Latham also. This is part of this, right?
- 15:42Speaker 5: We don't tolerate someone getting into a verbal or physical
- 15:46Speaker 5: altercation in practice and And it escalated to someone walking
- 15:48Speaker 5: to their vehicle to go get a gun. So let's
- 15:51Speaker 5: be clear on that, too. We're very firm against those
- 15:54Speaker 5: type of things happening. What we heard there, though, was
- 15:58Speaker 5: all about Elliott and all about concern about him.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Not a lot of concern about J.C. Latham that he
- 16:05Speaker 1: spoke about in that whole thing, right? That's where I
- 16:09Speaker 1: think people get the mixed messaging. I also think people
- 16:11Speaker 1: are responding to this in one of two extremes. It's
- 16:15Speaker 1: all about, boy, everything Robert Sala said, amazing mental health awareness,
- 16:20Speaker 1: all of this.
- 16:21Speaker 5: And other people, it's in the YouTube chat right now.
- 16:23Speaker 5: It's like, this guy's a criminal. This guy needs to
- 16:26Speaker 5: be locked up. Who cares about his mental health and
- 16:29Speaker 5: this and that? I do think there's a little bit
- 16:31Speaker 5: of both here. I like that Robert Sala said that
- 16:33Speaker 5: and what he said. I like that he cares about
- 16:35Speaker 5: him as a person.
- 16:36Speaker 2: I believe it. I buy it when Robert Salas says that.
- 16:39Speaker 5: I also think you could be even stronger with what
- 16:42Speaker 5: you're saying about, but there's a zero tolerance policy here.
- 16:46Speaker 5: We can't have him on our team now that he
- 16:47Speaker 5: did that on our premise.
- 16:50Speaker 1: What he said was he's a good man. He had
- 16:51Speaker 1: terrible lapse in judgment. That would be a comment for
- 16:54Speaker 1: someone that's staying on the team, but this guy's not.
- 16:57Speaker 1: They still got him. They did both in this. They're
- 17:00Speaker 1: showing support and also told him to GTFO as an organization.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I can't fault that. for the way it was handled.
- 17:08Speaker 1: And again, I'm listening between the lines here. He references
- 17:14Speaker 1: self-harm more than he references someone else's harm. So I
- 17:17Speaker 1: can't help but think about that than the other thing, which, again,
- 17:21Speaker 1: it stayed in the parking facility. And if he has
- 17:24Speaker 1: a license to carry, the rule is he can't have
- 17:26Speaker 1: it on the campus of the Titans.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Not that he can't have it in his car. So,
- 17:30Speaker 2: I mean, again, I don't know the details of all
- 17:33Speaker 2: of that, but there's no.
- 17:36Speaker 1: You know, it doesn't sound like the fact that the
- 17:38Speaker 1: Metro police or anybody, they weren't contacted. It doesn't sound
- 17:42Speaker 1: like they're all upset about that based on the reporting
- 17:44Speaker 1: of A to Z. I mean, look, whatever happened, whether
- 17:50Speaker 1: he's under some sort of, you know, welfare check right
- 17:53Speaker 1: now mentally or that he's under a self-harm alert or
- 17:57Speaker 1: anything like that. John Franklin Myers knows probably more than
- 18:00Speaker 1: anybody right now because he was the one who talked
- 18:03Speaker 1: him down and was at the vehicle with him.
- 18:05Speaker 2: We don't know what Elliott was saying to him. In
- 18:08Speaker 2: all fairness, we don't.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Know what was said there that Robert Sala is referencing
- 18:13Speaker 5: when he talks about something. I know what he's referencing
- 18:15Speaker 5: in terms of, hey, guys, there are NFL players who
- 18:17Speaker 5: have taken their own lives here recently. This has been
- 18:21Speaker 5: a problem. So my mind did go to that also
- 18:24Speaker 5: when he's got a gun in his car.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Totally fair.
- 18:27Speaker 5: I think we all should agree, totally fair, that that
- 18:30Speaker 5: should be a concern with players in the NFL and
- 18:33Speaker 5: when things like this happen.
- 18:35Speaker 1: And clearly he knew to follow him out there to
- 18:38Speaker 1: try to de-escalate something because of something he overheard in
- 18:40Speaker 1: the locker room, right? That would be another point to
- 18:43Speaker 1: make in all of this. Look, we're very fortunate we're
- 18:47Speaker 1: not talking about something else with this story, with the
- 18:50Speaker 1: way that it was handled.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Thank goodness for Franklin Myers in this case.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Yeah, and I'm very interested now in the sequel to
- 18:57Speaker 5: all of this. Like, where does Jordan Elliott go from here?
- 18:59Speaker 5: I mean, I hope that he figures it out, and
- 19:02Speaker 5: it was just one brutal lapse in judgment, and he
- 19:05Speaker 5: let his temper get the best of him, and there's
- 19:07Speaker 5: not a lot of other underlying things going on with him.
