- 1:45They did that for a while. He was also currently serving as the state
- 1:49Revenue Secretary and now he wants to be the circuit judge in Canaw County.
- 1:53Dave Hardy, well, we'll join us talk about that. Coming up a
- 1:57little bit later on. There was an announcement made actually on this show yesterday
- 2:01by Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin. That's what pertains to some jobs coming to downtown
- 2:07Charleston and it was made official at the Charleston City Council meeting last night.
- 2:10We're going to get into that story coming up a little bit later on.
- 2:13Plus we'll go national for a little bit. There are some very very troubling
- 2:16poll numbers out for President Biden in a matchup against former President Donald Trump,
- 2:23and I'm going to get into that coming up a little bit later on.
- 2:25Lots to get to your calls and texts are always welcome, Bigley Pickley Wiggily
- 2:30hotline three zero four three four five fifty fifty eight. I have a text
- 2:32line for through three zero four nine three five five zero zero eight. Want
- 2:36to welcome in though. To start things off, our good friend Chris Withrow
- 2:38from the Benny Keatam Shrine. Good morning, sir, how are you?
- 2:43I am excellent day. Thank you so much. Sorry it can't be in
- 2:46the studio today, but I am happy to be here. You know what,
- 2:51do you know what, Chris, Incarceration happens to the best of us.
- 2:53I'm just glad that you were able to get that one phone call out
- 2:55this morning. So I spent my last quarter for this. This show's not
- 3:00even worth a quarter man. I'm gonna tell you that right now, all
- 3:04right, before we talk about some things coming up, and I'd like to
- 3:06give you guys and folks with the Shrine an opportunity to talk about the great
- 3:09things you do in the community before I get into things coming up. I
- 3:13want to go back a couple of weeks and you had your big truck or
- 3:15treat event. I think it was on a Friday at the temple there on
- 3:21Courier Street. Tell us how that went. Well, I'll tell you it
- 3:23was an exciting evening. There were so many children there, all dressed up
- 3:30and they had an absolute ball. We just really enjoyed giving back to the
- 3:35community, getting our face out there and shaking hands and meeting the people.
- 3:40But I'm going to throw out a really good thank you to our vendors.
- 3:46We had thirty eight individual trunks or vendors out there. People are in the
- 3:53community, you know, some of the people banks and the police department,
- 4:00Big shout out to them, Charleston, Kenall County, the ambulance, fired
- 4:09departments, they were all there. It was a wonderful event. We had
- 4:13all probably one hundred and fifty kids and parents alike and just had an absolute
- 4:18blast. It was fun. Yeah, it was. I saw a lot
- 4:20of pictures posted online and if I remember correctly, you know, for old
- 4:25people like you and I, that's kind of hard to remember two weeks ago
- 4:27or a week and a half ago. But I think the I think the
- 4:30weather was was pretty good. I think it was perfect. We had I
- 4:34mean temperature, no rain, it just everything just kind of all the stars
- 4:41aligned, I guess, and it was just a really nice evening and it
- 4:44looked like everybody was having a good time. And it was a great event
- 4:46and we hope to continue to do that every year. We had such a
- 4:49great response with that. And then of course Saturday we had two events back
- 4:55to back. We had the Broomstick Ball, which was you know, I
- 5:00dress up adult party. It was great, had a really good DJ,
- 5:03great food that was provided by Anthony Wilkins with time after time, and we've
- 5:11just had a great time. It was a lot of fun. So what's
- 5:13the future looking like? I know you guys and guys have always got something
- 5:15big coming up? What's next on the on the on the shrine radar well
- 5:21started yesterday. Big events going to be for two weeks Monday through Friday.
- 5:29We are going to be a drop off collection point for the Union Mission.
- 5:32We teamed up with them to join their food drive and we're really excited about
- 5:38it. So every day, twice a day, from eleven to two during
- 5:43the day and from four to seven every evening Monday through Friday this week and
- 5:48Monday through Friday next week. We're going to be a drop off point.
- 5:51Like I said, but it's going to be a drive through drop off point.
- 5:56You come into the lot, you open up your car, pop your
- 5:59trunk, We'll pull the non perishable foods out or cash donations, whichever you'd
- 6:02like to do. We're going to collect that and at the end of next
- 6:06week we're going to deliver all that stuff to the Union Mission to help feed
- 6:12the families during the holidays. We're really excited about it. Want everybody to
- 6:15come by one hundred Coarier Street, get twenty thirty cans of food boxes.
- 6:20You know, go through your pantries, you know, pull out the food,
- 6:24give a little bit during this holiday season. But all you have to
- 6:27do is drive through. You don't even have to get out of your car.
