- Lucas: Luna, welcome back! I hope you're ready for more numbers today. Luna: Oh, I'm ready! Last time we did numbers up to twenty, right? I loved that. Lucas: Exactly! We went up to ishirini, which is twenty. Now let's go higher: twenty-one to thirty. Luna: Nice! So how do you say twenty-one in Swahili? I'm guessing it's something like 'ishirini na...' something? Lucas: You're on the right track! Twenty-one is ishirini na moja. Ishirini is twenty, na means and, moja is one. So ishirini na moja. Luna: Ishirini na moja. That sounds like 'twenty and one.' I like that logic. Lucas: Exactly! And twenty-two is ishirini na mbili. Luna: Ishirini na mbili. Lucas: Yes! And twenty-three? You try. Luna: Uhh... ishirini na tatu? Lucas: Perfect! Ishirini na tatu. You're a natural. Luna: Aww, thanks! So twenty-four would be ishirini na nne, and twenty-five ishirini na tano, right? Lucas: Yes, yes! Ishirini na nne and ishirini na tano. Great job. Luna: This is so easy! So then thirty is... thelathini? Lucas: Exactly! Thelathini. And from thirty-one onward, same pattern: thelathini na moja, thelathini na mbili, and so on. Luna: Okay, let me practice those six. Ishirini na moja, ishirini na mbili, ishirini na tatu, ishirini na nne, ishirini na tano, thelathini. Lucas: You've got it! Let's use them in a little scene. Imagine you're at the market and you want to buy twenty-five oranges. Luna: Okay, so I'd say: Nataka machungwa ishirini na tano. Lucas: Perfect! Or if someone asks how old you are, you could say Nina miaka ishirini na tatu, for twenty-three years old. Luna: Nina miaka ishirini na tatu. I'm twenty-three. That's handy! Lucas: Exactly. Now let's do a quick back and forth. I'll say a number in English, you say it in Swahili. Ready? Luna: Ready! Lucas: Twenty-one. Luna: Ishirini na moja. Lucas: Twenty-four. Luna: Ishirini na nne. Lucas: Thirty. Luna: Thelathini. Lucas: Excellent! You're doing great. Luna: Thanks! This is fun. Can we try a little dialogue? Lucas: Sure! I'll be the seller, you're the buyer. Say you want to buy twenty-two bananas. Luna: Hodi! Nataka ndizi ishirini na mbili. Lucas: Sawa! Hizi ndizi ishirini na mbili. Bei gani? That would be... well, I'll just say 'Asante!' But you could ask the price. Luna: Right! Bei gani? Asante! Lucas: See, you're already using it in context. Let's go over them one more time together. Luna: Sure, let's do it. Lucas: Ishirini na moja. Luna: Ishirini na moja. Lucas: Ishirini na mbili. Luna: Ishirini na mbili. Lucas: Ishirini na tatu. Luna: Ishirini na tatu. Lucas: Ishirini na nne. Luna: Ishirini na nne. Ishirini na moja... well, maybe not that many! Lucas: That's a lot of caffeine! Anyway, that's all for today. Thanks for joining us on Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Luna: Yes, thanks for listening!