- 19:09Speaker 2: My assumption is that there are a lot of underlying.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Issues going on with him that would lead to something
- 19:14Speaker 5: like this, and he's going to have to get evaluated
- 19:16Speaker 5: and get the help that he needs. But I am
- 19:19Speaker 5: now interested in what is the next chapter of this
- 19:22Speaker 5: guy's life, not just football. But what's the next chapter
- 19:26Speaker 5: of his life? Because we've seen too many times where
- 19:30Speaker 5: one bad decision defines someone's entire life in terms of
- 19:34Speaker 5: what people perceive them to be. And that's oftentimes, I'll
- 19:38Speaker 5: say pretty much every time unfortunate, with the exception of
- 19:41Speaker 5: some truly awful things that take place. But with this,
- 19:45Speaker 5: where no one ends up hurt, I hope he gets
- 19:48Speaker 5: the help that he needs. I'm glad that he's no
- 19:50Speaker 5: longer with the Tennessee Titans. I think the team made
- 19:52Speaker 5: the right decision to cut ties with him. I applaud
- 19:55Speaker 5: Sala for speaking. I applaud Sala for speaking. I don't
- 20:00Speaker 5: agree with everything he said in his message, but again.
- 20:03Speaker 1: I'm not going to sit here as someone who's been
- 20:05Speaker 1: so critical, and we have on the show, of the
- 20:07Speaker 1: Titans for hiding behind written statements, for not speaking, for
- 20:11Speaker 1: when it is time to answer tough questions, they go
- 20:14Speaker 1: on a damn show with Corey Curtis and Teron Davenport,
- 20:17Speaker 1: and they get softballs thrown their way in Burke-Nihill.
- 20:20Speaker 2: I'm going to sit here.
- 20:21Speaker 5: And say, I was stunned when I saw Robert Sala
- 20:24Speaker 5: actually addressing it and talking about it and saying what
- 20:27Speaker 5: he did yesterday, because I fully expect the Titans to say,
- 20:30Speaker 5: we'll refer to the statement. Go back to the statement
- 20:33Speaker 5: that was released yesterday. That's all we're talking about it
- 20:35Speaker 5: because it's a legal matter. They could have easily hidden
- 20:38Speaker 5: behind that and they didn't.
- 20:39Speaker 1: An organization that needs leadership. I thought that Robert Sala
- 20:43Speaker 1: showed that in this. And for an organization that takes
- 20:46Speaker 1: the field on Sunday, they've shown a lot more in
- 20:49Speaker 1: regards to this than the Cleveland Browns who will have
- 20:51Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson at quarterback. So, you know, there's two different
- 20:55Speaker 1: presidents set right there and I'm not faulting the Titans
- 20:57Speaker 1: for the stance they took.
- 20:59Speaker 2: No.
- 20:59Speaker 1: And again, Kudos to Robert Sala for speaking. I disagree
- 21:03Speaker 1: with a lot of what he said, but I think
- 21:05Speaker 1: that he means what he said. Look, I disagree with
- 21:08Speaker 1: a lot of what.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Bernie Sanders has to say on matters, but I've always
- 21:11Speaker 5: admired Bernie Sanders because.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I believe he believes it.
- 21:15Speaker 1: He's not some paid robot that's going to regurgitate what
- 21:18Speaker 1: someone else wants him to think or believe. I don't
- 21:21Speaker 1: buy into Bernie Sanders' political policies, but I've always respected
- 21:25Speaker 1: the guy because I feel like he's a 100% true
- 21:28Speaker 1: believer in everything that he is saying. He is not
- 21:31Speaker 1: putting on a front. He's not lying about his.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Feelings or thoughts on anything, and I respect that. When
- 21:36Speaker 5: I watch Robert Sala, I feel the same way. I
- 21:38Speaker 5: don't think he's putting a front on. I don't think
- 21:39Speaker 5: he's lying.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I can disagree with him, but I can respect the
- 21:43Speaker 1: fact that I believe he believes everything that he's saying.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Coming up, there's a coach who's out. In college football,
- 21:51Speaker 1: we discuss who could be next. Plus, we have one
- 21:54Speaker 1: big thing in college football and SEC's over and under achievers.

- 23:15Speaker 1: Chad, we can look at some odds on the next
- 23:18Speaker 1: coach fired because we know now that there's at least one.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Coach out for the first time this season. It took
- 23:24Speaker 2: a while.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Mike Loxley. He's out with Maryland. That news coming down yesterday.
- 23:31Speaker 1: And there's several players Names and interesting names that are
- 23:35Speaker 1: on a list of maybe the next guy on the
- 23:38Speaker 1: hot seat to take the pink slip and maybe not
- 23:42Speaker 1: even make the season complete. Well, let's first, I want
- 23:45Speaker 1: to talk about the three guys that were initially mentioned
- 23:47Speaker 1: to take over at Maryland, which jumped out to me.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Dan Mullen was the first name that popped up, leaving
- 23:56Speaker 1: from UNLV. Brian Kelly, getting back in the game at Maryland.
- 24:01Speaker 1: And then Jake Dickert.
- 24:02Speaker 2: At Wake Forest.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I think Jake Dickert's a terrific coach, and he is
- 24:06Speaker 1: a more with less type of guy.
- 24:08Speaker 2: He did it at Washington State. He's doing it now
- 24:10Speaker 2: at Wake Forest.
- 24:11Speaker 5: They don't spend anything compared to their rivals and what
- 24:14Speaker 5: they spend on that roster, and he doesn't even make
- 24:16Speaker 5: excuses about it.
- 24:17Speaker 2: He's like, yeah, it's not an excuse.
- 24:19Speaker 1: We have to do a better job of evaluating than
- 24:21Speaker 1: everyone else, and that's what we're going to do. We're
- 24:23Speaker 1: going to out-evaluate you even if we're not spending the
- 24:25Speaker 1: money of some other schools. That sounds like a great
- 24:28Speaker 1: recipe for a job like Maryland. Now, you are in
- 24:31Speaker 1: the Big Ten. how much better of a job is
- 24:35Speaker 1: Maryland than Wake Forest? With Wake Forest and the ACC?