- 6:29We're going to take care of it for you. So we're really excited
- 6:31about that. Partnership with the Union Mission. What particular types of food,
- 6:35Chris, are you looking for? I mean, is there any restrictions?
- 6:40What ideally would you like to have the can foods things of that nature,
- 6:43canned foods, box foods, any non perishables, stuff that could be stored
- 6:46on your shelf when you open up your pantry in the house before you go
- 6:50to work one day this week, grab via two or three Kroger bags full
- 6:54of canned food, box foods and bring it by the Shrine Temple under Courrier
- 7:00Street this week and next and we'll take it off your hands. But anything
- 7:03that's shelf stable, okay, okay. And so you're doing it twice daily,
- 7:11eleven to two and four to seven, right correct, Monday through Friday
- 7:15this week and Monday through Friday next week, all right, And it's an
- 7:17easy opportunity for people to go. And you'll take cash donations as well.
- 7:21What about holiday parties there at the Shrine Hall. I know you guys are
- 7:25always having some kind of an event there. Is it If I want to
- 7:28book a Christmas party or something like that, they're a little gathering for the
- 7:31Christmas season. Is it too late to do that? It's not too late,
- 7:35but I will warn you you need to do it quick. We're booking
- 7:39up very fast. You know, we've become a very popular venue. We've
- 7:42got a great opportunity there right downtown, great parking, great event space.
- 7:46So yes, we are booking parties and events every day, So come and
- 7:55check us out and book your next Christmas party. Speak a Christmas party,
- 8:00though, you know we've got we've got a really good thing. You know.
- 8:05Every year we do Breakfast with Sanna and it's going to be a great
- 8:09event. It's on December of the sixteenth, down down at the Shrine Center
- 8:13at one hundred quarter Street at nine am. Sanna's gonna come and we're gonna
- 8:20have a great breakfast. We've got a lot of great partners that have helped
- 8:24us. It's it's a wonderful event and it's open to the public and we
- 8:28would love for everybody to come and sat down and tell old Saint Nick what's
- 8:33on your Christmas list this year? And that's that was December the sixteenth,
- 8:37Is that right? Is that what you said, Chris, Yes, sir,
- 8:39and we'll have you on. By my calculation, we have you on
- 8:41about once a month, so we'll have you on before then we're also going
- 8:46to have you on I guess before the Christmas Parade, which is in Charleston.
- 8:48I don't want to forget to mention that how does a shrine club get
- 8:52involved with that with a Christmas brade in Charleston or any other parades or any
- 8:56other things going on, because I know you you folks are out everywhere.
- 8:58What's see what's what's the game plan looking like? Man? Well, we
- 9:03try to get to every event, every parade possible, you know. And
- 9:07it's it's one way that we are able to raise funds. It's also a
- 9:11way that we can get out and give back to the community. We are
- 9:15going to be involved in multiple uh parades. We're going to do a Veterans
- 9:20parade coming up before that. But we are so excited. It's really fun
- 9:26to go up and down the street, show everybody that the shrine is alive
- 9:31and doing well, and it to watch the kids on the on the side
- 9:35of the road and they're smiling and happy, and mom's dads, grandma and
- 9:39grandpa's, ant's uncles, everybody out there and just watching the kids enjoying the
- 9:45day. It's it's very very rewarding. Tell me about this veterans event because
- 9:50Veterans Day's coming up this week. When when is it? When and where
- 9:52is this going to happen? Well, there's several Veterans Days parades around Oh
- 9:58Okay, okay, so one that that we'll be into, So okay,
- 10:03and I you know, I would love to really tell all of your listeners
- 10:09come out and support these Veterans Day parades. Uh. These men and women
- 10:15sacrificed a lot and to recognize them is a great thing. So everybody get
- 10:20out and grab your kids and your neighbors and go out and go to one
- 10:24of these veterans parades. A wonderful way to say thank you. Well,
- 10:28let's recap again. You're doing your food drop off this weekend next at the
- 10:33uh at At at the Shrine Temple, which is right next door to the
- 10:37Kylosema Convention Center, eleven to two and then four to seven. It's a
- 10:39drive through. So look, if you can't afford to give a whole lot
- 10:43proceeds, we'll go to Union Mission. You can give a couple of cans
- 10:46a day. You can do a small cash donation, don't even have to
- 10:48get out of your car. All you got to do is just pull up
- 10:52and the folks will come out and get the things again eleven to two and
- 10:54four to seven h And also, and we'll be talking about this h next
- 10:58month a little bit more. You got your breakfast with Santa, which is
- 11:01going to be December the sixteenth at nine am. We'll get into that a
- 11:03little bit later on and I'll follow up and we'll close it here by Chris
- 11:07by saying, hats off to you folks for everything that you do, not
- 11:11only during the holiday season but also year round. I appreciate it. Man.