- 24:38Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 24:39Speaker 1: That's up for people to debate. That's up for how
- 24:41Speaker 1: much money each school is going to spend and everything else.
- 24:43Speaker 1: But I think that's a reasonable question to ask. And
- 24:45Speaker 1: if you're Dan Mullen, if you can keep having success
- 24:47Speaker 1: at UNLV, do you take the Maryland job now or
- 24:51Speaker 1: do you wait for a better job to open up?
- 24:53Speaker 2: So some questions to be answered there.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Speaking of jobs that could open up for Dan Mullen
- 24:58Speaker 1: or anyone else, here are the.
- 25:01Speaker 5: Odds right now of the next coach to get fired.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Mike Norvell, no surprise. The problem with Mike Norvell, Hud,
- 25:08Speaker 5: is his team's shown a lot of fight. They had
- 25:10Speaker 5: a great chance to knock off number one Miami this
- 25:13Speaker 5: past week. They've done some good things, even though they
- 25:16Speaker 5: continue to lose.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Well, and this is a case of you have the
- 25:22Speaker 1: university talking about how much debt they're in. You have
- 25:27Speaker 1: a decision to make on the buyout. because he got
- 25:30Speaker 1: this contract whenever the Alabama job came open. And you
- 25:34Speaker 1: have to decide whether or not paying the coach is
- 25:37Speaker 1: too steep that you can afford to pay the coach,
- 25:39Speaker 1: or can you afford or not afford for not firing
- 25:43Speaker 1: the coach for the direction of your program. This is
- 25:46Speaker 1: the top of the list just based on that and results.
- 25:50Speaker 1: If we look at this list, Chad, let's just go
- 25:51Speaker 1: through it in the top five or six and say
- 25:54Speaker 1: yes or no if we think they're out.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Mike Norvell, yes.
- 25:58Speaker 1: You'll eventually have someone step up and pay that ticket.
- 26:02Speaker 1: That's always the case. They'll have someone step forward because
- 26:04Speaker 1: they're so pissed off at the job and the fact
- 26:06Speaker 1: that they want to win and keep up with the Joneses.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Because they're Florida State, they're on another list that we'll
- 26:12Speaker 1: look at coming up in the show. But, yeah, I
- 26:15Speaker 1: say yes on this.
- 26:16Speaker 5: Yeah, Lance Leipold, I feel like, just got a huge
- 26:18Speaker 5: extension and raise after a great start at Kansas.
- 26:22Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Look, I don't even know what the appetite for great
- 26:26Speaker 1: football is at Kansas half the time.
- 26:28Speaker 2: It looked like they committed. They improved their stadium.
- 26:31Speaker 5: They have a beautiful new setup there with their football
- 26:34Speaker 5: facility and everything else. And I guess the thinking is, hey,
- 26:37Speaker 5: we did all this, and now Leipold's not winning anymore,
- 26:40Speaker 5: so it's time to go get someone else that they
- 26:41Speaker 5: can bring into their new facilities, which is understandable. Dave Dorn,
- 26:45Speaker 5: I thought, was dead the moment his quarterback wouldn't take
- 26:49Speaker 5: a knee properly against Vanderbilt and lost that game.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 26:54Speaker 5: They've done some decent things since then, shockingly. Greg Sciano
- 26:57Speaker 5: hasn't done anything at Rutgers in his second stint. So again,
- 27:01Speaker 5: that's another one. It's a question of what is your
- 27:04Speaker 5: appetite for success at Rutgers? Have you thrown your hands
- 27:06Speaker 5: up and just said, guys, it's never going to happen.
- 27:08Speaker 5: We made a mistake from a competitive standpoint joining the
- 27:11Speaker 5: Big Ten and we can't win in this conference.
- 27:13Speaker 2: So what does any of it even matter? I don't know.
- 27:16Speaker 2: but it's interesting.
- 27:17Speaker 5: He's fourth on this list where I feel like Hutton,
- 27:20Speaker 5: he should be right there with Mike Norvell. If you're
- 27:22Speaker 5: looking at someone who hasn't gotten anything done at a place, right?
- 27:25Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. Yes.
- 27:27Speaker 1: And then look at the run on 18 and 22
- 27:30Speaker 1: to one, Mike Elko, Shane Beamer, Luke Fickle, and then
- 27:33Speaker 1: Jeff Levy. Ryan Silverfield is there as well. At 28
- 27:37Speaker 1: to one. Coaching for the buyout.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Great song.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Hey, I mean, Elko, how does he handle the stretch
- 27:44Speaker 1: here when he's facing heat? You know, I, I think
- 27:46Speaker 1: the way that we saw the thing go down with
- 27:52Speaker 1: Billy's cesspool, I think to myself, Billy helped him keep
- 27:59Speaker 1: his job on that with how he handled it and
- 28:01Speaker 1: didn't go after him because that was low-hanging fruit. If
- 28:03Speaker 1: Billy took the high road, Chad, I think in most cases,
- 28:07Speaker 1: if this is another university where the fans don't show
- 28:10Speaker 1: as much patience– and you don't have the sights that
- 28:13Speaker 1: are covering your team, show as much patience and generosity
- 28:16Speaker 1: in that moment. Billy released a statement saying he's going
- 28:19Speaker 1: to have comment later. He's going to think about things.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I don't think most people would do that. They would
- 28:25Speaker 1: have buried this guy, because that's a battle he's not
- 28:27Speaker 1: going to win. Shane Beamer, quite frankly, if Beamer wins
- 28:31Speaker 1: this week against Tennessee... He's safe. I think he's safe,
- 28:34Speaker 1: because he has an argument against Florida.
- 28:36Speaker 5: I think they have rallied better than anyone expected. with
- 28:39Speaker 5: that blowout win at Florida. They're coming off a bye.
- 28:43Speaker 5: We're going to get into that tomorrow with the top
- 28:45Speaker 5: ten college football games. But what are some commonalities between
- 28:49Speaker 5: surprising games that happen? Now, this wouldn't be a surprise
- 28:52Speaker 5: because Vegas actually has South Carolina favored by two and
- 28:55Speaker 5: a half, and I think it may have ticked up.
- 28:57Speaker 2: To three, in fact. But Auburn, Georgia, a great example. Well,
- 29:01Speaker 2: what happened in that game?
- 29:02Speaker 5: Georgia just had an emotional win over Alabama on the road.
- 29:06Speaker 5: They had gone– All these weeks without a break, with
- 29:09Speaker 5: no bye week, and you had Auburn coming off a bye.
- 29:13Speaker 5: Going into that game, getting ready for them, and they
- 29:15Speaker 5: pull off the upset.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Tennessee, South Carolina.
- 29:18Speaker 5: Tennessee's about to go eight straight weeks without a bye,
- 29:21Speaker 5: which is a late bye in the season. South Carolina's
- 29:23Speaker 5: coming off their rest. They blow out Florida on the road.
- 29:27Speaker 5: They're feeling good about it. They get a week off,
- 29:29Speaker 5: and now they're getting ready for Tennessee. This is Tennessee's
- 29:31Speaker 5: last game before they get two weeks. They get the
- 29:34Speaker 5: week off before then going into November in the back
- 29:37Speaker 5: part of their schedule.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Again, I'm not saying that as an excuse.
- 29:41Speaker 5: I'm just saying if you're looking for some common themes
- 29:43Speaker 5: of how these games happen, that could be a factor
- 29:46Speaker 5: in this game for sure.
- 29:47Speaker 2: But I'm with you. I think Beamer's safe, especially if
- 29:49Speaker 2: they win this week. They win, for sure.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and even if they lose, I don't know that
- 29:53Speaker 1: he's going to get fired based on what they have
- 29:55Speaker 1: left and games they could win.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Fickle's going to get fired. I firmly believe that.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I think he would have last year had the jobs
- 30:03Speaker 1: in the SEC not.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Been wide open the way they were. He should be
- 30:05Speaker 2: way higher on this list. I agree. I think.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Jeff Levy should be lower on the list. Lincoln Riley's
- 30:10Speaker 1: way down this list for some reason.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Yeah, if Kamario Taylor's healthy, Jeff Levy's not even on
- 30:14Speaker 5: this list right now.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Totally agree on that. Ryan Silverfield, I mean, I.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Think the only way Ryan Silverfield's going to be a
- 30:21Speaker 1: one-and-done is if there is some sort of coup that
- 30:24Speaker 1: is orchestrated by Arkansas people that gets rid of the AD...
- 30:29Speaker 1: that brings in a new administration and says, we're going
- 30:31Speaker 1: to do a complete reset of the football program and
- 30:34Speaker 1: start anew.
- 30:35Speaker 2: And after one year, it's not a huge loss. He
- 30:37Speaker 2: was only here a year.
- 30:38Speaker 5: We're going to go get somebody else and rebuild this
- 30:40Speaker 5: thing with a different head coach. I think he's probably safe, though.
- 30:44Speaker 5: Bill O'Brien's interesting. Good start for him. Has not been
- 30:48Speaker 5: good since. Lincoln Riley. Dabo Sweeney's not getting fired, I
- 30:52Speaker 5: don't believe, anyway. Kalen DeBoer's not getting fired. The guy
- 30:57Speaker 5: would leave before he's fired.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Deion's going to retire before he gets fired. You're spot on.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian I don't think is getting fired. But if
- 31:07Speaker 1: they lose their third straight game this week and things
- 31:10Speaker 1: start to fall apart with how much investment has gone
- 31:13Speaker 1: on in that program and how much investment into Arch
- 31:16Speaker 1: Manning and Hutton, we know the political pressures with that
- 31:19Speaker 1: job in the state of Texas. I'm not saying it's impossible.
- 31:23Speaker 1: that Steve Sarkeesian is out of a job by the
- 31:25Speaker 1: end of the year?
- 31:25Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 31:27Speaker 1: And again, he's not an easy guy to deal with.
- 31:32Speaker 1: And I understand this is just Vegas. This is not
- 31:34Speaker 1: actual reporting of people going. But if you want to
- 31:37Speaker 1: look at an example of, okay, college football has jumped
- 31:41Speaker 1: the shark in terms of expectations of fans and where
- 31:44Speaker 1: we are right now and job pressure for coaches, look
- 31:47Speaker 1: at the final two entries on that list. Kyle Whittingham
- 31:50Speaker 1: and Matt Campbell in year one.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Come on now. Come on now. They're just taking that
- 31:54Speaker 2: as a flyer. I don't care what happens.
- 31:56Speaker 5: Sharon Moore had his issues with the program. Kyle Whittingham
- 31:59Speaker 5: inherited those. They invested way too much money in Bryce Underwood,
- 32:03Speaker 5: who's not very good. They're already replacing him with Lloyd
- 32:06Speaker 5: Carr's grandson to start this weekend after replacing him last week.