- 11:15Thank you so much, Dave, and you have a wonderful day,
- 11:16all right. Chris withbrow again for the Benny Keatam Shrine. Again, their
- 11:20food drop off is happening this weekend next eleven to two at the temple which
- 11:24is just beside the kytle' Semconnvention Center. Eleven to two and then they take
- 11:28a little break and then they can do four to seven. And they are
- 11:31accepting cash donations, so you don't even have to get out of your car.
- 11:33You just pull up and they'll come out and they'll unload it for you.
- 11:37And he also mentioned about how the shrines shiners are going to try to
- 11:39be in all the Veterans break. I want to get this event out there
- 11:43before I forget because somebody sent this to me. And by the way,
- 11:46Veterans Day will be observed in many areas, it will be observed on Friday,
- 11:50but the actual holiday is this Saturday. There's going to be a Veterans
- 11:52Appreciation dinner happening this Saturday in Putnam County over in Hurricane, and it's at
- 11:58the Commons area of Hurricane High School. And it's a full barbecue meal with
- 12:03sides and the whole thing. And it is sponsored by Toasted by rather Putnam
- 12:09County Bank, by Eleanor Barbecue, one of my favorite places in the world,
- 12:11and also by the City of Hurricane. So if you're a veteran,
- 12:16you and a guest can come there for that. Again. It's this Saturday
- 12:20from four to seven. You and one guest you eat absolutely free some of
- 12:22the most delicious barbecue you'll find anywhere, courtesy of Eleanor Barbecue. And I'll
- 12:26be talking about that a little bit more a little bit later on, but
- 12:30I did want to kind of get that in as we head toward the Veterans
- 12:33Observance. This weekend. Our texting services here for the show are sponsored by

- 15:58here in this company because we have so many Daves. You got myself,
- 16:02you got Dave Wilson up in Morgantown, you get Dave Weekly, you get
- 16:04Dave jacklind So what's another day, another day. That's a good crew right
- 16:08there. And the temperature in this studio this morning. Here's the thing about
- 16:12it, Dave, when you come in here, it's either going to be
- 16:14twenty seven or one hundred and twenty seven. Well, and today it's one
- 16:15hundred and twenty seven. I don't know why I'm on the hot seat.
- 16:18You're literally on the hot seat. And so now so you you're a state
- 16:25revenue secretary. That's kept you busy for the last almost seven years, almost
- 16:29seven years of number crunching. Any truth to the rumor that you're just tired
- 16:33of looking at numbers and you want to look at something else. I love
- 16:36numbers. I love numbers since I was in the first grade. But I'm
- 16:38coming up on seven years. I started January of twenty seventeen. I came
- 16:42in with the governor and when Jeff Sandy left in July, I looked around
- 16:48and I thought, wow, I'm the last remaining original cabinet member for Governor
- 16:52Justice. So I've lasted seven years and it's been wonderful. I love working
- 16:56with the Governor's He's easy to work with and we've been blessed with some really
- 17:00good success up there. Before we talk about your potential judgeship, I want
- 17:04to talk about Dave Hardy, the man. Now, for those who may
- 17:07not know, you've been in public service for quite some time. Variety of
- 17:10different things. We'll get into that a little bit later on. But give
- 17:11us your background, give us the basic bio in Dave Harty Okay, number
- 17:15one. I hail from the same hometown as Jeff Jenkins, Pratt, West
- 17:18Virginia, calculation four hundred and ninety. I was gonna say it's that downtown
- 17:22Pratt or one of the suburbs I lived. Jeff kind of lives in the
- 17:26suburbs, but I live right in downtown by Pratt Elementary, where Jeff and
- 17:30I both went to school. Matter of fact, Jeff took my paper out.
- 17:34When I got older and was ready to give up my paper out,
- 17:37Jeff and his brother Kevin took my pokrout. We laugh about that all the
- 17:40time. The things you learned I didn't know. Oh yeah. We were
- 17:42proud of our hometown. And it's wonderful little place. And I'm up there
- 17:45every weekend because my mother, who's ninety years old, is still living there
- 17:49and has lived there since nineteen thirty three, really in the same house,
- 17:52same house. Well, no, actually since nineteen fifty seven. That's still
- 17:56pretty remarkable. She was pregnant with me when she moved in that. Okay,
- 18:00But anyway, I'm a graduate of Eastbank High School, West Virginia Tech
- 18:03BS and Accounting BA and History and Government, University of Tennessee College of Law,
- 18:08Knoxville. And I came back here in the summer of eighty three and
- 18:12took the bar. Back then, if you went to WVU Law School,
- 18:15you didn't have to take the bar, but I had gone out of state,
- 18:17so I took the bar. And I started practicing law forty years ago
- 18:22last month, October sixteenth of eighty three. And I have been in and
- 18:26around Charleston a member of the bar for the last forty years. I started
- 18:30in public office May first, ninety five. I was elected Charleston City Council.