- 32:10Speaker 5: Kyle Whittingham is completely safe at Michigan. The only risk
- 32:14Speaker 5: of Kyle Whittingham not being at Michigan is if he
- 32:15Speaker 5: decides I'm going to retire after a year because I
- 32:18Speaker 5: don't want to deal with this stuff anymore.
- 32:19Speaker 1: And Matt Campbell, the same thing. They're not going to
- 32:22Speaker 1: fire Matt Campbell after one year. And the next coach fired,
- 32:26Speaker 1: which is what you would be– it would be in
- 32:29Speaker 1: season here. So we're looking at the top three options
- 32:33Speaker 1: is what I would say for what could happen realistically.
- 32:37Speaker 2: But, I mean, will we see as much movement in
- 32:40Speaker 2: the SEC? No. Not like we did last year.
- 32:43Speaker 3: No.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Last year was crazy. And this year, maybe a bit
- 32:47Speaker 1: more stability, at least for right now. I mean, Jeff Lebby, again,
- 32:52Speaker 1: you're dead on with what they've done prior to the
- 32:54Speaker 1: quarterback injury. No, he should not be fired. And same
- 32:59Speaker 1: thing in Arkansas. I mean, if we saw the walkout
- 33:04Speaker 1: or whatever that they had for the first game, the
- 33:06Speaker 1: first home game where they didn't show up, that didn't continue.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Had that continued?
- 33:12Speaker 1: Maybe. Maybe. With the fans not showing up and just
- 33:15Speaker 1: apathy towards anything they're doing. And they're just going to
- 33:19Speaker 1: basketball games now. But Arkansas has basically declared they're a
- 33:21Speaker 1: basketball school. But they did that whenever they hired him.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Not when they fired him. They're not going to spend
- 33:26Speaker 1: money all of a sudden. They clearly showed that they're
- 33:29Speaker 1: just putting all their money in basketball.
- 33:32Speaker 5: I think you're spot on with that. Also, another name
- 33:34Speaker 5: on the list that jumped out to me. Do you
- 33:36Speaker 5: remember when Sonny Dyches was playing for a national championship
- 33:38Speaker 5: with TCU?
- 33:40Speaker 2: Just a short time ago?
- 33:42Speaker 5: Doesn't that feel like light years ago when you think
- 33:44Speaker 5: about Sonny Dykes losing.
- 33:46Speaker 2: To North Carolina? It feels like 10 years ago to me.
- 33:48Speaker 5: Flying to Ireland and losing to Bill Belichick in a bog.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:53Speaker 5: You know, just to open the season. I'm thinking, that
- 33:55Speaker 5: guy played for a national championship.
- 33:57Speaker 1: He got boat raced by Michigan, but that was not
- 34:01Speaker 1: that long ago, and now he may get fired in season.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Crazy.
- 34:04Speaker 5: Brooke says, Fickle has coached his way off the hot
- 34:07Speaker 5: seat according to most Big Ten people. They'll likely finish
- 34:10Speaker 5: 7-5 or 8-4. currently 4-2 favorite in three to four
- 34:14Speaker 5: more games this year. 7-5 with their schedule, if that's
- 34:19Speaker 5: enough to keep him, good for you, Wisconsin.
- 34:22Speaker 2: He saves it this week, probably. Good for you.
- 34:25Speaker 5: I've got higher expectations for my Wisconsin Badgers than what
- 34:29Speaker 5: Luke Fickle has accomplished at Wisconsin in his time there.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Crazy. We've got USC this week. But USC's been better
- 34:36Speaker 2: on the road within the conference.
- 34:39Speaker 1: But again, a quick turn and Again, Fickle's trying to
- 34:43Speaker 1: coach his way back there. Maybe Brooks is right, but
- 34:47Speaker 1: I felt like he was going to lose his job
- 34:48Speaker 1: last year had there not been so much movement with
- 34:50Speaker 1: all the coaches choosing to go elsewhere. They didn't take
- 34:53Speaker 1: the dive. They didn't decide to go spend that much
- 34:56Speaker 1: money on coaches for the guys they wanted.
- 34:58Speaker 5: Catfish Jake says, if Bama loses to Texas A &
- 35:00Speaker 5: M and LSU, a good chance DeBoer is gone, and
- 35:03Speaker 5: there's a damn good chance that happens. They're not losing
- 35:05Speaker 5: to A & M at home coming off that loss
- 35:08Speaker 5: to Tennessee. I don't think A & M has the offense– Now,
- 35:12Speaker 5: that could be an uncomfortable game with Texas A &
- 35:15Speaker 5: M' s defense. That could be a close sort of slugfest
- 35:18Speaker 5: type game. But I think that game's probably like a
- 35:22Speaker 5: 24 to 19 type weird score. And Alabama holds on
- 35:28Speaker 5: and Texas A & M scores late to make it
- 35:29Speaker 5: look closer than it actually was. But yeah, I mean,
- 35:33Speaker 5: if I'm picking a winner right now in Death Valley,
- 35:35Speaker 5: LSU is going to win.
- 35:36Speaker 2: At home over Alabama, and that's going to give them
- 35:38Speaker 2: a third loss on the season.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Just pondering how quickly things change. The coaches that either
- 35:46Speaker 1: made the playoff last year, like Elko, or the coaches
- 35:49Speaker 1: who have been to the playoff or played for a
- 35:51Speaker 1: title that are on this list quickly.
- 35:55Speaker 2: There's not one truth.
- 35:57Speaker 5: We're going to get into this in the next segment
- 35:59Speaker 5: on underachievers and overachievers. There's never just one truth when
- 36:03Speaker 5: it comes to a team and a coach in what
- 36:05Speaker 5: he's done. Alabama's a great example of this. Alabama Hutton
- 36:08Speaker 5: three weeks ago was God's gift to offensive football. I mean,
- 36:11Speaker 5: they went into Starkville in a game that I picked
- 36:13Speaker 5: Mississippi State to win and just pulled the larynx out
- 36:18Speaker 5: of the Bulldogs in that game. And Keelan Russell is
- 36:21Speaker 5: running around, dropping dimes 50 yards down the field. They're
- 36:25Speaker 5: doing whatever they want offensively. They're breaking records for points
- 36:28Speaker 5: on the road in the SEC and killing Mississippi State.
- 36:32Speaker 5: Defense is opportunistic. They're scoring touchdowns. Kalen DeBoer, we're talking
- 36:37Speaker 5: about his record is better than Nick Saban's through his
- 36:40Speaker 5: first so many games or the same as him in Alabama.
- 36:42Speaker 2: All those things. Two weeks later, they win one close.
- 36:45Speaker 5: Game on a controversial call that should have been a
- 36:48Speaker 5: pass interference that would have given them another chance to Georgia.
- 36:51Speaker 5: And they get their doors kicked in by Tennessee.
- 36:54Speaker 2: No doubt.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Physically, they got whipped in that game. But two weeks
- 36:58Speaker 1: ago against Georgia, DeBoer's not on the hot seat. He's
- 37:02Speaker 1: being praised for the way he handled the player who
- 37:04Speaker 1: made the dumb decision to push the player that pushes opponent.
- 37:08Speaker 1: This is your fault.
- 37:09Speaker 2: That was the storyline. You lost the game. I love that.
- 37:14Speaker 2: When you can see, it's.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Back to back weeks for him with a means because
- 37:18Speaker 1: he's got the Rocky top meal on the sideline to
- 37:20Speaker 1: Rocky top where his face is.
- 37:22Speaker 2: That needs to be a t-shirt. That's a, uh, that face. Yes.
- 37:27Speaker 5: Sporting state, sporting state marketing. If you're listening, uh, If
- 37:30Speaker 5: we get a picture of DeBoer's weird face in Neyland Stadium,
- 37:33Speaker 5: that would be a great shirt to sell. But yeah,
- 37:35Speaker 5: I mean, again, I think Caleb DeBoer's a good coach.
- 37:39Speaker 5: I will believe he's a good coach the rest of
- 37:40Speaker 5: this season. But there are multiple truths about a college
- 37:44Speaker 5: football team in any given one season.
- 37:46Speaker 2: What was said.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Three weeks ago about Caleb DeBoer is still true. And
- 37:50Speaker 1: about that Alabama team. What we know now about Alabama
- 37:54Speaker 1: is true. They lost a close home game to a
- 37:56Speaker 1: very good Georgia team. And Tennessee decided to whip them physically,
- 38:00Speaker 1: and they accomplished it. Those two things happened in the
- 38:03Speaker 1: last two weeks. And now they've got a chance to
- 38:05Speaker 1: go home and beat A & M. But I am
- 38:07Speaker 1: with Jake. If they lose to A & M at home,
- 38:10Speaker 1: there's going to be a lot of people calling for
- 38:12Speaker 1: his head.
- 38:13Speaker 5: Whether right or wrong, and I think that's wrong, there's
- 38:16Speaker 5: going to be a lot of people calling for his head.
- 38:18Speaker 2: There's no doubt.
- 38:18Speaker 1: And it's not that Tennessee beat them. Tennessee beats them
- 38:21Speaker 1: at Neyland. We've seen that. It's how they lost.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Yep.
- 38:24Speaker 1: That's how Tennessee beat them. This was not a 50-yard
- 38:27Speaker 1: field goal at the buzzer. This was not an interception
- 38:30Speaker 1: to seal a 24-17 win like it was in 2024.
- 38:34Speaker 5: Jason Swain, who you had on last week, I know, Hutton,
- 38:36Speaker 5: said this was the best win he has witnessed for
- 38:41Speaker 5: Josh Heupel because it is not just winning. He said
- 38:45Speaker 5: it was thrilling in 2022 to beat Nick Saban. 2024
- 38:47Speaker 5: was great to win a close game. This was a
- 38:52Speaker 5: physical manhandling of they were telling Alabama where they're going
- 38:56Speaker 5: to run the football right down the middle, and they
- 38:59Speaker 5: did it over and over again in the second half.
- 39:01Speaker 5: And defensively, we've talked a lot about it. It's as
- 39:04Speaker 5: good of a game plan and as well executed of
- 39:06Speaker 5: one as I can remember for any Tennessee defense. To
- 39:09Speaker 5: do that to that offense with Jim Knowles, it's as
- 39:12Speaker 5: good of a one-game sample as As I've ever seen,
- 39:16Speaker 5: and there's been some really good Tennessee defenses over the year,
- 39:19Speaker 5: including one that won them a national title in 1998.
- 39:21Speaker 5: That's as good as I've seen from Jim Knowles.
- 39:25Speaker 2: So again, Kalen DeBoer's a good coach.
- 39:29Speaker 5: Is it going to get nervy for him if they
- 39:31Speaker 5: lose to A & M?