- 18:34I served six years under Mayor Meltain and Mayor Goldman. I was lucky
- 18:38enough to chair the Finance Committee under both those mayors. And then I was
- 18:42appointed the County Commission. When Duke Bloom was elected judge in one, I
- 18:48was appointed to the Commission, and then I was re elected to the Commission
- 18:51four times and was there sixteen years. So it's been wonderful experience all the
- 18:56way across the board. So after all those things, Dave, then,
- 19:00as you said, you have been serving as the State Revenue secretary. All
- 19:03those things, why now roll on the bench. I think being on the
- 19:07bench requires a lot of wisdom and a lot of insight. And you know,
- 19:12no one wants to get old, Dave, and I certainly don't.
- 19:15But one advantage of being a little bit older, a little bit longer in
- 19:18the tooth is you have better insight and better wisdom. And I started thinking
- 19:23in twenty three and when we started this year, where could I take my
- 19:27public service because I no longer practice law full time. I haven't since I
- 19:32went to the Capitol in seventeen. And I started reflecting upon it, and
- 19:36I thought, you know, I really need to think about the judicial side
- 19:38of things. I all of my time hasn't been in the executive side,
- 19:42the legislative side, and it just seemed like a really good fit right now
- 19:47for me, and a good fit because I think I can bring a lot
- 19:51to the bench now from your time, as you said, County Commission,
- 19:56City Council, your time is the State Revenue st Secretary. What are some
- 20:00of the things that you learned in those roles that if elected to the bench,
- 20:04you feel that will serve you well and serve the people well. Okay,
- 20:07first and foremost you have to understand this is even though we are in
- 20:11West Virginia and people say West Virginia is not diverse, this is a very
- 20:15diverse county from one end to the other, from South Hills to Saint Albans
- 20:19to Clendenen to Montgomery. It's a very diverse place. And I feel like
- 20:26I have a very strong understanding of the diversity our people, the way our
- 20:32people here think, the way we respect law enforcement here, and the way
- 20:37we care about our seniors and our children as well. And one of the
- 20:40most important things that happens in these circuit courts every day is not the multimillion
- 20:44dollar lawsuits. They happen and people get hurt and they need to be compensated,
- 20:48but they deal constantly with domestic issues, and I think that I could
- 20:53bring a lot of insight into that, and I think I understand our culture
- 20:59and what causes a lot of these problems, and particularly it's been said a
- 21:02million times, a lot of it revolves around not having strong family units,
- 21:07and of course our old problem addiction, right, yeah, and it's it
- 21:11is certainly a scourge on the nation. But I don't think any state in
- 21:15the Union has been hit harder than what West Virginia have. What's the biggest
- 21:18challenges facing the courts right now in your opinion what I just brought up trying
- 21:23to resolve complicated social issues through the judicial system, And you know, our
- 21:29school systems have the very same problem when you look or challenge should probably be
- 21:33the better word, when you look at what are school you expect out of
- 21:37our schools today and what we expect even out of our preschools. Children that
- 21:41are coming to school, that are not being properly cared for, that are
- 21:45hungry, that are being possibly mistreated at home, and that child is an
- 21:49innocent victim of that, and then eighteen years later or fifteen years later,
- 21:55that child is sitting in front of a courts room somewhere charged with some sort
- 21:59of crimes. So it's a very very big societal problem. Every time a
- 22:03child goes the wrong direction, it's a failure, and I hope the courts
- 22:08play a role in that. But I hope even at the lower levels,
- 22:12from preschool forward, we can continue to attack that. You know, when
- 22:17you look at the economic numbers for West Virginia, and I've done that now
- 22:21in the last seven years, we talked to the Wall Street Banks literally set
- 22:25Standard and Poors, Moody's and Fitch. They always talk about our workforce,
- 22:29West Virginia's workforce and the fact that we don't have enough young people and our
- 22:33birth rate is lower than our death rate. That's not good now. So
- 22:38we have to figure out from the bottom up how to continue to bring have
- 22:45young people come to our state, be born or come here, and then
- 22:48how to nurture them and make them productive adults. I want to go back
- 22:52to your role, and I have you on more as a candid anything else,
- 22:53But I'll be remiss if I didn't ask you a couple of questions about
- 22:56your current role as the state Revenue Secretary of Tell we talk about that experience,
- 23:00what that's been like. You said that you enjoyed working with the ovenor
- 23:02yes, exhilarating when you know when we got there in January seventeen, it
- 23:06seems like one hundred years ago. When I think of all the things that
- 23:08have happened since January seventeen, I mean, who would have ever been a
- 23:11million years thought we'd have this pandemic. I always tell the story. You
- 23:17know, we started off, we were in a deficit position. The governor
- 23:21attacked a deficit with everything he had his first six months in office, and
- 23:25by June thirty seventeen, we were out of a deficit position and we were
- 23:29into a positive position. We rolled into eighteen. Our numbers kept getting better,
- 23:33our severiance, tax revenue started to improve. The governor started to hit
- 23:37his stride with the leadership with the legislature, and then all at once along
- 23:42comes this pandemic. And I still tell the story that the federal government just
- 23:48basically, why are transferred us about six hundred and thirty million dollars one day?