- 39:32Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 39:33Speaker 1: But they should not fire him no matter what happens
- 39:35Speaker 1: this year. Coming up, over and under achievers across college
- 39:39Speaker 1: football and the SEC. That's straight ahead here on Huntington Withrow. John,
- 39:43Speaker 1: I think it's been a perfect 10 start to the show.
- 39:44Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 39:45Speaker 5: I think if you could reach 11... then I think
- 39:48Speaker 5: we may have reached 11. But we're perfectly satisfied with
- 39:52Speaker 5: a perfect 10.

- 40:50Speaker 2: Coming up, we have one big thing on every NFL game,
- 40:51Speaker 2: plus Conrad Thompson joins us.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Right now, the 25 most expensive rosters not in the
- 40:58Speaker 1: top 25. So looking at them, right at the top,
- 41:02Speaker 1: the most expensive unranked rosters, Oregon, Texas A & M, Michigan, Oklahoma,
- 41:08Speaker 1: Penn State. The money doesn't surprise me based on the
- 41:12Speaker 1: competitive level of these conferences, but Chad, it's the SEC
- 41:15Speaker 1: and the Big Ten, and these teams are, well, they
- 41:19Speaker 1: may have been all in two or three years ago
- 41:21Speaker 1: with this number, but they've kept the number right where
- 41:23Speaker 1: it was. They're finally reaching the level of LSU, courtesy
- 41:28Speaker 1: of 2024.
- 41:30Speaker 2: We've seen the other rosters go way up.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Michigan, though, Texas A & M, Oregon, the teams at
- 41:37Speaker 1: the top have an expectation of not just top 25,
- 41:40Speaker 1: but college football playoff numbers. And if you start looking
- 41:44Speaker 1: at the bottom of the top 10, Florida State, Vanderbilt, Clemson, Auburn,
- 41:49Speaker 1: maybe some teams that are not in rebuild mode, but
- 41:52Speaker 1: in a level that's not up to the standard or
- 41:56Speaker 1: the expectation, I think is a better word, of what
- 41:58Speaker 1: the top five looks like here.
- 42:00Speaker 5: I think the number is either 10 or 11 of
- 42:02Speaker 5: programs that spend $ 40- plus million. And I believe the number
- 42:05Speaker 5: is one, maybe two, that spend plus $ 50 million. That's
- 42:09Speaker 5: Texas and maybe Ohio State. On that list, it's closer
- 42:13Speaker 5: to 50. Oregon at $ 43 million, not being in the
- 42:19Speaker 5: top 25. Their quarterback got hurt, a big reason why.
- 42:22Speaker 5: And they had a disappointing loss early at Oklahoma State.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Even at the start, they were getting out slow to
- 42:27Speaker 2: the gate.
- 42:28Speaker 5: I'm surprised they're $ 10 million more than A & M
- 42:30Speaker 5: and that Michigan. They're $ 10 million.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Less than Oregon.
- 42:34Speaker 5: I thought that would be a little bit closer, honestly,
- 42:36Speaker 5: with the amount they're spending. Vanderbilt spends more than Nebraska.
- 42:41Speaker 2: On football. Vanderbilt being this high surprised me. Yeah. 24.5 million.
- 42:48Speaker 2: But higher than Nebraska, higher than South Carolina.
- 42:51Speaker 5: I mean, think about the dudes on South Carolina's roster.
- 42:55Speaker 2: They're 12th at 21 million. But you know what?
- 42:57Speaker 1: There's only $ 4 million that separate 25th from Vanderbilt.
- 43:02Speaker 2: You know? Yeah. You're tight on the money there.
- 43:05Speaker 1: What that tells me is there are a lot of programs–
- 43:10Speaker 1: They're just spending $ 20 million to $ 25 million for the
- 43:13Speaker 1: opportunity to be in the top 25 and go to
- 43:15Speaker 1: a top-tier bowl. Yeah, and next year being in the
- 43:19Speaker 1: top 25 could get you in the playoff, as long
- 43:21Speaker 1: as you're not number 25. So that'll be a big
- 43:25Speaker 1: gain and a big difference for those teams. Clemson at
- 43:28Speaker 1: $ 25 million jumped out to me a little bit. I mean,
- 43:33Speaker 1: Mississippi State, you want to talk about how it's hard
- 43:37Speaker 1: to compete and contend? $ 21 million is a lot of
- 43:41Speaker 1: money on a football roster.
- 43:43Speaker 5: But when you look around the SEC and you consider
- 43:47Speaker 5: Auburn spending $ 6 million more on their players, Vanderbilt spending
- 43:51Speaker 5: $ 3 million more, and you've got to contend with it's
- 43:54Speaker 5: Mississippi State, which is not the top hot spot for
- 43:58Speaker 5: players to go in the SEC, makes things very, very difficult.
- 44:02Speaker 2: And Colorado's spending at a good clip.
- 44:04Speaker 5: For what Colorado is right now, I feel like that's
- 44:07Speaker 5: still a bit of the shine of Deion Sanders that's
- 44:10Speaker 5: getting them that $ 21.
- 44:11Speaker 2: 5 million. I mean, South.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Carolina surprised me being this low with all the players
- 44:16Speaker 1: who came back. If they hit the portal, they're getting
- 44:22Speaker 1: paid more than what they ended up getting just based
- 44:24Speaker 1: on the number here.
- 44:26Speaker 2: I agree.
- 44:28Speaker 5: Louisville's another one that if they took a little bit
- 44:31Speaker 5: of their basketball spending.
- 44:32Speaker 2: where.