- 23:56It was March twenty fifth, twenty twenty, and didn't even tell us
- 23:59the rules on how to spend it. They just said, here's six hundred
- 24:03and twenty million dollars and we'll let you know the rules later. So that
- 24:06was the challenge that we had with the pandemic, and the governor had to
- 24:10lead us through that, the pandemic and all the businesses being closed, and
- 24:14how to comply with the federal guidelines on federal money. And then we had
- 24:18to dig ourselves out of the pandemic. And it's been it's been literally a
- 24:22roller coaster financially. And then at the same time, we did the Roads
- 24:29for Prosperity bond program, which was pre pandemic, where we went out to
- 24:33Wall Street and got one point six billion dollars worth of low interest bonds to
- 24:38improve andre basically catch up all the problems with our highways. And we never
- 24:44stopped working on that. And I'll tell you what Wall Street thinks of West
- 24:47Virginia. We sold eight hundred million dollars worth of bonds one day in eight
- 24:52seconds. That's eight seconds, we sold eight hundred million dollars worth of bonds.
- 24:57And that means that Law Street likes West Virginia. They like our double
- 25:03A stable credit rating. They like the fact that we've done a wonderful job
- 25:07keeping our baseline budget down and keeping it flat and under control, and that
- 25:11we've taken and wisely used our surpluses to do very important monumental things so that
- 25:18we tomorrow, literally tomorrow, we will be doing our ratings calls with Fitch,
- 25:25Standard and Poors and Moodies. And I'm looking forward to presenting West Virginia's
- 25:29story one more time to Law Street. Here we're talking with Dave Hardy,
- 25:32who is the state Revenue secretary now a candidate for Circuit judge here in Kanawha
- 25:36County. All right, Dave, let's get back to the judges racist for
- 25:37a moment. Now, I help the listeners understand the way the whole thing
- 25:41works, because whoever is elected to this position, the election is in May.
- 25:45Yes, it's this is very complicated. Due to the tragic and unfortunate
- 25:51and sad death of Judge Tabot. The position that I'm running for is now
- 25:56vacant. So there's two there's two things going on here. I have file
- 26:00pre candidacy papers to run for that position, and that election will be held
- 26:07on May fourteenth. And the way the judge races are, there's no Republican
- 26:11or Democrat. It's a nonpartisan race. So you're elected in May of twenty
- 26:15twenty four for an eight year term commencing January first, twenty five. Now,
- 26:19what happens between now and January first, twenty five? Their Judicial Vacancy
- 26:25Commission is going to be receiving applications for appointment to Judge Tabots seat. And
- 26:32we'll be holding interviews for appointment to Judge Tabot seat on December sixth, and
- 26:37then the Governor will be given three names from the vacancy commission and he will
- 26:41be able to pick from those three names, and that person will hold the
- 26:47seat from probably the middle of December throughout and then throughout the whole year of
- 26:52calendary year twenty twenty till a new person, whoever that is, would take
- 26:55it. So what you're asking for, Dave, is you're asking to be
- 26:57appointed. You're one of the names to be appoint into to judge the late
- 27:00judge Tabit's position. But then you're also going to be running as a camp
- 27:03exactly. Dave, you're a quick study. You got that one quick.
- 27:07Yeah. It's about a twelve and a half month appointment for twenty twenty four,
- 27:11essentially counter youear twenty four, and then you are running for eight year
- 27:17term starting January first, twenty five. So if things go right, I
- 27:21hope the governor will consider me for the appointment. I tend to submit an
- 27:23application, and if he does choose me, I'm really looking forward to getting
- 27:29jumping in with both feet. I mean, you've been right there with him,
- 27:32you would think, but you never know. I never know, and
- 27:34I haven't asked h I have not asked the governor if he would pick me
- 27:37for that position. I have asked the Governor's office for permission and form the
- 27:41Governor's office that I would like to apply for the position. It'll be chosen
- 27:45in December. Is that what you said? The interviews are Wednesday, December
- 27:48sixth, and generally the names are given to the governor within a day or
- 27:52two, so it would be mid December. Okay, all right, So
- 27:56what's the campaign going to look like? Because regardless of whether you get the
- 28:00appointment, you're still going to run. Even if you don't get it,
- 28:03you're not chosen by the governor, you are still going to run. So
- 28:06what's the campaign on the campaign's going to look like? Be very positive.
- 28:10I don't do negative campaigning. I've won six elections in this county, two
- 28:15for city council, four for county. I never did any negative campaigning.
- 28:18To me, campaigning is like a job interview. I want to present myself
- 28:22as a seasoned attorney who had a successful private law practice for thirty three years,
- 28:27who has now reached a point in his career where I think I can
- 28:32impart some of that wisdom and knowledge from having practiced law thirty three years and
- 28:36lived in this community for literally my whole life and that's essentially my campaign.
- 28:42And then of course I will campaign on the fact that I have done I
- 28:47think a very good job as a public servant, and I have been in
- 28:49some sort of public capacity since May one of nineteen ninety five when I joined
- 28:53Charleston City Council. And the race is for any sort of a judicial position,
- 29:00Dave are a little bit different as far as the rules and what your
- 29:04campaigning style and so on and so forth. It lends itself to a different
- 29:07type of campaign. It very much does. I'm glad you brought that up.
- 29:11There's a special canon of rules that apply to judicial candidates and you have
- 29:17to follow those rules carefully. And the State Bar takes that so seriously that
- 29:21they're holding a webinar on November sixteenth, a three hour webinar just for judicial
- 29:26candidates. So give us an example of some of the things. For example,
- 29:30a judicial candidate should cannot directly ask for a contribution, so other parties
- 29:37can ask for that candidate, right, But I cannot walk in a law
- 29:40firm and say I would like for you to contribute to my campaign. That's
- 29:44considered to be a no known and for good reason. So that's totally different.
- 29:48Than when you're run to something else. Well, basically you never stop
- 29:51asking me. It's quite demeaning at times when you do it. And then
- 29:55of course you have to be very careful about your statements, disparaging remarks,
- 30:00negative things that you say. And again I'm reading these roles and learning them
- 30:03as I go. But this is new for me too, and I'm looking
- 30:06forward to it. I think. The other thing, of course, is
- 30:07there's no as I said earlier, there's no Republican or Democrat. It's just
- 30:11a one, one shot election on May fourteenth. But I mean, people
- 30:15can do their homework and they can look into your past and you're you or
- 30:19any of the other candidates to kind of see what it is you stand for
- 30:22and your your party registration is is public knowledge, you know, through of
- 30:26the Secretary of State's office, so they can they can go look it up.
- 30:29But they they want to take that opportunity. So we'll have you on
- 30:33or any in the other candidates several times between now and the campaign, and
- 30:37we wish you the best of luck with everything you were telling me off the
- 30:40air. It you're in the process of getting websites and all that stuff set
- 30:42up so that people can learn more about you. Then, Yes, we're
- 30:45just now starting to get put the campaign together and come ready. I filed
- 30:49the pre candidacy papers on November first. Okay, well, Dave, I
- 30:53appreciate you taking time on your schedule to be here. Now go crunch some
- 30:56more numbers, because you got that, You've got, you got some.
- 30:59You got, as you said, a series of phone calls you got to
- 31:02take care of tomorrow and tomorrow I will be presenting West Virginia's financial picture in
- 31:06front of the Wall Street rating agencies via zoom, not in person. I'm
- 31:08looking forward to it. And here's something. Let me just say this before
- 31:11we let you go. This is not a political state, but it is
- 31:15a statement of fact. If you go back and you look where West Virginia
- 31:18was twenty years ago, and everybody's got their hands raised, this was me,
- 31:22This was me, This was this position that did whatever. I don't
- 31:25care who did it. West Virginia is in a heck of a lot better
- 31:26place than what it was, say, twenty years ago. I wish every
- 31:30person in West Virginia could hear the feedback we get when we present West Virginia's
- 31:34financial picture. We funded our pensions we funded our OPAB liability, we have
- 31:38a balanced budget, and we have a one billion dollar plus rainy day fund.
- 31:44All other states are very envious, believe me. And again, a
- 31:48lot of this was you reached a lot of those goals prior to getting this
- 31:52the money from the federal government from the pandemic money, he was already there.