- 44:33Speaker 5: They're maybe the top spender or one of the top
- 44:34Speaker 5: spenders in the sport of college basketball. And understand, Kentucky,
- 44:37Speaker 5: a basketball state, Louisville, a basketball school first and foremost.
- 44:41Speaker 5: But if they could just give them a little bit
- 44:43Speaker 5: of that money to football, how much better they could
- 44:47Speaker 5: be in the ACC if they're spending more than that.
- 44:49Speaker 5: I mean, could Louisville theoretically spend $ 30 million on their roster?
- 44:53Speaker 2: I think so. with some of the money in that program.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Let's show it again. That's one to watch.
- 44:57Speaker 1: I want to just look at North Carolina. They went
- 44:59Speaker 1: all in with Bill Belichick, but they're not all in
- 45:02Speaker 1: with the money compared to other ACC schools ahead of them.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Just looking at the conference comparison, Virginia ahead of them, Louisville,
- 45:12Speaker 1: Virginia Tech. There are others. For the money, they're spending
- 45:18Speaker 1: $ 10 million more on their entire roster compared to their
- 45:20Speaker 1: head coach. You know, like that's that's the surprising part.
- 45:24Speaker 1: They went all in with their head coach who when
- 45:26Speaker 1: they came in, there's going to be the NFL team
- 45:28Speaker 1: of it's going to be the 33rd NFL team or
- 45:30Speaker 1: whatever they said. Well, to me, that means more than
- 45:33Speaker 1: being outside of the top, the top 25 spending that
- 45:37Speaker 1: that much money compared to compared to that of the
- 45:41Speaker 1: top five on this list who are not in the
- 45:43Speaker 1: top 25.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Well, and they went all in on Michael Lombardi, who
- 45:46Speaker 2: is no longer there.
- 45:47Speaker 5: They went in on not just Bill Belichick as a coach,
- 45:50Speaker 5: but his staff got paid a ton and his support
- 45:53Speaker 5: people and everything else. That's where they invested the money
- 45:56Speaker 5: where I'll continue to ask the question, what's the smartest
- 45:59Speaker 5: route in today's college football to invest that much money
- 46:03Speaker 5: in the coach and the staff or to take a
- 46:05Speaker 5: little bit of that money from the coach and the
- 46:06Speaker 5: staff and reinvest it back in your roster? I think
- 46:09Speaker 5: it all depends on the coach and who he has
- 46:12Speaker 5: coordinating for.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Him to answer that question. Chad, what are we looking
- 46:16Speaker 2: at next?
- 46:17Speaker 1: We are going to look at overachievers based on FPI,
- 46:21Speaker 1: Football Power Index, of rosters in the SEC from 2021
- 46:26Speaker 1: until now. There is a volunteer state theme to this.
- 46:31Speaker 5: The two biggest overachievers from 2021 to 2025 based on
- 46:36Speaker 5: roster and the value of the roster and the players,
- 46:39Speaker 5: recruiting rankings, everything else. Tennessee and Vandy are both in
- 46:43Speaker 5: the plus column of overachieving rosters.
- 46:46Speaker 2: Over those years.
- 46:48Speaker 5: I think about Tennessee, 2021, they definitely overachieved inheriting a
- 46:52Speaker 5: team under NCAA sanctions.
- 46:53Speaker 2: 2022, absolutely overachieved.
- 46:55Speaker 5: Based on what they were expected to be that year. 2023,
- 47:00Speaker 5: about where people thought. 2024, about where they thought, maybe
- 47:03Speaker 5: a little bit better. 2025, around with the expectation. And
- 47:08Speaker 5: now 2026, they are exceeding expectation right now at six
- 47:11Speaker 5: and one. So that's a really good, this is a
- 47:14Speaker 5: good graphic for both Josh Heupel and Clark Lee. Now,
- 47:19Speaker 5: overachieving at Vandy in that 10-2 season, especially, there's various
- 47:25Speaker 5: levels to this because Vandy hasn't had a ton of
- 47:27Speaker 5: success other than the two seasons with Diego, the last
- 47:31Speaker 5: two years. But they still could not have a lot
- 47:35Speaker 5: of success and technically be overachieving. based on the talent
- 47:38Speaker 5: on the roster, right? So that's something to keep in
- 47:40Speaker 5: mind with this. Ole Miss, obviously doing a good job. Georgia,
- 47:43Speaker 5: even with all their talent, still overachieving.
- 47:46Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely. Look at the difference between Georgia and Alabama
- 47:48Speaker 2: on this list.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Well, then look at the difference between Tennessee and Florida
- 47:53Speaker 1: on the list and the players in the state of
- 47:55Speaker 1: Florida that the Gators still get in recruiting and the
- 47:59Speaker 1: lack of wins that have followed with that program.
- 48:02Speaker 2: A & M is a no-brainer. I thought A &
- 48:04Speaker 2: M would be lower.
- 48:05Speaker 5: Yeah, and I mean, LSU, the Brian Kelly years drugged
- 48:09Speaker 5: them down, obviously, with those numbers were their way down
- 48:12Speaker 5: the list.
- 48:12Speaker 2: But found that interesting. State of Tennessee should be very proud.
- 48:16Speaker 5: A couple of overachievers in Tennessee and Vandy based on
- 48:20Speaker 5: metrics of talent on those two rosters and what they've
- 48:23Speaker 5: done each season.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Coming up, one big thing on every NFL game to
- 48:28Speaker 1: get you ready for week seven, already week seven for
- 48:31Speaker 1: the National Football League.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Straight ahead.