- 31:56We've been funding our pension program since ninety four. That was that's a
- 32:00forty year plan. We're on year thirty two and we are very close to
- 32:07reaching the promised land. Well, we will be one of the few states
- 32:09in America that has fully funded all of its pension obligations, which means West
- 32:15Virginia's financial foundation is extremely strong. Indeed, all right, David, we
- 32:19wish you the best of luck. Hang out with me here. One second's
- 32:21Dave Hardy again, State Revenue Secretary, now candidate for Kenais County Circuit Judge

- 36:47Do we really want to be electing liberals in disguise to our judiciary?
- 36:52Well, if Dave Hardy switched from a Democrat to Independent or to Republican or
- 36:57whatever, he's certainly and the only one that did it in the state of
- 37:00West Virginia, because a lot of people have switched and continue to move away
- 37:05from the Democratic Party. We talked about talk to mister Pushkin about that tomorrow,
- 37:09as was announced by Mayor Goodwin on the show yesterday and announced again at
- 37:15City council last night, and Jared Lewis as a story posted about a wv
- 37:17Metronews dot Com, a worldwide company with operations in Elkview currently is moving to
- 37:22downtown Charleston. Now. The company's name is Worley and they have over ten
- 37:27thousand employees in forty six countries. Now over two hundred of those are expected
- 37:32by the time it's all said and done to be in downtown Charleston. They're
- 37:36going to be moving into Laidley Tower with one hundred and seventy positions there for
- 37:40sure, and at least at this point it's still early on, at least
- 37:45fifty or so new jobs coming to downtown Charleston. Now, again, this
- 37:51was a company that was in Elkview, and so they're moving from what I
- 37:54understand, and again Jared Lewis has got an end depth story about it on
- 37:58the website. They're going to actually be moving those employees from elk You to
- 38:01downtown Charleston into Laidley Laidley Tower that is. And so there's expected to be
- 38:07and the mayor talked about it on the show yesterday. There's expected to be
- 38:10more jobs from out of state coming. So it's not just the Elkview positions
- 38:15I understand, there's gonna be others coming in as well. City council last
- 38:20night approved a resolution for up to one hundred and twenty parking spaces that the
- 38:24city will give for free as long as the company worthy operates in good faith
- 38:34and by adding new employees in that spot at Laidley Tower for at least seven
- 38:40years. So that's kind of the deal. And again the mayor talked about
- 38:45it on the show yesterday. That's kind of the deal. By the way,
- 38:47if you missed the show, you missed the mayor's comments, you can
- 38:50go back and listen to it on my social media and also on WCT justnutword
- 38:54dot com. So what exactly does this company do well? They provide consulting
- 38:59services to energy sectors and complex process industries. And if it sounds like that
- 39:05was taken directly off their website, well it was. Now Now most of
- 39:08the people coming to Charleston work in the field of engineering services, and the
- 39:15free parking that they are getting will be in Municipal Parking Building Number two.
- 39:20A mayor good ones set at council last night that Worley is an international company
- 39:24that first chose West Virginia and now chose Charleston, specifically downtown Charleston. Not
- 39:32such good news for the Lview area, which is going to be losing those
- 39:36jobs. But speaking for Charleston, it does put more bodies downtown, which
- 39:44is good for eateries and so on and so on. And there will be
- 39:46critics, and there already have been. I read it all. Got into
- 39:51a discussion about it with some folks here earlier this morning. But it's the
- 39:55kind of jobs that you want, that you want downtown. And I talked
- 40:00to the man and I don't know how much after the show yesterday, I'll
- 40:04go ahead and say this. I don't think she would mind from me saying
- 40:06this. After the show. The Mayor stuck around for a little bit yesterday,
- 40:09five minutes or so after the show, and we talked about it a
- 40:12little bit, kind of off the air and off the cuff, and about
- 40:16about some of these jobs and some of the people that are going to be
- 40:19coming to these primarily the jobs, the newer jobs, not the ones that
- 40:22are currently in positioned in you, but the other ones are going to be
- 40:27the kind of people that you want, you know, to come down down
- 40:29Charleston. And what you mean by that is you want people that they can't
- 40:32apparently, and this has been something that's been in the works for a while,
- 40:37and I'm sure. The mayor would be the first to tell you that.
- 40:38You know, she wasn't the only one. There's been other people that
- 40:40have been working on this. But they came to Charleston and they looked around
- 40:45and they said they were kind of taken in a good way by some of
- 40:49the more positive things going on in the downtown area and some of the you
- 40:54know, the breweries and the things of that nature, and they like what
- 40:58they saw. So, as we would say in Logan County, I'm for
- 41:01it. It is twelve minutes away from ten. We're brought to you apart

- 42:12hey, we'll take it. It's gonna be a good time. And as

- 46:40I'd some good on the national front I wanted to talk about, and I
- 46:43was reading this over the weekend. Although although a great number of the electorate,
- 46:50both Republican and Democrats say they don't want either President Biden or former President
- 46:55Trump to be the nominee, it looks like both will be their respective party
- 46:59noneminease Now. The New York Times is out with the story over the weekend,
- 47:06and it's been commented on and picked up by nearly nearly everyone that in
- 47:14the states that are likely to decide the presidency, that being Pennsylvania, Arizona,
- 47:20Georgia, Nevada, New York, and Michigan. Trump is leading Biden
- 47:25in five of those six, which likely would be enough to get him to
- 47:32the two seventy mark, the number of electoral votes that the former president would
- 47:37need. Now, Trump is up by in other at least four or five
- 47:45additional states that are seen as crucial to getting the nod for president. But
- 47:51again those swing states Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, New York,
- 47:54and Michigan. At least several others, he's up in those as well.
- 47:58Now West Virginia, of course, is at one of those because Trump is
- 48:01already leading by like six thousand percent or something like that. But why is
- 48:07that Take West Virginia out of the equation and focus on the states where one
- 48:15would think that Biden would have a chance, like the ones the swing states
- 48:19that I mentioned earlier. I mean, it isn't like people just suddenly fell
- 48:22in love with Donald Trump. Trump is just as unpopular, maybe more so
- 48:28than he ever was. Again not talking West Virginia. Outside West Virginia,
- 48:32the problem, as was pointed out in this piece by The New York Times
- 48:37simply put, is that taking Trump out of the equation, Joe Biden has
- 48:45lost popularity greatly. Now. The Times in this piece says that the advantages
- 48:53that Biden had over Trump last time around, mainly that he was simply more
- 49:00well liked than Trump. Those advantages have all gone away. Now these what
- 49:07I'm talking about here, This is the words of the New York Times,
- 49:10folks. This is not Dave Allen speaking. This is the New York Times.
- 49:15And why is he lost favor so much in these crucial swing states?
- 49:20Talking about President Biden, it's the perception of the handling of the economy.
- 49:28Hobby talked about this a little bit this morning in his commentary. You know,
- 49:32the economy is showing sound and signs of rebound. Inflation has actually gone
- 49:36down, but that doesn't actually mean anything when you go to the grocery store
- 49:39to buy your kids some cereal and it's still nine dollars a box. You
- 49:43know, people don't really they don't want to look at economic numbers. They
- 49:45want to look at what they're paying. And his age, his age is
- 49:51a factor. And it's not so much the number on the age. It's
- 50:00it's more about the way that President Biden, with all due respect, carries
- 50:07himself. And look, I'm a person that has respect for the office of
- 50:10the presidency no matter who the president is. You know, whether I liked
- 50:15him or didn't like him, or don't vote, didn't vote for me,
- 50:17whatever, I respect the audis I'm not that guy that says not my president.
- 50:21You'll never hear me say that. I wasn't a Barack Obama fan,
- 50:24you know, but Barack Obama was my president. Joe Biden is my president.
- 50:30Donald Trump my president. So I'm a guy that has respect for the
- 50:34office. But with all due respect, Joe Biden carries himself like a bumbling
- 50:38old man that could probably wet his pants at any given time. So in
- 50:45what groups is Biden los into most numbers? According to The Times, it's
- 50:49among blacks and Hispanics, the eighteen to twenty nine year old block, which
- 50:53has traditionally over the years back to whomever the Democrat was. Well, this
- 50:58group seems to have both Biden and Trump at about the same level. Black
- 51:02voters normally back the Democratic candidate about ninety percent of the time, it's dipped
- 51:08for Biden down to around seventy percent. Now Among Hispanics, President Biden currently
- 51:14sits at about fifty percent. That is way lower, way lower than what
- 51:20he was the last time around, and much lower than what Democrats have been
- 51:24in the past. Nearly half of registered voters, nearly half of registered voters
- 51:30and battleground states say there is almost no chance they will support Joe Biden for
- 51:37president. They say no chance in these swing states. It is. It's
- 51:45fascinating stuff, really, and the fact that it's being reported by the New
- 51:50York Times should tell you something. Trump, who was in a contentious battle
- 51:55in a New York courtroom yesterday, is gaining ground the other Republicans, and
- 52:00I think they have a debate coming up tomorrow night will be five or so
- 52:04of them on the stage. Other Republicans are losing ground. And now Biden
- 52:08is also losing ground. Interesting stuff, interesting times we live in, folks.
- 52:15Coming up on the show tomorrow, Doctor Casey Saxonbridge Valley is going to
- 52:20stop by. Add a couple of Democrats on the show tomorrow who says I'm
- 52:22not equal opportunity all right, I got Delegate Kaylee Young and State Democratic Party
